ere is a different viewpoint for FIA. I would say, it’s a FAME GAME. For the uninitiated, FIA Chicago was established in 1980. Sunil Shah was part of the FIA -1980. The problem that we are seeing now, began in the past. There was an ugly fight on Devon Ave (Bombay Hall) about the irregularity of the election procedure. Sunil Shah raised his voice against irregularity but it didn’t have the desired impact. He chose to leave FIA Chicago - 1980. He then established an organization under the SAME NAME - FIA - FEDERATION OF INDIAN ASSOCIATIONS. He worked hard and the ‘new’ FIA grew larger than FIA - 1980. Now here is the twist. Bhailal of FIA - 1980 was disappointed of his own FIA 1980, and he saw an opportunity with the New FIA of Sunil Shah. Bhailal went to Sunil Shah to join hands with him. Then began another scenario where he advised on how to defame his own FIA-1980. (As per claim by Sunil Shah in his email, which is getting forwarded to the community.) Now recently Bhailal back to “FIA - 1980” and claims the originality of FIA. Currently, some community members are witnessing an ugly

US plans to require Covid vaccine for foreign travellers

Most international travel has been halted by the restrictions

HiIndia Newsdesk The US will eventually require almost all foreign visitors to be fully vaccinated, a White House official has said.

The unnamed official told several news agencies that the Biden administration had tasked inter-agency groups with creating a phased reopening for

international visitors. No timeline for the decision was given. The US has seen a rise in cases, particularly among the unvaccinated, amid the spread of the Delta variant. Current Covid-19 rules prevent most international travellers from entering the country. The first round of travel restrictions were imposed on China in January 2020. Since then, the US ban has expanded to include non-US citizens who had recently visited the UK, the 26-nation Schengen bloc in Europe, Brazil, Ireland, India, Iran and South Africa. Those who are able to enter the country must show proof of a negative Covid test taken within three days of travel. Last week, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that the US would “maintain existing travel restrictions at this point” due to rising infections, despite opposition from airlines and the tourism industry.

LinkedIn Must Face Lawsuit Claiming Barack Obama scales back 60th It Overcharged Advertisers: US Court birthday party as Covid cases rise

HiIndia Newsdesk A U.S. judge said Microsoft Corp’s LinkedIn must face a lawsuit claiming it inflated t he numb er of p e ople who watched video ads on the networking platform, allowing it to overcharge hundreds of thousands of advertisers. U.S. Magistrate Judge Susan van Keulen, however, on Tuesday dismissed fraud-based claims and an unfair competition claim, saying the plaintiff advertisers did not show that LinkedIn made specific misrepresentations or that its conduct hurt the public at large. But the San Jose, California-based judge let the advertisers pursue claims based on the theory that bot traffic, errant clicks and fraudulent clicks inflated the metrics they relied on when buying LinkedIn ads.

US couple who pointed guns at protesters pardoned HiIndia Newsdesk

A US couple who gained nationwide notoriety after t h e y p o i nt e d guns at Black Lives Matter protesters last year have been pardoned. Mark and Patricia McCloskey were filmed holding weapons outside their home in St Louis, Missouri. They were fined after pleading guilty to misdemeanour charges this year. But Missouri’s Republican Governor Mike Parson has now pardoned them, something he had promised after US conservatives began to support the couple. The pair, both lawyers, appeared briefly at last year’s Republican National Convention, and Mr McCloskey has announced plans to run for a US Senate seat in Missouri. “When the angry mob came to destroy my house and kill my family, I took a stand against them,” he reportedly said in a recent campaign video. “I will never back down.”

HiIndia Newsdesk For m e r U S P re s i d e nt Barack Obama has scaled back plans for a big birthday party amid a rise in Covid infections nationwide. Mr O b ama tur ne d 60 on Wednesday and had planned a major celebration on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts this weekend. But as the highly contagious Delta variant has led to a surge in new infections, Mr Obama has announced plans to scale back the event. Only close friends and family will now attend. His spokesperson said the outdoor event on Saturday was planned months ago “in accordance with all public health guidelines”. But he and his wife Michelle Obama have now decided to limit its size.

Majority of New York Assembly would oust Andrew Cuomo if he doesn’t quit At least 86 of the body’s 150 members have said publicly or told The AP that they favored initiating the process of ousting the third-term Democratic governor if he doesn’t quit. It takes a simple majority to authorize an impeachment trial. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

HiIndia Newsdesk A majority of state Assembly members support beginning impeachment proceedings against Gov Andrew Cuomo if he doesn’t resign over investigative findings that he sexually harassed at least 11 women, according to an Associated Press count Wednesday. At least 86 of the body’s 150 members have said publicly or told The AP that they favored initiating the process of ousting the third-term Democratic governor if he doesn’t quit. It takes a simple majority to authorize an impeachment trial.

