NEWS BREIF Biden Signs Cybersecurity Executive Order

HiIndia Newsdesk U.S. President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Wednesday that advances federal cybersecurity capabilities and encourages improvements in digital security standards across the private sector which has been hit by a spate of high-profile cyber attacks. The executive order establishes a series of initiatives designed to better equip federal agencies with cybersecurity tools. It follows a cyberattack against the Colonial Pipeline that caused some internal computer systems to be disabled with ransomware. This led Colonial to shut the pipeline, triggering fuel shortages and panic buying in the southeastern United States.

US-approved vaccines effective against B1617 variant of COVID-19: Official HiIndia Newsdesk

COVID-19 vaccines approved by the United S t a t e s l i k e P f i z e r, Moderna and Johnson and Johnson have effectiveness against the B1617 variant of the virus that is predominant in India, which is experiencing one of the worst outbreaks of the pandemic, a top American health official said. The observation is based on the latest data about the variant and the three major vaccines approved by the United

States, said Dr Francis Collins, Director of National Institute of Science. “The data is coming in, and it looks very encouraging that the U.S.-approved vaccines, the Pfizer, the Moderna, the J&J, do have effectiveness against this variant called B1617,” Collins told the media. “It’s a little less effective in that case than some of the others, but it looks like it ought to be good enough to make Americans protected. And that’s really a good thing to hear,” he said in response to a question.

US fuel firm resumes service Israel-Gaza violence challenges Biden’s approach after cyber-attack

HiIndia Newsdesk President Biden took office in January with little interest in pursuing an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement, for understandable reasons. President Bill Clinton hosted an Israeli-Palestinian summit during his first year in the White House. President Barack Obama appointed a West Asia peace envoy on his second full day in office. And before his swearing-in, Donald J. Trump vowed to secure an IsraeliPalestinian peace deal “which no one else has managed to get”. All of them failed to achieve a peace deal, as did President George W. Bush, who took up the cause later in his presidency.

House Republicans vote to oust Cheney

HiIndia Newsdesk The operator of the biggest fuel pipeline in the US announced it would resume operations on Wednesday evening after a five-day closure. A ransomware cyber-attack forced Colonial Pipeline to shut down the main part of its network on Friday. The 5,500-mile (8,900km) pipeline usually carries 2.5 million barrels a day on the East Coast. The closure saw supplies tighten across the US, with prices rising and a number of states declaring an emergency. Colonial Pipeline warned in a press release that it could take several days for the delivery supply chain to return to normal.

US environmental agency releases climate report delayed by Trump HiIndia Newsdesk The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has said for the first time that climate change is being driven at least in part by humans. The agency made the acknowledgement in a new report that had been delayed by the Trump White House since 2017. The Climate Change Indicators report charts the extent to which glaciers are shrinking, sea levels are rising and flooding is increasing. The impacts are being felt by Americans “with increasing regularity”, it says.

HiIndia Newsdesk US House of Representatives Republicans on Wednesday voted to remove Liz Cheney from their leadership, punishing her for criticising former President Donald Trump’s false claims that last year’s election was stolen from him through election fraud. Cheney, the daughter of former Vice-President Dick Cheney, voted in January to impeach Trump on a charge that he incited an insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6. In recent days the House No. 3 Republican Cheney said the false claims of a stolen election were “poisoning our democratic system” and that anyone who makes such a claim is “spreading THE BIG LIE”.

HiIndia Newsdesk The US state of Ohio will award cash prizes of $1m (£710,000) to five recipients of Covid-19 vaccines as part of a lottery launched to boost flagging up-take of jabs. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said only adult residents who had had a vaccine would be eligible for the draw. The first of five weekly drawings will be announced on 26 May, Mr DeWine said. He said the lottery would be paid for by coronavirus relief funds from the federal government. A world leader in Covid-19 vaccinations, the US has given 58.7% of its adult population jabs against the disease.

Israel-Gaza: Rockets pound Israel after militants killed HiIndia Newsdesk

Hamas militants have launched dozens of rockets at Israel after Israeli air strikes killed senior commanders and felled a multi-storey building in Gaza. Reports say several locations in southern Israel were hit, killing a young child in Sderot. The escalation of the fighting, which began on Monday, has prompted the UN to warn of a “full-scale war”. At least 65 people in Gaza, including 14 children, and seven people in Israel have been killed since then. The fighting erupted after weeks of rising Israeli-Palestinian tension in East Jerusalem which culminated in clashes

at a holy site revered by Muslims and Jews. Further violence in Israeli areas with mixed Jewish and Arab populations led to the arrests of more than 374 people on Wednesday evening, Israeli police said, and 36 officers being injured. There were reports in Israeli media of both Jewish and Arab individuals being attacked by mobs in Israeli towns and cities. They include a Jewish man who suffered injuries at the hands of Arabs in the city of Acre, and an Arab man who was dragged out of his car and beaten by a mob of right-wing Jews in Bat Yam.

