US aims at helping India develop its own defense industrial base: Pentagon
Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 bill wins final approval in House
4
HiIndia Newsdesk The Biden administration is looking at deepening its military and technical cooperation with India by not only providing it with arms and equipment, but also helping New Delhi develop its own defense industrial base, a senior Pentagon official told lawmakers here on Wednesday. “We are looking to … deepen our militarytechnical cooperation with India that is based on providing them arms and equipment so we can build interoperable forces and capabilities and work with India developing its own defense industrial base so that India is able to produce equipment to service their needs and to be able to work with us and others around the region,”
"I think we all agree that it needs to be a better partner and a counterweight to China, so what is the Biden administration plan to build a stronger partnership with India both economically and militarily," Congressman Lamborn asked.
US Senate confirms Fudge to lead housing agency, Regan for EPA

Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs David Helvey told lawmakers. India is a real partner, a rising partner of the United States, Helvey said responding to a question from Congressman Doug Lamborn during a Congressional hearing on Indo-Pacific by the House Armed Services Committee. “We have a unique designation with India; it’s called a major defense partner,” he said. “I think we all agree that it needs to be a better partner and a counterweight to China, so what is the Biden administration plan to build a stronger partnership with India both economically and militarily,” Congressman Lamborn asked.
Warren Buffett finally joins exclusive $100bn club HiIndia Newsdesk
HiIndia Newsdesk The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Ohio Rep Marcia Fudge to head the Department of Housing and Urban Development and North Carolina regulator Michael Regan to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, picking up the pace for confirmations in President Joe Biden’s Cabinet. Fudge, a veteran lawmaker, will lead the housing agency agency just as Congress has passed new benefits for renters and homeowners who have suffered economic losses amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Warren Buffett has finally joined the exclusive $100bn (£72bn) club that includes Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates. The 90-year-old is the chairman of investment firm Berkshire Hathaway, which has seen its shares rise to a record level this year. On Wednesday his net worth edged above $100bn for the first time. Regarded as the world's most successful investor, Mr Buffett has given away billions of his wealth to charity. While Mr Buffett has been a fixture at the top of the world's wealth rankings for decades, his wealth hasn't topped $100bn until now. One reason is his sizeable charitable donations - he has given away more than $37bn in Berkshire Hathaway stock since 2006. Mr Buffett is a co-founder of the Giving Pledge, a campaign to encourage billionaire philanthropy. Mackenzie Scott, ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has also signed up to the pledge and gave away more than $4bn of her fortune in just four months last year.
U.S. imposes sanctions on children of Myanmar military leader, companies HiIndia Newsdesk
The United States on Wednesday imposed sanctions on two children of Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing and six companies they control in response to the military’s February 1 coup and the killing of protesters since the takeover. The U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement it blacklisted Aung Pyae Sone and Khin Thiri Thet Mon, the adult children of Myanmar’s commander in chief who led the coup and installed himself as head of the ruling State Administration Council. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned more punitive actions could follow, and condemned the detention of over 1,700 people and attacks by Myanmar’s security forces against unarmed protesters that he said have killed at least 53 people. “We will not hesitate to take further action against those who instigate violence and
Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing
suppress the will of the people,” Blinken said in a statement. The military has brushed off condemnation of its actions, as it has in past periods of
army rule when outbreaks of protest were forcibly repressed. Wednesday’s move – the latest in a series of punitive actions taken by Washington against Myanmar’s military over the coup – essentially freezes any U.S. assets of those blacklisted and generally bars Americans from dealing with them. Campaign group Justice for Myanmar said in January that Min Aung Hlaing, who has been commander in chief since 2011, has “abused his power to benefit his family, who have profited from their access to state resources and the military’s total impunity.” The six Myanmar companies blacklisted by Washington include A&M Mahar, which is controlled by Aung Pyae Sone, the general’s son. Justice for Myanmar said A&M offers foreign pharmaceutical companies access to Myanmar’s market by obtaining approvals from Myanmar’s Food and Drug Administration.
HiIndia Newsdesk The U.S. House of Representatives gave final approval on Wednesday to one of the largest economic stimulus measures in American history, a sweeping $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill that gives President Joe Biden his first major victory in office. The measure provides $400 billion for $1,400 direct payments to most Americans, $350 billion in aid to state and local governments, an expansion of the child tax credit and increased funding for vaccine distribution. Forecasters expect it to supercharge the U.S. economic recovery.
US will share COVID-19 vaccine if it has surplus: Joe Biden
HiIndia Newsdesk The United States will share the COVID-19 vaccine with the rest of the world if it has a surplus, US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday. “If we have a surplus, we are going to share it with the rest of the world. We have already decided we are going to work with the outfit COVAX. We’ve committed USD 4 billion to help get the funding for more vaccines around the world,” he told reporters at the White House.
Google reviewing Myanmar army ads HiIndia Newsdesk Google and Rakuten-owned messaging app Viber said on Wednesday they were reviewing recent advertisements run by a Myanmar military-backed telecommunications firm following the February 1 coup. The move comes as activists called on the technology giants to restrict access to the company’s services after dozens of deaths following weeks of protests against the military’s seizure of power. Justice for Myanmar, an advocacy group looking at the army’s business interests, said on Wednesday it had found that Google and Viber were running new advertisements for Mytel, a Myanmar telecoms company partially owned by the army, following a ban by Facebook.

It will now go to the Senate for a final vote, which President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's party is confident will pass. This would make Mexico one of the world's largest regulated markets for cannabis. Mexico has struggled with a bloody war against powerful drug cartels, with violence killing thousands yearly. Lawmakers voted in favour of the bill by 316 votes to 129. It had already been approved in the Senate in November but another vote is needed following some alterations by the lower house. The legislation would let users with a permit carry up to 28g and grow as many as eight plants at home for personal use. At present, it is illegal to carry more than five grams. It would also allow for other licences for the cultivation, transformation, research and export or import of cannabis. Mr López Obrador has argued that the bill could help tackle the country's powerful drug cartels. One lawmaker from his Morena party told AFP news agency that the law would help to achieve peace.

