Air travel is allowed with a negative Covid test. The US has curbed travel from Mexico and Canada since March 2020. "We are pleased to be taking steps to resume regular travel in a safe and sustainable manner," Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement. FDA sets new goal for lower salt in everyday American food
HiIndia Newsdesk Oct 14: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday is pushing to cut salt levels by an average of 12% in food ranging from packaged meats to cheese, trying to clamp down on a growing epidemic of preventable health issues that has plagued the country. In far-reaching guidelines, the FDA is seeking voluntary short-term lower sodium targets for food manufacturers, chain restaurants and food service operators - focusing largely on processed and take-out food. The agency wants to cut sodium intake to an average of 3,000 milligrams per day, compared with 3,400 mg over the next two and half years.
WA SH I N G T O N : - U. S . Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Wednesday the Biden administration intends to press ahead with its plan to reopen the Jerusalem consulate that traditionally engaged with Palestinians, despite Israeli opposition to such a move. Blinken reiterated a pledge he originally made months ago on re-establishing the consulate, which had long been a base for diplomatic outreach to the Palestinians before it was closed by President Joe Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trump, in 2018. But Blinken, speaking at a Washington news conference with visiting Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid and United Arab Emirates Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, stopped short of setting a date for reopening the consulate, which would strain relations with Israel’s new ideologically diverse government.

NEWS BREIF LA port to open round the clock to tackle shipping queues
HiIndia Newsdesk One of biggest US ports will start operating 24 hours a day to try to clear long queues of cargo ships stuck waiting outside. It comes as officials scramble to ease global supply issues that may lead to goods shortages this Christmas. The Port of Los Angeles in California will handle more goods at night after a similar move by nearby Long Beach port. The ports - which handle 40% of all cargo containers entering the US - have faced months of problems. Major US firms such as Walmart and FedEx have also committed to increasing their round-the-clock operations to help clear the jam, the White House said on Wednesday.
Biden makes major push for offshore wind power
HiIndia Newsdesk The Biden administration has unveiled plans to expand offshore wind energy in a move that could see turbines built along much of the US coastline. Seven areas on both coasts and the Gulf of Mexico will be auctioned for wind farms in the next few years, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said on Tuesday. It comes as President Joe Biden pushes to reduce US fossil fuel use and expand the green energy economy. Experts say dramatic action is needed to meet Mr Biden's climate goals. The wind farms are part of Mr Biden's plan to generate 30 gigawatts (gw) of offshore wind energy - enough to power 10m homes - by 2030. That goal falls short of the 40gw that the UK is planning. China is aiming to achieve around 73gw by the same date. The White House approved the first commercial wind farm in the US off the coast of Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts this summer."The Interior Department is laying out an ambitious road map as we advance the administration's plans to confront climate change, create good-paying jobs, and accelerate the nation's transition to a cleaner energy future," said Ms Haaland.

Covid: New WHO group may be last chance to find virus origins
Questions around the origins of Covid-19 centre on Wuhan, where the virus first emerged
HiIndia Newsdesk The World Health Organization (WHO) says a new taskforce may be the last chance to find the origins of Covid-19. It has nominated 26 experts to join the body, the Scientific
Advisory Group on the Origins of Novel Pathogens (Sago). More than a year-and-a-half since the virus was detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan, the question of how it first emerged remains unclear. The team will consider if the virus jumped from animals to humans in Wuhan markets or leaked in a lab accident. China has strongly refuted the second theory. In February, a WHO team tasked with investigating Covid's origins flew to China and concluded that the virus had probably come from bats but that more work was needed. Michael Ryan, the WHO's emergencies director, said Sago's work may be the "last chance to understand the origins of this virus". The announcement of the new group comes as CNN reported that China was preparing to test tens of thousands of blood bank samples taken in the early months of the pandemic. But Chen Xu, China's ambassador to the UN in Geneva, said Sago's work should not be "politicised". "It is time to send teams to other places," he said.

Police first received word of an attack in the town of Kongsberg, south-west of the capital Oslo, at around 18:13 local time (16:13 GMT). New Zealand reports biggest rise No invite to Russia for cyber crime meet in Covid-19 cases in six weeks
Storm Pamela knocks down trees, floods streets in western Mexico
A health worker administers vaccinations at a mobile clinic Oct. 7, 2021, in Auckland, New Zealand.
HiIndia Newsdesk Hurricane Pamela was set to dissipate on Wednesday night after knocking down trees, damaging businesses and flooding streets in the western Mexican state of Sinaloa, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) and Mexican officials said. Mexico’s National Guard police said officers helped some people trapped in their homes by flooding, and were working to clear debris and dozens of fallen trees in the beach resort of Mazatlan. Some shops and restaurants in the area were damaged, the National Guard added in a statement.
HiIndia Newsdesk New Zealand reported on Thursday its biggest rise in COVID-19 infections in six weeks, with all cases detected in Auckland, raising prospects of a further extension of lockdown restrictions in the country’s largest city beyond next week. Some 1.7 million people in Auckland are under strict stay-home orders until Monday as officials look to stamp out the highly infectious Delta outbreak, the first major spate of community cases in the country since early in the pandemic.
HiIndia Newsdesk Russia was not invited to attend a 30-country virtual meeting led by the United States that is aimed at combating the growing threat of ransomware and other cyber crime, a senior administration official said. Many ransomware gangs operate from Ukraine and Russia, private sector cybersecurity experts say. Some US officials and analysts have said Russian ransomware gangs operate with the Kremlin’s tacit approval, but are not directly controlled by the government. The meeting will be held over two days, involve six sessions and include topics such as addressing the misuse of virtual currency.
Melbourne Set For Covid Lockdown Suicides Among Children In Japan At Exit Despite Record Cases Record High During Pandemic: Report
HiIndia Newsdesk Sydney: Melbourne will exit months of COVID-19 lockdown next week helped by a faster-than-expected vaccine uptake, Victoria state Premier Daniel Andrews said on Thursday, ahead of schedule even though daily infections hit a record the same day. In the worst day of an outbreak of the Delta variant coronavirus that began in early August, Victoria logged 2,297 new cases on Thursday, up from 1,571 the day before and the highest for any Australian state or territory since the pandemic began. Eleven people died, bringing the total toll in the latest outbreak to 125. But the surge comes as Victoria also

