Allison Fluke-Ekren faces up to 20 years in prison HiIndia Newsdesk
A US woman has confessed to leading an all-female squadron for the so-called Islamic State group in Syria, as well as plotting attacks on American soil. Allison Fluke-Ekren pleaded guilty to one count of providing support to the group and admitted to training over 100 women and girls for violence. The mother and teacher-turned IS leader left the US in 2011, and worked with a terror group in Libya before Syria. She faces a maximum of 20 years in prison at her sentencing in October. Fluke-Ekren, 42, a former biology student and school teacher, travelled to Syria to join the group after living in Egypt and Turkey. While with IS, she led Khatiba Nusaybah, an all-female battalion based in its de-facto capital of Raqqa, Syria. Her primary role was to teach women and children to use weapons, ranging from AK-47 rifles and grenades to suicide vests, according to officials. In a Virginia court on Tuesday, she admitted to training the all-female group, but claimed she had never attempted to recruit children. “We didn’t intentionally train any young girls,” she said, according to CNN.

Women who say they were sexually assaulted by a disgraced US national gymnastics team doctor plan to sue the FBI for $1bn (£800m). Claimants say the FBI mishandled credible complaints of sexual assaults by Larry Nassar. They include Olympic gymnastics gold medallists Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney. Nassar is serving up to 175 years in prison for molesting gymnasts. The agency’s own watchdog found
the FBI disregarded allegations about Nassar and made early errors in its investigation. Last year, a long-awaited report from the US justice department’s Office of the Inspector General gave a scathing assessment of the federal agency’s investigation into Nassar. Various missteps and cover-ups by FBI agents allowed Nassar’s abuse to continue for more than a year after the case was first opened in 2015, the report found. “My fellow survivors and I were betrayed by every institution that was supposed to protect us - the US Olympic Committee, USA Gymnastics, the FBI and now the Department of Justice,” Kayla Maroney, an Olympic gold medallist, said in a statement. Two weeks ago, the US Justice Department decided not to prosecute t he two FBI agents acc us ed of mishandling the investigation. The plaintiffs are seeking different amounts in damages but their total claims are expected to exceed $1bn.

World faces largest cost-of-living crisis in a generation: UN report
HiIndia Newsdesk
United Nations, June 9 (IANS) The world is facing a cost-of-living crisis unseen in at least a generation, partly due to the Ukraine conflict, said a UN report. “The largest cost-of-living crisis of the 21st century has come when people and countries have a limited capacity to cope,” said the second report of the
Global Crisis Response Group on Food, Energy and Finance over the Ukraine conflict on Wednesday. The Ukraine conflict has trapped the people of the world between a rock and a hard place. The rock is the severe price shocks in food, energy and fertiliser markets, given the centrality of both Russia and Ukraine in these markets. The hard place is the extremely fragile context in which this crisis arrived: a world facing the cascading crises of Covid-19 and climate change, it added. “A shock of this magnitude would have been a significant challenge no matter the timing. Now, it is of historic, century-defining proportions,” the report said. The Food and Agriculture Organisation’s food price index is at near-record levels and 20.8 per cent higher than at this time in 2021, Xinhua news agency reported. Energy market volatility has increased with the recognition that a prolonged conflict will lead to higher energy prices in the medium to long term.

