giving prescient warnings about the risk of a new pandemic. Her lab at the Wuhan Institute of Virology also discovered and studied the closestknown cousin to the coronavirus, though scientists note it would require decades of natural evolution to bridge the two. The WHO report says Shi told the visiting team that all field work is done with full protective equipment — which experts say would include N95 masks, Tyvek bodysuits, goggles and gloves. But in a June 2018 lecture, Shi said workers don’t do that in practice. “In most cases, we’d wear simpler protection, and it’s okay,” she said on a Chinese TED Talks-like program called Yixi. She said that’s because most bat-borne diseases cannot infect humans directly, only through an

afterward. Some wear thin surgical masks and rubber gloves as they work, while others are unmasked with bare hands. “Under what situation would we increase our protection? For instance, when there are too many bats in the cave, and lots of dust even as you’re entering,” she said. Shi kept a low profile at the pandemic’s onset, with her occasional interventions reflecting the pressures on her team. On Feb. 2, 2020, she posted to friends on WeChat that she “swore on her life” her lab was not involved in the outbreak. Three months later, she followed up with a post denying rumors she had defected to the West with intelligence files, as reported in the state-run Global Times.

Talking about their research, Dr Rahalkar said they do not know exactly if the virus had leaked but it is a strong hypothesis as our research point out towards a possible lab leak. “We started our research in April 2020. We found that a relative of SARS-CoV-2, RATG13, a coronavirus was collected from a mineshaft in Mojiang of Yunnan province in South China by the Wuhan Institute of Virology. We also found out that the mineshaft was infested with bats and six miners hired to clean the fecal matter were infected with pneumonialike illness,” said Dr Rahalkar. “Wuhan Institute of Virology and other labs in Wuhan are experimenting on the virus, and there is a suspicion that they did some changes in the genome of the virus, and it may be possible that the current virus was invented in the process,” she added.

US super-rich ‘pay almost no income tax’ HiIndia Newsdesk

Details claiming to reveal how little income tax US billionaires pay have been leaked to a news website. ProPublica says it has seen the tax returns of some of the world’s richest people, including Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Warren Buffett. The website alleges Amazon’s Mr Bezos paid no tax in 2007 and 2011, while Tesla’s Mr Musk paid nothing in 2018. A White House spokeswoman called the leak “illegal”, and the FBI and tax authorities are investigating. ProPublica said it was analysing what it called a “vast trove of Internal Revenue Service data” on the taxes of the billionaires, and would release further details over coming weeks. While the BBC has not been able to confirm the claims, the alleged leak comes at a time of growing debate about the amount of tax paid by the wealthy and widening inequality. ProPublica said the richest 25 Americans pay less in tax - an average of 15.8% of adjusted gross income than most mainstream US workers. Jesse Eisinger, senior reporter and

HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: Sushil Kumar’s demands for a special diet and supplements in jail appear to be “desires and wishes”, not necessities, a Delhi court said on Wednesday as it rejected the jailed wrestler’s petition. “By the way of present application, the accused/applicant is not claiming any deficiency in a person’s daily diet, their quantities and the common source of nutrients as mentioned in Delhi Prisons Rules, 2018. Meaning thereby, the accused/applicant has been provided with a balanced and healthy diet,” the court said in its order. The court added that Sushil Kumar, accused of murdering a fellow wrestler, is not suffering from any disease. “The law should be equal and should be equally administered, that like should be treated alike,” the court observed.

India, China should help, not undercut each other: Envoy Sun Weidong

HiIndia Newsdesk Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidong has said that New Delhi and Beijing “need to help each other succeed instead of undercutting each other”, adding that the two sides “should respect each other, treat each other as equals, conduct dialogue and consultation and properly address

differences to find a mutually acceptable solution”. Sun said this at the celebrations of the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Wednesday. The remarks were made public on Thursday. Holding an online dialogue with Confederation of Young Leaders (CYL) and students and faculty from Indian universities, Sun said, “How will the China-India relations move forward? We need cooperation rather than confrontation. We need to help each other succeed instead of undercutting each other. At the moment, we should focus on tackling the pandemic, reviving the economy, improving people’s livelihood, and managing our own affairs well.

HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi:The Union Health Ministry has issued clinical guidelines for the treatment of Covid-positive children amid concerns that a possible third wave of the coronavirus infections may target those aged below 18. In a detailed document titled ‘Comprehensive Guidelines for Management of COVID-19 in Children’, the ministry said antiviral drug Remdesivir is not recommended for children, and steroids should be used to treat only moderately severe and critically ill patients in hospital settings. “Remdesivir (an emergency use authorization drug) is NOT recommended in children…There is lack of sufficient safety and efficacy data with respect to Remdesivir in children below 18 years of age,” the document reads.

