Joe Rogan says he tested positive for Covid-19
President offers a glimpse of a different American foreign policy in the post-9/11 world
HiIndia Newsdesk President Biden on Tuesday forcefully rejected criticism of his decision to end America’s 20-year war in Afghanistan, hailing what he called the “extraordinary success” of the evacuation of Kabul and declaring the end of an era in which the US uses military power “to remake other countries”.
Mr Zelensky (finally) goes to Washington
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky and US president Joe Biden met at the White House on Wednesday
HiIndia Newsdesk
A year can be a lifetime in politics. The past two probably qualify as a generation's worth of lifetimes, so a reader might be forgiven for not quite remembering why the name of Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky rings a bell. Mr Zelensky was asked two years ago by Donald Trump to do the then-US president "a favour" - to announce that his government was investigating Joe Biden, who had just launched his bid for the White House. In exchange, Mr Zelensky would get a trip to Washington and military aid. Mr Trump did not get his hoped-for announcement (his request instead triggered his impeachment) and Mr Zelensky did not get his Washington visit until today - with nowPresident Biden - posing in the Oval Office for photos with the man whose campaign he was asked to sink.
Speaking to the nation less than a week after a terrorist bombing killed 13 service members at the Kabul airport during a chaotic rush to leave the country, Biden said the costs to the US would have been even higher if he had allowed the nation to remain mired for years in a civil war that has dragged on for decades. In blunt terms, he claimed the only alternative to the departure he oversaw was another escalation of the war. “When I hear we could have, should have continued the so-called low-grade effort in Afghanistan, at low risk to our service members, at low cost,” Biden said in the 26-minute speech, “I don’t think enough people understand how much we’ve asked of the 1 per cent of this country who put that uniform on.” “There’s nothing low grade or low risk or low cost about any war,” he continued. “It’s time to end the war in Afghanistan.”
HiIndia Newsdesk New York : Joe Rogan, one of the world's highest paid and most influential podcast hosts, announced Wednesday he has tested positive for Covid-19 and said he'd embarked on a fringe treatment regime. In a video posted to his official Instagram account, Rogan said he felt "very weary" on Saturday and got tested for Covid-19 the following day. He said ahead of the test he quarantined from his family and "throughout the night, I got fevers and sweats and I knew what was going on."

Afghanistan crisis: Unclear if ruthless Australia aims to ‘live with Taliban will change, says US general virus’ instead of eliminating it The top US general has described the Taliban as a "ruthless group" and says it is unclear whether they will change.
US forces withdrew from Afghanistan on Tuesday, ending America's longest war 20 years after launching an invasion to oust the Taliban. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews flagged a staggered easing of the tough restrictions once 70% of the state's adult residents receive at least one dose, a milestone he hopes to reach at least by September 23 HiIndia Newsdesk Australian authorities on Wednesday extended the COVID-19 lockdown in Melbourne for another three weeks, as they shift their focus to rapid vaccination drives and move away from a suppression strategy to bring cases down to zero. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews flagged a staggered easing of the tough restrictions once 70% of the state’s adult residents receive at least one dose, a milestone he hopes to reach at least by September 23, based on current vaccination rates. “We have thrown everything at this, but it is now clear to us that we are not going to drive these numbers down, they are instead going to increase,” Andrews told reporters in Melbourne, the state capital, after a lockdown for nearly a month failed to quell the outbreak. The lockdown was due to end on Thursday.

