Naomi Osaka becomes the first Black female athlete to appear on a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover Naomi Osaka just made history as the first Black female athlete to pose for a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover. Osaka, who will be representing Japan at the 2021 Olympics, was photographed by Yu Tsai for one of three covers for the magazine’s swimsuit issue. She posed in Norma Kamali swimwear and earrings from Beads by Cowrie. “I wouldn’t have thought that I would have been the first one,” Osaka said of being the first Black female athlete on a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover in a conversation with Tyra Banks. Banks was the first Black woman to star on the cover of the magazine alone. “I’m glad that this barrier is being broken,” Osaka told Banks. “I hope there are many, many more people to come, and I’m sure there will be,” she added. Osaka, 23, released her American citizenship in 2019 so she could compete for Japan in the 2021 Olympics.

Joe Biden says getting vaccinated ‘gigantically important’

HiIndia• Newsdesk NATIONAL EDITION | Volume 13 Issue No. 628 JULY 23, 2021 | THE COMMUNITY FIRST | hiindia.com - News Update 24X7 Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna have slammed the Indian tennis association (AITA) for denying the country “a very good shot at a medal” and for “misleading the players, the government, media and everyone else” by stating there is still a chance for Bopanna to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. Bopanna said in a social media post on Monday that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) did not accept any entry request for him and Sumit Nagal, who qualified for the men’s singles event. He said this was in contradiction to AITA pairing him with Nagal for the men’s doubles competition by withdrawing Divij Sharan’s nomination. Bopanna and Sharan were not able to directly secure a place for the men’s doubles event at Tokyo Olympics. AITA Secretary General Anil Dhupar, meanwhile, hit back at Bopanna’s allegations, saying qualification for the Olympics should not have been left at the mercy of withdrawals.

The New Global Weapon for Silencing Journalists

Pegasus uses ‘zero-click attack’ spyware; how does this work? How does it works ? Pegasus, in the very basic form, can infect devices that are connected to the internet. Some updated versions, experts claim, can also infect phones even without the vicitm clicking on any links or messags

WHAT IS PEGASUS

Subramanian Swamy @Swamy39 Strong rumour that this evening IST, Washington Post & London Guardian are publishing a report exposing the hiring of an Israeli firm Pegasus, for tapping phones of Modi’s Cabinet Ministers, RSS leaders, SC judges, & journalists. If I get this confirmed I will publish the list.

Built and marketed by Israeli company NSO, Pegasus is a spyware that infects devices and spies on the victim by transferring data to a master server in an unauthorised manner. The company claims to seel it only to “vetted foreign govts worldwide.

1

Most spyware and stalkerware app disguise themselves as anti-theft app that can be used to track stolen or lost devices. While viruses and malware can detected by antivirus software.spyware and stalkerware app disguise themselves as useful and send out stolen data to central servers without the knowledge of the users

2

How does it infect a device ?

For spyware apps, the easiest method is to disguise the spying code inside the unauthorised versions of premium apps. On the other hand, stalkerware app seek explicit permissions at the time of their installation Such stalkerware app, once installed, hide themselves in the background, from where they continue functioning. Similarly, Pegasus infects phones a n d co m p u te r s o f victims either through vulerabilities in the most commonly used app such as whatsapp, imessage or sms. The software tries to gain”root privilages” so that they can become device admin.

3

773.526.8353 MIDWEST / EASTCOAST

What happens afterwards ? The software can, based on i nstruction from a remote server, automatically turn on the camera and the microphone and look into chats, contacts and data backup. It can also record speech, access the calendar and read SMS-es and emails. The spyware software can continue sending signals to the controlling server till the time it is detected.

