Trump extends pandemic-related visa ban through March 31
HiIndia Newsdesk President Donald Trump on Thursday extended pandemic-related bans on issuing green cards and work visas to large groups of applicants outside the United States through March 31. Federal judges limited the impact but the bans, however short-lived, significantly tightened legal immigration, a goal that had eluded Trump before the coronavirus struck. They had been set to expire Thursday. Trump said the measures would protect American jobs in a pandemic-wracked economy, while business groups said they would hamper a recovery. An extension is consistent with Trump’s hardline stance on immigration and passes on the decision over when and whether to lift the bans to President-elect Joe Biden, who takes office Jan. 20.
SolarWinds hackers accessed Microsoft source code, the company says HiIndia Newsdesk
Convicted murderer Samuel Little, who confessed to strangling 93 people and was considered by the FBI to be the most prolific serial killer in US history, died on Wednesday at a California hospital, the state corrections department said. He was 80. Little had been serving three consecutive sentences of life without parole for the killing of three women in Los Angeles County during the late 1980s, murders to which he was linked through DNA that matched samples found at the crime scenes.
Kamala Harris gets vaccine on TV
US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris has received the first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine live on television as part of efforts to build public trust in the inoculation and urged Americans to get vaccinated for the virus. Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff were administered the vaccine at United Medical Center in Washington, DC. "Let's do it," Harris said before she received her shot on Tuesday. She took the vaccine one week after President-elect Joe Biden received his. Describing the process as 'relatively painless', Harris urged all Americans to get vaccinated. 'It's about saving your life, the life of your family members, and the life of your community,' she said. "I trust scientists. And it is the scientists who created and approved this vaccine. So I urge everyone, when it is your turn, get vaccinated." Harris joins a growing number of elected officials and doctors who have received their coronavirus vaccines on camera to show Americans that the shots are safe.
The hacking group behind the SolarWinds compromise was able to break into Microsoft Corp and access some of its source code, Microsoft said on Thursday. In a blog post, Microsoft said its investigation had turned up irregularities with a “small number of internal accounts” and that one of the accounts “had been used to view source code in a number of source code repositories. “The disclosure adds to the ever-growing picture of the compromises associated with the SolarWinds hack, which used the Texas-based company’s flagship networ SolarWinds SolarWinds k monitoring software as a springboard to break into the sensitive U.S. government networks and other tech companies.
US warships transit Taiwan Strait, China denounces ‘provocation’
HiIndia Newsdesk Two US warships sailed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait on Thursday drawing protest from Beijing, the second such mission this month and coming almost two weeks after a Chinese aircraft carrier group used the same waterway. China, which claims democratically run Taiwan as its own territory, has been angered by stepped-up US support for the island, including arms sales and sailing warships through the Taiwan Strait, further souring Beijing-Washington relations. The US Navy said the guided-missile destroyers USS John S. McCain and USS Curtis Wilbur had “conducted a routine Taiwan Strait transit Dec. 31 in accordance with international law”. “The ships’ transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the US commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The United States military will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows,” the US navy said. This is the 13th sailing through the strait by the US Navy this year. China’s Defence Ministry denounced the trip as “provocation” and “a show of force”, adding Chinese ships and aircraft trailed the US ships. The passage of the ships sent the wrong message to supporters of Taiwan independence and are a serious threat to peace and stability, it added.
McConnell thwarts Trump bid for $2,000 coronavirus economic relief checks
HiIndia Newsdesk US Senate leader Mitch McConnell dealt a likely death blow on Wednesday to President Donald Trump’s bid to boost coronavirus aid to Americans, declining to schedule a swift Senate vote on a bill to raise relief checks to $2,000 from $600. McConnell said on the Senate floor that a bill passed by the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives, which sought to meet fellow Republican Trump’s demands for bigger checks, “has no realistic path to quickly pass the Senate.” McConnell, who controls the Senate’s agenda and opposes the increase in aid, had introduced a competing bill combining the $2,000 checks with provisions unacceptable to Democrats, who could block it. With a new Congress set to be sworn in on Sunday, the action appears all but certain to kill the effort to increase the amount of the $600 checks Congress has already approved. Appearing to shrug off Trump’s own initiative, McConnell continued: “The Senate is not going to be bullied into rushing out more borrowed money into the hands of Democrats’ rich friends who don’t need the help.”

HiIndia Newsdesk Medical officers and other health staff tasked with vaccinating people against Covid-19 will on Saturday conduct a “dry run” in state capitals across India to bolster preparedness and identify the challenges the planned immunisation campaign might encounter. The Union health ministry said on Thursday that the dry run — designed to test all the major steps in the vaccination process except inviting beneficiaries and actual vaccination — will be conducted in at least three sites in each state capital. The medical officers designated for the exercise in each capital will identify 25 healthcare workers as mock beneficiaries at each site and upload their details into CoWin, an application software designed for the Covid-19 vaccination campaign. Some states have decided to include districts located in difficult terrain with poor logistical support, while Kerala and Maharashtra have announced plans to schedule the dry run in several additional cities along with their capitals. The health ministry has asked the states to ensure enough space, logistical arrangements, Internet connectivity and electricity and ensure that each site has a “three-room setup” with a separate entry and exit.