NEWS BREIF China census: Data shows slowest population growth in decades

HiIndia Newsdesk China’s population grew at its slowest pace in decades, according to government data released on Tuesday. The average annual growth rate was 0.53% over the past 10 years, down from a rate of 0.57% between 2000 and 2010 - bringing the population to 1.41bn. The results add pressure on Beijing to boost measures for couples to have more babies and avert a population decline. The results were announced in a once-adecade census, which was originally expected to be released in April. The census was conducted in late 2020 where some seven million census takers had gone door-todoor to collect information from Chinese households.

Sydney casinos to ban cash after money laundering scandal HiIndia Newsdesk Israel’s president warned of a civil war between the country’s Arabs and Jews on Wednesday as fury and fear over shelling exchanges with Palestinian militants in Gaza ignited violence in Israel’s streets. Appeals by religious and political leaders for calm, and police reinforcements and mass-arrests, appeared to do little to stem riots in several ethnically mixed towns. Israeli TV showed what it described as “near-lynchings” of Jewish and Arab motorists.

HiIndia Newsdesk The Nepal government has extended suspension on operation of international flights till May 31 as coronavirus cases continue to rise at an alarming rate in the Himalayan nation. The deadly virus has so far infected 413,111 people and claimed 4,084 lives in the country, which has a population of approximately 29.5 million. The suspension period of international schedule flights has been extended till May 31, the Civil Aviation Authority said in a notification on Tuesday.

Brazil poll projects Lula would China Sinovac shot seen highly beat Bolsonaro soundly in 2022 effective in real world study

HiIndia Newsdesk Sydney’s only two casinos will make their gaming operations cashless in a bid to stamp out money laundering. Regulators said The Star and Crown Sydney, which is yet to be opened, agreed to the unusual move on Thursday. It comes after an inquiry earlier this year found it was likely criminal activity had occurred at Crown Resorts’ casinos in other Australian cities.

India Covid variant spreads to more African nations HiIndia Newsdesk An opinion poll published on Wednesday found Brazil’s former leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva would handily defeat far-right President Jair Bolsonaro by 55% to 32% in a run-off vote if the 2022 elections were held today. In a first-round vote, Lula would get 41% of votes compared to 23% for Bolsonaro, the poll by Datafolha showed, while no other potential challengers polled above 7%. If no presidential candidate gets more than 50% of Brazil’s first-round vote in October 2022, the top two finishers advance to a secondround run off.

HiIndia Newsdesk Sinovac Biotech Ltd.’s vaccine is wiping out Covid-19 among health workers in Indonesia, an encouraging sign for the dozens of developing countries reliant on the controversial Chinese shot, which performed far worse than western vaccines in clinical trials. Indonesia tracked 25,374 health workers in capital city Jakarta for 28 days after they received their second dose and found that the vaccine protected 100% of them from death and 96% from hospitalization as soon as seven days after, said Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin in an interview on Tuesday.

HiIndia Newsdesk Three more African countries Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria - have now detected the Indian variant of coronavirus, Dr Ngoy Nsenga, from the World Health Organization (WHO), has told . The confirmation brings to seven the number of African nations that have confirmed the B.1.617 mutation, which initial studies show spreads more easily than other variants

Dear PM: Major Religious, Political Events Among Factors Opposition Parties Send Behind Covid Spike In India: WHO Joint Letter With 9 Points HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: Twelve major opposition parties have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding that the Centre take immediate action as the ferocious second wave of Covid rips through the country, leaving hospitals overwhelmed and hundreds of thousands dead. Calling it an “apocalyptic human tragedy”, the opposition parties suggested a series of measures that included distribution of free vaccines, a stop to the work on the Central Vista project and a repeal of farm laws. “We have repeatedly in the past drawn your attention, independently and jointly, to the various measures that are absolutely imperative for the Central government to undertake and implement. Unfortunately, your government has either ignored or refused all these suggestions. This only compounded the situation to reach such an apocalyptic human tragedy,” the letter read. Azim Premji: Truth and good science key to confront crisis HiIndia Newsdesk