uropean Central Bank (ECB)’s April meeting minutes and the blog post in May by its President seem to suggest an inflection point in the assessment of its appropriate monetary policy response. The April policy statement had earlier stressed on downside risks to growth from the war, muted wage increases, big difference between the economic (read demand) situation in the US and Euro Area, flexibility and gradualism in the conduct of monetary policy and its identified normalisation sequence of ending net asset purchases in Q3 followed by commencing rate hikes. It had nevertheless acknowledged near term upside risks to inflation and initial signs of inflation expectations edging above target. The minutes of this meeting, released later in May, revealed more hawkish discussions on the policy path. This included the inconsistency of a highly accommodative monetary policy stance with high inflation and rising inflation expectations, criteria for rate hikes being already met, the need for asset purchases to end soon in Q3 and for rates to move soon to neutral. Broader price pressures in March, inflation expectations moving higher, hit to growth from the war being insufficient to meaningfully reduce medium-term inflation and other factors aiding inflation persistence (China’s pandemic response, likely future wage pressures which need to be preempted, etc.) drove this. The overall policy balance seemed to have tilted towards a more hawkish path.
ran the trial, said, “The immunotherapy shrank the tumours much faster than I expected.” Luis Diaz, who was the other researcher running the trial and is a member of the White House National Cancer Advisory Board, said, “It’s really exciting. I think this is a great step forward for patients.” Usually, rectal cancer is treated with chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, But Cercek said, “The most exciting part of this is that every single one of our patients has only needed immunotherapy. We haven’t radiated anybody, and we haven’t put anybody through surgery.” She added, “They have preserved normal bowel function, bladder function, sexual function, fertility. Women have their uterus and ovaries.” But in the Journal editorial, a cancer expert, Hanna K. Sanoff from the University of North Carolina, cautioned, “Whether the results of this small study conducted at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center will be generalisable to a broader population of patients with rectal cancer is also not known.” “Despite these uncertainties,” she added, “Cercek and colleagues and their patients who agreed to forgo standard treatment for a promising but unknown future with immunotherapy have provided what may be an early glimpse of a revolutionary treatment shift.” Sreejith Balasubramanian
Will ECB be late(st) to join the central banks’ party? The ECB now seems very likely to join global central banks’ rate hike party. Rates could be hiked by 25bps each in July and September if it decides to exit negative rates by the end of Q3, but what will be the story beyond this? Consumer confidence indicators have already fallen very sharply since March.
If there was any ambiguity regarding this, four days later, a rare blog post by the President of the ECB cleared this. It detailed the combination of price shocks, including stimulus-driven demand, causing inflation to be broad and persistent and why pre-pandemic structural disinflationary pressures are unlikely to return as geopolitics drive supply chains and companies transition
to green energy. Above target inflation expectations could thus prove sticky. For growth, accumulated savings and the labour market recovery are tailwinds but consumer confidence has dipped. Overall, ending net asset purchases very early in Q3 (likely June), commencing rate hikes in July and exiting negative rates by end of Q3 was deemed fit. Gradualism (pace), but now only if appropriate, optionality (continuous assessment) and flexibility (reinvestment of maturing assets) continued to be part
of the narrative. To meet the extant official forecast of 5.1 per cent y/y inflation in 2022, average inflation for the rest of the year has to be 3.4 per cent, very low now given recent price pressures and outlook. Updated forecast this month will most likely be increased. The ECB now seems very likely to join global central banks’ rate hike party. Rates could be hiked by 25bps each in July and September if it decides to exit negative rates by the end of Q3, but what will be the story beyond this? Consumer confidence indicators have already fallen very sharply since March. Households’ expectation of their financial situation over the next one year has fallen very sharply while the European Commission’s business climate indicator continues to ease. Will impact of supply shocks and rate hikes constrain growth enough to demand a slower pace of further hikes and/or a lower terminal rate? Or will the ECB hike rates above neutral? The key will be whether slower growth manifests materially by then and reduce concerns of second-order passthrough of inflation.