they remained firm in their demands amid a deadlock with the government over two issues. Hundreds of police personnel have been deployed at Singhu, Ghazipur and Tikri border points, where the farmers have been camping since November 26, even as the minimum temperature dipped to 1.1 degrees Celsius. The Samkyukt Kisan Morcha, according to news agency, is likely to meet during the day to discuss its next course of action. Senior farmers’ leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni has said there is, however, no question of withdrawing from the two issues which are a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP) and repealing of the farm laws

India bounced back in style to register an eight-wicket win against Australia on the fourth day of the second Test match at the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground, chasing down the fourth innings target of 70 runs. Debutant Shubman Gill stayed unbeaten on 35 while captain Ajinkya Rahane completed the job he started in the first innings with a century as he blunted the Aussie attack with a signature unbeaten 27 and deservingly scored the winning runs. HiIndia Newsdesk US President Donald Trump has signed into law a massive USD 2.3 trillion spending bill that includes a USD 900 billion coronavirus relief package, averting a government shutdown and extending coronavirus aid to millions suffering from the economic impact of the pandemic. The Canada-India Foundation had conferred the award on Bhatia at its virtual gala here on Sunday. Bhatia said, "On Sunday evening I watched my pre-recorded acceptance speech and the show for the first time like many. The past 24 hours were supposed to be a celebration for all those little girls in Rajasthan but it has been far from that. I was made privy at this point to a lot of new information...I even visited the CIF (Canada India Foundation) offices to understand their exact stance on many issues." He said, "I stay away from politics to be honest. But I am a proud Sikh. And that is first and foremost. As a result, my heart cannot accept this award at this time. The suit claimed that Mitra improperly received USD 1.5 million from the sale and had the potential of earning USD 10 million more in royalties from what the university said could be a billion-dollar drug. Other defendants included companies that were party to the sale and the company marketing the drug known as Cequa. In a statement issued on Monday, the university said it had resolved its claims regarding “Mitra's interest in the patents confidentially and to its satisfaction.”

Diaspora Engagement and Services are an Important Cornersstone of the Consulate’s Work: C G Amit Kumar HI INDIA NEWS DESK CHICAGO, IL- The year 2020 undoubtedly has been a most unusual year. Within weeks, COVID-19 pandemic upended the way we work and live. It severely impacted travel and global trade leaving no country unaffected. In the US mid-West region, there are close to 500,000 people of Indian origin by conservative estimates. Some put this figure at well over 600,000. The Consulate has adapted and responded well to the COVID-19 challenges in delivering service while adhering to the spirit of our procedural requirements for various services. To illustrate, we are issuing life certificates to seniors after receiving necessary documents by post and conducting personal interview through video conferencing. I believe that moving forward, this should become the norm. Indeed, officials of the Consulate, with a view to improve our services, regularly review guidelines and procedures as well as track suggestions and feedback received. international flights into India were prohibited around third week of March 2020 to contain the spread of COVID-19. Consequently, several hundreds of Indians were stranded here at that time. The Consulate proactively reached out to them and provided support on several fronts. This would not have been possible without the active support of the Indian-American community organizations. Since 10 April, travel to India began under the Vande Bharat Mission and has since gradually seen higher frequency of flights. More than 40,000 people have travelled to India from Chicago in over 150 VBM flights so far. Today, Air India and United Airlines operate a dozen flights weekly from Chicago to destinations in India. All visa categories have been restored for travel except tourist and e-visas. Visas for emergency travel are issued promptly, sometimes even on weekends or public holidays. Our volume for consular, passport and OCI-related work is
already back to pre-COVID-19 levels at times exceeding it. The 24×7 helplines set up in wake of COVID-19 are still continuing although with reduced hours. After registering over 6500 calls in May, currently, the Consulate is handling close to 2400 calls per month.
Consul General of Chicago Amit Kumar
We have extensively used our website, social media platforms and group emails to inform the diaspora about important policy changes. In addition, we have held numerous
virtual interactions with the community organizations including virtual consular camps on regular basis. Separately, we have held weekly classes / workshops on pranayam, meditation and yoga and Indian classical dance and music through our Facebook page. We have also navigated the change in outsourced services provider from M/s CKGS Ltd. to M/s VFS Global in early-November. There were a few teething problems initially, which have since been mostly resolved. The Consulate is in close touch with M/s VFS Global to ensure good service. Many people also ask us as to why over-the-counter services have still not resumed? This is an important COVID19-related measure to ensure safety of both the applicants and our Consulate officials. Ours is a small team and any case of COVID-19 will have an outsize impact on Consulate’s ability to render services. To conclude, the Consulate would like to reaffirm its commitment to ensure smooth expeditious service to the Indian diaspora and citizens. I take this opportunity to wish everyone that the New Year 2021 brings in joy, peace, harmony and good health.

Rajinikanth, after much dithering, Tuesday announced he would not take the political plunge, citing his ill health. Addressing reporters in Chennai, Murthy said people should respect Rajinikanth’s decision and support him in this situation. “All of you know that Rajinikanth wanted to serve the people of Tamil Nadu without any expectation. He had grand plans; worked hard for it, he is in severe distress because he wasn’t able to execute his plans due to his ill health. We should all help and support him in his decision to listen to the doctor’s advice. We should see this situation for him like we would view our family members’,” he said. Murthy, who has served as the head of Tamil Nadu BJP’s Intellectual wing, said PM Narendra Modi and Rajinikanth “are like his two eyes, as both want to work for the people of Tamil Nadu”. On BJP’s announcement that Arjuna Murthy was welcome back into their party, he said everyone knows he shares a good rapport with the BJP and has done a lot of welfare activities when he was in the saffron party.

