Speaking at a White House briefing on Covid-19 on Tuesday, Fauci said the variant, which was first identified in India, now makes up more than 20 per cent of all new cases in the US, a significant increase from nearly 10 per cent two weeks ago. “Similar to the situation in the UK, the Delta variant is currently the greatest threat in the US to our attempt to eliminate Covid-19, Fauci told reporters during a virtual news conference here. However, the good news is that the US vaccines are effective against the

After completing my bachelor’s degree in pharmacy, I decided to do a Masters degree alongside my job in the pharmaceutical industry. But food has been a constant passion for me. I always wanted to do something in the food industry but I was so far away from it. I have been watching MasterChef since the day it started airing in Australia. I never thought I would get through to the judges round but there was no other way of finding out. So, I went for it and submitted my application.

I never tried to look for it to be honest. It was my curiosity as a child and I always wanted to know what makes a sabzi or a certain dish taste so good. I could stand next to an aloo tikki vendor for hours watching him cook because I found that so fascinating.

While the new Covid vaccine policy came into effect across the country on Monday, Telangana perhaps remains the only State that has adopted a measured, practical, and logical approach of vaccinating individuals who need them the most, instead of opting for mass vaccination at a time when vaccine availability is bogged down by supply-chain constraints. On Monday, when many Indian States exhausted their limited vaccine stock by taking up mass vaccination, health authorities in Telangana focused on channelling the vaccines to members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), who form a vital link among individuals in the community across the State. “We too can exhaust our entire vaccine stockpile in a day by vaccinating everybody. What will happen to the vaccination drive when we run out of stocks the next day? The new vaccine policy has come into force, but so far there is no change or improvement in the allotment of vaccines to the States, as it would take some more time.

HiIndia Newsdesk Hyderabad: The Telangana State government has requested the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) chairman, J Chandrashekhar Iyer to take immediate action to restrain Andhra Pradesh from carrying out works on Rayalaseema Pumping System and upgradation of Pothireddypadu Head Regulator, Banakacharla Complex to draw 80,000 cusecs from the foreshore of Srisailam reservoir and other related works. Special Chief Secretary to Government (Irrigation and CAD Department) Dr Rajat Kumar, in a letter to Iyer, said these works were progressing at a brisk pace in violation of the NGT order and urged him to prevent illegal diversion of Krishna River waters. “As you are aware, the NGT had directed the AP government not to go ahead with the execution of the RLIS without obtaining prior environmental clearance,” he said. The NGT order dated February 24, 2021, directed that “the KRMB, on the basis of the complaint made by the Telangana Government in this regard, are at liberty to go into the question and if it is found that there is any violation, they are at liberty to take appropriate action agai-nst the fourth” respondent (AP) in accordance with law apart from the applicant to approach this tribunal at that stage.”

After cracking the whip against eveteasers through SHE Teams regularly and initiating stern action against those harassing women through mobile phones, the WSW has decided to start an application-based call centre to help women facing domestic violence. The number of telephone calls received by the department from such women increased after the lockdown was imposed to contain the spread of Covid-19 in the second wave.

The Bedis are said to be the direct descendants of Guru Nanak. The Bedis of Dera Baba Nanak are certainly his descendants and I presume there are others too.

You became a Buddhist monk for one year in Rangoon while you were young. You had your hair shorn, lived on alms...what was the experience like? I was taught Vipassana by Mahasi Sayadaw. He’s the one who taught Goenka ji. Learning Vipassana at that age was life altering. It was a way of becoming much more aware of yourself, of your surroundings. It tells you how your thoughts run you and how to calm your thoughts and look into the spaces in between to find your real essence. It instilled a belief that you need to be compassionate towards other beings on this planet, who are suffering and who are less fortunate than you.

