Trump to launch new social media platform TRUTH Social HiIndia Newsdesk
Former US President Donald Trump has announced plans to launch a new social media network, called TRUTH Social.
Netflix employees protest 'transphobic' Dave Chappelle comedy show
He said the platform would "stand up to the tyranny of big tech", accusing them of silencing opposing voices in the US. Social media played a pivotal role in Mr Trump's bid for the White House and was his favourite means of communication as president. But Mr Trump was banned from Twitter and suspended from Facebook after his supporters stormed the US Capitol. Social media firms were under pressure throughout Mr Trump's presidency to ban him, with his posts criticised as insulting, inflammatory or peddling outright
falsehoods. Last year Twitter and Facebook began deleting some of his posts or labelling them as misleading, such as one in which he said Covid was "less lethal" than the flu. They took the decision to ban or suspend Mr Trump after the January riots, which followed a speech in which he made baseless claims of electoral fraud. Responding to the riots, Mr Trump called those at the Capitol "patriots" and showed no sign of accepting the result of the election, prompting Twitter and Facebook to rule that it was too risky to allow him to continue to use their sites.

About 100 people have protested outside Netflix's headquarters over the airing of a comedy special by Dave Chappelle, which they say was transphobic. Netflix staff and transgender activists staged the walkout outside the streaming giant's Los Angeles offices. Demonstrators called on Netflix to fund more trans and nonbinary talent, and other measures to avoid "transphobia and hate speech". Ahead of the rally, Netflix issued a statement in support of the activists. A video was also released featuring several Netflix stars, including Queer Eye's Jonathan Van Ness and The Good Place actress Jameela Jamil, thanking people for taking part in the demonstration.
Covid boosters
FDA approves Moderna and J&J shots HiIndia Newsdesk
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines to be used as booster jabs, and said Americans can now receive doses of vaccines that are different from the one they initially received. The news that mixing-and-matching will soon be allowed comes one month after the FDA authorised Pfizer booster jabs for some Americans, including those over 65 or at higher risk of severe illness and who work in frontline jobs. However, the FDA's ruling still requires final approval from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) before jabs can begin being delivered. Less than 5% of Americans have so far received a booster jab, according to US health officials. But with tens of millions of US residents already eligible for a third shot, many remain confused about boosters, who needs them and how they help.
'Build Back Better' plan hangs on Biden's shuttle diplomacy HiIndia Newsdesk
Keeping factions separate allows the president to lobby for his bill through peer pressure, without the acrimony of mixed political company. WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden is keeping Democratic factions apart as he tries to unite them in support of his "Build Back Better" plan. His shuttle diplomacy may be his best hope to strike a deal. On Tuesday, Biden sat down at the White House with a group of House moderates. He also held one-on-one sessions with Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., who are the only holdouts in the Senate. And he met with progressive lawmakers to deliver disappointing news: The package is likely to be
trimmed from $3.5 trillion to less than $2 trillion, free community college is out, and an expansion of the child tax credit will be scaled back. Biden held a similar round of meetings late last month, just before House leaders scrapped a planned vote on a bipartisan infrastructure bill that progressives are holding up to try to gain leverage in the "Build Back Better" negotiations. But Tuesday's talks featured movement in Biden's decision to start taking progressive goals off the table.
New York orders all city employees vaccinate, drawing police union ire HiIndia Newsdesk
NEW YORK: New York Mayor Bill de Blasio on Wednesday (Oct 20) ordered all city employees to show proof of inoculation against Covid-19 or be placed on unpaid leave, drawing criticism from a police union which vowed to fight the mandate in court. The mayor set a deadline of 5pm on Friday, Oct 29, for employees to show proof to a supervisor. Seventy-one per cent of all 160,000 New York City workers have already received at least one dose, the mayor said. The rate among the police department, where the virus has killed more than 460 officers, was also about 71 per cent as of Wednesday, NYPD spokesman Sergeant Edward Riley told Reuters in an email, up from about 47 per cent in August.

