They will discard their clothes to become one with nature and start carrying a dandi (stick) and kamandal (reliquary). “Over 3,000 sadhus had applied to become Nagas but we have selected 1,000 after watching their behaviour closely for three years,” Sri Mahant Mahesh Puri, international secretary of the Sri Panch Dashnam Juna Akhara, told reporters in Haridwar on Wednesday. Ordinary sadhus can be awarded the Naga status by their akharas (monasteries) only during a Kumbh, an occasion that occurs once in three years. Such anointment is one of the highlights of a Kumbh. HiIndia Newsdesk People of Indian origin and Indian diaspora having overseas citizens of India (OCI) card are now not required to carry their old, expired passports for travel to India, as required earlier, according to a statement. “The requirement of carrying old and new passports, along with the OCI card, has been done away with,” the Indian embassy said on its website on Monday, referring to a notification issued in this regard b y t h e C e nt r e , addressing one of the major concerns of overseas Indians. “Henceforth, an OCI cardholder travelling on the strength of an existing OCI card bearing old passport nu m b e r i s n o t required to carr y the old passport. Howe ver, carr ying the new (current) passport is mandatory,” the embassy said. According to the embassy, the Indian government has also decided to grant further extension of time till December 31, 2021, to get the OCI cards re-issued for those below the age of 20 years and above 50 years. As per the current OCI guidelines that have been in force since 2005, an OCI card is required to be re-issued each time a new passport is acquired by the cardholder up to the age of 20 years or after completing 50 years of age.

The recently-released action-packed film ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ is proving to be a major force to reckon with at the Indian box office. The film, which hit the big screens on last Wednesday, has registered a good first extended weekend. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the film has raked in Rs 28.96 crores during its opening weekend. At the Glamour 2018 Women of the Year Summit, actress Lili Reinhart spoke of the toxic culture regarding body image and body shaming. She spoke about how she empowered herself to accept and be the way she is, without struggling to be of a particular shape or size. “From a young age, we are unknowingly being trained by magazines, market ing and a l l forms of media into thinking that having cellulite, or not wearing makeup is worthy of being publicly shamed… We are told to be insecure about certain things. We are conditioned to feel ashamed or embarrassed about certain parts of ourselves,” Reinhart said, mentioning how the society won’t change easily and that it isn’t possible to depend on outside marketing sources for this either. She added that the best way is to change it ourselves by “showing what’s real with no filters and certainly with no shame”.

It took Sen Gupta about nine months to finish the manuscript. By the time the book came out, people had taken to the streets to uphold the democratic ethos of the Constitution. In hindsight, Sen Gupta wishes she had done a segment on citizenship. Perhaps, that will be grist for another book.

Her books on Indian history often have Subhadra Sen Gupta’s email address in them for children to be able to reach her with their queries. A new book usually means a deluge of emails, flush with questions. “The smart ones try to make me write the projects for them. The mail starts with a paragraph of profuse praise and then a quick list of questions starting with, ‘Do you know anything about…?’ They have been trying to con me for years,” says the Delhi-based writer, with a laugh. Yet, over the course of the last few years, the letters, and the queries that have come up during school visits for author interactions, have spoken of something else. “I meet children at schools, where I talk less and listen more. In the last five years, I have sensed a confusion about history, and, also, human values. They are taught something in school, and, in some cases, are exposed to very different ideas at home. After reading my book, A Children’s History of India (Rupa, 2015), one girl wrote to protest at my calling (Mughal emperor) Akbar ‘Great’. She was convinced that he raped Hindu women,” she says. In another instance, Sen Gupta recalls a student asking her what Jawaharlal Nehru had done for the nation. “As the history of independent India is not taught in school, they know little of Nehru’s achievements or his role in the writing of the Constitution,” she says. Long before the nationwide protests broke out over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the proposed National Register of Citizens, Sen Gupta had begun work on a book that she hoped would dispel this confusion that she’d sensed — an accessible children’s version of the Indian Constitution, a book fundamental to the idea of the country’s composite identity.

In ancient Rome, distances were actually measured by counting steps. In fact, the word “mile” was derived from the Latin phrase mila passum, which means 1,000 paces – about 2,000 steps. It’s suggested the average person walks about 100 steps per minute – which would mean it would take a little under 30 minutes for the average person to walk a mile. So in order for someone to reach the 10,000 step goal, they would need to walk between four and five miles a day (around two hours of activity). But while some research has shown health benefits at 10,000 steps, recent research from Har vard Medical School has shown that, on average, approximately 4,400 steps a day is enough to significantly lower the risk of death in women. This was when compared to only walking around 2,700 steps daily. The more steps people walked, the lower their risk of dying was, before levelling off at around 7,500 steps a day. No additional benefits were seen with more steps. Although it’s uncertain whether similar results would be seen in men, it’s one example of how moving a little bit more daily can improve health and lower risk of death. While the World Health Organization recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity per week (or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity), research also shows that even low-intensity exercise can improve your health – though moderate-intensity exercise improves it to a greater extent. This means your steps throughout the day can contribute to your 150 minutes of target activity. Activity can also help mitigate the harms of sitting down for long periods of time. Thai burglar falls asleep while Tanzania: 45 people died in robbing, woken up by cops stampede to see ex-president’s body

HiIndia Newsdesk Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in coordination with Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has expedited restoration works at the historic Katora Houz near Golconda, with hyacinth being cleared from the tank within a few weeks. The works on cleaning the Katora Houz commenced on March 7 with the cleaning of the tank and accordingly, JCBs were deployed for the purpose. While the GHMC is looking after cleaning the tank, HMDA has provided the necessary machinery required for clearing the weed and hyacinth from the tank. The civic body has earlier allocated funds for the restoration works. Though Telangana State Tourism Development Corporation had planned to turn the historic tank into a tourist attraction, the civic body later took the responsibility.

Against the target of Rs 1,900 crore, the civic body has collected a property tax of Rs 1,647.86 crore till 9 pm on Wednesaday through citizen service centres, municipal circle offices, bill collectors, Meeseva and online. According to GHMC officials, out of the 16 lakh plus property tax assessees in the GHMC jurisdiction, 12.11 lakh property owners have paid the tax by March 31. During the previous financial year, property tax collection was Rs 1,357.12 crore.

After announcing his retirement from New Zealand cricket last year, the 30-year-old southpaw will continue to play after he signed a three-year contract with Major League Cricket in the United States. He has taken up coaching ventures at the cricket academies that come under the auspices of Major League Cricket. It was a good fortune for the Chicago youth to interact and learn from him at this coaching camp organized by CYCA.

Speaking exclusively to hiINDiA, Corey said, “The USA does not have a proper cricketing system at this time. It is like I am part of a startup company and looking for a pathway for cricket. I enjoy being part of the whole process. The USA is a massive country and it is very hard to get everyone involved as a collective measure.
