Google’s employees are called Googlers. Amazon’s workers are known as Amazonians. Yahoo’s employees were Yahoos. So it was a conundrum for employees at Facebook, long known as Facebookers, when the company renamed itself Meta late last year. The terminology is now no longer in question. At a meeting on Tuesday, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder and Meta’s CEO, announced a new name for his company’s employees: Metamates. Zuckerberg introduced the term as part of an overhaul of Meta’s corporate values, which he said needed updating because of the company’s new direction.
US accuses China of ‘serious harm’ to workers through trade
China’s economy is increasingly state-led according to the Biden administration
Protesters opposing a proposed US grant for Nepal clashed with the police outside parliament on Wednesday, leaving injuries on both sides. The proposal was scheduled to be presented in parliament for approval, but the debate was postponed because of disagreements among political parties. There has been growing opposition to the grant, mainly led by Communist parties. The money is meant to be used for the construction of power transmission lines and improvement of roads in the Himalayan nation, but the parties allege it comes with conditions that are not acceptable. Two of the Communist parties are part of the coalition government.
The US has accused China of causing “serious harm” to workers and firms around the world with its trade policies. HiIndia Newsdesk
The US Trade Representative accused Beijing of repeatedly failing to live up to trade commitments. It published its annual review of China’s compliance with the deal that gave it membership of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Wednesday. China said it is a firm supporter of and important contributor to the WTO. The US report is the first since President Biden’s appointee Katherine Tai took up office as the top US trade negotiator, and it lays out US concerns about China’s trade policies. Many of the them are long-standing in Washington and are shared by both Democrats and Republicans. They include Beijing’s subsidies for industries it deems important, restrictions on foreign companies’ abilities to do business in China and lack of protection for intellectual property rights.

Japan set to announce easing of strict border measures
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took the rare step of declaring a national public order emergency on Monday in a push to end protests that have paralysed the centre of the Canadian capital for more than two weeks and reverberated across the country. Trudeau and several of his cabinet ministers said the move would allow the government to take a variety of steps, including freezing bank accounts of protesters, to clear the blockade of about 400 trucks in Ottawa and smaller protests that have closed border points in Alberta and Manitoba. “We cannot and will not allow illegal and
dangerous activities to continue,” the Prime Minister said in a speech to the nation, pointing to “serious challenges to law enforcement’s ability to effectively enforce the law”. The invocation of the Emergencies Act confers enormous, if temporary, power on the federal government. It allows the authorities to move aggressively to restore public order, including banning public assembly and restricting travel to and from specific areas. But Trudeau and members of his cabinet offered repeated assurance that the act would not be used to suspend “fundamental rights”.

Deadly landslides wreak havoc in Brazilian city

At least 94 people have died in landslides and flash flooding in the Brazilian city of Petrópolis, officials say. The city, which is located in the mountains north of Rio de Janeiro, was hit by torrential rainfall. Houses in hillside neighbourhoods were destroyed and cars swept away as floodwaters raced through the city’s streets. The city’s mayor has declared a state of emergency. Search and rescue teams are combing the mud for survivors, with Brazil’s National Civil Defence saying on Twitter 24 people had been rescued alive so far, with 94 confirmed deaths.

A Woman Is Cured of H.I.V. Using a Novel Treatment
A
woman of mixed race appears to be the third person ever to be cured of H.I.V., using a new transplant method involving umbilical cord blood that opens up the possibility of curing more people of diverse racial backgrounds than was previously possible, scientists announced on Tuesday. Cord blood is more widely available than the adult stem cells used in the bone marrow transplants that cured the previous two patients, and it does not need to be matched as closely to the recipient. Most donors in registries are of Caucasian origin, so allowing for only a partial match has the potential to cure dozens of Americans who have both H.I.V. and cancer each year, scientists said. The woman, who also had leukemia, received cord blood to treat her cancer. It came from a partially matched donor, instead of the typical practice of finding a bone marrow donor of similar race and ethnicity to the patient’s. She also received blood from a close relative to give her body temporary immune defenses while the transplant took. Researchers presented some of the details of the new case on Tuesday at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Denver, Colo.
Ukraine’s president has called for a day of national unity

The musician is used to performing under pressure: when pro-EU protests erupted in violence in 2014, in this grand columned hall the show went on to the sound of shooting. Now Russia has massed troops on Ukraine’s border, to stop it slipping from Moscow’s orbit into Nato, and Yuri says he feels his country has a “gun to its head” once again.
Warm welcome for Israeli leader in Bahrain
Naftali Bennett is in Bahrain for the first ever official visit by an Israeli prime minister to the Gulf kingdom HiIndia Newsdesk
It is unlikely that Bahrain’s interior ministry band has played the Israeli national anthem much before - but they practiced it to perfection. The song rang out with an honour guard in the courtyard of Al-Qudaibiya Palace - home to the ruling Al-Khalifa monarchy. I watched and then saw smiles swapped in the sunshine between Israel’s Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad. This was a scene unthinkable a few years ago. So was Mr Bennett’s welcome on Monday night - an Israeli leader and Gulf royalty mingling over a red carpet, feted under airport floodlights. But already it was starting to feel less remarkable. Normalisation is becoming normal. Mr Bennett’s trip to Bahrain is the second to a Gulf country in as many months. He went to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in December. Both Arab states have signed trade and defence “framework” agreements with the Israelis. A year and a half has passed since the “Abraham Accords” began, now extending to four Arab countries.