Doctors call for Covid Plan B to start in England HiIndia Newsdesk
South Korea launches first homegrown space rocket Nuri An "unacceptable" level of Covid cases means ministers should trigger their Plan B for the pandemic in England, doctors say. The British Medical Association accused the government of being "wilfully negligent" for not reimposing Covid rules such as mandatory face masks. Daily UK infections have been above 40,000 for eight days in a row. Health Minister Edward Argar said the NHS is not under "unsustainable pressure" to justify restrictions. He told BBC Breakfast there were about 95,000 beds in NHS hospitals, with 7,000 occupied by Covid patients and 6,000 currently empty. "We know how those numbers can rise swiftly, which is why we're looking at that day by day, hour by hour. But at the moment we do have the ability to manage," he said. The health secretary has warned daily cases could soon rise to 100,000 but is rejecting fresh restrictions right now. Speaking at a Downing Street news conference on Wednesday, Sajid Javid said that "at this point" the government would not bring in its Plan B measures - which include compulsory face coverings and Covid passports for entry to nightclubs and large events, as well recommending working from home.
Japan Princess Mako's Long Road To Marry Commoner Nears Its End
Tokyo:Japan's Princess Mako, the emperor's niece, will be married next week after years of criticism over her fiance that led to their marriage being postponed for three years and resulted in her being diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Mako, who turns 30 on Oct. 23, will lose her royal status after marrying commoner Kei Komuro, also 30. The two are set to live in the United States, where Komuro has a job with a law firm. 2012 - The two meet as students at Tokyo's International Christian University, where Mako studied art and cultural heritage and earned a national certificate in curation.
South Korea has launched its first homegrown rocket, stepping up the country's ambitions in space. The Korean Satellite Launch Vehicle II, known as Nuri, took off from Goheung located 500km (310 miles) south of Seoul. South Korea is the seventh country to successfully send a rocket into space. But it also comes as an arms race heats up between North and South Korea. Both have recently test-fired new weapons. Nuri cost South Korea an estimated 2 trillion won (£1.23bn or $1.6bn) to develop. Weighing 200 tonnes and measuring 47.2 metres long, it is fitted with six liquidfuelled engines. It blasted upwards in a cloud of smoke on Thursday. A television commentator said: "It looks like it's soaring into the sky without problems." South Korea plans to carry out four more launches of the Nuri until 2027 to increase reliability, according to the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) that is overseeing the launch.

A bomb attack on a military bus in central Damascus has killed 14 people, Syrian state media say. Two explosive devices attached to the vehicle blew up as it passed under Jisr al-Rais bridge during the morning rush hour, Sana news agency reported. Although Syria has been embroiled in civil war for a decade, such attacks in the capital are increasingly rare. Soon afterwards, army shellfire also reportedly killed at least 10 people in the opposition-held north-west.
Basanta Kunwar said more than two dozen people have been injured and are undergoing treatment in local hospitals across the mostly mountainous country.
The region is the last stronghold of the rebel and jihadist groups that have been trying to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad since 2011. The war has left at least 350,000 people dead, and caused half the population to flee their homes, including almost six million refugees abroad. Wednesday's bombing in Damascus was reportedly the deadliest in the city since March 2017, when 31 people were killed in a suicide attack at the main court complex that was claimed by the jihadist group Islamic State (IS).

The Asian alone population grew by 35.5% between 2010 and 2020 Improvements made to 2020 Census data collection provides a more accurate depiction of how Asian Americans self-identify
T
he recently completed 2020 U.S. Census continues to present interesting insights into the changing population of the United States. When it comes to Asian American population in particular, the recent redistricting data results from the 2020 Census reveal that there was a noticeable increase in the Asian-specific populations. Over 24 million people (7.2% of the total population) identified as “Asian alone or in combination.” “Asian alone” refers to people who reported Asian and did not report any other race. The Asian alone population grew by 35.5% between 2010 and 2020. Approximately 19.9 million people (6% of all respondents)
identified as Asian alone in 2020, up from 14.7 million people (4.8%) in 2010. In comparison, the Asian in combination population grew by 55.5%. Approximately 4.1 million people identified as Asian in combination in 2020, up from 2.6 million people in 2010. 2.7 million people
identified as Asian and White, making it the largest Multiracial Asian group. Hawaii, California, Washington, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Alaska, Massachusetts, and Maryland were the states with the largest percentages of the Asian alone or in combination

'Bangladesh Hindus Deeply Upset With India's Response on Violence': Community Leader Speaking on the recent anti-Hindu violence in Bangladesh, Gobinda Chandra Pramanik, secretary general of Bangladesh Jayito Hindu Mahajote, said that the United Nations issued a better and stronger statement than India. HiIndia Newsdesk

