US not in a rush to recognise Taliban government, says White House

773.526.8353 MIDWEST / EASTCOAST

Former US President Trump to serve as boxing commentator

Taliban's hardline interim government includes specially designated global terrorist Sirajuddin Haqqani as the acting interior minister

White House press secretary Jen Psaki.

HiIndia Newsdesk The United States is not in a rush to recognise the new interim government in Afghanistan, the White House said on Wednesday, asserting that it is talks with the Taliban to get American citizens out of the strife-torn country.

Robert E Lee statue: Virginia removes contentious memorial as crowds cheer HiIndia Newsdesk An imposing statue of an American Confederate general in Richmond, Virginia, has been taken down. Governor Ralph Northam announced it would come down amid national protests after the death of George Floyd. The statue became a focal point for this activism and crowds cheered as a crane removed it on Wednesday. Memorials to leaders of the pro-slavery, Confederate states whose capital was Richmond - have long stirred controversy. While the removal of these statues is often done with little fanfare, authorities broadcast Wednesday's removal on social media. Large crowds also gathered at the site. Earlier in the week, Mr Northam called the statue "a monument to the Confederate insurrection".

“No one in this administration, not the President nor anyone on the national security team, would suggest that the Taliban are respected and valued members of the global community. They have not earned that in any way, and we have never assessed that. This is a caretaker cabinet that does include four former imprisoned Taliban fighters,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters at her daily news conference. “We have not conveyed we’re going to recognise it and nor are we rushing to recognition. There’s a lot they have to do before that. What we are working to do is to engage with them because they oversee and control Afghanistan right now to get American citizens, legal permanent residents, SIV applicants out of Afghanistan,” Psaki said.

US cross divide for Afghans

HiIndia Newsdesk The hundreds of parishioners at Desert Springs Bible Church, a sprawling megachurch in the northern suburbs of Phoenix, are divided over mask mandates, the presidential election and what to do about migrants on the border. But they are unified on one issue: the need for the US to take in thousands of Afghan evacuees, and they are passing the plate to make it happen. “Even the most Rightleaning isolationists within our sphere recognise the level of responsibility that America has to people who sacrificed for the nation’s interest,” said Caleb Campbell, the evangelical church’s lead pastor. Last weekend, the church inaugurated a campaign to raise money for the dozens of Afghan families who are expected to start streaming into greater Phoenix in the next several weeks.

Joe Biden Wants Solar To Provide 45% Of US Energy By 2050 HiIndia Newsdesk

A report released by the Department of Energy (DOE) said solar could account for much as 40 percent of the power supply by 2035 and 45 percent by 2050, up from its current level of just three percent.

New York, United States: The Biden administration said Wednesday the United States should aim to garner nearly 50 percent of its electric supply from solar energy by mid-century, unveiling the latest component of its climate change strategy. A report released by the Department of Energy (DOE) said solar could account for much as 40 percent of the power supply by 2035 and 45 percent by 2050, up from its current level of just three percent. However reaching this level would require the United States to quadruple its annual solar capacity additions, the department said in a statement. This future also depends on extensive public investments in a power grid originally built for power from coal and natural gas, as well as policy changes to disincentivize carbon-based energy, the department added. The report comes as President Joe Biden presses for aggressive action on climate change and renewable energy as Congress debates massive proposals to overhaul the country's infrastructure against a backdrop of worsening tropical storms and forest fires in the United States. It also comes on the heels of a White House announcement last month that set a 2030 target for half of all cars sold in the United States to be zero-emission -- another bold goal that will depend on a confluence of public policies, private sector investments and consumer preference to become a reality.

HiIndia Newsdesk Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to provide commentary from ringside Saturday for an exhibition boxing card headlined by 58-year-old former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield. Trump will be joined by his son, Donald Jr., in Hollywood, Florida, for the alternate feed for the fourbout card, which will be available on pay-per-view on FITE.TV. According to FITE.TV, the pay-perview will be USD 49.99 and will be available through mobile and Smart TV apps. Both Trumps will be in the building.

NASA's $10 Billion Space Telescope To Launch In December

HiIndia Newsdesk Washington: The James Webb Space Telescope, which astronomers hope will herald a new era of discovery, will launch on December 18, NASA said Wednesday. The $10 billion observatory, which is a joint project by NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency, will blast off on an Ariane 5 rocket from Spaceport in French Guiana. It is currently stowed at contractor Northrop Grumman's facilities in Redondo Beach, California, where it is awaiting shipping. "Webb is an exemplary mission that signifies the epitome of perseverance," said Webb's NASA program director Gregory Robinson in a statement. "We are extremely honored to orbit NASA's James Webb Space Telescope with Ariane, a first for Arianespace and the European space team," added Stephane Israel, CEO of Arianespace.

Covid: Sydney reveals plan to end months-long lockdown

Fire kills 41 inmates in overcrowded prison in Indonesia

Small protests persisted, with dozens of women taking to the streets of Kabul to demand representation in the new administration and for their rights to be protected

HiIndia Newsdesk Australia's biggest city Sydney is likely to ease out of lockdown from next month, provided a vaccination threshold is reached. The New South Wales (NSW) state capital has been in lockdown since July due to a Delta variant outbreak. The state government released its much-anticipated "roadmap to freedom" on Thursday. It sets out new freedoms for people once 70% of adults in the state have had two vaccine doses.