The tally reflects a governor plunged into a political deep freeze– a Democratic scion who has now lost most, if not all, of his allies in the party establishment just a year after basking in national attention as a blunt-but-relatable voice of fighting the coronavirus. Cuomo denies making any inappropriate sexual advances and insists the findings don’t reflect the facts. But while political pressure is growing, so is the potential for criminal charges against Cuomo. Joyce A Smith, Nassau County’s acting district attorney, called the findings “deeply disturbing” and pledged her office would “thoroughly and expeditiously investigate.”

Biden administration proposes $750 million arms sale to Taiwan

HiIndia Newsdesk The Biden administration has informed Congress of a proposed $750 million weapons sale to Taiwan in a move likely to further inflame tensions with Beijing. The administration gave notice about the intended sale on Wednesday, according to a State Department spokesperson, two congressional sources, and a notification from the Defense Security Cooperation Agency. The deal includes 40 M109A6 Medium Self-Propelled Howitzer Systems and related equipment. “If concluded, this proposed sale will contribute to the modernization of Taiwan’s howitzer fleet, strengthening its self-defense capabilities to meet current and future threats,” the spokesperson said. One of the congressional sources told that Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Robert Menendez had already cleared the sale as part of the informal review process -- a common practice in which the House and Senate Foreign Relations Committees get a heads-up on planned sales, allowing committee leadership to raise concerns, give their input or place holds

Pegasus: Snooping allegations serious if true, says Supreme Court The court says petitioners should have done more hard work to bring more material on record, fixes 10 Aug as the next date of hearing.

HiIndia Newsdesk The Supreme Court on Thursday said allegations of snooping are serious if the reports regarding it are correct as it commenced hearing on a batch of pleas seeking an independent probe into the alleged Pegasus snooping matter. A bench of Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justice Surya Kant asked some questions at the outset from senior counsel Kapil Sibal appearing for the Editors Guild of India and senior journalists N Ram and Sashi Kumar. “Before going into all that, we have certain questions. No doubt, the allegations are serious, if the reports are true,” the CJI observed and raised the issue of delay, saying the matter had come to light way back in 2019. “Reports of snooping came to light in

2019. I do not know whether any efforts were made to get more information,” the CJI observed, adding that he did not

want to say that it was an impediment. The top court said that it was not going into the facts of each case and if some

people claimed that their phones were intercepted then there is the Telegraph Act under which complaints can be filed. “I can explain. We do not have the access to many materials. The petitions have information about 10 cases of direct infiltration into phones,” Sibal said. The apex court asked the counsel appearing for the petitioners to serve the copy of the pleas to the Centre. “Let them serve copies of the petition to the government. Somebody should appear for the government to take notice,” the bench said while posting the matter for hearing on August 10. “We do not know in which matter we will issue notice. Let them come before us to accept the notices and then we will see,” the bench said.

“Can’t Be Mute Spectators If Evidence Destroyed”: Cops On Raj Kundra Raj Kundra Porn Case: Mumbai Police have insisted that Raj Kundra’s arrest was necessary because he was “trying to destroy evidence”.

to delete the alleged porn clips. “If they (the accused) are trying to destroy evidence, is the investigating agency supposed to be a mere spectator? If the accused are not co-operating and are destroying evidence, the investigating agency won’t be a mute spectator,” Mumbai Police said today. The police told the court Mr Kundra had deleted his iCloud account, but they found “61 porn videos” and a script with adult content on his laptop, as well as 51 more in digital storage. They said they also found a WhatsApp group on his mobile phone that contained chats with other accused and a PowerPoint presentation with marketing strategies and projections for ‘Hotshots’ - the mobile app via which Mr Kundra is accused of distributing the videos.

HiIndia Newsdesk Washington: Indian-American doctors have raised USD 5 million for COVID-19 relief in India, according to a prominent association of physicians of Indian origin. The fund raised by the influential Indian American doctors was used to provide 2,300 oxygen concentrators, 100 ventilators and 100 high-flow nasal cannula machines to 45 hospitals in India, the American Association of Physicians of Indian-Origin (AAPI), which represents thousands of Indianorigin doctors in the US, said on Tuesday. Under New Theater Rule All Broadway DHS Statement on Expedited Removal Flights for Certain Families Audiences Must be Vaccinated

HiIndia Newsdesk NEW YORK, NY — The show will go on at Broadway theaters, but only for audience members who are vaccinated against the coronavirus. A show-stopping new rule by the Broadway League requires vaccinations for audiences, performers, backstage crew and staff at all 41 theaters through October. The League’s announcement Friday put it in a growing chorus of city institutions, from New York City’s government to Danny Meyer’s rest aurants, t hat are re quir ing vaccination for people who work, eat and recreate in public spaces. “As vaccination has proven the most effective way to stay healthy and reduce transmission, I’m pleased that the theatre

owners have decided to implement these collective safeguards at all our Broadway houses,” Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League, said in a statement. “A uniform policy across all New York City Broadway theatres makes it simple for our audiences and should give even more confidence to our guests about how seriously Broadway is taking audience safety.” Strict new vaccination mandates are spreading across the country, but not as fast as the highly contagious delta variant of coronavirus. Coronavirus infections have quadrupled in New York City over the past month, according to city health data — a rise health officials pin to the delta variant and city dwellers who remain unvaccinated. About 71 percent of New York City’s adults have received at least one dose of vaccine, but vaccination rates vary widely among certain groups and neighborhoods in the city. Mayor Bill de Blasio this week set a sweeping vaccination-or-testing mandate for city government workers.