HiIndia Newsdesk “A series of events appear and create crisis situations or threats against our space infrastructure, but not only this,” Friedling told reporters from the Space Command headquarters in Toulouse in southwest France. HiIndia Newsdesk Hawaii governor David Ige declared an emergency in the US state after heavy rains brought floods, landslides and fear of dam failures, and authorities ordered the evacuation of several thousand people from communities threatened by rising waters. The move came after a dam overflowed on the island of Maui, forcing evacuations and destroying homes, with the dam’s “unsatisfactory” condition leading to it being scheduled for removal this year, the land department has said. “The emergency proclamation makes state general funds available that can be used quickly and efficiently to help those impacted by the severe weather,” Ige said on Tuesday. Poor weather was expected to run until Friday, he added, and flood advisories stayed in place for a second day. The emergency declaration covers the counties of Hawaii, Maui, Kalawao, O’ahu and Kaua’i, the governor’s office said in a statement, while the disaster relief period runs until May 8. The Honolulu Department of Emergency Management directed people to leave Haleiwa, a community of a few thousand people to the north of state capital Honolulu. Hawaii News Now reported that two people were swept away in raging waters.

Pakistan has more talent, can’t compare with Indian players: Abdul Razzaq
The Virat Kohli vs Babar Azam debate refuses to die
HiIndia Newsdesk Virat Kohli vs Babar Azam is a debate that refuses to die and has become one of the biggest cricketing discussions in recent times. Several former cricketers have weighed in on the debate and the latest to add to the topic is former Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq, who believes that it is wrong to compare the two. According to Razzaq, Pakistan has produced more talented players and hence it would be wrong to compare them with their arch-rivals. If you look at our history, we have so many great players who we can draw comparisons with like Mohammad Yousaf, Inzamamul Haq, Saeed Anwar, Javed Miandad, Zaheer Abbas and Ijaz Ahmed,” said Razzaq. “Virat Kohli and Babar Azam are completely different players. If we want to compare the two, then it’s important to hold matches between Pakistan and India and then judge who is a better player,” he added.

Tokyo Olympics to be staged without foreign spectators : Report HiIndia Newsdesk
Novak Djokovic breaks Roger With help from Ali and Rocky, Manish Kaushik defeats fear, Federer’s record for most wins gold weeks as ATP No. 1
Novak Djokovic surpassed Roger Federer for the most weeks at No. 1 in the ATP rankings on Monday. Djokovic is in his 311th week in the top spot, one more than Federer has spent there. “Big day today,” Djokovic tweeted Monday. The 33-year-old from Serbia first reached No. 1 on July 4, 2011, a day after he won Wimbledon for the first time by beating top-ranked Rafael Nadal in the final. Djokovic’s ascent represented the first time in nearly 7 1/2 years that a man other than Federer or Nadal was No. 1. “Any athlete in the world dreams of being No. 1 of the world. This is something that gives us a lot of motivation,” Djokovic said back then, when the ATP marked the occasion by presenting him with a cake shaped like the numeral “1” in the red, blue and white colors of Serbia’s flag. “So finally, when you really do it, and when you know that you’re the best, it’s just an amazing achievement.”

HiIndia Newsdesk Manish Kaushik was physically ready to rejoin the camp after the surgery on his right bicep. But there was a mental block, and coaches CA Kuttappa and Santiago Nieva could sense the fear. The coaches had a sit-down with the 25-yearold, who opened up over the next few sparring sessions. “The injury meant that I had a mental block in terms of international competition as well as fear of injuring the bicep again initially,” says the 25-year-old. “But once the coaches and I realised that I was playing without the fear, it was about executing the plans in Spain.” The plans paid off as the light-welterweight boxer struck gold at the Boxam International Tournament in Spain in his return to competition in over a year. “To have wins against boxers like world number four Safiullin Zakir and other European boxers in Spain has put me in a perfect mental shape ahead of the Olympics,” Kaushik said.
The huge financial windfall that comes with an IPL contract can’t be ignored, admitted Jos Buttler as the England cricketer on Tuesday asserted that the ECB never gave him the option of skipping the popular T20 League to be available for the Test series against New Zealand. Buttler has been in the eye of storm for going home after the first Test against India. He is now back in the country for three months to compete in the white ball series and will stay till the end of Rajasthan Royals’ IPL campaign. The British media grilled Buttler on players in all likelihood skipping the Test series against New Zealand starting June 2 if their franchises get to the play-offs starting in last week of May. “No nothing of that sort (was discussed with me) and I don’t know about other players. I think an agreement about participation in IPL was in place well before the New Zealand Test series was announced,” Buttler said during a media conference.
You cannot belong to team if you don’t perform your best everyday: Jhulan Goswami Goswami, who is 38, is the highest wicket-taker in women’s ODIs with 231 scalps. On Tuesday she claimed 4 for 42 to set up India’s nine-wicket win over South Africa in the second ODI, helping the side level the five-match series 1-1. “Representing India is the biggest motivation for me. I don’t think you have to look elsewhere for motivation,” Goswami said during the post-match interaction. “You cannot belong to the team if you don’t perform your best everyday. It’s important for us to maintain our fitness and come out strong on the field. It’s not going to be easy.”
How the English cookie crumbled in Test series Rishabh Pant smashing it all around Ahmedabad while Jos Buttler — an England player capable of doing the same thing — is sitting in a hotel room in the same city, being rested ahead of the white-ball matches, just doesn’t look right,” former England captain Nasser Hussain
England’s rotation policy has copped severe criticism after their 1-3 Test series loss in India, with players being accused of giving priority to the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) over the traditional five-day format. One of the ways mooted to ensure that cricketers always put country first is to hit them where it hurts the most – their pockets. Legendary opener Geoffrey Boycott has asked the ECB to stop treating its players in a “namby-pamby way” and ensure money is docked if they put IPL above national duty. “England messed up with a rotation policy in India and must stop treating players in a namby-pamby way,” Boycott wrote. Boycott, though, didn’t have much sympathy for cricketers who find the amount of international cricket on their plate too much.
“If players want to go home for a break from England duty, dock their money. Better still, don’t select them unless they can agree to be available for a whole series,” he wrote. Boycott pointed out that hardly any player chooses to skip the IPL complaining of too much cricket. “Players seem to forget the IPL would not come calling for them if they had not performed for England first. So, they owe a debt of gratitude and loyalty to put their country first. I would never stop them from earning that but not by missing games for England to do it,” he wrote in his column, before adding: “Players leave England’s bio-secure bubble over mental health issues. But I bet you will not see any of our players leaving the IPL because they miss their wife, girlfriend or kids.”

