At the Bull Run Park in Centreville, a host of programs are lined up for August 15 including live performance by Sukhbir and celebrity guest Kajal Agarwal. Flag Hoisting with helicopter flower showers remains one of the most sought after events to look out for and the community is excited to see the celebrations. Closer home in Chicagoland, for the first time ever Maine Township, that houses a sizable number of Indian American population hosted an Indian Cultural Festival on August 3 to commemorate Indian Independence Day. About 300 people came out to show their support to the event and mark the day so close to Indian origin populations’ hearts. The event started with the singing of the national anthem and state senator and representatives from the area showed their appreciation for this wonderful start to celebrate Indian Independence Day in the township. A keynote speech by Asif Malik reflected the sentiment of thousands of Indians across America. Malik said in his speech: “Today we are celebrating Indian Independence Cultural Day here. This is the first time we are doing this kind of event. I hope and pray that our future generations carry on this tradition and continue to honor this day. I humbly request the community to support our programs. We are hardworking people who devote their energy towards the betterment of our communities here in the United States of America. I am proud to be part of this community. I am thanking all my supporters Including Maine Township Supervisor Karen J. Diamond and teams, God Bless America.” While various events will be held dotted across America to mark the day, those who are in New Jersey saw the celebrations at Jersey City on August 12. The event saw a flag raising ceremony at the City Hall at Grove Street. The City of Jersey City, Mayor Steven M. Fulop, the Jersey City Municipal Council, the Office of Cultural Affairs and the Indian Patriots of New Jersey presented the Independence Day of India’s Flag Raising at the event which was free and open to the public. Masks and

Covid protocols were followed at the event. Other events such as the one held by the Gujarati Samaj of NY on August 15 in Queens, New York is another awaited event by the local community. Gandhian Society and GOPIO will host Swaraj with Bapu and Vinobha at Albert Palace, Fords in NJ. The event on August 15 will also see a khadi fashion show by second generation Indian American kids. Towards the West Coast, at Sunnyvale, California, people will gather at Murphy Park on August 15 to a spectacular showcase of Indian culture. The event open to public will see cultural events, fancy shows, Indian food and everything that makes the Indian origin population in the US yearn for India. Another event in Mountain View, California, at Opal Event Center will see all forms of music including Bollywood, hip hop and much more. The event on August 14 requires a vaccination card for entry or a proof of negative Covid report. Across the United States, every Indian community will be commemorating the event in big and small ways. The Indian Independence Day celebrations celebrations which once began in America in major metro cities have not spread into smaller cities and counties. Across the East Coast, Mid-West and West Coast – people get together in big and small groups as local organizations celebrate the occasion. The energy and enthusiasm at the events is unparalleled and for many Americans it is a delight to see colors and confluence of culture right into their streets. It is for many like having a glimpse of India in their locality. This amalgamation of cultures and bringing back the memories from the homeland and owning it up in a grand spectacle is what makes India day a unique event to cherish and celebrate across the country. It also gives an opportunity to the younger Indian Americans and second and third generation of Indian origin population to know that while we may be far away from our homeland, we carry its spirit in our heart wherever we go.

Biden rules out any change in US plan to withdraw troops from Afghanistan

President Joe Biden has ruled out any change in the US plan to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan despite the Taliban increasingly gaining control over large swathes of the war-torn country, saying Afghan leaders need to come together and fight for themselves and their nation. President Biden in April ordered the withdrawal of all the US troops from Afghanistan by September 11 to end America’s longest war. The Pentagon’s massive task of removing service members and equipment out of Afghanistan is nearly complete and the US military mission is slated to end by August 31. “No,” Biden told reporters on Tuesday at the White House when asked if his current plan to withdraw troops could change at all.

Biden urges action on oil as petrol prices rise HiIndia Newsdesk The world’s top oil producers must do more to help quell rising fuel prices or it could threaten the global recovery, the White House has said. It said the price of oil was now higher than before the pandemic, leading to a spike in prices at the pump. Last month, members of the Opec cartel and allies agreed to boost supply to help stabilise the situation, adding 400,000 barrels a day to their output. But the White House said it was “simply not enough”. “President Biden has made it clear he wants Americans to have access to affordable and reliable energy, including at the pump.

