Yes, there’s something masochistically satisfying about limping your way down a flight of stairs the morning after a big legs workout, but delayed onset muscle soreness – Doms to its Insta-buddies – isn’t actually a convincing indicator of progress. It’s thought to be caused by micro-tears in muscle, and tends to crop up when you do movements you’re not used to, when you deliberately slow down the “eccentric” (or musclelengthening) part of whatever move you’re doing (such as the downward bit of a squat) or just do a ridiculous number of reps. Conversely, then, you can eliminate soreness almost entirely by keeping the reps low, or doing moves that don’t have an eccentric, such as throws and sled pushes. There is such a thing as painfree progress.
Machines Are Pointless (Or Dangerous)
Lifting Heavy Will Make You Bulky
There are two key ways to get stronger: increasing the size of your individual muscle fibres, and recruiting more of them to fire together when you need to use them. The first is what bodybuilders aim to do, but the second is what your body would do – automatically – if you had to lift a car off a loved one. In sports where excess size is a negative, it is what competitors teach themselves to do. This is how female Olympic weightlifters in the lighter weight categories can outlift TV targeted actor Divya Bhatnagar passed away larger men. The Cross-Trainer Is the Best Full-Body Cardio Machine
Let’s be honest: you’ve never seen Britain’s greatest living Olympian, Sir Steve Redgrave™, dry-heaving over the side of a cross-trainer. “It may be intuitive and burn some calories, but that’s all this outdated relic offers,” says Dr Cameron Nichol, the founder of RowingWOD. “When done correctly, the rowing machine uses 86 percent of your muscles spanning nine major muscle groups.” The rower also works with the time you have – if you need a short, horrible finisher, a 500-metre sprint will leave you sucking air and burning fat, while a more ponderous 10k feels almost meditative and the Olympic-length 2k is a test of will as much as power.

Biggest Myths in Fitness
As sparse-and-spartan gym spaces emphasising basic barbell movements have proliferated, so, too, has the idea that using machines to train is at best inefficient, at worst dangerous. Machines force your body into awkward, over-linear movement patterns, goes the theory – reducing the input from important stabiliser muscles and stopping you from moving naturally. But while there is some truth to this, not every machine is the enemy. “Whether you’re a time-poor, technique-free novice or a more advanced lifter, machines can involve less setup, allow more work and provide extra stimulus to isolated muscle groups,” says the trainer Dan Osman. That said, the leg press is no substitute for learning to squat properly.

How much vitamin B12 do we need and what's the best way to get it?
TO TALK, END STIR feel-good hormones, giving credence to the adage, "fake it til you make it" when it comes to your state of mind. Smiling is also a predictor of longevity. In a 2010 out of Wayne State University, researchers looked at Major League baseball card photos from 1952. They found that the span of a player's smile actually predicted his lifespan -- unsmiling players lived 72.9 years on average, while beaming players lived a full seven years longer. Similarly, a 30-year longitudinal study out of UC Berkeley examined the smiles of students in an old yearbook, with almost spooky results. The width of students' smiles turned out to be accurate predictors of how high their standardized tests of well-being and general happiness would be, how inspiring others would find them, even how fulfilling their marriages would end up. Those with the biggest smiles came up on top in all the rankings. Finally, research demonstrates that when we smile, we look better to others. Not only are we perceived as more likable and courteous, but those who benefit from our sunny grins actually see us as more competent.
What are the health benefits of vitamin B12?
“Vitamin B12 is essential for proper neurological and metabolic functioning, including the transport of oxygen in our bodies,” Whitney English, a registered dietitian based in Los Angeles, told. “B12 is used to make red blood cells, which carry oxygen in the body. What else are B12 vitamins good for? Vitamin B12 is also a ‘co-factor’ in DNA synthesis. Finally, B12 is required to make myelin, the protective layer that coats nerve cells.” Our bodies need vitamin B12, but they don’t make it on their own. You can get more of this nutrient in your diet by eating vitamin B12 foods like: * Nutritional yeast * Eggs * Cheese * Milk * Yogurt * Fortified non-dairy milks * Fortified breakfast cereals * Beef, liver and chicken * Fish, such as canned tuna, sockeye salmon and rainbow trout * Clams. The recommended daily allowance of vitamin B12 for adults isn’t much — 2.4 mcg, according to the NIH.
“We are against the three laws. We will block railway tracks if the prime minister doesn’t listen to us,” said boota singh, chairperson, bku (dakaunda), which is part of the stir. What is vitamin B12?
This essential nutrient works to preserve the health of your nerve and blood cells, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Vitamin B12 also helps make DNA, the genetic material in all cells, and helps to prevent a type of anemia called megaloblastic anemia that makes people tired and weak.

Biden hails Austin as Pentagon pick, nods to worry about waiver
Austin, 67, was the first Black general to command US forces in the Middle East and, if confirmed, would break another barrier as the first Black leader of the Defense Department.
HiIndia Newsdesk Medical experts advising the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have recommended emergency approval for the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine. The decision comes after a 23-member panel met to determine whether the drug's benefits outweigh the risks. The Pfizer vaccine has already been approved for the public in the UK, Canada, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. The drug still needs to be formally approved by the FDA's vaccine chief, which is expected in the coming days.
Joe Biden son faces tax probe
HiIndia Newsdesk The justice department is investigating the tax affairs of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr’s son Hunter, he disclosed in a statement on Wednesday. The investigation is being led by the US attorney’s office in Delaware. It was opened in late 2018 and has included inquiries into potential criminal violations of tax and money laundering laws, according to people familiar with the inquiry. The money laundering aspect of the case failed to gain traction after FBI agents were unable to gather enough evidence for a prosecution, the people said.
First execution of Trump's final days goes ahead
HiIndia Newsdesk The federal execution of a death row inmate went ahead on Thursday, the first of five before the end of Donald Trump's presidency. Kim Kardashian West was among those urging clemency for Brandon Bernard. Bernard, 40, was convicted of murder when aged 18 and is the youngest offender to be executed by the federal government in nearly 70 years. If all five take place, Mr Trump will have overseen the most executions by a US president in more than a century. It would bring to 13 the total of federal executions since July. The executions break with an 130-yearold precedent of pausing executions amid a presidential transition. Joe Biden becomes president on 20 January.
HiIndia Newsdesk President-elect Joe Biden introduced retired Army General Lloyd Austin as his pick for defense secretary and urged lawmakers to grant him a waiver to take the role despite his recent military
service. “In my judgment, there’s no question that he is the right person for this job at the right moment,” Biden said of Austin, who would be the first African American to lead the Pentagon. “He’s led major coalitions of allies and partners to fight terrorism, and it took some real diplomatic capacity to get that done.” Biden took note of the waiver from Congress Austin will need to assume the role of Defense secretary because it has been fewer than seven years since he retired from the military. Democrats and Republicans in Congress have expressed reluctance at doing so for Austin, even though they granted one for Jim Mattis when he was named President Donald Trump’s first defense secretary. “There’s a good reason for that law that I understand and respect,” he said. “I believe in the importance of civilian control of the military.”
US death toll surpasses World Casey Goodson: Family demand answers after police shooting War II combat fatalities
HiIndia Newsdesk The U.S. death toll from COVID-19 surpassed the number of World War II combat fatalities on Thursday night, just hours after a committee of leading U.S. vaccine scientists recommended the Food and Drug Administration authorize the first COVID-19 vaccine for Americans. "We are in the timeframe now that probably for the next 60 to 90 days we're going to have more deaths per day than we had at 9/11 or we had at Pearl Harbor," Redfield Redfield said during at an event hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations, The Hill reported.
Trump hosts Hanukkah events as Covid-19 deaths soar HiIndia Newsdesk US President Donald Trump has hosted two Hanukkah events at the White House, defying Covid advice again. Wednesday's gatherings occurred on the day 3,053 died, according to a tally by the Covid Tracking Project - a new daily record in the country. Video on social media shows Mr Trump at one of the parties with the sound of one person coughing in the background. The president has consistently ignored official advice, despite contracting Covid-19 himself. According to the Times of Israel, more than 100 people attended each of the events, which were held to mark the Jewish holiday. Among those in attendance was White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, who tested positive for coronavirus last month. Images on social media show him at one event without a face covering, shaking hands with other maskless guests. Mr Trump's Hanukkah parties were among the 25 indoor events planned at the White House over the holiday season. He has previously defended the events, saying many guests have worn masks "and I think that's a good thing".
The family of a black man fatally shot outside his Ohio home has demanded answers, claiming he was killed for being a "young black man". HiIndia Newsdesk Casey Goodson, 23, had just returned from the dentist when an officer, identified as deputy Jason Meade, shot him in the back, his family said. Columbus Police Department and the FBI has launched probes into the shooting. The Franklin County Sheriff 's Office would not comment on possible motives amid the open investigations. Mr Meade is "currently off-duty", sheriff 's office spokesman Marc Gofstein said. "He's not coming back to work or doing anything for the sheriff 's office and there's no timetable associated with it." A post-mortem examination this week has ruled Mr Goodson's 4 December death a homicide. Nearly one week after he was shot, the facts surrounding Mr Goodson's death remain in question.