nears the 70% threshold for double-dose vaccination among eligible adults - the level at which authorities have promised to end strict stay-home restrictions. That target was originally expected to be met on Oct. 26, and the vaccination level was 62% as of Thursday. "We will deliver the road map ... You get vaccinated and we will open up and I do what I say," Victoria Premier Andrews said, speaking during a media briefing in Melbourne, the state capital. At east 415 children from elementary to high school age in Japan were recorded as having taken their own lives, according to the education ministry's survey. Tokyo: Child suicides in Japan are the highest they have been in more than four decades, local media have reported, citing the country's education ministry. As the COVID-19 pandemic prompted s ch o ol cl o s i ng s an d d i s r upte d classrooms last year, 415 children from elementary to high school age were recorded as having taken their own lives,
according to the education ministry's survey. The number is up by nearly 100 from last year, the highest since record-keeping began in 1974, the Asahi newspaper reported on Thursday. Suicide has a long history in Japan as a way of avoiding perceived shame or dishonour, and its suicide rate has long topped the Group of Seven nations, but a national effort brought numbers down by roughly 40 percent over 15 years, including 10 straight years of decline from 2009. Amid the pandemic, suicides increased in 2020 after a decade of declines, with the number of women committing suicide surging amid the emotional and financial stress caused by the coronavirus pandemic, although fewer men took their own lives. The results showed that changes in school and household environments due to the pandemic have had a huge impact on children's behaviour, NHK quoted an education ministry official as saying.

Deal of the week
Tatas win back Air India The sale of the national carrier underlines the govt’s commitment to disinvestment, but still leaves it with significant debt. For the Tatas, it is emotional — as well as a long-term business bet.
T
ata Airlines was formed in April 1932 under the leadership of Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy (fondly called JRD) Tata, India’s first civil aviation pilot, Tata Group Chairman from 1938 to 1991, and the only industrialist to receive the Bharat Ratna. The story of Indian commercial civil aviation began on October 15, 1932, when JRD took off on his first official Tata Airlines flight from Karachi’s Drigh Road aerodrome and landed ahead of schedule at what was then Bombay’s Juhu airstrip (actually the wetlands of Juhu beach) . Over the next five years, Tata Airlines’
profits rose from ₹66,000 to ₹600,000, with 99.4% punctuality. The Indian princes loved the idea of airplanes linking their states with the outside world and Tatas’ business did very well ferrying the maharajas in special chartered planes. In 1938, Bobby Kooka, among the first employees at the company, designed the iconic Maharaja as the brand identity of Tata Airlines and a symbol of hospitality. It continues to remain the carrier’s identity 83 years later. During the tumultuous postPartition period, Tata Airlines had flown refugees from Pakistan to India and vice versa, a gesture acknowledged by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. In October 1947, Tata Sons proposed the establishment of a new company for international air service – Air India International. The proposal was accepted within three weeks by the newly-formed Government of India. Air India International’s first overseas flight from Bombay to London landed ontime (after stops at Cairo and Geneva) in June 1948. JRD was welcomed at the London Airport to a battery of floodlights and cameras, which had gathered to welcome the first Asian airline connecting the East to the West.
Over the years, Air India International developed an admirable reputation for its high-class on-board service. It had made an icon of its airhostesses in their exotic silk saris. However, clouds of nationalization were hovering over the civil aviation sector since independence. JRD opposed it on several platforms, and at a luncheon meeting with Nehru in November 1952, he even expressed his anguish at what he thought was a planned conspiracy to suppress private civil aviation, particularly Tatas’ air services. Nehru reassured him that there were no such intentions. All along, JRD’s contention was that the new government had no experience in running an airline company, and nationalization would mean bureaucracy and letharg y, decline in employee morale, and fall in passenger services. The government didn’t yield to JRD’s pleas and in 1953, Tata Airlines along with seven other domestic airlines were nationalized and rebranded as Indian Airlines while Air India International (the only international carrier in India) was nationalized and rebranded as Air India. The government invited JRD to lead both corporations. He accepted and became chairman of Air India and a director on the board of Indian Airlines.
After Air India privatiosation, work to monetise Alliance Air, 3 other AI suibsidiaries to start now: DIPAM Secy New Delhi: After the historic Air India privatisation, the government will now start work on monetising its four other subsidiaries, including Alliance Air, and over ₹14,700 crore worth non-core assets like land and building, DIPAM Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey said. The government on October 8 had announced that salt-to-software conglomerate Tatas have won the bid to acquire debt-laden national carrier Air India for ₹18,000 crore. This includes a cash payment of ₹2,700 crore and taking over ₹15,300 crore debt. The deal, which is expected to be completed by December-end, also includes sale of Air India Express and ground handling arm AISATS. Talking to PTI, Pandey said that the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) will now get down to working out a plan for monetising the subsidiaries of Air India which are with the special purpose vehicle AIAHL and setting off the liabilities. "There will be a plan for monetising the assets of AIAHL. It is a very big
task again of clearing of AIAHL liabilities and disposal of assets. In the AIAHL there is a company of ground handling, engineering and Alliance Air which have to be privatised," said Pandey, who spearheaded Air India privatisation. "It (sale of subsidiaries) could not be started because these all are intimately linked. Unless and until Air India goes, we could not proceed with other things," he added. As a precursor to Air India sale, the government in 2019 had set up a special purpose vehicle — Air India Assets Holding Ltd (AIAHL) — for holding debt and non-core assets of the Air India group. Four Air India subsidiaries -- Air India Air Transport Services Ltd (AIATSL), Airline Allied Services Ltd (AASL), Air India Engineering Services Ltd (AIESL) and Hotel Corporation of India Ltd (HCI) -- along with non-core assets, painting and artefacts, and other non-operational assets, was transferred to the SPV.