Kolkata: Beginning with the vandalism of a Durga puja pandal in Comilla on October 13 following allegations of deliberate insult to the Quran by Hindus at a puja pandal, a charge that has since been found to be untrue by the Bangladesh authorities, a series of attacks on Hindu temples, Durga puja pandals and Hindu households have been reported from different parts of Bangladesh over the next six days. The Wire spoke to Gobinda Chandra Pramanik, a Dhaka-based advocate and Hindu leader who serves as the secretary general of Bangladesh Jatiyo Hindu Mahajote, over phone, to learn about attacks on Bangladesh’s Hindu minority. Pramanik had also served as the
head of the Bangladesh unit of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), an organisation affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), during 2017-18.
Tell us how the series of violent attacks began and unfolded. The Nanua Dighir Par area in Comilla where the first incident happened is a Hindu minority area. The Durga puja that takes place there happens with the support of the local Muslims – financial, logistical and moral support. Since it’s a Hindu minority area, organisers do not spend the whole night at the pandal. After the puja ends at
populations. The 10 states with the largest percentage increase in the Asian alone or in combination population are North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, District of Columbia, North Carolina, Indiana, Texas, South Carolina, Montana, and Utah. “We’ve made several design improvements to the race question for the 2020 Census based on the research over the past decade,” said Rachel Marks, Branch Chief, Racial Statistics Branch at the Census Bureau’s Population Division. The changes provide a more thorough and accurate depiction of how people self-identify. “We have a lot more data to release in the future from the 2020 Census,” said Nicholas Jones, Director and Senior Advisor of Race and Ethnic Research and Outreach at the Census Bureau’s Population Division. “The Detailed DHC will include tables on detailed racial populations. This is where you’ll be able to get data on detailed Asian groups, such as Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Asian Indian, and many more.” Some examples include demographic and housing characteristics for sex and age, household and family type, and tenure (whether a housing unit is owner-occupied or renter-occupied). night, the idol is covered and everybody goes home. Sometime past midnight on October 12, or in the wee hours of October 13, someone put a Quran near the feet of a Hanuman statue that was installed at the pandal compound. Even before the puja organisers reached the pandal in the morning, someone had taken photos and informed the police. But when the officerin-charge came to remove the Quran, the police allowed a local resident to go live on social media and give a commentary of the event.
What was the role of the police and the civil administration? They had no role at all! Every year, the government deputes policemen for the protection of Durga puja pandals. But no such force deployment has happened this year and the police have only paid visits occasionally. All puja pandals had a list of contact numbers of police officers and magistrates displayed in the public for contacting in the case of an emergency. People called these numbers repeatedly but got no help. The police kept dilly dallying using various excuses. The vandalism started at about 10 am on October 13 and the police entered the scene only after 4 pm. By that time, not only the said pandal but also a number of temples in the nearby areas had come under attack. What’s worse is that, in the absence of the police, when some local residents, including Hindus and Muslims, tried to put up a resistance against the vandalism, the police on their arrival beat up these very people instead of the vandals.

A surge in violence in Indian Kashmir in recent weeks, including a spate of militant attacks on civilians and a widespread crackdown by security forces, has left 33 people dead in the heavily militarised region since early October. Kashmir, which is claimed in full by both India and Pakistan but ruled in parts by both countries, has been the site of a bloody armed insurrection against New Delhi since the 1990s.
I
ndian security officials have said that some of the assassinations have been carried out by The Resistance Front (TRF), which they describe as a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistan-based militant group, and Hizbul Mujahideen, a group traditionally made up of local fighters. India says Pakistan supports the insurgency in Kashmir, a charge denied by Islamabad. Pakistan says it only provides diplomatic and moral support for the Kashmiri people. New Delhi has struggled for decades to dampen secessionist sentiments in what had been its only Muslim majority state. Reasserting New Delhi's control in August 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi abolished Article 370 of the Constitution, ending the region's autonomy and removing its statehood by splitting it into the federal territories of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and Buddhistdominated Ladakh. The TRF emerged in the wake of the Aug. 2019 reorganisation of Kashmir, which was accompanied by a harsh communication and movement lockdown in the Kashmir valley to forestall any large-scale protests. In recent attacks, TRF members have mostly used easily-concealable small arms like pistols to shoot at their targets. In statement on social media earlier this month, The Resistance Front said it was not targeting people on the basis of their religion but only those working for Indian authorities. Reuters could not immediately verify the authenticity of the statement. Indian security forces have launched a wide crackdown, killing 13 militants in the last two weeks in multiple operations across the Kashmir valley. Last week, after the two teachers were killed in Srinagar, authorities detained more than 300 people for questioning, most of whom were subsequently released. Those detained included members of the banned religious organisation Jamaat-e-Islami, an umbrella alliance of secessionists known as the Hurriyat Conference, and others with previous links to militant groups. Over the past week or so, the Indian military has also been battling insurgents in a forested area in the Jammu region, which abuts the Kashmir valley, and has lost nine soldiers - the most number of casualties in a single operation in recent years. The assassinations have spread panic among some sections of the population, with scores of minority Hindus and migrant workers fleeing the Kashmir valley towards Jammu and other areas. Political leaders in the region have condemned the killings but have also questioned the Modi government's policies after deciding to split the former state in 2019. "None of these people deserved to die," former state chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said in a tweet. "One wonders what will it take for GOI (government of India) to realise that its policies have been a monumental failure in J&K & at what cost?" she said.