Centre appeal to farmers
No ego, willing to talk, end stir
“We are against the three laws. We will block railway tracks if the Prime Minister doesn’t listen to us,” said Boota Singh, chairperson, BKU (Dakaunda), which is part of the stir.
HiIndia Newsdesk A DAY after farmers’ representatives rejected the Government’s offer to amend its new agriculture laws in a bid to resolve the two-week-long faceoff with protesters camped at Delhi’s borders, the Centre Thursday issued a fresh call for farmers to end their agitation and join the next round of talks. Addressing a press conference, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said: “I would still urge the unions to find a way through discussions by withdrawing their next phase of agitation.”
The appeal from Tomar came after the Centre offered several concessions, including a written assurance on continuation of minimum support price (MSP)-based procurement and parity in transactions inside and outside Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) mandis. Having rejected the Centre’s proposals, the farm leaders reacted to the new appeal by saying that they will continue their protests for a repeal of the laws. “We are against the three laws. We will block railway tracks if the Prime Minister doesn’t listen to us,” said Boota Singh, chairperson, BKU (Dakaunda), which is part of the stir. Tomar, however, said
that “it is not appropriate to announce a further agitation… when the discussion is going on”. “Several rounds of talks have taken place. During the discussions, the Government identified some points to which they (farm unions) also agreed that these have come up during deliberations. We have given them the written proposal. If they think that the proposal lacks some of their points, then they should discuss. Even if they have any objection to the language of the proposal, they should discuss it. We are ready for discussions,” Tomar said.
Prime Minister extols Will be happy if Sharad Less than 30,000 India as the 'mother of Pawar sir becomes UPA fresh Covid cases, 414 democracy' chairperson: Sanjay Raut casualties in a day
HiIndia Newsdesk Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday cited rising vote percentages as proof of India’s thriving democracy as he laid the foundation for a new Parliament building, days after a Supreme Court rap on his government and a globally condemned crackdown on protesting farmers. “Today is a milestone in India’s democratic history,” Modi said after performing a “bhoomi pujan” (earth worship) guided by priests from the Sringeri Math in Karnataka.
HiIndia Newsdesk Adding fuel to speculations that Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar could succeed Sonia Gandhi as United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Friday said his party will be happy if the veteran NCP leader assumes the post and that he will support him if such a proposal comes his way officially. “We’ll be happy if Pawar sir becomes UPA chairman. But I’ve heard that he’s personally refused it. We will support him if such a proposal comes to the fore officially,” news agency ANI quoted him as saying. He added that since Congress is weak now, the opposition needs to come together and strengthen the UPA. However, the NCP on Thursday had rejected any possibility of Pawar helming UPA, terming such reports as “baseless media speculation”. NCP chief spokesperson Mahesh Tapase said there are unsubstantiated reports in the media regarding Pawar taking over as the chairperson of the UPA.
HiIndia Newsdesk India recorded less than 30,000 fresh Covid-19 infections on Friday, the second time this month, which pushed its caseload to 97.96 lakh, while the total number of recoveries surged to 92.90 lakh, according to the Union health ministry data. The total coronavirus cases mounted to 97,96,769 with 29,398 fresh infections, while the death toll rose to 1,42,186 with 414 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed. India had recorded a daily rise of 26,567 cases on December 8.

What’s behind the farmers’ protests that are blocking highways in India Hi India News Desk
T
ens of thousands of farmers in India have been blockading main highways around New Delhi for two weeks — part of a much wider two-month-long protest by farmers across the country. More than half of India’s workforce is involved in farming. While the sector once accounted for a third of India’s gross domestic product, it now accounts for only about 17 or 18 per cent of the country’s $2.9 trillion US economy, according to India’s Economic Survey 2017-2018. The farmers are angry about three agricultural reform laws the Indian government passed earlier this fall. The government says the new laws will make the sector more efficient, allowing farmers to market their produce and boost production through private investment. The farmers say they will deregulate crop prices and devastate their earnings.
When did the protests begin? Farmers have been protesting the laws for nearly two months in the northern states of Punjab and Haryana. The situation escalated two weeks ago when tens of thousands marched