Al Qaeda: Call to liberate Kashmir
The government is not confident that it knows how many people eligible to come to the UK remain in Afghanistan, Dominic Raab says.
HiIndia Newsdesk Around 15,000 have been evacuated since the country fell to the Taliban. Addressing MPs, the foreign secretary said he would be leaving for the region later for talks on those left behind. He also said that the UK was "caught out" by the speed
of the fall of Kabul, with intelligence expecting it to hold until the end of the year. But the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, Tom Tugendhat, said a Foreign Office risk report from 22 July predicted a "very real danger of cities collapsing" after US forces withdrew. The Tory MP later told BBC Radio 5 Live that he was "a bit surprised" that Mr Raab did not seem to know about the document. The Foreign Office said it was a standard monthly report which did not contain intelligence assessments. Mr Raab was grilled by the committee's MPs on a number of aspects of the UK's withdrawal from Afghanistan last month.
China steps in to regulate Japan finds black particles brutal '996' work culture in Moderna vaccine
HiIndia Newsdesk On Tuesday, Al Qaeda called on the Taliban to "liberate" Kashmir, Palestine, Yemen and other "Islamic lands" just as they liberated Afghanistan from the US occupation. In a message congratulating the Taliban, the terrorist group said that the victory of insurgents in Afghanistan demonstrated what the Islamic nation is capable of, adding that “jihad is the only way” towards “victory and empowerment”. "It is time for you to prepare for the next stage of the struggle, the way for which has been paved by the victory of the defiant Afghan nation," al Qaeda said, asserting that the victory of the Taliban is a prelude to the “liberation” of the rest of the Islamic nations.

Jallianwala Bagh Indian outrage over revamp of memorial
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the renovated Jallianwala Bagh complex in the northern city of Amritsar on Saturday. Hundreds of Indians were shot by British troops while attending a public meeting at the site in 1919. The massacre was a turning point in India's nationalist movement. The grounds of Jallianwala Bagh - with its stone monument, porticos and pathways - have since served as a sombre reminder of India's painful past, and have attracted tourists from across the world.

And the Martyrs' Well - in which many people are believed to have jumped to escape the bullets - has been covered with a transparent barrier. Mr Modi said the renovated Jallianwala Bagh "will remind the new generation about the history of this holy place and will inspire to learn a lot about its past". But critics called the move insensitive, and accused the government of trying to erase and distort the country's history. Historian Kim Wagner called it a "part of the general Disneyfication of the old city of Amritsar", adding that the revamping of the site "means that the last traces of the event have effectively

Eminent historian S Irfan Habib called the project a "corporatisation of monuments," that has been done "at the cost of history, cost of heritage". "It is absolutely gaudy...Why should there be murals on the wall?" he said. Political opponents also criticised Mr Modi's government for the decision. Main opposition leader Rahul Gandhi led the charge, saying his Congress party was against "this indecent cruelty". "Such an insult to the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh can only be done by those who do not know the meaning of martyrdom," Mr Gandhi tweeted. "I am the son of a martyr - I will not tolerate the insult of martyrs at any cost." Mr Gandhi's father Rajiv Gandhi, a former prime minister, was assassinated in 1991, in what was seen as retaliation for Indian involvement in Sri Lanka's civil war, after peacekeepers were deployed there in 1987. Priyanka Chaturvedi, a leader of the Shiv Sena party in Maharashtra state, said that by trying to "beautify or modify" a place that evokes painful memories for many, the government was "doing great damage" to India's collective history. British MP Preet Kaur Gill tweeted:
"Our history being erased. Why?" Shwait Malik, an Indian MP belonging to the ruling BJP and a member of the Jallianwala Bagh Trust, defended the renovation. "These sculptures in the lane will make visitors conscious of those who walked in on that day… Earlier, people walked this narrow lane without knowing its history, now they will walk with history," he said. Indian nationalists protesting against heavy war taxes and the forced conscription of Indian soldiers had gathered at the site on the fateful day in 1919. Others were celebrating the city's Sikh Baisakhi festival and found themselves mixed up with the demonstrators. British colonial authorities had earlier declared martial law in Amritsar and banned public meetings due to a rise in public demonstrations. Without warning, Gen Dyer blocked the exits and ordered his troops to fire on the crowd. They stopped firing 10 minutes later when their ammunition ran out. The death toll is disputed - an inquiry set up by the colonial authorities put the figure at 379 but Indian sources put it nearer to 1,000.