HiIndia Newsdesk A fire killed 41 inmates in an overcrowded prison block in Indonesia’s Banten province on Wednesday, a government minister said, injuring scores more in a blaze that police said may have been caused by an electrical fault. The fire, the country’s deadliest since 47 perished in a firework factory disaster in 2017, broke out at 1.45am, local time, in a Tangerang Prison block, said Indonesian law and human rights minister Yasonna Laoly, after visiting the scene.

Channel crossings: Priti Patel authorises turning back of migrant boats

HiIndia Newsdesk Priti Patel has authorised Border Force to turn boats carrying migrants back at sea to prevent them reaching the UK. More than 1,500 migrants have crossed the English Channel by boat this week. The home secretary and her French counterpart discussed the issue on Wednesday but failed to agree new measures to prevent the crossings. Her plan to force boats back into French waters is also likely to be opposed

by French authorities who consider it to be dangerous. Under international maritime law, people at risk of losing their lives at sea must be rescued. The government has said it needs to use every possible tactic at its disposal to tackle people smuggling, while the Home Office said it continued to evaluate and test a range of safe and legal options to find ways of stopping small boats making the dangerous journey. Ms Patel said she had held constructive talks with French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, adding: "I made clear that delivering results and stopping crossings were an absolute priority for the British people." But in a letter to the home secretary ahead of their meeting Mr Darmanin said that the French position on interception at sea was unchanged. "Safeguarding human lives at sea takes priority over considerations of nationality, status and migratory policy, out of strict respect for the international maritime law governing search and rescue at sea," he wrote.

Seoul’s military says North Korea likely staged military parade

North Korea often celebrates major state anniversaries by rolling out thousands of goose-stepping troops and its most advanced military hardware at Pyongyang's Kim Il Sung Square, named after Kim's state-founding grandfather.

HiIndia Newsdesk

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said Thursday it was closely monitoring North Korea after detecting signs of a military parade, which was possibly the "main event," not a rehearsal. South Korea’s military says it believes North Korea staged an overnight military parade at its capital, Pyongyang. The North’s display of military might would likely be a measured attempt at pressuring the Biden administration over a freeze in nuclear diplomacy after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un failed to leverage his arsenal for economic benefits during the Trump years. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Thursday it was closely monitoring North Korea after detecting signs of a military parade, which was possibly the “main event,” not a rehearsal. It wasn’t immediately clear what kinds of weapons were showcased or whether Kim participated in the event, which would have been staged to celebrate the 73rd anniversary of the country’s founding. There were no immediate reports of a military parade in North Korean state media Thursday morning. The North didn’t provide live TV coverage during previous nighttime parades in January and October last year and aired a taped broadcast hours later. North Korea often celebrates major state anniversaries by rolling out thousands of goose-stepping troops and its most advanced military hardware at Pyongyang’s Kim Il Sung Square, named after Kim’s state-founding grandfather.

The Taliban have announced a new caretaker government in Afghanistan. (Getty Images)

The Taliban drew from its inner high echelons to fill top posts in Afghanistan's new government on Tuesday, including an associate of the Islamist militant group's founder as premier and a wanted man on a U.S. terrorism list as interior minister. World powers have told the Taliban the key to peace and development is an inclusive government that would back up its pledges of a more conciliatory approach, upholding human rights, after a previous 1996-2001 period in power marked by bloody vendettas and oppression of women. Taliban supreme leader Haibatullah Akhundzada, in his first public statement since the Aug. 15 seizure of the capital Kabul by the insurgents, said the Taliban were committed to all international laws, treaties and commitments not in conflict with Islamic law. "In the future, all matters of governance and life in Afghanistan will be regulated by the laws of the Holy Sharia," he said in a statement, in which he also congratulated Afghans on what he called the country's liberation from foreign rule. The names announced for the new government, three weeks after the Taliban swept to military victory as U.S.-led foreign forces withdrew and the weak Western-backed government collapsed, gave no sign of an olive branch to its opponents. The United States said it was concerned by the track records of some of the Cabinet members and noted that no women had been included. "The world is watching closely," a U.S. State Department spokesperson said. Afghans who enjoyed major progress in education and civil liberties over the 20 years of U.S.-backed government remain fearful of Taliban intentions and daily protests have continued since the Taliban takeover, challenging the new rulers. On Tuesday, as the new government was being announced, a group of Afghan women in a Kabul street took cover after Taliban gunmen fired into the air to disperse hundreds of protesters. The last time the Taliban ruled Afghanistan, girls could not attend school and women were banned from work and education. Religious police would flog anyone breaking the rules and public executions were carried out. The Taliban has urged Afghans to be patient and vowed to be more tolerant this time - a commitment many Afghans and foreign powers will be scrutinising as a condition for aid and investment desperately needed in Afghanistan.

