Washington: Indian American community leaders on Monday condemned the vandalism of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in New York and said this is disrespect to Gandhi and Martin Luther King, two leaders who sought to eradicate hate.

A life-sized bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi was vandalised in a New York City neighbourhood on Saturday, an act strongly condemned as 'despicable' by the Consulate General of India.

The eight-foot-high statue, located in Manhattan's Union Square, was defaced by some unknown persons, the consulate in New York had said."As an African American practitioner of the Hindu dharma, I am deeply offended that anyone would

disrespect Mahatma Gandhi, who inspired MLK (Martin Luther King) to take up the mission of non-violence, which inspired major changes in society that are still positively impacting our lives today," said Balabhadra Bhattacarya Dasa (Benny Tillman), president of the Vedic Friends Association.

Utsav Chakrabarti, executive director of the HinduPACT said that this is not the first time that a statue of Gandhi has been vandalised in the US. "In the past few years, statues of Mahatma Gandhi have been vandalised by groups aligned with radical Islamists and their sympathisers in South Asian communities," he claimed.

The closure of three Canadian colleges run by a family with a chequered history has left nearly 2,000 students, mostly from Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat, in the lurch with the immigration status of at least half of them under threat.

The three private colleges — Collège de comptabilité et de secrétariat du Québec, College de I’Estrie and M College in Montreal city — and a recruiting firm, all owned by the Mastantuono family, filed for creditor protection in mid-January. After spending lakhs on fee and travel, the students have lost their student status and their visa and other documents have become invalid.

According to information, 1,173 students were studying in person at the three colleges in Montreal while 637 were pursuing online classes from home in Punjab and other places. They had been eagerly awaiting on-campus learning to begin to shift base to Canada. While some of the parents lost their life’s savings, others had raised loans to send their wards abroad. Raising the issue with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, CPI MP Binoy Viswam said the students had been forced to take collective action seeking refund of visa and tuition fee and the opportunity to complete their education.

Six Indian call centre companies and their directors have been charged by US authorities in an alleged conspiracy to defraud Americans by posing as officials from the government pension system and the tax agency in tens of millions of phone calls. Announcing the charges filed in an Atlanta court, Federal Prosecutor Kurt Erskine said on Thursday: "These India-based call centres allegedly scared their victims

and stole their money, including some victims' entire life savings.

The call centres and their directors placed the initial scam calls and the provider of the internet phone service known as VoIP for warded those calls into this country to attempt to defraud Americans, according to the Department.

The six companies and their directors were charged with conspiring with a company that provides telephone services over the internet, E Sampark, and its director, Guarav Gupta, "to forward tens of millions of scam calls to American consumers", the Justice Department said. That company and Gupta had been charged in November 2021 in connection with the alleged scam.

he Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court Wednesday constituted a three-judge bench, including himself, to hear a batch of petitions questioning a ban on the use of hijabs in a few pre-university colleges in the state after a single-judge bench of the court had decided to refer the pleas to a larger bench saying the case involved larger Constitutional issues.

Headed by Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, the three-judge bench, referred to as a full bench of the High Court, will also include Justice Krishna S Dixit, who referred the matter to a larger bench, and Justice Khazi Jaibunnisa Mohiuddin. Justice Mohiuddin is a woman judge who took oath as an additional judge of the High Court in March last year.

The special bench will hear Thursday a total of five petitions on the hijab row on behalf of 18 girls from colleges in the Udupi region. Significantly, the constitution of a larger bench is contrary to the Karnataka High Court rules, which prescribe that a reference to a full bench can be made only by a two-judge bench. The larger bench hearing also takes away a layer of intra-court appeal. A ruling by a single-judge bench can be appealed before a two-judge bench of the High Court but a ruling by a full bench can only be challenged before the Supreme Court. Earlier on Wednesday, the single-judge bench of Justice Dixit, which had started hearing the matter on Tuesday, said in an order: “This court after hearing the

matter for some time is of a considered opinion that (given)… the enormous public importance of the questions involved, the batch of these cases may be heard by a larger bench if the Honorable Chief Justice decides, in his discretion.”

“Whether wearing of hijab is a part of essential religious practice in Islam is the jugular vein of all these matters. In support of an affirmative claim, petitioners rely upon three decisions of three neighbouring High Courts, (i.e., Bombay, Madras and Kerala), which the respondent-state also seeks to bank upon, and several decisions of the Apex Court. The said question along with others needs to be answered in the light of Constitutional guarantees to religious minorities,” Justice Dixit said in his order.

State Congress chief D K Shivakumar alleged that a BJP Minister from the Shivamogga region was involved in procuring and distributing saffron shawls and headgear worn by students during protests to oppose the use of hijab. He also asserted that students raised a Hindutva flag at a Shivamogga college on a pole meant to hoist the national flag and the state flag on special occasions.State Home Minister Araga Jnanendra, who hails from Shivamogga, alleged that “hidden hands” were behind the pro-hijab protests in Udupi. Udupi BJP MLA Udupi Raghupathy Bhat claimed that the girls were “secretly trained by a group to raise the hijab issue since there were no objections earlier”.