Two Held Over Doctored Audio Clip ‘Defaming’ Adityanath HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk Jitin Prasada’s exit from the Congress on Wednesday is a setback for the Grand Old Party in terms of optics and perception. While he is not a huge electoral asset for the Congress in Uttar Pradesh, where it has been down and out for years, his joining the BJP will reinforce the belief that even young leaders are now increasingly feeling suffocated since they see no future for themselves in the party. Prasada is not a pan-Uttar Pradesh leader. For that matter, neither does he hold significant influence in western Uttar Pradesh from where he hails. The Congress is already at its lowest ebb in the key heartland state.

Service charge Rs 150-cap may be too low: Private hospitals

HiIndia Newsdesk PRIVATE HOSPITALS in the state capital on Tuesday welcomed the Centre’s new vaccine policy, even as authorities at some of the hospitals added that the Rs 150 cap on service charges for administering the vaccine “may not be enough”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday announced a centralised Covid-19 vaccine policy and a cap of Rs 150 on service charge imposed by private hospitals for administering Covid vaccines. Hospitals and President, Association of Hospitals of Eastern India, said on Tuesday, “It (new vaccine policy) is a welcome move and people will benefit. Private hospitals were charging a bit more to provide quality service. This (Rs 150 cap) could have an effect in this regard. But private hospitals will not face any difficulties in vaccination drive. However, it would have been ideal if the vaccine procurement charge remained the same for government and private hospitals. This would have ensured vaccination at a lower price despite the Rs 150 service charge cap.”

New Covid-19 vaccination guidelines out, allocation based on state population HiIndia Newsdesk

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweaked his government’s Covid-19 vaccination policy and announced that states will receive free doses for inoculation of all above 18, revised guidelines for the same were released on Tuesday. The announcement came amid a chorus from states that the Centre should take over vaccine procurement, and probing questions recently from the Supreme Court. As per the revised guidelines, the Centre will buy 75 per cent of doses from vaccine makers, including 25 per cent of the state quota, and give it for free to state governments and union territories. As the Prime Minister said in his Monday address, no state government will have to spend on

vaccine procurement. However, the government has made it clear that the allocation of doses will depend on factors including the population of states and vaccine wastage. “Vaccine doses provided free of cost by the Government of India will be allocated to States/UTs based on criteria such as population, disease burden and the progress of vaccination. Wastage of vaccine will affect the allocation negatively,” a notification read. Domestic vaccine manufacturers will be given the option to provide vaccines directly to private hospitals. And Private hospitals will be allowed to levy a maximum of Rs 150 as service charge. As per the new rules, all citizens, irrespective of their income status, are entitled to free vaccination.

Parineeti Chopra admitted to being ‘very unhappy’ with her work in the last five years. She said that there were times when she knew that she was part of a ‘bad film’ even while shooting for it. This year, Parineeti has already had three releases -- The Girl On The Train, Saina and Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar. While the first came out directly on Netflix, the other two got a compromised theatrical release, amid the Covid-19 pandemic, and have found a wider audience since their streaming release. In an interview with a leading daily, Parineeti admitted to doing scenes that she was not convinced about. “Yeah, many scenes in many films in the last five years. I was very unhappy with the work I was doing. I had faith in myself but the filmmakers just wouldn’t offer me the parts I was yearning for. I was signing films halfheartedly. I was in a constant state of dissatisfaction. I will be forever indebted to three directors--Amol Gupte (Saina), Dibakar Banerjee (Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar), and Ribhu Dasgupta,” she said.

areena Kapoor Khan has truly been the last superstar heroine who has managed to deliver big blockbusters even post marriage and motherhood. And even post her second delivery, she is on the list of all the top filmmakers’ wanting to sign her! Kareena was approached by the makers of the upcoming mythological period saga Sita. Alaukik Desai had taken the film to Bebo a few months ago. While Kareena loved the part, she was taking her time to give the nod. A source informed Bollywood Hungama, “Kareena will shoot for Veere Di Wedding 2 and Hansal Mehta’s film first because they are smaller films that will be completed in one month’s time each. Sita will need at least 8-10 months of prep, shoot and production. So she will be completely consumed by one film at that point but Bebo also realises that this will be her biggest magnum opus till date, as it’s a retelling of Ramayana from Sita’s point of view.” While all this is fine, she has demanded a whopping figure to star in the project. “Bebo who usually asks in the Rs. 6-8 crores range for her films has quoted a sum of Rs. 12 crores which has put the producers in a tizzy. In fact, right now, they are sidering their decision and also taking the film to a younger s, as well. But talks are on and Bebo remains the first choice.”

Krushna recently took to his Instagram handle and shared a throwback video from the first episode shoot. In the video, he can be seen performing as Sapna. “Our first episode, was so excited and nervous too, first time had asked 1 crore do na, can’t wait to resume we r gonna come soon (sic),” he wrote along with the video. Meanwhile, Kapil had announced in March that they are planning to add more people to their team. “I am excited and happy to welcome new talent - actors and writers on The Kapil Sharma Show. Looking forward to meeting like-minded and talented individuals who have the right passion towards entertainment,” he had announced. The show stars Krushna Abhishek, Kiku Sharda, Bharti Singh, Sumona Chakravarti, Chandan Prabhakar, and Archana Puran Singh with the main host Kapil Sharma.

Actor Saira Banu on Monday took to Twitter to share an health update about her husband and legendary actor Dilip Kumar. She also urged fans not to believe in rumours surrounding the health of the 98-year-old Bollywood actor. Saira Banu’s note read, “Past few days my beloved husband, Yousuf Khan, has been unwell and recuperating at a hospital in Mumbai. Through this note, I want to thank all of you for keeping him in your prayers and for all the love and affection. My husband, my Kohinoor, our Dilip Kumar Sahab’s health is stable and doctors have assured me that he should be discharged soon. I urge you to not believe in rumors. While I ask you to pray for Sahab’s health, I am praying that the Almighty keep all of you safe and healthy during this pandemic. Sincerely Saira Banu Khan. Dr Jalil Parkar, who is one of the doctors treating Dilip Kumar, interacted with the media on Monday evening. He told reporters, “His health is much better now. His oxygen saturation has improved. Pvt hospitals urge govt to ensure ‘equitable distribution’ of Covid vaccines

HiIndia Newsdesk Alleging that a few hospitals, especially those that are part of large chain of corporates, have taken a “lion’s share of state’s quota of Covid-19 vaccines”, the Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association (PHANA) in Karnataka Tuesday urged the state government to appoint a nodal officer to streamline the process. According to PHANA Secretary Dr Rajashekar Y L, small and mediumscale private hospitals in the state are finding it hard to procure vaccines directly from the manufacturers. “Such hospitals are finding it difficult to place huge orders as per the demands raised by the vaccine manufacturers. With no retailer in between, these hospitals are forced to stay out of the vaccination process,” he told. Meanwhile, PHANA President Dr Prasanna H M urged the government to address such issues at the earliest. “It was these hospitals that dared the second wave and supported the government to contain the pandemic. Now, government inaction is serving them injustice,” he said.

Ahead of Tokyo Olympics, a virologist’s warning

HiIndia Newsdesk The International Olympic Committee is confident about conducting the Tokyo Olympics 2021, but the chorus against the Games is growing louder. Adding to the list of several Japanese citizens against the mega event, a renowned virologist has warned against the risks involved. Hiroshi Oshitani, professor at Tohoku University, hinted at the fact that the post-event complications could be severe. “The government and the organising committee, including the IOC (International Olympic Committee), keep saying they’re holding a safe Olympics. But everybody knows there is a risk. It’s 100 per cent impossible to have an Olympics with zero risk…of the spread of infection in Japan and also in other countries after the Olympics. There are a number of countries that do not have many cases, and a number that don’t have any variants. We should not make the Olympics to spread the virus to these countries,” Oshitani told The Times London.

Illinois Reopening Plan: Full Reopening of Businesses and Activities Throughout Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s Restore Illinois plan will mean the full reopening of all businesses and activities for the first time since the governor issued the stay-at-home order in March 2020.

HiIndia Newsdesk CHICAGO, IL – While preventive measures are still being recommended to keep the state on track to defeat the coronavirus, Illinois is on pace to fully reopen June 11. Phase 5 of Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s Restore Illinois plan will mean the full reopening of all businesses and activities for the first time since the governor issued the stay-at-home order in March 2020. As of Friday, 65 percent of Illinoisans have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, which is safe and free to all Illinois residents 12 and older. Here are 6 things to know about Illinois’ reopening plan: 1) Masks for fully vaccinated people: While businesses and municipalities may continue to require face masks and social distancing, according to the latest state and federal guidance, fully vaccinated people can ditch the face mask in indoor and outdoor settings. At outdoor businesses, unvaccinated people may choose not to wear a face mask if they can maintain a six-foot social distance while outdoors.

2) Masks for the unvaccinated: Unvaccinated people should continue to wear face masks in large crowds, especially when children are present. Immunocompromised people should also continue to wear face masks and practice social distancing. 3) Where everyone should still wear a mask: In accordance with CDC guidelines, there are still a handful of places where fully vaccinated and

unvaccinated people should all continue to wear face masks and practice social distancing, such as public transportation, congregate settings, and health care facilities, among others, and where required by federal, state, county and municipal laws and ordinances. 4) Capacity limits: Remaining capacity limits, social distancing guidelines and health mandates will be lifted for businesses, large-scale events, conventions, amusement parks, and seated-spectator venues, which will be able to operate at full capacity, just in time to take advantage of Great America’s Tsunami Surge 8-story “water coaster,” or catch a Cubs or Sox game. 5) Schools: Students, staff, and faculty in schools, day care settings, and educational institutions should continue to follow the COVID-19 guidelines of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and Illinois State Board of Education. 6) Businesses: All businesses and venues should continue to support social distancing to the greatest extent possible, especially in indoor settings. Best practices should be applied at such places as concession lines, public restrooms, and lines/queuing.

HiIndia Newsdesk WASHINGTON, DC- Under the recently announced H-2B supplemental cap temporary final rule, USCIS has received enough petitions to reach the cap for the additional 16,000 H-2B visas made available for returning workers only. We continue to accept petitions for H-2B nonimmigrant workers for the additional 6,000 visas allotted for nationals of Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador (collectively called the Northern Triangle).

We began accepting H-2B petitions on May 25 under the temporary final rule increasing the cap by up to 22,000 additional H-2B nonimmigrant visas through the end of the fiscal year (FY) 2021. Of the 22,000 additional visas, 16,000 were available only for returning workers. The remaining 6,000 visas are initially set aside for nationals from the Northern Triangle who are exempt from the returning worker requirement. In the first five business days of filing, we received petitions for more beneficiaries than the additional 16,000 visas made available for H-2B returning workers. In accordance with DHS regulations, we used a computer-generated process to conduct a random selection of petitions to meet the 16,000 returning worker allotment for FY 2021.

fter Michael Phelps heard on Monday that Naomi Osaka had pulled out of the French Open, and he read her Instagram message explaining why—Osaka cited “feeling vulnerable and anxious” in Paris, and revealed that she has suffered from “long bouts” of depression since defeating Serena Williams at the 2018 U.S. Open—a bunch of thoughts rushed into his head. Phelps is the greatest swimmer of alltime, winner of 23 Olympic gold medals. But no amount of winning staved off his depression and contemplation of suicide. Phelps, who has gone public with his struggles and emerged as one of the foremost mental health advocates in sports, could sense that Osaka’s revelations, and decision to forgo a shot at another Grand Slam title to take a mental health break, were a big deal. Osaka is a certified global superstar, the highest-paid female athlete on the planet with a huge social media imprint and endorsements from brands like Nike, Nissan and Louis Vuitton. “I felt very happy after reading her message because she’s showing that vulnerability, she’s showing a side of her that we haven’t seen before, and that’s so powerful,” Phelps tells. “It’s definitely going to be a game-changer in mental health moving forward.” Through the size of her platform, however, and her decision to choose well-being over pursuit of a Grand

According to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the reported prevalence of mental health symptoms and disorders in elite male athletes in team sports varies from 5% for burnout and alcohol use to 45% for anxiety and depression. Slam title, Osaka offers the promise of bringing mental health awareness— both inside and outside of sports—to an entirely new level. “It’s groundbreaking,” says Lisa Bonta Sumii, a therapist with Galea Health, a company that connects athletes with mental health providers. “She has prioritized mental health, and has said so. And that’s a great example.” Osaka’s move also marks the latest step in her stunning personal evolution. Few could have imagined that in less than three years, the shy then-20-year-old who apologized to Serena Williams, through tears, after beating her at the 2018 U.S. Open, would find her voice as both a social activist—at last year’s U.S. Open, which she won, Osaka wore masks honoring seven Black Americans killed in recent years—and proponent of mental health. “It goes to show that you don’t have to be this charismatic really extroverted person to be an advocate,” says Bonta Sumii. “She’s said minimal things here. It’s the act. Our behavior can be a form of advocacy.” “To me, this looked like a woman who was setting a boundary and saying I’m not going to put myself in those situations where I’m likely to experience increased risk of harm for my mental health,” says Katherine Tamminen.

‘This Will 100% Save Somebody’s Life.’ Athletes See a Turning Point for Mental Health After Naomi Osaka Takes a Stand at the French Open “We might be number one in the world and we might be one of the greatest of all time, but we’re human beings,” he says. “We deal and we feel with emotions just like you do. And we go through depression or anxiety or struggle with other things, just like everybody else does. Just because we’re number one in the world doesn’t make us invincible. - Phelps Anxiety caused Mardy Fish, a former top-10 U.S. tennis player, to drop out of a U.S. Open match against Roger Federer in 2012. “It’s incredibly naive to think that that someone that just makes a lot of money or is very successful at their career, doesn’t have stress,” says

773.526.8353 MIDWEST / EASTCOAST

In taking this stance, Osaka offers a valuable lesson for anyone experiencing anxiety. “For all of us, it’s important to take a look at these different things going on in our lives and say, you know, here are the things I’m willing to work with, and here’s where I’m not,” says Tamminen. Fish. “Everyone is entitled to their own stresses.” Phelps, who has had more success than nearly any athlete in history, says winning cannot erase your emotions. “We might be number one in the world and we might be one of the greatest of all time, but we’re human beings,” he says. “We deal and we feel with emotions just like you do. And we go through depression or anxiety or struggle with other things, just like everybody else does. Just because we’re number one in the world doesn’t make us invincible.” Pappas, who is now partnering with the online therapist directory Monarch, sees Osaka as someone who can help us move away from the win-at-allcosts ethos in sports. “This could be epiphanal,” says Pappas. “It takes a certain type of person, a certain type of energy to be like ‘Oh wow, let’s never go back.’ And we’ve seen that in other things over time, when we’ve never gone back to this, we’ve never gone back to that. And perhaps this is one of those turning points where we only go forward and forgive ourselves.” Phelps is retired from the pool. But as the Tokyo Olympics approach, with Osaka still the face of the Games for the host country, he’ll be watching from a new perspective. He predicts that Osaka, having spoken her truth, will feel a great sense of relief. And she’ll help others find their truths too. “I know how I struggled, for years, of not wanting to dive into the stuff I was holding onto,” says Phelps. “When I opened up and really started talking about it, I felt freer. This will 100% save somebody’s life. That’s something that’s bigger than we can ever imagine.”

“Everyone has a vote and a say, I think it’s really weird that athletes get told to just stick to sports,” Osaka said at Wednesday’s Talks. “You would never go up to a barber and say just stick to cutting hair. It’s a weird stigma that gets attached and I don’t even know where it comes from.”

Ankita Konwar

Around the world, many people have struggled with self-love, with the idea of embracing themselves completely and unconditionally — including the parts they are not particularly proud of. While many celebrities, too, have opened up about their struggles with loving themselves, it has become the need of the hour now. In the pandemic, many of us feel overwhelmed every day, and Ankita Konwar shares a guide on how we can feel less so. She shares eight ways in which we can love ourselves more, and husband Milind Soman also approves. He has commented on her Instagram post saying, “Will do all”. • Create a short and simple daily affirmation. When you see your reflection, whenever that may be, be sure to greet it like a loving friend. • Learn how to say no sometimes. It’s necessary that you stay true to yourself and NO, it doesn’t make you a bad person! • Take time to calm your mind. Remember, you have come so far, you’re gonna get through this too. • Dance! Whenever, wherever, however. • Embrace the things that make you different, warts and all. • Say YES to new adventures, new experiences that unfold your way. • Exercise! Take out at least 15 minutes for yourself everyday. • Laugh. As much, as loud as you can.

Mouni Roy’s fashion picks have always been a head-turner. The actor’s wardrobe is full of various silhouettes, be it ethnic ensembles or floral dresses or co-ord printed outfits. However, her affinity for traditional looks has always made our jaws hit the floor. Recently, the star posted pictures of herself wearing a yellow floral printed sharara set, and it is the perfect look for summer. Taking to her social media account, Mouni posted pictures of herself dressed in the sharara set. The ensemble is from the designer label Aachho and Mouni looked exceptional in it. The ethnic look featured a sleeveless cotton kurti adorned with floral prints in different hues and silver gota work on the hems. The top had a fitted silhouette till the torso followed by a flowy ghera, which gave the ensemble a dreamy look.

“I was so grateful about having the opportunity to play a gentleman who saw a young man folding into himself as a result of the persecution of his community and taking that opportunity to uplift him and tell him that he mattered.” n his speech Ali said that it is crucial to embrace the details that make us all so different and we must take these opportunities to build a better, more acceptable and stronger society. Ali, who himself faced persecution for converting to Islam in 2000, added a personal anecdote to his speech. “My mother is a (Christian) Minister, I’m a Muslim, she didn’t do back-flips when I called her to tell her that I converted 17 years ago. But I tell you now, we put things to the side, I’m able to see her, and she’s able to see me now, we love each other and the love is grown.”

“Anytime there is an infectious disease outbreak it is important to investigate its origin,” says Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease physician and senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security who did not contribute to the letter in Science. “The lab-leak hypothesis is possible—as is an animal spillover,” he says, “and I think that a thorough, independent investigation of its origins should be conducted.”

COVID-19 lab-leak hypothesis

Unanswered questions The origins of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 and has infected more than 171 million people, killing close to 3.7 million worldwide as of June 4, remain unclear. Many scientists, including those that participated in the WHO’s months-long investigation, believe the most likely explanation is that that it jumped from an animal to a person—potentially from a bat directly to a human, or through an intermediate host. Animal-to-human transmission is a common route for many viruses; at least two other coronaviruses, SARS and MERS, were spread through such

Three researchers from the Wuhan Institute of Virology fell sick in November 2019 and sought hospital care, according to a U.S. intelligence report zoonotic spillover. Recently disclosed evidence, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, has added fuel to the fire: Three researchers from the Wuhan Institute of Virology fell sick in November 2019 and sought hospital care, according to a U.S. intelligence report. In the final days of the Trump administration, the State Department released a statement that researchers at the institute had become ill with “symptoms consistent with both COVID-19 and common seasonal illness.” Most epidemiologists and virologists who have studied the novel coronavirus believe that it began spreading in November 2019. China says the first confirmed case was on December 8, 2019. During a briefing in Beijing this week, China’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Zhao Lijian, accused the U.S. of “hyping up the theory of a lab leak,” and asked, “does it really care about the study of origin tracing, or is it trying to divert attention?” Zhao also denied the Wall Street Journal report that three people had gotten sick. A report on the origins of COVID-19 by a US government national laboratory concluded that the hypothesis claiming the virus leaked from a Chinese lab in Wuhan is plausible and deserves further investigation, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing people familiar with the classified document. The study was prepared in May 2020 by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California and was referred by the State Department when it conducted an inquiry into the pandemic’s origins during the final months of the Trump administration, the report said. Lawrence Livermore’s assessment drew on genomic analysis of the COVID-19 virus, the Journal said. Lawrence Livermore declined to comment on the Wall Street Journal

China has accused the US of “spreading conspiracy theories” after US President Joe Biden asked officials to ‘redouble’ their efforts to probe the origin of the Covid-19 pandemic. This came amid growing calls for a full scale probe of whether the coronavirus may have escaped from China’s bio lab What have experts said?

The evidence adds up to a serious case that the SARS2 virus could have been created in a lab, from which it then escaped, wrote Wade, who refers to SARS-CoV-2 virus as SARS2 in short. Earlier this month, a group of leading UK and US scientists called for more investigation to determine the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the theory of an accidental release from a lab in Wuhan.

US experts, meanwhile, remain cautious as to the origin of the pandemic. Dr Anthony Fauci, a White House coronavirus adviser, said he and most others in the scientific community “believe that the most likely scenario is that this was a natural occurrence, but no one knows that 100% for sure.” “And since there’s a lot of concern, a lot of speculation and since no one absolutely knows that, I believe we do need the kind of investigation where there’s open transparency and all the information that’s available, to be made available, to scrutinize,” Fauci said at a Senate hearing. The truth may never be known, said Scott Gottlieb, a former head of the Food and Drug Administration. Research into the origins of the virus is critically important, said Arinjay Banerjee, a virologist at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization in Saskatchewan, Canada, because, “If you don’t know where it came from, how are you going to stop it from spreading it again?” report. President Joe Biden said last month he had ordered aides to find answers to the origin of the virus. US intelligence agencies are considering two likely scenarios - that the virus resulted from a laboratory accident or that it emerged from human contact with an infected animal - but they have not come to a conclusion, he said. Pune-based scientist couple, Dr. Rahul Bahulikar and Dr Monali Rahalkar said their theory that was initially dismissed as a conspiracy has again grabbed global attention after the US President Joe Biden ordered a probe into it.