Industrialist and philanthropist Azim Premji said science and truth have to be the foundations to tackle the Covid-19 crisis, and the scale and spread of the pandemic need to be accepted truthfully. Speaking during the ‘Positivity Unlimited’ series of lectures organised by the RSSlinked Covid Response Team and being aired on national public broadcaster Doordarshan National every day this week, Premji, founder of Wipro, said, “First, we must act with the greatest of speed on all fronts and these actions must be based on good science. Actions that are not based on science in reality have a detrimental effect on the cause.” “At the core of the idea of good science is the matter of being willing to accept and confront the truth. Gunawardene Cleared Of Fixing Charges By Independent Tribunal: ICC

Man United lose to Leicester to hand Serena Williams returning after Premier League title to Man City ‘very intense’ training Former Sri Lanka Test player Avishka Gunawardene has been cleared of matchfixing charges by an independent tribunal, cricket’s world governing body announced Monday. The independent anti-corruption tribunal also dismissed three out of four charges made against another former Sri Lankan international, Nuwan Zoysa, who was last month banned from cricket for six years. Both players had been accused of trying to fix matches in a T10 tournament in the United Arab Emirates in 2017. HiIndia Newsdesk A weakened Manchester United were beaten 2-1 at home by Leicester City on Tuesday, ending Manchester City’s wait to be crowned Premier League champions. A thumping header from Caglar Soyuncu gave Leicester all three points after Mason Greenwood had cancelled out Luke Thomas’s opener for the visitors. The result left Manchester City 10 points clear of United with just three games left for both teams, wrapping up a third Premier League title in five seasons under Pep Guardiola. United, who face Liverpool on Thursday, their third game in five days, made 10 changes to their side who won at Aston Villa on Sunday with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer throwing in several young players. The result was also a huge boost to Leicester’s goal of a top-four finish and a place in next season’s Champions League — Brendan Rodgers’ side are on 66 points with two games remaining — eight ahead of fifth placed West Ham United who have a game in hand.

om Cruise has revealed some new details on how Mission: Impossible 7 has managed to continue its globetrotting shoot in the midst of a pandemic in a new interview with Empire Magazine that comes with yet another image that shows Cruise hanging from a moving train. The daredevil star is known for risking life and limb in the name of our entertainment every time he reprises the role of Ethan Hunt. One thing he’s not going to do under any circumstances is compromise the health, safety or financial stability of his co-stars and crew. In the interview, Cruise outlined the pressure he’s under as the leading man, producer and creative driving force behind a mega-budget blockbuster that so many

people are depending on to provide for their families. That’s not an easy task when Mission: Impossible 7 has been shut down more than once since shooting kicked off well over twelve months ago and has since touched down in Italy, England, Norway, Poland, the Middle East and back to England again for the final stretch. Cruise outlined the logistical nightmares that the production had to face every time they moved to a new location. “We had to create protocols with studios and insurance companies, and work on laws in each country, assuring them how we were going to film in the country,” the actor added. “There were times when people said, ‘It’s not going to happen.’ And I just kept saying, ‘It’s happening.’”

Crucial to put things together in advance: Sonu Sood

Amid news of an impending third wave, Sonu Sood joins hands with companies in China, France, and Taiwan to set up oxygen plants for India.

A

year after first taking charge of serving the people of India, Sonu Sood is leading from the front with the same passion, this time preparing for the next COVID-19 wave. Sood, who has been vocal about the need to provide timely help to people suffering from the disease, is now in talks with companies in France, Taiwan and China to acquire oxygen cylinders, and set up plants in India, should the third wave hit. “We have a Zoom meeting with them after 20 days. We should get our first set [of oxygen plants]. We are working on the logistics, and will put things together. I am learning a lot of things as we go about dealing with the pandemic.” The actor, who has been attending to requests from struggling citizens daily, has enabled them to source

cylinders and concentrators. He also collaborated with hospitals and organisations to facilitate the same. Should he be able to procure the required oxygen plants from France, he hopes to provide them to states like Delhi, Punjab, Maharastra and Uttar Pradesh. Oxygen plants are large industrial systems capable of providing several cylinders’ worth of gas per day. The oxygen generated can be supplied straight to the site of use, either through a pipeline, or via cylinders. “The idea is to be prepared for the third wave. We have upped the number of members on the team that is catering to rural areas so that we can reach out to everyone. A group of 400 people work on every call. We have realised that there are three major factors that people are struggling with — acquiring oxygen, hospital beds, and injections. I am sure that the government is doing its bit, but, it’s important to put things together in advance, this time around.” The actor doesn’t mince words when establishing that the country “crashed” under the burden of the ongoing second wave. “Only one to two per cent of our GDP is spent on healthcare. So, we were never prepared for a pandemic. Yes, India is a densely populated country, but that can’t be an excuse. We have to admit that we went wrong.”