'will follow Sharia law for all matters'

New Taliban govt policy In the future, all matters of governance and life in Afghanistan will be regulated by the laws of the Holy Sharia Late Founder's Legacy In New Government Mullah Hasan Akhund, named as prime minister, like many in the Taliban leadership derives much of his prestige from his close link to the movement's reclusive late founder Mullah Omar, who presided over its rule two decades ago. Akhund is longtime chief of the Taliban's powerful decision-making body Rehbari Shura, or leadership council. He was foreign minister and then deputy prime minister when the Taliban were last in power and, like many of the incoming Cabinet, is under U.N. sanctions for his role in that government. Sirajuddin Haqqani, the new interior minister, is the son of the founder of the Haqqani network, classified as a terrorist group by Washington. He is one of the FBI's most wanted men due to his involvement in suicide attacks and ties with Al Qaeda. Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, head of the movement's political office who was given his nom de guerre

"brother", or Baradar, by Mullah Omar, was appointed as Akhund's deputy, main Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told a news conference in Kabul. The passing over of Baradar for the top government job came as a surprise to some as he had been responsible for negotiating the U.S. withdrawal at talks in Qatar and presenting the face of the Taliban to the outside world. Baradar was previously a senior Taliban commander in the long insurgency against U.S. forces. He was arrested and imprisoned in Pakistan in 2010, becoming head of the Taliban's political office in Doha after his release in 2018. Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob, a son of Mullah Omar, was named as defence minister. All the appointments were in an acting capacity, Mujahid said. White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters on Air Force One, as President Joe Biden flew to New York, that there would be no recognition of the Taliban government soon.

Economic Meltdown

Taliban spokesman Mujahid, speaking against a backdrop of collapsing public services and economic meltdown amidst the chaos of the tumultuous foreign pullout, said an acting cabinet had been formed to respond to the Afghan people's primary needs. He said some ministries remained to be filled pending a hunt for qualified people. The United Nations said earlier on Tuesday that basic services were unravelling in Afghanistan and food and other aid were about to run out. More than half a million people have been displaced internally in Afghanistan this year. An international donor conference is scheduled in Geneva on Sept. 13. Western powers say they are prepared to send humanitarian aid, but that broader economic engagement depends on the shape and actions of the Taliban government.

'Resistance Will Continue'

On Monday, the Taliban claimed victory in the Panjshir valley, the last province holding out against it. Pictures on social media showed Taliban members standing in front of the Panjshir governor's compound after days of fighting with the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan (NRFA), commanded by Panjshiri leader Ahmad Massoud. Massoud denied that his force, consisting of remnants of the Afghan army as well as local militia fighters, was beaten, and tweeted that "our resistance will continue".

SPECIAL STORY

India won three major limited overs trophies when Dhoni was captain: the ICC World T20 in 2007, Dhoni’s first assignment as skipper, the World Cup at home in 2011, and the 2013 Champions Trophy, India's last big title.

T

the BCCI’s announcement on Dhoni’s inclusion took some of its own office-bearers by surprise, and even the selectors came to know about it just minutes before the press conference to announce the squad for the OctoberNovember tournament in the UAE. Sources said India’s dismal white-ball record in ICC events under captain Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri is one of the key factors behind the decision. The team has either fallen at the final hurdle or failed to make it to the final in the Champions Trophy, and World T20 and 50-over World Cups. At the media briefing Wednesday, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said the decision to call up the 40-year-old retired international and the country’s most-celebrated white-ball cricketer was taken after he met Dhoni in Dubai, where IPL teams have started converging to complete the unfinished Covid-hit Season 12. “He was okay with my decision and agreed to be a Team Mentor of Team India for the T20 World Cup only. I am glad that MS (Dhoni) has accepted the BCCI’s offer and he is keen to contribute to the national team once again. MS will work closely with Ravi Shastri as well as other support staff to provide support and direction to Team India,” Shah said. Asked if Kohli and Shastri were consulted, Shah said: “I spoke to the captain and vice-captain, as well as Ravi Shastri. They all are on the same page, so that’s why this matter has reached this conclusion.”

Why go back to Dhoni? India won three major limited overs trophies when Dhoni was captain. The ICC World T20 in 2007, Dhoni’s first assignment as skipper, the World Cup at home in 2011 and the 2013 Champions Trophy, India’s last big title. Dhoni, as the cliché goes, has been there and done that and is still an active cricketer in the Indian Premier League, which means he is very much in touch with the game. His nearunflappable nature and quick reading of game situations would be an asset in a format where thinking on one’s feet is the need of the hour. The nature of wickets in the United Arab Emirates and the kind of bowlers who are likely to prosper in those conditions may have also had an influence in the BCCI roping in Dhoni. The selectors have included five spinners in the squad, expecting pitches to be favourable to tweakers. Dhoni, as seen during the IPL and also in limited-overs cricket, would hand-hold spinners when it came to strategy and setting up batsmen.

M. S. Dhoni

India’s dismal whiteball record in ICC events under captain Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri is one of the key factors behind the decision. The team has either fallen at the final hurdle or failed to make it to the final in the Champions Trophy, and World T20 and 50-over World Cups. Though he will only be in the dugout now, his active involvement as part of the think-tank can only help skipper Virat Kohli’s decision-making. Dhoni has also captained or mentored most of the younger players in the squad so there is already some familiarity.