Why was Air India sold?
The sale of Air India to a private player has been in the offing for a long time. AI was started by the Tata Group in 1932, but in 1947, as India gained Independence, the government bought 49% stake in AI. In 1953, the government bought the remaining stake, and AI was nationalised. For the next few decades, the national carrier dominated Indian skies. However, with economic liberalisation and the growing presence of private players, this dominance came under serious threat. Ideologically too, the government running an airline did not quite gel with the mantra of liberalisation. By 2007, AI (which flew international flights) was merged with the domestic carrier, Indian Airlines, to reduce losses. But it is the mark of how poorly the airline was run that it has never made a profit since 2007. In fact, since 2009-10, the government (and indirectly the taxpayer) has spent over Rs 1.1 lakh crore to either directly make up the losses or raise loans to do so. As of August 2021, AI’s debt was Rs 61,562 crore. Moreover, every additional day that AI remains operational, the government suffers a loss of Rs 20 crore — or Rs 7,300 crore per year.
What is the significance of this sale? From the government’s perspective, there are two ways to look at it. One, it underscores PM Modi’s commitment to reducing the government’s role in the economy; he can claim to have saved taxpayers from paying for daily losses of AI. Given the historical difficulties in AI’s disinvestment, or any disinvestment at all (see table), this is a significant achievement. However, purely in terms of money, the deal does not result in as big a step towards achieving the government’ s disinvestment target of the current year. Moreover, of the total AI debt of Rs 61,562 crore, the Tatas will take care of Rs 15,300 crore and will pay an additional Rs 2,700 crore in cash to the government. That leaves Rs 43,562 crore of debt. The assets left with the government, such as buildings, etc., will likely generate Rs 14,718 crore. But that will still leave the government with a debt of Rs 28,844 crore to pay back. So, it can be argued that if the government had run AI well, it could have made profits and paid off the debts — instead of selling the airline (that can make profits) and still be left with a lot of debt. From the Tatas’ perspective, apart from the emotional aspect of regaining control of an airline that they started, AI’s acquisition is a long-term bet.

New Delhi: Congress leader Randeep Surjewala today slammed the Centre over its “unilateral” decision to increase Border Security Force (BSF) jurisdiction in Punjab, and claimed it was meant to deflect attention from the movement of heroin through the Adani-run Mundra Port in Gujarat this year. Both states vote for a new government next year, with the Congress (in power in Punjab) and the BJP (in power in Gujarat) bidding for re-election in their states and a strong showing in the other. Inspired by Home Minister Amit Shah’s ‘chronology samjhiye’ remark, Mr Surjewala linked a 25,000 kg shipment that reportedly passed through Mundra Port in June, and a 3,000 kg (valued at ₹ 20,000 crore) shipment captured at the same port in September, to the order on BSF jurisdiction.

India withdraws 10-day quarantine for vaccinated UK nationals
HiIndia Newsdesk India has withdrawn mandatory quarantine for fully vaccinated UK nationals arriving in the country. Under the revised rules, which were announced on Wednesday, British citizens no longer have to undergo 10 days of quarantine. This came days after UK eased similar travel restrictions for fully vaccinated Indians. There have been tensions between the two countries over the Indianmade version of the AstraZeneca vaccine. The UK had earlier refused to recognise the vaccine, known as Covishield, even though it is identical to the doses given to millions of Britons. So, fully vaccinated Indian travellers had to still isolate for 10 days and take Covid-19 tests - at their own expense - before they were allowed to leave quarantine. Officials in the UK designated Covishield an approved jab last month after a major backlash in India against what many saw as a discriminatory rule. But it did not add India to the exempt-from-quarantine-list and the restrictions continued. This led to more backlash from Delhi, which imposed a mandatory quarantine for fully vaccinated British nationals travelling to India. Finally on 8 October, UK added India to the exempt-from-quarantine list, ending the mandatory self-isolation.

J&K: Army pays tribute to slain soldiers
HiIndia Newsdesk A wreath-laying ceremony was held in Rajouri on Tuesday to pay tributes to the five soldiers who were killed in a fierce gunfight with terrorists in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. Naib Subedar (Junior Commissioned Officer) Jaswinder Singh, Naik Mandeep Singh, Sepoys Gajjan Singh, Saraj Singh and Vaisakh H were part of an Army search party that came under attack from the terrorists during the operation on Monday. All five were critically injured and later succumbed to their injuries.
data has been thoroughly reviewed by the Subject Expert Committee (SEC)... provided positive recommendations,” the Hyderabad-based company said. “This represents one of the first approvals worldwide for COVID-19 vaccines for the two - 18 age group... We now await further regulatory approvals prior to product launch and market availability of Covaxin for Children,” the company said. That final approval - viewed as a formality - will be given by the Drug Controller General of India. When it does come, Covaxin will be only the second vaccine cleared for use on kids in India; in August Zydus Cadila’s three-dose DNA jab was allowed to be used on adults and children over 12. A third potential vaccine for kids is Serum Institute’s Novavax, for which the DCGI last month cleared trials for children between seven and 11 years. A fourth is Biological E’s Corbevax, which has been cleared to conduct advanced trials on children above five.

