With 15 millionaires, Biden Cabinet’s net worth lower than Trump, Obama According to a Forbes report, 13 out of the 15 officials in the Biden team are millionaires, besides the president himself, who has a net worth of $8 million, and Vice President Kamala Harris, who is worth $7 million. US President Joe Biden’s Cabinet has an overall net worth of $118 million, a fraction in comparison to the previous Trump administration’s $6.2 billion fortune and the $2.8 billion combined net worth of Barack Obama’s second term administration. According to a Forbes report, 13 out of the 15 officials in the Biden team are millionaires, besides the president himself, who has a net worth of $8 million, and Vice President Kamala Harris, who is worth $7 million. The Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland, reportedly has a zero net worth. The first Native American cabinet

secretary overcame homelessness earlier in her life and won a New Mexico congressional seat in 2018. She has student loans worth USD 15,000, according to the report. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has a net worth of USD 7,50,000. According to Forbes, he made most of his $1 million earnings in 2019 and 2020 from book sales. While the current Treasury Secretary and Attorney General have the highest net worth in the Biden crew at $20 million, in Trump’s administration, Betsy DeVos, former secretary of education, stood out with a net worth of $2 billion.

U.S. House Passes Resolution in Trump Organization and top Support of India’s COVID-19 Fight executive are indicted in tax investigation HiIndia Newsdesk As per official estimates the U.S. had provided over $100 million in government assistance and a total of over $500 million in assistance including individual and

private sector contributions. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution , introduced in May, when India was in the throes of a massive second wave of COVID-19, expressing solidarity with India, backing the Biden administration’s assistance to India and asking it to facilitate in kind medical supply donations from the private sector. “The resolution stands with the people of India as they collectively work to stem the spread of COVID-19,” said Brad Sherman, a California Democrat and Co-Chair of the House India Caucus . “The U.S. must work with our partners around the world to quell the virus everywhere it persists,” said Mr Sherman, who introduced the legislation along with his Republican Co-Chair, Steve Chabot.

HiIndia Newsdesk A grand jury in Manhattan has indicted Donald Trump’s family business, the Trump Organization, and one of its top executives in connection with a tax investigation into fringe benefits handed out at the company, people familiar with the matter said Wednesday. The specific charges against the company and its chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, were not immediately clear. The indictment was expected to be unsealed Thursday afternoon after Weisselberg and lawyers for the Trump Organization were set to appear in court. But prosecutors in the Manhattan district attorney’s office have been examining bonuses and luxury perks that Weisselberg received — including an apartment in Manhattan, leased MercedesBenz cars and private school tuition for at least one of his grandchildren — and whether taxes should have been paid on those benefits.

Canada heatwave: Hundreds of sudden deaths recorded HiIndia Newsdesk

Hundreds of sudden deaths, many of them suspected of being heat-related, have been reported during Canada’s record-breaking heatwave, officials say. Some 486 fatalities were recorded over the past five days in British Columbia alone, a 195% increase on the usual amount over that period. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has offered condolences to the victims, many of whom were elderly. Abnormally high temperatures have been recorded across North America. British Columbia Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe said on Wednesday: “It is believed likely that the significant increase in deaths reported is attributable to the extreme weather BC has experienced and continues to impact many parts of our province.” She said many of those who died in the heatwave had lived alone in homes that were not ventilated.

On the other hand, even as gold loans rose sharply, non-food bank credit growth remained sluggish at 5.9 per cent in May 2021 as compared to 6.1 per cent in May 2020. State Bank of India (SBI), India’s largest bank, said its gold loans skyrocketed by 465 per cent to Rs 20,987 crore in FY2020-21. High demand for gold loan could be an indication of the stress in the rural areas, low-income group and micro units. SBI charges an interest rate of 7.50 per cent and the collateral is gold which can be recovered easily if any default happens.