“Look, we spent over a trillion dollars over 20 years. We trained and equipped over 300,000 Afghan forces. Afghan leaders have to come together. But they’ve got to want to fight. They have outnumbered the Taliban,” Biden said. As the US troops withdrew from Afghanistan, the Taliban has made stunning battlefield advances despite being vastly outnumbered by the Afghan military. Over the weekend, the Taliban seized five provincial Afghan capitals. Biden said the Afghans are beginning to realise they’ve got to come together politically at the top. HiIndia Newsdesk U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called out bullying in the South China Sea on Monday and warned the U.N. Security Council that a conflict “would

have serious global consequences for security and for commerce”, sparking a strong rebuke from China. The South China Sea has become one of many flashpoints in the testy relationship between China and the United States, with Washington rejecting what it calls unlawful territorial claims by Beijing in the resource-rich waters. “Conflict in the South China Sea, or in any ocean, would have serious global consequences for security, and for commerce,” Blinken told a Security Council meeting on maritime security. “When a state faces no consequences for ignoring these rules, it fuels greater impunity and instability everywhere.”

FDA expected to authorize Covid-19 vaccine booster shots for some immunocompromised people within the next 48 hours HiIndia Newsdesk

The US Food and Drug Administration is expected to announce within the next 48 hours that it is authorizing Covid-19 vaccine booster shots for some people who are immunocompromised, according to a source familiar with the discussions. This would be a third shot of the current two-dose Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. That announcement could slide, the source cautioned, but this is the current timing. “The FDA is closely monitoring data as it becomes available from studies administering an additional dose of the authorized COVID-19 vaccines to immunocompromised individuals,” an FDA spokesperson told CNN. “The agency, along with the CDC, is evaluating potential options on this issue, and will share information in the near future.” The FDA must give authorization for the vaccines to be used in new ways outside the existing authorization. All three Covid-19 vaccines being used in the US are given under emergency use authorization by the FDA, but

full approval is pending for Pfizer’s vaccine. After FDA grants approval or authorization, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention then advises on whether to actually use a vaccine as authorized by the FDA. Vaccine advisers for the CDC will meet on Friday to discuss booster doses of Covid-19 vaccines and additional doses for some immunocompromised people, according to a meeting agenda posted by the agency on Monday. A recent study by Johns Hopkins researchers found that vaccinated

immunocompromised people are 485 times more likely to end up in the hospital or die from Covid-19 compared to the general population that is vaccinated. Based on an estimate by the CDC, ab out 9 million Americans are immunocompromised, either because of diseases they have or medications they take. It has been known for months that Covid-19 vaccines might not work well for this group. The hope was that vaccination rates overall would be so high so that the “herd” would protect them. But it didn’t work out that way, because about a third of eligible people in the US have not received even one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine. The Biden administration is expected to lay out a Covid-19 vaccine booster strategy for all vaccinated Americans in September. US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy said Wednesday the administration is now considering who will need boosters most and when, and information on its efforts to protect immunocompromised people from Covid-19 is expected “very soon.”

The verdict will test a strained relationship between the Canadian and Chinese governments. It comes as an extradition battle involving Meng Wanzhou, a senior executive at Chinese tech giant Huawei, takes place in Canada. Critics have accused China of treating both Spavor and Kovrig as political bargaining chips, held as part of what is known as “hostage diplomacy”. In a statement published on Wednesday, the Dandong court said: “For the crime of spying and illegal provision of state secrets abroad [Spavor] has been sentenced to 11 years in jail, confiscation of 50,000 yuan ($7,715: £5,578) worth of personal property and deportation.”