not responding to the demand for probe through Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the brutal murder of advocates, Vaman Rao and his wife Nagamani, in Peddapalli on February 17. He said CM KCR has turned so insensitive that he did not condemn the murder of a lawyer couple. Since the accused persons in the murder case are reportedly close to the Chief Minister, the local police was not carrying out the investigation in an appropriate manner. Uttam Kumar Reddy reiterated the allegations that the murders was the result of a larger conspiracy hatched by TRS-backed sand mafia and these murders were directly to the custodial death of of a Dalit, Seelam Rangaiah, in Manthani police station of Ramagundam Police Commissionerate. He said Vaman Rao and Nagamani were eliminated to hush up many other illegal activities being carried out with the backing of ruling party leaders. He said that KCR Government has handed over the control of the entire Telangana to ‘sand, land, mine and wines’ mafia. The TPCC Chief said that the Congress party has already met Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundarajan seeking a court-monitored CBI probe into the murders.

GUJARAT HAS PROVEN THAT DEVEL CAN BE ACHIEVED THROUGH SUSTA PRACTICES” CHIEF MINISTER VIJAY
I would like to acknowledge that not only Gujarat but the entire nation has unitedly fought the Covid-19 glo we Indians have collectively succeeded in curbing the impact of Covid-19. As far as Gujarat’s position durin we were well prepared, both at the administrative and social level. By Hi India Staff Gandhinagar, Gujarat:
G
ujarat has proven that development can be achieved through sustainable practices even as it has managed to fend off the Covid-19 pandemic with some efficient planning, the state’s Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has said.
In a special interview with Hi India, the chief minister said, “We, as a state, were proactive in taking precautionary measures, even before the Central government announced the guidelines. We encouraged and guided people to maintain social distancing through the “Namaste Gujarat” campaign. We also started the required screening process for all international travellers and tourists entering the state.” While acknowledging that the state’s economy has suffered a setback like the rest of the country and the world because of the pandemic, he said, “Gujarat regained its economic pace in a very short period of time. “Aatma-nirbhar Gujarat” package of Rs. 14,000 crore (140 billion rupees) and introduction of revised industrial policy shows our dedication to uplift the industries of Gujarat. I am very pleased to share that during an interactive session with industries on New Industrial Policy 2020, in just one session, we received investment commitments for over Rs. 10,500 crore (105 billion rupees).” Excerpts from Hi India’s interview with Chief Minister Rupani: Hi India: Give us a broad overview of how Gujarat has handled the COVID-19 pandemic? Chief Minister: First of all, I would like to acknowledge that not only Gujarat but the entire nation has unitedly fought the Covid-19 global pandemic, which is why we Indians have collectively succeeded in curbing the impact of Covid-19. As far as Gujarat’s position during this pandemic is concerned, we were well prepared, both at the administrative and social level. We, as a state, were
proactive in taking precautionary measures, even before the Central government announced the guidelines. We encouraged and guided people to maintain social distancing through the “Namaste Gujarat” campaign. We also started the required screening process for all international travellers and tourists entering the state. Furthermore, we strategically used necessary resources and put out best efforts in order to cautiously fight against Covid-19 and restrict the spread of infection. I am happy to share that Gujarat was the first state in India to come up with a dedicated COVID-19 hospital. Our next step after screening travellers was to follow a PPP model to tackle rising cases. We reserved 50% beds in private hospitals across Gujarat so as to bolster and prepare our medical infrastructure for the growing number of positive cases. We have more than 50 thousand beds available across the state. For infection control, we followed a strict tracking, testing and treatment approach, which is popularly known as 3T strategy. Also, we adopted technology during the pandemic to strengthen our 3T technology. As a result, “ITIHAS” and “Aarogya Setu”, drones and CCTV surveillance systems were deployed to track the infected and curb the spread of infection During the lockdown, the technique that helped me the most at the administrative as well as at the operational level was the CM Dashboard. The Dashboard served as an easy, efficient and quick medium to reach out to the citizens. I interacted with COVID-19 warriors, COVID-19 patients, district officials, police personnel and all others who were on the frontline. Based on the feedback received from these people, I instructed my officials to ensure that everyone is at ease in terms of the necessary supply of items and related facilities. With the passage of time, the nature of challenges and problems changed. To handle it more effectively, we appointed an expert committee of 8 renowned doctors for strategic and medical insights about the virus and
consequent infection so as to devise effective methods to stall the spread of infection and provide treatment to all the infected patients in the state. We also initiated the very unique Dhanvantari Rath during that time. The raths were lauded by the World Health Organisation and the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India. We deployed more than 1500 Dhanvantari Raths for providing primary healthcare treatment to people in Red Zones. More than 12.5 million people availed primary healthcare through them. It is important to note here that Ahmedabad was once among the topmost cities with COVID-19 cases. However, after introducing Dhanvantari Raths, we could reduce the number of cases within a couple of months due to the availability of primary health care in quarantined areas as well. While this was on the health and medical front, we ensured that economically backward sections in the society and migrant labourers had access to essential supplies during the lockdown. My administration kept a check on the prices of essential items like fruits, vegetables, milk etc. We also provided more than 4 crore food packets to the needy. Keeping the aged and older citizens living alone in mega cities, we provided door to door meal facilities under the Vadil Vandana Yojana. The poor and BPL families in the state were provided free of cost food grains in a phase wise manner by the administration. It was also for the first time in the history of Gujarat that we provided free of cost food grains to APL families. In all, we were able to provide free food grains to nearly 50% of the state’s population within the first month of the lockdown, keeping in mind the SOPs introduced by GOI. Despite the challenges thrown our way by the pandemic, we managed to undertake all these activities smoothly. It is also important to note that the industries and units dealing with the production of essential commodities operated during the entire lockdown in an effortless manner. Hi India: In so much as the
Even during the lockdown, we were constantly on our toes and in dialogue with pharmaceutical firms in the state to ensure an unhindered supply of primary medicines and related healthcare items. I am happy to share that Gujarat contributed its part in providing HCQ ( Hydroxychloroquine) tablets to India during the lockdown.
pandemic has seriously affected India’s economy, within that what has been Gujarat’s experience? Chief Minister: Yes, the pandemic has adversely affected the global economy. Gujarat, being an industrial powerhouse of India, has also been affected. However, I must tell you that my administration ensured a smooth operation and supply of essential products and services during the entire lockdown. At the same time, we ensured that the industries associated with these products function with SOPs given by the GOI. My team and I were carefully assessing the situation from Day-1. And based on the SOPs by GOI, we decided to resume APMCs, export units outside containment zones, industries etc. in a step-wise manner. You will be pleased to know that more than 500,000 labourers resumed their duties with the first few days of our announcement. At the same time, we devised special SOPs for labourers and introduced staggered working hours, and fixed working hours for women labourers. As the situation became better, we gave more relaxations. Within a month of restarting, the power consumption of industrial units in Gujarat was nearly 80 per cent than the total power consumption on a normal day. To ensure fast-paced recovery of Gujarat post the lockdown, I had appointed a Special Economic Revival Committee headed by Former Finance Secretary of Government of India Dr. Hasmukh Adhia. Based on the recommendations of the committee, we introduced Rs. 14,000 crore (140 billion rupees) ‘Atmanirbhar Gujarat Package’ which included a Rs 5,000 crore (50 billion rupees) ‘Atmanirbhar Gujarat Sahay Yojana’ Under this, we provided loans at a nominal interest rate of 2% to self-employed people like barbers, small shop owners etc. I am extremely happy to share that Gujarat has accounted for 53% of India’s FDI for April-September 2020 of FY 2020-21 (during the lockdown). The state received FDI worth Rs.1.19 lakh crore. We are at the forefront in embracing the Prime Minister’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat in true spirit, and came up with the New Industrial Policy on 29th August, 2020. Gujarat was the first state in India to unveil a dedicated industrial policy in the wake of the pandemic. The New Gujarat Industrial Policy