Hindu American body campaigns against dismantling Hindutva conference

indu American Foundation (HAF), an Indian American advocacy group with chapters across the United States, is continuing its campaign of sending letters to universities that have been listed as sponsoring an upcoming virtual conference titled Dismantling Global Hindutva (DGH), scheduled for September 10–12. The petition to university and college authorities raises concerns over Hinduphobia. “The DGH organisers trade on the prestige of your institution’s

The event platforms activists with extensive histories of amplifying Hinduphobic discourse even while denying the existence of Hinduphobia,” the petition states. Meanwhile, a prominent Indian American state senator from Ohio, Niraj Antani, has thanked HAF for leading the charge against this bigotry, in a statement. He has himself strongly condemned hosting the ‘Dismantling Global Hindutva’ conference. HAF’s executive director, Suhag Shukla told that while the organisation was not asking that the event be cancelled or that scholar-activists from the institutions not be allowed to participate; but institutionally, there was a duty to encourage a diversity of viewpoints alongside academic freedom and free speech. “We need to be sure that Hindu students, staff, and faculty at each of these institutions are supported through all of this. The recent example of Rashmi
Samant, a student from India in the UK, being stripped of her position as the student union president at Oxford University is an overt example of the harm this kind of political activism promulgated by scholar-activists can result in,” Shukla said. She added that there was a more subtle impact of silencing Hindu students or fomenting hostility towards them by portraying them as inherently bigoted and dangerous. “The Hindutva harassment field manual, one of the recommended sources of the dismantling Hindutva conference, is particularly concerning in this regard.” According to a statement by HAF, the event organisers of the conference had, due to public outcry and several direct requests from universities removed the display of logos and replaced it with a list of virtually the same universities with a disclaimer that it was specific departments and centres which were contributing to or sponsoring the event. The actual names of the department or centres, however, were not included, Shukla pointed out. The initial effort by HAF to send emails to university presidents delivered slightly more than 928,000 emails in the span of 48 hours. The response was so robust that HAF was forced to move to collect signatures for a petition to be delivered to the same group of university administrators. “We support the rights of academics in their individual capacity to engage in political activism concerning India. But leave universities, and by extension university departments, centres, and institutes out because, aside from potentially violating tax-exempt status, it stifles open enquiry,” said Shukla. “Students and faculty must have the freedom to explore questions, posit

Salman Khan, Rekha reveal exciting ‘jungle’ twist prepared for contestants
Bigg Boss 15 makers have dropped the new promo for the reality show, featuring Salman Khan as the host. In the new teaser, Salman is a forest officer, talking to ‘Vishwasuntree’ (voiced by Rekha). He stands where the the Bigg Boss house used to be, as apparently, there’s a rather new
twist this season. The promo begins with Vishwasuntree telling Salman that she has been waiting for him for the past 15 years. Salman waxes lyrical with his responses, saying that he can’t find the Bigg Boss house. Rekha goes on to tell him that the housemates

Bigg Boss 15 new promo features Rekha as 'Vishwasuntree' who tells Salman Khan about the new challenge that the contestants will have to face. would have to go through the jungle before entering the house. Following this, Salman then warns the viewers about the unfolding trouble ready to befall the contestants. Speaking about her maiden association with Bigg Boss, Rekha had said in a statement, “Bigg Boss is a very ‘naayab’ show, that has it all, drama, action, fun and thrill and what’s more, you get a crash course of life itself. And if one is patient and resilient, one will evolve to be one’s best self! What could be better poetic justice than that. I am glad to be collaborating with COLORS for the promos of Bigg Boss 15. It is going to be an exciting new experience, as I am doing a Voice Over for a ‘speaking tree’ whom Salman has fondly named ‘Vishwasuntree’, a vibrant tree full of wisdom, hope and faith.”
Kunal Kapoor on 'The Empire'
Kapoor says he tried to be honest to Babur, a man of many contradictions. “Babur in the show is probably different from how Babur was [in real life]. We were being honest to the way the character was written in the book. In the book, he was a physically strong man who was emotionally vulnerable, even weak sometimes. He is the emperor, but is crippled with self-doubt. He is constantly asking himself if he is good enough for the throne. I found these nuances fascinating. I saw in him a man torn between the voice of his father — a softer, poetic man [Umar Sheikh Mirza II] — and his ambitious grandmother [Aisan Daulat Begum]. In historical dramas, there is a tendency to make it theatrical. I wanted him to come across as relatable.” Many had thought that things would look up for the actor post Veeram (2017), the acclaimed Malayalam rendition of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Does he feel that he didn’t get his due? “The moment you say you didn’t get your [due], or you should’ve got more, it will make you a bitter person. I don’t want to project myself as a victim of the industry. I live in the present. I am being offered exciting work and I would rather focus on that.”