The Wire has confirmed the numbers of at least 40 journalists who were either targets or potential targets for surveillance. Forensic analysis was conducted on the phones of seven journalists, of which five showed traces of a successful infection by Pegasus. 1. M.K. Venu: A founding editor of The Wire. His phone was also forensically analysed and traces of Pegasus were found. 2. Sushant Singh: Former Indian Express journalist who writes on national security. After a forensic analysis of his phone, Amnesty arrived at the conclusion that it had been compromised. 3. Siddharth Varadarajan: A founding editor of The Wire, his phone was forensically analysed. The analysis showed that the phone was compromised by Pegasus. 4. Paranjoy Guha Thakurta: Former EPW editor, who no writes for Newsclick. His phone was compromised by Pegasus, forensic analysis revealed. 5. S.N.M. Abdi: Former Outlook journalist, whose phone was compromised according to forensic analysis. 6. Vijaita Singh: The Hindu journalist who covers the home ministry. Forensic analysis of her phone showed evidence of an attempted hack, but no evidence of a successful compromise. 7. Smita Sharma: Former TV18 anchor. Forensic analysis found evidence of an attempted hack but nothing to indicate that her phone was successfully infected. 8. Shishir Gupta: Executive editor at Hindustan Times 9. Around 300 phones belonging to Indian journalists, government officials, rights activists and a wide cross-section of businessmen are believed to have been targeted by Pegasus spyware made by Israeli company NSO which says it sells only to “vetted governments”. The Indian numbers targeted were revealed after a joint global-scale investigation conducted by Indian website The Wire, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Le Monde, Die Zeit and 12 other Arab, Mexican and European news organisations. The news organisations were given a leaked database of numbers by Parisbased media non-profit Forbidden Stories and Amnesty International. The global investigation examined 37 phones of which 10 were Indian to confirm that they had been targeted by spyware. Soon after the story broke simultaneously around the world, Indian journalist Swati Chaturvedi, whose phone is believed to have been tapped, tweeted: “Dear @PMOIndia why did your government put me on an intrusive surveillance list? For committing a crime of doing investigative journalism. Why was Pegasus software introduced on my phone? Pegasus is sold only to governments.” The government has denied any link with the spyware and said, “We have nothing to fear and the government has nothing to hide. We will reply to

Special Report We Care About Journalists, Are Investigating Every Allegation of Misuse, Says NSO Group Chief

The New Global Weapon for Silencing Journalists New Delhi: NSO group cofounder Shalev Hulio has promised to probe any cases of human rights-abuses linked to the use of Pegasus, a pledge that came after a consortium of news organizations reported how customers of the Israel-based spyware maker had deployed the deadly spyware tool against journalists around the world. “Every allegation about misuse of the system is concerning me,” he told the newspaper. “It violates the trust that we give customers. We are investigating every allegation … and if we find that it is true, we will take strong action.” In its latest transparency report, NSO noted that it had terminated five clients since 2016 following investigations of alleged misuse, including one case last year in which Pegasus was misused to “target a protected” individual.

Days After Accusing CJI Gogoi of Sexual Harassment, Staffer Put on List of Potential Snoop Targets New Delhi: Three phone numbers belonging to the Supreme Court staffer who accused former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi of sexual harassment in April 2019 were selected as potential targets for surveillance by an unidentified Indian agency that is a customer of the Israel-based-NSO Group, The Wire can confirm. any query. The news article proves nothing. In fact, previous attempts to link Pegasus with the government have failed,” the government said. The Wire said that the leaked database had numbers of over 40 journalists, three opposition leaders, serving government ministers, current and formers officials of security organisations and “scores of businesspersons”. The Wire itself was heavily targeted. Forensic analysis was carried out on 37 phones globally including 10 from India. Amongst the phones analysed were those belonging to The Wire Editor Siddharth Varadarajan and co-founder Paranjoy Guha Thakurta. “You feel violated. This is an incredible intrusion and journalists should not have to deal with this,” Varadarajan told The Guardian. The forensic analysis is essential to prove that the phones have been infected with Pegasus Spyware. For technical reasons it is easier to analyse if Pegasus software has been used in iPhones than in Android ones. The phone of another journalist, Sushant Singh, who had worked on an investigation into the Rafale deal, was also subjected to forensic analysis