Amitabh Bachchan contributes Rs 2 cr to Delhi Covid-19 facility

On Saturday, Big B wrote a long post on his blog in which he spoke about how celebrities are criticised for not publicising their contribution during the difficult times. He said that him and his family have hardly succumbed to the pressure of social media and the “every day abuse and the filth of distasteful comments” and contributed or made their effort in the quiet. “Only the receiver knew and that was the end,” wrote the actor. While the actor has not spoken about his contribution, it has come to light that he has contributed Rs 2 crore towards a Covid-19 facility in Delhi.

Huma Qureshi’s character changes the dynamics of Bihar politics

Prabhudheva: Salman Khan has knowledge about what his fans want from him

The makers of Maharani dropped the trailer of the series on Sunday. The trailer takes us inside the game of politics. In a couple of minutes into the trailer, we hear a voice over that states how politics is similar to the game of chess. Soon, we meet the important characters of the series – Sohum Shah and Amit Sial. The series is based in Bihar. Sohum plays the Chief Minister of Bihar while Amit Sial seems to be playing someone from the opposition party. We hear Amit talking about how politics and its power in the state is supportive of a certain caste while ignorant of the other. s we move on, we know the series promises drama, violence and a tale, which will keep us on the edge of the seat. There are several characters and each character has a role to play. In the game of chess, you cannot win until you take over the Queen, but who is the queen in Maharani? It is Huma Qureshi. The trailer gives a glimpse of her journey from a wife to Chief Minister to becoming the CM herself. In one of the sequence, we see a hurt Sohum Shah in hospital, a few scenes later, he addresses the media and his party members that his seat will be taken up by his wife Rani Bharati, which proves to be a game changer. So, will Huma aka Rani be able to take up this challenge and survive the game? To find the answer, we will have to watch the series, which will stream on SonyLIV from May 28 onwards.

Rather reticent, Prabhudheva’s humble persona could well be an antidote to Salman Khan’s flamboyance. And while the duo’s pairing for Wanted had seemed to be uncanny in 2009, they have, via several further collaborations, established that their distinct sensibilities complement one another. As the filmmaker-choreographer gears up for the release of his next, the Khan-fronted Radhe - Your Most Wanted Bhai, Prabhudheva tells mid-day, “Sir [Khan] has a persona [that is unique]. We are acquainted with one another’s working methods, and follow a plan, when on set. He has knowledge about what his fans want from him, and love about him. Because we are both aware of the different essentials [of making a film], we respect one another, which makes the process of working together, easier.”

he Australian newspaper republished the story with a scathing summary: “Arrogance, hyper-nationalism and bureaucratic incompetence have combined to create a crisis of epic proportions, critics say, as India’s crowdloving PM basks while citizens literally suffocate.” It earned a rebuke from India, but there’s no denying the fact that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cherished image has taken a bad hit. Stories from India’s punishing second wave have dominated global news and social media feeds - people gasping to stay alive as they wait for critical care beds and treatment; desperate families scrambling for everything, from oxygen cylinders to a doctor’s appointment; mass funeral pyres and parking lots turning into crematoriums to accommodate the rising number of dead. Coverage the world over has pinned the blame on Mr Modi - a man who has often presented himself as an able administrator with an eye for detail, who is now floundering as India’s daily cases break records.

Special Story “Arrogance, hypernationalism and bureaucratic incompetence have combined to create a crisis of epic proportions, critics say, as India’s crowdloving PM basks while citizens literally suffocate.” “He put his name and his stamp on everything. So when something goes wrong he has to take the fall. You can’t have it both ways,” Mr Agrawal says. Mr Modi built an impressive brand abroad too - “He is at his best outside India,” wrote one newspaper. He drew a “roaring crowd” at the iconic Madison Square Gardens and overshadowed former US President Donald Trump at the Howdy, Modi! gathering in Texas. “He deployed this imagery of himself so aggressively,” Mr Agrawal says. He was even called the “most physically demonstrative Indian leader in years.” His muscular nationalism was a balm for Indians at home and overseas, and promised the emergence of a superpower. Now, Mr Agrawal says, it is “galling” for Indians everywhere to see how their economic peers - Thailand, Vietnam, Bangladesh - have fared better against Covid. “There’s embarrassment among the diaspora that the country which they have got used to describing to their friends as a rising power is now being shown the way it is.”