Millions of Americans moved during the pandemic — and most aren’t looking back By Staff Writer

mericans fled big cities in droves to escape the coronavirus pandemic — and many of them are staying, permanently or indefinitely. But escape means something different depending on whom you ask. The top destination cities as of October and November were Sacramento, California; Las Vegas; Phoenix; Austin, Texas; and Atlanta, according to the real estate site Redfin. Interest is particularly high for Austin, where double the number of people moved this year compared to last year. The main driver is that people want more space, prompting higher sales of luxury, suburban and rural homes, said Daryl Fairweather, chief economist at Redfin. “It’s a K-shaped recovery. Wealthy people are doing well, and more affluent people are more able to work remotely,” Fairweather said. Buyers are seeking more affordable homes and yard space for their families, home offices for parents, designated areas for remote learning

Buyers are using virtual 3D home tours, sending in agents to tour houses by video, and buying homes sight unseen to avoid repeated trips and higher risk of exposure, Fairweather said. Some South and Southwestern states, which had fewer lockdown restrictions, added people fleeing more restrictive counties and states for both economic and ideological reasons. Jehna Powell, 23, a bartender and gym employee, recently moved from Eaton, Colorado, to Pensacola Beach,

Some people fleeing major cities said they were afraid of dying from Covid-19 and burdening their partners with housing costs they wouldn’t be able to bear on their own. Amber Parker of Atascadero, California, had to make a decision when her husband lost his income. He was a head coach for a basketball team at a junior college, and the school decided not to risk playing sports this year. “We realized if either of us were to die or lose our jobs, the other could

The pandemic and remote working arrangements have opened up new opportunities for people to try out living in new areas without having to leave their old jobs or save up a lot of money. Abigail Jaffe, 28, who works in public relations for tech companies, moved from New York City to Austin in August. Her roommate left their shared apartment to move back with her parents and work remotely, which meant Jaffe had to decide whether to find a new roommate during the pandemic, and all that entails, or move. “I had wanted to move to Austin for a while but always thought that I’d have to quit my job first,” she said. Instead, the pandemic gave her a chance to pursue her dream. “It’s so much better. I pay the same amount for a one-bedroom now that I was paying to split a two-bedroom in New York City,” Jaffe wrote in an online message. She also got a car and a dog, both of which could have been a challenge in her previous location. Susan Wachter, a professor of real estate and finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, said the pandemic has fast-tracked long-term demographic shifts. The pandemic accelerated population loss in some urban centers and pushed a move toward suburban and rural areas, Wachter said. And now, unlike earlier in the pandemic, people are making long-term moves, not just temporary relocations, to escape Covid-19 or its effects on their quality of life. Before the pandemic, workers and families grappled with a terrible choice when deciding where to live. “You could commute several hours or pay inordinate housing costs,” Wachter said. “Now, you can avoid both.”People who left cities may return if their offices allow it or require one to two days a week of in-person engagement, but many could resettle farther out from cities to take advantage of the lower cost of living, the higher quality of life and more access to nature and outdoor activities. But younger workers and those fresh out of school will still flock to cities, drawn by relatively discounted rents, the chance to meet new people and get critical face time and the opportunity to develop skills to nurture their careers. “The new generation will choose cities — as before,” Wachter said. OTT must duck formula trap: Pankaj Tripathi His comment, coming at the end of a year that saw the Hindi film industry embroiled in a debate about nepotism
Amit Sadh thanks Sonu Sood ‘This goodness is not something that i just activated’
“Bollywood, in my personal opinion, is a very democratic space… I could never have believed that an actor who looks like me could have played the protagonist in a Hindi film, like I do in Kaagaz, my upcoming film. This was not possible 10-15 years ago. On a film set everyone, from the hero to the lightman and makeup artist, they are all equal,” said actor Pankaj Tripathi. His comment, coming at the end of a year that saw the Hindi film industry embroiled in a debate about
nepotism, was made at the Express eAdda on Monday, where the actor was in conversation with national features editor Devyani Onial and the Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta. Tripathi, who has had a stellar year, with widely appreciated performances in the films Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, and Ludo, and in web series Mirzapur and Criminal Justice, spoke on a range of topics, including his early days as a struggler in Mumbai, his motivation for pursuing acting, and the current state of the Hindi film industry. When asked which “school of acting’ he thinks he belongs to, Tripathi, 44, who won a Special Mention at the National Film Awards for his performance in the film Newton (2017), fondly remembered his late colleague Irrfan, who passed away earlier this year. “I have not seen a lot of films, and I have almost zero reference of older actors. My training school was the National School of Drama, from where people like Pankaj Kapur and Naseeruddin Shah came. Irrfan sahab left a huge impression on me though I don’t know if I hail from his school of acting. But if I came to be associated with his school, that would be a huge honour for me. Mujhe unse bada prem thha (I was very fond of him),” he said. Tripathi has also established a small-screen presence with web shows like Sacred Games and Mirzapur. At the eAdda, he addressed what he described as the “formula trap” that OTT platforms can fall into, an example of which is the spate of similar gangster stories that are streaming on different platforms.
Irrfan Khan’s The Song of Scorpions gears up for release
Amit Sadh remembered how it was Sonu Sood who gave him his first break, while also promoting the latter's new book titled I Am No Messiah. Actor Amit Sadh has called Sonu Sood an “amazing person” who is “always ready to help”. Remembering how it was Sood who gave him his first break, Sadh wrote a note of gratitude for him on Twitter, while also promoting the former’s new book titled I Am No Messiah. Sadh tweeted, “Not many know that my first break was given to me by Sonu bhai. It’s because of him where I am today. This goodness that he is doing now that people are talking about is not something that is just activated. I think he has been doing this from many many years.” He further wrote, “So proud of you Sonu bhai and you are teaching us a way to give back! Many congratulations @ SonuSood on your book #IAmNoMessiah. Quoting Amit Sadh’s tweet, Sonu Sood replied, “Bhai you were born to rule. You wrote your own destiny. I was just fortunate enough to be a catalyst in your amazing journey. So proud of you my brother. Keep adding feathers to your cap.” To this Amit said, “Sonu bhai.. thankyou for your words … they mean so much to me … and I will work harder to make you prouder… And Thankyou for leading the right way and for all the inspiration .. hope we meet soon !! Lots of love.”
Get ready to witness Irrfan Khan on the big screen one last time with The Song of Scorpions. Written and directed by Anup Singh, the film, which is a “story of twisted love, revenge and the redemptive power of a song”, also stars Golshifteh Farahani, Waheeda Rehman and Shashank Arora. The Song of Scorpions will be released in early 2021 by Panorama Spotlight along with 70 MM Talkies. Though The Song of Scorpions is not the final project Irrfan shot for, it will indeed be the last film of his career to see the light of day. The Song of Scorpions premiered at Switzerland’s 70th Locarno Film Festival in August 2017.