UK universities to continue online lessons during autumn term

HiIndia Newsdesk London,: Many of the top universities in the UK have refused to return to full face-to-face classes in the autumn, despite government advice that they can lift all Covid-19 restrictions, local media reported. According to The Sunday Times report, 20 of the leading 24 Russell Group universities said a proportion of undergraduate teaching will continue to be held online, which means they will offer blended learning to mix the online and face-to-face teaching for classes, seminars and lectures, reports Xinhua news agency. Meanwhile, two-thirds of the 65 universities polled by the Times Higher Education magazine confirmed that most lectures would remain online for

the coming academic year, but that they planned as much in-person teaching as possible. They said the decisions were driven by the risk of coronavirus spreading in large lecture classrooms, as well as the educational benefits of blended learning. Most universities said they would require students to wear masks on campuses. Some will also instruct students to socially distance. Students may also need to be double jabbed to attend concerts, discos or other social events. The decision has dismayed college students who coped with severe disruption last year. Students in Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool have launched petitions calling for a full return to “normality in terms of teaching” and demanding fee refunds.

HiIndia Newsdesk The monsoon session of Parliament was on Wednesday cut short by two days without a discussion on the Pegasus controversy and after a bill to privatise general insurance companies was passed in the Rajya Sabha behind a wall of marshals. NCP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sharad Pawar later told reporters: “In my 55 years of parliamentary career, I never saw the way the women MPs were attacked today (in the Rajya Sabha). More than 40 men and women were brought into the House from outside. It is painful. It is an attack on democracy.”

Reminder: The Congress party fought for our nation’s independence, equipped only with truth, non-violence & the will of the people. We won then, we’ll win again,” the Congress declared in the Instagram post. This comes close on the heels of the temporary suspension of Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter account after a complaint from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) about a tweet that showed Mr Gandhi interacting with the family of the nine-year-old Dalit girl who was allegedly raped and killed in Delhi last week. he NCPCR had directed Twitter to act against the Congress leader’s account for violating the privacy of a minor, as mandated by the laws of the land. After Mr Gandhi’s account was temporarily suspended, the Congress late Wednesday claimed that similar action was taken against the handles of five senior leaders, including media head Randeep Surjewala.

Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy had recently conducted an aerial survey of the Polavaram project and later held a highlevel meeting to review the ongoing works, including rehabilitation and resettlement as well as spillway.

Idol makers hope for turnaround

The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to increase the compensation to some families displaced by the Polavaram dam project from Rs 6.86 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. The Irrigation (Water Resources) Department has set aside Rs 550 crores to give the additional compensation to the families who are displaced from settlements and habitations in Chinturu mandal in East Godavari district. The government decided to give the additional compensation after a survey was undertaken in the project-affected areas to find out the living conditions of the affected families. Over 1 lakh families have been displaced by the project — many of whom are living in rehabilitation colonies — and around 17,100 families will benefit from the government’s decision to increase the compensation. Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy had recently conducted an aerial survey of the Polavaram project and later held a high-level meeting to review the

ongoing works, including rehabilitation and resettlement as well as spillway. Officials said that works related to the spillway are almost complete and 42 out of 48 gates were already fixed and the remaining gates will be fixed soon. The government is also hastening up shifting of the newly displaced families to rehabilitation colonies as water level in the Godavari is rising. At least 10,000 families, including 5,000 tribal families, are being moved to rehabilitation colonies by August end, Irrigation (Water Resources) Minister Anil Kumar Yadav said. Jagan will visit the rehabilitation and resettlement colonies next month, and instructed the officials to focus on employment and skill development to Polavaram project evacuees. Officials said that they want to complete most of the construction before the monsoon flood in Godavari which will stop all activity, as flood waters will recede only after November or December.