Representative image
HiIndia Newsdesk NEW YORK, NY — Refugees fleeing Afghanistan could soon be processed and temporarily housed inside a JFK Airport cargo building. U.S. officials spent Monday converting and prepping the site location, the New York Daily News first reported. The airport’s Building 87 could be the point of arrival to the United States for many Afghans after escaping the Taliban’s quick takeover of Afghanistan following the withdrawal of the U.S. military there. Sources told the newspaper that the
Dismantling Global Hindutva’ conference anti-Hindu, says US State Senator HiIndia Newsdesk A prominent American State Senator has strongly condemned hosting of the ‘Dismantling Global Hindutva’ conference and described it as an anti-Hindu gathering as several universities asked the organisers to remove their logos from the site of the event which has generated outrage among Hindu Americans. “This conference represents a disgusting attack on Hindus across the United States, and we must all condemn this as no thing more than racism and bigotry against Hindus. I will always stand strong against Hinduphobia,” Ohio State Senator Niraj Antani said in a statement. “I am condemning in the strongest possible terms the ‘Dismantling Global Hindutva’ Conference,” he said. Antani is the youngest Hindu elected official in the history of the United States and is the first Indian American state senator in Ohio history.
refugees are expected to begin arriving at the building in the coming days. The last military planes left Kabul on Monday, ending America’s longest war after nearly 20 years. U.S. military aircraft evacuated more than 79,000 civilians from Hamid Karzai International Airport, which includes 6,000 Americans and more than 73,500 third-country nationals and Afghan civilians, the U.S. Department of Defense reported. “In total, U.S. and coalition aircraft combined to evacuate more than 123,000 civilians, which were all enabled by U.S. military service members who were securing and operating the airfield,” Marine Corps Gen. Frank McKenzie, the commander of U.S. Central Command said from the Pentagon on Monday. This was the largest non-combatant evacuation operation, which began Aug. 14, ever conducted by the U.S. military, the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed. While the military evacuation is complete, officials at the Pentagon said that the diplomatic mission to ensure additional U.S. citizens and eligible Afghans who want to leave continues. “I have asked the Secretary of State to lead the continued coordination with our international partners to ensure safe passage for any Americans, Afghan partners, and foreign nationals who want to leave Afghanistan,” President Joe Biden said in a statement. “The Taliban has made commitments on safe passage, and the world will hold them to their commitments.”

Indian-Origin Tech Executive Sentenced to 2 Years
Mukund Mohan
HiIndia Newsdesk SEATTLE, WA- A Washington state tech executive has been sentenced to two years in prison after fraudulently obtaining nearly $1.8 million in federal COVID-19 disaster relief loans. Mukund Mohan, of Clyde Hill, previously worked for Microsoft and Amazon and was making more than $200,000 a year as the chief of technology for the Canadian e-commerce company BuildDirect when he was arrested in July 2020. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Seattle said he submitted eight fraudulent Paycheck Protection Program loan applications seeking $5.5 million for companies he purportedly ran, and he actually received almost $1.8 million. Mohan’s attorneys sought a 60-day sentence, noting Mohan had no criminal history and had spent only $16,500 of the money. They said his actions, possibly triggered by mental health issues, were such an aberration for him that he fainted when federal agents knocked on his door. Federal authorities were able to seize the money from Mohan’s accounts. He paid back the amount he had spent and was ordered to pay a $100,000 fine. Manish Lachwani, the co-founder of Headspin, was arrested Aug. 24 and charged with securities fraud, Stephanie Hinds, the acting federal prosecutor in San Francisco announced Aug. 25. Prosecutors alleged that he exaggerated the company’s revenues while it was seeking investments in the startup when he served as its CEO. This caused the company’s valuation to jump to $1.1 billion but it dropped to $300 million when the overstatement of the revenue was discovered, prosecutors said in their complaint. Before the discrepancy was found, investors had already made investments in the company, according to the prosecutors. n a news release, Corinne Kalve, acting special agent in charge of IRS Criminal Investigation, attributed the crime to Mohan’s greed, saying that when people abuse such benefit programs “they are stealing from those that are most vulnerable.”