obal pandemic, which is why ng this pandemic is concerned, 2020 is a progressive & bold step that aims to create an enabling ecosystem for Atmanirbhar Bharat and instil the idea of “Minimum Government and Maximum Governance” with first of its kind initiatives in India like: De-linking incentives from SGST Providing government land on long term lease to industries with all banking benefits Support to private companies for setting up R&D centres Support to industries to build dormitories for labourers. Hi India: In terms of the debate manufacturing versus high-tech what has been your government’s approach to ensure that the state’s economy bounces back? Chief Minister: Our government has focused to take a balanced approach for boosting the manufacturing. While traditional manufacturing is important to increase employment, at the same time, it is also important to upgrade manufacturing practices and adopt high-tech manufacturing to compete at a global scale and also improve quality of employment. With this background, in the recently announced Gujarat Industrial Policy 2020, while significant benefits have been announced for traditional manufacturing industries, we have also introduced incentives to companies to set up their own R&D centres or acquire foreign patented technologies, for the first time. Industry 4.0 has also been recognized as a thrust sector in the Gujarat Industrial Policy 2020. Hi India: In 2018-19, the manufacturing sector in Gujarat accounted for some 38 percent of the total gross value added (GVA), according to the National Accounts Statistics (NAS). How do you think the pandemic might have changed that? Chief Minister: During the initial days of announcement of lockdown, everything had come to a standstill. But the government of Gujarat was quick to adapt, and we had set up district level committees to coordinate with industries and ensure that there is a smooth resumption of industrial operations. Within 4 days, industrial activity resumed in rural areas excluding containment zones & around 6,000 units were given approval to start operations in Gujarat. Within a few days, almost 90% industries in Gujarat were functional. The state took serious notice of the issues caused due to lockdown and