A surge in violence in Indian Kashmir WHAT IS HAPPENING? The fresh wave of killings by suspected militants appear to be targeted towards non-Kashmiris, including migrant workers, and members of the minority Hindu and Sikh communities in the Muslim-majority Kashmir valley. On Sunday, militants shot at three migrant workers in Kashmir's Kulgam district, killing two and wounding one, a day after two labourers from northern India were gunned down in two separate incidents. Last week, two teachers - one Hindu, another Sikh - were shot dead inside a government school in Kashmir's main city of Srinagar. Suspected militants have killed a total of 11 civilians since Oct. 6.
Kashmiris Not Involved In Recent Civilian Killings: Farooq Abdullah The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister also termed these incidents an attempt to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere in the union territory.
Srinagar: Kashmiris are not involved in the recent civilian killings in the union territory, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah said on Sunday, adding, these attacks were carried under a conspiracy to defame Kashmiris. The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister also termed these incidents an attempt to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere in the union territory. "These killings are unfortunate and done under a conspiracy. Kashmiris are not involved in these killings. It is an attempt to defame Kashmiris," Mr Abdullah told reporters. Two non-natives were shot dead by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar and Pulwama districts on Saturday. Between October 2 and October 8, seven civilians, including four from the minority communities, were killed by terrorists in Kashmir, triggering fear among the people in the Valley and criticism of the security apparatus by political parties. Asked about the National Security Advisor-level talks between India and Pakistan, Farooq Abdullah said any initiative that leads to friendship is welcome.

An Indian media report on ‘detention’ of PLA soldiers riled China up Here’s what followed
Artical Courtsy : theprint.in | Aadil Brar
China’s frustration over its inability to control the narrative in Arunachal Pradesh shows how Beijing tries to gain 'upper hand' in information warfare against India.
C
hina has attacked Indian media for spreading “fake news” about events in Arunachal Pradesh. But it merely reveals China’s frustration over its inability to control the narrative. On 8 October, News18, citing unnamed “government sources” in India, reported that Indian soldiers “briefly detained” some PLA troops in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang. China’s response suggests the People’s Liberation Army was rattled by the report. Chinese state media – including China Daily – and others called the report “false” citing unnamed PLA sources. China has refrained from officially commenting on the incident. “I am not aware of relevant information,” said Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian. But the Chinese state media gave the official response through editorials with no byline – among other actions. “Indian media recently spread rumors and hyped (that) ‘PLA soldiers are crossing the border in the border area’. However, according to Chinese
military sources, the Indian media’s hype is false and inconsistent with the facts. In fact, this is a routine patrol of our border troops on the border of our country,” said an editorial published by Science and Technology outlet of the People’s Daily. The newspaper had commented only a few times on the Ladakh stand-off last year.
A visit that triggered China The Chinese foreign ministry had opposed Vice President Venkaiah Naidu’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh. “Chinese government never recognised the so-called ‘Arunachal Pradesh’,” said Zhao Lijian. India rarely comments on the visit of Chinese leaders to border areas. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) didn’t comment on Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent visit to Nyingchi, which is less than 20 km away from the McMahon Line. Zhao Lijian’s statement on Arunachal Pradesh started a trend on Weibo, which was extensively
discussed on other Chinese social media platforms as well. The Communist Party-affiliated Guizhou Communist Youth League posted pictures of PLA soldiers from an unknown location with the hashtag ‘China never recognised Arunachal Pradesh’, which was viewed 390 million times on Weibo. “On a plateau of four or five kilometers, on the border of the motherland, and out of our sight, they stood silently, fought tenaciously, and promised the country by themselves. They worked hard, salute! Great rivers and mountains, not letting an inch of land,” said the post by Guizhou Communist Youth League, which has 1.7 million followers on Weibo. “It is known that Southern Tibet is easy to attack and difficult to defend because of its terrain. After fighting for two months in the Sino-Indian War in the 1960s, the PLA retreated after winning the battle. The ultimate goal was to exchange absolute control of Tibet and stabilize Tibet. The issue of southern Tibet comes after Taiwan,” said a Weibo user.