T
he Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suspended Nupur Sharma, its spokesperson, after her remarks during a television show sparked a row and drew a massive backlash from Gulf countries. Ms Sharma later unconditionally withdrew the controversial statement and said in a statement posted on Twitter that it was never her intention to hurt anyone’s religious feelings. According to her LinkedIn profile, Ms Sharma is an advocate by profession and a prominent BJP leader. A law graduate from Delhi University, she completed an LLM from the London School of Economics (LSE) in 2011. Ms Sharma has been involved in politics from her college days. She also worked as an Ambassador for Teach For India from July 2009 to June 2010, according to her LinkedIn profile. Ms Sharma’s political career began in 2008 when she was elected as the president of Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU), according to Australia-India Youth Dialogue. She then worked with the BJP’s youth wing. Ms Sharma contested the 2015 Delhi elections against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal from the New Delhi seat. She, however, lost the election for the seat. The BJP took action against Ms Sharma after violence erupted in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur over her remarks.
the core of India’s bilateral relationships with each of these countries will remain unaffected, based as these relations are on the Indian economy, trade and investment, the sale of oil to India, and the huge Indian workforce, in which their religious affiliation has never played a big part. India and UAE describe their relationship as a strategic partnership. A significant security component is now a part of India’s relationship with several Gulf countries, especially after ISIS burst on the scene in the region. With ISIS cells in the Gulf, intelligence co-operation with Saudi Arabia and the UAE is reported to have led to the deportation from these countries of dozens of individuals of interest between 2014 and 2017. India and Gulf countries such as UAE, Saudi and Oman carry out joint military exercises. In March, India and the UAE also signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, seen as a launching pad for a free trade agreement with GCC countries. That’s why the “boycottIndiangoods” hashtag that was trending on Sunday sent a wave of apprehension among those with stakes in businesses in the Gulf. One immediate implication could be for employment, said Ahmad. “India was seen as a role model of a democratic, pluralistic and accommodative nation that had also achieved considerable progress and technological achievement. That has been affected badly,” he said.
India’s diplomatic nightmare over controversial comments made by two senior officials of the country’s ruling party about the Prophet Muhammad is showing no signs of ending. More than 40 people were injured and over 1,500 people charged in connection with the violence. Countries in the Gulf region - Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain - and Iran have strongly condemned the remarks. Qatar and Bahrain also summoned the Indian envoy and expressed their disappointment. The two countries have, however, welcomed the BJP’s action against Ms Sharma. The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, or OIC, condemned her remarks, saying it came in a “context of intensifying hatred and abuse towards Islam in India and systematic practices against Muslims”. n response, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi “categorically rejected” OIC Secretariat’s unwarranted comments, calling them “narrow-minded”. The ministry also said that the government of India accords the “highest respect to all religions”.

‘Vote politics’: MEA slams US report on religious freedom in India HiIndia Newsdesk
India has strongly pushed back at criticism from the West that it is not doing enough to promote religious freedom and for failing to condemn the Russian aggression in Ukraine. The Ministry of External Affairs today accused Washington of playing “vote bank politics” after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said “in India we’ve seen rising attacks on people and places of worship”. The “vote bank politics” phrase was used in December last year by 22 retired Indian diplomats when they attacked Canadian PM Justine Trudeau for backing the farmers’ stir. “We would urge that assessments based on motivated inputs and biased views be avoided,” said MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi on the annual US report on international religious freedom released by Blinken. Trying to turn the tables on the US, he said: “In our discussions with the US, we have

regularly highlighted issues of concern there, including racially and ethnically motivated attacks, hate crimes and gun violence.” Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar exhorted Europe to grow out of the mindset that its problems alone are the world’s problems and countered
criticism on India buying Russian oil and banning wheat exports. Accused at the Bratislava Forum in Slovakia for funding the war by buying Russian oil, Jaishankar countered by asking, “Is it only Indian money that funds and not gas coming to Europe?’’ He pointed out that the West had squeezed alternative sources of oil from Iran and Venezuela, leaving countries with no option but to hunt for the best available deal in the market. The sixth round of western sanctions against Russia, he noted, had timelines and carve-outs in order not to unduly inconvenience its people. “If you are considerate to yourself, surely you can be considerate to other people,” he observed. He also said India did not need help in countering Chinese aggression.

Washington: A group of eminent Indian spiritual leaders have gathered in Los Angeles in the United States to hold a global peace dialogue aimed at resolving world conflicts through the age-old tradition of Indian cultural and moral values. Being organised by New Delhi-based Ahimsa Vishwa Bharati Foundation, the day-long Global Peace Dialogue at the Jain Centre of Southern California in Los Angeles on June 4 would be attended by Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravishankar, eminent Jain leader Acharya Lokesh Muni and film actor Vivek Oberoi, among others. “This is high time that we all work together to bring peace in the world. If that is the case, then we need to have peace dialogue from the very beginning to prevent any conflict or conflict-like situation in the world,” Muni, the brain behind this dialogue, said on Thursday on his arrival in Los Angeles from India.