We very well know that Gujarat has become a world leader in the automobile, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing industries, MSMEs as well as in attracting FDIs. Gujarat is now a preferred destination for investments due to success of Vibrant Summit and because of the Industrial Policy and Ease of Doing Business Policy. But our focus is not limited to just the industrial sector. provided possible solutions. This is the reason why Gujarat regained its economic pace in a very short period of time. 10,500 crore (105 billion rupees). It is a matter of pride that Gujarat has become a preferred destination for investors which is evident by the fact that the state received highest FDI of US$ 16 billion during Apr – Sep 2020 accounting for 53% of the total FDI inflows in India. Such timely actions and initiatives taken by the state government have facilitated industries to achieve and also surpass their outputs of preCOVID level in a short span of time hence we do not expect any dip in the overall contribution of manufacturing sector in Gujarat’s GVA. Hi India: Gujarat generally and Ahmedabad particularly has been known for its strong pharmaceutical sector. In light of the pandemic and the world’s health priorities having been so completely upended what role can Gujarat’s pharmaceutical sector play globally? Chief Minister: Gujarat has been a hub of the pharmaceutical industry for more than a decade. Major pharmaceutical hubs of India have established their units in Gujarat due to the fast paced and transparent policies of the state government. Even during the lockdown, we were constantly on our toes and in dialogue with pharmaceutical firms in the state to ensure an unhindered supply of primary medicines and related healthcare items. I am happy to share that Gujarat contributed its part in providing HCQ (Hydroxychloroquine) tablets to India during the lockdown. As soon as we got to know about the increase in demand for HCQ tablets, I held meetings with leaders in the pharmaceutical industry, who were willing to assist the government in the fight against Covid19. We exported more than 3 crore HCQ tablets during the lockdown. At the same time, we ensured that there were enough to meet the demands of the people in the state. Today, I am happy to share that Zydus is in the process of manufacturing a COVID-19 vaccine. All of us are eagerly waiting for the same as it is manufactured in Gujarat. Hon’ble Prime Minister had visited the facility and inspected its progress last year. I am sure that the vaccine
will soon be ready to be rolled out in Gujarat. Hi India: One of the most debilitating effects of the pandemic has been on how to maintain learning continuity in schools. In this context, it was discovered early during the pandemic that about 30 percent of students had limited or no access to remote learning devices. The state has been praised by the World Bank for its handling of this emergency. Tell us about how the state’s education department evolved its approach with some focus on Periodic Assessment Tests (PAT)? Chief Minister: It was evident and we knew that no industry would remain unaffected by the effects of lockdown. Education sector was no exception. All educational institutions across the state were shut down. We came up with a unique initiative to reach out to students for ensuring that there would be no academic loss amid the Coronavirus outbreak. Through
regional TV channels, we decided to conduct a one-hour session for the students of Standard III, IX and XI. Under this initiative, the Education Department directed nearly 1.5 lakh primary teachers from schools reached out to individual students and handed over worksheets, 51 weekly tests and their answer sheets. These teachers also publicized and made the beneficiaries aware of this initiative of conducting classes through television. The state government is also mulling to explore other platforms such as the Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geoinformatics (BISAG), and the state’s educational channel ‘Vande Gujarat’, which can also be possible with the help of DD dish. As far as The Periodical Assessment Test (PAT) is concerned, PAT has been organized since the year 2018-19. The month-wise syllabus is already proposed and shared with all the districts for schools. It is also published on the website.

n her 13-year career so far, Anushka Sharma has showcased different shades of women — from the ambitious wedding planner in Band Baaja Baaraat (2010) to the spirited Aarfa in Sultan (2016) and the self-reliant Mamta in Sui Dhaaga (2018). Though the characters resided in different universes, a common thread tied them — each had a strong head on her shoulders and the agency to take life decisions. Sharma stepped up her efforts to change the depiction of women in Indian cinema as she launched her production house in 2015 and backed female-led stories. As she puts her weight behind another powerful story Mai, the actor-producer says she knew early on in her career that she didn’t want to be boxed as the leading man’s arm candy. “I have been conscious enough to select roles that I felt could contribute towards changing the portrayal of women
on screen. I was done seeing myself as an accessory. I vowed that as a producer, I will not allow women to be depicted regressively,” she says. Sharma admits it wasn’t easy to swim against the tide. “It took a lot of self-belief, but it was liberating to do this for myself.” “Movies have the power to impact change and help people determine what is right and wrong. By being clear about how we will depict women in cinema, we can alter the mindset of people, and shatter age-old beliefs and customs. My film choices and productions are a testimony to the fact that I’m committed to sparking a conversation in society about equality, self-respect and empowerment.”

ctor Taapsee Pannu has responded to the raids by the Income Tax Department on March 3 in a new interview, saying that she never expected it to happen to her or her family. The actor had addressed the “intense search” that went on for three days in a series of tweets last week. Now, in the interview, the actor has opened up on the experience and said while as a public personality she is always prepared for such a thing, it came as a surprise for her family. “When they visited me, I was told my other residences in Delhi and Mumbai are also being searched simultaneously. I was informed. I don’t think I expected that it will happen to me, my family especially. It was very out of the blue for them. They didn’t see it coming at all. They were more perturbed,” Taapsee told

Don’t want to get into rut of repeating myself Rajkummar Rao "I don't want to get into the rut of doing the same thing, repeatedly. I don't want to be trapped," says Rajkummar Rao.

