When you accepted the Filmfare Award for Best Actress this year, you thanked all your fellow nominees. What prompted you to do that?

very girl nominated this year in both the popular and the critics’ category was part of a special film. I mentioned in the speech how each one of them is so courageous in choosing the kind of films they have chosen. Because I know the kind of hardships a female actor faces. You can’t put too much ‘feminism’ in a female-centric film because it’s not considered ‘safe’ from a business point of view. Then, there are budget constraints. A female-centric film has a limited budget compared to a male-centric film. Casting too isn’t easy. Because, trust me, no matter how big an actress you become in the film industry, it’s tough to cast a male actor opposite you when it comes to female-centric films. I can say from experience that my directors face a lot of issues as male actors feel insecure about not being the lead or getting lesser screen time. Sometimes I wonder how insecure you are, when you’re giving away a good film just because you have 10 per cent less time than the girl. Girls have been doing that for decades, where they have 1/5th of the screen space and they still happily do it. Because they feel that even that much is enough for them to show their potential. Until last year I was doing films like Mission Mangal, Soorma or Judwaa 2. Because I wanted people to understand that I’m not against doing lesser screen space. I’m just saying give me a role through which the audience will remember me when they walk out of the theatre. And after all that’s sorted, we have to make sure we don’t clash with any big male star when it comes to the film’s release. Because even if the film with the female lead looks more promising, the film with the male star ends up getting more number of screens and shows. Gender-equality or empowerment will happen only when the actresses empower each other, when they stand up for each other, when they appreciate each other. I really feel we should start appreciating each other more. Only then the next level of empowerment will happen.

BMC wants to widen road touching Amitabh Bachchan’s bungalow

The Shiv Sena-ruled Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked the Mumbai Suburban Collector to demarcate the portion of a road touching megastar Amitabh Bachchan’s Prateeksha bungalow in Juhu here, for widening work aimed at easing traffic woes. The BMC in May sent a letter to the Mumbai Suburban District Collector asking him to undertake “appropriate action on measurement and demarcation” of the Sant Dnyaneshwar Marg, on which the actor’s bungalow is located. Congress corporator Tulip Miranda said the BMC notified Bachchan in 2017 along with seven other property owners, which include filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, about the widening work of the Sant Dnyaneshwar Marg. While the wall of the plot adjoining Bachchan’s bungalow was demolished, Bachchan’s bungalow was left untouched, the corporator said, bemoaning the “VIP treatment” accorded to the veteran actor.

– Soak urad dal with methi for 2 hours. – Grind to make a fine paste. – Add finely chopped onions, green

chillies and coriander leaves to the ragi flour. Also, add salt to this mixture. – Add enough water to make thin pouring consistency and keep aside for 20-30 minutes. – Now add the batter to hot greased tawa and cover it with a lid. – When one side is cooked, turn upside down and wait for a minute or two. – Remove from tawa and serve hot with green/red chutney or white butter.