It also says the vaccine is safe for children between 12 and 18 years. But its trial data is not peer-reviewed yet. HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: Zydus Cadila has requested emergency use approval for its ZyCoV-D three-dose Covid shot that is the “world’s first Plasmid DNA vaccine”. The shot is “needle-free”, says the company, and “safe for children”. The company plans to manufacture up to 120 million doses of the shot annually. An approval for ZyCoV-D would make it the fifth vaccine cleared for use in India after Serum Institute of India’s Covishield, Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin, Russia’s Sputnik V and the US-made Moderna. Zydus claims its vaccine is 66.6 per cent effective against symptomatic Covid cases and 100 per cent for moderate disease. It also says the vaccine is safe for children between 12 and 18 years. But its trial data is not peer-reviewed yet. ZyCoV-D showed safety and efficacy in a late-stage trial with more than 28,000 volunteers across the country, including about 1,000 subjects in the 12-18 year age group, Zydus says.

Top Stories of the Week “Just Give Us The Vaccines,” WHO Pleads HiIndia Newsdesk Geneva: Rich countries are opening up societies and vaccinating young people who are not at great risk from COVID-19, while the poorest countries cruelly lack doses, the World Health Organization said on Friday, condemning a global failure. The situation in Africa, where new infections and deaths jumped by nearly 40% last week compared to the previous week, is “so dangerous” as the Delta variant spreads globally, WHO directorgeneral Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said. “Our world is failing, as the global community we are failing,” he told a news conference. Tedros, who is Ethiopian, chastised unnamed countries for reluctance to share doses with lowincome countries. He compared it to the HIV/AIDS crisis, when some argued that African nations were unable to use complicated treatments.

Data released by the Ministry showed that the variant was present in 52 districts

across the country in March, and had spread to 174 districts by June.

ICMR chief Dr Balram Bhargava warned that even though more than 500 districts were now reporting less than 5 per cent test positivity, the second wave of the epidemic should not be assumed to have ended. “The second wave is not yet over in the country. We have still got 75 districts that have more than 10 per cent prevalence, and we have 92 districts that have between 5 per cent and 10 per cent prevalence,” Dr Bhargava said.

HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: Mixing Covid vaccines - which some data suggests could generate better immunity or more antibodies - is a “definite possibility” but more information is needed before a decision can be taken, AIIMS chief Dr Randeep Guleria told on Saturday morning. “This is something that has been looked at in the past - giving one vaccine as the priming shot and another as the booster. Some data suggests mixing vaccines leads to slightly higher side effects, but other data suggests it may lead to better immunity and antibody protection,” Dr Guleria said.

In a major blow to Bharat Biotech Brazil Suspends Covaxin Contract 630-205-6353

HiIndia Newsdesk Sao Paulo: The Brazilian government on Tuesday suspended its contract to import 20 million doses of Covaxin. What can definitely be called as a major blow to Bharat Biotech’s plan to market Covaxin abroad, the move comes as the $300-million deal with the Indian company now stands suspended. There has been a growing scandal around the contract in Brazil, involving the President. The Brazilian government has now seem to go on a damage-control mode to save the president’s reputation in a multi-million-dollar case On Tuesday, Brazil’s minister of health Marcelo Queiroga announced that the government has “decided to suspend the contract on the recommendation of the federal comptroller general (CGU)”, which is investigating the alleged irregularities in the contract. After examining the entire contract, CGU will decide whether to terminate the contract or not. But in the views of senators leading the parliamentary commission of inquiry (CPI), the contract is as good as dead. Senator Omar Aziz, president of the parliamentary commissions said, “ I think they suspended the contract to buy some time and then cancel it. They will try to negotiate with the company and say that they have reached a limit because there is a great distrust among the Brazilian population and there is