People of such divisive mentality should not be allowed to rule Punjab even for one moment,” said the Prime Minister. PM Modi even referenced Guru Ravidas, a Dalit icon whose birth anniversary yesterday saw various political leaders pausing their campaign to visit temples. “Only yesterday we obserbed Sant Ravidas Jayanti. Where was he born? In Uttar Pradesh, in Varanasi. Will you remove Sant Ravidas from Punjab?” Mr Channi made the comment during a roadshow yesterday, with Priyanka Gandhi standing next to him. Priyanka Gandhi was seen smiling and clapping. Supporters cheered and shouted “Bole so nihal...”.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday lifted an interim stay imposed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on a Haryana law providing 75 per cent reservation in private sector jobs to local candidates. Significantly though, the Haryana government has been told to refrain from taking coercive steps against private sector employers opting not to follow the contentious new law, at this time. Earlier this month Haryana Chief Minister ML Khattar’s government had moved the Supreme Court against a High Court order that called the quota unsustainable and against natural justice. The state argued the order was passed after a 90-second hearing and that its lawyer was not heard.

New Delhi: Chitra Ramkrishna, the former head of the country’s largest stock exchange who allegedly shared confidential information with a Himalayan yogi and took his advice on crucial decisions, was searched by the Income Tax department today. Chitra Ramkrishna was the managing director and CEO of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) between 2013 and 2016 and quit citing “personal reasons”. She shared information including the bourse’s financial projections, business plans and board agenda with the spiritual guru living in the Himalayas, the SEBI said in an order. The market regulator called it “bizarre misconduct” and a “glaring breach” of regulations. “The sharing of financial and business plans of NSE ... is a glaring, if not unimaginable, act that could shake the very foundations of the stock exchange,” SEBI said in its order, imposing penalties on Ms Ramkrishna, NSE and other top former executives for the lapses.
India removes curbs on number of Ukraine flights amidst rising tensions HiIndia Newsdesk
Russia Ukraine Crisis News: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, center, arrives to attend a military drill outside the city of Rivne, northern Ukraine
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has removed the curbs on the number of flights that can be operated between India and Ukraine under the bilateral air bubble arrangement to facilitate travel of Indians from the eastern European nation, according to a senior official. Amid the prevailing situation in Ukraine due to the rising tensions with Russia, India has advised its citizens to temporarily leave Ukraine. There is a growing Russian military presence at Ukraine’s borders, Western countries warned, as Estonia said battle groups were moving ahead of a likely attack to occupy “key terrain,” contradicting Moscow’s insistence of a pullback. More armoured vehicles, helicopters and a field hospital have been spotted, Britain’s defense intelligence chief said in rare public comments. Up to 7,000 more troops have moved to the border in recent days, including some arriving on Wednesday, a senior official in US President Joe Biden’s administration said.

Amidst massive protests by hundreds of truck drivers against Canada’s Covid restrictions, New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh tweeted, “Swastikas and Confederate Justin Trudeau flags have no place in Canada. “We have a responsibility to make our communities safe for everyone — it’s time to ban hate symbols in Canada. No fee for Oman Indians who lost their passports in Cyclone ‘Shaheen’: MEA HiIndia Newsdesk
Company Fired 900 In US Over Zoom, Left With 1,000 More Workers in India The online mortgage lender had been aggressively hiring in both India and the U.S. for most of 2021 to try and keep pace with a wave of refinancing. When Better.com Chief Executive Officer Vishal Garg fired 900 staffers on Zoom late last year, the cuts essentially moved a larger portion of its workforce offshore. The online mortgage lender had been aggressively hiring in both India and the U.S. for most of 2021 to try and keep pace with a wave of refinancing. But a recent regulatory filing shows that Garg’s infamous Zoom cuts -- which followed the U.S. Federal Reserve’s sudden switch on interest rates -- fell much harder stateside than in lower-wage India. The geographic shift, which effectively added 1,000 employees in India, could help Better.com stave off a downturn that’s left the company with declining revenue and higher expenses as it prepares to go public. Vijayapura, Karnataka: Even as the Karnataka High Court hears arguments on allowing religious clothing in educational institutions, another government college in the state has turned into a site of protest for sending away students who insisted on wearing the hijab (headscarf) in classrooms. The Government PU college at Vijayapura in north Karnataka, which allowed hijabs earlier, did not allow students wearing hijabs to enter the classrooms today. The college administration argued that they were only following interim orders of the court, which had allowed schools and colleges to resume only on the condition that no religious clothing be allowed in classrooms. The students, however, say the college did not inform them that they would not be allowed in hijabs or burkhas. Dramatic visuals from the college show some students who had entered the classroom in hijabs and burkhas arguing with the teacher and the Principal of the school requesting them to follow the court order.

“Rahul Gandhi Calls Me A Terrorist”: Arvind Kejriwal Takes On Congress Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had attacked Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday, accusing the rival of being soft on terrorists.
HiIndia Newsdesk
R
ahul Gandhi calls me a terrorist, claimed Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal at an election rally in Punjab’s Mohali. “He will get to know on February 20,” he added. Voting for 117 assembly seats in the state will be held in a single phase on February 20. Mr Kejriwal accused the ruling Congress of terrorising businessmen and even common people. “If a journalist asks them who they’ll vote for, they are scared to even say the truth,” he said. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had attacked Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday, seemingly accusing the rival of being soft on terrorists and untrustworthy on national security. “Whatever happens, a leader of Congress will never be seen at the house of a terrorist. The biggest leader of the Jhaadu (the election symbol of the AAP) can be found at the home of a terrorist. That’s the truth,” Mr Gandhi had said at a rally in Barnala on Tuesday. The Wayanad MP’s remark was a dig at Mr Kejriwal who had stayed overnight at the residence of a former Khalistani terrorist in Punjab’s Moga during the 2017 elections. Being a border state, and with frequent drone interceptions and cross border terror
activities recently, national security is a big poll issue during this election in Punjab. Former Congress chief minister Amarinder Singh, who was forced to resign and subsequently formed his own party, had backed the Centre’s move to increased the jurisdiction of the Border Security Force in the state in the face of fierce opposition from the ruling party. Rahul Gandhi had in his rally yesterday said that those seeking “one chance” to form the government will “destroy Punjab” and the state “will burn”. “Punjab is a border and sensitive state and only the Congress party understands Punjab and can maintain peace in the state... we know if peace is gone then there will be nothing left,” he had said. Mr Kejriwal, with AAP chief minister candidate Bhagwant Mann at his side, vowed to end the “parcha raj” in Punjab if his party comes to power, accusing the Congress party of filing false cases against businessmen and critics of the state government. “The sitting Mayor of Amritsar has joined AAP today, this will strengthen our party further,” the AAP boss said while making his election pitch, and added that steps will be taken to fulfil the people’s demand of making Amritsar a “world icon city”
“Whatever happens, a leader of Congress will never be seen at the house of a terrorist. The biggest leader of the Jhaadu (the election symbol of the AAP) can be found at the home of a terrorist,” Rahul Gandhi said.