the Coal India and Coal Ministry are making full efforts to meet the country’s demand. Coal India Limited currently has 22 days’ stock of coal, he added amid concerns over blackout in several states. “Yesterday 1.95 million tonnes of coal was supplied which is a record till date. We will continue to increase the supply of coal at a fast pace. We are hopeful that after the end of monsoon, the supply of coal will improve rapidly,” Mr Joshi said. “After October 21, we will try to supply upto 2 million tonnes of coal,” he added. “We want to assure the whole country that coal will be made available as per the requirement,” he said.
“Mr Amit Shah, New Era Now In J&K Because Of You”: Rights Body Chief HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi:Union Home Minister Amit Shah propelled a “new era in Jammu and Kashmir”, the country’s human rights body chief Arun Mishra said today. At an event addressed by both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, Justice Arun Mishra also said it had become the “norm” to accuse India of human rights violations, spurred by international forces. “It is for you, Mr Shah, that a new era has now begun in Jammu and Kashmir,” Justice Mishra said, speaking at the start of the event to mark 28 years of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), which he heads. Justice Mishra also commented: “It is now a norm to accuse India of human rights violation at the behest of international forces.”
Pak Terrorist Arrested In Delhi, “Big Plan Foiled,” Says Rakesh Asthana
Jammu and Kashmir: Killing of civilians sparks militancy fear HiIndia Newsdesk Now, a spate of killings of civilians in recent days in Indian-administered Kashmir has again led to widespread unease, particularly among the region’s religious minorities. Barely two days later, assailants stormed a government-run school in Srinagar’s isolated Sangam area, killing the principal and a teacher - a Sikh and a Hindu. t has also brought the government’s claims of peace into question. Kashmir is claimed in full by both India and Pakistan, but ruled in parts by the nuclear-armed neighbours. Relations between the two countries have always been tense, but reached a new low when Delhi revoked the region’s special autonomy in 2019. The move was followed by a months-long communications blockade and a slew of administrative changes, which locals say are aimed to bring demographic changes in India’s only Muslim-majority region. The most recent murders - seven in a week - happened at a time when more than 70 ministers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government took turns to visit Kashmir. The ministers were sent to highlight the “benefits of removing article 370” from the Indian constitution on 5 August 2019.
HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: Ahead of the festive season, the Delhi Police Special Cell foiled a big terror plan with the arrest of a Pakistani national from Laxmi Nagar today and seized an AK-47 rifle from his possession. According to the police, the accused was living with a fake identification of an Indian national and had obtained the Indian identity cards through forged documents. The special cell operation was monitored by the Commissioner of Police Rakesh Asthana. “It is a good catch by special cell ahead of the festive season. A big terror plan has been foiled by our team,” Mr Asthana said.

Valley Sikhs demand security
HiIndia Newsdesk Sikh leaders on Saturday accused the government of failing to protect the minorities in Kashmir and said they would not join work unless their safety was ensured. Fear has gripped the Valley after a spate of civilian killings by suspected militants. Four of them, including a Sikh woman who was a school principal, belonged to minority communities. Muslims are in majority in Kashmir. A few dozen Kashmiri Pandit families have migrated to Jammu following the killings while hundreds of government employees from minority communities have stopped going to office fearing for their lives. Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee general secretary president Navtej Singh on Saturday told a media conference that minority community members would not join their duties in government offices unless the administration assured that they would be protected in Kashmir.
government has assured that India has ample coal stocks to meet the demand of its power plants, seeking to allay fears of imminent blackouts in New Delhi and other cities. The current fuel stock at coal-powered plants is about 7.2 million tons, sufficient for four days, the Ministry of Coal said in a statement on Sunday. Government-owned mining giant Coal India also has a stock of more than 40 million tons which is being supplied to power stations. “Any fear of disruption in power supply is entirely misplaced,” the ministry said. The clarification came a day after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal warned of a looming power crisis in the megacity which is home to over 20 million people. Several regions across India have been hit by supply shortages in recent months, with utility providers resorting to unscheduled power cuts.