HiIndia Newsdesk WASHINGTON, DC – Asylum and other legal migration pathways should be readily available to those who need them, and this Administration is committed to fairly and efficiently considering asylum claims. Those not seeking protection or who do not qualify will be promptly returned to their country of origin. Consistent with that approach, the Department of Homeland Security today resumed expedited removal flights for certain families who recently

arrived at the southern border, cannot be expelled under Title 42, and do not have a legal basis to stay in the United States. Families apprehended by Customs and Border Protection were removed via U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Air Operations to their home countries of Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. The expedited removal process is a lawful means to securely manage our border, and it is a step toward our broader aim to realize safe and orderly immigration processing. By placing into expedited removal families who cannot be expelled under Title 42, we are making clear that those who do not qualify to remain in the United States will be promptly removed. The Biden-Harris Administration is working to manage safe, orderly, and humane migration in North and Central America, including by expanding lawful pathways to the United States. DHS recently expanded the Central American Minors program and made 6,000 H-2B visas available for Central Americans.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham declared 19 July as ‘Dr Jonathan Iralu Day’ throughout the state in honour of the physician who took several measures to protect residents of the state from the virus such as establishing a drive-in Covid testing centre weeks before the first confirmed case was reported in the state. Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio also tweeted a congratulatory message for Iralu last week. A Harvard graduate, Dr Iralu traces his origins to Nagaland’s Khonoma village. “My father was a parasitologist, my mother a microbiologist… and my grandfather was one of the first doctors (a general practitioner) in Nagaland trained in Dibrugarh under the British in the 1920s. Indian-American Siblings Developing Low-Cost, Improved Functionality Interface for Prosthetics CAMBRIDGE, MA – Stemming from a frustrating personal story, rising MIT junior Eeshan Tripathii and his sister, engineer Vini Tripathii, decided to do something about it. Previously, after a friend of the Indian American siblings had their hand amputated, they witnessed the challenges of living with a prosthetic, and that, too, with one that performed unreliably. Eeshan says it was “like giving someone the world’s greatest computer, but with a broken keyboard and mouse,” an MIT report said. For Vikram Batra’s family, this isn’t just a film

Sidharth Malhotra stars as Kargil war hero Captain Vikram Batra in Shershaah, while Kiara Advani plays his fiancee Dimple Cheema. Shershaah will arrive on Amazon Prime Video on August 12.

n 2016, Sidharth Malhotra had no writer, director or a reliable production team behind him. What he had was a hope of bringing to fruition a longtime dream of Captain Vikram Batra’s twin brother Vishal Batra — to have a biopic on the life of the Kargil War hero. Sidharth couldn’t let the story pass, after all he was getting a chance to bring to screen the life of the dynamic soldier, who was known as much for his courage as for his charm. Through the course of the film’s making, which took close to four years, however, the actor in Sidharth Malhotra found itself in conflict with the sense of responsibility he felt to the memory of Batra and to his family. “I might be doing my job as an actor but for that family, who’s letting us use their story, it’s not just a commercial film,” Sidharth says as he and director Vishnu Vardhan sit down for an interview with indianexpress. com against the backdrop of Tiger Hills in Drass, Kargil where the 1999 war between India and Pakistan was fought. The actor’s emotional involvement with the film was ascertained even at the Shershaah trailer launch a few days ago when he sounded short of words to describe his experience of playing Vikram Batra. “This location looks very scenic but to think that in 199 this was actually a battlefield… I was quite emotional on the stage and couldn’t put it in words because this is something I am really attached and passionate about, the film and the character.”

My father was over the moon -Vaani Kapoor

V

aani Kapoor may have shared screen space with the top brass of Bollywood, with her pairing with Hrithik Roshan in War, and Ranveer Singh in Befikre being appreciated by fans and critics alike. Howe ver, it is her collaboration with Akshay Kumar for the August release, Bell Bottom, that ticks a check-box off her wishlist. Kapoor, who shares screen space with Kumar in “a small but impactful role”, counts herself among the fortunate for the opportunity. “ [ Ku mar ] is among the icons of the Hindi film industry and I am grateful for his trust. I hope that my role is loved by audiences and critics alike. The decision to work in this film was a no-brainer.” That her father is an admirer of Kumar was also reason to give her nod. “He was ecstatic to know that I had this opportunity because he has loved his work for a long time. He was over the moon when I broke the news to him.”