So has the Kohli-Ravi Shastri combo not worked in limitedovers cricket?

back in Team India dugout — as mentor for World T20 "Excellent Decision" To Have MS Dhoni As Mentor For India: Ex-BCCI Treasurer

Having worked closely with Dhoni in an administrative capacity during the 2009 T20 World Cup (Media Manager) as well as India's tour of England in 2011 (Manager), Anirudh keeps it short and sweet and calls it an excellent move. "It is an excellent decision to bring MS Dhoni on board as the mentor for the team. MS, Ravi Shastri, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma form a very potent leadership group and this decision enhances the team's chances at the ICC T20 World Cup. This decision of the BCCI Secretary must be lauded," he told. As far as MS Dhoni is concerned, I spoke to him when I was in Dubai so he was okay with the decision and he agreed to be the team mentor for the T20 World Cup only. I discussed this particular issue with my colleagues also, they are all on the same page," Shah said during the virtual press conference. "I spoke to captain and vice-captain as well as head coach Ravi Shastri, they all are on the same page so that is why we reached a conclusion," he added.

Under Kohli’s captaincy, the team has failed to win a major limited-overs title. India lost in the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy to Pakistan and lost in the semi-finals of the 2019 50-over World Cup to New Zealand. In the IPL too, Kohli, who leads the Royal Challengers Bangalore, has not tasted success. Dhoni, on the other hand, is a three-time champion with Chennai Super Kings. The Test team under Kohli has won two away series in Australia and he is the most successful Indian skipper overseas. However, in the shorter formats the team has been found wanting. Though it would be unfair to solely blame Kohli, a world title in white-ball cricket has been elusive for eight years. Having the ICC’s white-ball teams’ Captain of the Decade within earshot is something Kohli will welcome.

Why is this being seen as a masterstroke? With the tenure of head coach Ravi Shastri and his support staff expiring after the T20 World Cup, and BCCI not keen to renew their contracts, Dhoni’s appointment works as a perfect stop-gap arrangement. Since putting in place a new coach just before an important ICC tournament was far from ideal, the BCCI came up with the masterstroke of adding a trusted old hand to the team management. Dhoni’s reputation as a sharp decision-maker in whiteball cricket, and his cordial working relationship with both Kohli and Shastri went a long way in his return to the Indian dressing room. With Dhoni still active as an IPL cricketer and showing no inclination to pursue the job of India coach, the oneoff stint as a mentor is a win-win situation for everyone.

So you have to be a little more careful. Just take a little care. But the way we wrote Chalo Koi Baat Nahin, we didn’t face such challenges.” The comedy scene in India has become a lucrative profession over the years, compared to the early days. Amit, who has been a stand-up comedian since 2009, talks about how it evolved from a fraternity to a fully-fledged industry. “I’ve been around since 2009. When we started, it was very much like club comedy and there was not much money. We didn’t join it for money. Slowly, it moved from being a fraternity to an industry as the money started flowing in. ” He adds that it was a task to explain what stand-up comedy was in the beginning, as it didn’t have an overarching reach. “Initially, it was very tough to explain what stand-up is, and it was was limited to the the elite of Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. Now it has reached every city in India. Today, there are shows happening in Kanpur and Jabalpur. Standup comedy has grown a hundred, thousand times in the past few years,” Amit Tandon says. He adds, “Earlier, even to get five people in a room for an hour was tough. Now you look at 2016, Zakir fills up a 5000-seater stadium, back-to-back twice, 10,000 tickets in a show. So that’s the kind of a climb we have seen.”

Money Heist 5 cast talks about the ‘war’ in season finale: ‘We can feel the love from India here’

M

oney Heist season 5 had its big premiere on Netflix. The global hit took fans back inside the Bank of Spain where the gang is facing its biggest enemy to date – the army. The trailer and teasers of the latest season piqued the audience’s interest, and so did the various stills and BTS. Even its cast agreed that its finale season follows the war genre, loaded with intense action and gun battle. In an exclusive chat with indianexpress.com from Spain, actors Itziar Ituño (Lisbon), Darko Peric (Helsinki) and Rodrigo de la Serna (Palermo) got candid about the fate of their characters and what lies ahead for The Professor and his team in Money Heist. “Things have changed a lot from the first season but as you’ve seen in the promos, this season is full-on war. All the characters are full of adrenaline. It’s always been like that. It’s a heist, but I think this time it is more than that,” Darko said. Darko’s Helsinki has remained a core gang member

Marvel Studios’ superhero epic Eternals to release in India on November 5 during Diwali

from the first season. A tough one to crack, he’s lost his brother Oslo and closest friend Nairobi in the past seasons. According to Darko, “all the characters who get close to Helsinki suffer. So I think he has a lot of bad luck, but it’s going to happen.” He was pointing at Helsinki taking out all his anger and pain through the guns. While Helsinki has had a character graph from the first season, Rodrigo as Palermo joined the heist in its season three. Palermo, however hasn’t been the most trusted robber so far. He went rogue, helped Gandia break free and also became the reason behind Nairobi’s death. Does Rodrigo see his character as an anti-hero who might redeem himself in the episodes ahead? “I think he would. He was very hard hit by the loss of Berlin in the past seasons and Nairobi’s death also hit him very deeply. So I think he’s going to be looking for that redemption. I think he will find things in his colleague and friend Helsinki.”