Alia Bhatt film Gangubai Kathiawadi Sonam Kapoor starrer
Alia Bhatt-starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi has landed in a legal soup. A case has been filed against Alia, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and writer Hussain Zaidi by Kathiawadi’s adopted son Babuji Rawji Shah. The petition further stated that it infringes upon Babuji Rawji Shah’s right to ‘privacy, liberty and self-respect’. Shah has stated that he is being constantly ridiculed by the members of his locality ever since the first poster of the movie was released.

I wasn’t ready: Asim Riaz on not being a part of Bigg Boss 14 Model and actor Asim Riaz has revealed the reason he did not return for the ongoing fourteenth season of Bigg Boss. He said that while he was offered by the makers, he realised he did not want to go back. While speaking to Bollywood Bubble, Asim said, “Yes, I was offered. But the thing is that I have to spend 140 days in the house. It was a long time. For me, at that time I had just recovered and it leaves an impact on your head that you just remember something and it’s like ‘I don’t want to go back’.” Asim added, “This is not the right time for me to go. I thought I have just recovered and doing good in my life. If I get a chance I will go. But at that time when I was offered, I wasn’t ready to be very honest.”
It’s exhausting to be fearless: Swastika Mukherjee
Wonder Woman 1984 release
Bengali actor Swastika Mukherjee says she has braved through several highs and lows in her career to stay independent and fearless. Mukherjee said she has followed her instincts and not trends to navigate her career without compromises. “It’s tiring, it’s exhausting to be fearless. There were years when I did really less work, because I didn’t want to do the other kind of work. If I wanted to do mediocre work, I could be shooting everyday. I started doing so much of women-centric films, where I wasn’t working with so called ‘heroes’ and still making a mark. There came a time when heroes didn’t want to do films with me.” “I was already a mother and there were a lot of people in the industry, mostly men, they would tell me, ‘Don’t tell people you have a child’ because it’s difficult for a woman to become a heroine if people know you’re a mother. That it’s important for men to fantasise heroines, otherwise you won’t be successful as a star.”
Gal Gadot’s superhero movie Wonder Woman 1984 has finally hit Indian screens. A sequel to the 2017 smash hit Wonder Woman, WW84 is the ninth film in the DC Extended Universe. The Patty Jenkins directorial has already impressed several critics, and now it remains to be seen if it has the same effect on the audience. We have already seen the trailers of Wonder Woman 1984, so we do know that Robin Wright’s mentor character and Chris Pine’s affable Steve are making a return. But how Jenkins is resurrecting them will be interesting to see since the duo were killed off in the original movie. New additions to the Wonder Woman world include Pedro Pascal’s flamboyant baddie Maxwell Lord and Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah aka Barbara Minerva.
Disney’s Soul:
A lovely, timely metaphysical movie
‘What is your life’s mission?’ This is a simplyworded question that is so loaded. We often wonder about this, or are frequently asked about it by well-wishers. The purpose of life. Some find it, and some figure it out along the way. Soul is a Disney-Pixar movie that is based on that one-line question. Directed and cowritten by acclaimed filmmaker Pete Docter, Soul is a perfect New Year’s watch. And of course, it has to be said that the timing of the release is perfect too. We never thought our lives would be disrupted this way. The prevailing feeling remains one of dread, uncertainty and loss. And Soul probes these subjects with its gentle fingers, forcing us to look inside ourselves. It is a metaphysical movie that is absolutely lovely to look at. But what is more significant about the film is that it raises important questions about life and its meaning, without coming off as high-handed or preachy.