What he does to avoid getting typecast Rajpal Yadav, who has been in the film industry for 24 years, says he is happy with what he has achieved to date. However, the talented actor, who is mostly known for his comic roles, says he has broken stereotypes and tried to avoid getting typecast. "I'm very happy with what I've done till today. From day one I had decided that I would never repeat a character that I have played. Actors get typecast very quickly. So even if I'm offered a similar kind of role, I change its mentality. An actor cannot change his physique but the mentality can be changed," Rajpal Yadav told. The actor also revealed what he did to break stereotypes. "I've done all possible variety of roles from negative to comedy to lead and supporting. Some people say, you should not play supporting characters once you've played the lead role. But I have done that and I enjoy breaking these theories," he added. if your director is good, then the task becomes even more easy for the actor. If you are not understanding a situation and unable to properly communicate with your director, then that reflects on the screen as well.

FOMO keeps Karan Johar from turning Bigg Boss contestant! Karan Johar’s delight at turning host of the reality TV show Bigg Boss is palpable. An avid consumer of the offering, Johar will replace Salman Khan for the OTT leg that precedes its televised airing. But, while like every other consumer, Johar too would probably spend his days analysing the participants’ performance, would he consider becoming one, if the opportunity arose? “I won’t be able to,” pat comes his reply. “My biggest fear is staying away from my kids, [Roohi and Yash]. I can’t imagine spending weeks without them because I will have FOMO if I were to stay away from them. They are the source of my happiness, and not being around them for long will kill me.”

A lot of unwarranted aspersions on me cast by the media and (not so) well wishers as well. A lot of trolling/questions posed... not only to me but also to my family. MY STAND... I HAVE NOT COMMENTED YET and will continue to refrain from doing so on this case as it is subjudice, so please stop attributing false quotes on my behalf. Reiterating my philosophy of, as a celebrity "Never complain, never explain". All I will say is, as it's an on-going investigation, I have full faith in the Mumbai Police & the Indian judiciary." "As a family, we are taking recourse to all our available legal remedies. But, till then I humbly request you - especially as a MOTHER - to respect our privacy for my children’s sake and request you to refrain from commenting on half-baked information without verifying the veracity of the same. Money Heist 5 trailer: It’s a fight to the finish for The Professor and the gang The trailer of Money Heist Season 5 Part One was released on Monday. And as expected, it is loaded with intense action. The crime-drama is just one month away from release, and expectations are only set to soar after watching the trailer. The nearly two-minute long video shows the gang and The Professor at their most vulnerable phase. While the gang is trying to get over the death of Nairobi, Lisbon‘s entry inside the Bank of Spain seems to act as a catalyst. “This is no more a robbery. This is war.” The trailer aptly hints at a war between the gang and the army that’s inside the bank to nab the former. On the other hand, Sergio aka The Professor is at the mercy of inspector Alicia Sierra. While we see Sergio handcuffed, chained and being tortured, we know there’s more to what meets the eyes as our mastermind has miraculous escape plans every time things go awry. And we expect the same again.

Rhea Chakraborty to face camera again After being traumatized for more than a year, Rhea Chakraborty has bounced back. Filmmaker Rumi Jaffrey, in whose suspense thriller Chehre, Rhea makes a comeback of sorts, was happy to host Rhea at his daughter’s pre-wedding festivities last week. “She is at peace with herself. She has come to terms with whatever happened to her. Now she’s more thoughtful and quiet. But ready to work again,” says Rumi. The problem is, all those loud mouthed proposal makers posing as filmmakers who promised Rhea movie offers whenever she was ready to return, have disappeared. Apparently, one such fly-by-night producer who had committed himself on social media to working with Rhea was warned by his superstarmaster to “stay away from trouble”.

The Deol's are one of the most loved film families. Filmgoers love to see them on the screen. Recently Bobby Deol expressed his desire to work with his cousin Abhay Deol through an Instagram post. However, it seems that the youngest of Deol won the 'Race' as Karan Deol will work with his chachu Abhay and he acknowledged it with a picture. In the picture, Abhay is seen smiling and posing with his 'Dimpy Chachu'. Karan feels that this dream-come-true opportunity is something he'll cherish for a lifetime. "I would thank Dimpy chachu for always having my back! He's always been an inspiration for me and working with him is something I'll always cherish." Karan further asserted that he's supremely excited for this opportunity. "I'm excited for everyone to see what we've been shooting for." This team-up will surely win over filmgoers and one really can't wait to see them together on celluloid.

Wildfire reaches Turkey power plant, prompts evacuations

HiIndia Newsdesk Mexico sued several gun makers in a US federal court on Wednesday, accusing them of reckless business practices that supply what it called a “torrent” of illegal arms to violent Mexican drug cartels, leading to thousands of deaths. The lawsuit alleges that units of Smith & Wesson (SWBI.O), Barrett Firearms, Colt’s Manufacturing Company, Glock Inc, Sturm, Ruger & Co and others knew their business practices had encouraged illegal arms trafficking into Mexico.