HiIndia Newsdesk Hyderabad: Every year, thousands of people visit the narrow lanes of Dhoolpet around this time. Several colourful Ganesha idols of different shapes, sizes and makes - for pandals and homes - are lined up outside almost every house just before the eleven-day Vinayaka Chaturthi festivities. However, after a lean season last year due to the pandemic, and the lingering fear of a third wave now, the hustle-bustle is missing from this neighbourhood which houses not only Hyderabad-based idol makers, but many migrant labourers as well. While the earnings from this one season are enough for most to sustain them for the whole year, no business last year has thrown several people into debts. A young idol maker, Pawan Singh, who has already started working on making the idols, says, “Ours is a seasonal business. Apart from Ganesha festival and Navratri, we hardly get any work. Most of us take loans, get the material and then make the idols. After the festival, we have to pay back our loans.” Most of the artisans here had taken some loans last year that are still pending. “We also have to pay for a few of our workers. If this season doesn’t go well, a lot of us will have to face a severe financial crisis,” he says.

The opening ceremony of the Berlin Olympics was one of the great set-pieces of the Nazi era. As the giant zeppelin, the Hindenberg, circled majestically over the stadium, Hitler and his minister of interior arrived amid great fanfare to observe a military guard of honour. M.N. Masood noted the fervour that the Führer generated: ‘When the Führer neared the Stadium, a multitude of young boys who were watching the proceedings from outside, saw their idol approaching towards them. The vast crowd rose as one man as the Indians made raid after raid, completely outwitting the home defence with their speed and stickwork and their uncanny accuracy of shooting. Goal after goal was scored to the bewilderment of the German side and though they played with their greatest pluck and gameness and managed to score once, they were a well-beaten team.’ It was in this game that Dhyan Chand truly came into his own in the Berlin Olympics. Dhyan Chand had discarded his stockings and spiked shoes and wore rubber sole shoes, which increased his speed a great deal. That he was at his best is borne out by the handsome scoreline of 8–1. Dhyan Chand himself scored six goals. The German papers, which until then had been predicting a German gold, were full of praise for the Indians after the final. A correspondent for the Morning Post argued that Berlin would remember the Indian hockey team for long. ‘These players, it is said, glided over turf as if it is a skating rink and their flickering sticks had the Japanese, normally so agile, mesmerised.’ The reporter went on to conclude, ‘Nature seems to have endowed Indians with a special aptitude for hockey’. The legend of Indian hockey and the Games’ special affinity with what was still seen as the ‘Orient’ was embellished further. It is a tenet of Indian sporting folklore that Hitler personally met Dhyan Chand and offered him an officer’s commission in the Wehrmacht if he would play for Germany. This story is almost certainly apocryphal because none of the contemporary sources mention this incident and neither does Dhyan Chand in his autobiography…

Indian Canadian Truck Driver Released, Says He is a Victim of Marijuana Fraud

Houston Police Dept.’s Young Cadets gets an Introduction to Hinduism

HiIndia Newsdesk DETROIT, MI – Federal prosecutors have dropped charges, at least for now, against a Canadian trucker who was arrested at the U.S. border early last month with more than a ton of marijuana in his rig, after his lawyer made the case that he was an unwitting victim of the drug smuggling scheme. Tasbir Singh, 32, was detained on July 7 after border agents in Detroit found more than 2,200 pounds (998 kilograms) of marijuana worth an estimated $3.2 million in his truck. Singh told authorities that he believed he had picked up compression springs in North York, Ontario. The delivery was supposed to go to Ohio. Because of COVID-19 rules, he never got out of his truck while it was being loaded, his attorney Ellen Michaels said. “I had not done anything wrong,” Singh told the Detroit Free Press. Michaels said Singh was the victim of marijuana dealers who hacked into the trucking company’s computers, created a fake order for springs, and packed the trailer with marijuana. “He had no knowledge of what was in his truck,” Michaels said. The U.S. attorney’s office filed a request with the court on July 22 to have the criminal complaint against Singh dismissed without prejudice, meaning prosecutors could refile the charges at a later date. “The complaint was dismissed and the defendant released in order to allow the government to investigate further and decide whether criminal prosecution of Singh is appropriate,” Gina Balaya, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, said in a statement earlier this week.