The move comes as the $300-million deal with the Indian company now stands suspended a very deep investigation by the CPI. There won’t be a contract in a few days, I’m sure of that. The plan is to get rid of this contract because the investigation into the Covaxin case is now reaching the president’s office. The contract between Brazil and Bharat Biotech, mediated and signed by a local company called Precisa Medicamentos, has been in the eye of a political

storm as it became the main target of the parliamentary commission of inquiry (CPI) investigating the government’s handling of the pandemic. Last week, after a health ministry official, Ricardo Miranda, testified at the senate that he and his brother, federal deputy Luis Miranda, had informed the president about the serious irregularities in an invoice sent by Madison Biotech, an offshore company from Singapore, the CPI turned its focus towards Bolsonaro and Bharat Biotech, whose owner Dr Krishna Ella is also the founding director of the firm which operates from Singapore. According to CNN Brasil, the focus of the investigation is the invoice from Madison Biotech. “ The Indian company signed a pact with Precisa Medicamentos on January 12, 2021. Just 40 days later, on February 25, Precisa Medicamentos signed a contract with the Brazilian government for the sale of 20 million doses. At the time of signing of the contract, Covaxin had not been approved by Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). Yet, its purchase price was agreed at $15 a dose, the highest paid by this country for any of the six vaccines contracted so far. Rejected by ANVISA on March 31 and then approved for limited import with strict conditions on June 4, the Indian vaccine has been mired in controversy for months.

WASHINGTON, DC- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced today it will accept resubmitted fiscal year (FY) 2021 H-1B cap-subject petitions that were rejected or administratively closed solely because the requested start date was after Oct. 1, 2020. If your FY 2021 petition was rejected or administratively closed solely because your petition was based on a registration submitted during the initial registration period, but you requested a start date after Oct. 1, 2020, you may re-submit that previously filed petition, with all applicable fees, at the address below. Such petitions must be resubmitted before Oct. 1, 2021. Motel Owner Shot to Death

HiIndia Newsdesk VERNON, CT — A Connecticut motel owner was shot and killed after an argument over the price of a pass to use the motel’s swimming pool on a hot summer day. Zeshan Chaudhry, 30, of Vernon, was shot Sunday afternoon near the pool at the Motel 6 in Vernon after demanding $10 for a pool pass, police said. Suspect Alvin Waugh, 31 T h e s u s p e c t , 31-year-old Alvin Waugh, of Hartford, had offered $5, police said. “Mr. Chaudhry did not take the money,” police Sgt. Robert Marra told The Hartford Courant. “There was a verbal argument that ensued after that.” Chaudhry told Waugh, who was staying at the motel with a friend, to leave, police said. But he instead went upstairs, retrieved a gun and came back down, Marra said. “It sounds like the victim began to antagonize him,” Marra told the newspaper. “I don’t know if he knew that he had a gun.” Chaudry was shot several times and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Waugh ran into some nearby woods but surrendered to police after being contacted on his cellphone.

If you received a rejection or administrative closure notice for the original FY 2021 H-1B cap petition, you should include that as well. We also encourage the use of a brightly colored cover sheet indicating that you are refiling an FY 2021 H-1B cap case that was originally rejected or administratively closed solely because your petition was based on a registration submitted during the initial registration period, but you requested a start date after Oct. 1, 2020. This will help ensure that it is reviewed upon receipt.

Background:

In 2020, we implemented an electronic registration process for the H-1B cap. Prospective petitioners seeking to file H-1B cap-subject petitions, including

for beneficiaries eligible for the advanced degree exemption, must first electronically register and pay the $10 H-1B registration fee for each beneficiary. The electronic registration process has streamlined processing by reducing paperwork and data exchange and provided overall cost savings to employers seeking to file H-1B cap-subject petitions. For FY 2021, the number of petitions filed during the initial filing period was below the number projected as needed to reach the numerical allocations. This discrepancy was likely related to multiple factors, including the economic, political, and public health uncertainty created by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the fact that FY 2021 was the first year that we implemented the electronic registration process. Therefore, in August 2020, we selected additional registrations that were held in reserve. The filing period for registrations selected in August ended on Nov. 16, 2020. Some petitioners indicated a start date after Oct. 1, 2020. We rejected or administratively closed those petitions because they were based on registrations submitted during the initial registration period but indicated a start date after Oct. 1, 2020. Upon reconsideration, we no longer believe that the regulations required us to reject or administratively close those petitions.