5

and appeared to have had spyware installed on it. Singh told The Wire: “It is a violation of privacy…..Secondly, it compromises a journalist’s ability to report on matters of grave national importance. Other Indian journalists whose names

appear on the list that dates back to 2016 include Shishir Gupta, executive editor of the Hindustan Times; former editorial page editor Prashant Jha; defence correspondent Rahul Singh and Aurangazeb Naqshbandi who covered the Congress. In addition to these names, other leading journalists who appear to have been under surveillance include

Muzamil Jaleel who writes on Kashmir, India Today defence writer Sandeep Unnithan and Vijaita Singh who writes on the Home Ministry for The Hindu. Singh’s phone contained traces of an attempted Pegasus infection, according to The Wire. One phone number on the Pegasus Projects database was earlier registered in the name of a sitting Supreme Court judge, The Wire said. However, it said the judge had given up the number at some point in the last few years. Most of the numbers on the Pegasus database came from 10 countries including India, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Hungary, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, Mexico and Rwanda. Pegasus initially hit the headlines around the world in 2019 after it was reported that 1,400 phones had been targeted using the software. Whatsapp filed a suit against the NSO Group which created the software. Rumours had been circulating all Sunday that a major story was about to break and Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy tweeted, “Strong rumour that this evening Washington Post & London Guardian are publishing a report exposing the hiring of an Israeli firm Pegasus, for tapping phones of Modi’s Cabinet Ministers, RSS leaders, SC judges & journalists.” At an international level, more chillingly, the former fiancée of murdered Saudi journalist and dissident Jamal Khashoggi was found to have been tapped. Two other Turkish officials inquiring into the Khashoggi murder were also tapped. Act and Information Technology Act lays out strict procedures that must be followed for lawful interception.

No state reported deaths due to lack of O2: BJP No deaths due to lack of oxygen have been “specifically reported”, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

Pegasus Project: 14 World Leaders in Leaked Database

The phone numbers on the leaked database include those belonging to at least one king, three presidents and three PMs who are still in office. HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: Telephone numbers linked to least 14 heads of states and governments, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa are among the 50,000 numbers on a leaked database that includes some people whose phones were targeted for hacking by Pegasus spyware. NSO Group, which counts some 36 governments around the world as its customers, denies the database has anything to do with the company, its spyware or its clients. However, a forensic examination of a crosssection of phones by the Pegasus Project – an international media consortium comprising 17 news organisations, including The Wire – found traces of the deadly spyware on 37 phones on the leaked list.

Noting that Opposition-ruled states claimed in courts that there was no death due to shortage of oxygen during the second Covid-19 wave and made similar assertions in their response to the Centre, the BJP on Wednesday hit back at its rivals amid a row over the Modi government’s reply in Parliament on the matter. The government had told Rajya Sabha on Tuesday that no deaths due to lack of oxygen were specifically reported by states and UTs during the second Covid-19 wave, drawing sharp criticism from opposition leaders. Deaths of patients in hospitals due to lack of the life-saving gas were reported from several states during the peak of the second wave in April-May as the demand for medical oxygen zoomed. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra noted that the central government’s reply was based on the figures provided by states and UTs as health is a state subject. No state sent any data about patients dying due to oxygen shortage, he asserted. He accused Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi of the Congress and Arvind Kejriwal of the Aam Aadmi Party, of doing politics on the matter, and said the states where these parties are in power have claimed that no one died there due to lack of oxygen.

“Congress On The Decline, But Still Concerned About Us”: PM’s Attack HiIndia Newsdesk

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the Congress was unable to digest the BJP in power and had not come out of its coma even after its defeat in Assam, Bengal and Kerala, as he tackled opposition attacks on his government’s Covid handling at a party meeting. Addressing a weekly meeting of BJP MPs, PM Modi called the Congress’s conduct “irresponsible and unfortunate” and urged his party to take facts about the government’s work to the people, so that “the opposition’s lies didn’t fill the vacuum.” The Prime Minister “expressed concern” that the Congress’s “sense of entitlement” was preventing the party from doing their job as opposition, according to a leader who attended the meeting. “Congress still has sense of entitlement that it has ruled the country for 60 years and it is because of this that they haven’t been able to digest the fact that people have chosen us. As an opposition, they should take up issues of people’s welfare strongly which they aren’t doing,” the Prime Minister was quoted as saying. The Congress, he said, was deliberately creating a negative atmosphere in the country, when in reality there is no shortage of vaccines.

