Day of hope as Covid-19 Turkey’s purchase of S-400 defense system vaccine rolls out in US will endanger US military: Mike Pompeo Americans across the country roll up their sleeves to get vaccinated

Principal Deputy Spokesperson, State Department Cale Brown said that Pompeo has “made it clear” to Foreign Minister Cavusoglu that “Turkey’s purchase of the S-400 system endangers the security of US personnel and military technology and allows Russian access to the Turkish armed forces and defence industry.” HiIndia Newsdesk

Moderna vaccine moves closer to US approval

HiIndia Newsdesk A second coronavirus vaccine is nearing emergency approval in the US after it was endorsed by a panel of experts. The he ad of t he Fo o d and Dr ug Administration (FDA) said his agency would move quickly to authorise the Moderna vaccine, allowing the company to begin shipping millions of doses. It comes days after the US began its largest ever immunisation campaign with the rollout of the Pfizer/BioNTech jab.

Hack of government agencies and companies poses 'grave risk'

HiIndia Newsdesk US officials have warned that a sophisticated hacking campaign uncovered this week poses a "grave risk" to the government, critical infrastructure and the private sector. The US Treasury and commerce departments were among those attacked. The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (Cisa) said thwarting the attack would be "highly complex and challenging". Many suspect the Russian government is responsible. It has denied the claims. The actor behind the hacks "demonstrated patience, operational security, and complex tradecraft in these intrusions", it said.

Ankara’s purchase of the Russian S-400 air defence system endangers the security of US personnel, warns US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, said the State Department on Thursday. “Secretary of State Michael R. Deb Haaland: Historic Native American 'pick for Biden cabinet'

HiIndia Newsdesk President-elect Joe Biden will nominate a Native American to serve as his interior secretary, leading the agency governing public lands, US media say.

If confirmed, Congresswoman Deb Haaland will be the first indigenous person to lead the department, which also plays a key role in Native American affairs. She will also be the first Native American in a cabinet secretary role. Native rights groups and progressive Democrats had pushed for the New Mexico lawmaker's nomination in recent weeks. "It would be an honour to move the BidenHarris climate agenda forward, help repair the government to government relationship with Tribes that the Trump Administration has ruined, and serve as the first Native American cabinet secretary in our nation's history," Ms Haaland said in a statement quoted in the New York Times. Ms Haaland, 60, is a member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe and made history as one of the first two Native American women ever elected to Congress in 2018.

Trump trade chief wants WTO leadership race reopened

HiIndia Newsdesk The US has suggested that the process to find a new Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) needs to be reopened, in what would be an unprecedented move. Donald Trump's trade chief Robert Lighthizer told the BBC on Wednesday that the WTO needs "someone with real experience in trade". The doubling down on the rejection of Ms OkonjoIweala, despite widespread support from other countries, escalates one of the most pressing global trade issues Joe Biden will have to solve as US President.

United States on our NATO Ally Turkey for its procurement of the Russian-made S-400 missile defence system, as required under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA),” said Principal Deputy Spokesperson, State Department Cale Brown. Brown said that Pompeo has “made it clear” to Foreign Minister Cavusoglu that “Turkey’s purchase of the S-400 system endangers the security of US personnel and military technology and allows Russian access to the Turkish armed forces and defence industry.” “The Secretary stressed that the goal of the sanctions is to prevent Russia from receiving substantial revenue, access, and influence, and they are not intended to undermine the military capabilities or combat readiness of Turkey or any other US Ally or partner,” Brown added. This comes after the United States on Monday (local time) imposed sanctions on Turkey for purchase of S-400 surface-to-air missile system from Russia and urged Ankara to resolve the problem “immediately in coordination with the US”.

U.S. to blacklist dozens of Chinese firms including SMIC, sources say

HiIndia Newsdesk The United States is set to add dozens of Chinese companies, including the country’s top chipmaker SMIC, to a trade blacklist on Friday, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday. The move, which has not previously been reported, is seen as the latest in President Donald Trump’s effort to cement his tough-on-China legacy. It comes just weeks before Democratic President-elect Joe Biden is set to take office on January 20. In total, the United States is expected to add around 80 additional companies and affiliates to the so-called entity list, nearly all of them Chinese. The designations by the Commerce Department are expected to name some Chinese companies that Washington says have ties to the Chinese military, including some helping it construct and militarize artificial islands in the South China Sea, as well as some involved in alleged human rights violations, the sources said. The Trump administration has often used the entity list – which now includes more than 275 China-based firms and affiliates – to hit key Chinese industries. These include telecoms equipment giants Huawei Technologies Co and 150 affiliates, and ZTE Corp over sanction violations, as well as surveillance camera maker Hikvision over suppression of China’s Uighur minority. SMIC, the Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp, has already been in Washington’s crosshairs.