adhuri Dixit can ace ethnic looks like no other. We have often said this, and we say it again as the actor once again stole the show in an ethnic ensemble from Qbik’s upcoming festive collection. Styled by Ami Patel, everything about the look was perfect. The black lehenga was given a nice twist by teaming it with a long, backless kurti with sharp slits at the side, instead of a regular choli. The intricate design on the kurti was just stunning, especially the sleeves. The look was accessorised with matching earrings and completed with hair tied at the back.

Pakistan markets sell sugarfree mangoes for diabetics

Pakistan markets now have sugarfree mango varieties for people with diabetes. The fruit, which otherwise has high sugar levels, has been scientifically modified by an expert at a private cultural farm called M H Panhwar Farms in Sindh’s Tando Allahyar.

Panhwar’s nephew and a mango expert Ghulam Sarwar was quoted as saying, “The Government of Pakistan had conferred Sitara-e-Imtiaz on Panhwar for his research related to fruits including mangoes and banana. After his death, I continued his work and carried out modification after importing different genres of mangoes [from foreign countries] to test its growth in this atmosphere and soil.” Sarwar mentioned that the project was being run on a personal level without any assistance from the government. He added that his technique aimed to improve the fruit’s shelf life, control sugar level for diabetics, and also improve production to introduce new varieties.

W

hen you have the choice of a comfy couch or cozy recliner chair, odds are you’re not thinking about popping a squat on a hard floor. But, believe it or not, the simple act of sitting on the ground can help you live longer and stronger. Indeed, July 2014 research in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that the ability to get up from the floor is a significant predictor of longevity in people ages 51 to 80. In the study, those who had the hardest time with the task were five to six times more likely to die during the researchers’ follow-up period than those who could sit and stand with ease. While the study is on the older side, more recent research, including a May 2020 study in the same journal, backs up the link. That’s because how well you can move from standing to sitting and vice versa is a reflection of your overall health, fitness and function, says Gbolahan Okubadejo, MD, a New York City-based spinal and orthopedic surgeon. Having more and more trouble getting down onto and up off of the floor? Here’s the silver lining: Sitting on the floor is also a simple, effective way to maintain strength, function and vitality as you age. Fortunately, you don’t need to shun the chair for every activity. But spending some time on the floor each day can benefit your health. Here, Dr. Okubadejo shares all the pluses of plopping down on the ground.

1. Better Balance, Stability and Coordination

Getting onto and back off of the floor recruits your balance, stability and total-body coordination, Dr. Okubadejo says. So, the more you do it, the better your balance will be. This is especially important as you get older because

S

itting on the floor probably isn’t your first choice, but sometimes you need to get down there to clean, play with grandbabies or make space for someone else to sit on the couch. No big deal — until getting down on the floor becomes too tough to manage.

If You: Feel Like You Might Fall You Might: Have Limited Eccentric Control

There are two phases to every movement: concentric and eccentric. These phases describe what happens to a muscle when you move it. The concentric phase involves shortening a muscle while the eccentric phase involves lengthening a muscle, Dr. Jeffcoat says. To build eccentric strength and control your body as you lower yourself to the floor, try slow squats onto a chair. • Stand in front of a target, such as a chair or Swiss ball. Position your feet about hip-width apart. • Lower yourself to the target on a 4-second count. If your butt touches the target before you count to four, you went too quickly. The point is to go slowly and maintain control. • Return to a standing position in 2 seconds. Pause for 1 second at the top before descending into another rep. • Do 3 sets of 10 reps.

Want to Age Well? One Surprising Thing You Should Do Every Day

19

it help reduce your risk for falls and resulting fractures.