to New Delhi, where they clashed with police and set up protest camps. They continued to block key highways this week, with protest leaders announcing a new blockade for this Saturday and a nationwide shutdown of businesses next Monday unless their demands are met. Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar told reporters that the government is willing to amend the new laws to allay the farmers’ concerns, and they “should give up their insistence on scrapping” them.
What are the key concerns?
The government of Narendra Modi enacted three agricultural reform laws in September. The reforms loosened rules around the sale, pricing and storage of farm produce that have protected farmers from an unfettered free market for decades. The government says the laws bring about necessary reform that will allow farmers to market their produce and boost production through private investment.
Farmers say they were never consulted. They fear the government will stop buying grain at minimum
Farmers’ Protests: Pro-Khalistan Outfit Threatens To Close Indian Embassies Across The World On December 10
Khalistan flag (Representational photo) New Delhi: US-headquartered pro-Khalistan outfit Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) has threatened to shut down consulates in various cities across the world in light of the farmers’ protests. The outfit has warned that it will close consulates in London, Birmingham, Frankfurt, Toronto, Washington Dc through tractor rallies in support of the farmers in Punjab. The announcement may be viewed on the backdrop of ongoing protests against farm laws in New Delhi. On Sunday, SFJ functionary Paramjit Singh Pamma was seen along with other supporters waving the Khaliastani flag during a pro-farmer rally in
London. According to a report in Times of India, the outfit was emboldened by the stance taken by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. While extending support to farmer protests, Trudeau had said - “Canada will always stand up for the right of peaceful protest and human rights”. India had condemned the comments and urged the Canadian government to refrain from indulging in India’s internal matters. “These comments have encouraged gatherings of extremist activities in front of our High Commission and Consulates in Canada that raise issues of safety and security. We expect the Canadian Government to ensure the fullest security of Indian diplomatic personnel and its political leaders to refrain from pronouncements that legitimize extremist activism,” the MEA had said. In a significant development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) charge-sheeted 16 people under the anti-terror law. These individuals are located in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada and according to the NIA charge sheet the individuals were involved in a conspiracy to create a campaign under the banner of ‘Referendum 2020’ for the creation of ‘Khalistan’. Three of the individuals - Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, Hardeep Singh Nijjar and Paramjit Singh have been listed as terrorists by the Home Ministry.
guaranteed prices and corporations will then push prices down. The government says it is willing to pledge that guaranteed prices will continue. They also say that in the absence of better infrastructure like climatecontrolled storage facilities, proper roads and reliable irrigation and power supply, removing middlemen will not be helpful to the farming sector. What kind of living do farmers currently makeAccording to a 2016 survey by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, a farmer in India earned about 9,000 rupees a month (about $155).
Why are many people in Canada watching this closely? Many people living in Canada come from or have family in the northern Indian states where farmers have been protesting, as well as own property there. This past weekend, hundreds of people gathered in front of the Indian consulate in downtown Toronto to show their support for the farmers in India. Car rallies have also been organized in cities like Vancouver, Calgary and Charlottetown to show solidarity.Last week, Trudeau voiced concern over the Indian government’s response to the protests. “We believe in the importance of dialogue and that’s why we’ve reached out through multiple means directly to the Indian authorities to highlight our concerns,” he said. That elicited anger from an Indian foreign ministry spokesperson, who called his comments “ill-informed.”Trudeau reiterated his support a few days later, saying “Canada will always stand up for the right of peaceful protest anywhere around the world and we’re pleased to see moves toward de-escalation and dialogue.”

No need for Covid caution notices: Supreme Court
HiIndia Newsdesk The SC on Wednesday ruled that the states and Union Territories are not under any obligation to display caution notices outside the homes of Covid-19 patients and any such directive can be issued only if there is specific directive from the Union government under the Management Act, 2005. Farmers on Wednesday unanimously rejected the amendments offered in writing by the Narendra Modi government to the three contentious farm laws, calling them “insincere” and an insult to cultivators. The farmers also do not see much merit in returning to the negotiating table without a substantial new offer. Amit Shah on Tuesday, the farmers have decided to intensify the agitation by blocking the Jaipur-Delhi highway till December 12 and targeting the businesses of the Ambanis and Adanis, arguing that these two corporate houses will be the biggest beneficiaries of the three new farm laws. Speaking for the first time since a crunch meeting in Brussels, the PM said "now is the time" for firms and people to prepare for a no deal outcome. Talks continue between the two sides, but Mr Johnson said they were "not yet there at all" in securing a deal. Time is running out to reach an agreement before the UK stops following EU trade rules on 31 December. Weeks of intensive talks between officials have failed to overcome obstacles in key areas, including competition rules and fishing rights.Mr Johnson met European Commission President Ursula von der

Mr Johnson pledged British negotiators, who earlier resumed talks with their EU counterparts in Brussels, would "go the extra mile" to reach a deal. But he said the EU wanted to keep the UK "locked" into its legal system, or face punishments such as taxes on imports, which had "made things much more difficult". The PM added that the EU's proposals would mean, despite leaving the bloc earlier this year, the UK would be forced to remain a "twin" of the 27-country organisation. France moves to night-time curfew from 15 December
France watchdog fines Google $121 million

France will delay the reopening of cultural venues and introduce a night-time curfew as it struggles to curb the spread of Covid-19. Prime Minister Jean Castex said the infection rates were not falling as fast as the government had hoped after a lockdown was imposed in late October. A stay-at-home order will be lifted as planned on 15 December, when the daily 20:00-06:00 curfew will begin. The measure will not be waived on New Year's Eve, to prevent big gatherings. The government had conditioned the easing of restrictions on the number of new cases falling to around 5,000 a day. But that number remains well above 10,000 - on Thursday, there were 13,750 infections. HiIndia Newsdesk France’s data privacy watchdog has handed out its biggest ever fine of 100 million euros ($121 million) to Alphabet’s Google for breaching the country’s rules on online advertising trackers (cookies). The CNIL said on Thursday it had also fined e-commerce giant Amazon 35 million euros for breaking the same rules. The regulator found the companies’ French websites didn’t seek the prior consent of visitors before advertising cookies — small pieces of data stored while navigating on the Web — were saved on computers, it said in a statement. Google and Amazon also failed to provide clear information to Internet users about how the firms intended to make use of such online trackers and how visitors to their French websites could refuse any use of the cookies, the watchdog said.
Covid-19: Virus ‘success’ Taiwan to keep restrictions despite vaccine
Authorities in Taiwan have warned that even as vaccinations begin, the world should remain extremely vigilant against the virus. Health minister Chen Shih-chung said scientific data on the vaccines' lasting effect
was still insufficient. "During the first vaccination periods, people should continue with the safety measures," he told . Taiwan has been one of the most successful places in the world in dealing with Covid-19.mSo far, the country has had only 724 confirmed cases and seven deaths and has never had to go into lockdown. The health minister does not question the vaccines' safety or whether they provide immunity but rather stresses that it was not clear to which extent and how long they would protect people. Taiwan's impressive success battling the coronavirus has been largely attributed to early and strict border controls, a ban on foreign visitors and mandatory quarantine for all Taiwanese returning home.

It could be used to transport inoculations to remote parts of Africa and Southeast Asia, he said. “We built this with the African market in mind,” said Marani. “This isn’t to move the vaccine from the factory to the local pharmacies or inner-city transport — this is for Africa and Southeast Asian countries where the logistics and supply chain takes a lot longer to get to a destination.”

Washington, December 8: Several US lawmakers and eminent members of the Sikh community in America have voiced their support for farmers agitating in India against the new farm laws and urged that they be allowed to protest peacefully. Thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana and several other states have been protesting on various borders of Delhi since November 26, seeking repealing of the three farm laws enacted in September. Dubbing these laws as "anti-farmer", these farmers claim that the newly enacted legislations would pave the way for the dismantling of the minimum support price system, leaving them at the "mercy" of big
corporates. However, the government has maintained that the new laws will bring farmers better opportunities and usher in new technologies in agriculture. "I stand in solidarity with the Punjab farmers in India protesting for their livelihoods and protection from misguided, manipulative government regulations,” Congressman Doug LaMalfa said on Monday. "Punjab farmers must be allowed to protest peacefully against their government without fear of violence," said the Republican lawmaker who represents Californian's first Congressional district.