Bid to malign India, aap chronology samajhiye, says Amit Shah HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: Actor Shilpa Shetty’s husband, businessman Raj Kundra has been arrested by the Mumbai police over a case involving pornographic films. The Mumbai Police said they arrested Mr Kundra on Monday “as he appears to be the key conspirator of this”. The police also said they have “sufficient evidence” against him, though they added that further investigations are in progress. The case -- involving creation of pornographic films and publishing them through some apps -- was registered with the Mumbai Crime Branch in February this year.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah led the charge as the government Monday denounced reports that Pegasus spyware could have been used to snoop on journalists, politicians and activists, calling it an attempt “to malign Indian democracy and its well established institutions”. Both Shah and Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw hinted that the reports were timed to coincide with the start of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Addressing Parliament amidst Opposition sloganeering, Vaishnaw said, “A highly sensational story was published by a web portal yesterday night. Many over-the-top allegations have been made around this story. The press reports have appeared a day before the Monsoon Session. This cannot be a coincidence.” Shah released a statement, where attacking the Opposition for disrupting Parliament and raising the issue of Pegasus, he said, “In what seemed like perfect cue, late last evening we saw a report which has been amplified by a few sections with only one aim — to do whatever is possible and humiliate India at the world stage, peddle the same old narratives about our nation and derail India’s development trajectory.”

Both Amit Shah and Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw hinted that the Project Pegasus reports were timed to coincide with the start of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Mr Scindia, who delivered Madhya Pradesh to the BJP last year after ditching the Congress along with a large number of MLAs, recently joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet. Jitin Prasada, another member of Mr Gandhi’s close circle, quit in June and is likely to play a significant part in the BJP’s plans for Uttar Pradesh, where elections will take place next year. Mr Gandhi also appeared to direct some of his comments at dissenters in the Congress. Many of them are part of the so-called G-23 or group of 23 who had written to Congress president Sonia Gandhi complaining about a leadership drift following a series of poll defeats, and suggesting a full-time, visible leadership and collective decision-making.

NEWS BREIF Indians to benefit from Canada’s family reunification programme

HiIndia Newsdesk Toronto,: A record number of 40,000 immigrant families will be allowed to sponsor their parents and grandparents to bring them to Canada in 2021. This means 30,000 additional applications will be accepted as against the annual intake of 10,000 under the Parents and Grandparents Programme (PGP), which is ai med at family reunification. Since IndoCanadians are one of the fastest growing communities in Canada, they will be the major beneficiaries of the programme. Applications can be submitted online over a two-week period, starting September 20. Using the random selection process, those whose applications are accepted would be allowed to bring their parents and grandparents to Canada. Since the sponsors have to show a certain minimum income requirement, the Canadian government has allowed them to include state benefits received during the Covid lockdown towards their income. This will ensure that applicants are not penalised for lost income during the pandemic. Unveiling the programme, Canadian Immigration Minister Marco E.L. Mendicino said, “The importance of family has never been clearer than during the pandemic. That is why we are delivering on our commitment to help more families reunite in Canada.

Pegasus: Princess Latifa and Princess Haya Olympics opening ceremony numbers ‘among leaks’ director sacked for Holocaust joke

image captionA photo of Kentaro Kobayashi is held up in 2019 by Tokyo 2020 organisers

HiIndia Newsdesk Phone numbers used by two Dubai princesses have reportedly been found as part of an investigation into the phone hacking spyware known as Pegasus. Princess Latifa is the daughter of the ruler of Dubai, and Princess Haya Bint al-Hussain is his former wife. Princess Haya meanwhile fled Dubai in 2019 saying she feared for her life. The UAE has denied both women’s allegations. Their numbers are apparently on a list of some 50,000 phone numbers of people believed to be of interest to clients of Israeli-based firm NSO Group. NSO has denied any wrongdoing. It says the software is intended for use against criminals and terrorists, and is made available only to military, law enforcement and intelligence agencies with good human rights records.