How Afghanistan’s neighbours plan to deal with it : India to figure out at Moscow HiIndia Newsdesk
India will be represented by J.P. Singh, Joint Secretary for the Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran Division, and Adarsh Swaika, Joint Secretary for the Eurasia Division in the Ministry of External Affairs.
New Delhi: India will join nine countries and the Taliban in Moscow Wednesday to figure out the way forward for Afghanistan, especially human rights and aid, more than two months after the radical Islamist group took control of the war-torn country. New Delhi, sources said, is participating in the meeting to understand how regional countries plan to deal with the Taliban dispensation going forward. Participating in the meeting is not recognition of the Taliban government, the sources said. This will be the second time Indian representatives will be interacting with the Taliban since Kabul fell on 15 August. That month, India’s Ambassador to Qatar Deepak Mittal had held talks with senior Taliban leader Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai. The nine other countries are hosts Russia (host), China, Pakistan, Iran, the five Central Asian nations of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

The plan would work by making the larger corporations as well as the wealthiest paying their share which is due and hence making the tax code fairer. Pyongyang unveiled the missile in January, describing it as “the world’s most powerful weapon”. It comes weeks after South Korea unveiled a similar weapon of its own. North Korea has carried out a flurry of missile tests in recent weeks, including of what it said were hypersonic and long-range weapons. Some of these tests violate strict international sanctions. The country is specifically prohibited by the United Nations from testing ballistic missiles as well as nuclear weapons. The UN considers ballistic missiles to be more threatening than cruise missiles because they can carry more powerful payloads, have a longer range and can fly faster.

Aim is to make them self-sufficient
Perturbed by young musicians turning to other means to make an income during the pandemic, Vishal Dadlani offers helping hand with scholarship

Often more glamorous than the celebs she interviewed on Simi Garewal with Rendezvous, few would believe that the star of movies like Mera Naam Joker and Karz, in fact, had her roots in the Bengali avant-garde classics like Padatik and Aranyer Din Ratri.
usician Vishal Dadlani envisioned a way of reaching out to the affected. “Established names of the music industry need to encourage new talent. Affected [artistes] are not only lacking opportunities, but are also forced to find work in unrelated spheres to support their families,” says the singercomposer, who is planning to create a scholarship programme that will offer help to at least 50 musicians, every year. “It will provide a sense of security, and enable them to get back on their feet. The aim is to make them self-sufficient, and then sustain themselves. I want to reach out to artistes belonging to different genres of music,” he says, without spelling out further details. Dadlani, who returns as judge of the new season of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, says that while YouTube and social media have given budding singers a chance to showcase their talent, “you have to be good, to get noticed”. It is with this reality show that he began his journey in television in 2007, along with collaborator Shekhar Ravjiani. Another stint followed in 2010. “It’s homecoming after 11 years. Sa Re Ga Ma Pa pioneered the concept of music reality shows in India 25 years ago. I have judged other shows, but the lehja of this one is distinct; it is rooted in Indian culture.” Dadlani considers music reality shows a stepping stone in a singer’s career; one that brings them attention and admiration. “The audience wants to hear their voice and know them [better]. This is why their life story is weaved in. Even international labels market stories of their artistes.” Dadlani quit the last season of Indian Idol — its 12th — mid-way, after the second wave forced a change in shooting location. “Things are better now with everyone being fully vaccinated, and well aware of the precautions that need to be taken.”
Word from the wise
n the wake of Aryan Khan’s arrest in a drugs-related case on October 2 and the media circus that followed, a newsworthy clip from father Shah Rukh Khan’s older TV interview instantly went viral. This was truly what you’d call a ‘blast from the past.’ Or more accurately, ‘past that comes back to bite you.’ In the interview, King Khan, flanked by his gracious wife Gauri, is seen irreverently declaring that when Aryan turns “three or four years old he can run after girls… he can do drugs.” Young and reckless, SRK may have been simply working his charm but viewed today in the controversial light the clip was used in, you can’t see the humour as much as the horror.