HiIndia Newsdesk Gorakhpur: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday claimed that while a vaccine against Covid-19 was just about a month away, the infectious virus had already been contained in the state. “We are about a month away from the Covid-19 vaccine and the state has already contained the pandemic. Developed countries like the US registered a Covid-19 death rate of about eight per cent, but Uttar Pradesh only saw 1.04 per cent of Covid-19 deaths,” Yogi Adityanath said. PAYING MORE THAN $14 MILLION; POLICE ARREST 50 PERSONS

MORE THAN 4,500 AMERICANS FELL FOR IT, AND OFFICIALS ESTIMATE THAT MORE THAN $14 MILLION WAS TRANSFERRED OVER TWO YEARS Hi India News Desk

P

olice in New Delhi say they have arrested more than 50 people over a call centre scheme that lured victims into thinking their assets were being frozen as part of an elaborate drug investigation and would then transfer money to avoid going to jail. According to authorities, scammers in the plot would telephone people and tell them that their assets and bank accounts were being seized after officers from multiple US law enforcement agencies found their bank account details at crime scenes involving drug cartels in Mexico and Colombia.

More than 4,500 Americans fell for it, New Delhi police said Wednesday, and officials estimate that more than $14 million was transferred over two years. Investigators said the victims would be given a choice: Either face arrest or choose an “alternative dispute resolution” option that would allow them to avoid facing the law. “They were asked to buy Bitcoins or Google gift cards worth all the money in their accounts,” said Anyesh Roy, a police officer in New Delhi. The money was then transferred to what the victims were told was “a safe government wallet” but that actually belonged to the scammers.

Call centres are part of India’s expansive outsourcing industry, which generates about $28 billion in annual revenue and employs roughly 1.2 million people. At the same time, the country has emerged as a hot spot for online fraud in which perpetrators are rarely punished. Cases have become so common in recent years that Indian authorities have dedicated special units to dealing with the problem. In August, police in the Delhi suburb of Gurgaon raided a call centre and arrested more than two dozen people suspected of being involved in cheating more than 30,000 Americans by positing malware onto their computers and then offering to

773.526.8353 MIDWEST / EASTCOAST fix them for a price. The call centre employees sent countless links to pornographic websites to people across the United States, police said. When the links were clicked, the users’ computer systems would be bugged. The scammers would then direct the users to buy iTunes gift cards or charge them up to $700 each to debug the computers, according to police. Authorities have carried out raids across India and arrested hundreds of people, from boiler rooms in New Delhi, a hub of the global call centre industry, to the suburbs of Mumbai, where cons impersonating IRS officials have demanded payments to cover back taxes. When police arrived at the call centre in West Delhi on Wednesday, they said, they soon realised that it was one of the biggest operations they had seen in recent months. The scammers were trained to speak with American accents and told to read from a vetted script, police said. One officer investigating the case said that those involved were adept at making people quickly succumb to their demands and were rewarded with extra cash. Investigators said that the leader of the call centre, an Indian man based in Dubai had also been involved in a similar previous case but had fled the United Arab Emirates before he could be detained. They said that he had paid those working at the call centre $400 to $500 a month and that many of his employees were teenagers. Rakshit Tandon, a cybersecurity expert, said that Indian scammers hardly worked in isolation and that in each case investigators typically found a sleeper partner, either in the country where the victims live or in places where data can be leaked from other parts of the world. As India plunges into an economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Tandon said it was likely that more call centre crimes will be reported in the coming months, with a huge surge in unemployment and few jobs for educated young people. “We have trained and cheap manpower available,” he said. “Employees know they are cheating, but they still do it for extra money.”

For many Sikh Americans, India’s new farm laws hit close to home By Staff Writer

W

hen Aasees Kaur was growing up, she often saw bounties of wheat, cauliflower and tomatoes on her family’s farm in Amritsar, a city in the Indian state of Punjab, where her Sikh family has been farming on the same land for nearly two centuries. She now lives in Cincinnati, but she still has many relatives there whose main source of income is agriculture. So when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government enacted three laws in September to deregulate the sector, scrapping guaranteed minimum prices for key crops and removing the government as the middleman between farmers and distributors, she joined her family abroad in protest. Kaur, 25, worked with local Sikh activists to organize a car rally this

month in Cincinnati, which, despite below-freezing temperatures, drew nearly 1,000 people. “Farming is everything we are,” said Kaur, a community services manager with the Sikh Coalition, the largest Sikh civil rights organization in the U.S. “It’s afforded us an education and opened up a world full of opportunities. If we were to stay on the sidelines now, that’d just feel so wrong.” Mirroring protesters in India, where hundreds of thousands of farmers have marched to the capital, New Delhi, young Sikh American activists in more than a dozen states have been leading socially distant car caravans to raise awareness about the strife of farmworkers — many of whom are their relatives and friends. The Sikh diaspora has been at the forefront of the December demonstrations, because many members trace

their roots to Punjab, India’s bread basket, and were farmers themselves before they immigrated to the U.S. An estimated 2,000 Sikh Americans protested India’s new farm policies in Washington on Sunday. Courtesy Sim J. Singh Harshwinder Kaur, 26, a law student, helped coordinate a weekend caravan in Denver that brought out

more than 250 vehicles. She said organizers routed the march past local news stations to catch reporters’ attention. Like many Sikh Americans her age, Kaur has cousins in Punjab who depend on farming to survive and have been protesting since September. Under the new laws, they could lose their lands to agribusiness corporations.