HOUSTON, TX- On a warm sunny afternoon of 23rd July, about 60 young cadets of the Houston Police Department (HPD) were introduced to the core principles of Hinduism through a series of presentations and lectures at Vallabh Priti Seva Samaj.(VPSS) As the Greater Houston area is one of the most culturally diverse communities in the US, it was a much-needed introduction to the Hindu faith and a huge step forward to help understand and support the members of the community they serve. This unique engagement with the HPD was initiated by the Hindus of

Greater Houston (HGH). HGH Director Manisha Gandhi led the initiative with the keen involvement of Senior HPD Officer Danish Hussain. After welcoming the cadets and inviting the distinguished guests to the dais, VPSS Trustee and HGH Advisor Rasesh Dalal kicked off the day’s proceedings with a presentation that covered many aspects of Hinduism including the customs and rationale behind each of those customs. Observing the fact that Hinduism is better defined “as a way of life than a religion,” Rasesh also explained the Hindu philosophy of karma – one’s life being an eternal circle with good deeds in the current life that lead to a better rebirth in the next life. He also highlighted how Hindus receive and treat guests at home; how people respect the premises by leaving the shoes outside the home before entering and the practice of wearing gold jewelry on social and religious occasions. The essence of Hinduism, he added, is the same of all true religions – Bhakti and genuine compassion for all beings.

Super seven who gave the country its most successful Olympic campaign

773.526.8353 MIDWEST / EASTCOAST

Medal #6: Bajrang Punia Bronze, men’s 65 kg wrestling

With seven medals – one gold, two silver, four bronze – Tokyo 2020 has been the most decorated Olympic Games in India’s history. Here’s the story of the seven stars who scripted the success. For the first time ever, India won a medal on day one of an Olympic Games. It came from Saikhom Mirabai Chanu – who scripted a remarkable redemption from Rio 2016. Five years ago, on her Olympic debut, Mirabai stepped up for her last attempt (a 106 kg clean and jerk lift) with a bronze medal in sight – but couldn’t complete what was a regulation lift for her. The journey towards mending a broken dream – and heart – began right away. Before the end of 2017, she was a world champion; one year later, she was a Commonwealth Games gold medallist. Having established herself as one of the world’s top-five weightlifters in her 49 kg category, Mirabai entered Tokyo 2020 ranked third in the world, and as a genuine medal contender. She didn’t disappoint. With an 87 kg lift in the snatch, and a 115 kg lift in the clean and jerk, she made the silver medal hers – bettered only by HOU Zhihui of the People’s Republic China, who went on an Olympic recordsmashing run in the final.

Medal #2: PV Sindhu

Bronze, women’s singles badminton

Medal #3: Lovlina Borgohain Bronze, women’s welterweight boxing

Lovlina Borgohain wasn’t the most spoken about name in the nine-member Indian boxing contingent that made the trip to Tokyo. Given the presence of the legendary MC Mary Kom, that wasn’t a huge surprise. But the 23-year-old welterweight boxer wasn’t short on credentials: she had medalled at the last two world championships, as well as at two Asian championships, including the most recent edition earlier this year. At Tokyo 2020, she would emulate her and her country’s icon – joining Mary Kom as India’s second female boxer to win an Olympic medal. Borgohain earned her medal by defeating 2018 world champion Chen Nien-Chin in the quarterfinals, prevailing 4-1 on points against the pugilist from Chinese Taipei. Her bid to become India’s first Olympic finallist in boxing was only denied by 2019 world champion and eventual gold medallist Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey.

Medal #4: Men’s Hockey Team

PV Sindhu’s bid to better, or match, her Rio 2016 silver was halted by eventual Bronze silver medallist Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei in the semifinals. But that did not stop India’s serial winner from adding a historic second Olympic medal to her burgeoning trophy cabinet. Shunning the disappointment of the defeat from 24 hours earlier, Sindhu secured the bronze medal with a 21-13, 21-15 win against HE Bing Jiao of the People’s Republic of China. It gave her the distinction of becoming A long wait. A huge weight. the only Indian female athlete to win When India last won an Olympic medal multiple Olympic medals, and only the in hockey, no member of their present second Indian – female or male – to team had been born, and their coach medal twice in individual events at the – Australian Graham Reid – was yet to Olympic Games. Sindhu also became begin his playing career. only the fifth female shuttler to win two The most successful nation in the history Olympic singles medals. The 26-year- of the Olympic hockey competition had old has now won a combined seven waited 41 years for a medal in the sport. medals at the Olympics and the world The wait ended in sensational style. After being defeated 5-2 by eventual championships since 2013.