t the turn of the millennium, the ‘woman in white’, as the media labelled her thanks to her sartorial preference for Nargis-like pristine blanche, transformed the otherwise tedious TV talk show format with Rendezvous with Simi Garewal. It may have inspired Karan Johar’s news-making Koffee with Karan. Most of her interviews with bigwigs from all walks of life grabbed attention and remained in circulation long after they were telecast. lways a fashionable belle, she conducted herself with grace and poise in her interactions with the celebs. She got Rekha to talk candidly about her relationship with Amitabh Bachchan. (“I have yet to come across a single man, woman, child who can help but fall completely, passionately, insanely, desperately, hopelessly in love with him”).
he AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa opened up to her about MGR. (“After Mother died, he replaced her in my life”). One of her favourites, Dev Anand held forth on his life, show business and secret marriage to Kalpana Kartik. (“The cameraman of Taxi Driver noticed the ring on her finger in continuity, he said it was not there”). She even drew out the normally reticent Ratan Tata, perhaps because, as we learnt later, the two were once romantically involved. (“There are many times I feel lonely for not having a wife or family”).

“We are here because of my team; those who believed in us and supported us,” said Arvin Shah, DETROIT, MI– Sky Bird Travel & Tours, a leading airline consolidator headquartered in Detroit, is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year. Being able to land on this milestone after a
global pandemic – the travel industry’s hardest-hit since 9/11 – makes this an extremely special occasion for Sky Bird and its team members as the company reflects on its decades of success and challenges with gratitude. “We are here because of my team; those who believed in us and supported us,” said Arvin Shah, Founder and CEO of Sky Bird. Shah conceived the idea for Sky Bird in the early seventies while working part-time at a travel agency at his alma mater, Wayne State University. He launched Sky Bird’s first office in 1976 in downtown Detroit and has since opened nine more offices nationwide plus three internationally. Sky Bird began serving travel agents by connecting them with low airfare from its 90+ airline partners. Staying on top of advances in technology, Sky Bird grew to assist agents in every aspect of their business like itinerary planning, large group bookings, and providing an unparalleled booking solution with its WINGS Booking Engine – a product that has placed Sky Bird ahead of its competitors in service and technology.

All Municipal Workers Including NYPD and FDNY Face COVID Vaccine Mandate

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the 46,000 remaining unvaccinated city workers will receive a $500 bonus for getting their first dose NEW YORK, NY — All New York City municipal workers must get a coronavirus vaccine by Oct. 29 or else be placed on unpaid leave, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced. “My goal is to end the COVID era once and for all,” he said Wednesday. The vaccine mandate is an effort to get the remaining 46,000 unvaccinated city workers — large swaths of whom are NYPD and FDNY — to get their shots and protect the public, de Blasio said Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “Our police officers, our EMTs, our

firefighters, all our public employees, a lot of whom come in very close contact with their fellow New Yorkers, they need to be safe, their families need to be safe, but we also need to reassure all New Yorkers that if you’re working with a public employee, they’re vaccinated, everyone’s going to be safe,” de Blasio said. Workers who get their shots at city-run vaccination sites will get a $500 bonus until the mandate takes effect Oct. 29 at 5 p.m. De Blasio framed the bonus as a measure of appreciation for what city workers have
done to help through the pandemic. “This is out of respect for the people who have done so much for us,” he said. The mandate includes correction officers, but they won’t have to get shots until Dec. 1 as city officials work to address a staffing crisis at Rikers Island, de Blasio said. De Blasio for weeks hinted that a wide vaccination mandate for municipal workers could be imminent, especially after the city prevailed in court battles over similar rules for educators and health care workers. Vaccination rates among city departments have been all over the map. The two with mandates — the Department of Education and Health + Hospitals — have 96 percent and 95 percent vaccination rates, respectively, officials said. But NYPD’s and FDNY’s vaccination rates as of last week stood at 69 percent and 59 percent, respectively, according to the mayor’s office. Department of Correction has the lowest rate at 50 percent, data shows. The announcement drew a quick response from Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch. “Now that the city has moved to unilaterally impose a mandate, we will proceed with legal action to protect our members’ rights,” Lynch said in a statement. But other city leaders just as quickly endorsed the mandate. Council Member Mark Levine called it a “bold policy” that will help protect the city. “With the weather getting colder, there is a real risk that cases can start increasing again,” he said.