to the vendor. The vendor’s president complied and ultimately paid a total of $1.15 million to a bank account bearing the name of a company Bhikha formed in Hong Kong: Lucena Limited. Bhikha further admitted in his plea agreement that, following transfer of official control of Lucena to his wife, he arranged for Lucena to become the third vendor retained by Cisco for Project New York. Between August 2014 and April 2017 Cisco paid Lucena, and its related company Bhikha established in Singapore, a total of $10.06 million for performing price-negotiation services under Project New York. Bhikha admitted in his plea agreement that he actively concealed his connection with Lucena from Cisco, including going so far as to having an imposter pose as Lucena’s CEO in a 2016 Cisco meeting held in Northern California. Cisco terminated Bhikha when his connection to Lucena came to light in 2017, noted the release. In his plea agreement Bhikha admitted that prior to his termination he never advised Cisco: (a) that he or his wife were employed by or had ownership, control, or financial interest in the Lucena entities; (b) that Bhikha or his wife had a personal interest in or personally benefitted from the payments that Cisco made to those entities; or (c) that he had requested and received kickback payments from a Cisco vendor.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA- An Indian American former senior director at Cisco Systems Aug. 27 was sentenced to 36 months in prison and ordered to pay more than $3 million in restitution to Cisco and the Internal Revenue Service following his wire fraud and tax convictions, according to a Department of Justice press release. Prithviraj “Roger” Bhikha, 52, a former senior director of Global Supplier Management of Cisco, was sentenced Aug. 25. A resident of San Francisco, Calif., he was convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aiding and assisting in the filing of a false and fraudulent tax return. He pleaded guilty to these crimes earlier pursuant to a plea agreement filed Nov. 19, 2020, said the release. n his November 2020 plea agreement, Bhikha stated he was employed at Cisco from 1999 to 2017, and in about 2013 Cisco assigned him to lead a new project called “Project New York.” Project New York’s goal was to enable Cisco to retain third-party vendors to negotiate savings with manufacturers on certain parts used by Cisco to assemble Cisco products. Bhikha admitted in his plea agreement that he received kickback payments from a vendor retained by Cisco to do Project New York work. Bhikha further admitted that he created his own company to serve as a vendor for Project

New York – despite Cisco’s prohibition against purchasing goods or services from its own employees – and concealed it from Cisco. As to kickback payments, Bhikha met in early 2014 with the president of one of Project New York’s first two vendors. In his plea agreement, Bhikha admitted he asked the executive to provide kickbacks to him from Cisco’s payments

Indian-American High School Student Develops Meal Order App

Aarav Navani

HiIndia Newsdesk SAN JOSE, CA- An Indian American junior at Evergreen Valley High School in San Jose, California, Aarav Navani, has been recognized by the East Side Union High School District Board of Trustees for the development of a meal order application for the more than 23,000 students of ESUHSD. As a freshman, Navani observed a problem in the lunch ordering process in which students were waiting too long for lunch and he wanted to find a way to remedy this issue, said a press release. After receiving district approval, he worked throughout the 2020 pandemic year with the district’s IT department and Julie Kasberger, director of Child Nutrition Services, to develop a meal order app. The young teenager was able to design a program that not only allows the students to customize their meals and pay online but also allows cafeteria workers to gather data to quickly assemble the lunches in advance and decrease the long lunch lines significantly. The district expects to save money by reducing food loss, increase productivity by assembling the meals in advance, and better data tracking of popular meals and the number of lunches served each day. “It is fantastic for students ordering and our team to be able to get ready the meals so efficiently,” said Kasberger. Navani and the team at ESUHSD used a relational database application, scripting languages, and RESTful API’s to design and develop the cloudbased application that works on multiple different phone platforms. He also worked with a UI designer to make the app appealing to students. “Aarav used his experience as a student and his skills as a programmer to make an app that will make lunchtime a joy,” said Randy Phelps, ESUHSD Chief Technology Officer. “To see young people developing applications that have an immediate and lasting impact for our students and staff is empowering and encouraging,” said Phelps.

Months after GHMC defeat, TRS works to regain lost ground

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is launching a drive to regain lost ground and strengthen the party in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area. In elections held last December, the ruling TRS received a big blow as it lost several seats to the BJP — the TRS’s tally came down from

99 seats in 2016 to 56 while the BJP’s tally went up from 4 to 47. Wh i l e t he re h a s b e e n a l ot of brainstorming in the party about the poor performance in GHMC elections, the party is now launching a concerted effort to regain the lost ground and strengthen the party at the grassroots level in the municipal wards. The party is also working to strengthen its base across the state with a major membership drive, and will soon hold organisational elections. Animal Husbandry Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav, who repres ents Sanathnagar in GHMC limits, said that they will hold a meeting Tuesday to discuss plans. This comes amid the BJP’s outreach programme with Telangana BJP president Bandi Sanjay taking out a Praja Sangram Yatra — covering 750 km in 55 days — which will conclude at Huzurabad on October 2.

India’s first building made of bio-bricks at IITHyderabad is a great example of ‘wealth from waste’ HiIndia Newsdesk The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Hyderabad on Thursday inaugurated India’s first building made of bio-bricks from agro-waste. Calling it a perfect illustration of ‘Wealth from Waste’, IIT-H Director BS Murthy said the institute will submit a proposal to the Ministry of Agriculture to promote its wider adoption by the rural community. Researchers at the IIT demonstrated that agricultural waste can be converted into sustainable materials which, in turn, can be used to build eco-friendly, costeffective structures. In April this year, the team secured a patent for the biobrick material and its manufacturing technology. The technology has been developed by research scholar Priyabrata Rautray under the supervision of Professor

Researchers at the IIT demonstrated that agricultural waste can be converted into sustainable materials which, in turn, can be used to build eco-friendly, cost-effective structures.