champions Belgium in the semifinals, India’s medal hopes rested upon their bronze playoff against Germany. At 3-1 down with half-time approaching, the medal appeared to be eluding India again. Four goals in the span of seven minutes, either side of the half-time hooter, and the dream was back on. The Germans – medallists at each of the last four editions of the Olympic Games – pulled one back at 5-4, and won a penalty corner with less than seven seconds left on the clock. But goalkeeper PR Sreejesh stood his ground to deny an equaliser – and India had their 12th Olympic medal in men’s hockey.

Medal #5: Ravi Kumar Dahiya

Silver, men’s 57 kg wrestling

It didn’t stop at one for the wrestling contingent, as Bajrang Punia – named after the patron deity of ‘kushti’ in India – got himself a piece of the prize from the mat. As the only Indian wrestler with three world championship medals to his name, Bajrang was a prime contender to be among the medals in Tokyo. But it was far from an easy ride. After scraping through his first two contests, Bajrang was halted in his tracks by Azerbaijan’s Haji Aliyev in the semis. A Rio 2016 bronze medallist in the 57 kg event, Aliyev overpowered the Indian second seed 12-5. That set Bajrang up for a bronze medal match against Daulet Niyazbekov, the Kazakhstan grappler who he had lost to in the 2019 world championship semifinals. Far from showing any of the lingering signs of worry from the first day of competition, the 27-year-old was at his dominant best in an 8-0 victory that delivered India its sixth wrestling medal at the Olympics since 2008.

Medal #7: Neeraj Chopra Gold, men’s javelin throw

Speaking of dramatic turnarounds in medal-clinching contests… With 90 seconds left to play in his semifinal clash with Nurislam Sanayev, Ravi Kumar Dahiya trailed 2-9. The Kazakh grappler, a medallist at the last two world championships, had the Indian right where we wanted him, on the mat. Or so he thought. Dahiya – a bronze medallist himself at the 2019 world championships, in addition to holding the two latest Asian championship crowns – closed the gap to 5-9, and then turned things around – literally – to pin Sanayev and book himself a spot in the final. The final, against two-time world champion Zavur Uguev (ROC) proved a bridge too far. But on his Olympic debut, Dahiya had become only the second Indian wrestler to win an Olympic silver medal. He had also maintained Indian wrestling’s proud run of bringing back at least one medal from every Olympic Games since 2008.

Medal number seven at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 was seventh heaven for India. Neeraj Chopra hurled the javelin into the sky – and it sent a nation to the moon, as India won an athletics gold medal at the Olympics for the first time. The 23-year-old had needed barely a minute on his maiden Olympic outing to secure a spot in the final – which, in itself, was a first for India in this event – as he topped the qualification stage with his first throw of 86.65m. In the final, Chopra was expected to be the closest challenger to the worldleading Johannes Vetter. Chopra’s first attempt in the final was marked at 87.03m, and his second flew 87.58m long. It comfortably cleared the rest of the field; his 87.03m attempt would have claimed silver on the day, as second-placed Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic landed a best throw of 86.67m. It gave India only its second individual Olympic champion after Abhinav Bindra (2008, men’s air rifle 10m), and also ended a 121-year wait for an Olympic medal of any colour in athletics.

Freedom at midnight 5 key turning points in India’s struggle for independence

Gandhi, sought swaraj or selfgovernment for all Indians. Closely tied to Gandhi’s ideas of satyagraha and organised civil disobedience, it envisaged Indians boycotting all institutions of the Raj like colleges and courts, giving up their titles and refusing to pay taxes. Though it didn’t meet all its objectives, it generated a wave of excitement among vast sections of Indians, who for the first time realised what a modern political movement looked like.