Bucharest, Romania: A metal monolith which mysteriously appeared on a hilltop in northern Romania has sparked curiosity -- and mockery -- online, coming just days after a similar object was found in the Utah desert. Images of the four-metre tall metal object were first published last week by local news outlets in the Neamt region. The Jurnal FM radio station went to investigate the monolith after an email about it arrived on Thursday. "We were surprised to say the least when we found a... metallic structure which had spirals engraved on its sides", the station said in a story posted on its website. Local news outlet ziarpiatraneamt.ro also published a video taken by a man who went to the hilltop to see the object for himself.

"I'm so pleased we are hopefully coming towards the end of this pandemic and I am delighted to be doing my bit by having the vaccine, I feel it is my duty to do so and do whatever I can to help," said Mr Shukla. "Having been in contact with the NHS (National Health Service), I know how hard they all work and the greatest respect for them - they have a heart of gold and I am grateful for everything they have done to keep us safe during the pandemic," he said. Mr Shukla was notified by the NHS based on the criteria set by the UK's Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation as part of a phased rollout plan based on those at the highest risk of death from the deadly virus. People aged 80 and over, care home workers as well as NHS workers who are at higher risk will be first in line to receive the "life-saving jab". Snakebite: The silent farm killer slithering through India
Blurb: Between 45,900 and 52,000 people die every year in India because of snakebite, according to various studies. In a country where 62 of the 300 species of snakes have been found to be venomous small and marginal farmers, with next to no protection in open fields, live in this mortal danger lurking around everywhere. By Mayank Chhaya Special to Hi India At a time when a large section of India’s farming community is profoundly angry over sweeping agriculture reforms that they think pose an existential threat to them, a barely acknowledged killer has been slithering through the country’s farmlands for millennia, devouring tens of thousands of farmers every year. It is snakebite. If it sounds like something facetious or perhaps overly dramatic, consider what a recent study found in terms of the cost to health and productivity to the country. At a meeting November of the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (ASTMH), it was reported that 3 million years of health and productivity are lost every year because of snakebites. Between 45,900 and 52,000 people die every year in India because of snakebite, according to various studies. In a country where 62 of the 300 species of snakes have been found to be venomous small and marginal farmers, with next to no protection in open fields, live in this mortal danger lurking around everywhere. What compounds the problem is the millennia of worship of snakes, most notably as the one named Vasuki that Shiv, one of a triad of Hindu gods, wears around his neck and arms. In Shiv’s case Vasuki the snake may be a symbol of the belief that he has transcended death and worldly pain but in the case of tens of millions of farmers the danger is very real and every day. The report at the ASTMH was by Nick Roberts, who was a member of the team at the Seattle-based University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) that calculated the latest figures. Combine 3 million years in health and productivity loss with some 50,000 lives every year and it offers a deeply troubling measure of the problem. Consider what the Mumbai-based Snakebite Healing and Education Society says on its website: “The actual mortality rate could be far greater than the estimated figure from the survey because it is practically impossible to accurately determine the number of people who were bitten by venomous snakes and died without or during treatment. There is also another facet to this issue. There are a far larger number of people who are saved after being bitten by a venomous snake but suffer permanent morbidity due to amputation or deformity of the affected area. The extent of malaise due to a venomous snakebite in India is staggering. The impact of the problem is more evident and severe in the rural parts of India, where farm laborers come in contact with snakes and medical facilities are limited. Local hospitals, clinics and care centers find anti-snake venom (ASV) difficult to procure. Limited supply of ASV adds to the demand and the distributors sell this life saving drug at an inflated price. Other significant
challenges include a lack of specialized training and community outreach programs to educate the population.”It is a measure of the scale of the problem that Nature, the world’s most prestigious science journal reported the problem of snakebite in its latest issue. Perhaps the most important reason why snakebite as a serious health hazard gets short shrift in India is because it is considered “the poor man’s disease” since it mainly involves small and marginal farmers. In a perspective on the Policy Platform, where authors discuss Neglected Tropical Diseases, Williams DJ, Faiz MA, Abela-Ridder B, Ainsworth S, Bulfone TC, Nickerson AD write, “Snakebite envenoming (SBE) affects as many as 2.7 million people every year, most of whom live in some of the world’s most remote, poorly developed, and politically marginalized tropical communities. With annual mortality of 81,000 to 138,000 and 400,000 surviving victims suffering permanent physical and psychological disabilities, SBE is a disease in urgent need of attention. Like many diseases of poverty, SBE has failed to attract requisite public health policy inclusion and investment for driving sustainable efforts to reduce the medical and societal burden. This is largely due to the demographics of the affected populations and their lack of political voice.” In certain quarters SBE has always found serious attention. For instance, the Policy Platform authors say, “In one of his final essays, statesman and former United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan said, ‘Snakebite is the most important tropical disease you’ve never heard of ’ [1]. Mr. Annan firmly believed that victims of snakebite envenoming should be recognized and afforded greater efforts at improved prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. During the last years of his
life, he advocated strongly for the World Health Organization (WHO) and the global community to give greater priority to this disease of poverty and its victims.” India has the dubious distinction of being the country where farmers get disproportionately affected by snakebite. It is perhaps in response to the late Kofi Annan’s exhortation that the WHO has set the goal of halving snakebite deaths and disabilities by 2030, a target that many find ambitious. In light of the COVID 19 pandemic which has stretched health systems worldwide to their breaking point it seems highly unlikely that snakebite as a seriously neglected tropical disease would find the attention it so urgently demands anytime soon. Add to that, the historical reverence and for and worship of snakes across India and the general apathy of successive governments and it is even less likely that snakebite as a serious threat to life would move many policymakers. Perhaps the only way to make an impact is to highlight the loss of agricultural productivity. While the question of snake worship goes to the heart of the freedom of faith, the question of snakebite as a silent killer ought to be treated as a policy priority. Indians generally are very familiar with the festival of Nag Panchami that is celebrated on the fifth day of bright half of lunar month of Shravana which corresponds with July/August. Such festivals have their societal significance and have to go on because they are organized in a controlled manner. That is unlike in fields where small and marginal farmers and farmhands work often unaware of the lurking danger or, if they are aware, do so on the basis of the culture of deep and abiding faith in snakes.