HiIndia Newsdesk The show director of the Olympics opening ceremony has been dismissed, one day before the event is due to be held. Footage of Kentaro Kobayashi from the 1990s recently emerged in which he seems to be making jokes

about the Holocaust. Japan’s Olympic chief Seiko Hashimoto said the video ridiculed “painful facts of history”. The dismissal is the latest in a string of scandals to hit the Games. It comes days after a composer quit the team creating the ceremony after it emerged he had bullied classmates with disabilities at school. In March, creative chief Hiroshi Sasaki quit after suggesting that plus-size comedian Naomi Watanabe could appear as an “Olympig”. He later apologised. And in February, Yoshiro Mori was forced to step down as the head of the organising committee after he made remarks about women that were criticised as “inappropriate”.

South African firm to make Pfizer vaccine, first in Africa

HiIndia Newsdesk A South African firm will begin producing the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine, the first time that the shot will be produced in Africa, Pfizer announced Wednesday. The Biovac Institute based in Cape Town will manufacture the vaccine for distribution across Africa, a move that should help address the continent’s desperate need for more vaccine doses amid a recent surge of cases. Biovac will receive large batch ingredients for the vaccine from Europe and will blend the components, put them in vials and package them for distribution. The production will begin in 2022 with a goal of reaching more than 100 million finished doses annually.

Israel’s National Security Council US and Germany reach deal on looking into Pegasus controversy controversial Russian gas pipeline

HiIndia Newsdesk Israel has set up a senior inter-ministerial team to look into growing allegations that spyware sold by an Israeli cyber firm has been abused on a global scale, an Israeli source said on Wednesday, while adding that an export review was unlikely. The team is headed by Israel’s National Security Council, which answers to Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and has broader areas of expertise than the Defence Ministry, which oversees exports of NSO Group’s Pegasus software, the source said. “This event is beyond the Defence Ministry purview,” the source said, referring to potential diplomatic blowback after prominent media reports this week of suspected abuses of Pegasus in France, Mexico, India, Morocco and Iraq.

HiIndia Newsdesk The US says it has reached a deal with Germany to prevent Russia from using its Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline as political leverage over Europe. The near-complete 1,230km (764 miles) pipeline under the Baltic Sea will double Russian gas exports to Germany. US official Victoria Nuland said it was “a bad pipeline”, but said the deal envisaged sanctions against Moscow if it tried to blackmail Ukraine. Ukraine says the Nord Stream 2 pipeline threatens its security. The country has been fighting Russian-backed separatists in the east since 2014. Russia also annexed the Crimea peninsula from Ukraine in 2014. Kyiv fears a full-scale Russian invasion once Nord Stream 2 is fully operational. Ukraine also stands to lose about $3bn (£2.2bn) a year in gas transit fees.

No murder politics in CM Yediyurappa invites all Telangana: Kamalakar party legislators for dinner HiIndia Newsdesk Karimnagar: BC Welfare Minister Gangula Kamalakar on Tuesday urged the State government to order a probe into BJP leader Eatala Rajender’s allegation that there was a conspiracy to eliminate him. The Minister appealed to Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, Director General of Police M Mahender Reddy and Karimnagar Police Commissioner VB Kamalasan Reddy to take immediate action since the allegations were aimed at ultimately blaming the State government. “Former naxals, who reportedly informed Rajender about the conspiracy, should be taken into custody immediately and details extracted from them,” Kamalakar said at a media conference here. Stating that there were only political suicides in Telangana, he said the practice of murder politics and physical attacks does not exist in the State. “It is the responsibility of the State government to protect Rajender. I wish him a long life. I would much rather sacrifice my life to protect his life,” Kamalakar said,