Sikh activist and Silicon Valley entrepreneur Sukhi Chahal worried about marginal Khalistani elements hijacking parts of peaceful farmers’ protest in India By Mayank Chhaya Special to Hi India

S

ukhi Chahal, a Silicon Valleybased IT entrepreneur and prominent Sikh activist, has said that the ongoing farmers’ protest out of Punjab and elsewhere in India is vulnerable to being “hijacked” by remnants of the separatist Khalistani movement. Chahal, who is based in San Jose but was recently visiting New Delhi as part of his regular business trip, has generated considerable interest in his long-held view that the remnants of the now defunct Khalistan movement operating out of the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, which he described in Hindi as “Dukandari” (Running it like a shop), have been trying to foment trouble. However, he insisted that these radicalized elements in California have no popular support within the diaspora Sikh community which rejected the separatist movement a long time ago. Chahal says, “This is a very serious issue for the Sikh community because their activity is against Sikhi (Sikh philosophy) and also against the principles of Sikhism.” Chahal spoke in an interview from Delhi in which he explained the dangers of the farmers’ movement not being vigilant to the machinations of these marginal elements. Chahal made a distinction between the Khalistan movement of yore and now, implying the latter is a ragtag affair but with the kind of social media savvy which often gives it the appearance

Chahal seemed to reject that narrative and broadened the debate saying these elements were motivated by commercial considerations and receiving funding. “I am 100 percent sure that they (Khalistani sympathizers) will never come back to Punjab. They have nothing to do with Punjab. Even the people of Punjab have discarded the Khalistan movement.” He said they will not be able to win even village level elections in Punjab.

of having great consequence. “Whatever you see now, the Khalistan movement, referendum 2020 or referendum 2021 or Sikhs for Justice, this is purely a commercial interest of some people and basically it is a ‘dukandari.’ I have no issue with their dukandari. They can do their dukandari but unfortunately this is a very serious issue for the Sikh community because their activity is against Sikhi and against the principles of Sikhism,” he said. Chahal insisted that such groups do not have “too much following” within the Sikh diaspora “but the kind of narrative they have been successful at creating is very dangerous.” Chahal said such elements were trying to divide the Hindu and Sikh communities. “They create hate through social media, they issue threat and try to suppress anybody, especially the moderates, who try to ask legitimate questions,” he said. To illustrate his point that these Khalistani elements have no support within the Sikh community in America, he said “they cannot even one Gurudwara’s election but they are very successful occupying some prominent Gurudwaras forcefully.” During his trip to India Chahal’s pronouncements about how these Khalistani elements out of America and elsewhere may be trying to inject themselves into the farmers’ protest using their considerable financial and social media resources made headlines on television. They reinforced a limited but vocal public opinion among those critical of the farmers’ movement against controversial agricultural reform by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an offshoot of the so-called Khalistan movement. At the same time though Chahal said he was worried about “the kind of radicalization they are doing to the youth, especially those who are coming to America or Canada.” “They fall prey to these people and that is very dangerous,” he added. Chahal clarified that even though their base is very narrow within the diaspora Sikh community in America and elsewhere, they are very effective at using social media. “They are able to promote their propaganda very well,” he said, adding that many of young Sikh men they target were not even born in 1984 when Sikhs in Delhi were massacred in the aftermath of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination which itself followed the storming of the Golden Temple. This fact, in Chahal’s view, was being used by these Khalistani elements to mislead young Sikh men. Explaining how the Khalistani elements are able to leverage their message despite their small numbers, Chahal cited the example of a recent protest rally outside the Indian consulate in San Francisco which involved up to 10,000 cars and trucks. However according to him, members of the Sikhs for Justice managed to leverage it in their favor by

17

Silicon Valley entrepreneur and Sikh activist Sukhi Chahal says Khalistani elements in America and elsewhere are trying to destroy the peaceful farmers’ movement by trying to directly and indirectly interfere in it. putting up a stage near the consulate and project as if it was their rally which was not the case. “They tried to build the narrative that that was their protest,” he said. Chahal said these elements have a history of showing up at major legitimate rallies in small numbers and putting up their Khalistan flags to project as if they have a massive support which is not the case. “I want to ask these Khalistani people if they are able to put together even 500 people anywhere in America or Canada. They will not be because most of the people do not like them but they try to capture the readymade platform wherever they see. Some of these people are so shameless that they don’t care what Sikh philosophy is or whether it would be disrespect the gurus or the Guru Granth Sahab,” Chahal said. He added that they often promote violence. On the question of whether the Indian farmers’ protest there was any serious intrusion by these elements by funding it, Chahal said as an American citizen he would not like to comment on the peaceful movement in India. “I don’t want to give any kind of message whether I support or oppose. This is a protest by farmers and they have a very good leadership. The movement is peaceful but these so-called Khalistanis, they are trying to hijack that movement,” he said. These Khalistani sympathizers have offered one million dollars for the support of the farmers’ movement in India and have in the process muddied the waters even as it has become politically fraught. Chahal said they were trying to destroy the peaceful farmers’ movement by trying to directly and indirectly interfere in it. Vocal sections in India who support Prime Minister Modi personally and his government’s agricultural reforms generally have latched on to such antics by these Khalistani elements to tar the entire peaceful protest. Chahal was particularly forceful about the silence of these Khalistani elements over what he called were serious human rights violations of the minorities in Pakistan, including Sikhs and Hindus, as well as kidnapping of young Sikh girls, forcing them into marriage “and even selling them Hira Mandi and other areas (of Pakistan).”