Rishabh Pant in corridor of uncertainty What is eating Rishabh Pant? It could be Ollie Robinson getting him four times in five outings. Or the back-oflength trajectory from over the stumps that slants across him. Or could be his decision to station himself too far outside the crease. Or it could be his eagerness to influence a match. Or it could be one reason leading to another. Since landing in England for the World Test Championship final, Pant has struggled. The 41 in the second innings of the WTC match best sums up his neither-here-nor-there approach.
23 23
Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has paid glowing tributes to noted coach Vasu Paranjape, who died in Mumbai on Monday, terming him one of the best coaches he has worked with. The 82-year-old Paranjape died at his residence in Matunga and survived by his wife and son Jatin Paranjape, an ex-national selector and cricketer. Remembering the man, who donned many hats, Tendulkar said in a statement, "Vasu sir, as I have always known him, was one of the best coaches I have worked with. He has been an integral part of my cricketing journey since childhood and a mentor in many ways."
‘Vasoo will now be discussing cricket with Don Bradman, Len Hutton up there’: Gavaskar
HiIndia Newsdesk We all lost our captain, one of the greatest, one of the most passionate about the game of ours. I was just discussing with (Vasoo Paranjape’s son) Jatin, that he will now be discussing cricket with Don Bradman, Sir Len Hutton up there. He left us with wonderful memories. His discipline – I remember at the Dadar Union ground, he used to be the first one to reach. Never got late. Amongst the things he told us was that it is a sport, winning and losing are part of it, but the most important part of it is to enjoy the game.
There were times in that innings he looked to knuckle down, even resisting boundary balls, before, in a burst of madness, he would attempt a reverse-lap or brazenly come down the track to Kyle Jamieson. Pant veered between extremes. Someone like Pant shall always live and die by the sword, his best and worst moments would be entwined in his shot-happy ways, but here he had looked too hurried and jumpy, going either too hard or too timidly at the ball, as if the old defend-or-destroy dilemma had relapsed. Just at a time when it had seemed that he had cracked the code of batting in Tests and seemed to genuinely enjoy the challenges, it threw up. It’s this clarity of thought, the awareness of the ripest moment to dial the big shots, that has been missing from Pant’s game in England. It’s not that he should temper his batting, eschew risks completely, but reacquaint with the maturity that his batting had blazed in Australia and later against England in India. A time when the madness and methods of his batting aligned in harmonious symmetry. It’s this harmonious symmetry that he would look to reconquer when he reaches the venue of his first Test hundred, three years ago. And it’s not Robinson that’s eating him, rather his own cluttered mind.