How he wrote everything and he wrote on every emotion no matter what book you pick up there is something that you find relatable. Lataji’s songs are like that only, no matter any song you pick up, you will always find something that you can relate to, she has sung songs in every emotion you can think of. It’s a blessing we have her”. ”There is a lot you can learn from her songs. The spirituality that she has carried in her singing with utmost passion till the end, is truly a big learning. She used to sing complex songs with such ease that it is amazing. When you listen to the song it seems like it’s such an easy song but when you try singing it then you realize how difficult it is.

A college official said, “Yesterday, the girls created a lot of problems in the college by violating uniform rules multiple times despite the CDC and
High Court order directing them to wear uniforms. The teachers had a tough time convincing them and they were not ready to listen. Finally, the college principal consulted all the teachers and decided to keep the girls away from classes for four days. The CDC has clearly said that the hijab will not be allowed in classes and the corridor. If the girls still violate the rules, we have no choice but to take strict action.” As per the prospectus issued by the college, girls were earlier allowed to wear the uniform shawl as a headscarf.

CBP Completes Biometric Technology At All US Airports
HiIndia Newsdesk
WASHINGTON, DC– U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has announced that it has completed the expansion of biometric facial comparison technology at all international airports across the United States. The step has been taken to further secure and streamline
international travel. Simplified Arrival is an enhanced international arrival process that uses facial biometrics to automate the manual document checks that are already required for admission into the United States. This process provides travelers with a secure, more touchless travel experience while fulfilling a longstanding Congressional mandate to biometrically record the entry and exit of non-U.S. citizens. In addition, foreign travelers who have traveled to the United States previously may no longer need to provide fingerprints, as their identity will be confirmed through the touchless facial biometric process.

Hindus Urge Phnom Penh Brewery To Withdraw Lord Hanuman Beer And Apologize HiIndia Newsdesk
NEVADA- Upset Hindus are urging Phnom Penh (Cambodia) based Hanuman Beverages to apologize and withdraw beer named after Hindu deity Hanuman and carrying his image, calling it highly inappropriate. Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that inappropriate usage of sacred Hindu deities or concepts or symbols or icons for commercial or other agenda was not okay as it hurt the devotees. It was deeply trivializing of immensely venerated Hindu deity Lord Hanuman to be portrayed on a beer label, Rajan Zed emphasized. Hindus were for free artistic expression and speech as much as anybody else if not more. But faith was something sacred and attempts at trivializing it were insensitive, Rajan Zed added. CoHNA Expressed Strong Disappointment Regarding California Assembly’s Passage Of Bill AB2282 On Swastika HiIndia Newsdesk
BAY AREA, CA- The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) expressed its strong disappointment around California Assembly’s decision to pass Bill AB2282, titled “Hate crimes: nooses, crosses, and swastikas,” whose purpose is to criminalize the display of hate symbols. While the bill is well meaning, it perpetuates confusion by once again using false and hateful terms like “Nazi Swastika”, missing a historic opportunity to rectify a wrong done to the Buddhist, Hindu and Jain communities by faulty journalism and
scholarship in the years following World War 2. Further, the bill actually associates the sacred Swastika with hate and genocide by saying “…Nazi Hakenkreuz (hooked cross) [is] also known as the Nazi Swastika that was the official emblem of the Nazi party.” “In spite of claims that the bill has decriminalized Swastika, the amended language continues to use the word ‘Nazi Swastika’,” remarked CoHNA
president Nikunj Trivedi. “By passing this bill in its current form and failing to accommodate the concerns of Hindus, Buddhists and Jains in the language, the Assembly has essentially supported the false idea that there is a ‘good Swastika’ and a ‘bad Swastika.’” “The English translation has created numerous problems for the Dharmic communities, because in the the German language ‘Hakenkreuz’ literally means ‘hooked-cross,’ which is how Hitler and the Nazis referred to their symbol, not ‘Swastika,’” remarked Reverend Dr. T.K. Nakagaki, president of the Heiwa
Peace and Reconciliation Foundation of New York and president emeritus of the Buddhist Council of New York. “You can say Nazi Hakenkrez, Nazi hooked cross, Nazi hate symbol, but cannot call it ‘Nazi Swastika.’ The word ‘Swastika’ belongs to Dharmic traditions and is a particularly important symbol of peace and auspiciousness.” CoHNA has called upon the Hindu, Buddhist and Jain communities to reach out to their lawmakers and urge them to take the necessary steps to ensure that the bill is amended with appropriate references to the Nazi symbol of hate versus the sacred Swastika.