The actor has worked in more than 500 films and has performed a list of varied on-screen performances to his name. “Nobody in my family had seen ten thousand rupees before I became an actor and started earning. My father was a forest clerk whose monthly salary was just rupees 90. However, 12 years ago, I wanted to become a TV tycoon and have a studio of my own. I was in debt when two publishing houses approached me. When I started recording my autobiography, I realized that I was able to talk about the failures of my life and laugh at them. I found my life interestingly funny. So, I got the idea of staging my failures. There have been more than 400 shows of my play”, says the Saraansh actor who has won a two National Film Awards and eight Filmfare Awards “I have tried to tell people through my book that we have always been taught by our families to be humble and not to talk of our strengths, but if you yourself don’t acknowledge and appreciate your strengths, how will the world appreciate you?”, says the actor, talking about his book The Best Thing About You Is You, has been translated into more than forty languages. “When you laugh at your failures and weaknesses, people have nothing to intimidate you. This made me fearless. Describing my failures is through what I have earned the most”, the actor says, adding that his autobiographical plays have given him strength throughout..

hen she had signed her first Aanand L Rai-directed venture earlier this year, Sara Ali Khan didn't have the faintest idea that she would be shooting for Atrangi Re in such unusual circumstances. Two schedules and a lockdown later, the actor is glad to report to the shoot of the Akshay Kumar and Dhanush starrer. "I won't deny that it's difficult to be on [the floors] now. But eventually, I was relieved to return to the sets [after a break]. Maintaining social distance, wearing masks and adhering to [safety protocols] have changed the way we function, but the passion is the same," says Khan, who kicked off the third schedule in Mumbai last week. Rai had just begun the first leg of shooting in Varanasi in March when the team had to call time on the project due to the pandemic-induced lockdown. The unit finally reunited in October for a stint in Chennai. "Now, the last and the longest schedule is left," she adds.

After the lockdown disrupted shoot schedules, Sara Ali Khan kicks off the third stint of Akshay Kumar-Dhanush starrer Atrangi Re in Mumbai.

How do you look back at 2020?

It’s been special due to what the fans have given me. They connected with me, and that’s important. You can call it timing or good luck, but whatever came out in 2020 is what I did in the last few years. It’s a blessing that everything worked. With all that flow of love, I went into Zidd. It was a tough film. I’m calling Zidd a payback for all the love that I received.

All your projects this year were different. Do you feel satisfied with your work?

I will never be satisfied. As an artiste, one needs to have that fire to experience different characters and different stories. For me, this is just the beginning. I’m waiting to get more challenging parts. An actor needs to win everyone’s trust. If fans trust me, that’s great. But does the industry trust me? I’m putting my best foot forward.

Sonu Sood is continuing his humanitarian efforts amid the Covid-19 crisis. In his latest initiative, the actor has gifted e-rickshaws to those who lost their source of income due to the pandemic and the lockdown that disrupted the global economy. The initiative is called ‘Khud Kamaao Ghar Chalaao.’ In a recently released statement, Sonu shared, “I have received a lot of love from people over the past few months. And that has motivated me to continue being there for them. So, I have launched the ‘Khud kamaao ghar chalaao’ initiative. I believe providing job opportunities is more important than distributing supplies. I’m sure that this initiative will help them stand on their feet yet again by making them self-reliant and self-sufficient.” Sonu Sood first grabbed headlines when he helped migrants working in big cities get home to their villages and towns after the government ordered a nationwide lockdown due to the coronavirus. He provided transport and succour to them. Recently, Sonu mortgaged his own property in Mumbai to raise Rs 10 crore to help the needy.

Jamie Alexander to return for Thor

Rakhi Sawant: I will be funny and aggressive on Bigg Boss 14

What brings back Rakhi Sawant on Bigg Boss? It is my show. I kickstarted the first season, and all these years, my soul has been attached to it. I have seen so many people take home the trophy, and some were not even deserving. I am thankful to God that he gave me a second chance. This is my next innings on the show to prove myself. How much has the show changed during these years? There are a lot of changes. All of us were just kids, and had no clue about the reality show back then. We didn’t know where the cameras were placed, or how should one project themselves. Now, we understand how the show works and how important it is to stand for yourself. However, to be honest, the creatives are really smart, and twists things against you all the time. So you never know how things pan out.