‘A crack in the facade’

“If competence was his calling card, many people are calling that into question,” political scientist Milan Vaishnav says. “It’s not just that the government seems to be fumbling or absent, it’s that they actively contributed to exacerbating the situation.” Mr Modi is far from being the only leader to have bungled his Covid response. But his fall from grace is so pronounced, Mr Vaishnav says, because, unlike former US President Donald Trump and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, he was not a “Covid denier”. HiIndia Newsdesk Hyderabad: Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao said the Covid-19 situation in Telangana had significantly improved compared to other States. Hyderabad, he said, has become the beacon of hope for Covid treatment for not only patients from within the State but also those from four neighbouring States. Speaking to the media after the first meeting of the Covid-19 Task Force chaired by him on Wednesday, the Minister said the State government had made significant progress in controlling the pandemic with the cooperation of all. He pointed out that Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Harsh Vardhan also stated that the intensity of Covid-19 is on the decline in Telangana.

HiIndia Newsdesk Hyderabad: Two weeks after two youngsters shot dead a security guard and injured another before fleeing with Rs 5 lakh from an ATM kiosk in Kukatpally, the Cyberabad Police arrested Ajeet Kumar (23), and Mukesh Kumar (21), both natives of Bihar. Police recovered Rs 6.3 lakh, a country-made pistol and ammunition from them. According to the police, Ajeet Kumar, a contractor, and Mukesh, a student, were earlier involved in robberies and attempt to murder cases in Dundigal, Jeedimetla, Keesara and Kukatpally. Ajeet had come to the city in search of livelihood 10 years ago and was caught in an attempt to murder case by the Dundigal police in 2018. After being released from prison on bail, he returned to Bihar but came back last year.

Tony Radakin, the highest-ranking British navy official, said, “As the Royal Navy embraces technology and innovation, HMS Tamar trials the latest game-changing kit with the Royal Marines.” The video has been widely shared, and has over 587,200 views so far. The jet suit, which can prove to be of

exceptional use in distress situations in remote areas, received rave reviews from social media users. Reacting to one of the videos, a user said, “This will help rescue people in hard to reach territories... well done.” Another comment read: “This is what I’ve been waiting for since I was a kid... Sanjana Ganesan Is All Smiles Man Left Dangling From 330-Foot Glass After Reuniting Bumrah At Bridge As Strong Winds Shatter Panels Home After IPL 2021

India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah’s wife Sanjana Ganesan was all smiles as she reunited with her husband after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 was postponed indefinitely. Sanjana and Bumrah, who got married in March, were part of the IPL 2021 and returned home after the tournament was postponed indefinitely midseason earlier this week. While Bumrah played for the Mumbai Indians, Sanjana was one of the presenters appointed by the official broadcasters of the tournament. In the loved up picture Sanjana posted on Twitter she can be seen sporting a broad smile, while siting next to her husband. The picture also shows the power couple wearing the same colour t-shirts.

A man in China was left dangling from a 330-feet-high, glass-bottomed bridge after its panels were damaged by strong winds. The terrifying incident occurred on Friday when the man was visiting the bridge located in the Piyan Mountain Cultural Tourism Scenic Area outside the city of Longjing, reports CNN. China is home to a number of glass bridges, walkways and slides - and they have become popular destinations for tourists and thrill-seekers. In this instance, however, one tourist got more than he bargained for when bad weather and high winds blew away glass pieces from the bottom of the bridge. Officials say that the bridge was hit by high winds of up to 150 kilometers per hour when the incident occurred. An image that was posted on Chinese social media site Weibo, and has since gone viral online, shows the man clinging to the railing of the bridge. According to BBC, rescue teams and firefighters were called to help the man and rushed to the scene on Friday. However, the stranded tourist managed to get back to safety with help from on-site staff. He was taken to a hospital and discharged after observation. “The staff of the scenic area rushed to the scene as soon as possible, brought emergency equipment and successfully transferred the trapped person to a safe area,” said a statement posted to Longjing City’s Weibo page. It added that there were no casualties.

Impressed by the technology, one user said, “Sometimes you just got to stare at these videos, amazed at how they’re actually a reality. Too awesome.” However, many others also had a bunch of questions regarding the usability of the suit in a conflict zone. For instance, one user asked how the officer would be able to tackle an enemy if both his hands were strapped to the suit. “How do you shoot back if fired upon?” he asked. Offering a suggestion, a user who goes by the name Tom Saunders, said, “The progress y’all are making is incredible! Keep up the great work, and maybe

move the hand system to the feet with an exoskeletal support frame around the hips and legs to free up that soldier’s hands.” Another user asked, “What do you do if you fall into the water? I don’t know how much the equipment weighs but would be able to shed it quickly so you don’t sink?”