He is on a national registry for kidney donation. There is a long waiting list for the kidney, and he desperately needs a living kidney to save his life. The donor should be non-diabetic and under the age of 63. My daughters and I tried to donate but unfortunately our kidneys are not acceptable. Taapsee Pannu
swims against patriarchy in Bollywood; reveals 'actresses of stature now REFUSE to be ornaments in a man's film'
a l e - d r i v e n m ov i e s h av e dominated cinema at large across the world, not just in Bollywood, since the inception of the moving picture. But since we'd rather talk about the Hindi film industry for the time being – after all, we are most closely associated with it – BollywoodLife recently caught up for an exclusive interview with Taapsee Pannu, one of the best actresses to voice her opinions against male domination in Hindi movies, and what's being done to gradually change it. Revealing what was music to our years, the actress shed light upon how actresses these days are swimming against patriarchy in Bollywood. Elaborating how actresses nowadays are rejecting bit parts or where they have nothing much to do in male-dominated films, Taapsee Pannusaid, “I think, without really making that as a statement, a lot of actresses are doing that. You can now actually see that actresses of certain stature and calibre refuse to be a mere ornament in a man's film, unless they have something substantial to do. As an actor, it's only fair that you know that the number of scenes don't matter, the impact of the scenes do. If you see lately, actresses who're known for their credibility, have stopped acting in films where there are mere ornaments. You will not see them anymore in those kind of movies. So, it's not really being said in so many words, but, yes, I believe actresses are taking that call now. Right now, you're in the process of getting toward equality, it's still far away, if you give up now, things won't get equal even for future generations.”
Kirron Kher: ‘It’s something I had to accept’
Kirron Kher shared that she was doing much better now, and also informed that she never stopped working. “I’ve been working even when I was in the hospital, going through treatment. I’ve been in touch with people on my phone all along. In fact, I recently inaugurated an oxygen plant in Chandigarh, virtually. But my doctor isn’t letting me travel anywhere, especially by air, since my immunity is slightly compromised due to the treatment,” she told The actor also opened up about the anguish that one goes through during the treatment as she said, “It’s not the ideal situation to be in. Par yeh zindagi hai. One learns to deal with it and carry on. There’s no way out except to treat it. Nobody likes going through the treatment or its side effects.” The 69-year-old actor continues to visit the hospital once a month for maintenance therapy. She added that while some people get cured, some don’t; “Even the doctors don’t know how and why it happened. Medical science doesn’t really have a concrete answer. I would much rather not have it. But it’s something I had to accept.”
Ranveer Singh: Opportunity to connect with the youth on national television
No Time to Die off to a $56 million opening in North America, crosses $300 million worldwide After over 18 months of pandemic delays, No Time to Die opened on target. The final James Bond film of the Daniel Craig era grossed $56 million from 4,407 North American theaters, according to studio estimates on Sunday, to easily take the first-place spot. It didn’t break any pandemic or 007 records, but it didn’t fall significantly short either and is in fact the fourth-best opening in the 25-film series. James Bond isn’t Marvel when it comes to opening weekends. Bond has always had an older audience which is typically less inclined to rush out for the first weekend. In fact, the best Bond opening ever didn’t even crack $100 million. It was 88.4 million dollars for Skyfall which debuted to in 2012.
Y
ou can count on Ranveer Singh to play by his own rules. When most stars are OTT-bound, the actor is set to foray into television with the visual-based quiz show, The Big Picture. He says that in his growing-up years, he would watch shows hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, mesmerised by their ability to entertain the audiences. In 2000, Bachchan proved that television was no longer the poor cousin of Bollywood when he came on board Kaun Banega Crorepati. In the years that followed, several superstars had a taste of the telly world as they hosted reality shows. “Iconic mainstream Hindi film heroes like Amitabh Bachchan,
Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar have captivated the nation through their television shows. I’ve idolised them since childhood and closely followed their journeys,” says the actor. While Singh has emerged as one of the most successful actors of his generation, he believes that the show will introduce him to a larger audience. “They garnered immense love from people for their charismatic turns on the television screen. I have a great opportunity here to connect with the youth of India as well as the family audience. I hope I can continue the legacy of Hindi cinema heroes on national television.”

Distraught Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan make multiple calls to check on son's health; having sleepless nights Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan's son Aryan Khan was arrested by the NCB on October 3 and on October 7, he was sent into 14 days of judicial custody.
Shah Rukh Khan is having sleepless nights while Gauri Khan has her brother and sister-in-law by her side for support. The source was quoted saying, "It didn’t dawn on them that this will go on for such a long time. While the news of the arrest sent shock waves through the industry, SRK immediately sought legal advice on the matter dialling up some of the best experts in the country. Satish Maneshinde was approached, and he gave SRK the confidence that Aryan would be out sooner than expected. However, that wasn’t the case as the court rejected his bail plea on the grounds that it was ‘unmaintainable’ and that news really shook the family."
Star vs Food Season 2 Choreographer Geeta Kapur Nora Fatehi cooks Moroccan food with Indian spices, Badshah ‘blown away’ I prep before going on set, or I’d look foolish Eager to be part of India’s Best Dancer season two, choreographer Geeta Kapur says she has learnt of new styles from contestants while judging dance reality shows t’s not uncommon to hear Geeta Kapur go, “Stupendo fantabulously phantasmagorically magical” when she is overwhelmed by a performance. But Geeta Maa, as people fondly call her, is equally critical while judging dance reality shows. As a judge, she believes it is her duty to nudge dancers in the right direction. After wrapping up the fourth season of Super Dancer, the choreographer-dancer is now moving on to the second season of India’s Best Dancer.
Judging reality show after show, do you run out of compliments to give?
Actor-dancer Nora Fatehi decided to cook up a Moroccan storm in the latest episode of Star vs Food Season 2 on discovery+. Actor-dancer Nora Fatehi graced the latest episode of discovery+’s food show Star vs Food Season 2. Nora was excited to cook Moroccan food, sticking to her roots. Nora collaborated with prominent Mumbai chef Rahul Desai to curate special Moroccan dishes, including a chicken olive tagine and a lamb harrira. The lamb harrira was cooked with Indian spices, which Nora was a little nervous about. She couldn’t recognise many Indian spices and said that she wasn’t prepared for this challenge. The harrira was almost burnt twice, but it was saved and no damage was done. Nora was a little annoyed with the chef for not being quicker about it, and said, “It’s his kitchen, not my responsibility.”
The episode saw Nora Fatehi’s fun side too as she did a small dance with saucepans. She even pretended to be a better chef than Rahul Desai. When Nora revealed that she liked butter chicken and cheese naan, Desai asked how she manages to maintain her figure. She said, “I come from a culture where skinny is not good. We really love thickness and curviness in female bodies. I’m always trying to be curvy, and put on weight. It’s a cultural mentality. We eat a lot.” Finally, after a series of misadventures, including almost burning the harrira twice, cutting the onions haphazardly, the results were outstanding as surprise guest Badshah attested at the end of the episode. He was ‘blown away’ by the food.
Everybody is different, so no two compliments will be the same, especially if they’re genuine. I believe in being honest. Back in the day, we knew of only four styles; right now, the kids are experimenting with so many dance forms. I prep at home before going on the set, or I’d look foolish. If I see a unique [dance form] and don’t know of it, I discuss it with the dancers or the super gurus for more knowledge. In the last dance show, Tushar [Shetty, choreographer] did Chicago style-step. I asked him what it was because I knew of Chicago, the city. I then discovered that Chicago Hip-Hoppers has created their own step and named it thus.
In Super Dancer, they introduced 75 different dance styles in a special episode. How many did you know of beforehand? I didn’t shoot for that episode, but I caught up on it on television. I knew a lot of them, but there are only a few that I can do. I know a lot theoretically, but practically I am not good at
many of them.
Over the years, have you tried out any new styles besides classical dancing, which is your forte? I have tried contemporary and a fusion of hiphop. While doing films, we used to fuse a lot of ideas and styles. Bollywood [dance] is not exactly rigid. So, I learnt to break the discipline and pick up more styles, and became good at it, which is why I [still get] work offers.
The last film you choreographed was Happy New Year (2014). Have you left your career as a film choreographer behind? I got a lot of work offers post Happy New Year, but my mother fell ill from 2019 and was hospitalised. So, I was only doing reality shows at the time. In June, I helped in choreographing [a song] for Sooryavanshi. I am an old-school choreographer and love to do songs with romance and montage. But right now, everyone wants to do hip-hop and other things, which I don’t find inspiring.