Durgamati is a genrebreaking movie
Bhumi Pednekar
I had seen the film, but once Durgamati came to me, I did not watch it again. I wanted my performance to be very personal. When I watched the original, I was amazed and in awe of what Anushka had done. Her performance really excited me to take the film on. The idea is never to compete with someone who has done the film before. This is my take. This is my individual journey, and it has to be such.
Did you get a chance to share screen space with Arshad Warsi? Actor Bhumi Pednekar on Amazon Prime Video What was that like?
release Durgamati, co-star Arshad Warsi and future projects. After Netflix’s Dolly Kitty Aur Wo Chamakte Sitaare, the talented Bhumi Pednekar will next be seen in Amazon Prime Video film Durgamati. A remake of the Telugu movie Bhaagamathie, Durgamati is being touted as a conspiracy thriller.
What drew you to the project?
You barely see any woman-led film with the kind of canvas that Durgamati gave me, where the opportunity for the performance is so macho and so full of heroism. It’s so out there. The scale is large, and it is full of drama. That’s something that excited me the most.
Have you seen the original? If yes, what did you think of it? Will you be measuring yourself against it?
All films are testing ground for actors: Kiara Advani
Kiara Advani says every film of hers has been a building block in shaping her career and the actor believes her best is yet to come. The actor, who made her debut with the Akshay Kumar-produced Fugly in 2014, was first noticed in Sushant Singh Rajput-starrer M S Dhoni: The Untold Story two years later. After some hits and misses, it was Karan Johar’s segment in the 2018 Netflix anthology film Lust Stories, in which Advani played a newly-married woman with a dull sex life, that turned out to be her breakthrough performance. “I work hard on every film of mine as I did on my first film. For me, every film has been instrumental in shaping my career and journey but I feel the best is yet to come. “I am in a happy space with the offers that are coming my way. I am happy filmmakers are seeing the potential in me to play different characters,” the 28-year-old actor told in an interview. “Each film and character has been different. I look to play versatile parts and I hope to continue doing it,” she added. Advani will next be seen in Shershaah, based on the true story of the Kargil War hero Vikram Batra, and the comedy Jug Jugg Jeeyo.
Oh yes. It was lovely. I have always admired Arshad sir’s work. I will always remember him as Circuit (a character from the Munnabhai movies). It is by far one of my favourite Arshad Warsi performances. Nobody has seen him in the avatar that he’s in Durgamati. He is playing a self-righteous political leader who is b eing doubted. And he’s given a wonderful performance.

Sharing a photo of herself and Divya, Bhattacharjee wrote, “Jab koi kisi k saath nahi hota tha toh bas tu hi hoti thi… Divu tu hi toh meri apni thi jisse main daant sakti thi, ruth sakti thi,dil ki baat keh sakti thi..I know life was tooo hard on you..the pain is intorelable…but i know today you must be in a better place and free from all the sorrows, pains, sadness, cheats, lies..i will miss you divu and tu bhi jaanti thi i loved you and cared for you…Badi tu thi par bacchi bhi tu hi thi…God bless your soul. Jahan bhi hai tu abhi bas khush reh.You will be missed & remembered.I love you.
Actors Sonam Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra are among the growing list of celebrities from Bollywood who have extended their support to farmers protesting against the Centre's new farm laws. Farmers have called for a 'Bharat Bandh' on Tuesday, warning that they will intensify their agitation and block more roads leading to the national capital if the government did not accept their demands.
The trailer for Anil Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap starrer AK vs AK is out. The clip dares the audience to step into the meta world of Bollywood created by filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane. Both Anil Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap play versions of themselves in AK vs AK. The movie is about a brash film director (Kashyap) who kidnaps the daughter of a movie star (Kapoor) and films the star’s desperate search for his daughter in real-
time as his next blockbuster. In the trailer, we see Anil going through various phases as he tries to come to terms with his life. Because Vikramaditya Motwane is at the helm of things, AK vs AK already looks like a well-shot and well-cut movie. At least that is what the trailer seems to suggest. I say it is a well-cut trailer because while we know enough, the clip doesn’t give everything away. As a bonus, Sonam Kapoor and Boney Kapoor also make cameos.
With red carpets rolled up, the Oscar race goes virtual
John Cena shares Ranveer Singh's pic, actor is amused
WWE champion and Hollywood star John Cena shared a picture of Ranveer Singh on his social media and the Bollywood actor had an amusing reaction. Cena posted a picture of Ranveer posing with a fan, who is wearing a mask which has a line from the song "Apna time aayega". The Hollywood star did not write a caption for Ranveer's image, which currently has 479K likes on the website. Ranveer took to the comment section and dropped a laughing emoji and wrote: "Kuch bhi (anything)."
Zidd teaser: Amit Sadh's war drama is sure to give you goosebumps The Oscar season is pushing ahead, despite the pandemic, despite a year where most of the biggest releases were postponed. The timetable has shifted two months: The Academy Awards are to be held April 25. And awards season, such as it is, has gone virtual. The Oscar race will Zoomed. This is the time of year when Hollywood’s awards-season-industrial complex usually shifts into high gear. It’s a frothy, festive run of the year’s final premieres and screenings — all part of a carefully orchestrated dance to court tastemakers and, ultimately, academy voters. The movies may be finished — picture locked — but their Oscar fortunes are in flux right up until ballots are cast. And a glittering, glad-handing ecosystem of cocktails and Q&As works very hard to steer the conversation. This year, with many
under quarantine, theatres shuttered in Los Angeles and New York and, well, some more pressing concerns than who’s campaigning for best supporting actor, awards season is operating in a strange COVID-19 vacuum with only a whiff of the stuff it thrives on: buzz. For Awards Daily founder Sasha Stone, who has been covering the Oscars since 2000, it’s like nothing she’s ever seen — an awards season without glamour, without red carpets, without anything that feels real. She compares this year’s race to the floating debris left by a sinking ship.
ZEE5 is a pioneer when it comes to presenting progressive and heart-warming stories in the OTT space. Now, the platform brings to the forefront Zidd, real story with Zidd, a true story of a real-life Kargil hero with a wilful journey that celebrates his conviction and his ups and downs. With the recent release of the first poster, fans could not stop raving about Amit Sadh's statuesque look as an army soldier. Just launched the teaser of Zidd gives the audiences a glimpse of the passionate journey filled with heart and emotions.

T Natarajan : New Yorker King T Natarajan was only supposed to travel with the squad as a net bowler. However, his performances with the white-ball make him a vital asset in the Indian team. HiIndia Newsdesk “ T Natarajan is coming beautifully, he can be an asset for us in
whiteball cricket,” India captain Virat Kohli had said after the first T20I against Australia in Canberra. True to his observation, Natarajan did make a mark in the second T20I in Sydney where close to 400 runs were scored by the two teams but he stood out with figures of 4-0-20-2. Natarajan’s inclusion also adds a new dimension to the Indian
bowling attack since he is the only left-armer among the current crop of Indian seamers. Thus for Thangarasu Natarajan, who hails from Chinnappampatti (a small village in Salem district in India), it has been nothing but a dream start to his international career. But will his perfect beginning finally end India’s search for a left-arm pacer? In Sydney, Natarajan conceded just one run in his first over, six in his second, five in his third over, and eight in his final over which was why his economy rate touched above five. Hence, it was not without a reason that player of the match, Hardik Pandya said, “I thought he should be the Man of the Match, because the bowlers struggled here and he had a really good game.” How far Natarajan goes, only time will tell but if he does sustain this initial euphoria then he will surely become an invaluable asset for India’s T20 team.