Do you need to shower daily? Many people tend to skip baths when not stepping out of the house. But is it a good idea to do so? Find out here
D
aily baths have always been associated with “cleanliness”. However, amid pandemic and the work from home schedule, the idea of taking daily baths is being widely discussed. Some people are even highlighting the benefits of taking fewer showers; but is it really wise to skip regular showers? Dr Yashodhara Sharma, unit head and senior consultant, dermatology, Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute said that while showering less can be an individual choice, it “certainly cannot be recommended”. “Needless to mention the benefits of a shower, it is almost a necessity; apart from removing dirt and dead skin, it rejuvenates skin, helps in blood circulation, fighting stress, and removing muscle tension. In short, it collectively even creates a condition of fast recovery from certain diseases,” said Dr Sharma. During work from home, it may seem futile to take bath daily as one is not stepping out, but it must be noted that even at home, one is not free from bacteria attack on the skin, said Dr Sharma. “Daily shower is very important to maintain the balance of good bacteria and other
microorganisms. Of course, bedridden patients and people with certain diseases are not recommended to take bath daily, but they are also advised to keep themselves and their surroundings clean in other ways,” she said.
Manage your bathing schedule
*It’s not merely about washing your skin. It is essential to also gently rub your skin to get rid of any dirt and dead skin. You can always consult a specialist for effective and suitable cleansing agents. Apply good quality body oil or moisturiser on the skin immediately after taking bath. *Keep yourself active for at least 30 minutes after taking bath instead of immediately sitting down to work. *Try to wash your hair after three days. *Cold water showers are good, but since it is winter you can use lukewarm water as per comfort. Avoid using extremely hot water as it can make your skin dry. Dr Gaurav Jain, consultant, internal medicine, Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital said it may depend upon individual cases but “generally we do encourage the ritual of daily bathing”. “Instead of dropping the idea of taking bath daily, it can be customised as per one’s health condition,” he said.
Kareena Kapoor Khan is a style icon in her own sense. Anything she wears is an instant trend and the diva even confessed that she trusts her sense of style more than anybody else! In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, the Begum of Bollywood talked about how she would style her closest group of friends if she turned stylist for a day! When asked about how she's style hubby, Saif Ali Khan, Bebo revealed that nobody can style him! "He will wear the opposite of what a stylist gives him to wear. He is inherently stylish and has impeccable taste," the actress said when it comes to clothes, books, interior decoration or even food! "I don't think anyone can style Saif, I think he doesn't need styling!"
50 calorie Hot Chocolate
There is no better time than now to enjoy hot chocolate. But it can be tricky if you are trying to fulfil your resolution of staying healthy and keeping fit this year and worry about putting on extra kilos. That is exactly why we are here with a special recipe which has only 50 calories, as we did not want you to miss out on this delicious cuppa during the festive season.
Ingredients
⅓ cup – Skimmed milk Sweetener of your choice Pinch of Salt ⅓ cup – Water 1.5 tbsp – Cocoa powder ¼ tsp – Instant coffee powder 1 tsp – cornstarch
Steps
In a thick pan set on low-medium heat, add 2 tbsp cocoa powder along with and then ¼ tsp of coffee powder. You can add a bit more of coffee powder if you like, as it is known to enhance the taste of the chocolate. Next, add 1 tsp cornstarch to make the mixture thick and mix all the dry ingredients. To this, add milk (almond or skimmed) and keep whisking slowly, ensuring there are no powder lumps. Now slowly add water. Don’t worry, you won’t taste the water as the cornstarch will thicken the mixture. Once it begins boiling, add a sweetener of your choice. Since you want it to be healthy, we suggest a sugar-free sweetener. Boil it for a minute while continuously stirring it and then turn off the heat.

No spinner has done that to me in my career: Steve Smith
ndia bounced back from their 8-wicket defeat in Adelaide to post a 8-wicket victory in the 2nd Test at the MCG on Tuesday, drawing the Test series level at 1-1. Missing star players, like their regular skipper Virat Kohli, and having suffered such a demoralizing defeat recently, India’s win at the MCG is being hailed as a ‘historic’ win. Commentator Sanjay Manjrekar said on air the win was ‘historic’ because it had come after a similarly historic defeat. Virat Kohli was one the first people to tweet his delight at the win. Australian batsman Steve Smith is one of the premier batsmen of his generation. He is used to dominating the opposition with his batting and was also recently named ICC’s Men’s Test Cricketer of the Decade. But things haven’t been going smoothly for Smith in the ongoing Test series against India. The Indian bowlers have dominated the proceedings against Smith with R Ashwin being the chief architect of his downfall. “I probably haven’t played Ashwin as well as I would’ve liked. I probably would’ve liked to have put him under a bit more pressure,” Smith told. “I’ve sort of let him dictate terms and that’s something I’ve probably never let any spinner do in my career. I’ve sort of taken it to them, been a bit more aggressive and made them change things,” he said. “It’s kind of a two-edged sword in a way, but I think I’ve just got to have the confidence to take it on and play my game,” Smith continued.
"Good People Finish First Too": Sourav Ganguly Credits Ajinkya Rahane For "Special" MCG Win precarious position as he smashed a century on a difficult Melbourne pitch. He has been garnering praise from all corners and former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has also words of praise for him. Gavaskar said that it is ‘heartening to thing see’ the way Australia legends are praising Rahane for his leadership skills. “You had to be around the Australian commentary boxes to understand the kind of admiration that was there for the way he (Rahane) lead the team amongst some of the Australian legends who were at the commentary box,” Gavaskar told. “So that was such a heartening thing to see that he was being praised for his leadership by these guys, someone like Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Mike Hussey, Shane Warne, they had nothing but praise for Rahane’s captaincy.”