Visiting Maldives again: Remember these Covid guidelines before planning a trip

O

ne of the most favoured international destinations for tourists — especially in the pandemic, wherein travelling to foreign countries has slowed and almost stopped — Maldives reopened for visitors from India on July 15. It had previously suspended the entry of South Asian travellers, effective May 13, when the second wave was at its peak. Keep in mind, however, that tourists may be accommodated in guesthouses at local islands only after July 30, 2021. Now, after almost two months, the restrictions have been eased a bit, and tourists will be issued a visa on-arrival. Here are some important things to keep in mind: * In order to be able to visit the island country, you must be able to show a confirmation of your hotel reservation at the airport. * All tourists — including those who have received both the doses of their Covid vaccine — must produce a negative RT-PCR test report, with samples taken at least 48 hours and at most 72 hours, prior to departure. * In addition, you will also need to submit an online health declaration form on the Maldives

immigration portal 24 hours before your arrival. * Right now, Indian tourists are not allowed to visit Greater Male, because of its dense local population. * They can, however, split their stay between hotels. But, it is mandatory that the facilities meet government guidelines and have approvals from the Ministry of Tourism in Maldives. Additionally, tourists are required to inform the facilities about their plans to spend a few days at another resort. * While visitors are not required to quarantine on arrival, if they — or a person in their group — show Covid symptoms, they will have to take an RT-PCR test and quarantine at a resort or a transit facility until the reports arrive. The cost of the accommodation may have to be borne by them. * Those travelling to Maldives from India can be tourists, Maldives nationals, expatriates and their dependents holding a work permit. And those who travel from Maldives back to India must be Indian nationals, and those with OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cardholders holding Maldivian passports. This category also includes foreigners (including diplomats) who hold a valid visa issued by an Indian Mission under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

s a physician, keeping ahead of health and wellness trends means staying informed so you can understand what’s at stake and where the claims—which often go unchecked in the media—are supported by evidence. Here are four health and wellness trends coming down the pike in 2021.

Top health and wellness trends for 2021

Boosting immunity

With new coronavirus variants cropping up, and a challenging vaccine rollout, it looks like the pandemic isn’t going anywhere soon, according to experts. That’s why many are embracing wellness strategies that claim to boost immunity—a trend that is expected to continue into 2021 and beyond. According to MarketResearch.com, the onset of COVID-19 stimulated demand for immune supplements, with more than 50% of consumers increasing their consumption levels last year. Herbal extracts, the fastest-growing ingredients in this area, are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 12% through 2025. While supplements are widely used by Americans, and sales may indeed increase, it’s unlikely that vitamins and supplements will have much effect on our immune systems. According to an article in JAMA Internal Medicine, these products “often advertise health benefits, such as improved thinking, better heart health, and a stronger immune system…However, these claims have not been supported by evidence from medical research.” And although some supplements may have proven health benefits for certain conditions, others can be dangerous for otherwise healthy individuals and should be avoided.

Refusing boozing

While there aren’t many surefire ways to boost your immune system, there are many proven ways to bring it to its knees. Chief among them: drinking alcohol, according to Alcohol Research: Current Reviews. The early months of the pandemic brought a huge spike in alcohol consumption, with Nielsen reporting a 54% increase in national sales of alcohol for the week ending March 21, 2020, compared with the same week the year prior. The WHO quickly warned

P

eople have an almost universal desire to not only live longer, but to have the years they add to their lives be healthy, vibrant, and fulfilling. A big part of making that happen is maintaining your physical fitness, particularly your strength. Muscle loss is a significant driver in decreasing life quality as you age. If you can’t pick heavy things off the floor, or get yourself off the floor, your ability to navigate life diminishes, and along with it, your sense of agency. Solution: keep on lifting heavy things and eating plenty of protein even as you get older.

1. Engage in Face-toFace Conversations: “interacting with others is about the most complex human activity we can do. It’s more complex than brain surgery, than being a rocket scientist, than solving Sudoku or crossword puzzles. Interacting in a meaningful way with real live people,

deteriorating mental health during the pandemic. From January through September 2020, the number of people who took MHA’s anxiety screenings increased by 93% over the previous year, with the rate of people with moderate to severe symptoms of anxiety remaining higher than rates prior to the pandemic. In 2020, many people were granted extra time and perspective with which to examine their habits, relationships, careers, and overall life path. In 2021, those insights may fuel greater prioritization of mental well-being. Food and beverage companies will likely respond by marketing more products that contain stress-reducing and sleepimproving ingredients, like antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, fiber, healthy fats, and other bioactive compounds like probiotics. Of course, holistic mental health is about much more than diet, so expect many to cultivate an active lifestyle, healthy relationships, and fulfilling hobbies this year.