Even last spring when the pandemic shut down New York, nearly ever y neighborhood shop that sold takeout coffee managed to stay open, and I was amazed at how many people ventured forth to start their stay-at-home days with a favorite storemade brew. One elderly friend who prepandemic had traveled from Brooklyn to Manhattan by subway to buy her preferred blend of ground coffee arranged to have it delivered. “Well worth the added cost,” she told me. I use machine-brewed coffee from pods, and last summer when it seemed reasonably safe for me to shop I stocked up on a year’s supply of the blends I like. (Happily, the pods are now recyclable.) All of us should be happy to know that whatever it took to secure that favorite cup of Joe may actually have helped to keep us healthy. The latest assessments of the health effects of coffee and caffeine, its main active ingredient, are reassuring indeed. Their consumption has been linked to a reduced risk of all kinds of ailments, including Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, gallstones, depression, suicide, cirrhosis, liver cancer, melanoma and prostate cancer. In fact, in numerous studies conducted throughout the world, consuming four or five eight-ounce cups of coffee (or about 400 milligrams of caffeine) a day has been associated with reduced death rates. In a study of more than 200,000 participants followed for up to 30 years, those who drank three to five cups of coffee a day, with or without caffeine, were 15 percent less likely to die early from all causes than were people who shunned coffee. Perhaps most dramatic was a 50 percent reduction in the risk of suicide among both men and women who were moderate coffee drinkers, perhaps by boosting production of brain chemicals that have antidepressant effects. As a report published last summer by a research team at the Harvard School of Public Health concluded, although current evidence may not warrant recommending coffee or caffeine to prevent disease, for most people drinking coffee in moderation “can be part of a healthy lifestyle.” It wasn’t always thus. I’ve lived through decades of sporadic warnings that coffee could be a health hazard. Over the years, coffee’s been deemed a cause of conditions such as heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, pancreatic cancer, anxiety disorder, nutrient deficiencies, gastric reflux disease, migraine, insomnia, and premature death. As recently as 1991, the World Health Organization listed coffee as a possible carcinogen. In some of the now-discredited studies, smoking, not coffee drinking (the two often went hand-in-hand) was responsible for the purported hazard.. “These periodic scares have given the public a very distorted view,” said Dr. Walter C. Willett, professor of nutrition

Caffeine locks into the same receptor in the brain as the neurotransmitter adenosine, a natural sedative. Dr. Willett, a co-author of the Harvard report, told me, “I really do love coffee, but I have it only occasionally because otherwise I don’t sleep very well. Lots of people with sleep problems don’t recognize the connection to coffee.” In discussing his audiobook on caffeine with Terry Gross on NPR last winter, Michael Pollan called caffeine “the enemy of good sleep” because it interferes with deep sleep. He confessed that after the challenging task of weaning himself from coffee, he “was sleeping like a teenager again.” Dr. Willett, now 75, said, “You don’t have to get to zero consumption to minimize the impact on sleep,” but he acknowledged that a person’s sensitivity to caffeine “probably increases with age.” People also vary widely in how rapidly they metabolize caffeine, enabling some to sleep soundly after drinking caffeinated coffee at dinner while others have trouble sleeping if they have coffee at lunch. But even if you can fall asleep readily after an evening coffee, it may disrupt your ability to get adequate deep sleep, Mr. Pollan states in his forthcoming book, “This Is Your Mind on Plants.” Dr. Willett said it’s possible to develop a degree of tolerance to caffeine’s effect

on sleep. My 75-year-old brother, an inveterate imbiber of caffeinated coffee, claims it has no effect on him. However, acquiring a tolerance to caffeine could blunt its benefit if, say, you wanted it to help you stay alert and focused while driving or taking a test. Caffeine is one of more than a thousand chemicals in coffee, not all of which are beneficial. Among others with positive effects are polyphenols and antioxidants. Polyphenols can inhibit the growth of cancer cells and lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes; antioxidants, which have antiinflammatory effects, can counter both heart disease and cancer, the nation’s leading killers. None of this means coffee is beneficial regardless of how it’s prepared. When brewed without a paper filter, as in French press, Norwegian boiled coffee, espresso or Turkish coffee, oily chemicals called diterpenes come through that can raise artery-damaging LDL cholesterol. However, these chemicals are virtually absent in both filtered and instant coffee. Knowing I have a cholesterol problem, I dissected a coffee pod and found a paper filter lining the plastic cup. Whew! Also countering the potential health benefits of coffee are popular additions some people use, like cream and sweet syrups, that can convert this calorie-free beverage into a calorie-rich dessert. “All the things people put into coffee can result in a junk food with as many as 500 to 600 calories,” Dr. Willett said. A 16-ounce Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino, for example, has 51 grams of sugar, 15 grams of fat (10 of them saturated) and 370 calories. With iced coffee season approaching, more people are likely to turn to coldbrew coffee. Now rising in popularity, cold brew counters coffee’s natural acidity and the bitterness that results when boiling water is poured over the grounds. Cold brew is made by steeping the grounds in cold water for several hours, then straining the liquid through a paper filter to remove the grounds and harmful diterpenes and keep the flavor and caffeine for you to enjoy. Cold brew can also be made with decaffeinated coffee. Decaf is not totally without health benefits. As with caffeinated coffee, the polyphenols it contains have antiinflammatory properties that may lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes and cancer.