Hyderabad: The increasing use of technology in day to day policing is one factor that has kept the Hyderabad City Police stay ahead of its counterparts. A look at the adoption of various technological applications, for crime detection and prevention and also to deliver services to the public, shows that the City Police is moving forward in leveraging web-based and state of art mobile technologies as tools in improving the operational efficiency of the force. One major step was bringing in facilities that cut down on the need of the public to visit police stations. Mee-Seva services offered by the police to facilitate citizens obtaining missing documents or lost certificates in a hassle-free manner was one. From January 2018 till October 19 this year, a total of 2,27,319 applications were received, out of which 2,26,969 were addressed, officials said, adding that apart from this, the police was also following the standards set by the State government for the ease of doing business.

Telangana CM calls for meeting today HiIndia Newsdesk
Those set to attend the meeting include Home Minister Mehmood Ali, Excise Minister T Srinivas Goud, Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar, Home, and Excise departments' Chief Secretaries, DGP Mahender Reddy, Police Commissioners, and senior officials from the State STF on Drugs wing.
Hitting out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for keeping “quiet” on the rising fuel prices and Chinese “intrusion” in Indian territory, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi here alleged that Modi is afraid of talking about China. The Hyderabad MP also said targeted civilian killings was going on in Kashmir due to failure of the BJP-led central government. “The Prime Minister never speaks on two things–rise in petrol and diesel prices and on China which has entered our country and is sitting inside. The prices have skyrocketed but the Prime Minister does not speak anything,” the All India Majils-e-Ittehadul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief said while addressing a public meeting here on Monday night. “And now China has entered and sitting inside our country. When Pakistan did Pulwama (attack) then Modi had said ‘ghar mein ghus ke marenge’ (will hit them inside their home) but now China has entered and sitting in India but he is not doing anything. India’s Prime Minister is afraid of talking about China,” Owaisi alleged. He further said “Nine of our soldiers were killed (in Jammu and Kashmir recently) and on October 24 there is a T20 match between India and Pakistan (India’s upcoming T20 World Cup game against Pakistan)”. “Modi ji…nine of our soliders were killed and will you play T20? Pakistan is playing T20 in Kashmir with lives of Indians. Poor workers from Bihar are getting killed and targeted killing is happening. What is the IB (Intelligence Bureau) and Amit Shah (Union Home Minister) doing. What is the Intelligence doing in Kashmir,” Owaisi asked. “Weapons are coming and terrorists are coming from Pakistan and will you play match,” he said, adding what is happening in Kashmir is the failure of the BJP-led central government, which, he claimed, does not have a policy to deal with terrorism.
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has called for a high-level meeting with police and excise department officials Wednesday to formulate a strategy to control smuggling of narcotic drugs through the state. Those set to attend the meeting include Home Minister Mehmood Ali, Excise Minister T Srinivas Goud, Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar, Home, and Excise departments’ Chief Secretaries, DGP Mahender Reddy, Police Commissioners, and senior officials from the State STF on Drugs wing. The CM has sought reports from district excise officials on the existing situation and the measures taken so far. The meeting will draw an action plan to prevent youth from falling into the trap of drug abuse, and rehabilitation of victims. It will also discuss illicit liquor sale in the state. Ganja recovered from several districts of Telangana has been traced back to Araku Valley on Andhra-Odisha border where its cultivation is rampant, said sources. Past Sunday, alleged smugglers fired at an undercover police team from Telangana’s Nalgonda district during an operation. One person was injured in the firing when the forces retaliated. Telangana Police is forming special teams to conduct operations to break smuggling networks.