Vijender Singh Says Will Return Khel George Russell Tipped For F1 Stardom Ratna If New Farm Laws Not Withdrawn As Rivals Call For Level Playing Field
HiIndia Newsdesk Boxer Vijender Singh who joined the farmers' agitation at Singhu border on Sunday said that he will return his Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award if the new agriculture laws are not withdrawn. The farmers' protest at the Singhu border against Central Government's Farm laws entered the 11th day on Sunday. Addressing a gathering of protestors, Singh said, "I came here today as our big brother Punjab is here, so how can people of Haryana lag behind. If the government doesn't withdraw the black laws, I will return my Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award-the highest sporting honour of the nation." "The farmers' unity was always there before it will also remain in the future," he added.
HiIndia Newsdesk Team chief Toto Wolff hailed George Russell as a new star on Monday after his storming drive for Mercedes in Sunday's Sakhir Grand Prix, while rival drivers said he had exposed Formula One's need for a more level playing field. Mercedes boss Wolff said the 22-year-old Briton, released by struggling Williams to stand in for Covid-19 victim seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, had exceeded expectations with a polished personal performance throughout the weekend. Russell said he was "gutted" after finishing ninth, having appeared to be set for victory before a rare bungled pit stop and a late puncture gave Racing Point's Sergio Perez his maiden win in his 190th race. "It won't have been his last attempt for victory," said Wolff. "It's just the beginning of a fairy tale that didn't work out today. I would say that a new star has been born!" While Russell deserved acclaim from Wolff, others pointed out that he was not the only driver whose talent was hidden by machinery that was uncompetitive.
PSG, Istanbul Basaksehir players walk off Parupalli Kashyap, HS Prannoy Along after alleged racism by match official With Two More Test Positive For COVID-19: Report
HiIndia Newsdesk The Champions League game between Paris Saint-Germain and Basaksehir has been interrupted after players walked off the field on Tuesday after alleging a fourth official used a racial slur against an assistant coach. Players from the Turkish team were furious after assistant coach Pierre Webo was shown a red card by the match referee Ovidiu Hategan of Romania at Parc des Princes, saying that the fourth official had used a racial term against Webo, who is from Cameroon, before he was sent off.
HiIndia Newsdesk Four top Indian men's badminton players including former CWG gold medallist Parupalli Kashyap, HS Prannoy and RMV Gurusaidutt, have tested positive for COVID-19 but they are all "asymptomatic". Doubles specialist Pranaav Jerry Chopra is the fourth player to test positive. All the players are currently in self isolation. "The players took the RT-PCR test as a precautionary measure a few days back after one of them was showing very mild symptoms. "Kashyap, Guru, Prannoy and Pranaav returned positive but Saina tested negative," a source in the Gopichand academy told on conditions of anonymity. "However Guru's wife Amulya Gulapalli and Saina Nehwal have tested negative."
HiIndia Newsdesk When the Champions League draw put Barcelona and Juventus in the same group, soccer fans all over the world eagerly awaited the prospect of watching Lionel Messi versus Cristiano Ronaldo again. The two had not faced each other since the Portuguese swapped Real Madrid for Juventus in 2018. The fans, however, had to wait when the two men were denied a reunion in Turin in October, as Ronaldo missed Barca’s 2-0 victory after a positive COVID-19 test. So all eyes were on the duo on Tuesday, with Ronaldo healthy again and raring to go, and it was the Portuguese who emphatically came out on top, scoring two penalties as Juve triumphed 3-0 to claim top spot in Group G. A constant thorn in the Catalans’ side while in Spain with Real, the 35-year-old Ronaldo scored two penalties to take his goal tally against Barca to an extraordinary 20 in 31 games.
Sania Mirza's "Twinning" Photo With Her "Little Star" Son Izhaan Is Cuteness Overload
Sania Mirza posted a picture on social media where she is seen posing with her son Izhaan Mirza Malik and captioned it as "Twinning and winning with my little star." India's tennis star Sania is married to Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik. Sania, who turned 34 recently, had said last month she wasn't sure about returning to the tennis court after her pregnancy. "Having put-on around 23kgs during my pregnancy, I wasn't sure if I was ever going to get back to being fit and playing tennis again."

Deepika Padukone's winter staple look
While she does have her fair share of sweaters and turtlenecks, Deepika Padukone can't do without trench coats Now that winter is here and we're beginning to step out again, we're on the lookout for fresher winter styles. And who better to take inspiration from, than our favourite Bollywood divas? Deepika Padukone loves bundling up in classic winter looks. She has her fair share of denim jackets, leather jackets, pullovers, turtlenecks and more. But one piece she can't have too many of, is the trench coat. Take a look at 6 times she made a statement with the silhouette. Bundling up on international waters, Deepika Padukone opted for a clean look in a head-to-toe white outfit. She picked out a dramatic pussy bow sheer blouse that she styled with white flared pants to keep cosy. For a chic look, DP threw a heavy white trench coat over her shoulders and completed her look with white pumps and statement earrings, for a glam look.
Vegan Gulab Jamun Do not be afraid to defy conventions: Shah Rukh Khan
"Whatever happened to me happened because I have always been terrified of failure," he said “Don’t expect words of wisdom from me. I’m just gonna tell my life’s journey in very simple words, and which may not leave you inspired but will help you survive this life. And if you can do that kids, if you can survive, happiness, creativity and success will follow on its own. Only I hope my words will give you enough insight when you hear the story that I have to tell you, that you can tell the world, world move over, you are standing on my oxygen tube, I need to breathe.” “So journeys can be defined by age and time or even by destinations as most often they are, but I feel it’s hard for me to tell you the story of my life in those terms because the concept of time has always eluded me. The day my father died seemed longer than my entire childhood. The day I felt my first success seemed fleetingly hour long, not long enough perhaps. I wonder where it went. Even the cycle of time confounds me. I worked at night, I worked the dark until the sunrise on most days and fall asleep as the world awakens to light. My friends call me an owl. I like to think of myself as a bat, Batman the prince of darkness.”

However, if you have vowed to eat clean and healthy and miss gorging on your favourite sweets, we are here to solve that very problem with a special recipe that does not compromise on the taste. Enjoy vegan gulab jamuns which can be made in no time.
Ingredients 4 – Bread slices Coconut milk, as needed ½ cup – Sugar 1 cup – Water Canola oil, for deep frying
Steps *In a thick-based pan, boil sugar and water on low flame until the sugar dissolves and the mixture becomes slightly thicker and sticky. *Now turn off the flame and allow it to cool down. Until then, remove the brown edges of the bread slices and cut into small pieces. *Gradually add coconut milk and knead into a dough. Make tiny little balls, as per the size you want. *Clean your hands and mould them again so as to give them a smooth texture. Now add canola oil and deep fry the balls until they turn slightly dark brown. *Heat up the sugar syrup again and dip the fried balls into it. Keep it aside for 2 hours or enjoy them once they have cooled down.