ctor Rajkummar Rao says he wants to stay away from the comfort zone of playing to the gallery despite knowing that some of his “gestures” might impress the audience. In his decade-long Bollywood journey, Rao has emerged as a performer known for capturing the essence of his characters — be it his National Award-winning turn as the righteous lawyer in Shahid or the menacing terrorist Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh in Omerta. The 36-year-old actor said even though his attempt is to play regular, relatable men on screen, he avoids getting “trapped” in a certain image. “There are times when I try and be conscious that I can’t repeat certain gestures and avoid that. I know it might work beautifully for the audience and perhaps even the scene, but I restrain myself. “I don’t want to get into the rut of doing the same thing, repeatedly. I don’t want to be trapped,” Rao told. To distinguish between his roles, the actor said he prefers to dive deep into brainstorming sessions with his directors. Citing the examples of Vikramaditya Motwane’s Trapped, Hansal Mehta’s Shahid and the upcoming Badhaai Do, helmed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni, the actor said the depth of the character decides the amount of time he dedicates to the preparation. But if it’s a comedy film, like his latest Roohi, his process is more “organic.” “When you do a comedy, it’s spontaneous, you can’t force it. It’s about being there and having fun with your lines. I don’t plan anything when it comes to comedies. The trick is to surrender.” Rao returns to the horror-comedy universe, three years after the blockbuster Stree. The actor said comparisons to Stree would be “unfair” to his new film. “The firsts are always special. These are different films, with new characters. I hope people don’t feel ‘lets see what’s common between Roohi and Stree’.
Neetu Kapoor on coping with Rishi Kapoor’s death Calling 2020 a tough year, Neetu opened up about how she is coping Rishi’s death. “I had gathered courage to work after Rishi passed away in 2020. I told myself that work would help me get over my grief. It was the only way to get on with life,” she told. The actor had also been giving updates on social media how her family, daughter Riddhima Kapoor Sahni and son Ranbir, supported her and gave her time to heal. “2020 was quite a roller coaster!!! When YOU left I felt like a deer caught in the headlights not knowing where to go … #jjj was cathartic at that time as it gave me something to look forward to !!! Then Covid happened I could have never gone thru so much without my cuties. Thank you both for holding on #RnR #jugjuggjeeyo,” she had written on Instagram.
Why should I stop doing comedy?: Varun Sharma
773.526.8353 MIDWEST / EASTCOAST
On Women’s Day, a millennial watches cult classic Mother India for the first time The film, which released in 1957, stars Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajender Kumar and Raaj Kumar, and was clearly ahead of its time. It is everything you would expect from a Bollywood film – memorable songs, excellent performances, heavy dialogues and of course, action. But for someone who watched it in 2021, it is tragic to see the portrayal of women in reel life and expectations from the gender in real life have not changed much in 63 years. It’s rightly said that films are a reflection of society. Today, we cringe when a woman is shown as extremely submissive, but as a society, we still have set rules of how a ‘adarsh naari’ should be. But who laid down these rules? Can we blame anyone for these patriarchal boundaries? Mother India represents the society we lived in, six decades ago. But after having watched it in 2021, we realised some of those rules are still intact. The makers also gives us a glimpse of how society is hard on men as well.
Priyanka, Nick Jonas to announce 93rd Oscar nominations
All set for the release of Roohi, Varun Sharma on why he loves the genre and the challenge of keeping it different.
C
omedy has been a stronghold for the actor since he played Choocha in the Fukrey franchise. Since then, he has often been cast as the comic relief in ensemble films. Ask him how difficult it is to up his ante and Sharma says, “There is constant pressure to prove yourself. Roohi should be different from my last film, Chhichhore and that’s been an ongoing process.” At a time when people believe last names matter, Sharma claims he is happier to be “known by my character names”. “That will be my biggest win. It’s a tough job to put a smile on anyone’s face. It’s doubly difficult to do it differently every time.” But has he been deterred by the overt stereotyping? Sharma, whose next project is Ranveer Singh’s Cirkus, has often been told to take a break from comedy. “I don’t understand why I should stop doing what I am good at. I want to try my hand at other genres, but not at the cost of comedy. If someone casts me in a serious role, I will give it my all.”
It will be a couple's affair when the nominations for the 93rd annual Academy Awards are announced! Global star cand singer-actor Nick Jonas will announce the Oscar nominations on March 15. The Academy took to Twitter and revealed that the power couple will announce the nominations in all 23 categories on Monday. The nominations will be announced in two parts via global live streaming. "Who's excited for #OscarNoms? Join @priyankachopra and @nickjonas here on Monday at 5:19 am PDT. https://twitter.com/i/ events/1369298773734682625," the tweet read. Priyanka and Nick also shared the news on social media in a video where the 'Mary Kom' actor ended up making a little gaffe. Sharing the video on Instagram, Priyanka used the latest TikTok trend. Priyanka began the video by saying, "Tell me we are announcing the Oscar nominations without telling me we are announcing Oscar nominations", a popular trend on Instagram reels and TikTok.

Meet The Policewoman Who Has Women’s Day: Powerful women Saved Over 950 Runaway And athletes who dominate their sport Trafficked Kids Rekha Mishra hopes that the work she does helps young girls realise that "they can be the heroine of their lives and that they have the power within them to write their own stories". She, after all, is living testimony to the power of women. A policewoman with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in Mumbai, Rekha Mishra's daring exploits and determination has helped save more than 950 runaway and trafficked children. The policewoman recently sat down with Humans of Bombay for an interview in which she spoke about her childhood, her work with the RPF and much more. Ms Mishra says that she was inspired to join the police force by her father, who served in the army. "My sisters and I were encouraged to take up a life of service," she says. As a young girl, Rekha Mishra would wake up early to study and work out. "The day I passed, my father saluted me'Always work for a cause, not the applause,' he said. Ms Mishra was posted at Mumbai's famed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and was in-charge of preventing trafficking of women and children. She is credited with rescuing hundreds of destitute, missing, kidnapped or runaway children from various railway stations in the last few years.
PV Sindhu has perhaps carved her name as the most popular noncricketing athlete in India. At the age of 21, she had the entire country on their feet during the final round of Rio Olympics 2016 when she became the first and the only Indian to win a silver medal in Badminton
Saina Nehwal’s bronze at London 2012, which was India’s first-ever medal in badminton at the Olympic Games. When she returned home with the medal, Saina Nehwal became an icon for Indian youth and Olympic dreamers. She has added many more medals, including at the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, since then to her tally.
"Kill Me Instead"
Myanmar Nun Pleading With Military Goes Viral As protests demanding the return of democracy have rolled on, the junta has steadily escalated its use of force, using tear gas, water cannon, rubber bullets, and live rounds. Yangon, Myanmar: Kneeling before them in the dust of a northern Myanmar city, Sister Ann Rose Nu Tawng begged a group of heavily armed police officers to spare "the children" and take her life instead. The image of the Catholic nun in a simple white habit, her hands spread, pleading with the forces of the country's new junta as they prepared to crack down on a protest, has gone viral and won her praise in the majority-Buddhist country. "I knelt down... begging them not to shoot and torture the children, but to shoot me and kill me instead," she told on Tuesday. Her act of bravery in the city of Myitkyina on Monday came as Myanmar struggles with the chaotic aftermath of the military's February 1 ouster of civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi. As protests demanding the return of democracy have rolled on, the junta has steadily escalated its use of force, using tear gas, water cannon, rubber bullets, and live rounds. Protesters took to the streets of Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin state, on Monday wearing hard hats and carrying homemade shields. As police started massing around them, Sister Ann Rose Nu Tawng and two other nuns pleaded with them to leave. "The police were chasing to arrest them and I was worried for the children," she said. It was at that point that the 45-year-old nun fell to her knees. Moments later, as she was begging for restraint, the police started firing into the crowd of protesters behind her. "The children panicked and ran to the front... I couldn't do anything but I was praying for God to save and help the children," she said. First she saw a man shot in the head fall dead in front of her -- then she felt the sting of tear gas. "I felt like the world was crashing," she said. "I'm very sad it happened as I was begging them." A local rescue team confirmed to AFP that two men were shot dead on the spot during Monday's clash, though it did not confirm whether live rounds or rubber bullets were used.
MC Mary Kom has not only emerged as an inspiration for the women of the country in a sport more popular among men, but is also seen as the face of Indian boxing, with Vijender Singh from Haryana perhaps being the closest in terms of popularity.
In July 2019, sprinter Hima Das participated in a series of competitions as part of her preparations for the Olympics, winning five gold medals in less than 20 days across Poland and the Czech Republic. Four of her victories came in the 200m sprint while her fifth top-podium finish was in the 400m event.