Singer KK’s Death Highlights the Importance of Emergency Medical Services
S
inger Krishnakumar Kunnath, a.k.a. KK, died on May 30, 2022, after a concert in Kolkata. He was visibly distressed during his performance, which happened at a hot, overcrowded venue that had glitchy air-conditioning and which invited allegations of mismanagement. We know that he was taken to his hotel by a private vehicle, and then to a hospital where doctors declared him dead following a cardiac arrest. The post mortem report indicated that KK had significant blockages in his heart vessels, which led to a heart attack. Some news reports also indicated that he had a history of chest pain. At the age of 53, his death was an untimely loss for his family and for fans of his music. This said, research has shown that one’s chance of survival would have been greatly improved if these conditions were in place. People with chest pain and other related symptoms who call an ambulance receive quicker, more appropriate treatment – and have a better survival rate. The amount of time between when the person first shows symptoms to when an angioplasty is performed in a
hospital is called the time-to-treatment period and it is clinically significant for most classic cases of heart attacks. Medical guidelines say this should be 90 minutes or less. An angioplasty opens the blocked blood vessels and restores circulation, allowing the heart to recover. A longer time-to-treatment is associated with greater heart muscle damage and death.
Women were less likely to be admitted to the hospital, they received less thorough evaluations and they were less likely to be administered tests like an electrocardiogram, or EKG, which can detect cardiac problems.
The essential elements of an emergency medical system (EMS) for cardiac patients are: ambulance operations, a call centre, and healthcare facilities. The most widespread emergency response model in India is the one you get when you dial 108, managed by the Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI), across multiple states.
The essential elements of an emergency medical system (EMS) for cardiac patients are: ambulance operations, a call centre, and healthcare facilities. EMRI began operations in Andhra Pradesh in 2005 with a fleet of 30 ambulances in 50 towns of the state. It is responsible for handling medical, police and fire emergencies through the 108 emergency service. Advanced cardiac life support’ (ACLS) ambulances are the enhanced versions of regular ambulances and provide services to people with cardiac problems and to those who need such care, such as adequate blood circulation and ventilation, during pre-hospital transport. The equipment on these ambulances should include advanced medical support, including intravenous supplies, cardiac monitors, intubation equipment and ventilators, along with a dedicated intensive care team to manage various conditions like cardiac arrest and stroke. Most ACLS ambulances appear to be available in the country’s urban centres.

God has gifted me pace and that’s bringing me the love of people around India: Umran Malik There was a banner declaring, ‘We have come to watch Umran Malik’. It was the first time a bowler introduced such crowds in. Umran, you’ve bought so many good needs and compliments this season. What has been your favorite praise?
I really feel proud after I play in the IPL and people are waving banners and singing my title. It provides me a lift and provides me the confidence to carry out higher. The help of the people has been immense and it has felt good to obtain.
What is it that’s so totally different about you and is bringing these crowds in?
God has gifted me with pace and that’s bringing me all the love of people around India. Inshallah, I proceed to obtain this love and I’ll proceed to present 120 per cent effort on the subject to get higher outcomes.
We have heard that docs in your hometown would have a subject day as a result of of the accidents brought on by your pace bowling?
(Laughs) It isn’t like that. When I used to play, I’d get damage myself. We used to play on grounds with stones on them and I’d repeatedly damage my toes. Chappals, footwear — one thing would all the time break.
When did Umran Malik realise he wished to be a quick bowler?
Sri Lanka Cricket on Monday said all income from tickets for the three Twenty20s, five one-day internationals and two Test matches would be donated to public welfare initiatives. “These are tough times for our people,” “We are indeed grateful to Cricket Australia and the Australian government for supporting this series despite the hardships we as a nation are facing.” The island nation is experiencing its worst economic crisis since independence in 1948, barreling toward bankruptcy and saddled with foreign debt so big that it has no money left for basic imports. Sri Lankans are struggling to access the bare necessities like food, fuel, medicine and cooking gas.