UP Polls: ‘Vote for Yogi or Face Bulldozers,’ Says Telangana BJP Leader
elangana BJP MLA T. Raja Singh has said that the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh will identify areas where people are voting against the BJP in large numbers in the ongoing state elections to bulldoze them once BJP returns to power. He has claimed that those who do not want Adityanath to be re-elected came out in large numbers to vote in western Uttar Pradesh, pointing to higher voter turnout in the second phase of polling held in the state on Monday, February 14. In the 55 seats that voted in the second phase, the voter turnout stood at 63% compared to 60.17% recorded in T. Raja Singh, Telangana BJP MLA, with UP chief minister Adityanath the first phase where polling was held on February 10 in 55 seats. to vote Adityanath out of power in the He released a video on his official state. T. Raja Singh has urged “Hindu voters” to come out in large numbers to counter “traitors” who want to vote out the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh Adityanath to be elected as CM again that if you want to stay in UP, you will have to chant Yogi-Yogi. If not, you will have to run away from the state,” he cautioned. In the ongoing elections in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP, which is facing high levels of anti-incumbency, is pitted against the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party, which have been raising issues of social justice. In western Uttar Pradesh particularly, the coming together of Jats and Muslims
due to successful farmers’ protest has spelt trouble for the BJP, which hitherto capitalised on the visible polarisation witnessed between the two communities. Consequently, the BJP has ramped up communal rhetoric expecting electoral headwinds in the state, with no less than Prime Minister Narendra Modi openly calling for “Hindu consolidation”. Many leaders at state-level and lower-rung BJP leadership see this as a subtle cue from the party’s high command to rouse communal passions. As for Raja Singh, he is not new to making hate speeches and divisive comments. He is the lone BJP MLA from Telangana, representing the Goshamahal assembly constituency in Hyderabad.

‘Spiritual Guru’ of Chitra Ramkrishna Ran NSE as ‘Puppet Master’, SEBI Probe Finds The CEO of the biggest stock exchange of the world, NSE, was taking executive decisions for the company under the spiritual guidance of a baba based in Himalayas through emails! The bizarre story though sounds like the plot of a Netflix series, underscores the saying that ‘truth is stranger than fiction’.
I
HiIndia Newsdesk
n her deposition to SEBI wholetime director Anant Barua, Chitra appears as gullible and naïve as a superstitious person who prostrates herself to quacks in hope of salvation. During the interrogation Chitra revealed that she sought guidance from a spiritual baba, Rigyajursama, from the Himalayas that enabled her to run NSE in a better manner. Divine wisdom was granted to her through emails from rigyajursama@outlook.com that led her to appoint Anand Subramanian, an employee at Balmer Lawrie, a PSU that manufactures steel barrels, lubricants, and provides travel and logistics services. Anand, who had no prior experience of stock exchanges got appointed as NSE’s chief strategic officer in April 2013. The Himalayan baba also guided Chitra to re-designate Anand Subramanian as group operating officer and advisor to MD, within the next two years. Asked how a Himalayan cave dweller can access e-mails, Chitra answers that the baba is not limited by laws of physics and may be accessing emails through his metaphysical prowess! Chitra’s interaction with the Himalayan baba also included information about NSE, its personnel, strategic plans and more. She claims to believe that since the baba has no affinity for the material realm, she trusted him not to misuse the information for his selfish ends. As hokum as it sounds, Chitra may be stating the truth, if she was a naïve country folk who believes in warding off evil using chillylemon talismans. However, Chitra was the CEO of the largest stock exchange of the world, an educated woman who dwelled in the world of high-stake finance and cutting-edge technology. As a CEO who was smart enough to pull-off the alleged co-location scam and deflect all charges till the current government decided to throw her out, it may be safely concluded that Chitra is smart and intelligent enough to know the consequences of her actions. The most important premise of proving the criminality of ones actions is Mens rea, which literally means criminal intent. Mens rea indicates that the action that resulted in a crime was not innocent but was guided by intent to perform that action with reasonable knowledge of its consequences. As NSE CEO, Chitra would have known that an institution like NSE was critical to the fiscal integrity of India. Appointing Anand Subramanian to a crucial position like chief strategic officer was an act of undermining the institution of NSE and a blatant misuse of power. Not only did Chitra misuse her own power, but she
also appointed her baba’s candidate in a position of power as well. The NSE premises are secured by government-appointed armed guards. This alone may indicate the crucial position NSE holds in terms of India’s fiscal security. Sharing vital information regarding NSE with a Himalayan baba, an outsider of unknown whereabouts and unknown allegiances, is equivalent to compromising the fiscal security of the country. If only there is a proper investigation, Chitra’s innocence or criminality could be revealed. Prima facie, Chitra’s actions may attract the provisions of Unlawful Activities Act, National Investigation Agency Act and IPC Chapter 6 — Offences Against the State. It is well known that the definitions of war and warfare have changed in today’s world. Rather than waging direct assaults, enemy nations resort to weakening a country internally through biotic, financial and ethnic warfare. Who knows what kind of entity the unknown Himalayan baba, with access to emails in caves, is? Knowingly or unknowingly, Chitra may have been in collusion with anti-India forces to undermine the Indian capital market. All these may be mere speculations but if they turn out to be true, the ramifications will be dangerous. The question is: why is SEBI neither pushing for investigation by statutory agencies, nor has it even filed an FIR against Chitra, so far? In fact, if Chitra is booked for criminal offences, her employer NSE will also be booked as a company, under the same offenses. The criminal culpability would also befall upon the board and officials who were complicit in Chitra’s abuse of power. To severe or minimise their culpability, it would be better if the NSE board itself takes cognizance of Chitra’s actions and files an FIR against her. If by imposing a fine of Rs.3 crore, the regulator believes it has set an example for those who may undermine such institutions, it may be mistaken. Also with a fine of a mere Rs.2 crore on NSE if SEBI believes that the integrity of the institution will be restored for millions of investors who trust NSE with their savings and investments, it may be in for a few surprises. Let’s hope Chitra’s Himalayan baba does not turn out to be a Mandarin spy or a terrorist.