Can the US crack down on fake vaccination cards? As more people in the US are asked to prove they have been vaccinated in order to work, study or socialise, a flourishing black market in fake vaccination cards has sprung up. But what can be done to tackle it?
T
he operator behind "Covid19vaccinecardsss" took just seconds to reply. One of a slew of Instagram accounts hawking fake proof of Covid-19 vaccination cards, whoever was running the page was eager to sell, inviting the BBC to move over to an encrypted messaging app to make a deal. For $100 (£70), the vendor would deliver a "registered" card, with either the logo of the US Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) or Britain's National Health Service. Payment could be made in Apple Pay or Bitcoin and delivery would be "discrete" and within 24 hours, they promised. "Your cards will be saved into the database system," they told the BBC. "[These are] very good original vaccine cards, no worries." As the Delta variant of coronavirus sweeps the US, businesses, universities and cities such as New York and San Francisco have introduced vaccine mandates to boost uptake of jabs. But vaccine hesitancy remains high and a cottage industry for bogus inoculation cards has emerged to help people get around the rules. Fakes have been sold on platforms from eBay to Whatsapp and there have been high profile busts, with warnings that counterfeiters and buyers could face jail. Yet users, authorities and many others
A bar manager checks paperwork
Some New York businesses are concerned they could be held liable if someone is found on their premises with a fake card. are sceptical that the use of false cards can be stopped. Counterfeiters appear to be doing brisk business. Last week, customs officials in Memphis, Tennessee and Anchorage, Alaska seized 6,000 false vaccination cards
in separate shipments from China destined for recipients across the US. They were printed with the CDC logo and closely resembled the genuine cards given to US citizens when they get vaccinated. However, when officials looked closer they noticed spelling mistakes and poor printing quality. At the same time, more people who are using false documents are getting caught. Recently, a Miami couple was arrested for allegedly trying to enter Hawaii using fake cards in breach of the state's travel laws, which require proof of vaccination or a negative test result to avoid quarantine.
Enzo Dalmazzo, 43, and Daniela Dalmazzo, 31, who travelled with their two children, are facing $8,000 (£5,000) in fines - although the maximum penalty could have been jail. The flourishing market has prompted warnings from the FBI that unauthorised use of a government agency's seal is a crime and violators could face fines or up to five years in prison. Chuck Schumer, the Democratic Senate majority leader, has called for a federal crackdown and national education campaign to stop counterfeiting. Why, he also asked, were people risking prosecution to get fake vaccine cards when jabs are free and plentiful in the US? Stacey, who works at another busy Greenwich Village bar, says friends of hers are thinking of buying fake cards because they do not want to get jabbed over fears about vaccine safety. Resistance to jabs and vaccine mandates is fierce in some parts of the US, where only 60% of the adult population is fully vaccinated, and typically driven by online disinformation and calls to protect civil liberties. Stacey, who is vaccinated, says her friends think vaccine mandates could stop them doing everyday things if they become more common, and so fake documentation will offer a workaround. But she adds: "It's worrisome in terms of public health. If they are choosing to come in with a fake vaccination card they are putting themselves at risk to people who are doing the same thing." Bogus cards are easily available on social media, messaging apps and the dark web where they can be bought for anywhere between $25 (£18) and $500, according to reports. On Instagram accounts often promote fake cards alongside images featuring anti-vaccination slogans or disinformation about vaccine safety. Instagram shut down accounts the BBC reported but others remain on its site. Anyone buying, selling, or trading in fake, or genuine, medical documents on its platforms will be barred, the company said. "We'll continue to identify and remove this content whenever we find it, and will disable accounts, pages or groups that repeatedly break our rules," a spokeswoman told

‘Do not lose your friends from your life’: Barbara Walters "Make the effort to stay in touch with them beyond Facebook. Treat them with compassion and warm heartedness," she added Speaking at Yale, TV presenter Barbara Walters gave a thoughtful speech. “When you walk out of here and everybody, every friend, every family member says, ‘What are you going to do? What are you going to do?’ Just tell them you haven’t yet found your bliss. I did finally find my bliss and I have had a professionally blessed life. As you learned I’ve interviewed every US president and first lady since Abraham Lincoln. The terrible thing is, is that there are some of you out there who really believe that,” she said. “Look around. Look at the people next to you, the people behind you. The people you say may be the most important take away of your years here. The friends that you have made here at Yale may be the best experience you could have. They will continue to be a part of your life long after you may, heaven forbid, forget the name of your professor and even whatever he taught you. I have little family. I have one daughter. My friends are my family and your friends have been the steady part of your growing experience here at Yale. Treasure them. Make the effort to stay in touch with them beyond Facebook. Treat them with compassion and warm heartedness. Do not lose your friends from your life,” she stated further.
Shraddha Kapoor's all-red bridal look
Shraddha Kapoor’s impeccable ethnic choices have been consistently impressive. She stuns in lehengas, elevates them with her charm. The actor recently turned muse for fashion designer duo Falguni and Shane Peacock at the ongoing India Couture Week 2021. Shraddha looked ravishing in the crimson lehenga as she completed the look with bridal jewellery, complete with a matha patti and a statement neckpiece. Having said that, one must also applaud the designers’ creation. The intricate working in the ensemble, the cuts were unbelievable. This was teamed with a tulle dupatta which was embroidered at the hem. Sharing the pictures, they wrote, “Our muse and showstopper @shraddhakapoor made a sight to behold in a bespoke bridal red Lehenga.”