Soreness Is a Sign of a Good Workout
found that consistent runners (many of whom were well into their 70s by the time the research period ended) showed a lower incidence of arthritis than non-runners as they aged. It also showed that runners have a lower risk of osteoarthritis and hip replacements, suggesting that pounding pavements isn’t actually as bad for you as advertised.
This is how female Olympic weightlifters in the lighter weight categories can outlift larger men. Getting big requires specific, targeted training, including lots of volume and extra calories and protein – and it almost never happens by accident.
Exercise Is Bad for Your Knees
Actually, it’s more like the opposite: properly done squats will strengthen the stabiliser muscles around your knee joints, safeguarding you against injury as well

miling, as it turns out, has truly remarkable effects. First, doing it actually makes you feel good even if you're not feeling good in the moment. A 2009 fMRI study out of Echnische Universität in Munich demonstrated conclusively that the brain's happiness circuitry is activated when you smile (regardless of your current mood). If you're down, smiling actually prompts your brain to produce feel-good hormones, giving credence to the adage, "fake it til you make it" when it comes to your state of mind. Not only are we perceived as more likable and courteous, but those who benefit from our sunny grins actually see us as more competent.

grain should be blamed for causing weight gain, or highlighted for helping with weight loss as well
Let’s be honest: you’ve never seen Britain’s greatest living Olympian, Sir Steve Redgrave™, dry-heaving over the side of a cross-trainer.
T
the choice is on your preference, and the way your body reacts to it. Some people find rice less filling than rotis, and end up eating more quantity of rice per sitting. "This is where the trouble begins, and you gain weight. So, the culprit is not the grain, but your style of eating," the Mumbai-based nutritionist. For all of you who find rice less filling or satiating in nature, you can make your meal more filling but increasing the quantity of vegetables or dal. "Similarly, some people find it difficult to digest rotis. It may make them feel gassy or have stomach distress. This makes them eat lesser quantity of roti, which may in turn help them with weight, to add that no particular grain should be blamed for causing weight gain, or highlighted for helping with weight loss as well. No matter what grain you choose, it is important that you enjoy eating it, and eat it in controlled proportions. Portion control is the key when it comes to weight loss. You can enjoy your favourite comfort foods, but do eat in limited portion size. As nutritionist Ishi Khosla says, you must eat only till you are 80% full. Eat your meals without any distractions like your phone, TV, book, newspaper or a laptop. This will help you to focus on your food and also prevent overeating.
How much vitamin B12 do we need and what's the best way to get it? What are the health benefits of vitamin B12?
What is vitamin B12?
This essential nutrient works to preserve the health of your nerve and blood cells, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Vitamin B12 also helps make DNA, the genetic material in all cells, and helps to prevent a type of anemia called megaloblastic anemia that makes people tired and weak.

Second judge says Volkswagen CEO expects Trump can’t ban TikTok autonomous cars on market from 2025-2030 A federal judge has granted a preliminar y injunction that should keep the US Commerce D e p ar t me nt f rom b an n i ng transactions with TikTok. The Trump administration issued an executive order on August 6th that would have blocked transactions between US companies and TikTok and WeChat’s Chinese parent companies, ByteDance and Tencent. Trump declared TikTok and WeChat a “national emergency,” citing privacy and security concerns. That order invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), a law that allows Trump to ban transactions between the US and foreign entities. However, in his opinion accompanying today’s decision, US district judge Carl Nichols said that “the government likely exceeded IEEPA’s express limitations.” He granted TikTok’s motion for a preliminary injunction against each item the Commerce Department was attempting to prohibit
The chief executive of Volkswagen, the world’s largest vehicle maker by sales, expects autonomous vehicles to be ready for sale between 2025 and 2030, he told a magazine. Herbert Diess cited the improving performance of computer chips needed in autonomous cars while developments in artificial intelligence are also speeding the process. “It is foreseeable that the systems will soon be able to master even the complex situations of autonomous driving,” Diess told the Wirtschaftswoche weekly magazine. Diess defected from BMW in 2015 and has helped Volkswagen to reform after its diesel scandal with a 73 billion euro (£65.84 billion) electric vehicle investment plan.
Xiaomi QLED 4K TV India launch
Xiaomi has confirmed that it will be launching a new 4K QLED TV in India on December 16 at 12pm. This will be the company’s final product launch in India before the year ends. The company released a teaser today on Mi India’s Twitter profile which confirmed the date and time of the launch. The name of the TV is not confirmed by the company as of yet, although it is speculated it will likely be the Mi TV 5 Pro, which launched in China late last year. The Mi TV 5 Pro has a QLED or Quantum Light Emitting Diode (QLED) display, a display technology that was first introduced by Samsung back in 2017. The announcement confirms Xiaomi entering the premium television segment in India, something the company had hinted at earlier as well. Xiaomi’s teasers have been talking about a ‘Quantum’ leap, which indicates the company will bring the QLED technology to India next.
The best Chromebooks to buy in 2020 Redmi Watch launched in China, looks like another Apple Watch clone
A
n honorable mention is the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook, a gorgeous laptop with a unique color and 4K AMOLED display, which didn’t quite make this list because of its unfortunately short battery life. We’re looking forward to reviewing Lenovo’s Flex 5 Chromebook with a thin 2-in-1 design, and the affordable IdeaPad Flex 3 Chromebook which has a unique chassis and an SD card reader. What most buyers want in the best Chromebook are likely the same things they want in any laptop: a good keyboard, solid build quality, long battery life, a nice screen, and enough power to do the things you want. More Chromebooks can meet those qualifications than ever before, but these are the ones that rise above the rest. Acer’s Chromebook Spin 713 is, hands-down, the best Chromebook you can buy. With a gorgeous 3:2 screen that rivals some more expensive competitors, you’ll have a ton of extra vertical space for your work and multitasking. The keyboard is excellent with a comfortable, quiet feel, and nice backlighting. There’s even an HDMI port, which you don’t see on a thin Chromebook every day. And (most importantly) the 10th-Gen Intel processors can handle a heavy load of tabs with no problem. The Spin’s speakers aren’t great, and there’s no biometric login, but those are reasonable sacrifices to make for a laptop of this quality at this low of a price. In a market where the main differences between Chromebooks in this price range boil down to their screens and maybe an included stylus, Acer sets itself apart by making an affordable laptop that’s excellent in almost every way.
Redmi Watch is the first smartwatch under the label. The Redmi Watch's design appears to be very inspired by the Apple Watch. It was launched in China along with the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G series.
X i a o m i ’s R e d m i brand has introduced its own Redmi Watch, the first under the label. The Redmi Wa t c h’s d e s i g n appears to be very inspired by the Apple Watch, though this kind of design inspiration was also seen on the Mi Watch. Redmi Watch isn’t the only one to sport a design like the Apple Watch; Oppo’s smartwatch also has a similar design. The Redmi Watch has a square dial, and come with features like a 24×7 heart rate monitor, tracking for all kinds of sports activities, support for NFC payments, among other features. The Redmi Watch was announced along with the Redmi Note 9 5G series, which took place yesterday in China. It will be compatible with both Android and iOS devices. Like other Redmi products, the watch is an affordable option. It starts at Yuan 299 which is nearly Rs 3,352 when converted to Indian currency. The watch is currently up for pre-orders on Xiaomi’s official China website. The watch will be available for
sale on December 1. It will come in Black, Blue, and Ivory white colours. Redmi also has a Cherry Blossom Powder and Pine Needle Green colour version, though these do not seem to be available for pre-order. The Redmi Watch has a 1.4-inch square display with 320 x 320 pixels resolutions. Dimensions of the product are 41mm x 35mm x 10.9mm. It comes with a 2.5D tempered glass screen on top, and support Bluetooth 5.0 BLE. The watch has the following sensors: Optical heart rate sensor, six-axis sensor, geomagnetic sensor and ambient light sensor. According to the description page on Xiaomi’s China website, the Redmi Watch also comes with 5ATM water resistance to ensure it will remain damage free even when immersed in up to 50 metres of water. The watch has 120 watch face options, and it comes with a 230 mAh battery. Redmi says the watch will take two hours to get charged completely with seven days of battery life in regular usage and 12 days in battery life mode.