n a blistering attack on opposition parties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today accused the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party of being “partners in crime”. He called AAP a “photocopy” of the Congress and said both of them are not happy with the Ayodhya temple or whenever the army does something. “Don’t tolerate these people,” he said to a cheering audience at an election rally in Punjab’s Pathankot and added that “one party looted Punjab, and the other is doing corruption in Delhi”. AAP took support from the Congress to form the government in Delhi as well, PM Modi pointed out. “Punjab has decided, iss baar pakka parivartan. (This time change for sure),” he said. The Prime Minister claimed that the BJP looks at Punjab from the perspective of “Punjabiyat” whereas his rivals look at the state only through the lens of political power. The PM also mentioned the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor - the road to Darbar Sahib Kartarpur (the final resting place of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism) in Pakistan. “They (Congress) abandoned Kartarpur Gurudwara in Pakistan. Should they have not made efforts to keep it in India? In 1965, if they tried, we would have had Gurunanak’s birthplace in India,” he said while claiming credit for the development of the corridor. The PM accused the Congress of belittling and insulting the sacrifices of the soldiers who died during the 2016 Pathankot attack. He said that the country was together in the response to the attack except for the Congress party.

The move came amid an intense diplomatic effort to avert a feared Russian invasion of its pro-Western neighbour and after Moscow amassed more than 100,000 troops near Ukraine’s borders. That’s what makes me more excited about our association. I am looking forward to being a part of the exhilarating journey. What do you like and hate about reality shows? Reality shows have an intimate touch to them. One can connect and get attached to the participants and their journey. There is a relatability value. I think that’s what makes them successful among the audience. As a viewer, I am drawn towards the same factors. There isn’t anything that I hate about them. Was waiting to collaborate with Anubhav Sinha: Rajkummar Rao “I was waiting for the collaboration to happen. He is one of the finest filmmakers we have. After working we have become good friends. It is very special to us,” Rajkummar Rao, who concluded shooting for the film in December, told. “I read the script again to see how they are adapting it in Hindi language. Shailesh, who has directed the original, didn’t want to recreate what he had done earlier. He made sure it looked different. For him the whole point is to start from scratch and treat it as a fresh original film,” he said. “The story is so thrilling, every five minutes there is something happening. The twists and turns are brilliantly written and it has come out very well,” he added. Rao has wrapped up the shooting of Netflix Original film Monica, O My Darling, directed by Vasan Bala and produced by Sriram Raghavan. “It is a great thriller like how Sriram sir’s movies are. It should be released this year,” he said.
Had self-doubt when the film came my way: Alia Bhatt Initially slated to do Inshallah with Bhansali, Alia on her apprehensions about switching to Gangubai Kathiawadi and finding her voice in the 10-year run in Bollywood

n 2012, Alia Bhatt stepped into Bollywood, playing a rich brat in Karan Johar’s Student of the Year. Cut to 2022: she is gearing up for the release of Gangubai Kathiawadi, the movie that the trade is pinning its hopes on this month. The past 10 years have been quite a journey for Bhatt as she grew from film to film, to emerge as one of the finest artistes of the current generation. Now, as she headlines a Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie, the actor says her first reaction was fear. “I was scared. I was meant to do a love story with sir [Inshallah starring Salman Khan was called off]. Till that point, I hadn’t read the book [Mafia Queens of Mumbai] or known the story of Gangubai. I didn’t expect a film of this nature at all. So, when I heard the narration, I asked sir everything I feared: Do you think I can do this? Don’t you think I am a little young? He said, ‘I will make you do it.’ It was then I told myself that there should be no scope of doubt in my head when a film like this comes my way. I had self-doubt. So, I put in all the extra effort I could. But in this case, doubt was the key to knowledge, which made me explore the extremes of what I can do with this part.” Bhatt knew Gangubai Kathiawadi would be an opportunity of a lifetime. “Ek mauka tha, maine dil khol ke perform kiya,” she smiles, adding that she is unable to shake off the character even months after the shoot. “I have lived in Gangu’s world for two years. Even after we were done shooting, I would land up at sir’s office to watch the film’s visuals. I have never been this consumed by a character. SLB is the director I wanted to work with since I was nine.” She is, in some ways, glad that Inshallah didn’t work out.