2. Greater Mobility

Moving into a floor-seated position engages the muscles surrounding multiple joints and body parts such as your shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and feet, Dr. Okubadejo says. Thus, a daily practice of sitting on the floor can help improve your mobility. That refers to your ability to move through your joints’ full range of motion, which is critical to being able to move through life like you want to. It can also help you stay injury- and pain-free as you age.

3. A Strong Core and Legs

Sitting on the floor can help you build a sturdier core and legs. Here’s why: “The core must be engaged when pulling the body up from the ground, so getting up and sitting back down multiple times can lead to maximal core engagement,” Dr. Okubadejo explains. Plus, “rising from the floor forces people to perform a similar motion to a squat,” he says. So, when you regularly sit on the ground, you’re essentially doing several reps of the lower-body exercise throughout the day.

4. Healthier Posture

How to Sit on the Floor for Healthy Aging While sitting on the floor can support good health as you age, you have to do it correctly to reap the full benefits. Here, Dr. Okubadejo explains how best to sit on the floor. Avoid slouching. When your back is in a curved position, it can put extra strain on your spinal discs and vertebrae, he says. Instead, sit with your torso tall and straight. Gently squeeze your shoulder blades down and together. Sit on a small pillow or towel. This can ease any tailbone discomfort, he says. Plus, it can also place your pelvis in better alignment with your spine. Move your legs. Any position can become a problem when you hang out in it too long. Try sitting cross-legged, with your legs straight out in front of you or with your knees bent and feet flat on the ground.

Struggling to Get Down on the Floor? Here’s What Your Body’s Trying to Tell You You Might: Have Weak Glutes, Quads or Calves

To get down on the floor, you have to bend your knees past their usual range of motion. Your glutes, quads and calves all help stabilize the knee joint, and if those muscles are weak, you may feel pain in your knee when bending them and lowering your body, Dr. Jeffcoat says. Strengthening those muscles helps build stability throughout the entire leg, particularly the knee and ankle. Try slow glute bridges and calf raises.

Move 1: Slow Glute Bridge

• Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the ground. • Take 2 seconds to lift your hips up toward the ceiling, then take 4 seconds to return back down to the starting position. • Perform 2 sets of 8 and gradually increase to 2 sets of 20.

Move 2: Slow Calf Raises

• Stand with your feet about hip-width apart and knees straight. Raise your heels together off the ground, taking 2 seconds to get to the top of the motion.

Sitting on the floor can help promote good posture. That’s because when you move from a standing position to seated (and back again) your joints must be aligned to maintain balance, Dr. Okubadejo. Proper body alignment relates to how your head, shoulders, spine, hips, knees and ankles stack up with each other, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation. What’s more, floor sitting encourages you to sit more upright instead of hunching your back — another factor for healthy aging. • Lift your right foot off the ground and slowly lower your left heel to the ground with a 4-count. • Raise both heels again, then lift your left foot off the ground and slowly lower your right heel to the ground with a 4-count. • Do 8 reps on each side, gradually increasing to sets of 15 reps.

If You: Feel Pain in Your Hips You Might: Have Limited Hip and Spine Mobility

Adequate joint mobility is essential for all things, but especially for complex movements like getting down on the floor, Dr. Jeffcoat says. Getting down on the floor without pain or risk of falling “demands functional range of motion,” which is harder to come by as you get older, she says. • Lie on your back and bring one knee to your chest. Hug your arms around your thigh, trying to touch your thigh to your belly. • If you can’t wrap your hands around the back of your thigh, you may prefer to support your foot against a couch, physioball or other object to assist hip flexion. • Repeat on the other leg. • Once you are able to achieve full range of motion in both hips individually, bring both knees toward your chest at the same time and clasp your arms across your shins.

BCCI confirms T20 World Cup in UAE, Oman

Serena Williams in tears after Wimbledon exit

HiIndia Newsdesk Serena Williams had to bow out of Wimbledon 2021 after she stopped playing her first-round match because of an injury. As a result, Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich is through to the next round. Williams’s dreams of winning an eighth Wimbledon singles title and equalling Margaret Court’s Grand Slam record of 24 ended in tears when she slipped and had to have her left ankle examined.