Dandi March:

Another masterstroke by Mahatma Gandhi, he embarked on the historic In December 1884, British civil servant Allan Octavian Hume presided over a private meeting with 17 other men in Madras. This meeting was the genesis of the Indian National Congress (INC). When it was finally founded on 28 December 1885, the INC’s primary objective was to be a forum where educated Indians could pursue a political dialogue with the British government. From this rather limited scope, it gradually turned into a mass movement and the party of the freedom movement which spawned a galaxy of leaders including Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, and India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

march from Gujarat’s Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi, a coastal village in the state, on 12 March 1930 to protest the unreasonably steep tax levied on salt – the most basic of commodities – by the British. But the Salt March or the Dandi March as it came to be known was much more than just opposition to the salt tax. As tens of thousands of people joined Gandhi on the 24-day march, it transformed into one of the largest civil disobedience movements the world had known. From then on, mass resistance against the colonial rule became a permanent affair.

Jallianwala Bagh massacre:

The Azad Hind Fauj:

The slaughter of innocent Indian men, women and children at Jallianwala Bagh in Punjab shocked the country and exposed the British raj for what it really was – a brutal occupying power with little regard for the lives of the people it ruled. There was already growing resentment against the British rule after World War 1, with the imperial power unwilling to devolve powers to Indians. In April 1919, Punjab was gripped by unrest, and the authorities banned public gatherings. Brigadier General REH Dyer was among those tasked with restoring order. On April 13, he ordered his men to fire on a gathering of around 10,000 civilians who had gathered at Amritsar’s Jallianwala Bagh. The death toll is disputed but it went into the several hundreds and according to some estimates, nearly 2,000 people perished. The act by Dyer caused widespread revulsion, and convinced many Indians that the British rule must end.

Non-Cooperation movement:

The Non-Cooperation movement (1920-22), one of the first mass movements launched by Mahatma

India’s fight for freedom which culminated in independence for oneseventh of the human race on 15 August 1947 was a very long and arduous struggle lasting several decades. It had many salient features which made it quite remarkable when compared to freedom movements in other parts of the world. The key among these was that it was largely peaceful. Though a small section of Indian revolutionaries believed that an armed struggle was the only way of defeating the British, for the most part Indian freedom-fighters followed Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of nonviolent resistance against the mighty British empire. The freedom movement picked up pace after Gandhi’s return from South Africa, where he had created a huge impression on South Africans of all colours as an activist and lawyer. So the period from the latter half of World War 1 onwards was really when the Indian freedom struggle took concrete shape, while building on the nationalist currents and enormous work done by Indian leaders till then.

One of the most inspiring figures of the Indian freedom movement, Subhas Chandra Bose is best known as the man who took the fight to the British by leading the Azad Hind Fauj or the Indian National Army (INA) which was founded in 1942. Bose and his brave men joined hands with the Japanese to oust the British. Though historians are divided over the military impact the INA had on the ground, there is little doubt that Britain saw the writing on the wall, especially when the 1945 trials of captured members of INA – known as the Red Fort trials – turned the popular mood decisively against the government. By the middle of 1946, the British had realised that discontent was brewing among Indian soldiers, and complete independence could no longer be delayed or denied.

Threat to Human Rights, Bodily Integrity Highest at Police Stations: CJI Ramana

Asserting that human rights and dignity are “sancrosanct,” Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana, on Sunday, 8 August, raised concerns regarding custodial torture and violations of human rights at police stations. Delivering the keynote address at an event organised by the National Legal Services Authority of India (NALSA), CJI Ramana said: “The threat to human rights and bodily integrity are the highest in police stations. Custodial torture and other police atrocities are problems that still prevail in our society.” The CJI obser ved that while there are Constitutional safeguards in place, the lack of legal representation at police stations furthers the peril experienced by arrested persons. “Going by the recent reports even the privileged are not spared third-degree treatment,” he said,

Women’s Safety

Are women in India free? Free to wear clothes of their choice, free to go out in the night, free to choose their partners? When cases of stalking, cyber bullying, abduction repeatedly make news, can we deny that we have failed miserably in creating a gender-just society? Many crimes against women do not even get reported because of the social stigma attached to them. Women endure eve-teasing, sly remarks and even sexual harassment, often at the cost of their dignity. In Delhi alone, there are six rapes on an average daily, according to Delhi police data. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, a total of 34,651 rape cases were reported in India in 2015. And this is recorded data.