But she said that this was limited to meetings, and never actually translated to work. “I do accept and acknowledge that there is a lot of love and respect for my mother and brother in the industry. And so, someone will have a cup of chai with me but I won’t get a movie or a show because you are so-andso’s daughter or son, at least not for me. I still have to earn that. CURRENT AFFAIRS
As Modi Ramps Up Communal Rhetoric, Akhilesh, Mayawati Focus on Social Justice Accusing the opposition of preventing “Hindu consolidation”, Modi said: “Is this democracy? You are openly saying you want to divide the Hindu votes. Then whose votes are you trying to gather.”
O
n a day when Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav at a rally promised to conduct a caste census within three months if voted to power, Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing a gathering in Kanpur Dehat attempted to pivot the election campaign towards issues of Hindutva. Referring to a conversation Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra had with Times of India recently, he said opposition ranks were trying to prevent “Hindu consolidation”. He said that the Election Commission of India should take note of a remark by Moitra that her party TMC tied up with “one party” in Goa to “divide Hindu votes”. “Is this democracy? You are openly saying you want to divide the Hindu votes. Then whose votes are you trying to gather,” he asked, urging voters of Goa and Uttar Pradesh to bury such a “political mindset”.
The saffron party, on the other hand, has majorly relied upon an aggressive Hindutva plank, mixed with doses of nationalism. With discontent over economic distress palpable across Uttar Pradesh, much of the saffron party’s development rhetoric has not stuck with a large section of the electorate. On the other hand, Samajwadi Party has focussed its campaign around economic distress and promised a range of welfare programmes, including restoration of the old pension scheme, cost-free electricity for agricultural purposes and opening up job vacancies in the government. At the same time, it has attempted to stitch together a broad-based social alliance of different OBC groups, Dalits, minorities and a section of Brahmins by accommodating smaller, regional allies. The Bahujan Samaj Party has also raised similar issues of distress while attempting to weave a larger communitarian coalition of Dalits, Muslims and some sections of “upper” caste groups. In fact, BSP supremo

Mayawati on Monday, February 14, spoke about the “casteist, pro-capitalist” tendencies of the Adityanath government at a rally in the Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh. The saffron party, on the other hand, has majorly relied upon an aggressive Hindutva plank, mixed with doses of nationalism. With discontent over economic distress palpable across Uttar Pradesh, much of the saffron party’s development rhetoric has not stuck with a large section of the electorate. Thus, Modi’s remark as well as Akhilesh Yadav’s emphasis on the caste census revealed the key fault lines in Uttar Pradesh: social justice politics pitched against Hindu communalism. It may be noted that a large section of OBC leaders recently quit the BJP to join the SP, which has emerged as the primary challenger to the saffron party. Many of them – especially Swami Prasad Maurya and Om Prakash Rajbhar who deserted the NDA a few years ago – alleged that the Adityanath government has deliberately undermined issues like demand for a caste census or OBC sub-categorisation that have the potential to reveal inequality among OBC groups. The upper-caste tilt of the BJP, they said, is what suffocated them in the NDA.
It now appears that the saffron party had to finally depend on Modi’s charisma to divide the electorate along religious lines – a tactic that may come across as the party’s desperate attempt to enthuse its core voters and workers. Many seasoned observers believe that the BJP’s core support base dwindled in the first phase of elections, with many of their supporters either not turning up to vote or ended up voting against the party. Therefore, Modi’s remarks can be seen as subtle permission to them to indulge in communal polarisation in the next few phases. Immediately after Modi’s speech, BJP MLA from eastern Uttar Pradesh’s Domariyaganj Raghavendra Singh was heard saying in a now-viral video that if he was re-elected, the Muslims would switch from skull caps to “tilak”. Uttar Pradesh has been witness to such aggressive, communal politics for the last few decades. However, what has changed is that in the last few years is that the prime minister has led the campaign for religious polarisation, bringing us back to the question of whether Moitra actually said what Modi passed on to the gathering. Responding to the comment, Mahua Moitra likened Modi with “saffron sahibs” and alleged that they are “masters of twisting the truth” to suit their own political BJP’s desperate attempts to polarise interests. The Wire could check her original statement. election “We have prevented a consolidation of Hindu Well-aware of the impact that the opposition’s social votes (in north Goa) by tying up with the MGP justice rhetoric may have on marginalilsed groups in (Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party),” she replied to a Uttar Pradesh, Modi’s statement on Moitra’s remark question on whether the new entrant TMC has split clearly is aimed at pivoting the electoral debate towards non-BJP votes in the coastal state. IPL auction 2022 witnessed some intense bidding as teams assembled their respective squads the best they could. Some of the biggest names went under the hammer, with a fair few surprises seen. Ishan Kishan was the most expensive buy of IPL auction 2022 with Mumbai Indians shelling out a whopping Rs 15.25 crore for the wicketkeeper-batter. A total of 204 players were sold and Rs 551.70 crore was spent by the 10 franchises. However, there were some big names that found no takers in the IPL auction. Washington Sundar ruled out of T20I series
At the pre-match presser, before India’s T20I series opener against the West Indies on Wednesday, skipper Rohit Sharma was asked about Virat Kohli’s ongoing batting inconsistency and what role should Rohit Sharma the captain and coach play when a great player like him goes through an elongated fallow period. “If you guys (media) can keep quiet for a while, everything
will fall in place. He (Kohli) is in great mental space. He has been playing international cricket for more than a decade. He knows how to handle pressure,” Rohit snapped back. Kohli hasn’t scored an international hundred for nearly twoand-a-half years now. Maybe, it would be an exaggeration to say that he has been going through a crisis period as a batsman, for only a month ago he scored two half-centuries in the three-match ODI series in South Africa. But by his lofty standards, he has lost his consistency.

Brighton had been the better side before halftime with United again looking disjointed and lacking spark.

‘He did look scared on Dubai pitches’: ‘Surprised’ Gavaskar explains why Raina should have been picked in IPL Auction Despite being the fourth highest run-getter in IPL history with 205 appearances and being Chennai Super Kings’ leading runs scorer, Raina, who had a base price of INR 2 crore, went unsold on day 1. HiIndia Newsdesk
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar admitted to being surprised at Indian Premier League (IPL) great Suresh Raina going unsold at the mega auction in Bengaluru last weekend for the 2022 season. Gavaskar, in conversation did feel that Amit Mishra, who hardly made any appearances last season, would go unsold, he felt that Raina should have been picked. “May be not so much for Amit Mishra because he hardly got to play any matches last year. And it was clearly evident that his bowling did not have that zip. And also there is fielding. Being a good fielder is mandatory nowadays
because you need to save those singles as well. So that might be the reason behind Mishra not being picked by a franchise.” “For Raina I was definitely surprised. He is left-handed, does off-spin bowling, and is experienced. In the last season, in the Dubai pitches, where there is a lot of bounce, he did look a little scared and this why I feel people must have felt that even in India we will have fast bowlers and so may be he wasn’t picked for that reason. But only the franchises could tell us why they had this feeling about him,” he said.