New York City’s Gifted And Talented USCIS Reaches H-2B Cap for First Half of FY 2022 Replacement Program ‘Brilliant NYC’ This "accelerated learning" program will reach more than the 2,500 out of 65,000 students served by gifted and talented, officials said.
HiIndia Newsdesk NEW YORK, NY — So long, gifted and talented. Hello, Brilliant NYC. Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday touted the city’s proposed gifted and talented replacement program. Brilliant NYC will break down “artificial barriers” such as a test for four-year-olds that excluded and
segregated talented youngsters, de Blasio said. Only 2,500 out of 65,000 kindergarteners go into gifted and talented programs, he said. “We’re flipping the script,” he said. “We’re saying, let’s reach all 65,000 and see what they have and help them draw it out and help them build their future.” De Blasio’s daily briefing presentation followed his announcement last week that the city’s public schools will phase out gifted and talented programs. Find out what’s happening in New York City with free, real-time updates from Patch. Your email address Let’s go! Such programs received wide criticism from parents and advocates who argued they perpetuated racial segregation in schools. But de Blasio’s announcement also prompted a backlash from some parents and elected officials, particularly among Asian-American families.

HiIndia Newsdesk WASHINGTON, DC- A Free Trade Agreement is the next frontier in the India-U.S. relationship, the head of a top India-centric business advocacy group has said. Nisha Desai Biswal, Indian American
president of the U.S.-India Business Council and a former U.S. diplomat, who was speaking at a dinner hosted by Indiaspora, stressed that it is not tenable for the two largest economies of the world to not have a trade architecture in place between them, though its path is riddled with “all kinds of obstacles.” “The time has come for us to get serious about where the next frontier is in U.S.India ties. And neither for the United States nor for India, is it tenable for two of the largest economies in the world to be outside of the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) and to not have a trade architecture in place between the two of them,” Biswal. “We are starting to see real signals of interest from India to be able to explore that. So, I think the time has come to get serious. It’s not easy. It’s a path riddled with all kinds of obstacles, she said.

Ronaldo scores hat trick, Denmark qualify for World Cup
HiIndia Newsdesk Another hat trick for Cristiano Ronaldo, another win and qualification for the World Cup for Denmark. And yet more crowd trouble in a game between England and Hungary. There was a sense of familiarity to the World Cup qualifiers in Europe
on Tuesday, not least in Faro where Ronaldo extended his men’s record tally of international goals to 115 by scoring the 58th hat trick of his career for club and country in Portugal’s 5-0 win over Luxembourg. Denmark became the second European nation to qualify for next year’s tournament in Qatar, after Germany on Monday, by securing an eighth straight win in group play by beating Austria 1-0. The decisive win _ sealed by Joakim Maehle’s second-half goal _ came at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen where star playmaker Christian Eriksen collapsed in June during a European Championship game.
HiIndia Newsdesk Former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody is expected to apply for the high profile job of Indian cricket team’s next head coach for a fourth time, following the conclusion of the upcoming T20 World Cup, according to a media report. “It’s understood the former World Cupwinner and well-travelled coach is eyeing the Indian coaching job, which is set to be vacated by (Ravi) Shastri following the impending T20 World Cup,” Foxsports.com.au reported. The 56-year-old Moody, who currently serves as IPL side Sunrisers Hyderabad and Sri Lanka’s director of cricket, has expressed his desire to coach the Indian side before, applying thrice for the top job in the past, including in 2017 and 2019, but has never been considered.
Pace sensation Umran Malik to stay back in It is pretty scary how people behave UAE as net bowler for India in T20 World Cup on social media, says Akram Life has changed for Umran in a space of couple of months. With just two senior level domestic matches under his belt before the start of IPL, the 21-year-old has impressed skipper Virat Kohli so much that he has been summoned as a net bowler with Indian team.
HiIndia Newsdesk Jammu and Kashmir pacer Umran Malik has been asked to stay back in the UAE as a net bowler for the Indian team for T20 World Cup after making an impressive IPL debut with Sunrisers Hyderabad. Life has changed for Umran in a space of couple of months. With just two senior level domestic matches under his belt before the start of IPL, the 21-year-old has impressed skipper Virat Kohli so much that he has been summoned as a net bowler with Indian team. Umran impressed many with his raw pace while playing for SRH this season and consistently bowled around the 150kmph mark. He also bowled the fastest
ball of the IPL at 153 kmph. Umran’s father is a fruit shop owner. Umran also attracted praise from India skipper Kohli. “This tournament throws up talent every year, good to see a guy bowling at 150 clicks. It is important to understand the progress of individuals from here on,” Kohli said earlier this week. “The pool of fast bowlers being strong is always a good sign for Indian cricket and whenever you see talent like this, you are going to have your eyes on them and make sure you maximise their potential which is already being seen at the IPL level,” he added.
Wasim said while he can understand the passion of the cricket fans but he couldn't understand the bad language and insults that are used on social media.
HiIndia Newsdesk Pakistan pace legend Wasim Akram said one of the reasons he never accepted any permanent coaching assignment with the national team is because he can’t tolerate the online abuse that coaches have to endure due to the failure of the side. “I can’t stand misbehaviour from anyone and I am not stupid I see how people misbehave and insult coaches/seniors on the social media if the team is not doing well. I don’t think I have the patience for that,” he said during an interview in CricketPakistan.com.pk YouTube channel. Wasim said while he can understand the passion of the cricket fans but he couldn’t understand the bad language and insults that are used on social media. “I just think we need to ponder on the fact that whatever we say on social media reflects on what we are,” he added. The former left-arm fast bowler said people need to understand that the coaches and support staff can only plan, guide and motivate the players but at the end of the day the players have to perform on the field. “Sometimes you do well, sometimes you lose. But tell me do we see this sort of extreme reaction or misbehaviour in other countries. Have you seen Ravi Shastri being treated this way on social media? It is pretty scary for me the way people behave on social media,” Akram said. The former skipper, however, said being with the Karachi Kings franchise in the Pakistan Super League allowed him to work with most of the players. “So it is not as if I am totally cut off from the players. They call me when they want any help or advice and I love contributing to Pakistan Cricket,” he said.