California Governor Candidate Brings 500 Kg Bear To Rally

One of the many Republican candidates vying to replace the governor of California in an upcoming vote caused a stir Tuesday by bringing a bear to his political rally. John Cox is campaigning on the theme of “beauty and the beast” -- the “beauty” being current Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, known for his primped appearance in the state that is home to Hollywood. bCox has cast himself as the “beast” who will shake up politics in the most populous US state, where a brown bear features prominently on its flag. “The beautiful politicians have failed California,” Cox said during a rally in Sacramento, the state capital. “We need big, beastly changes to save it. I’ll cut taxes, make California more affordable and shake up Sacramento.” For a publicity stunt, Cox brought a Kodiak bear, considered the largest ursine species, to his rally. The bear, named “Tag,” weighs about 1,100 pounds (500 kilograms) and was born in captivity and trained to appear in films and television series.

Consume less salt and sugar

Reduce your salt intake to 5g per day, equivalent to about one teaspoon. It’s easier to do this by limiting the amount of salt, soy sauce, fish sauce and other high-sodium condiments when preparing meals; removing salt, seasonings and condiments from your meal table; avoiding salty snacks; and choosing lowsodium products.

THE ZINC EFFECT

A T

here has been a sudden interest in zinc, a heavy metal found in trace amounts in the human body. This is because it apparently has a partially protective role in preventing and reducing the severity of coronavirus infections. People testing positive for the virus are being administered supplements of zinc and Vitamin C. Zinc is a metal mined from the soil. The adult human body contains approximately two grams of zinc, 60 per cent of which is in the bones and muscles and the remaining in the rest of the body. Zinc cannot be made or stored in the body. It has to be constantly obtained from external sources. Zinc is essential for the efficient functionin g of gene DNA, enzyme reactions, wound healing and the immune system. In children, it is essential for proper linear growth and development. It is needed for the enzymes of the body to function. The requirement of zinc is 8 milligrams/day in women and 11 mg/day in men. The maximum tolerated amount is 40 mg/day. Zinc is found in shellfish, beef, pork, mutton, chicken, eggs and fish. Vegetarians can obtain it from chickpeas, beans, peas, mushrooms and nuts. Vegetables, cereals like rice and wheat contain phytates. This binds zinc in the diet. It then forms a macromolecule (zinc phytate) that cannot be absorbed. Vegetarians are, therefore, more prone to zinc deficiency. Also, in low-income countries, the diet is deficient in zinc-rich foods. Cereals there are also not fortified with zinc. A combination of Vitamin C and zinc is being advocated as a supplement for the prevention of Covid infection. It is also being advised for people who have tested positive for the coronavirus

How to get that perfect smile

smile is formed primarily by flexing the muscles at the sides and around your lips. Webster defines the smile as “a change of facial expression involving a brightening of the eyes, an upward curving of the corners of the mouth with no sound and less muscular distortion of the features than in a laugh that may express amusement, pleasure, tender affection, approval, restrained mirth, irony, derision or any of various other emotions”. This innocent feature of the body is accentuated by multiple factors, some of which are physical, like the eyes, the teeth and the shape of the nose and jaws. A smile can further be embellished by confidence, emotional well-being and a zest for life. It is no wonder that it is the perfect gesture of a universal welcome. Smile designing is a branch of aesthetic medicine where multiple specialists like cosmetic dentists, orthodontists, maxillofacial surgeons, periodontists (gum specialists) and dermatologists have a role in enhancing the face value and confidence of anyone who desires to enhance ones appearance. Smile correction procedures range from simple tooth chip treatment all the way up to complex structural jaw realignment surgery, depending on the presenting complaint and the detailed assessment by the specialist.

Sleeping habits you must change Adopt a few different sleeping habits and you’ll guarantee a good night’s sleep, despite your busy lifestyle.

Stay calm

Worrying about when you nod off or how much sleep you will clock up will do you no favours. There aren’t set rules, and some of us are naturally ‘night owls’ while others are ‘larks’. “Most of us have some degree of preference for late nights or early mornings,” said Dr Roger Henderson, who is working in collaboration with Somnuva. “Where an individual falls on this spectrum largely determines their individual disposition towardthe timing of daily periods of activity and rest. “It is a myth that everyone needs eight hours sleep a night as we all need different amounts of sleep as we age.”

Stick to a pattern

Don’t assume you can catch up on or stock up on sleep at the weekend and always feel better. “Even one night of disturbed sleep can impact on mental and physical performance the following day,” said Dr Henderson. He further added, “It is however possible to catch up but can take days or even weeks for the body to return to a normal pattern. If trying to make up for lost time, go to bed early and wake up at a normal time instead of sleeping in late.”

Soreness Is a Sign of a Good Workout

found that consistent runners (many of whom were well into their 70s by the time the research period ended) showed a lower incidence of arthritis than non-runners as they aged. It also showed that runners have a lower risk of osteoarthritis and hip replacements, suggesting that pounding pavements isn’t actually as bad for you as advertised.