Three Female Including Indian-American Harvard Graduate Students Accusing Univ. Of Ignoring Sexual Harassment By Prof. HiIndia Newsdesk
Amulya Mandava, Lilia Kilburn and Margaret Czerwienski, Harvard graduate students suing Harvard University
BOSTON, MA – Three Harvard University graduate students including Indian American Amulya Mandava, have accused the educational institution of willfully ignoring a pattern of sexual harassment and retaliation by a tenured anthropology professor. In a lawsuit, along with Mandava, Margaret Czerwienski and Lilia Kilburn charge professor John Comaroff, 77, kissed and groped students without their consent and threatened to sabotage their careers if they complained. The complaint, filed in Boston federal court on Feb.8, alleges that the university failed to protect the three of them from Comaroff ’s harassment, retaliation, and abuse of power. Further, they say, they have all been forced to radically alter their fields of study. Comaroff is well known in his field of work and used that power the students say to forcibly kiss Kilburn, grope her in public, and even graphically speak of her rape. When Czerwienski and Mandava warned others female students and reported Comaroff to the university’s authorities, the university failed to act and instead were subject to the professor’s retaliation. The lawsuit further accuses Harvard of violating Massachusetts law by obtaining and disseminating Kilburn’s therapy records
without her consent. The complaint requests a jury trial. Central to the lawsuit are Kilburn’s allegations while the other students are there in their role of whistle-blowers. But Mandava was also the recipient of unwanted attention when she first encountered him as an undergraduate at the University of Chicago, she told the New York Times. Mandava’s twitter handle is full of retweets of news reports detailing the lawsuit. Her website says she has worked in the National Institutes of Health Department of Bioethics as a pre-doctoral fellow. From 2010-2012 she served on the Clinical Center’s Bioethics Consultation Service and published and presented papers on research ethics. Following this, she pursued her master’s in theological studies at Harvard Divinity School, with the aid of a Harvard Presidential Scholarship, designed for students with a demonstrated commitment to public service. At HDS, Mandava researched theological ethical traditions and lived experiences of race and class inequality in American religious life. Her website says that she is currently engaged in an ethnographic study of inequality and the caste-gender nexus, focused on Tamil Nadu.

EDISON, NJ -The IRS, under pressure from lawmakers, said late Wednesday it will suspend the mailing of automatic collection notices, which are triggered when its records show a taxpayer owes tax and has not filed a tax return. The agency has millions of unprocessed tax returns from the 2020 tax year,

The announcement comes a day after National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins testified to Congress, saying the the IRS will have “extraordinarily high” delays in processing returns again this year. Collins said it’s due in part to the agency’s 2020 backlog, which includes six million individual tax returns, 2.3 million amended tax returns and another two million quarterly tax returns from employers as of late December She also said only 11% of taxpayers looking for help from the IRS by phone in 2021 could get through to an agent.

In June 2021, the government had banned 59 Chinese apps including the popular short video sharing platform TikTok, UC Browser, WeChat and Bigo Live, saying they were prejudicial to the sovereignty, integrity and security of the country.

Lucknow: A BJP MLA in Uttar Pradesh today defended his hate speech, littered with anti-Muslim slur, that has gone viral in the middle of elections. In a video, Raghvendra Singh was heard saying that if he was re-elected, Muslims would switch from skull caps to “tilak”. Facing a backlash over his outrageous comments, the MLA from Domariyaganj in eastern UP said today he had meant it as a “conditional speech” to counter what he called “Islamic terrorism”. “When there were Islamic terrorists here, Hindus were forced to wear gol topis (skull caps). I said ‘conditional’. I am ready to sacrifice anything for Hindu pride. I meant that if Muslims are trying everything they can to defeat me, I will not stay silent,” Raghvendra Singh said in a video. Singh is the UP in-charge of the Hindu Yuva Vahini, a rightwing group founded by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The UP police say they have filed a case after the video of his virulent campaign speech emerged online. “If I become MLA again, like goltopis (skull caps) have vanished, next time the miyan log (term used derogatorily for Muslims) will wear the tilak,” Singh had said. In 2017, he won from the Domariyaganj seat by some 200 votes.

In this new India, development is for all and there will be appeasement of none,” Yogi Adityanath told news agency ANI in an interview.

How to Keep Your Heart Young Exercise and proper diet are a good start. But these cardiologistapproved tips offer surprisingly helpful additions to any routine
G
iven our current health crisis, it’s easy to forget that COVID-19 is not the leading cause of death in the world. That distinction belongs to heart disease, which killed more than nine million adults in 2019 and represents 16 per cent of all deaths globally according to the WHO. Over six million of these deaths occurred in people between the ages of 30 and 70 and the highest incidents occurred in China, followed by India, Russia and the US. Research shows that COVID-19 itself may harm the heart, by either hindering the flow of oxygen or initiating a potentially damaging immune response. Clearly, it is more important than ever to take control of your cardiovascular health no matter your age: These 25 facts are a perfect place to begin any heart-health education.
1 Get screened early
The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends that everyone over age 18 get regularly screened for hypertension, or high blood pressure. According to results of a 2019 survey conducted by the Cardiological Society of India, almost one in every three Indian adults are hypertensive. And a study in PLOS Medicine revealed that less than 45 per cent remain undiagnosed. Left untreated, high blood pressure and high cholesterol can lead to heart disease, an aneurysm or even a stroke.
2 Manage stress and anxiety
Stress plays a role in 77 per cent of all health concerns, including digestive trouble, an inability to lose weight and heart disease, says Nikki Martinez, PsyD, an adjunct psychology instructor at Southern New Hampshire University. “When you reach an age where your body is going through changes and is not bouncing back as it once did, stress and anxiety can start to become quite significant issues,” she explains. “Learning solid coping skills, stress management, mindfulness, and healthy outlets can truly impact each and every area of your functioning.”
3 Pay attention to your shoes
Oedema, the buildup of excess fluid in the body’s tissues, can be the result of congestive heart failure. When your heart doesn’t pump blood as effectively as it should, the blood instead collects and causes swelling, most commonly in the feet and legs. “People may notice their shoes feel tight or their socks make lines on their ankles,” says Gregg Fonarow, MD, interim chief of the University of
California, Los Angeles, division of cardiology.
4 Watch the cleaning chemicals
that also have heart-protective properties, including empagliflozin (Jardiance), dulaglutide (Trulicity) and semaglutide (Ozempic).
5 Toss your plastic containers
9 Vegetarians, be aware that you are not immune