Jodhpur court on Monday sought stands of filmmaker Prakash Jha and actor Bobby Deol on a plea taking offence to the controversial portrayal of Hindu saints in their recently released web series Aashram. In the MX Player web series, Deol has played the central role akin to some self-styled godmen convicted and serving jail terms for various penal offences in different parts of the country, including Jodhpur in Rajasthan. Issuing notices to Prakash Jha and Bobby Deol, Jodhpur District and Session Judge Ravindra Joshi listed the matter for hearing on January 11. The petition against the web series Aashram, resembling the name of a convicted godman, was filed by local resident Khush Khandelwal. “The portrayal of Deol as a Hindu saint has hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus, who respect and worship saints. His portrayal as a rapist, corrupt and drug dealer has diminished the place saints hold for Hindus,” Khandelwal contended in his petition. Khandelwal had earlier complained to the police, seeking registration of an FIR against the duo, but with the police refusing to lodge any case over his complaint, he had moved the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate with the same plea. A social media campaign had also been launched, terming the series a malicious portrayal of Hindu religious culture and ‘ashrams’.

Sania Mirza: Shocking to know that one Pankaj Tripathi joins Akshay person dies of TB every minute in India Kumar in Bachchan Pandey MTV Nishedh Alone Together, featuring Sania Mirza, Priya Chauhan, Syed Raza Ahmed, Himika Bose and Akshay Nalawade, deals with the apathy around tuberculosis in India and stresses on the importance of proper medication and treatment.

What made you associate with MTV Nishedh? The cause is the hero here, and that’s what prompted me to come on-board. When I was approached for the series, I was excited about my digital debut but what really intrigued me is the subject that it is trying to highlight. Honestly, I didn’t have in-depth knowledge about TB, but when I read about it and the current situation in the country, I realised that this needed urgent attention. It is absolutely shocking to know that one person dies of TB every minute in India. If my voice can influence perception

and make people more alarmed, there are no second thoughts in doing what I can to the best of my ability.

Do you think a show like Nishedh can make a difference? It definitely does. The first edition touched upon some important issues like modern contraception, sex, TB etc. Now with a focused approach towards tuberculosis, in this digital edition, we’re bringing to light some of the issues that are not addressed publicly owing to societal stigma around it. More importantly, it is the youth that we are catering to.

Actor Pankaj Tripathi has joined the cast of Akshay KumarKriti Sanon starrer Bachchan Pandey, the makers announced on Monday. Pankaj Tripathi, who was seen this year in the second season of Amazon Prime Video series Mirzapur, and films like Ludo and Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, will begin shooting for Bachchan Pandey in 2021. A spokesperson from the production house confirmed that the actor will join the cast, including Kriti Sanon, Jacqueline Fernandez and Arshad Warsi, for a schedule in Jaisalmer from January. The action-comedy will see Akshay Kumar play the titular role of a gangster, who aspires to be an actor. Farhad Samji, best known for Housefull 4, will direct Bachchan Pandey. Speaking to media on Wednesday, Paine said that Green will be playing as an all-rounder and would bowl more than four overs in a spell which was the limit set for him due to workload management. Green got hit on the head during a warm-up tie against the touring Indians last Friday and had to be substituted due to concussion. His test on Tuesday, however, yielded positive results.

Floyd Mayweather, Laila Ali, elected to Boxing Hall Never saw Lionel Messi as of Fame rival: Cristiano Ronaldo

HiIndia Newsdesk They defined the ‘El Clasico’ rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona for the past decade but Cristiano Ronaldo said he has always got on well with Lionel Messi and never saw him as a rival. Ronaldo, now playing for Juventus, scored two penalties to help the Italian champions secure a 3-0 win over Messi’s Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday. It was the first meeting between Ronaldo and Messi since the Portuguese forward left Real Madrid for Juventus in 2018. Between them the pair have won the Ballon d’Or in 11 of the past 12 years.

Do not fall in bounce trap: India ready for trial by twilight Kapil Dev The legend also believes that the Australia pacers have the edge in the Test series as they have better knowledge of the home conditions

HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk The “40-50 minutes” during the twilight period will be critical for India in the Day-Night pink-ball Test against Australia that begins in Adelaide on Thursday, feels Ajinkya Rahane. “Definitely, it’s a challenge. The ball behaves differently once the lights are on than what it does during the day. So as a batsman, I think focus will be the key. A batsman’s concentration and communication between two batsmen will be crucial. Batting during the twilight period, those 40-50 minutes, will be very important.