Yes, there’s something masochistically satisfying about limping your way down a flight of stairs the morning after a big legs workout, but delayed onset muscle soreness – Doms to its Insta-buddies – isn’t actually a convincing indicator of progress. It’s thought to be caused by micro-tears in muscle, and tends to crop up when you do movements you’re not used to, when you deliberately slow down the “eccentric” (or musclelengthening) part of whatever move you’re doing (such as the downward bit of a squat) or just do a ridiculous number of reps. Conversely, then, you can eliminate soreness almost entirely by keeping the reps low, or doing moves that don’t have an eccentric, such as throws and sled pushes. There is such a thing as painfree progress.

Machines Are Pointless (Or Dangerous)

As sparse-and-spartan gym spaces emphasising basic barbell movements have proliferated, so, too, has the idea that using machines to train is at best inefficient, at worst dangerous. Machines force your body into awkward, over-linear movement patterns, goes the theory – reducing the input from important stabiliser muscles and stopping you from moving naturally. But while there is some truth to this, not every machine is the enemy. “Whether you’re a time-poor, technique-free novice or a more advanced lifter, machines can involve less setup, allow more work and provide extra stimulus to isolated muscle groups,” says the trainer Dan Osman. That said, the leg press is no substitute for learning to squat properly.

Lifting Heavy Will Make You Bulky

There are two key ways to get stronger: increasing the size of your individual muscle fibres, and recruiting more of them to fire together when you need to use them. The first is what bodybuilders aim to do, but the second is what your body would do – automatically – if you had to lift a car off a loved one. In sports where excess size is a negative, it is what competitors teach themselves to do. This is how female Olympic weightlifters in the lighter weight categories can outlift larger men. Getting big requires specific, targeted training, including lots of volume and extra calories and protein – and it almost never happens by accident.

Exercise Is Bad for Your Knees

Actually, it’s more like the opposite: properly done squats will strengthen the stabiliser muscles around your knee joints, safeguarding you against injury as well

If you're down, smiling actually prompts your brain to produce feel-good hormones, giving credence to the adage, "fake it til you make it" when it comes to your state of mind. Smiling is also a predictor of longevity. In a 2010 out of Wayne State University, researchers looked at Major League baseball card photos from 1952. They found that the span of a player's smile actually predicted his lifespan -- unsmiling players lived 72.9 years on average, while beaming players lived a full seven years longer. Similarly, a 30-year longitudinal study out of UC Berkeley examined the smiles of students in an old yearbook, with almost spooky results. The width of students' smiles turned out to be accurate predictors of how high their standardized tests of well-being and general happiness would be, how inspiring others would find them, even how fulfilling their marriages would end up. Those with the biggest smiles came up on top in all the rankings. Finally, research demonstrates that when we smile, we look better to others. Not only are we perceived as more likable and courteous, but those who benefit from our sunny grins actually see us as more competent.

grain should be blamed for causing weight gain, or highlighted for helping with weight loss as well

Let’s be honest: you’ve never seen Britain’s greatest living Olympian, Sir Steve Redgrave™, dry-heaving over the side of a cross-trainer. “It may be intuitive and burn some calories, but that’s all this outdated relic offers,” says Dr Cameron Nichol, the founder of RowingWOD. “When done correctly, the rowing machine uses 86 percent of your muscles spanning nine major muscle groups.” The rower also works with the time you have – if you need a short, horrible finisher, a 500-metre sprint will leave you sucking air and burning fat, while a more ponderous 10k feels almost meditative and the Olympic-length 2k is a test of will as much as power.

T

the choice is on your preference, and the way your body reacts to it. Some people find rice less filling than rotis, and end up eating more quantity of rice per sitting. "This is where the trouble begins, and you gain weight. So, the culprit is not the grain, but your style of eating," the Mumbai-based nutritionist. For all of you who find rice less filling or satiating in nature, you can make your meal more filling but increasing the quantity of vegetables or dal. "Similarly, some people find it difficult to digest rotis. It may make them feel gassy or have stomach distress. This makes them eat lesser quantity of roti, which may in turn help them with weight, to add that no particular grain should be blamed for causing weight gain, or highlighted for helping with weight loss as well. No matter what grain you choose, it is important that you enjoy eating it, and eat it in controlled proportions. Portion control is the key when it comes to weight loss. You can enjoy your favourite comfort foods, but do eat in limited portion size. As nutritionist Ishi Khosla says, you must eat only till you are 80% full. Eat your meals without any distractions like your phone, TV, book, newspaper or a laptop. This will help you to focus on your food and also prevent overeating.