Deepak John Mathew at the Department of Design. “This innovation is going to be a game-changer for rural village

farmers as their agricultural waste will become an income generator for them. Also, this will give employment to them during their lean period,” Professor Mathew said. They have jointly published two research papers on bio-bricks at international conferences at ICED 2019, Delft University and ICoRD 2021, IIT Mumbai. According to the researchers, the material exhibits excellent thermal insulation and fire-retardant properties. When used in roofing and wall panelling, it can effectively reduce heat gain by 5 – 6 degrees. They realised that generation of ago-waste in the country was huge while the demand for regular bricks was growing exponentially, leading to the loss of fertile topsoil and more air pollution. “I sincerely hope farmers and villagers adopt this technology to build their homes,” Rautray said.

HiIndia Newsdesk Brazilian football great Pele has undergone surgery for a suspected colon tumor and is recovering, the hospital in Sao Paolo treating him announced on Monday. "The tumor was identified during routine cardiovascular and laboratory examinations and the material was sent for pathological analysis," said the Albert Einstein Hospital where 80-year-old Pele has been treated since August 31. The three-time World Cup winner posted a message on social media six days ago, saying he was "in good health" and denying rumors that he had passed out. "I went to the hospital for routine examinations that I had not been able to perform before because of the pandemic," he explained in his August 31 post, without mentioning that he had remained in hospital. Pele, whose real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, has been in poor health in recent years, and has had various spells in hospital, most recently in April 2019, in Paris, because of a severe urinary tract infection

Last month, the police filed a charge sheet. The Indian Express spoke to two victims who are adults now. Asking them to come for personal coaching, isolating them from the rest of the group and then touching them inappropriately during massage when nobody was around is how two former international athletes recall some of the sexual abuse by coach P Nagarajan when they were teenagers. One athlete, a national junior record holder in her time, said being an introvert she was afraid to talk back to the coach. The other athlete tried to commit suicide as a teenager and had nervous breakdowns. Now in her late 30s, she says she has struggled with intimacy, forming relationships and found it hard to trust older men ever since.

Jasprit Bumrah fastest Indian pacer to 100 Test wickets, goes past Kapil Dev

In a shocking decision, Pakistan head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis have stepped down from their respective roles one month before the T20 World Cup. The Pakistan Cricket Board on Monday announced that Misbah and Waqar have resigned and that former Pakistan Test players, Saqlain Mushtaq and Abdul Razzaq would be interim coaches for the time being. The sudden changes coincide with the induction of former Test captain Ramiz Raja as the new Chairman of the board on September 13.

Shardul Thakur’s contribution is massive, says Jasprit Bumrah HiIndia Newsdesk Jasprit Bumrah will remember this day for time to come. After getting nominated for the ICC Player of the Month award, Bumrah has become the fastest Indian to reach 100 Test wickets, going past the 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev. Bumrah achieved the feat in 24 matches in comparison to Dev's 25. The other two Indian bowlers within sniffing distance of Dev and Bumrah are Irfan Pathan (28) and Mohammed Shami (29). Bumrah had made his Test debut against South Africa in Cape Town in January 2018 and since then has been an integral part of the Virat Kohli-led Indian team.

Not looking to survive in game, we are here to win: Virat Kohli after Oval win

The match was effectively over when Shardul Thakur dismissed England captain Joe Root for 36 with an innocuous delivery which the in-form batsman dragged on to his stumps. Jadeja kept bowling into the rough to trouble the batsmen, claiming the wickets of Hameed and England vicecaptain Moeen Ali. Praising the character of the current Indian team, skipper Virat Kohli said, “Well, I think the best thing about both the games has been the character the team has shown. We are not looking to survive in this game, we are here to win.” “Really proud of the character the team has shown. I said at Lord’s as well, I am proud of the character among the top three bowling performances

HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk

I have witnessed as India captain. It’s quite relative to what you call a flat. The conditions were hot and we knew were

in with an opportunity when Jadeja was bowling into the rough. The bowlers were good with the reverse swing today. We believed we could get all 10 wickets, we had the belief.” “As soon as the ball started reversing, Bumrah said give me the ball. He bowled that spell and swung the game in our favour with those two huge wickets. I think you pointed his performance. Rohit’s innings was fantastic. What Shardul has done in this game stands out. His two fifties deflated the opposition. I think he batted well in both innings. We never go towards analysis, statistics and numbers. We know what we need to focus on and we take a collective decision as a group.”

HiIndia Newsdesk India pacer Jasprit Bumrah on Monday praised bowling allrounder Shardul Thakur’s “massive contribution” in the fourth Test against England, which India won by 157 runs. “It (Shardul’s contribution) is massive. He (Shardul) played two crucial knocks that really helped us to gain momentum, even in the first innings he changed the momentum and the momentum clearly shifted in our favour,” Bumrah said at the post-match press conference after his team recorded a staggering 157-run win over England to go 2-1 up in the five Test match series. And with the bowling effort as well, he chipped in with crucial wickets. His effort was massive and it is always necessary to have that fifth bowler, who gives you that comfort and does the job for the team,” added Bumrah, as he was effusive in his praise for the Mumbai bowler.