According to a government report, the dropout rate at the secondary school level in India is more than 17%

COVID-19 put 1.6 billion children out of school

52.1% of rural india defecates in the opem

Poor sanitation exposes more than 60,000 children to preventable diarrhoeal diseases annually. Often, women have to walk to great distance and wait until dark to defecate. This makes them susceptible to molestation and violence. Besides, the lack of toilets in public and private spaces makes maintaining menstrual hygiene a real menace – forcing girls to drop out of school early on. Good sanitation is the foundation of a robust public health system. It is a right that should be accessible to everyone, all the time.

Seventy five years of independence and we haven’t been able to send all our children to school. Poor studentteacher ratio, crumbling infrastructure, lack of toilets have a fair role to play in keeping children away from school. Couple this with socio-economic factors such as abject poverty, access, child labour, child marriage and you know much is amiss. Yet not much is being done to make elementary education a reality in India. Earlier in the year, the Union Budget left several educationists disappointed for inadequate attention to the primary education sector. A mere rise of 4.4% in the allocation of funds to the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan does little in a country like ours with disproportionate demand-supply ratio. The Right to Education (RTE) Act is still overtly flouted despite entering its seventh year of implementation.

Junaid, Mohammad Akhlaq, Pehlu Khan, Ayub Pandit are eerie reminders of the mad frenzy of communal violence gripping India. As one act of violence supersedes the other, it unleashes an atmosphere of fear, pain and anguish. Today it is them, tomorrow it could be you. Secularism is the backbone of our democracy. It must thrive no matter what.

Supreme Court Fines 8 Parties for Not Publishing Candidates’ Criminal Records Before Bihar Polls

The court said that no one can deny that the menace of criminalisation in the Indian political system is growing day by day. New Delhi: In an unprecedented order to check criminalisation of politics, the Supreme Court on Tuesday held nine political parties including the ruling BJP and JD(U) in Bihar guilty of contempt and fined eight of them for violating its February, 2020 order on publication of criminal antecedents of their candidates for the assembly polls. The bench, also comprising Justice B.R. Gavai, imposed a fine of Rs five lakh each on the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), saying they have not at all complied with the directions issued by this court. It imposed a fine of Rs one lakh each on the Janata Dal-United (JD-U), the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), INC, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) and asked them to deposit the money within eight weeks with the poll panel. The Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP) was spared of the fine. The top court also modified its earlier order to make it clear that political parties must publish the criminal antecedents of their candidates, if any, within 48 hours of their selection, as it lamented the apathy of the government’s legislative wing in not taking steps to decriminalise the political system and that political parties refuse to wake up from “deep slumber”. Maintaining that persons with criminal antecedents and involved in criminalisation of politics cannot be permitted to be law-makers, the apex court said it can only appeal to the conscience of lawmakers and hope they will wake up soon and carry out a major surgery for weeding out the malignancy of criminalisation in politics. “The nation continues to wait, and is losing patience. Cleansing the polluted stream of politics is obviously not one of the immediate pressing concerns of the legislative branch of government,” a bench headed by Justice R.F. Nariman said in its 71-page verdict on a plea seeking contempt action against several political parties including the BJP and the Indian National Congress(INC) for non-compliance of its February 13, 2020 directions during the Bihar assembly polls. The contempt plea was filed by Brajesh Singh, a lawyer from Bihar. Highlighting the separation of power, the verdict noted that the top court has been appealing time and again to