In a statement, the league says there were 18 positives after 1,479 tests on players and club staff from Dec. 21-27. No individuals were identified but Manchester City had previously announced that striker Gabriel Jesus and defender Kyle Walker tested positive last week. Further positives cases at City led to Monday’s game at Everton being postponed. The previous highest number of coronavirus cases after weekly testing in the Premier League was 16 last month.
With Lionel Messi nursing his ankle in the stands, Barcelona fell further behind in the Spanish league on Tuesday after ceding its first-ever point to Eibar at Camp Nou. Front-runners Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid are seven points clear of Barcelona before they play matches on Wednesday.
“Being realistic, the league title is very complicated. Nothing is impossible, but we must recognize the gap,” Koeman said. “We were missing Leo, who is always decisive, but the sensation I have is ‘how is it possible we didn’t win?’ We created chances, missed a penalty, and gave away a goal that was their only shot on target.” Messi was forced to watch the game tucked in a winter coat with the reserves because of an unspecified right-ankle problem. It is not reported to be serious. Already without Ansu Fati and Gerard Pique because of serious injuries, Barcelona also lost midfielder Philippe Coutinho in the final minutes with what appeared to be a left knee injury.

Pilot Traces Giant Syringe In The Sky To Celebrate Arrival Of Covid Vaccine
A young German pilot said Sunday he traced a giant syringe in the sky as a way of marking the start of Germany's roll out of vaccines against the coronavirus. Samy Kramer, a 20-year-old amateur pilot, had carefully plotted out the route he needed to take in advance in order to create the effect in the skies above Baden-Wuerttemberg. The manoeuvres included a number of 90-degree turns during the flight on Wednesday that lasted one hour and 40 minutes and covered around 280 kilometres (170 miles). The syringe could be seen on the Flightradar website. "I wanted to give people food for thought for the day the vaccine became available," Kramer, a student, told AFP on Sunday. Germany launched its official Covid-19 vaccination campaign on Sunday, but the first jabs were actually given the day before, with a 101-year-old resident of an elderly care home becoming the first person in the country to be inoculated.

No One Like You Pappa
Tina Ambani In Post Remembering Dhirubhai Ambani
On Dhirubhai Ambani's birth anniversary, his daughter-in-law Tina Ambani shared a post remembering the late founder of the Reliance conglomerate. "There was, is and will be no one like you Pappa," wrote Tina Ambani, 63, in her Instagram post shared this morning. She also dug into the family album to share two priceless pictures. The first one shows her kneeling next to her father-in-law. The second one shows her husband and Dhirubhai Ambani's younger son, Anil Ambani, with his arm around his father. Remembering her father-in-law, who was born in 1932 in Gujarat and went on to become one of Indian's most successful businessmen, Tina Ambani wrote: "You brought out the best in each one of us and taught us how to broaden our horizons. "While we miss you immensely, you remain part of our being, guiding and watching over us, lighting our path and reminding us each day of the possibilities life holds."
Jugaad In The Time Of Coronavirus
Milk pipe and funnel
n a year defined by the new norm of social distancing, a milkman went viral for his jugaad to deliver milk with minimum contact. He was photographed using a delivery system put together with a pipe and funnel to deliver milk to a customer.
Hanger tripod
One chemistry teacher from Pune won hearts for her dedication when she crafted a makeshift tripod out of a hanger and two pieces of rope. The tripod held her phone and recorded her as she wrote on a blackboard, allowing her students a clear view of her work during online classes.
Refrigerator tray for online class How does a refrigerator tray come in handy during an online class? One teacher used the transparent tray to teach her students in a move that was praised for its creativity. She placed the tray on two containers, put her smartphone on top of it and was photographed solving a problem on a piece of paper kept on the table below. The innovative hack removed the need for her to hold her phone in one hand and also allowed students to view the problem as she solved it.
A photograph of two penguins appearing to comfort each other has won big at a photography contest. In a year that has produced many poignant and heartbreaking images, the photograph of the two penguins received an outpouring of love on social media and went massively viral earlier this year. It has now been picked as one of the winners in Oceanographic magazine's Ocean Photography Awards. The picture - which won the magazine's Community Choice Award - was taken by Tobias Baumgaertner in Australia's St Kilda Pier in Melbourne. He was told that the penguins had both lost their partners and regularly met to comfort each other. "These two fairy penguins poised upon a rock overlooking the Melbourne skyline were standing there for hours, flipper in flipper, watching the sparkling lights of the skyline and ocean," the German photographer wrote on Instagram in March.
WHY
Google Year In Search 2020: This Year, More Than Ever, The World Searched For...
Google has released this year's edition of its annual "Year In Search", which looks back at the most popular search terms and questions that people asked the search engine in the preceding 12 months. Google's Year In Search 2020 provides a glimpse into the questions, fears and anxieties that people had in a year marked by the coronavirus pandemic. "The most human trait, is to want to know why," begins the voiceover in Google's retrospective video, which has been viewed a whopping 10 crore times on YouTube. "And in a year that tested everyone around the world, 'why' was searched more than ever." In a year defined by the pandemic, it is not surprising that Covidrelated searches took the centre stage. One of the most-searched questions on Google: Why is it called Covid-19? Questions like, "Why Black lives matter" and "Why is Australia burning?" also highlighted important events and movements we saw in 2020. In India, the number of searches for Indian Premier League surpassed those for coronavirus. One of the top trends in India was "How to make paneer" - presumably thanks to the lockdown. Globally, a heartwarming search term cropped up. The world searched "how to help" more than ever.