HiIndia Newsdesk Floyd Mayweather, who captured 11 world titles in five weight divisions and retired unbeaten, former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, and Laila Ali have been elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum. Formal wear

doesn’t have to mean boring

W

hen we think of formal wear, one of the first few things that come to mind is a basic white shirt and a pair of black pants. But, if your fashionista-self is just not willing to settle for the basics, then you are at the right place! Today, we have some super chic formal looks of celebrities that will help you amp up your style quotient instantly. Let’s be honest, as long as formal wear is tailored to perfection, we are good to go. If you are looking for a simple option with a bit of drama, then take a cue from Nushrratt Bharuccha’s look. We like how she opted for an unusual coloured pantsuit and gave it an interesting spin with classic cold shoulder cut. She completed the look with a half knot bun and golden earrings. Red can make everything look better, and when it is a red outfit with statement sleeves you are bound to make a fashion splash. We love this option worn by Sara Ali Khan, who was styled by celebrity stylist Ami Patel. On days you want to keep it simple, go for stripes — a print that has stood the test of time. And as expected, Samantha Akkineni killed it in this striped pantsuit! Make sure you incorporate these cues whether you are working from home or heading to work because clothes affect work output and productivity.

Indian travellers now keen to book places from where they can work remotely, survey reveals

Try this simple Ayurvedic quick-fix for relief

Ananya Panday does backbend with a block Now that people have the freedom to work from wherever they want, 2021 could witness a significant rise in travellers looking to take longer trips that combine work and leisure

ndian travellers are second after Thailand, where 69 per cent of office goers felt the same. Travel platforms and places will prioritize showcasing home-office necessities and Wi-Fi speed, in an attempt to attract this new wave of digital nomads. Likewise, the world of corporate travel will see increasing demand for privacy, cleanliness and longer stays among those travelling for business, requiring alternative accommodations to up their ‘work-friendly’ game, the survey mentioned. “Remote working is becoming a long-term reality, as health and safety is a top priority in the current environment. To break the monotony of working from home, travellers want to escape to a destination where they can easily blend leisure with business. In response to this trend, Booking.com has introduced a work-friendly programme which offers work-friendly alternative accommodations like homes and apartments for both business and leisure travellers looking to work remotely. In order to make it easier for travellers looking to extend their holiday and find what they are looking for, Booking.com has also updated its search experience, including filters for customers looking for private, whole home accommodations. We are also committed to providing flexibility around cancellation policies for travellers, to cater to their travel demands amid uncertainty,” Ritu Mehrotra, Country Manager, India, Sri Lanka and Maldives at Booking.com, said.

Ananya Panday seems to be really pushing her fitness levels and we recently got proof on social media. In an Instagram post shared by Anshuka Yoga, known to be frequented by many Bollywood celebs, the 22-yearold actor is seen doing the Bridge yoga pose with a block supporting her back. “Blocks are truly your best friend when you’re trying to understand alignment and get deeper into postures. advanced practitioners find blocks useful to explore the asana anatomy or use them for deep relaxation,” mentioned Anshuka Yoga alongside the post. lame it on the nip in the air or pollutants, nasal congestion — when the nose becomes inflamed and stuffy mostly due to a cold, flu or sinus — is commonly-experienced by a lot of people in the winter months. While it usually subsides on its own, it can be extremely uncomfortable until it lasts. But, instead of relying on temporary measures and OTC medicines, look out for Ayurveda-based solutions, suggested ayurvedic practitioner Dr Dixa Bhavsar.

Ingredients for steam inhalation 500 ml – Water 2 tbsp – Carom seeds 4-5 – Tulsi leaves 1 tsp – Turmeric Handful – Mint leaves

Method

Boil the water. Add all the ingredients. Boil again for 10-20 minutes.

How to use it?

Once the ingredients have mixed with boiling water, take it off the stove and inhale the steam for 10 minutes. “Do it at least two-three times a day, and you’ll see your nasal congestion disappearing real soon,” said Dr Bhavsar. In addition, you can strain and drink the water after inhaling steam, she added.

benefits of regular exercise Even 5 to 10 minutes of vigorous exercise or 15 minutes of moderate exercise every day can lower the risk of death from any cause

773.526.8353

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2020

"Exercise increases energy levels and increases serotonin in the brain, which leads to improved mental clarity," says Atkinson, director of program development for Cooper Ventures, a division of the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas. You may live longer Studies link even 5 to 10 minutes of vigorous exercise or 15 minutes of moderate exercise every day can lower the risk of death from any cause.

Enhanced cognitive function

Exercise improves focus and attention, as well as motor reaction time.

Good for your mood

Exercise can lift your mood by decreasing symptoms of anxiety and depression by washing your brain with mood-enhancing neurochemicals.

Protection for your heart

The heart is a muscle. Exercises help the heart become more efficient and better able to pump blood throughout the body.

Better sleep

A workout during the day can help you to get better sleep. Exercises also increase time spent in deeper stages of sleep, allowing for more restorative sleep.

Stronger bones

Exercise helps keep the bones strong by increasing bone mineral density levels.

Mobility boost

Exercise boosts your ability to do everyday tasks, walking, climbing stairs, carrying groceries, lifting luggage overhead, moving a couch or playing with your children.

Weight loss

This is one subject that does not need elaboration. But remember to lose weight one needs calorie deficit: you have to eat fewer calories than you burn.

Lower risk of cancer

The American Cancer Society says that physical activity is linked to a lower risk of 13 types of cancer, including the colon, breast, endometrial and liver.