HiIndia Newsdesk A coal-fueled power plant in southwest Turkey and nearby residential areas were being evacuated Wednesday evening as flames from a wildfire reached the plant, a mayor and local reporters said as sirens from the plant could be heard blaring.

Milas Mayor Muhammet Tokat, from Turkey’s main opposition party, has been warning of the fire risks for the past two days for the Kemerkoy power plant in Mugla province. He said late Wednesday that the plant was being evacuated. Local reporters said the wildfires had also prompted the

evacuation of the nearby seaside area of Oren. Turkey’s defense ministry said it was evacuating people by sea as the fires neared the plant. The state broadcaster TRT said the flames had “jumped” to the plant. Strong winds were making the fires unpredictable. Authorities have said safety precautions had been taken at the Kemerkoy power plant and its hydrogen tanks were emptied. TRT said flammable and explosive substances had been removed. The privately run plant uses lignite to generate electricity, according to its website. Videos from the area showed bright orange, burning hills with power towers and lines crisscrossing the foreground. Pro-government news channel A Hbr broadcasting live from near the evacuated power plant late Wednesday said firefighters were working inside the compound cooling equipment and dousing sparks in an effort to keep the fire away. The channel’s crew showed an incinerated police water cannon.

Pakistan reaches one million daily UK moves India from Covid-19 vaccinations milestone ‘red’ to ‘amber’ list HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk Pakistan reached a milestone in Covid vaccinations this week, health officials said: The number of people receiving

shots surpassed one million a day. But it took extraordinary measures, and much cajoling, to get there. Among other things, the government has threatened to shut off cellphone service, hold back salaries and prohibit air travel for anyone who isn’t vaccinated. Officials say they have secured enough vaccine doses to inoculate the entire country by year’s end, and have justified the penalties as necessary for overcoming widespread vaccine hesitancy. Proof of vaccination is required for school employees, and by the end of the month the requirement will be extended to hospitality and transport workers as well as public-sector employees.

Fully vaccinated passengers from India will no longer be subjected to compulsory 10-day hotel quarantine as the UK moved the country from its “red” to “amber” list. Under Britain’s traffic light system for international travel, returning from amber list countries means a 10-day quarantine at home. The change, announced by the Department for Transport, comes into effect from 4 am local time on Sunday. “The UAE, Qatar, India and Bahrain will be moved from the red list to the amber list. All changes come into effect Sun 8th August at 4 am,” UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps tweeted.

the content had been removed, the suspension had been wrongly applied. International Olympic Committee (IOC) guidelines mandate that athletes must not post Olympic Games content containing audio and video of the

sporting event or medal ceremony. This is because a set number of broadcasters hold exclusive rights to broadcast the Games. Their rights include distribution on social media. However athletes “are invited to share the content” posted by these broadcasters on their accounts, the IOC told Reuters. Any content that breaks these rules is removed immediately. It is not clear where the footage the sprinter posted came from. For the time period that includes the 2018 Pyeongchang winter Olympics and the Tokyo Games, the IOC is set to receive more than $4bn (£2.8bn) in broadcasting rights. The majority of the money goes back into the Games and supporting sports and athletes.

India vs Pakistan T20 WC match likely to be held on Oct 24

HiIndia Newsdesk The marquee T20 World Cup clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan in all likelihood will be held on October 24, which is a Sunday, even though the ICC will be releasing the official

schedule of the tournament in few days. It has been learnt that the ICC normally keeps two to three sets of schedule before zeroing in on the final one. But, it is a given that with the kind of traction an Indo-Pak rivalry generates, the match will have to be held on a weekend. “As of now, Sunday, October 24 looks the likely option as the first week’s Qualifying round matches starting October 17 will be held in Muscat, Oman,” a source privy to developments in the ICC board told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

HiIndia Newsdesk The legendary Sunil Gavaskar has backed the under-pressure Cheteshwar Pujara for his ability to hold the fort but said the Indian team management can explore “someone else” if it feels his method is not working anymore. Known for his rock-solid defence and textbook batting technique, Pujara received a lot of flak for not being able to put away the bad deliveries in recent years, the latest being the World Test Championship final against New Zealand. “Pujara has got to the international level playing in a certain way, he has got to trust that method. In case, the team doesn’t trust that method, then they have to maybe look at bringing somebody else in,” Gavaskar said during a virtual con-call on Monday. I think he’s got to believe in himself and carry on playing as he knows best because he has done a fantastic job for India over the years,” he added.

What Ravi’s win means to Nahari: Hospital, regular electricity will follow Olympic medal With the Olympics medal sealed, Ravi Dahiya’s father Rakesh and the villagers of Nahari, Haryana now hope that their long-standing demand of a hospital and regular electricity supply will be fulfilled. “Now that a medal has come. I am sure a hospital will come up soon. The village folk are still waiting for a regular supply of drinking water and electricity. I am sure things will change now,” says father Rakesh.