Lungs go up in smoke
n India, seven per cent of cancers occur in the lungs. This is really a pity because, unlike other cancers about whose cause and effect we can only speculate, lung cancer shows a direct relationship with smoking. The risk increases if the person starts smoking at a young age. It also increases with the number of cigarettes smoked. It is not just cigarettes that cause cancer, tobacco used in any form such as beedis, cigars, pipes and even inhaled through a hookah carries a high risk. Burning tobacco releases a host of chemicals such as benzene and formaldehyde. These are responsible for initiating changes in the lungs that lead to cancer. The risk is aggravated by the paper in which the tobacco is rolled. Unfortunately, it is not the smoker alone who is at risk. Family members (spouse, children, parents) living in the same environment are also forced to become second-hand smokers. They inhale the cigarette smoke exhaled by the smoker. Even people who smoke outside the house bring in smoke on their clothes and skin. Although lung cancer can occur at any age, it usually manifests around the age of 65. Prolonged exposure to other pollutants such as diesel exhaust, smoke from wood fires and asbestos dust can be contributing factors in non-smokers. The symptoms of lung cancer can be obvious — such as a

AnAppleaDayKeeps the Doctor Away — Fact or Fiction?
Simple Morning Exercises to Make You Feel Great All Day
You likely know the familiar expression, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” While the phrase was first coined in 1913, it was based on a Pembrokeshire proverb that originated in 1866. In fact, Notes and Queries magazine was the first to publish the original quote: “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.”
Supports heart health Studies show that eating more apples could be associated with a lower risk of several chronic conditions, including heart disease In fact, one study in over 20,000 adults found that consuming higher amounts of white-fleshed fruits and vegetables, including apples, was linked to a lower risk of stroke. This may be due to the presence of flavonoids found in apples, which are compounds that have been shown to reduce inflammation and protect heart health. Apples are also loaded with soluble fiber, which may help reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels, both of which are risk factors for heart disease (9Trusted Source).
Contains cancer-fighting compounds
cough with blood-stained sputum without a fever. There may be breathlessness and rapid laboured breathing. There may be loss of weight and appetite. In some people, the cancer cells produce hormones that cause weight gain and swelling of the body. The face may be puffy and swollen. In short, any sudden rapid unexplained change in weight has to be taken seriously and investigated. These hormones can also push fluid to the fingertips, making them puffed out so that they have a parrot-beak appearance. The cancer can increase blood calcium levels, causing stomach discomfort and body aches and pains. There may be no chest pain at all, but there may be pain in the shoulder neck and arms. There may be loss of balance. Vision may be affected. One eyelid may droop. Anaemia may set in rapidly, causing fatigue. Blood clots may suddenly appear in various parts of the body. The presence of any of these symptoms should raise a red flag. Other diseases can also cause similar symptoms, so sometimes the diagnosis may be missed. If the person is a smoker or has had long-term exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke or industrial and other pollutants, investigations are required. Scans, X-rays and sputum examinations will usually give the diagnosis. Biopsies may be needed.
There are lots of studies that show if you do some exercise in the morning, you will be in a better mood all day long. You will have more energy and you will certainly be a better colleague, friend or partner.
Go for a Walk or a Run Highly nutritious
Apples are loaded with important nutrients, including fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. One medium apple provides the following nutrients (2Trusted Source): Calories: 95 Carbs: 25 grams Fiber: 4.5 grams Vitamin C: 9% of the Daily Value (DV) Copper: 5% of the DV Potassium: 4% of the DV Vitamin K: 3% of the DV In particular, vitamin C acts as an antioxidant to neutralize harmful compounds known as free radicals and protects against disease
Apples contain several compounds that may help prevent cancer formation, including antioxidants and flavonoids . According to one review of 41 studies, consuming a higher amount of apples was associated with a decreased risk of developing lung cancer. Another study observed similar findings, reporting that eating more apples was tied to a lower risk of colorectal cancer. Other research suggests that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables could protect against cancer of the stomach, colon, lungs, oral cavity, and esophagus. However, more research is needed to evaluate the potential anticancer effects of apples and determine whether other factors may be involved.
that eating apples could help reduce oxidative stress, prevent mental decline, and slow signs of aging. Protect against asthma. Studies show that an increased intake of apples may be linked to a lower risk of asthma. Reduce the risk of diabetes. According to one large review, eating one apple per day was tied to a 28% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, compared with not eating any apples at all.
Other health benefits
Potential downsides
Apples have also been linked to several other health benefits that could help keep the doctor away: Support weight loss. Due to their fiber content, apples have been shown to promote feelings of fullness, decrease calorie intake, and increase weight loss. Improve bone health. Human, animal, and test-tube studies have found that eating a higher amount of fruit could be associated with increased bone mineral density and a lower risk of osteoporosis.
Eating an apple every day is unlikely to harm your health. However, it’s possible to have too much of a good thing, and eating multiple apples each day may cause several adverse side effects. In particular, rapidly increasing your intake of fiber over a short period of time can cause symptoms like gas, bloating, and stomach pain. While this is not a problem for most people, those following a low carb or ketogenic diet may need to moderate their intake.
Promote brain function. Animal studies suggest
This is better done outside so that you can connect with nature but running inside on a treadmill is almost as good. You can time yourself and increase length and time according to your fitness program. Always have new goals to reach. Start with brisk walking and work up to running. At my age, I am still walking! The health benefits are considerable. You can build stronger bones and you can help to maintain your weight. Also, you are helping your heart to stay healthy and keeping your blood pressure low.
Jumping Jacks Michelle Obama is a great fan of this exercise and has become “Jumper in Chief.”[4] They are great for cardiovascular health and also for toning muscles especially the calves and the deltoids. Stand with feet together. Jump while spreading your arms and legs. Return to first position and keep going! You can start with doing these for 1 minute and then gradually build up to the number you are comfortable with.
Push Ups You start lying down (face down) but with your body held up at arm’s length. Your hands should be in line with your shoulders. Breathe in as you lower your body. That is fairly easy. Now, as you exhale, you have to get back up to the starting position. An easier version to start with is to bend your legs at the knees so you do not have to lift your whole body.
Lunges Stand with feet shoulder width apart. Place your hand on your hips. Take one giant step forward with the right leg. Make sure the knee does not go too far forward, that is, past your toes. The left knee will go down to almost floor level. Alternate the legs as you go on.

Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop P launched in India Xiaomi has just launched its Mi Robot Vacuum Mop-P in India and made it available via an open sale. The brand has also bundled a number of offers and deals for customers who purchase the Mi Robot Vacuum Mop-P. The Mi Robot VacuumMop P is a smart all-inone cleaning solution for homes. The cleaner features 2-in-1 sweeping and mopping functionalities. This is coupled with control via a smart app. It is powered by a quadcore Cortex-A7 processor and sports what the brand calls a Laser Distance Sensor (LDS) along with 12 multi-directional sensors. These let it find and eliminate dirt in every direction. Xiaomi claims the Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop P, its latest offering in the IoT space, is specially designed for Indian homes. Expanding its range of lifestyle products in the country, Xiaomi had also earlier launched other IoT products. These include beard trimmers, masks, an electric toothbrush, an air purifier and more. The new automatic Vacuum cleaner will help the brand further strengthen its foothold in the segment.
Now you can make Zoom calls using Amazon Echo devices
With the help of the Alexa app, Echo users have the option to create and name particular groups to make these calls. In the future, we may also see the group calling feature integrated into the Alexa app as well. Using this feature, users can simply give a command such as “Call my family” and it will automatically connect to the group the user has created. For now, there are no limits on the duration of calls while calling or receiving via Echo Group calling. However, users can also use video-conferencing apps like Zoom, Google Duo, Microsoft Teams and others to call their contacts. The feature comes to Echo devices just ahead of the holiday season. Zoom has already announced the days it will lift the 40-minute limit off its app worldwide for free users. Microsoft Teams and Google Meet have also made day-long audio and video calling free for users.
Facebook shutting Irish units at centres of tax disputes
Facebook Inc has moved to wind down several Irish holding companies that had allowed it to shift billions of dollars in profit to the country, where it was lightly taxed, the Times of London reported, citing company documents. Facebook Inc has moved to wind down several Irish holding companies that had allowed it to shift billions of dollars in profit to the country, where it was lightly taxed, the Times of London reported, citing company documents. The Irish companies were used to hold its intellectual property for international sales, and Facebook companies around the world would pay the units for the use of the IP, shifting much of the sales outside the US, the newspaper said. Facebook’s main Irish holding company paid $101 million in taxes on profit of more than $15 billion in 2018, the last year records were available, the paper said. The move to wind down the units started after the US Internal Revenue Service took Facebook to court, saying the social media company was shifting funds through Ireland to avoid US taxes, the Times said. Facebook also moved billions of euros in profits back to the US from Ireland, the paper reported.
Alibaba antitrust fears worsen Xiaomi’s Mi 11 will not ship with a charger China’s internet selloff inside box, CEO Lei Jun confirms Like Apple intends to reduce the carbon footprint, Jun also cited "environmental protection" as the main reason behind the company's move to make the bold move.
Alibaba Group Holding Ltd led a selloff in Chinese tech giants triggered by fears antitrust scrutiny will spread beyond Jack Ma’s Internet empire and ensnare more of the country’s most powerful corporations. China’s e-commerce leader on Monday raised a proposed stock repurchase program by $4 billion to $10 billion, effective for two years through the end of 2022. The buyback program, which began this quarter, failed to stem a slump in the shares, which slid more than 5% in Hong Kong to a six-month low. Once hailed as the standard-bearers of China’s economic and technological ascendancy, Alibaba and rivals like Tencent Holdings Ltd now face increasing pressure from regulators worried about the speed with which they’re amassing hundreds of millions of users and gaining influence over almost every aspect of daily life. Alibaba has shed more than $230 billion from its peak, battered by the deepening scrutiny and allegations of monopolistic practices at the crown jewel of billionaire Jack Ma’s empire.
Like Apple intends to reduce the carbon footprint, Jun also cited “environmental protection” as the main reason behind the company’s move to make the bold move. Jun posted, (translated from Mandarin) “In response to the call of technology and environmental protection, the included charger is cancelled from the box. Hope to get your support. Is there a better solution between industry practice and environmental protection? Next Monday night, at the press conference, let’s talk.” Samsung also made an ad mocking Apple’s move but deleted the tweet after. There are also rumours that the South Korean tech major will be launching its flagship S21 series in January which will also ship without the charger. It is yet to be seen whether the removal of the charger will help in reducing the price of the Mi 11 or not which wasn’t the case with new iPhones. However, unlike the new iPhones, Xiaomi offers crazy charging speeds which will eventually lead to people buying chargers separately anyway.