Mirza Ghalib and the Law A Curious Romance

hat on earth did Ghalib have to do with law? One may legitimately ask. To answer this question, we need to take a look at Ghalib’s socio-familial circumstances. Ghalib’s father, Mirza Abdullah Beg Khan, died in 1803 when Ghalib was only five. For a few years after his father’s death, his uncle, Mirza Nasrullah Beg, who was commander of Agra Fort under the Marathas, took care of him and his siblings. In the late 18th century, he had been appointed as an officer of 400 cavalrymen in the British Armed Forces by its commander-in-chief, General Gerald Lake, at a handsome monthly salary of Rs 1,700. When he died in 1806, his family pension was fixed at Rs 10,000 per annum, to be paid by the British East India Company. But it was linked, for some reason, to the estate of Firozepur Jhirka. In 1822, the Nawab of Loharu and Firozepur Jhirka, Ahmad Baksh Khan, whose niece Umrao would later be Ghalib’s wife, appointed his eldest son Shamsuddin as his heir apparent and estate manager, and the Begs’ family pension was reduced to Rs 3,000 per annum, out of which Ghalib’s share was Rs 62.50 per month. Ghalib spent half his life unsuccessfully litigating for this amount. Having failed to resolve the matter through the intervention of influential friends, he decided to seek recourse to legal remedies. For years, this would remain the central concern and activity of his life. Ghalib’s frequent brushes with the law resonate in the form of legal terminology married to verse in many of his ghazals. Diwan-e-Ghalib is replete with terms such as adaalat (court), faujdaari (criminal law), sarishtedaar (court master), gawaah (witness), talab (summon), hukm (order), muqaddama (case or lawsuit), daim al-habs (life imprisonment), giraftaari (arrest), muddai (plaintiff or petitioner), mudda’a alaih (defendant or respondent), roobakaari (hearing), etc. Even though Ghalib uses these terms metaphorically, such use itself shows his familiarity with the legal system of his day, points out Tahir Mahmood in his essay, Legal Metaphor in Ghalib’s Urdu Poetry, in the Islamic and Comparative Law Quarterly (VIII:3, Delhi, 1988). In a five-verse set found in one of his most beautiful ghazals, which begins with the words Phir kuchh ek dil ko beqaraari hai (Once again, the heart is somewhat restless), Ghalib tries a delightful use of legal metaphor.

The grand bard’s lifelong quest as a litigant not only influenced his poetry, it even decided his fate as a defendant. His relationship with law and judiciary continues to this day in intriguing ways. Saif Mahmood

When poetry came to the poet’s rescue Ghalib’s life as a litigant surely influenced his poetry. But there is also a fascinating instance where his poetry decided his fate as a defendant. It is said that once a wine merchant sued Ghalib for recovery of debt. There is some confusion as to whether this was the same claim in which a decree of Rs 5,000 was passed against him in 1837 or not. Anyhow, the matter came up before the Small Causes Court presided over by Mufti Sadruddin Aazurdah, the chief mufti of Delhi, the highest judicial position in those days that an Indian could occupy. Mufti saheb was himself a well-known poet and an old friend of Ghalib’s. In those days, judges would not ‘recuse’ themselves for any reason. They would hear all cases before them and, as expected of judges, decide “without fear or favour”. When Ghalib appeared before the Mufti in response to court summons, the Mufti asked him if he admitted the claim. Ghalib recited his, now oft-quoted, couplet: Qarz ki peete thay mai, lekin samajhte thay, ki haan Rang laave gi hamaari faaqa-masti ek din I used to drink on credit and think

little did he know that even after his death, his rights would have to be litigated for. In response to a PIL filed in the Delhi high court in 1996, the court ordered the restoration of Ghalib’s usurped and decrepit haveli at Gali Qasimjan in Old Delhi’s Ballimaran, where he had spent the last nine years of his life. The haveli is today a monument protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. Ghalib’s relationship with law and judiciary continues in curious ways. In 2005, hearing a PIL relating to the same haveli, the then Delhi high court chief justice,

Markandey Katju, admonished the counsel for the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for having come to defend Ghalib without reading his poetry! And in 2011, Justice Rajiv Shakdher of the same high court, rejecting the argument of a distinguished lawyer that expenses incurred on his heart treatment were deductible while computing income tax, began his judgment (Shanti Bhushan vs CIT) with one of Ghalib’s most well-known couplets: Dil-e-naadaan tujhe hua kya hai Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai O naive heart, what has happened to you? Whatever could be the cure for this pain? In a bizarre incident in 2012, a Maharashtra police inspector filed an affidavit before the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal, claiming that one of the members of a banned organisation was inspired by Ghalib! The following sher had been found scribbled in his diary: Mauj-e-khoon sar se guzar hi kyon na jaaye Aastaan-e-yaar se uth jaaein kya? Roughly translated, it would mean: “Even if a wave of blood were to pass over my head, I would not leave my beloved’s doorway”. If charged for malicious prosecution, the inspector would be well within his rights to plead the defence of insanity.