Srihari Nataraj seeks more frontiers to conquer

HiIndia Newsdesk Srihari compares a time trial and a real-time race to drag-racing when driving. “It’s as different as having someone next to you on the road and going at a comfortable pace. When it’s neckto-neck, you find that extra gear and split second which you wouldn’t if you were swimming alone,” he explains. “You don’t think of pain or how you’re hurting. You are too caught up in catching up with the leader.” Having fallen short by a whisker, Srihari would wait for his chance to race against time. Coach Nihar Amin, trainer Bala and the swimmer would go out for a pizza that evening before chomping at another chance to qualify. Amin’s biggest worry had been about how to rev up his swimmer to go it alone in the pool.

England Seal Quarter- Tour de France riders stage protest amid road safety debate Finals Spot

HiIndia Newsdesk As the Wembley Stadium announcer roared the final score — “England 2, Germany 0 — Gareth Southgate’s vision was momentarily diverted from his victorious players to the big screen. Shown beaming from the VIP seats, reveling in England’s passage to the European Championship quarterfinals on Tuesday, were David Beckham and Ed Sheeran. Prince William, wife Kate and 7-year-old Prince George were also there celebrating, as fans just like their subjects rather than royalty.

HiIndia Newsdesk The 2021 T20 World Cup will be played in the UAE and Oman in October and November, confirmed the Indian cricket board. In official emails to its affiliated units, board president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah explained that the decision was made due to concerns over the third wave of the pandemic.

Mithali Raj in top five of ICC ODI rankings for batswomen

HiIndia Newsdesk HiIndia Newsdesk Tour de France riders staged a protest at the start of Tuesday’s stage to complain about perceived dangerous racing conditions after a flurry of crashes reignited the issue of road safety. Having left the town of Redon in the western Brittany region to start Stage 4, the peloton rode at a moderate pace and all riders got off their bikes after about one kilometer. They waited silently for about a minute before hitting the road again. After the crash-filled Stage 3, several riders have criticized race organizers for setting up what they considered a dangerous finale to a Tour stage, especially in the early days of the race when nervousness is at its highest level.

India captain Mithali Raj has returned to the top five of the latest ICC Women’s ODI Rankings for batswomen after topscoring for India with 72 in the series opener against England in Bristol. The 38-year-old, who has completed 22 years in international cricket, rescued her side from a precarious 27 for two but India’s total of 201 for eight was not challenging enough for England, who will be defending their World Cup title in New Zealand next year.

‘All people of colour who hit out at racism, their careers ended in no time’: Michael Holding HiIndia Newsdesk The book is an enlightening, heart-wrenching, occasionally emotionally difficult read when you delve into the history of racism. You hadn’t spoken out a lot on this issue before last year. Why was that?

Part of the fearsome West Indies quartet from the 70s and 80s, Holding is still rated as the smoothest and sharpest pacer the game has seen. Now a commentator, Holding rarely pulls his punches, whether on T20 or bad umpiring.

Because I don’t live it. I had taken a selfish view that this is a thing I experience just for a few months when I am away from home. When I go back home, I don’t live that experience. So I just go back home, I am happy and I am content to be where I am. If you look at history, it will show you that… in the long run, it was a wise thing to do. Because if you look at all the Black people and the people of colour that have hit out against racism and made a stand, their careers ended in no time at all. Look at (American footballer) Colin Kaepernick. He is a man who in recent times took that stand. His career came to an end immediately. That shows you when Black people and the people of colour decide that they are being victimised and they want to talk about it, they want to complain about it, they want to protest about it, the system, the institutionalised racism that is evident around the world, locks you out. And you basically are dispelled from society. Perhaps that would have happened to me if I said anything earlier.