Eating local

This year, new innovations, products, and scientific—or, in some cases, unscientific—developments will change the way people eat and behave, for better or worse. Of course, that’s nothing new. Long before the days of snake oil peddling, we humans have fallen for, and occasionally benefited from, dubious health products and claims. that alcohol use during the pandemic may potentially exacerbate health concerns and risk-taking behaviors. And, there’s no question about it, people are drinking more alcohol in these times. The CDC, in newly updated guidance on COVID-19 and alcohol use, offers these takeaways: • Drinking alcohol does not protect you from COVID-19. • Drinking alcohol weakens your body’s ability to fight infections, increasing the risk of complications and making it harder to get better if you are sick. • Alcohol use can increase the risk of acute respiratory distress syndrome and pneumonia, which are sometimes associated with COVID-19. Indeed, the research backs this up, according to the aforementioned article in Alcohol Research: Current

Reviews, citing studies showing that drinking increases susceptibility to pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), sepsis, alcoholic liver disease, and certain cancers, as well as causing slower and less complete recovery from infection. And if that’s not enough, alcohol causes a variety of other unsavory health risks.

Prioritizing mental health

For the few who made it through 2020 without encountering any mental health hurdles, good on you! For the rest of us, the year will be remembered as a devil’s brew of uncertainty, political upheaval, divisiveness, financial insecurity, isolation, and a climbing burden of disease and death. According to a 2020 report from Mental Health America (MHA), more people are facing

2 Keys to Staying Mentally Sharp as You Age

Pandemic shutdowns shrank the world. Quickly, face-to-face meetings were limited to whoever lived in our households and the few local retailers we needed to keep food on our plates— like local grocery stores, restaurants, and farmers’ markets. According to Kantar’s COVID-19 barometer, which measures people’s feelings about the pandemic and the future, community bonds and localism continue to gain momentum, with 69% globally saying that they are supporting local shops and 52% reporting paying increased attention to product origins. The report noted that “these protectionist inclinations seem to be more about economic support of neighbors and staying safe by shopping close to home.” While supporting the local economy and reducing the environmental impact of food production, storage, and transportation are admirable goals, consuming local foods may also bode well for health—unless your “usual” is a cheeseburger from the joint down the street. This is especially true if those foods originate from the garden in your own backyard—the pandemic has apparently led to a boom in gardening with American seed companies scrambling to keep up. not necessarily over the phone or Skype, that’s demanding, and that keeps the brain active

2. Navigate Complex Physical Environments

Another way we can stay mentally sharp, while simultaneously staying physically agile, is to engage with varied, natural environments. Walking on uneven ground, crawling under a low rock hanging, and balancing on a log are surprisingly nuanced physical movements, that involve surprisingly nuanced mental processes. As you make your way over more demanding terrain, your brain sends signals to your body, making lightning-fast modifications to your physical position so you don’t fall on your face. At the same time, the physical movements you make send signals back to your brain. In Successful Aging, Levitin describes this two-way dynamic, which creates a virtuous loop of neural stimulation:

Bopanna, Sania Mirza slam Indian tennis body over lost medal chance

HiIndia Newsdesk Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna have slammed the Indian tennis association (AITA) for denying the country “a very good shot at a medal” and for “misleading the players, the government, media and everyone else” by stating there is still a chance for Bopanna to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

Public Health Officials Announce 2,945 New Cases of Coronavirus Disease in Illinois Over the Past Week