He talks about the coming up of minor and major cricket leagues in the country and how cricket – a passion for most South Asians is all set to become bigger than ever in USA

he sunny summer weekends are spent breaking into a sweat and a run for the newly minted minor cricket league team – Chicago Blasters. Just past this week, the young and enthusiastic players, most of whom are from the Chicagoland area, have been practicing their game to compete for the upcoming league cricket matches to be held across the US. Beginning mid-July the team will start practicing turf cricket as the team starts its preparation for its first big match on July 31 at Bollingbroke against another minor league from the US. Bringing the zest of cricket to life in Chicago is none other than famous community leader, activist and entrepreneur Iftekhar Shareef. Shareef, a long time Chicago area resident decided to pick one of the 25 minor cricket leagues that have been introduced in the country by US Cricket. Talking about this ambitious project, Shareef says, “It is heartening to see that finally grand plans are being made for cricket in America. Traditionally, cricket as a sport is not introduced at school level in the country but all this may be changing. The International Cricket Council has seen that cricket has a lot of potential in the US and the need is to nurture it and popularize it.” Talking about his team and how he came up with the name, Shareef says, “We were given a free hand on deciding the names of the team and we think Chicago Blasters best describes our feisty players.” True to the spirit of the place, he loves to call home, Shareef says, “We have harnessed local talent and most of the players are from Chicagoland area and may be one from the nearby Milwaukee, Wisconsin area.” The introduction of 25 minor and 4 major cricket leagues in America is being seen as an exciting proposition by those who are passionate about the game. Shareef says, “A lot of people have been playing cricket in Chicago. Can you believe there are about 400 teams in Chicago and 4 leagues? So far there has been a lack of recognition for the game but with the coming of the leagues and healthy competitive matches between regions as well as the plans for major leagues which have big names attached to them such as Shah Rukh Khan and Satya Nadella, the future of cricket looks up in America.

The team and its management Iftekhar Shareef is visibly excited at the commitment and enthusiasm the players are already showing. The team is ready with all of the 18 players. The captain of the team is Asher Mahdi and Vice Captain is Mohammad Asaduddin, the son of former Indian captain, Mohammad Azharuddin. Asaduddin will be joining the team as the marquee player. Great things seem to be happening for cricket in America, there are plans to spend US $2 billion in promoting cricket, there are plans to build four stadiums in different cities such as Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco. There are talks that from these teams the players can also be selected for the US team. As is common knowledge that cricket remains the popular sport for south Asians, currently the majority of players in the team are of South Asian origin but they also have one from Afghan origin and a South African descent player. The dream for Mr Shareef is to see American kids playing the sport and taking interest in it. On his association with cricket, he says, “I have been passionate about the game and in the last five years, we conducted show matches between India and Pakistan. We had a match where former Indian captain Azharuddin led the India team and Pakistani player Rizwan-Ul-Haq led the Pakistani team. The game was enjoyed by everyone. However Mr Shareef ’s passion for sports extends beyond cricket too. Not many know that he is the Chairman of Tug of War Association of Telangana in India. A native of a village called Shamshabad in India, he has been promoting indigenous games in his village. He says, “I realise in remote and small places talent is there but often players do not have access to equipment so we promote sports like Kho Kho and Tug of War in such places in India.

The American cricket dream Mr Shareef who came to the US, 40 years ago as a student with $100 in his pocket says that he has lived his American dream but now he wants kids to live their dream of becoming some of the best players in the world. He says, “We are ready to provide the platform so that more and more American kids feel encouraged to play the sport. Mr Shareef who is also an activist is not just rooting for cricket but has been an active voice to lobby for dual citizenship between Indian and US. Back in 2007, he became the first person to receive the Overseas Citizen Card from Dr Manmohan Singh. Two Indian Americans Among Six Charged by SEC in Silicon Valley Insider Trading Ring

HiIndia Newsdesk SILICON VALLEY, CA- The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on June 15 announced insider trading charges against a Silicon Valley trading ring, two of whom were Indian Americans Naveen Sood and Naresh Ramaiya. The six-member ring generated nearly $1.7 million in illegal profits and losses avoided by trading on the confidential earnings information of two local technology companies.