Parul Khakhar The Indian stay-at-home mum trolled for poem on Covid dead HiIndia Newsdesk

“The pain will get unbearable, but you shall not speak/ Even if your heart screams, you shall not speak.”

ne morning in early May, a poetess living in a nondescript town in India’s western Parul Khakkar’s poem titled Shabvahini Ganga, state of Gujarat finished her chores and picked up the newspapers. which she posted in her social media account on India was in the throes of a deadly second wave of the May 11, is a short but powerful satire in Gujarati coronavirus. Disturbing pictures of India’s holiest river, that describes Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the Ganges, swollen with bodies of people feared to have died of Covid-19 filled the front pages. There a ‘naked king’ ruling a ‘Ram Rajya’ (kingdom of were reports of overflowing cremation grounds, and of gods) where the sacred Ganga serves as a ‘hearse’ patients choking to death because of a lack of oxygen. for corpses. The 14-line poem was promptly Stirred by what she saw and read, Parul Khakhar translated into at least six languages, becoming quickly wrote a poem. She posted the mournful 14line dirge called Shabvahini Ganga (A hearse called the voice of all Indians who are saddened by Ganga - the Indian name for river Ganges) on her the tragedies wrought by the pandemic and Facebook page, where she has more than 15,000 angered by the government’s aloofness and followers. mismanagement of the situation. The Gujarati-language poem speaks about the wrath of the virus, leaving a trail of death and devastation in its wake. Khakhar writes about floating corpses, funeral pyres and the crematoria chimneys melting is like an ironic satire. She does not name Mr Modi, but under the load of the burning dead. her anguish and anger are palpable,” said Salil Tripathi, Without naming anyone, she writes: “The city burns a New York-based writer, who translated it to English. as he fiddles.” In another line, she exhorts the reader: “She has used tropes and rhymes to mock the rulers.” “Come out and shout and say it loud/The naked King She has since locked her Facebook page, but the poem is lame and weak.” remains. When Gujarati poet Mehul Devkala called Within hours of her post, all hell broke loose. her to congratulate her on not taking down the poem, The poem, which appeared to criticise Prime Minister she told him: “Why should I delete it when I have said Narendra Modi’s government for inaction, quickly nothing wrong?” went viral. In no time, it was translated into half a The 51-year-old poetess from the town of Amreli, dozen languages, including English. some 200km (124 miles) south-west of Gujarat’s main Khakhar was viciously trolled and abused by city of Ahmedabad, is new to controversy. “She’s not supporters of Mr Modi who took it as an attack on the known to be a political writer. She’s a popular, feelleader. Tens of thousands of harsh missives were also good poet who writes about nature, love and God. “homemaker first, and poet second”. Over the past decade, she has quietly marked her presence in the local literary scene. She has also written folk songs and ghazals, a form of poetry set to music, in her language. “She is always self-effacing and quiet. A very traditional woman, really,” says Rupa Mehta, a former station head of Doordarshan, India’s state-run news network, who knows the poet well. Shabvahini Ganga is her first openly political poem. “She writes simple poetry. But she has always been a great communicator,” says poet and writer Manishi Jani. When Jani called her recently to find out whether she was being harassed and how a group of writers could support her right to free speech, Khakhar, sounding calm, told him: “I am facing no pressure or harassment. You do whatever you feel is right.” Vishnu Pandya, who heads Gujarat Sahitya Akademi, a government-run organisation of litterateurs and poets, said Khakhar is “very good poet”, but her “new poem is not poetry”. “It is full of abuses and is defamatory. The rhyme is nonsensical. People who are against Mr Modi and BJP have misused the poem for their ends,” he told me. “We have nothing against her. She can write whatever she wants. We are against the misuse of her work by the left liberals and anti-national people.” More than 160 eminent people in the state have issued a statement against the Akademi’s stand against the poem. Last week, Khakhar returned with another poem, published in a local journal. This one is more layered, said Tripathi. “She is now critical of her critics, but she is also wary of those who cheer her on.”

One of the lines read:

“The pain will get unbearable, but you shall not speak/ Even if your heart screams, you shall not speak.”