COVID-19 Vaccines Work. Here’s the Real-World Proof
Myth#1: Spot exercising reduces belly fat Generally people lose fat in the reverse order, starting where they accumulated it first. For example, Arun adds fat to his midsection and then to his hip area. He then performs abdominal exercises to reduce the fat in the abdomen. Even if he burns enough calories through his abdominal workouts, he will lose fat first in his hip area, as this was the last place it was stored. Therefore, though people can spot train muscles, they cannot necessarily spot reduce fat.
Myth #2: One month to flat stomach
Golden rules for a flat tummy
Belly fat did not accumulate in one day, one week or even one month. It was steadily nurtured over years of inattention. Then isn’t it unrealistic to expect it to disappear within a month? The truth is, there is no short cut to six packs! Patience and consistency are the key.
Myth #3: Belly fat is genetic, it runs in my family! Contrary to what some people believe, everyone can achieve a flat stomach. A diet high in processed foods, refined sugar and foods you don’t tolerate are most responsible for belly fat. Some people are gifted with a high metabolic rate and for them losing weight is easier than others. But with sustained exercise anyone can become fit with a flat stomach.
Remember that a healthy diet, cardiovascular Myth #4: Belly fat is regular fat exercise and weight training are a sure shot to a flat No! People with a large belly (more than 35 inch for women and 40 inch tummy, provided you are consistent with all three. for men) are significantly more susceptible to metabolic diseases. Big belly accompanies a risk of heart disease, stroke and Type-2 diabetes. Always consult a professional and obtain medical Most people with a large belly already suffer from abnormal cholesterol triglyceride levels, hypertension and high blood sugar. Getting rid clearance before starting on a workout. or of this excess fat reduces the chances of metabolic disease substantially.
Steps to reduce belly fat #1 Cardiovascular exercise Perhaps there is no other exercise that reduces belly fat faster than cardio. This does not mean you have to engage in high intensity cardio workouts. The trick here is consistency. Start with a regular 30-minute cardio exercise (walk/jog/run) five times a week. Once your body is familiar with this routine and can take it without too much of complaints, amp it up a bit with other forms of cardio exercises. Do not start with high intensity exercise unless your body is used to it (in which case you would have a flat stomach anyway).
#2 Weight training Contrary to popular belief, weight training is not about only gaining muscles. A good weight training programme will make you lose more calories in one hour than a 5 km run! Since it is much less intense than an HIIT programme or running, it can be an easy remedy for a flat tummy. Target six months of weight training, at least three times a week, for maximum benefit.
#3 Diet Although ranked at No. 3 in my column, this can very well be No. 1. Eating less will not ensure a flat stomach. Eating right will! The best option would be to consult a dietician. General guidelines would be to cut down sugary food, beverages, alcohol and packaged snacks to a minimum, if not totally. The diet chart is not a lifetime objective that one needs to follow. Eating right and eating mindfully becomes a matter of habit over time.
It’s one thing to test a vaccine, and another to see it in action in the real world. More than two months after the first vaccines were authorized in the U.K. and U.S., strong data have emerged showing that the shots are doing what they are supposed to do: protect people from COVID-19. In a study published Feb. 24 in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers in Israel and the U.S. report that the vaccine made by Pfizer-BioNTech was highly effective in protecting against infection with the COVID-19 virus, lowering people’s chances of getting sick with the disease—especially severe disease—and dropping COVID-19 hospitalization rates. The data, says Marc Lipsitch, professor of epidemiology at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public
In a separate pre-print study published in the Lancet on Feb. 19 that hasn’t yet been peer reviewed, health officials in Scotland also reported that vaccination with either the Pfizer-BioNTech or AstraZeneca shot was helping to lower hospitalization rates due to COVID-19 in the country. Health and co-author of the paper, are “close to the best possible news.” The findings are a real-world harbinger of what the world can expect as more people get vaccinated and throw up a wall of immunity against the virus. Israel may lead the way in providing hints of where the pandemic is headed. With a unique nationally coordinated system for vaccinating people, and a tight connection between who gets the shots and their health records, the country is a scientist’s ideal study group. In the NEJM study, researchers included data from nearly 600,000 vaccinated people, and compared them to a similarly sized group of people who hadn’t gotten the vaccine. After two doses, the vaccine, it turned out, was 92% effective in preventing infection and, among those who did get infected, 92% effective in protecting against COVID-19 symptoms, 92% effective in protecting against severe disease, and 87% effective in protecting people from needing hospitalization for COVID-19. The results mirror those found by Pfizer and BioNTech in their late-stage study of 44,000 people, which also showed the vaccine could dramatically reduce the risk of COVID-19 illness, especially severe disease. But having real world data further bolsters that effectiveness data, and could go a long way toward addressing some of the reluctance people feel about getting the shot because it was developed and tested so quickly.