HiIndia Newsdesk CHICAGO, IL – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today reported 2,945 new confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 53 additional CHICAGO, IL – We all know how we endured 2020 as the year, one that wreaked havoc worldwide due to the SARS-CoV-19 pandemic. While the vaccines were in clinical trials, the world waited with bated breath. Through different scientific platforms, multiple vaccines got approved all over and folks started getting vaccinated which eased some tensions a few months ago. The summer of 2021 has seen a setback especially because vaccine hesitancy has stymied some of our success. An average number of new cases of SARS-CoV-19 infections in Illinois have doubled in the first half of July 2021. About 186 million Americans have received at least one jab, but another potentially eligible 90 million Americans have not received it yet. One message that has been sent to folks living in the USA is that these vaccinations are not a punishment but an act of prevention. We all know that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Hospitalizations are also rising and patients are younger, sicker and mostly unvaccinated in the current uptick of cases. This is largely driven by the Delta variant, also known as B.1.617.2. At the present time, the Delta variant is the dominant strain in the United States and is estimated to be 40%-80% more infectious than the Alpha variant. Experts in the field of infectious disease

deaths since reporting last Friday, July 2, 2021. More than 72% of Illinois adults have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose and 57% of Illinois adults are fully vaccinated, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 1,395,497 cases, including 23,297 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years. Since reporting on Friday, July 2, 2021, laboratories have reported 195,694 specimens for a total of 26,064,549. As of last night, 430 individuals in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 91 patients were in the ICU and 35 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.

Delta Variant Covid

BY DR. NILESH D. MEHTA

Experts in the field of infectious disease including Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have warned that one week average of coronavirus infections soared nearly 70 percent. This clearly is alarming news including Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention, have warned that one week average of coronavirus infections soared nearly 70 percent. This clearly is alarming news. As a result of this sudden surge in cases, hospitalizations have also increased in the last week as well. Rochelle Walensky called this new wave as “ a pandemic of the unvaccinated”. As a means through this column in hiINDiA, I urge our readers who are unvaccinated to kindly get your vaccination jabs. Based on science and prior experiences with vaccines, it is clear that the sooner we get the unvaccinated folks vaccinated, the impact of this pandemic will continue to lessen and all of us can head towards some sense of long lasting normalcy. Kindly speak to your friends, relatives, neighbors either in person or through social media and spread the word on getting vaccinated. Yes, there are some genuine concerns raised about the potential side effects of vaccines. But, we all need to collectively look at the “big picture” which will clearly get brighter if we get our vaccinations. In life, we always tend to assess risks v benefits in the actions we take and in the case of this pandemic, there is no doubt that the benefits far outweigh the risks associated with vaccinations.

Applicants for Change of Status to F-1 Student No Longer Need to Submit Subsequent Applications to ‘Bridge the Gap’ HiIndia Newsdesk WA S H I N G T O N , D C – U. S . Citizenship and Immigration Services today announced new policy guidance that eliminates the need for individuals who have applied for a change of status (COS) to F-1 student to apply to change or extend their nonimmigrant status while their initial F-1 COS application is pending. Under the previous policy, applicants needed to maintain status up to 30 days before the program start date listed on their Form I-20, Certificate for Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status, which required them to file extensions, or an initial COS and subsequent extensions ensuring that they would not have a “gap” in status.

To prevent a “gap” in status, USCIS will grant the change of status to F-1 effective

Nonimmigrant Status. If we approve an application more than 30 days before the student’s program start date, the student must ensure they do not violate their F-1 status during that time. An example of a violation would be engaging in employment, including on-campus employment, more than 30 days before the program start date as listed on their Form I-20. The new policy will reduce workloads and costs for both the applicants and USCIS. USCIS is in the process of revising the Form I-539 instructions to reflect these changes. CHICAGO, IL – Hindus around the world are seeking an apology from Mondelēz International Inc., one of the world’s largest snacks companies” headquartered in Chicago, for non-disclosure of beef in some of its products. There is also a call for an immediate recall of all such items. Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, stated that some of the products of the Mondelēz brands—Cadbury, Alpen Gold, Freia, Maynards Bassett’s, Milka, etc.—, but source of gelatin was not mentioned under the “Ingredients” on packages/boxes; which might be beef, pork, etc. Consumption of beef is highly conflicting to Hindu beliefs. Zed also urged Mondelēz CEO Dirk Van de Put to recall all food items containing gelatin were source of gelatin was not clearly mentioned.