USCIS Announces New Policy to Give Work Permit to U Visa for Victims of Domestic Violence and Crime HiIndia Newsdesk

USCIS has approved more than 170,000 petitions since 2009 with only 56 percent of them for principals, i.e., the actual alien victim. Given limited adjudicator resources and the surge of petitions filed over recent years, there are hundreds of thousands of petitions that are pending, meaning that USCIS has not yet adjudicated the claim.

WASHINGTON, DC- The Biden administration has announced a new policy for U visa applicants that could potentially allow every illegal alien in the country to obtain a work permit. Rather than enhancing policies for aliens who are legitimate victims of crime (which is what the U visa is supposed to be for), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will now give out four-year renewable work permits to any illegal alien who merely applies for a U visa. The U visa was created in 2000 as part of the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act to encourage alien

victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, gangs, and human trafficking to assist law enforcement in prosecuting offenders. Congress set the annual cap at 10,000 visas, but unlike other visa categories, derivatives do not count against the cap.

Indian American Businessman Convicted of Hiring Hit Man to Kill Estranged Wife

While there, he asked another inmate if he knew anyone who could kill his estranged wife. The inmate said he knew such a person. In June 2018, under the direction of law enforcement, the inmate introduced Lingala to an undercover agent posing as a hitman. In August 2018, the Indian American businessman and the undercover hitman agreed to meet outside a New Jersey shopping center. Lingala gave the undercover hitman his estranged wife’s home address and other coordinates.

The India that Silicon Valley once so loved has long given way to a different one: an increasingly authoritarian regime that wants even tighter control over information dissemination. It’s an India that’s not only willing to bully the very companies it once welcomed in order to firm up its grip, but also one that’s attempting to craft its own parallel social mediasphere as a bargaining chip to Silicon Valley: Either you play by our rules, or we don’t need you. In 2016, India blocked Facebook’s “Free Basics” initiative, an attempt by the company to offer free internet access through a network of Facebookapproved sites, out of concern that the program would have created unfair tiers for internet access; that same year, Amazon found itself disfavored by the Indian government as it attempted to punc ture the sub continent’s e-commerce market and compete with native Indian companies in the sector. Far more worr ying were the accounts of social impact. Again in 2016, whistleblowers from 2014 BJP campaigns came out publicly about the kind of work they reportedly did for the party’s “IT cells”—namely, coordinated efforts to target and troll BJP opponents across various social platforms, spread misinformation, and counter and shut down criticisms of Modi and his ideological brethren. More and more stories were reported of calls for mob violence and rampant misinformation spreading throughout WhatsApp, which continued throughout the pivotal 2019 election that Modi and the BJP won in a sweep. Modi, who was hailed upon his first election as “India’s first social media prime minister” for his campaign team’s digital savvy, leveraged this social media knowhow to become a darling of Silicon Valley in ways previous Indian leaders never did. His “Digital India” campaign (whose website, incidentally, has pretty horrid design) was praised by various major tech CEOs for its goal of turning India into a utopia of tech innovation; the prime minister visited California-based corporations and held both public and private events with executives from Facebook, Twitter, Apple, and Tesla; investors went gaga over India’s domestic startups. The founding director for Twitter India joined the company in 2012 with hopes that the platform would help strengthen democracy in the country. It once may have seemed that India, which already had its own “Silicon Valley” for tech innovation within the city of Bangalore, would become both one of the primary drivers and biggest beneficiaries of an interconnected world.