Men’s high jump final: The ending was nothing short of a fairytale The scene is the final of men’s high jump at the Tokyo Olympics. Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi was facing Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim in the final. Both of them jumped 2.37 meters and were on par ! Olympic officials gave three more attempts to each of them, but they were unable to reach more than 2.37 meters. One more attempt was given to two both of them, but Tampberi withdrew from the last attempt due to a serious leg injury. The moment when there was no other opponent in front of Barshim, the moment when he could have easily approached the gold alone ! But Barshim asked the official “if the gold can be shared between the two of us if I withdraw from the final attempt ?” The official checks and confirms and says “yes then the gold will be shared between the two of you”. Barshim then had nothing to think about, announces withdrawal from the last attempt. Seeing this, the Italian opponent Tamberi ran and hugged Barshim and screamed ! What we saw there was a great share of love in sports that touches our hearts. It reveals the indescribable sportsmanship that makes religions, colors and borders irrelevant !!!

Bronze joy after 41 years The Indian penalty corner battery was a constant threat, but they were also quite dangerous in open play, often catching the Germans with swift counter-attacks.

A

Narendra Modi @narendramodi Historic! A day that will be etched in the memory of every Indian. Congratulations to our Men’s Hockey Team for bringing home the Bronze. With this feat, they have captured the imagination of the entire nation, especially our youth. India is proud of our Hockey team.

41-year wait finally ended when the Indian men’s hockey team secured an Olympic medal by beating Germany 5-4 in a pulsating encounter in Tokyo on Thursday. Goals from Rupinder Pal Singh, Hardik Singh and Harmanpreet Singh, in addition to a brace from Simranjeet Singh saw India through. It was a topsy-turvy game in which India went 0-1 and then 1-3 down, conceding two goals in as many minutes, before launching a comeback. They went up 5-3 and had to endure some anxious moments, showing determination and defensive resolve to end one of the longest droughts in Indian sport. The Indian penalty corner battery w a s a c ons t ant threat, but t h e y we re also quite dangerous in open play, often catching the Germans with swift counter-attacks. Germany scored t h rou g h Ti mu r O r u z , Niklas Wellen, Benedikt Furk and Lukas Windfeder, but in the end, had to go back from the Olympics without their customary medal. As is often the case, the medal didn’t come easy for the Indian team. They had to bounce back from a 1-7 mauling at the hands of Australia in their second group game. They won four matches on the bounce after that before going down 2-5 to world champions Belgium in a high-quality semifinal. They couldn’t afford to feel sorry for themselves after that loss and showed great reserves of physical and emotional energy to get across the line on Thursday.

Rahul Gandhi @RahulGandhi Congratulations to Indian Men’s Hockey Team! This is a big moment- the whole country is proud of your achievement. Well-deserved victory!

After the final hooter, there were emotional hugs among the India players and the coaching staff. They all came into a huddle as Australian head coach Graham Reid and skipper Manpreet Singh spoke about the significance of what they have achieved and the sacrifices they have made to get there. The German side that came to the Olympics in Tokyo doesn’t have the aura of teams of the past. The European giants won back-to-back gold medals in 2008 and 2012, but even a diminished Germany are never easy to beat as they seldom give in. Goalkeeper PR Sreejesh was in inspirational form once again, as India thwarted the late German charge. They had to defend a penalty corner awarded with 6.8 seconds left on the clock, but as the ball went out of the Indian D, the podium place was secured, adding a new and glorious chapter in the history of Indian hockey that could very well spark a longterm turnaround and interest in the Indian national game. ndia ended a long, excruciating wait of 41 years as they bagged the bronze medal in men’s hockey after defeating Germany 5-4 in the play-off at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday. After going down 1-3 down early in the second quarter, India bounced back in style with the help of Hardik Singh and Harmanpreet Singh to make it 3-3 just before the half-time break. The eight-time Olympic gold medallists turned up the heat at the start of the third quarter as they raced to a 5-3 lead owing to two quick goals by Rupinder Pal Singh and Simranjeet Singh. Despite pulling one back in the final quarter of the contest, Germany failed to turn things around to the delight of the Manpreet Singh-led side.

Spain’s tourism industry was devastated by the travel restrictions imposed last year to curb the pandemic

S

panish holiday rentals for August are more heavily booked than before the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to domestic tourism and a perception that rented properties are safer than hotels, Spain’s leading holiday booking website Rentalia said on Wednesday. The occupancy of apartments and houses leased to tourists during the summer is set to rise to 89.2% next month, 12 percentage points above year-ago levels and just above 88.5% registered in 2019, before the pandemic struck, Rentalia said. The highest rates of above 94% are expected in the Balearic Islands of Menorca and Mallorca, as well as in the mainland resort area of Alicante. Domestic tourists staying in Spain amid lingering travel restrictions in many countries, as well as the feeling that a rented property provides a safer environment than a hotel, have boosted demand, said Rentalia director Almudena Ucha.