Take antibiotics only as prescribed
Don’t smoke
Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest public health threats in our generation. When antibiotics lose their power, bacterial infections become harder to treat, leading to higher medical costs, prolonged hospital stays, and increased mortality. Antibiotics are losing their power because of misuse and overuse in humans and animals. Make sure you only take antibiotics if prescribed by a qualified health professional. And once prescribed, complete the treatment days as instructed. Never share antibiotics.
Smoking tobacco causes NCDs such as lung disease, heart disease and stroke. Tobacco kills not only the direct smokers but even non-smokers through second-hand exposure. Currently, there are around 15.9 million Filipino adults who smoke tobacco but 7 in 10 smokers are interested or plan to quit.
Improve Eyesight
One of the best ways to improve eyesight is consuming enough vitamin A which can be found in foods like carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach.
You can also protect your eyesight from further damage by wearing sunglasses or protective safety goggles if you work in a high-risk environment. If you want to improve your eyesight, take a break from your screen every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds. Wearing glasses or contacts can help you see more clearly, but there are other important ways to improve your vision. Many parts of your lifestyle can affect your eyesight, including what you eat, what you wear, and whether or not you smoke.
1. Make sure you are getting enough vitamin A "Most of us have heard that carrots are good for our eyes. The main reason for that is carrots are high in the vitamin A family," says Sunir J. Garg, MD, an eye doctor and professor of ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University. Getting enough vitamin A is vital for your eyesight because it helps your retina, which is the tissue at the back of your eye, communicate with your brain, Garg says.
2. Quit smoking "Cigarette smoke, as well as all of the toxins in it, are bad for every part of our bodies," Garg says. In fact, smoking can damage your retina and cause macular degeneration, a condition that can make your vision blurry or create dark spots in your vision.
This is because smoking can reduce the amount of oxygen that gets to your retina and damage the tiny blood vessels in your eye. "We know that smoking is the main modifiable risk factor for macular degeneration," Garg says, adding that it's never too late to quit smoking and prevent retina damage.
3. Wear sunglasses When you go out in the sun without sunglasses, your eyes may be exposed to high levels of ultraviolet (UV) light. This can damage your cornea, the clear layer of tissue that sits over your pupil. High exposure to sunlight can also cause some people to develop skin cancers in the delicate skin around the eyes, and occasionally on the surface of the eye, Garg says. But not all sunglasses are helpful since some don't filter UV light. In fact, wearing sunglasses without a filter can actually be worse than no sunglasses at all.
4. Follow the 20-20-20 rule Looking at screens for long periods of time can put a heavy strain on your
eyes. It won't cause permanent damage, but too much screen time can make your eyes feel achy or cause temporary blurred vision. This is because you blink less often while looking at screens, which can cause your eyes to dry out and feel uncomfortable. It's also hard for your eyes to continuously look at the bright light of a screen and focus on small objects like text. Experts recommend using a method called the 20-20-20 rule whenever you use a close-up screen like a phone or laptop to help manage eye strain. Every 20 minutes, take a quick break and look away from your screen. During this break, find an object at least 20 feet away from you to look at. Focus on the object for at least 20 seconds before returning to your screen.
5. Wear protective eyewear like safety glasses Many different jobs can put you at risk for eye injuries, but wearing protective equipment can help keep your eyes and vision safe. Experts estimate that wearing proper eye protection can prevent 90% of eye injuries at work.
You should wear protective goggles, face shields, or other equipment if you work with any of these substances: * Chemicals * Airborne particles of wood, metal, or other materials * Radiation, including UV radiation or lasers * Blood or bodily fluids Refer to your workplace regulations for the proper equipment you should use to guard your eyes. If you use any of these materials outside of your job for cleaning or building, use the same caution and make sure you have your own protective gear.
6. Regulate blood sugar levels and manage diabetes Diabetes can pose a serious risk to your eyesight because it weakens blood vessels throughout your body, including those in your retina, Garg says. "Over time, those blood vessels become so damaged that they no longer carry enough oxygen and nutrients to nourish the retina, and some of those retinal cells become damaged and die," Garg says.
Health Tip: Why Wear Sunglasses? * They protect your eyes against the sun's UV rays, which could otherwise lead to cataracts. * They protect against "blue light" from the solar spectrum, which could increase your risk of macular degeneration. * They lead to improved and more comfortable vision from not having to squint.