Reduced risk of diabetes

Regular exercise is linked with a 26 percent reduction in the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, says an October 2016 analysis in Diabetologia.

How a Sedentary Lifestyle During COVID-19 Can Quickly Affect Your Health * Recent studies show that people in the United States are sitting a lot more than they did before the COVID-19 pandemic. * Experts say this sedentary lifestyle can lead to health issues such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. * They note that a lack of movement can have a quicker and more profound effect on older adults. * They say that even a short amount of physical exercise every day can help.

The danger of too little activity Sitting too much — as many of us are during lockdown at our computers or on our couches — is associated with increased risks for weight gain, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and premature death, to name a few. “It definitely takes less time for an unhealthy lifestyle to take hold than an active, healthy one,” Yoon said. “Once you get into a routine of not doing much, you can start feeling the effects right away,” he said. “Muscle breakdown can start in as little as 24 hours, and aches and pains start to creep in.” That sedentary behavior can also lead to increased back pain, which can make it less likely that a person will become active.

Older people are more vulnerable

Age would play a very important factor,” Mikhael noted. “Older people tend to decondition much quicker, and it might take someone as short as 2 weeks with a totally sedentary life to show major physiological and metabolic changes.” One study in The Journals of Gerontology: Series A looked at overweight, prediabetic older adults who cut their number of steps in half for a week. They were slower than their younger counterparts in recovering muscle loss and glycemic control after returning to their previous daily steps for 2 weeks.

A little activity goes a long way

“If you have a functional workspace, sitting anywhere for prolonged periods of time isn’t

good for your spine. Try to stand up, stretch, and walk around every 30 minutes,” said Dr. Mona Zall, DO, a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician at Cedars-Sinai KerlanJobe Institute in Los Angeles. “If your work requires you to be present on a computer for several hours a day, consider breaking this time up,” she said. “Walking around the block (if you’re able to maintain adequate social distancing standards) or continue performing other exercises that can be nourishing to your spine and your mental health.” “Get out of bed at a fixed time in the morning and get dressed for the day, rather than sitting around in your pajamas, “Studies have shown that putting your pajamas back on at night and having a fixed bedtime schedule can help you get a full, restful night’s sleep. “Build time into your schedule for regular exercise and activities. Maintaining some semblance of a schedule, even in a quarantine or lockdown situation, is essential for avoiding a sedentary lifestyle and its negative effects.” “Core-focused exercises like planks are also strengthening for spinal muscles. Always remember to use the correct form with any activity you do, and if exercising is new to you, check with your doctor before you begin “Our bodies are intricately designed to move efficiently and often,” said Dr. Neel Anand, a professor of orthopedic surgery and director of spine trauma at Cedars-Sinai Spine Center in Los Angeles.

Confused by all the conflicting nutrition advice out there? These simple tips can show you how to plan, enjoy, and stick to a healthy diet. Eating a healthy diet is not about strict limitations, staying unrealistically thin, or depriving yourself of the foods you love. Rather, it’s about feeling great, having more energy, improving your health, and boosting your mood.

The fundamentals of healthy eating

Protein gives you the energy to get up and go—and keep going—while also supporting mood and cognitive function. Fat. Not all fat is the same. While bad fats can wreck your diet and increase your risk of certain diseases, good fats protect your brain and heart. Fiber. Eating foods high in dietary fiber (grains, fruit, vegetables, nuts, and beans) can help you stay regular and lower your risk for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Calcium. As well as leading to osteoporosis, not getting enough calcium in your diet can also contribute to anxiety, depression, and sleep difficulties. Carbohydrates are one of your body’s main sources of energy. But most should come from complex, unrefined carbs

(vegetables, whole grains, fruit) rather than sugars and refined carbs.

Setting yourself up for success

Prepare more of your own meals. Make the right changes. Read the labels. Focus on how you feel after eating. * Drink plenty of water

* * * *

Moderation: important to any healthy diet * Try not to think of certain foods as “off-limits * Think smaller portions * Take your time. * Eat with others whenever possible * Limit snack foods in the home * Control emotional eating

ll the Lucky Ali fans out there are in for a treat. The singer, who has given us gems like O Sanam and Gori Teri Aankhain, among many others, held the Internet's attention once again and for all the right reasons. The 62-year-old singer surprised his fans in Goa with an impromptu gig, which the Internet can't get enough of. The video of Lucky Ali's gig was shared by veteran actress Nafisa Ali Sodhi. Sharing the video on her Instagram profile, the actress simply captioned the post: "Lucky Ali live and impromptu at Arambol. At Garden of Dreams." Samsung’s massive 4K 110-inch Micro LED TV

@hiindia

/hiindiaNews

S

amsung has unveiled its latest 110-inch Micro LED TV in Korea which will be available globally from the first quarter of next year. It is a 4K HDR TV with self-emissive LED display technology, which is said to offer bright and vivid picture quality. Here is everything you should know about the massive TV

Samsung’s new 4K 110-inch Micro LED TV will feature a Micro AI processor made New design of inorganic materials which will optimize the picture quality in real-time