"Healthy eating can sometimes turn into something that is not so healthy and can drain you of energy if you are too restricted," said Yasi Ansari, a registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spokesperson.

Health

How your 'healthy' lifestyle can be making you tired

Here are a few ways a so-called "healthy" diet can make you sluggish -- and what you can do to get your energy back on track.

Cutting too many calories "If you are trying to lose weight and you reduce your calories too dramatically, this can leave you without the right amount of energy or fuel that you need to get through the day," said Elizabeth DeRobertis, a registered dietitian and director of the Nutrition Center at Scarsdale Medical Group, White Plains Hospital. Food provides the energy you need to stay focused and productive throughout the day. And though sometimes people think if they want to lose weight, they should eat as little as possible, this doesn't work for the long term, said DeRobertis, the creator of the GPS Weight Loss Program, an online self-paced weight loss program. When someone becomes too restrictive with their intake, metabolism can slow down, and you may feel drained of energy. "You also end up too hungry ... and end up overeating as a result," DeRobertis said. "If you are feeling low in energy, check in on the energy you're taking in," said Melissa Majumdar, an Atlanta-based registered dietitian and certified obesity and weight management specialist. "Start with adding an additional 1 to 2 ounces of lean protein, a half cup of whole grains, or 1 tablespoon of a healthy fat and reanalyze."

Cutting too many carbs Going low carb can also make you feel lousy. Not only can eating too few carbs make you feel tired and irritable from low blood sugar; it

"If someone chooses to eat in a vegetarian or vegan style, but they are not careful about obtaining enough vitamin B12 and iron (from supplements and plant sources), they may end up with anemia and a resulting feeling of fatigue," DeRobertis explained. Foods high in iron include beef, ironfortified cereals, spinach and beans. If you consume plant sources of iron, it's wise to add some vitamin C to enhance absorption. "An example might be a spinach salad with a small glass of orange juice or a lentil soup with chopped tomatoes," Ansari said. Vegans should also be aware of a possible vitamin B12 deficiency. "A B12 deficiency may take years to develop, so supplementing in advance if you don't eat animal foods like meat, fish, eggs and dairy is key," Majumdar said. Nutritional yeast can also add some vitamin B12 but would need to be eaten daily to provide enough, Majumdar added.

Eating too many carbs Having too many carbohydrates in one sitting can also contribute to sluggishness. Even healthy carbohydrates turn to sugar in the body, and our pancreas, in response, produces insulin, to keep our blood sugar stable. "If someone has too many carbohydrates in one sitting -- even if it's healthy carbs, like brown rice, beans, sweet potato, whole grain pasta, or quinoa -- for some, too many can raise blood sugar, and high blood sugar makes us feel tired and lethargic," DeRobertis said. (While this often happens among individuals with diabetes, it can happen to anyone who eats too many carbs in one sitting, she said.) Pay attention to how you feel after different meal combinations, and if you notice that you feel tired after a high-carb meal, consider spacing out your carbohydrates during the day, DeRobertis advised.

Exercising too much

Eating too infrequently Going too long without eating can also make you feel tired. "Some people experience sleepiness or sluggishness as a sign to eat more instead of the traditional hunger cues," said Majumdar, who is also the metabolic and bariatric coordinator at Emory University Hospital Midtown. "If two or three hours after a meal you are low in energy, plug in a balanced snack of fiber and protein, like fresh fruit with a handful of nuts or a small bag of edamame." "Identifying when your body starts to get hungry can help you better understand how to be most consistent with your nutrition and its timing to ensure your energy is stable throughout the day and you're supporting your body in meeting its needs," Ansari said.

You're eating clean, enjoying lots of fruits and vegetables, cutting out meat and are much more plant-based. You've also banned bread, cookies and cake from the house. There is just one problem: You can't seem to stay awake and alert during the day. On the surface this lifestyle may seem healthy, but it may include some behaviors that are actually zapping you of energy. can also lead to dehydration, which can cause fatigue. "For every gram of carbohydrate stored in the body, there is approximately 2 to 3 grams of water retained," DeRobertis explained. But when someone reduces their carbohydrate intake too dramatically, water is released, and it's possible to become dehydrated. "When someone feels a dip in energy in the afternoon, I always think of a plant that is wilted, and in need of water," DeRobertis said. "When we water the plant, it perks back up. And I picture that is what happens to our

cells when we are not well-hydrated enough during the day." Cutting carbs, especially cookies and sugary treats, is perfectly fine, but make sure you're not skimping on fiber-rich carbs, like fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Not eating a balanced vegetarian diet Banning animal proteins as part of a vegetarian diet isn't necessarily unhealthy, but it's important to be conscious about consuming a balanced intake of all nutrients.

Overexercising can also make you feel tired. "How much is too much depends on the person, other demands in their life, stress levels, overall health and fitness levels, and the types of exercise," Majumdar said. Underfueling for a workout can also be a contributor to fatigue. "During exercise, the body typically burns a combination of fat and carbohydrates. If you are not eating enough carbohydrates, it is more difficult to fuel the workout, and if this pattern progresses, the body's stored carbohydrates, called glycogen, aren't restocked," Majumdar said. This can leave you feeling drained, frustrated and demoralized with your workout, according to Majumdar. "Take inventory of how you feel before and after exercise sessions and consider adding carbohydrates or calories to your intake, or reducing your exercise to keep energy levels balanced," Majumdar said. If exercise is eating into sleeping time, this can also impact energy levels. Getting an adequate amount of sleep not only gives you energy, it also helps the body to actively repair muscles and tissues used during exercise, according to Majumdar.