Indian American Students Named 2020 Three Dot Dash Global Teen Leaders

HI INDIA NEWS DESK LOS ANGELES, CA -At least five Indian American students are among 35 global teens who have been named 2020 Three Dot Dash Global Teen Leaders by the We Are Family Foundation. Carefully selected and curated from hundreds of applicants, these 15-19-year-old teens are innovating technologies and harnessing creativity to positively impact the world. The Indian American students included Ishaan Brar, Kasyap Chakravadhanula, Laalitya Acharya, Neil Deshmukh and Shreya Ramachandran. Three students from India, Arunima Sen, Harsh Agrawal and Laya Pothunuri, are also among the awardees. “They are engineering sustainable skyscrapers, developing urban gardens, healing relationships between communities and the police, and developing tools to detect serious illnesses, as they demand a lead role in shaping our future,” said the foundation. Brar, 17, strives to greatly reduce
the disparity in access to quality healthcare and health education in the United States. By integrating health education into Healthy Community’s services, Brar hopes to improve patients’ long-term health and lifestyle. Sixteen-year-old Chakravadhanula created a digital platform to connect health professionals with assistance from artificial intelligence with his friend, Ritvik, when he was 14. This led him to found the Medical Bridge Project – They have educated doctors in nine countries and built partnerships with Microsoft Healthcare Intelligence, Microsoft 4Afrika and ASU+Mayo Clinic. In November 2018, Acharya, 16, created Ocula – an affordable, accessible and efficient diabetes detection system that uses images of the eye. She has since created a version of Ocula that detects the specific level of diabetes, which provides a more accurate treatment plan. She also created Nereid in February 2019. Nereid is a cost-effective solution to detect bacteria contamination in
water for early detection of waterborne disease, which can identify the specific types of bacteria. Both Ocula and Nereid have successfully completed preliminary trials. In 2017 Deshmukh, now 17, l created PlantumAI, which uses artificial intelligence to solve three primary problems faced by farmers in resource-scarce areas: crop disease; overuse of pesticides; and unpredictable harvest schedules due to climate change. . It also advises on optimal harvesting techniques and connects farmers to local universities for support. Ramachandran, now 16, created The Grey Water Project when she was 13 after visiting India and Tulare County in Calif., where she saw people struggling with water scarcity. We Are Family Foundation is a not-for-profit organization cofounded by legendary musician Nile Rodgers and is dedicated to creating programs that promote cultural diversity while nurturing and mentoring the vision, talents and ideas of young people who are positively changing the world.Three Dot Dash is a global youth initiative of We Are Family Foundation is a yearlong social entrepreneur incubator and mentoring program designed to amplify the work of young people successfully addressing issues related to education, environment, food, health, safety, shelter, water and having a positive impact on global communities.
Areas in Cook County High in Delinquent Property Taxes Lose Resident, Larger Tax and High Violent Crime HI INDIA NEWS DESK CHICAGO, IL- Treasurer Maria Pappas today released a study which shows that the areas in Cook County where delinquent properties are a severe problem are losing population, experiencing larger property tax increases, and confronting high levels of violent crime, all of which drives down the number of bids at the Scavenger Sale auction. The study looked at the properties in Chicago wards and suburbs that were offered at the seven Scavenger Sales held from 2007 to 2019. The 60-page study found: ] • In Chicago, 11,955 (50%) of the 23,969 violent crimes in 2019 took place in the top 13 wards with the most properties offered at the Scavenger Sale. Twelve of those thirteen wards also lost population. ] • The top 16 suburbs with the most properties offered at the Scavenger Sale also lost population. In those suburbs, taxes rose 183% on properties offered at the Scavenger Sale, compared with an 83% increase on all properties in those
suburbs. ] • Out of the 145,030 times that a property was offered at the Scavenger Sale, the taxes were sold to private buyers only 8,449 times (5.8%). ] “By the time of the Scavenger Sale, my office has already collected more than 99.77 percent of property taxes,” Pappas said. “The goal of the Scavenger Sale is not to collect delinquent taxes, but to find new owners and get the properties back on the tax rolls.” ] “The General Assembly created the Scavenger Sale in 1939,” she added. “Now, it’s time for the Legislature to revisit the Scavenger Sale process.” ] Held every two years, the Scavenger Sale offers to investors and developers properties that have three or more years of delinquent taxes. ] The study also found: ] • Just 51,320 properties have been offered at the seven Scavenger Sales since 2007 as some properties were offered multiple times. ] • Of the 51,320 properties, 25,601 (50%) are vacant lots. ] • Majority Black wards accounted for 21,533 (84%) of the 25,730 Chicago properties offered at a Scavenger Sale. ] • Twenty-nine suburbs with a Black
population of at least 40 percent accounted for 20,366 (79%) of the 25,590 suburban properties offered at a Scavenger Sale. ] • Cook County Land Bank Authority has submitted no-cash bids on 22,786 properties at three sales since 2015. When a government agency places a nocash bid it acts as a tax buyer, except it is not required to pay anything toward the delinquent taxes and is not required to pay taxes that come due after the Scavenger Sale, unlike private buyers. ] • Of those properties, the Land Bank has returned 8,886 properties from the 2015 and 2017 Scavenger Sales. ] • The Land Bank’s practice of bidding, returning, and then rebidding on properties prevents any other interested party from bidding on the property at both future annual or Scavenger Sales. Of the 9,190 properties it sought in 2019, 3,653 (39.7%) were properties it had previously returned.
RS Expands Identity Protection Program To All Taxpayers HI INDIA NEWS DESK CHICAGO,IL -False tax refund schemes have been a growing problem for the IRS and the victims of fraud as a result of identity theft and the filing of fraudulent returns to obtain refunds. Tax identity theft occurs when fraudsters steal personal information, such as a name, address or social security number, to file an inaccurate return in order to redirect or falsify a refund. ]THE IDENTITY PROTECTION PIN (IP PIN)
To combat identity theft, the IRS devised the Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN). The IP PIN is similar to two-factor authentication, which uses two sources of identification/ authorization. The IP PIN is a sixdigit number that acts as a gatekeeper to prevent fraudsters from filing a return under a stolen social security number. While this program was initially focused on professional tax preparers and those who had already fallen victim to identity theft, the IRS recently announced an expanded effort that will enable all individual taxpayers to apply for IP PIN. ]JOINING THE IP PIN PROGRAM
For those who have already been victims of an identity theft scam, the IRS will provide an IP PIN for the upcoming tax season. Other taxpayers may opt to register voluntarily with the IRS in midJanuary 2021 once the IRS launches its new portal. Once an IP PIN is issued, the taxpayer’s identity needs to be confirmed through a verification process. While spouses and dependents of taxpayers may opt into the program, they are subject to a separate verification process conducted by the IRS. ]GUIDANCE FROM MARCUM
Watch for additional updates. Marcum will share more information on the registration process when released by the IRS. Once issued an IP PIN, remember to: Enter a correct IP PIN electronically or by paper to prevent rejections or delays in filing, which would then require further verification. Keep the IP PIN secure. Don’t fall victim to fraud by providing the IP PIN in a phone call, email, or fax from those claiming to be the IRS. The IRS will never ask for the IP PIN.