Basic rules to follow while eating fruits “I know we feel cool, virtuous or healthy when we eat a plate or a bowl of fruits. But that is not how it works,” nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar said

G

iven the health benefits of fruits, experts recommend adding them to our daily diet. But how should we exactly eat them — with or without peel? Whole fruits or juice? And at what time? Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar suggested three things to remember while eating fruits. “I know we feel cool, virtuous or healthy when we eat a plate or a bowl of fruits. But that is not how it works,” she said in a video. To ensure you reap health benefits from fruits, here’s what you should follow, according to the nutritionist. • Eat the fruits solo, don’t mix them up • You can eat fruits as the first meal, mid-meal, or after workout • Chew them, don’t juice them. Diwekar also recommended eating seasonal whole fruits with hands and not a fork.

Fully vaccinated? what you can and can’t do

What can I do after being fully vaccinated? The CDC expanded their guidelines for fully vaccinated people on May 13, announcing that people who are fully vaccinated can participate in most indoor activities without masking or social distancing. Though the organization updated its guidelines in late July due to the delta variant: Fully vaccinated people do have some limitations; to date, the CDC recommends fully vaccinated people wear masks in public indoor settings in regions where there is high virus transmission. The guidelines also say that vaccinated people should still wear masks in very crowded environments, like concerts whether they’re indoors or outdoors. Masks should also be worn in hospitals and doctor’s offices, and on public transit, including airplanes.

What does it mean to be fully vaccinated? A person becomes fully vaccinated at least two weeks after their final dose of a coronavirus vaccine. For the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines, which require two doses, this means two weeks after the second dose. For the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which requires just one dose, this means two weeks after the first and only dose.

You can still get COVID-19 after being vaccinated “95% efficacy is not 100% efficacy,” said Andrew Heinrich, a lecturer at the Yale School Of Public Health in New Haven, Connecticut. “There are going to be some people who are not protected, even by two doses of the vaccine, but they should have more mild disease,” said Moss. “... The vaccines are really highly protective against severe disease, so even those who get COVID-19 after two doses of vaccine are much more likely to have mild disease.” Still some people who are fully vaccinated can become very sick and die. An NBC News survey of health officials nationwide found that those who experience more serious disease despite being fully vaccinated tend to be older than 65, have a compromised immune system or other health conditions.

What if I’m exposed to COVID-19 after vaccination?

If you are fully vaccinated and have been exposed to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19, the CDC recommends you get tested 3-5 days after exposure and to wear a mask when indoors for 14 days or until you receive a negative test. “You certainly need to get tested, if you become symptomatic, even if you’ve been vaccinated,” NBC News medical contributor Dr. Natalie Azar said. It is possible to contract COVID-19 even after being fully vaccinated, but vaccines are expected to seriously curb cases of moderate and severe illness.

What about seeing people who can’t be vaccinated yet?

If a vaccinated person is at an increased risk of serious illness from COVID-19, they may choose to continue to wear a mask regardless of transmission levels. The CDC recommended universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students and visitors to school, whether you’re vaccinated or not. In April, the agency said that people who were

vaccinated could participate in most outdoor activities without wearing a mask. People who are not vaccinated should still wear masks while participating in some outdoor activities. “This was a turnaround and it was great news,” said Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of Brown University School of Public Health, said on TODAY. “The way to think about it is if you’re fully vaccinated, you don’t have to wear a mask outside, you generally don’t have to wear a mask indoors. The one big exception is if you’re in crowded spaces, where ... you’re sharing the air with a lot of people. ... Infection numbers are still high, there’s still a lot of people who are not vaccinated yet and so the CDC is saying, and I think they’re right, that in those crowded areas you want to keep wearing a mask. Other than that you’re good to go.” Fully vaccinated people can also attend a crowded, outdoor event like a live performance or sports event, but the CDC still recommends wearing a mask. Crowded, outdoor environments are still considered unsafe for unvaccinated people, even if they are wearing masks.

The guidelines note that fully vaccinated people can see low-risk unvaccinated people (from one household) in indoor gatherings without masking or distancing. If people are unvaccinated but are high-risk for severe COVID-19, precautions should still be taken. Dr. Sten Vermund, a pediatrician and dean of the Yale School of Public Health in New Haven, Connecticut, said that this means that grandparents who are vaccinated can interact with grandchildren, even ones who are not yet eligible for vaccination, safely, so long as those kids aren’t considered high-risk.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 6, 2021