How much vitamin B12 do we need and what's the best way to get it? What are the health benefits of vitamin B12?

What is vitamin B12?

This essential nutrient works to preserve the health of your nerve and blood cells, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Vitamin B12 also helps make DNA, the genetic material in all cells, and helps to prevent a type of anemia called megaloblastic anemia that makes people tired and weak.

“Vitamin B12 is essential for proper neurological and metabolic functioning, including the transport of oxygen in our bodies,” Whitney English, a registered dietitian based in Los Angeles, told. “B12 is used to make red blood cells, which carry oxygen in the body. What else are B12 vitamins good for? Vitamin B12 is also a ‘co-factor’ in DNA synthesis. Finally, B12 is required to make myelin, the protective layer that coats nerve cells.” Our bodies need vitamin B12, but they don’t make it on their own. You can get more of this nutrient in your diet by eating vitamin B12 foods like: * Nutritional yeast * Eggs * Cheese * Milk * Yogurt * Fortified non-dairy milks * Fortified breakfast cereals * Beef, liver and chicken * Fish, such as canned tuna, sockeye salmon and rainbow trout * Clams. The recommended daily allowance of vitamin B12 for adults isn’t much — 2.4 mcg, according to the NIH.

Rasika Dugal’s style deserves your attention Styled by Who Wore What When, the actor kept it simple yet supremely elegant -check out the pics here.

Vegan shoe brand Greensole banks on partnerships for growth

T

he brand is planning to expand its presence in the Indian market by partnering with online, offline retailers to make deeper inroads in the nascent sustainable footwear market. Greensole expects its sales to increase going forward on the back of growing consumer awareness coupled with increasing demand for vegan and sustainable footwear. “Our sales have been rising, we mainly focus on retailing through online platforms and a good response has been seen from the metros. We look at expanding online, offline through partnerships with brands and emerging as a trend leader of sustainability and social good in the footwear industry,” Shriyans Bhandari, founder and CEO of Greensole, told . “Footwear market is set to grow multi-fold, especially for socially conscious and sustainable brands which are relatively underperformed in India. Instead of opening brick and mortar stores in India, we would look at partnerships with established brands which can get us into multiple stores while enhancing our online presence, products and brand image,” Bhandari

‘Want to make sure as we recover, we recover stronger’: Meghan Markle

Meghan Markle recently spoke on the need for an equal access to the COVID vaccine for everybody. The Duchess of Sussex spoke virtually at the Global Citizen’s VAX Live: The Concert to Reunite the World. “We’ve gathered tonight because the road ahead is getting brighter. But it’s going to take every one of us to find our way forward. As campaign chairs of Vax Live, my husband and I believe it’s critical that our recovery prioritises the health, safety and success of everyone, particularly women who have been disproportionately affected by this pandemic,” she said.

G

oing by her recent pictures, it seems like Rasika Dugal’s style has not just evolved but has undergone a transformation. The Mirzapur actor has been experimenting with her looks more and was recently spotted in a one-shoulder outfit from the label Vedika M. Well, no points for guessing that she looked absolutely stunning. Styled by Who Wore What When, we loved the colour combination and how the look was completed with easy make-up and a sleek hairdo. he elegant accessories and winged eyeliner really brought the look together. The asymmetrical hemline was complemented with a matching belt cinched at the waist, giving a nice structure to the flowy silhouette.

How to Display Your Books Like a More Sophisticated Adult

Carrie from the home organization site Lemonade likes to take the sleeves off of books to expose the books’ natural look and color. After removing the sleeves, you can sort each book based on their specific color. All of your blue books should be together, red books, yellow books, and so on. Carrie explains she likes to group books by color but not necessarily in rainbow order, stacking some books on their side as a focal point and a way to make the room pop. A sleeker way to display your books is with decorative wall boxes. To start, take differently-sized boxes and arrange them however you like on your walls. Create a large box with the smaller boxes, or a staircase progression up the walls—whichever combination inspires you the most. Place a few books in each box—not so many that they look stuffed, and not too few where it looks like something is missing. For a display like this, choose titles you want people to notice, as display boxes are a chance to show off your taste.

Michelle Obama says she worries about the racism her daughters may face

Michelle Obama said in an interview that she worries for the safety of her daughters Sasha and Malia whenever they get in a car by themselves. She expressed, “They’re (Sasha and Malia) driving, but every time they get in a car by themselves, I worry about what assumption is being made by somebody who doesn’t know everything about them: The fact that they are good students and polite girls, but maybe they’re playing their music a little loud. Maybe somebody sees the back of their head and makes an assumption,” she said.