Chemicals commonly found in plastic water bottles and food containers, such as bisphenol A “There’s a lot of hype around plant-based diets, and with good reason. Eating a diet low in animal (BPA) and phthalates, leach into the contents of sources of protein and fat and high in produce has these containers. LIFESTYLE
An orange dress with creative cut-outs and a blazer jacket with boots, Deepika Padukone is making 2022 look great so far Creative cut-outs
From cut-out catsuits to cut-out dresses, we have seen it all when it comes to this trend the past year. And it is safe to say the trend continues to have its moment well into 2022. Vouching for it, Padukone wore a bright orange number by the master of cutouts, David Koma. The bodycon dress was paired with a contrasting black tie-up pump. The actor finished out her look with a pair of statement golden shoulder grazers from Misho.
Lady in red We have all borne witness to Padukone’s endless love for all things leather. Further showing us her love for the luxe fabric, the actor was seen promoting her movie in a fiery red number from Milo Maria. The crisscross neck bodycon midi dress was paired with a matching pair of red pumps. Padukone chose to skip out on accessories keeping the dress the highlight of her look.
The thrill of frill Seen in a red frilled neck blouse paired with leather leggings, Padukone took to Instagram with yet another look steeped in sophistication. Pairing two contrasting elements of frills and leather, the actor gave us a look perfectly balanced in chic and edge. She finished out her look with a simple bun and dangling gold earrings.
Fit to print
Print on print is a fail-safe way of making a statement and Padukone shows us how. She posted a picture of herself on Instagram wearing her printed Adidas sweatshirt with twinning sweatpants. She kept the overall look fuss-free while elevating it with a statement-high ponytail and dainty earrings.
Include Sooji In Your Diet To Reap Its Health Benefits From upma and halwa to delicacies like rava dosa, semolina or sooji is one of those wonder ingredients that can be used prepare a wide range of Indian dishes. Made from rough, coarsely ground whole wheat, sooji is healthier than more refined products such as flour. Its light texture ensures easy digestion—the reason why it makes for a great mid-meal snack. With low fat content and zero cholesterol, sooji can help regulate your weight and even contribute to weight-loss.
Benefits of sooji
The grain is rich in iron and can, therefore, improve blood circulation and reduce the mineral’s deficiency in the body. The high calcium content is good for bone health, while the presence of minerals such as magnesium, zinc and phosphorus can enable you to maintain a healthy nervous system. However, sooji can trigger allergic reactions, especially
in people with wheat allergy, ranging from nausea to stomach cramps and diarrhoea and even asthma. People with celiac disease and gluten sensitivity are also advised to steer clear of sooji, as it may cause bloating, constipation and even damage the intestine.
Diverse uses of sooji
As a foodgrain, semolina is extremely versatile. Apart from halwa and dosas, you can use it for baking cakes, and in pancakes, pastas and porridge. You can also make cookies, biscuits and rusk from it. Try substituting besan with sooji while making laddus for a guilt-free dessert.
Making Money: 6 Habits Of Wealthy People 1. You must get insurance, depending on your age, wealth and commitments. 2. Diversify your investment portfolio across debt (debt mutual fund, fixed deposits, bonds, debentures, etc.) and equity, wisely. However, it needs to be tailored to your individual needs. 3. Identify and review your financial goals at regular intervals. These are responsibilities and dreams for which we earn, save, invest and sometimes even borrow. 4. Make it a point to create a family budget at the beginning of every month. “The term ‘budget’ can
seem intimidating,” one of my clients once said. “Call it your spending list instead,” I advised. A budget is nothing but the amount of money we are planning to spend on our various needs and wants. At the end of each month, you will know exactly how much money you are spending and, more importantly, if you are overspending. 5. Keep your family members abreast of all long-term financial transactions and also keep updating your wealth documents. It is very common for financial planners to meet clients without an updated KYC
(Know Your Customer) with banks or other financial institutions. This leads to various problems sooner or later—for instance, old addresses and other personal information remain on record or investments stay linked to dormant or closed bank accounts. I suggest that couples go on a ‘financial date’, where they spend at least two hours every three months to evaluate their financial situation, documents and goals. 6. Making a will, updating nominations and reevaluating health-insurance needs are a few other habits that go a long way in wealth creation.

Mumbai Indians Buy Ishan Kishan For Rs 15.25 Crore, Most Expensive Buy So Far HiIndia Newsdesk
India wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan became the most expensive player in the IPL 2022 auction after Mumbai Indians secured his service for Rs 15.25 crore. Earlier, it was Shreyas Iyer, who also predictably, became one of the highestpaid player among the marquee set with Kolkata Knight Riders making a whopping bid of Rs 12.25 crore after an intense price war at the auctions. Iyer’s entry in KKR fold ensures a captaincy candidate for them while the Shah Rukh Khan co-owned franchise also got back their Australian pace spearhead Pat Cummins for half the price at Rs 7.25
Shreyas Iyer is sold to Kolkata Knight Riders for a whopping Rs 12.25 crores. The Kolkata outfit might have also signed their new skipper. Punjab Kings are also heavily active, they have roped in Shikhar Dhawan for Rs 8.25 crores, and Kagiso Rabada for Rs 9.25 crores.
crore.nOne of the biggest gainer was South African pacer Kagiso Rabada who fetched more than a million dollar with Punjab Kings successfully buying him for Rs 9.25 crore. As it was known, senior India players had some great bids going their way with Shikhar Dhawan getting Rs 8.25 crore from Punjab Kings. Ravichandran Ashwin also got Rs 5 crore winning bid from Rajasthan Royals while Trent Boult, with his left-arm swing bowling, laughed his way to the bank with a handsome Rs 8 crore bid from Rajasthan Royals. Mohamed Shami was taken by Gujarat Titans for Rs 6.75 crore, the same amount that Lucknow Giants paid for Quinton de Kock.