The Problem With Dieting We always seem to be looking for the next diet, the one that will melt off weight without making us obsess over food in the process. But we don’t need fad diets at all. The answer to weight loss is simple and unchanging. We need to add more fruits and vegetables to our diets, while cutting out (or at least cutting down on) processed convenience foods and sweets. If we only focus on numbers on the scale, we’ll lose sight of what matters most to our overall health: making healthy food choices and making exercise a life-long habit. But don’t be surprised if the weight does fall off when you adopt this mindset. Even if we manage to lose weight, studies have found that most of us end up regaining the weight within a year. If you need convincing, Petitpain recommends that you stop by Barnes & Noble and take note of the shelf of diet books that extends the length of the building. Then turn around and look at your fellow Americans, most of whom will be overweight. “Somehow, there is a disconnect between the quick fixes offered by diet books, and our abilities to either try them or stick to them,” she says. “You can be overweight and physically fit, and disease risk goes down,” Petitpain says. “We know there are people in the normal weight range, but who don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables, and their disease risk goes up.” Balancing calories in with calories out still matters for dropping pounds, but obsessing about weight can be self-sabotaging. A better approach, says Mann, would be to accept our bodies — but don’t binge eat. Fight weight stigma. Exercise because it’s good for us and eat more veggies.

Clear Your Countertops If you tried to diet and succeeded for a while before going off course, know that it doesn't mean you're weak. “There’s this idea out there that dieters, or obese people, have worse self-control than everyone else, and that’s just not how it works,” Mann says. Depriving our bodies of calories wields a powerful force on our biology — and our bodies fight back with a variety of physiological processes designed to hold on to the weight. “Most people wouldn’t even have … the kind of willpower you would need to overcome all of it,” says Mann. “It’s

N

What Really Works to Lose Weight

Science can explain why it’s so hard to lose weight and keep it off — and the results don’t support dieting. Try these strategies instead.

We’re hard on ourselves, too, and that doesn’t do us any favors. Once we’ve noticed those extra pounds, we often decide we must lose that weight really fast so we can be healthy again, says Petitpain. But because we have gained that weight over several years, it likely isn’t waving goodbye any time soon. Petitpain says a better approach is taking gradual steps toward healthy choices, such as cutting out processed food, being mindful of portion sizes, and adding physical activity to your routine. And at the end of the day, whether someone is healthy or not goes beyond being fat or thin.

Self-Care Now, Diet Later?

o matter your weight or fitness goals, remember that wellness is more than a diet and exercise regime. Now more than ever, stress plays a vital role on our overall wellbeing. If stress and anxiety is causing poor sleep, you’ll be too tired to exercise or make the right food decisions. It can be helpful to take a step back and recognize that living through a traumatic year has likely taken a mental and physical toll. Just view weight loss as one part of an overall plan to get yourself back on track and take small

steps to boost your overall health. “Maybe it’s better to think about the overall journey, rather than being so hyper-focused on achieving an endpoint,” says Petitpain. Think about how long it took you to gain that weight and be realistic about how quickly those pounds can come off. The American Obesity Society recommends a rate of one-to-two pounds a week, which is sustainable over time, and provides some health benefits. Or find a dietician and get some personalized help.

23

just too much to fight against.” Resisting food cravings day in and day out is difficult. A better approach is to make tempting food more difficult to grab. If your partner insists on having candy in the house, for example, store those goodies in an opaque container, making them harder to see. When sweets are out of sight, they tend to be out of mind as well. Or forget about resisting your food cravings altogether and try a strategy Mann calls “veggies first.” This ploy is an easy one to incorporate — think a salad before dinner. Before you eat anything — whether it’s a slice of pizza or a steak — put some vegetables on your plate. Doing this adds nutrition to your diet and it fills you up, making you less likely to overindulge on fattening foods. Mann and her team tested this idea in a field study held in an elementary school. The researchers aimed to test whether kids would eat more of a vegetable if that was their only choice, or if the same vegetable was served along with other foods. First, the researchers determined what the baseline consumption of carrots was during a typical school lunch, when they were served alongside other foods. Then three months later, the same meal was served, but this time the kids were given carrots before the rest of their meal. The team found that the kids gobbled up more carrots when the vegetable was served alone, before the rest of their food. The researchers also tested their veggies-first approach on college students and keeping track of their carrot and M&M consumption depending on which food was served first. The students ate more carrots when they were served first, and ate less candy as a result. What matters in the long run for health are your overall eating habits, says Petitpain. An occasional splurge meal doesn’t negate the healthier choices you’ve made on a day-to-day basis. But know that if wellness is your goal, you do need to make a regular a habit of consuming health-promoting foods, especially those that are minimally processed. They’re easy to find because they’re generally anything you can pick up on the perimeter of the supermarket. In addition to Mann’s veggies-first plan, another healthful approach involves adding vegetables to every meal and finding creative swaps. Try adding salsa to eggs, spinach to smoothies, sliced mushrooms to burgers, or having veggies and hummus instead of chips.

But whatever you do, don’t start a diet if you’re not emotionally ready to commit. “If you don’t have the bandwidth right now to tackle an aggressive diet, then don’t start one, because it might be worse to try and fail. Focus instead on self-care. Try sleeping better, moving a little bit, eating a little healthier at every meal,” says Petitpain. “These are hard times; you really have to prioritize.”