Samsung had released its first MicroLed Samsung had released its first MicroLed Television, “The Wall” in 2018 which had a modular design. Samsung’s latest MicroLed Television is prefabricated unlike its predecessor, which allows the installation and calibration of the Television to be streamlined and offers connectivity and smart functionality as the brand’s other televisions. Jonghee Han, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics spoke about the Television and said “As consumers rely on their televisions for more functions than ever, we are incredibly excited to bring the 110” MicroLED to the commercial market.Features The Television will feature a Micro AI processor made of inorganic materials which will optimise

the picture quality in real-time. The MicroLEDs used, will offer a lifespan of up to 100,000 hours of viewing (around 274 years), which is much more than other OLED screen technology available today in the market. The self-illuminating technology used in the Television can display 100% of the DCI and Adobe RGB color gamut and is said to accurately deliver wide color gamut images taken with high-end cameras. The Television features an impressive 99.99% screen-to-body ratio, which is sure to offer an immersive experience. The television will also offer consumers the option to use the MultiView feature to comfortably watch up to four sources of content at the same time using the split-screen functionality. The TV includes an embedded Majestic Sound System that delivers 5.1 channel sound, and also an Object Tracking Sound Pro feature which will identify objects moving objects on the screen, and projects the sound to follow the action.

Pricing

There is no word on the pricing of the device, but Samsung has confirmed that the TV will be globally available early next year. However, in Korea, it has been launched at KRW 170 million which translates to Rs 1.15 crore.

Smartphone usage rises dramatically in 2020, users worried about mental health

While many users report that lockdowns and work from home has resulted in more time being spent with family members, the average time spent on smartphones continues to rise.

G

oogle Drive mobile apps have received new features, which will help you search media quickly and efficiently. The company has rolled out the features for both Android and iOS. Google Drive users will now be able to see and re-run recent desktop and mobile searches. This feature could be useful and help save time as now you don’t need to type in the same searches over and over. The second feature that Google has added is ‘intelligent suggestions.’ Users can now view and select from ‘intelligent suggestions’ whenever they type in the search bar. You will see suggestions for people, past searches, and keywords, as well as recently accessed files. Google has explained why these type of small changes are important. “With changes in working patterns due to COVID-19, more people need to get work done even when they’re away from their desk. Finding files quickly and easily on your phone helps ensure you can still share, review, collaborate and create, wherever you are, Google said in a blog post. The search giant has already started rolling out the features for eligible users. If you haven’t yet received the feature, you should get it in a few days. Users are advised to download the latest version of Google Driver to use the newly added features. Google has also noted in the blog that ‘Web and App Activity’ must also be enabled, which will help offer a better experience in general. Once you enable it, all your activities on Google sites and apps will get synced and offer you results in a better way. Lastly, the new features are available to Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus, as well as G Suite Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education, and nonprofits customers.

The COVID-19 pandemic has tightened the grip smartphones exercise on users, and this is starting to have a negative impact on the mental and physical health of users, with a majority worrying about their smartphone addiction. That’s the key finding of a study conducted by Vivo and Cyber Media Research titled ‘Smartphones and their impact on human relationships 2020’.

One major finding of the study was that since 2019 there has been a major jump in the daily hour usage of smartphones per user. “There is nearly a 39 per cent increase in smartphone usage from 2019. Last year, the duration in hours was at 4.5 hours, and this has increased to nearly 7 hours now,” Marya pointed out. “We saw that office work has increased by 75 per cent, calling by 63 per cent, OTT by 59 per cent, video consumption by 56 per cent, social media usage by 55 per cent and gaming around 45 per cent. Of course, maximum is driven due to work from home, which has seen a 75 per cent jump,” The smartphone is also the first device that users check within 15 minutes of waking, according to 88 per cent of those surveyed. This statistic has also seen a major jump from last year, when it was at 52 per cent . Worryingly, 73 per cent of the users said they feel isolated when they are without their smartphones, which is another big jump from 39 per cent in 2019.

Apple CEO says majority of staff will continue to work from home until June 2021

Apple CEO Tim Cook said it “seems likely” that the majority of teams won’t be back before June 2021.

A

pple Inc. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook shared new details on the company’s plan to return to the office during a virtual town hall meeting with employees. Cook said it “seems likely” that the majority of teams won’t be back before June 2021. The Cupertino, California-based technology giant has historically had an office-centric culture, but the CEO implied that the company’s success this year during the pandemic lockdown could enable more flexibility to work remotely in the future. Still, Cook has been adamant publicly about his desire for staff to ultimately return to the office. “There’s no replacement for face-to-face collaboration, but we have also learned a great deal about how we can get our work done outside of the office without sacrificing productivity or results,” he told staff, according to people familiar with the comments. “All of these learnings are important. When we’re on the other side of this pandemic, we will preserve everything that is great about Apple while incorporating the best of our transformations this year.” Cook added that because of the challenges of recent months, Apple will be giving employees in many regions an additional paid holiday scheduled for Jan 4.