Just Don’t Do It ! We all believe we should exercise more. So why is it so hard to keep it up? Daniel E Lieberman, Harvard professor of evolutionary biology, explodes the most common and unhelpful workout myths. lose more weight much faster through diet rather than exercise, especially moderate exercise such as 150 minutes a week of brisk walking. However, longer durations and higher intensities of exercise have been shown to promote gradual weight loss. Regular exercise also helps prevent weight gain or regain after diet. Every diet benefits from including exercise.
Myth 6: Running will wear out your knees Many people are scared of running because they’re afraid it will ruin their knees. These worries aren’t totally unfounded since knees are indeed the most common location of runners’ injuries. But knees and other joints aren’t like a car’s shock absorbers that wear out with overuse. Instead, running, walking and other activities have been shown to keep knees healthy, and numerous high-quality studies show that runners are, if anything, less likely to develop knee osteoarthritis. The strategy to avoiding knee pain is to learn to run properly and train sensibly (which means not increasing your mileage by too much too quickly).
Myth 1: It’s normal to exercise Whenever you move to do anything, you’re engaging in physical activity. In contrast, exercise is voluntary physical activity undertaken for the sake of fitness. You may think exercise is normal, but it’s a very modern behaviour. Instead, for millions of years, humans were physically active for only two reasons: when it was necessary or rewarding. Necessary physical activities included getting food and doing other things to survive. Rewarding activities included playing, dancing or training to have fun or to develop skills. But no one in the stone age ever went for a five-mile jog to stave off decrepitude, or lifted weights whose sole purpose was to be lifted.
Myth 2: Avoiding exertion means you are lazy Whenever I see an escalator next to a stairway, a little voice in my brain says, “Take the escalator.” Am I lazy? Although escalators didn’t exist in bygone days, that instinct is totally normal because physical activity costs calories that until recently were always in short supply (and still are for many people). When food is limited, every calorie spent on physical activity is a calorie not spent on other critical functions, such as maintaining our bodies, storing energy and reproducing. Because natural selection ultimately cares only about how many offspring we have, our hunter-gatherer ancestors evolved to avoid needless exertion – exercise – unless it was rewarding. So don’t feel bad about the natural instincts that are still with us. Instead, accept that they are normal and hard to overcome.
Myth 3: Sitting is the new smoking You’ve probably heard scary statistics that we sit too much and it’s killing us. Yes, too much physical inactivity is unhealthy, but let’s not demonise a behaviour as normal as sitting. People in every culture sit a lot. Even hunter-gatherers who lack furniture sit about 10 hours a day, as much as most westerners. But there are more and less healthy ways to sit. Studies show that people who sit actively by getting up every 10 or 15 minutes wake up their metabolisms and enjoy better long-term health than those who sit inertly for hours on end. In addition, leisure-time sitting is more strongly associated with negative health outcomes than work-time sitting. So if you work all day in a chair, get
Let’s not oversell exercise as medicine. Although we never evolved to exercise, we did evolve to be physically active just as we evolved to drink water, breathe air and have friends. Thus, it’s the absence of physical activity that makes us more vulnerable to many illnesses, both physical and mental. In the modern, western world we no longer have to be physically active, so we invented exercise, but it is not a magic bullet that guarantees good health. Fortunately, just a little exercise can slow the rate at which you age and substantially reduce your chances of getting a wide range of diseases, especially as you age. It can also be fun – something we’ve all been missing during this dreadful pandemic. up regularly, fidget and try not to spend the rest of the day in a chair, too.
Myth 4: Our ancestors were hard-working, strong and fast A common myth is that people uncontaminated by civilisation are incredible natural-born athletes who are super-strong, super-fast and able to run marathons easily. Not true. Most hunter-gatherers are reasonably fit, but they are only moderately strong and not especially fast. Their lives aren’t easy, but on average they spend only about two to three hours a day doing moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. It is neither normal nor necessary to be ultra-fit and ultra-strong.
Myth 5: You can’t lose weight walking Until recently just about every weight-loss programme involved exercise. Recently, however, we keep hearing that we can’t lose weight from exercise because most workouts don’t burn that many calories and just make us hungry so we eat more. The truth is that you can
Myth 7: It’s normal to be less active as we age After many decades of hard work, don’t you deserve to kick up your heels and take it easy in your golden years? Not so. Despite rumours that our ancestors’ life was nasty, brutish and short, hunter-gatherers who survive childhood typically live about seven decades, and they continue to work moderately as they age. The truth is we evolved to be grandparents in order to be active in order to provide food for our children and grandchildren. In turn, staying physically active as we age stimulates myriad repair and maintenance processes that keep our bodies humming. Numerous studies find that exercise is healthier the older we get.
Myth 8: There is an optimal dose/type of exercise One consequence of medicalising exercise is that we prescribe it. But how much and what type? Many medical professionals follow the World Health Organisation’s recommendation of at least 150 minutes a week of moderate or 75 minutes a week of vigorous exercise for adults. In truth, this is an arbitrary prescription because how much to exercise depends on dozens of factors, such as your fitness, age, injury history and health concerns. Remember this: no matter how unfit you are, even a little exercise is better than none. Just an hour a week (eight minutes a day) can yield substantial dividends. If you can do more, that’s great, but very high doses yield no additional benefits. It’s also healthy to vary the kinds of exercise you do, and do regular strength training as you age.
Myth 9: Exercise is a magic bullet Finally, let’s not oversell exercise as medicine.