An attack by the more than 100,000 Russian troops currently massed next to Ukraine “could occur any day now,” White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters in Washington. Dismissing speculation that the Kremlin would never trigger the crisis while the Beijing Olympics were still underway in close Russian ally China, Sullivan said such an attack “could occur” before the Games end on February 20.

Students in Karnataka colleges are demanding that they be allowed to attend classes wearing a hijab

mid a global uproar on the hijab row, India today said that motivated comments on internal issues are not welcome. Muslim students in several Karnataka colleges are demanding that they be allowed to attend classes wearing a hijab. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that those who know India well would have a proper appreciation of the realities. “A matter regarding dress code in some educational institutions in the State of Karnataka is under judicial examination by the Hon’ble High Court of Karnataka. Our constitutional framework and mechanisms, as well as our democratic ethos and polity, are the context in which issues are considered and resolved,” Mr Bagchi said in a statement. “Those who know India well would have a proper appreciation of those realities,” he added. Mr Bagchi’s response came when asked by the media about comments by some countries on dress code in some educational institutions in Karnataka.
New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh government was told off by the Supreme Court for trying to recover money for property damage during the 2019 anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests from those identified as protesters. Please examine this, we are giving one opportunity till February 18,” the court said. The Uttar Pradesh government has acted like a “complainant, adjudicator and prosecutor” in conducting the proceedings to attach the properties of the accused, said a bench of justices DY Chandrachud and Surya Kant.

“Don’t Spread To Larger Level”: Supreme Court ‘No’ To Urgent Hijab Hearing
Unfortunate that PM openly lies: Arvind Kejriwal
A girl in Karnataka had approached the Supreme Court after the High Court yesterday advised students to avoid wearing “religious garments” until it decides on a case involving hijab restrictions in schools and colleges. HiIndia Newsdesk
New Delhi: On a petition linked to the hijab row raging in Karnataka, the Supreme Court today rejected an urgent hearing and said, “We will interfere only at an appropriate time.” A girl in Karnataka had approached the Supreme Court after the High Court yesterday advised students to avoid wearing “religious garments” until it decides on a case involving hijab restrictions in schools and colleges. “Don’t spread these things to a national level. We will
interfere only at an appropriate time,” Chief Justice NV Ramana said, declining an urgent hearing on the petition. When a lawyer pressed the court to take it up, arguing that the case had “far-reaching implications” and that students had been wearing the hijab or head scarf for 10 years, the Supreme Court remained firm. “Please do not spread it to larger levels. we know what is happening. Think over, is it proper to bring these things to Delhi? The national level? If there is anything wrong, we will protect...” Chief Justice Ramana said. The girl’s petition had challenged the Karnataka High Court’s remarks that educational institutions in the state can open for now but with no religious clothing on campus, for the sake of peace. Schools and colleges were shut down earlier this week in an escalating row over hijab restrictions in class. The protests that began against a hijab ban in one government-run college in Udupi spread to many other institutions where girls wearing hijabs were not allowed entry. As saffron scarf-wearing students launched rival protests, violence at one college forced the police to fire teargas to control the flare-up.The Karnataka High Court is hearing a petition challenging hijab restrictions in colleges. Yesterday, a three-member bench said it would resume the hearing on Monday.
“Not Our Demand”: Lata Mangeshkar’s Brother On Shivaji Park Memorial Row HiIndia Newsdesk
The demand put the Shiv Sena in a tight spot as the party has an emotional connection to the public park. Lata Mangeshkar’s Mumbai: Lata Mangeshkar’s brother brother Hridaynath Hridaynath Mangeshkar said today Mangeshkar that his family has nothing to do
with the demand for a memorial for the legendary singer at Mumbai’s Shivaji park, which has become controversial because of an acrimonious political back-and-forth. “Please stop politicizing the issue of Lata didi’s memorial at Shivaji park. The demand for it has not come from our family as we don’t wish for it,” Hridaynath Mangeshkar said in a fervent appeal in Marathi.

Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Friday hit out against Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his statements in Parliament accusing the Opposition governments of instigating migrant workers to leave at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. “The Prime Minister is lying. religious clothing in class “until further orders”, the Karnataka High Court said in an interim order while hearing a petition challenging a “dress code” by some colleges restricting hijabs in class. The order is only for colleges that have specified a uniform or dress code. “We request the State Government and all other stakeholders to reopen the educational institutions and allow the students to return to the classes at the earliest. Pending consideration of all these petitions, we restrain all the students regardless of their religion or faith from Hijab Row: The High Court said that the wearing saffron shawls (Bhagwa), scarfs, hijab, religious issue needs a deeper examination. flags or the like within the classroom, until further Bengaluru: All students must avoid orders,” said the bench headed by Chief Justice Ritu wearing the hijab, saffron shawls or any Raj Awasthi.
US urges Canada to use federal powers to ease border protest disruption HiIndia Newsdesk
Canada should use federal powers to ease the growing economic disruption caused by the blockage of a vital US-Canada trade route by protesters opposed to coronavirus mandates, US President Joe Biden’s administration said on Thursday. The closure of the Ambassador Bridge, North America’s busiest international land border crossing and a vital supply route for Detroit’s carmakers, has halted some auto output and left officials scrambling to limit economic damage.