Hyderabad: Allegedly upset over losing his mother, a man died by suicide in Durgam Cheruvu in Madhapur.

The victim was identified as A Chandrakanth (27), who works for a pest control company, was a resident of Bansilalpet in Secunderabad.

Police said Chandrakanth’s mother passed away about seven months ago due to chronic illness and since then, he was upset and mostly stayed isolated from his family and friends. He left the house on Sunday, leaving the mobile phone behind and is suspected to have come to the lake and jumped into it. His body was found late evening on Tuesday.

City Brief News 87% of adults in Tamil Nadu have antibodies against Covid-19 Tamil Nadu’s health department said on Wednesday that 87 per cent of those above 18 years old in the state had antibodies against the coronavirus.

The findings are from a seroprevalence survey conducted in December 2021 by 1,076 teams of 30 members each who examined 32,245 people in the rural and urban areas of the state. Seroprevalence, or the number of persons in a population who test positive for the disease, was 32 per cent in November 2020, 29 per cent in April 2021 and 70 per cent in August 2021.

Lata Mangeshkar's debut on radio happened 80 years ago. She herself shared this fond memory on her social media account. She said that on December 16, 1941, she sang two songs for the first time in a radio studio.

On January 27, 1963 during the backdrop of the India-China war, Lata Mangeshkar sang Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon in the presence of the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, bringing him to tears.

She was also awarded the title and insignia of 'Officier de la Legion d'Honneur' - Officer of Legion of Honour -by France in 2009. This is the highest French civilian award.

Your prayers are precious." The singer's fans and well-wishers around the globe will continue to do that as they listen to their favourite Lata Mangeshkar song. Her contribution to the world of music earned her the biggest and the most prestigious awards in India. She was given the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989.

With songs like Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya from Mughal E Azam in 1960, Inhi Logo Ne from Meena Kumari's Pakeezah in 1972, Lata Mangeshkar was an unstoppable force who sang in over 500 films with the country's leading music composers of the times be it Naushad, RD Burman, Shankar Jaikishan, Anand Milind, Nadeem Shravan, Jatin Lalit and AR Rahman.

Even in the 90s, she continued to be the most popular singer among A-list filmmakers like Yash Chopra, who had a Lata song in almost all his movies including Chandni, Lamhe, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge, Dil

To Pagal Hai, Mohabbatein and even his last film Veer Zaara in 2004. Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman too worked with her, they worked together for Zubeida, Rang De Basanti and Lagaan.

In her book, Ritu Nanda, Raj Kapoor's daughter, revealed that Lata Mangeshkar was the inspiration behind Raj Kapoor's Satyam Shivam Sundaram and he wanted to cast her in the film. A quote in the book 'Raj Kapoor' says: "I visualised the story of a man falling for a woman with an ordinary countenance but a golden voice and wanted to cast Lata Mangeshkar in the role."

Being a Maharashtrian, Lata Mangeshkar also sang for popular Marathi films made by Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Vasant Prabhu, Srinivas Khale and Sudhir Phadke. Lata songs in Kannada and Bengali became huge hits. She sang in Assamese as well under the guidance of Bhupen Hazarika.

Ms Mangeshkar was taken to the intensive care unit on January 8 after testing positive for COVID-19. On Saturday, her condition had deteriorated again and she had to be put on ventilator support. She was under medical observation. Lata Mangeshkar was being treated for both pneumonia and COVID-19.

Her symptoms were mild but she was in ICU because of her age, family said. Over the next few weeks, Ms Mangeshkar showed signs of improvement. However, on Saturday, hospital authorities said that Lata Mangeshkar had been put back on the ventilator after her health deteriorated, news agency ANI reported.

Lata Mangeshkar, a recipient of the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Awards, was an icon of Indian cinema, having sung playback for an extensive list of Hindi films; she also sang in several regional languages including

Marathi and Bengali. Ms Mangeshkar, who belonged to a prominent musical family, also composed music as well as produced a handful of films. She was popularly known as the ‘Nightingale of India.’

Lata Mangeshkar, born in 1929, was the eldest of five siblings, among them singer Asha Bhonsle who visited Mangeshkar in hospital after she was taken to ICU. Their father was classical musician Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, who gave the young Lata Mangeshkar her first music lesson. In 1942, when her father died, 13-year-old Lata Mangeshkar began her career in music, juggling singing with acting parts in Marathi films. In 1945, Ms Mangeshkar had an early hit in the song Aayega Aanewala from the film Mahal, starring Madhubala. From there, Lata Mangeshkar’s voice and career soared to the greatest of heights. US university in $250m payout for doctor’s sex abuse HiIndia Newsdesk

The University of California has agreed to pay nearly $250m (£185m) to over 200 women who allege they were sexually assaulted by a campus gynaecologist.