Sanya Malhotra champions ethnic fashion, one outfit at time
The Pagglait actor was seen in ethnic looks -- and we just cannot get enough of the striking pictures
Sanya Malhotra has a unique style. She hardly plays by the books, and that only make her choices all the more rewarding. Recently, the Pagglait actor was seen in quite a few ethnic looks — and we just cannot get enough of the pictures. Styled by Sukriti Grover, the B-Town fashionista elevated each look with her distinct style and persona. For instance, she looked lovely in this pistachio green Punit Balana sari which was paired with a printed blouse. The choker worked well but it was her curly hairdo that completed the look perfectly.
‘Want to make India proud at Miss Universe 2021’: Harnaaz Sandhu
Harnaaz Sandhu, however, is aware that the road to the coveted pageant won't be easy. So far, only two Indians -- actors Sushmita Sen (1994) and Lara Dutta (2000) -- have won the title of Miss Universe
Model Harnaaz Sandhu says winning the title of LIVA Miss Diva Universe 2021 comes with a huge responsibility of carrying forward a legacy but she is determined to giver her best while representing India at the global pageant of Miss Universe 2021. The Chandigarh-based model was crowned LIVA Miss Diva Universe 2021, last week. Sandhu says the news of the win is yet to sink in but she has already started preparing for Miss Universe 2021, to be held in December in Israel. “It feels surreal and I cannot explain it in words how grateful I am to God and each and
"We must share credit, whether we’d like to or not, with a difficult and selfish collaborator called our circumstances," the entrepreneur added.
everyone who has been a part of my journey. But, along with the title comes a great responsibility to carry forward a legacy with utmost determination and passion. “I will make sure that I represent myself as the best version of my country and make India proud at Miss Universe 2021. Also, I see this opportunity as a way of strengthening the relations between Israel and India,” Sandhu told. The 21-year-old, who is currently pursuing her master’s degree in public administration, said getting an opportunity to represent the country at the global pageant in itself is a “huge success”.

This dessert, created with one of the most nutritious fruits, i.e., apple, is a must-have for everyone who wants enjoy desserts guilt-free. By using minimal ingredients – tart-sweet apples, butter, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, and granulated sugar – you can create a sweet dish that everyone would love!
Sautéed Apples Cut three apples (peeled or unpeeled; depends on your preference) into 1/4″ slices. Transfer them into a bowl. Add ½ tsp ginger, 1½ tsp cinnamon, ¼ nutmeg, 1½ tbsp brown sugar, and ½ tbsp granulated sugar. Mix all the ingredients well. Take a skillet and heat 3 tbsp butter in it. When the butter starts to brown, add the mixture of apples to it. Sauté the apples for 5 minutes to make them crisp-tender. You can serve with toppings of your choice. Vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, and toasted almonds are a few options for toppings.
Roasted Peaches Another great and healthy dessert made from a fruit! In order to make this dessert, all you need is a few peaches and brown sugar. Preheat a broiler. Cut 4 peaches in half and remove the pits. Now, put the peaches side up in a broiler-safe dish or baking sheet. Sprinkle ¼ cup brown sugar on the peaches and broil them for 5 minutes. The sugar should get caramelised. You can serve roasted peaches with toppings such as glazed walnuts, toasted coconut, Greek yoghurt, and vanilla ice cream.
‘Life has a frustrating way of reminding us that we are not the sole authors of our story’: Tim Cook
Chocolate Mint Truffles This is a healthy dessert option for chocolate lovers which is made using chocolate chips, almond butter, seedless dates, and mint leaves. First of all, grind 6 tbsp almond butter and a handful of mint leaves together. Now add 40 grams of seedless dates and 25 grams of chocolate chips and blend all the ingredients together. Finally, use a tablespoon to measure the truffle dough. Make balls out of the truffle dough. Store the truffles in the refrigerator for three days before serving them.
peaking to the students of Ohio State University, Apple CEO Tim Cook gave an uplifting speech. “It can be difficult to see the whole picture when you’re still inside the frame, but I hope you wear these uncommon circumstances as a badge of honour,” he said. “Those who meet times of historical challenge with their eyes and hearts open — forever restless and forever striving — are also those who leave the greatest impact on the lives of others. In every age, life has a frustrating way of reminding us that we are not the sole authors of our story. We must share credit, whether we’d like to or not, with a difficult and selfish collaborator called our circumstances,” the entrepreneur added. “And when our glittering plans are scrambled, as they often will be, and our dearest hopes are dashed, as will sometimes happen, we’re left with a choice. We can curse the loss of something that was never going to be…Or we can see reasons to be grateful for the yank on the scruff of the neck, in having our eyes lifted up from the story we were writing for ourselves and turned instead to a remade world,” he continued. “You enter a world of difficulty with open eyes, tasked with writing a story that is not necessarily of your choosing but is still entirely yours. You’re the pride of your parents and grandparents, of aunts, uncles and teachers, of the communities that shaped you in ways seen and unseen. You weren’t promised this day. Many of you had to fight hard to earn it. Now it’s yours,” he said in conclusion.