Sara Ali Khan serves style inspiration for the upcoming festive season

W

ith the festive season afoot, it’s that time of year where we start reaching for our favourite traditional ensembles. From flowy lehengas, anarkalis, classic kurtas and saris to modern Indo-Western silhouettes, the growing number of options may at times leave us feeling overwhelmed. So we took to Sara Ali Khan’s Instagram feed, whose traditional wardrobe has always been on our fashion radar, for a much-needed timely style inspiration. Ali Khan wears a fully embroidered lehenga or a simple white cotton kurta with the same sense of ease that she instills in everything she wears.

Lady in red

In an all-red lehenga by Seema Gujral, Ali Khan makes a case for reds beyond the altar. The crimson lehenga features a sweetheart neckline and a sheer dupatta. Khan adds an extra punch of red with a matching share of eyeliner and finishes her look with diamond jewellery to keep it contemporary.

Pretty in pink A bubblegum-pink lehenga may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but Ali Khan definitely has us warming up to the idea of one. In a striking chikankari lehenga by Manish Malhotra, featuring dual tones of pink holographic sequins, Khan looks ethereal. The outfit is a perfect mix of traditional and modern techniques.

I encourage you to be kind: Lady Gaga "What do we do now? My answer of k indness is simple, but it’s mine because right now more than usual, we’re trying to talk to each other."

Simple steps for beginners to try makeup at home • Everyone wants that flawless look. That is possible with a simple product like a BB cream which is a tinted moisturiser. It’s extremely easy to apply and for those who need extra coverage, they can apply a little bit of concealer in their problem areas and blend. • Also recommended are skin tints. It’s a creambased blush that can just be applied to the apples of the cheeks just with a finger to give you a blushing look or a bronze tone for a sun-kissed finish. You can use it on the eyes, too. • Kohl or colourful eye pencils add a pop of colour and definition to the eyes. Smudge with your fingers for a ‘smokey’ finish. Try a blue or grey for a night out or a romantic dinner. • Don’t forget to leave the house with loads of mascara. Your lashes should make a statement from the moment you enter any room. • Lipsticks now are readily available with easy application wands and are long-lasting, so no smudging. • Tinted lip balms are easy to use and easy to touch-up. • For those nervous about doing their eyebrows, blading is the latest technique to get your eyebrows done and it lasts you a few months.

Make spicy dal gujiyas with this recipe by chef Sanjeev Kapoor Ingredients 1/4 cup – Split Bengal gram (chana dal) Soaked in water for 3-4 hours 1 1/2 cups – Wheat flour | 1/4 cup – Split black gram skinless (dhuli urad dal) soaked for 4 hours | 1/4 teaspoon – Turmeric powder | Salt to taste | 3 tbsp – Oil | Asafoetida a pinch | 1/2 tsp – Cumin seeds | Garlic paste | 1 tsp – Red chilli powder | 1 tsp – Amchur powder | 2 tbsp – Fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped

Method *Knead flour with sufficient water to make a stiff dough. Cover it with a damp cloth and set aside for some time. *Boil urad dal and chana dal with turmeric powder, salt and sufficient water. Drain and grind coarsely. *Heat 2 tbsps oil in a non-stick pan. Add asafoetida, cumin seeds and garlic paste and sauté lightly. Add the ground dal and mix. *Now add red chilli powder, amchur, salt and coriander leaves and mix well. Transfer the mixture into a bowl. *Divide the dough into equal portions and roll into balls. Apply a little oil on the balls and roll them into small puris. *Place a portion of the dal mixture on one side of each puri and fold the other side over in the shape of gujiyas. *Heat adequate water in a boiler. Add the gujiyas and poach them. *Heat the remaining oil in a non stick pan. Place the gujiyas in the pan and cook till evenly golden. Sprinkle a little red chilli powder and amchur on top. *Garnish with a mint sprig and serve hot.

peaking to the Class Of 2020, singer and actor Lady Gaga gave an impassioned speech. “People can do hard things. You can do hard things. You can rip up and replant the forest to be a vision only you have. Sometimes being kind is hard. I’m sure you could think of a few unkind classmates, friends, family members, strangers, people, teachers from your school, or even times that you’ve acted unkindly. Even if you’ve witnessed, though, a lack of kindness, still moreover that does not cannibalise the ability for people to do hard things. So since being kind can mean doing a hard thing, sometimes even in the absence of kindness, people can still do the hard thing and be kind,” she said. “I encourage you to be kind. I do this to set the example I wish to with the tremendous privilege I have in giving you this commencement speech today. When I include that bit about kindness, that’s me making sure during this moment between us, that I am equipped with my morals, values, and principles for a very important topic,” she added. “What do we do now? My answer of kindness is simple, but it’s mine because right now more than usual, we’re trying to talk to each other. Let’s talk, but just as you did in your classrooms almost every day, let’s also listen. If we don’t listen, we don’t learn,” she said in conclusion.