According to the SEC’s complaint, Nathaniel Brown, who served as the revenue recognition manager for Infinera Corporation, repeatedly tipped Infinera’s unannounced quarterly earnings and financial performance to his best friend, Benjamin Wylam, from April 2016 until Brown left the company in November 2017, the SEC news release said. The SEC’s complaint alleges that Wylam, a high school teacher and bookmaker, traded on this information and also tipped Sood, who owed Wylam a six-figure gambling debt. Sood allegedly traded on this information and tipped his three friends Ramaiya, Marcus Bannon, and Matthew Rauch, each of whom also illegally traded on the information, according to the complaint. The SEC’s complaint further alleges that Bannon tipped Sood with material, nonpublic information concerning Bannon’s employer, Fortinet Inc. As alleged in the complaint, Bannon learned in early October 2016 that Fortinet was going to unexpectedly announce preliminary negative financial results. Bannon allegedly tipped this information to Sood, who used it to trade, the release noted.

Earlier winners of the award in economics include Gerard Debreu, Hal Varian and Francis Diebold. Every time the brain processes new information, neurons fire, new pathways form, and the malleable brain alters its shape and structure. In recent years, several researchers have posited that it’s possible to consciously direct neuroplasticity to optimize your brain function, improve your work performance, and even influence your team’s performance. Imagine your brain as a colossal power grid. Billions of pathways light up every time you think, feel, or do something. Putting neuroplasticity into action means carving new pathways, while strengthening the best of the existing ones – and not reinforcing the pathways you’d rather avoid. This is captured in an aphorism: “Neurons that fire together, wire together; neurons that fire out of sync, fail to link.” Neuroscientist Dr. Tara Swart, a senior lecturer at MIT and author of bestselling brain bible The Source, recently compared this process to road building. “Think of it as going from a dirt road to a motorway,” Dr. Swart told European CEO. “I could say, ‘I’m going to work on that pathway, which is currently a dirt road. Train your brain to be more productive

1. Feed your brain Your brain makes up only a tiny proportion of your total body weight, but it uses up a quarter of everything you eat. If you want enhanced neural pathways, you’ll need an enhanced diet. According to Ramsden, that means grabbing snacks like walnuts, blueberries, and avocado during the day. Vitamin D and magnesium are top priorities if you want to promote neuroplasticity.

2. Take naps Obviously, a good night’s sleep of between seven and nine hours will always set you up for a better brain day. But a short afternoon nap of around 20 minutes will elevate your neuroplasticity potential even further. A short nap encourages the growth of dendritic spines, which act as crucial connectors between the neurons in your brain.

3. Don’t let the workday linger Like muscle-building, neuroplasticity needs downtime in order to do its work properly. According to Dr. Chinichian, managers should embed and enforce a “close the day” ritual that prioritizes reflection and gratitude for small wins. An end-of-day Slack message saying “Thanks for the great ideas in the brainstorming session today, everyone. See you tomorrow,” can help the team feel valued. Putting a hard stop to the stresses of the day in a way that also boosts endorphins creates perfect conditions for neuroplasticity. Bonus: it also sends the signal that it’s OK to “leave” work and unplug for the evening.

4. Expand your vocabulary Try to learn one new word every day. According to experts, this simple act will spark a multitude of new neural pathways, both visual and auditory. (Give it a few months and it’ll make you unstoppable at Scrabble too).

Chess players have significantly more grey matter in their anterior cingulate cortex than those unfamiliar with en passant and castling.