Kiara Advani Showed Us How To Ace Fusion Dressing
A
nything fusion has all of us desis in a chokehold. From our tryst with IndoChinese food to our armoire being loaded with a surcharge of fusion silhouettes, we love a good amalgamation of aesthetics. India’s colonial history has played a huge role here, all thanks to our folks’ incessant need to fit into the ‘posh circles’ at the time. While the origins of this trend may not be so humble, its evolution certainly is. Bollywood celebrities have hopped on this bandwagon and rightfully so, given the global stature of their fame.
Nikhat Zareen
Japanese man, 83, ready for more after crossing Pacific solo
Journey To Becoming A World Boxing Champion
“Take pride when they say you punch like a girl,” Nikhat Zareen writes in one of her Instagram captions. The 25-year-old boxer comes with an unwavering determination to punch above her weight and break stereotypes, one jab at a time. On 19th May 2022, Nikhat won against Thailand’s Jutamas Jitpong with a unanimous 5-0 verdict and brought home the gold medal in the 52-kilogram category at the World Women’s Boxing Championship in Istanbul.
J
apanese adventurer Kenichi Horie at 83 just became the oldest person in the world to complete a solo, nonstop voyage across the Pacific Ocean — and he says he is still “in the middle of my youth” and not done yet. On Sunday, after spending the night on his 19-foot-long, 990-kilogram Suntory Mermaid III just off the coast, Horie was towed into his home port of Shin Nishinomiya yacht harbour, where he was cheered by local residents and supporters, some holding banners that read: “Welcome back, Mr. Kenichi Horie!” As he approached the harbour, Horie, standing in his boat, took off his white cap and waved. Then he got off the boat, took off the cap again and bowed deeply on the pier before he was presented with bouquets of roses. “That shows how healthy I am,” Horie said. “I’m still in the middle of my youth.” He said he “burned all my body and soul” on the journey but says he’s ready for more.
Crispy Cheese Balls
How did you prepare for the Women’s World Boxing Championship? Could you take me through your daily workout routine and diet that you followed?
Nikhat Zareen (NZ): I took one step at a time. After coming back from the Strandja cup, I revisited my bouts on YouTube and learnt all my mistakes. I made sure to work on them in my training, prepare myself well for the world championship, and never repeat the same mistakes. We had our daily training session twice a day, 6 days a week. My diet plan was regulated by the dietitian provided to us by SAI. It was very beneficial as I had to keep my weight under control throughout the preparation and tournament days. If your biopic is made, who would you want to play you?
NZ: Alia Bhatt without a doubt! I feel we have some physical traits in common and I absolutely love her acting. It’s great to see the Indian film industry’s interest in the sport. Boxing movies like Mary Kom and Toofan have certainly sparked the younger generation’s interest to take up this sport and choose them as their idols— to fight like the heroes in the movies and fulfil their dreams.
And after thorough trendspotting, we’ve come to the conclusion that Kiara Advani emerges triumphant in dominating this trend. From promotional appearances for Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and Jugjugg Jeeyo, her sartorial choice of play is equally desi and videsi. Lakshmi Lehr, her stylist extraordinaire often opts for Indian heavy embroideries and prints on silhouettes with a global spin. Here, this sharara set by Ritika Mirchandani solidifies this very notion given the power shoulder cape and the plunging neck construction of the blouse.