Business travel is back and The ultimate luxury audio gear it’s weirder than ever before As Europe struggles to contain the pandemic, business people are being lured away from Zoom and into Covid-free luxury travel
Devialet Phantom Reactor Skin carry case A bold, wholly superfluous accessory for a niche speaker system from one of the most forward-thinking audio brands, this bowling ball-style carry case for the Devialet Phantom Reactor features lightweight aluminium handles and a tough water-repellent exterior with a plush second-skin interior for maximum protection on the go. Given the Phantom Reactor is a hefty mains-powered speaker and not specifically designed to be portable, the question remains as to where you’re likely to be taking it, but, in truth, once you hear the power and performance on offer you’ll be forgiven for making space for the one on your next weekend away.
Business travel is back. Emirates’ Airbus A380 superjumbos are two-thirds full in the posh seats. “Everybody who thinks business is going to be done in future on Zoom needs to think again,” says Tim Clark, the airline’s CEO. He predicts global passenger numbers will recover to 2019 levels - four billion - in the next two to three years. But the recovery will be slow and patchy. Infection rates in most cities in the US and western Europe mean it will take time for business travel to pick up in these regions - and it will likely be years before the meetings and conferences sector recovers fully. Ask the super-rich, who usually live a gilded bubble. The high point of their annual calendar, the World Economic Forum, was cancelled twice last year - first in its
traditional home in Davos in the Swiss Alps, then in a proposed local alternative location, Lucerne-Bürgenstock. It will take place this year in May but in much warmer climes: Singapore. The WEF’s move east is the first strike in what is becoming one of the most unusual battles sparked by the pandemic. The race is on to become the world’s “safe space” – a low-risk Covid environment for meetings and conferences. There are two contenders: Singapore and Dubai. Singapore wants to leverage its infamously strict social rules and reputation for hitech efficiency to win the battle. “People are looking around for a safe place to fly to and meet and we’re confident Singapore can be that place,” says Chan Chun Sing, Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry.
Apple plans to launch mixed reality headset in 2022 Motorola’s 2021 smartwatch Motorola’s upcoming smartwatch this year is expected to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 4100 processor. As per leaked photos on Reddit by user u/ TheMacJezza spotted by 9to5Google, the unnamed Moto-branded smartwatch with circular dial has Snapdragon 4100 processor written on its back. Motorola earlier shared that it will be launching three smartwatches — Moto G Smartwatch, Moto Watch and Moto One — in mid-2021. It is yet to be confirmed which one of three watches will sport the flagship smartwatch processor from Qualcomm. The chipmaker claims that the new processor has an 85 per cent CPU, two and a half times faster GPU and has one-fourth more battery life when compared to its predecessor, Snapdragon 3100. Currently, the new 12nm processor can only be seen on Mobvoi’s TicWatch Pro 3. Along with the processor reveal, the images also show that there is a wireless charging coil on its back. The heart-rate sensor seems to be the same as the second generation.
A mixed-reality headset might be Apple’s next big device, and it’s reportedly coming as early as 2022. In a note to investors on Sunday, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the Cupertino company is gearing up to launch a headset for augmented and virtual reality next year. The headset will reportedly retail for $1000 in the US. The headset would use Sony’s Micro-OLED displays and improved optical modules to provide an “immersive experience
that is significantly better than existing VR products.” Prototypes of the headset currently weigh between 200 and 300 grams, but the aim is to reduce the weight by 100 to 200 grams, Kuo wrote. “We predict that Apple’s MR/AR product roadmap includes three phases: helmet type by 2022, glasses type by 2025, and contact lens type by 2030–2040,” Kuo wrote in the note, seen by MacRumors. “We foresee that the helmet product will provide AR and VR experiences, while glasses and contact lens types of products are more likely to focus on AR applications.” Kou isn’t the first one to predict that Apple is heavily investing in the AR/VR space. According to CNET, Apple is working on a powerful headset that would support augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies, featuring an 8K display higher resolution for each eye, as well as its own processor to process VR and AR images. Experts say the arrival of Apple’s AR/VR headset could be the beginning of a major shift for the technology industry, which is heavily dependent on smartphones.

Facebook Reels goes official in India, to also feature recommended Reels from Instagram
Facebook on Tuesday announced the official launch of short form videos on its platform, a feature it had been testing since last year in India. The feature is now called "Facebook Reels.” Facebook also announced it would allow select Instagram creators to share their Reels on Facebook. This feature is being tested in India first. Facebook is rebranding its TikTok-like short form videos to Reels. Facebook had started testing the ability for users to create and share short form videos on the News Feed last year in India. Facebook Reels is similar to Instagram Reels wherein users can select a song from Facebook’s music library, choose different effects, set a timer, speed up or slow down the video, and more.
Europe seeks semiconductor boost, first quantum computer
The European Union wants to produce a fifth of the global output of cuttingedge semiconductors at the end of this decade and make its first quantum computer in five years, as part of efforts to cut its dependence on non-European technologies. The plan cited the importance of semiconductors, used in connected cars, smartphones, internet-linked devices, high performance computers and artificial intelligence, and where a global shortage is shutting down car factories around the world. "It is our proposed level of ambition that by 2030 the production of cuttingedge and sustainable semiconductors in Europe including processors is at least 20% of world production in value," according to an EU document seen by Reuters. European Commission Vice President Margrethe Vestager and EU industry chief Thierry Breton will present the plan on Tuesday. The EU plan recommended investing in quantum technologies, saying that these could be a game changer in developing new medicines and to speed up genome sequencing.