Mu l t i p l e w o m e n a c c u s e t h e university’s Los Angeles site (UCLA) of deliberately hiding James Heaps’ alleged sexual abuse of patients.

Mr Heaps was based at the UCLA student health centre during his 35year career between 1983 and 2018.

Hundreds of women, some of whom had cancer, say they were abused by him.

The university did not begin investigating complaints against Mr Heaps until 2017. It has been accused in hundreds of lawsuits of deliberately hiding the gynaecologist’s alleged

sexual abuse of patients.

His medical licence was suspended by a judge in 2019 for the duration of the sex abuse case. The university said it hoped the financial settlement would provide “healing and closure” for the women involved.

Mr Heaps faces 21 criminal counts of sexual abuse against seven women and has pleaded not guilty. “Although there is some consolation in that, my heart breaks for all the women who were not spared, all the women who suffered after me, because UCLA refused to act.”

‘New India’ is China-nirbhar,” he posted on Twitter today. According to the project website, the 216-feet statue of Ramanujacharya in Hyderabad was made by a Chinese corporation. The contract for the Rs. 135 crore statue was awarded to China’s Aerosun Corporation in 2015.

The statue was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 5. The statue, which is among the tallest metallic statues in sitting position in the world, is a tribute to the Hindu saint Sri Ramanujacharya.

It is located in a 45-acre complex on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The Rs1,000-crore project was funded entirely by donations from devotees globally.

What is Chinese tea?

Chinese tea comes from one plant, the Camellia sinensis.

Similarly to wine, which comes from grapes, there are many varietals that taste, smell and are produced differently that results in different types of teas.

Tea educator Shunan Teng explains the many benefits of drinking tea "How mindful you have been reflects directly into how well the tea tastes. Tea is not a means to the end. Tea is the end."

There are three important compounds studied as part of the plant's health benefits: • Caffeine: While caffeine can get a bad rap nowadays, especially for those who drink too much of it, Teng explained how for thousands of years caffeine has been viewed in a positive light. "It's known for curing mild headaches, for the energy it brings us. Anything that has some kind alteration on our body, you consider the dosage. Caffeine in tea is not as stimulating than that in coffee. It's more body- friendly," Teng said, adding how it's been documented since ancient China that tea leads to a "calm alertness."

• L-theanine: This compound is an amino acid in tea that "rounds out the soft edges." Teng explained how better, higher-end teas have a larger ratio of L-theanine, which can help to create a smoother, more balanced mouthfeel. This is also what can produce a calming effect in our brains. "It’s not very common, so this is what makes tea precious," she said. The amino acid can also be condensed and purchased in pill form. "In Japan, it’s taken as antidepressant. It's the No. 1 contributor to the neurological health benefits tea offers."

• Catechin: A polyphenol, similar to the tannins in wine (which are also polyphenols), "catechin offers structure, texture, mouthfeel. It creates a finer texture," Teng said.

"It's similar to the health benefits that the tannins in wine contributes to its antioxidant levels. It's an amazing compound that endorses (why) having tea as a regular drink can help boost our immune system."

When drunk habitually, tea can be very healthy

It's easy to feel disconnected from the food and drink we consume when we're steeped in a culture of convenience. Grabbing a quick meal or coffee can be great when we're on the go, but sometimes, leaning into a practice that requires patience, like making and drinking tea, can keep us grounded. The connection to the leaves unfurling in bubbling water, the earthy, sweet smells and the act of preparing it in a gaiwan, a traditional Chinese tea- brewing vessel, are all part of this simple but powerful way to pause, focus and sip into a meditative state. How to brew tea in the traditional Chinese method "Everyone develops their own daily ritual for brewing tea. Carve out time in the day focused on the tea helps clear out daily troubles," Teng said.

In Chinese medicine, Camellia sinensis is not considered an herb but is honored for its ability to keep the body and immune system in balance. Darker red and black teas are believed to be best for colder body types.

"Typically, women naturally have a colder constitution.

People with veggie-based diets, who are skinny, all benefit from darker-colored teas. When I am on my period, red tea or black tea, it helps," Teng said. "Men typically have hotter constitutions. It's believed that people with protein, fat-based diets (should) drink tea of lighter color."

A mental journey: "The pleasure we receive from drinking and eating something very delicious — when we pleasure the senses, it improves our mental well being," said Teng. "Seconds matter when we brew. This is very much in the mindfulness. We're lying in the ultimate present. We want the time to be finer and finer. In this very, very moment, time becomes so fine that you can feel it passing by. That’s very much the essence in how brewing and drinking tea is very beneficial to our mental practice."

Philosophical journey: "For people who are seeking a refined connection with either nature or artisanship, this is a very fulfilling journey," Teng said.

Similarly to the practice of collecting and tasting wines, pinpointing where a tea leaf comes from and deciphering what it is can be intellectually stimulating.

There is a whole structure to learning about and brewing the various types of Chinese teas, especially the old-world types. Here are some of principle ways drinking tea as an immersive experience can feel enriching:
