‘Time to end the forever war’: Biden to begin US Afghanistan exit on May 1

HiIndia Newsdesk President Joe Biden said on Wednesday he will begin withdrawing US troops from Afghanistan on May 1 to end America’s longest war, rejecting calls for US forces to stay to ensure a peaceful resolution to that nation’s grinding internal conflict.

US poised to sanction Russia for cyber-attacks

HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk The white Minnesota police officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, after appearing to mistake her handgun for her Taser will be charged with second-degree manslaughter on Wednesday, a prosecutor said, following three nights of protests over the killing. The charges against the officer, Kimberly A. Potter, come a day after she and the police chief both resigned from the Brooklyn Center Police Department. Hundreds of people have faced off with the police in Brooklyn Center each night since Wright’s death, and residents across the region are preparing for a verdict next week in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis officer charged with murdering George Floyd. Pete Orput, the top prosecutor in Washington county, said in an email to The New York Times on Wednesday that the complaint would be filed later on Wednesday. Potter warned him that she would Tase him and then shouted “Taser” three times before firing a bullet into his chest, killing him. “I just shot him,” Potter says in body-camera footage that was released this week.

The US government is set to issue a wide range of sanctions against Russia, according to reports. The move would be retaliation for cyber-attacks aimed at the US, including alleged interference in the 2020 presidential elections. The sanctions, expected as soon as Thursday, target more than 30 Russian entities and include the expulsion of at least 10 individuals from the US. Diplomats will reportedly be among those targeted. In a televised interview last month, he replied “I do” when asked if he thought Mr Putin was a “killer.” He said the days of the US “rolling over” to the Russian president were done.

President Joe Biden said on Wednesday he will begin withdrawing US troops from Afghanistan on May 1 to end America’s longest war, rejecting calls for US forces to stay to ensure a peaceful resolution to that nation’s grinding internal conflict. In a White House speech, Biden acknowledged that US objectives in Afghanistan had become “increasingly unclear” over the past decade. He set a deadline for withdrawing all 2,500 US troops remaining in Afghanistan by Sept. 11, exactly 20 years after al Qaeda’s attacks on the United States that triggered the war. But by pulling out without a clear victory, the United States opens itself to criticism that a withdrawal represents a de facto admission of failure for American military strategy. “It was never meant to be a multigenerational undertaking. We were attacked. We went to war with clear goals. We achieved those objectives,” Biden said, noting that al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed by American forces in 2011 and saying that organization has been “degraded” in Afghanistan. “And it’s time to end the forever war,” Biden added. The war has cost the lives of 2,448 American service members and consumed an estimated $2 trillion.

J&J COVID-19 vaccine in limbo as US panel delays vote on resuming shots

HiIndia Newsdesk Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine remained in limbo on Wednesday as a U.S. health panel called for more data before making a decision on how and whether to resume use of the one-dose shot, putting off a vote for a week or more. The U.S. CDC advisory panel decided to delay a vote on how best to use the J&J shot even after a U.S. Food and Drug Administration scientist told advisers he believed warnings could mitigate the risk of extremely rare but serious blood clots. Dr. Lynn Batha, an epidemiologist at the Minnesota health department, and several others spoke in favor of extending the pause to gather more safety information.

“China Increasingly Becoming A NearPeer Competitor”: Top US Intel Officer China, Avril Haines said, is employing a comprehensive approach to demonstrate its growing strength and compel regional neighbours to acquiesce to Beijing’s preferences. Washington: China is increasingly becoming a near-peer competitor of the US, posing challenges in multiple domains, while pushing to revise global norms in ways that favour the authoritarian Chinese system, a top American intelligence officer has told lawmakers. Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines on Wednesday briefed members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on the worldwide threat assessment of the US. “China increasingly is a near-peer competitor, challenging the United States in multiple areas while pushing to revise global norms in ways

that favour the authoritarian Chinese system,” she said. China, she said, is employing a comprehensive approach to demonstrate its growing strength and compel regional neighbours to acquiesce to Beijing’s preferences, including its claims over disputed territory and assertions of sovereignty over Taiwan. “It also has substantial cyber capabilities that, if deployed at a minimum, can cause localised temporary disruptions to critical infrastructure inside the United States,” Avril Haines said. Russia, Iran and North Korea are the other three countries that Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines briefed members of the Senate pose threats to the United States, she said. Pakistan to outlaw Path Of Future World Order hardline Islamist group Will Be Set In Indo-Pacific Region: EU Council President Tehrik-i-Labaik

Denmark becomes first country to stop using AstraZeneca jabs

HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: In many ways, the path of the future world order will be set in the Indo-Pacific region as it has become a global economic and political centre of gravity, President of EU Council Charles Michel said on Wednesday. In an address at the Raisina Dialogue, he also said that the European Union’s partnership with India is a cornerstone of the bloc’s geopolitical strategy and it is determined to further develop the ties. “It is in our common interest to show that the democratic and open model is the most powerful one to address the challenges of the world,” he said

HiIndia Newsdesk Denmark on Wednesday became the first country to stop using AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine altogether, following news of its possible link to very rare blood clot cases, health authorities said. The decision will push back the scheduled conclusion of Denmark’s vaccination scheme to early August from July 25, they said. Results of investigations into the blood clots “showed real and serious side effects”, health agency head Soren Brostrom said in a statement. “Based on an overall consideration, we have, therefore, chosen to continue the vaccination programme for all target groups without this vaccine.”

HiIndia Newsdesk Pakistan is to outlaw a hardline Islamist group that railed against blasphemy on its rise to prominence, a minister said on Wednesday, the third day of violent protests by the group in which two police officers have been killed and 340 wounded. The government said it has also arrested 1,400 workers of the group that is agitating against the arrest of its chief ahead of countrywide rallies to denounce the publication of cartoons in Franc. Paramilitary troops were deployed overnight to clear the protests by the Tehrik-i-Labaik Pakistan, which has blocked rail tracks, highways and entry and exit routes to all major cities.

Egypt seizes ship that blocked Suez Myanmar Canal over $900m compensation claim protesters paint

HiIndia Newsdesk Egypt will impound the giant container ship that blocked the Suez Canal last month until its Japanese owner pays $900m (£652m) in compensation.

One of the Ever Given’s insurers, UK Club, said the Suez Canal Authority had rejected its offer to settle the claim. It described the claim, which includes $300m for a salvage bonus and $300m for loss of reputation, as “extraordinarily large” and “largely unsupported”. The Ever Given is anchored in the Great Bitter Lake, the canal’s midway point. The 400m-long (1,312ft), 220,000-tonne ship became wedged diagonally across the waterway on 23 March after running aground amid high winds and a sandstorm that affected visibility. It was freed six days later, after a salvage operation involving a flotilla of powerful tug boats and dredging vessels that shifted an estimated 30,000 cubic metres (1.1m cubic ft) of mud and sand.

Iran to enrich uranium to St Vincent volcano: UN 60% after ‘wicked’ nuclear warns humanitarian crisis site attack will last months

HiIndia Newsdesk Iran will produce 60%-enriched uranium in retaliation for a suspected Israeli attack on a nuclear site, President Hassan Rouhani says, bringing it closer to the purity required for a weapon. A blast knocked out the power system at Natanz on Sunday, causing damage to thousands of uranium centrifuges. Mr Rouhani warned the perpetrators that enrichment would now be ramped up as a response to “your wickedness”.

HiIndia Newsdesk The humanitarian crisis caused by volcanic eruptions on the Caribbean island of St Vincent will last for months, a UN official has warned. Didier Trebucq said nearby islands including Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda could also be badly affected. He said the UN was setting up an international funding appeal. About 20,000 people have been evacuated from their homes since La Soufrière volcano began erupting last Friday.

govt offices red

HiIndia Newsdesk Opponents of Myanmar’s coup splashed red paint and dye on roads and signs outside government offices on Wednesday to represent the blood of people killed protesting against the junta, on the second day of the traditional new year holiday. The display aimed at shaming the military took place in various towns and cities, according to pictures posted by media outlets, as people answered a call by activists to join what they termed a bloody paint strike. Some people marched with signs calling for the release of the leader of the ousted government, Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. She has been detained since the February 1 coup on various charges including violating an official secrets act that could see her imprisoned for 14 years. Her lawyers have denied the charges against her. “Please save our leader — future — hope,” read a sign with a picture of Suu Kyi held by a young woman among several thousand people marching in the second city of Mandalay, according to a picture published by the Mizzima news service. There were no immediate reports of violence at any of the protests on Wednesday, but information has become scarce because of junta curbs on the Internet. The coup has plunged Myanmar into crisis after 10 years of tentative steps towards democracy

Covid cases explode in India: Experts tell you how worse second wave could get An oxygen crisis. A beds and drugs shortage. Overflowing crematoriums and burial grounds. As Covid cases explode in India, top experts share their views on how worse the second wave could be and suggest potential solutions. Prof. Bhramar mukherjee, professor of epidemiology and chair of biostatistics at the school of public health, university of michigan: It’s really hard to watch these reports coming from all over India. I feel a year of work has gone to complete waste for many of us. I do think the next four weeks are going to be hard for India. April is the cruelest month. Most models predict 5 lakh cases, 25,000 hospitalisations and 3-4,000 deaths every day. This is deeply concerning and I really hope that something is done so that these projections are beaten by policy, public health authorities and public cooperation. The virus doesn’t listen to state border patrols. So to assume that any mutant is restricted to Maharashtra will not be correct. The more it

DAYS after Russian Foreign minister S erge y L av rov e cho e d B eijing’s description of the Quad grouping as an “Asian NATO”, India, France and Australia underlined their common ground on the Indo-Pacific even as they marked their differences on Myanmar. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar Wednesday said those using terms like “Asian NATO” are playing “mind games” and New Delhi will not have others “veto” on what is it going to discuss, and with whom. “So, that kind of NATO mentality has never been India’s. Kumbh Mela Will Not Be Cut Tihar looks for 3,468 inmates gone Short, Say Officials ‘missing’ while on Covid parole

Well done, Modiji for listening to our advice: Cong on CBSE exams decision

After CBSE Class 12 examinations were postponed and Class 10 exams were cancelled, Congress took to Twitter and wrote, “Well done Modi ji, listening to the sound advice from Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Congress will go a long way in mending our nation.” “It’s our democratic duty to work together for the betterment of our people,” the party added.

HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: The mega Kumbh Mela at Haridwar will continue till April 30 and there has been no discussion to close it early on account of surging Covid infections, officials said today as they denied any move to wrap up the event two weeks early. “The Kumbh Mela used to begin in January, but looking at the Covid situation, the state government decided to start it in April this time. The centre’s SOP said because of the situation, the duration would be reduced. I have no information of it being curtailed,” said Deepak Rawat, District Magistrate, Haridwar, and Kumbh Mela officer. Earlier today, there were reports of discussions between the Uttarakhand government and religious leaders who have so far remained unconvinced about cancelling the event. But officials said this evening no discussions took place and the Kumbh gathering would continue uninterrupted.

HiIndia Newsdesk Of the 6,740 prisoners at Tihar Jail who were released on parole last year in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, 3,468 have gone “missing”. Jail authorities have now approached the Delhi Police to help trace them. Most of the convicts and undertrial prisoners suffering illnesses such as HIV, cancer, kidney dysfunction requiring dialysis, Hepatitis B or C, asthma and TB were released last year to decongest the prison as Covid cases rose. Tihar, with a cumulative capacity of holding 10,026 inmates, is one of the largest prison complexes in South Asia. 1,184 were convicted inmates let out of Delhi’s three jails, at Tihar, Mandoli, Rohini. “They were initially released for eight weeks, which was later extended from time to time. They were finally supposed to surrender between February 7 and March 6. But out of 1,184, 112 are missing.

s the term

WOOD

AR Rahman has expanded his role in filmmaking and turned writer-producer with the upcoming musical, 99 Songs. In this interview, Rahman talks about bringing a new voice to Indian movies, why he hates the term Bollywood and how he fought cliches of the industry.

F

ilmmaking is a five-six year old process. It’s not like I am doing something on the spot and people are judging me. There are many layers of checks, test screenings. Because the sensibility of our movie is slightly different from what’s coming out, we wanted to make sure we got the right reaction from people because they deserve to see many different voices. It shouldn’t be the same kind of formula. So that’s the one thing I believed in, that each production should have a voice and nothing should be generic or that this is how Indian movies are. Already we are making our movie industry generic by calling it Bollywood. Anything that comes from any part of the country is called Bollywood, which is also a rip-off of Hollywood. It’s disrespect to our filmmakers and amazing workers. When you go out and meet people like the stuntmen, camera people, you understand how talented and underrated they are and how they take a risk to do movies. I want to show respect to all of them and that’s one of the reasons why I campaigned against saying the word Bollywood is so generic and condescending to us. But that’s another chapter… So, we wanted to have a voice and this voice should have its own character and future.

Superstars do fake acting

Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui says that aspiring actors need you show something good, something that is interesting to make sure they have their unique style while entering and original, I would want to see that,” he told showbiz, adding that if they intend to copy the superstars, “In the beginning, it was because of cause and passion. they will not be liked by the audience. “I would just like Now, because of the lockdown and films not releasing to say from my experience that you should not lose your in theatres, these big stars are coming to OTT. That is originality. These superstars do fake acting, so don’t get not a good thing. Now there are big OTT platforms that carried away with it. I want to see your original acting. If are taking these big stars. Why didn’t these stars come you are acting like a superstar, why would I watch you. If before?” he says.

Vidya Balan: The ‘Mask’erade is not over yet Bollywood actress Vidya Balan on Monday took reminded fans to wear masks amid the ongoing second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has badly affected Maharashtra. “Let’s not forget that the ‘Mask’erade is not over yet,” Vidya wrote, with a photograph of herself on Instagram. Vidya’s advice to netizens comes after India reported 1,68,912 new Covid-19 cases over the last 24 hours, setting another grim one-day record. The actress recently took a sarcastic jibe at bodyshamers on social media. On World Health Day, she wrote on Instagram: “People always turn around and tell me that your weight is equivalent to your health but your weight should be a part of your health and not its identity - Happy World Health Day. #worldhealthday.” Vidya will next be seen in “Sherni”, for which she has been shooting in Madhya Pradesh. The film, directed by Amit Masurkar, casts her as a forest officer.

The Incredible Music Journey of Darshan Raval is both the calm and the storm. There’s something peculiarly tranquil about the way he talks and moves. Not a word is spoken out of context, not a demand made out of habit””something you barely expect of a 24-yearold mega-celebrity. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you would know that Raval is currently India’s biggest breakout music star. And–as we soon find out–perhaps its humblest too. Raval rose to super stardom by understanding and balancing an organic digital growth with a successful Bollywood career, while simultaneously cementing a reputation as an artist who is unwilling to sacrifice creativity. It’s a new definition of what it means to be a mainstream singer in India, and perhaps an answer to the question of how to establish yourself in a country that’s obsessed with Bollywood, but also hungry for new forms of content outside it. “It’s not an overnight process,” Raval says. “If I start telling people that I am an independent artist, they won’t know what it is. ”˜independent music’ is still new to a lot of people.)” Because when the definition of ”˜independent music’ changes depending on who you ask, the process of creating an identity around it is more complicated than one might think. “People will want to find out who the singer is so they’ll say, ”˜Let’s go to YouTube’,” he explains, adding that they’ll need to find something solid once they get there for an artist to make a lasting impression. “That’s how they find out, ”˜Oh he does his own music too’.” When I was very small, I was away from my parents–I was in dayboarding and every kid had to take up an activity. People took up things like horse-riding or other such activities but I failed in everything! Now there was a huge hall where students used to practice music. One day I was very homesick so I went and sat there and listened to them and it was so pure and beautiful and that’s how music came into my life. It’s how I started to listen to music and then I wanted to make songs, I wanted to make melodies like that, I wanted to write songs. The entire purpose of my life started.

oughly 1 in 10 Americans have diabetes with approximately 90-95% of them having Type 2 diabetes and 26.8% aged 65 and above. This type of diabetes is often referred to as a ‘lifestyle’ disease because factors such as being overweight, inactivity and age increase the risk of developing it. Age is clearly something we cannot control, however the health and fitness of our loved ones is something we can influence, encourage and certainly keep tabs on and in this article we are going to explore the ways in which we can do this.

Remember that the sugar in fruit also counts, so whilst it is healthy it should still be limited. When it potentially gets more difficult is if your parent or loved one is in a care home meaning there is less control over what they eat. Make sure the care home knows about their condition and ask for a sample menu so that you can check it suits their dietary needs.

Know Your Levels

However, people with diabetes need to more aware of this than most, as what they eat has an effect on their glucose levels and so it is important to learn not only the best foods to eat, but also how much to eat and when. If you are caring for a loved one with diabetes yourself, you are likely in control of what they eat and so it is up to you to ensure they have a diet low in sugar and saturated fats.

As the old saying goes “knowledge is power” and the most important thing you can do for your loved one is to remind them to regularly check their blood sugar levels.

Notice The Signs Older people with diabetes are at a much higher risk of hypoglycemia (often referred to as a ‘hypo’), especially if they are on medication for their diabetes. Hypoglycemia is a condition in which blood sugar levels are lower than normal. If left untreated, it can cause confusion, clumsiness, or fainting and in severe cases can lead to seizures, coma, and even death. The signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia to look out for include: * Feeling hungry * Sweating * Dizziness * Tiredness/fatigue * Blurred vision. * Trembling or shakiness * Going pale * Fast pulse or palpitations These signs can be less obvious in older people and in some cases they could experience hypoglycemia without showing any symptoms at all. If this is the case, it is important to look out for Many people know that working out and eating well is a good habit, but they might not know that these same habits can also benefit them financially. For instance, you’ll often get lower life insurance premiums by making better choices. By maintaining these habits, you’ll ensure that you can protect both yourself and your family. In this article we look at how leading a healthier lifestyle can save you money.

Lower Life Insurance Premiums Many health insurance companies offer fitness programs or reward you for taking specific steps to manage your health. That’s because you are not at as high of a risk of particular health conditions, and you are not as risky to insure. And when you sign up for life insurance, you’ll likely need to give some information on your lifestyle. Then the company can determine if there is much chance that they’ll need to pay out.

Reducing Expensive Habits B oth drinking and smoking are examples of habits that reduce your income, while damaging your health. And while you likely understand the health implications of smoking, you might not be familiar with the financial ones. If you spend just $6 each day on cigarettes, you’ll be spending over

19

Exercise Regularly But Safely

Watching your loved ones get older can be difficult, especially if they are dealing with health issues that affect the way they would normally live their lives. Older people are much more susceptible to illness, which is why it is important for them to remain as fit and healthy for as long as possible. And this is even more true if they have a pre-existing health condition, such as diabetes, that can mask certain symptoms and that come with their own complications. the more subtle changes in behaviour, such as the inability to concentrate, morning headaches and sleep disturbance. Older people may also have added risk factors which can increase the risk of hypoglycemia. For example if they suffer from chronic kidney problems, they have an unhealthy diet,

they have another underlying illness or condition, or as previously mentioned if they are on certain diabetes medication.

Eat A Healthy Diet Regardless of whether you are diabetic or not, eating a nutrient rich and balanced diet is key to good health.

Why A Healthier Lifestyle Can Actually Save You Money Drinking can also cost you a lot of money. Even if you and your household only go through a pack each week, that’s still several hundred dollars every year. And depending on the amount that you smoke or drink, the amount you’ll save might be even more. $2,100 annually on the habit. Drinking can also cost you a lot of money. Even if you and your household only go through a pack each week, that’s still several hundred dollars every year. And depending on the amount that you smoke or drink, the amount you’ll save might be even more.

The American Diabetes Association recommends exercising 30 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week. It sounds a lot, especially for older people who may be less mobile. But exercise doesn’t necessarily mean high intensity workouts, even going for a walk, doing the gardening, or practising some low intensity Thai chi or yoga all counts towards helping you stay fit and healthy. You could even split this up into 10 minutes of activity 3 times a day to make it more manageable. For diabetics, the best time to exercise is between one to three hours after eating, as this is when blood sugar levels are likely to be higher. You should always test your blood sugar before exercising and then again 30 minutes later to see if the levels are stable. Aerobic exercise such as walking, swimming, and cycling can help to control glucose levels.

Savings On Food You might be surprised that changing your eating habits can also lead to significant savings. It doesn’t mean spending more on organic products or expensive health foods. But if you reduce snacking and lower your portion sizes, you won’t have to spend as much and it will therefore save you money. Snack foods are often disproportionally expensive than what you get, so consider swapping out these items with fresh fruits and vegetables when you’re hungry. Reducing the amount of times you eat out is another excellent way of seeing significant savings. Instead of purchasing your lunch at work, try preparing meals ahead of time that you can heat up. When you eat more food you prepare yourself, you’ll also be able to purchase some items in bulk, saving you even more. And of course, it’s often healthier to cook your food instead of going out to eat.

Lower Transportation Costs If you live close enough to different places that you can walk or bike to them, it will save you money on transportation as well. It’s good exercise to walk and bike, and it reduces wear on your vehicle. Plus, you won’t have to spend as much to fill it up. You can save a significant amount each year by reducing how

NEW FORMS OF THE VIRUS, SAME FIGHT! It’s been a long year of change. And now, even COVID is changing—with new forms of the virus called variants that may spread more easily. But one thing is the same: our determination to help slow the spread of COVID.
