Bob Lee dead: Cash App founder dies after San Francisco stabbing
HiIndia Newsdesk
The founder of multibillion-dollar tech company Cash App, Bob Lee, was fatally stabbed near San Francisco city centre on Tuesday, his family has said. Police found a 43-year-old man with stab wounds and treated him before he later died in hospital. His father, Rick Lee, confirmed his son - who was also the ex-chief technology officer at Square - had been killed. San Francisco officials have been criticised for their response to a wave of violent crime in recent years. The latest crime data suggests the city is one of the most-dangerous in the US. Police officers responded to reports of the stabbing on Tuesday at around 02:35 local time (10:35 BST). The San Francisco Standard viewed CCTV footage that shows Mr Lee walking down a deserted alleyway, seemingly looking for help. Mr Lee is seen stumbling towards a parked car and lifting up his shirt to reveal his wound, but the vehicle drives off before the tech entrepreneur falls to the ground. Police found Mr Lee unconscious in the Rincon Hill neighbourhood with two stab wounds to his chest, and started to administer aid before rushing him to hospital, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Mr Lee’s father posted a message on Facebook on Wednesday saying: “I just lost my best friend, my son Bob Lee when he lost his life on the street in San Francisco early Tuesday morning.”

The foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia - two bitter rivals in the Middle East - have held talks for the first time since 2016. Saudi’s al-Ekhbariya TV aired a brief video showing Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud and Hossein Amir-Abdollahian greeting each other in China. Last month, the two nations agreed to restore diplomatic relations during lower-level talks also in China.
Saudi Arabia cut ties in 2016 after crowds stormed its embassy in Tehran. This followed Riyadh’s execution of a prominent Shia Muslim cleric. Tensions between the Sunni-led Saudi Arabia and Shia-led Iran have since often been high. They regard each other as a threatening power that seeks regional dominance. They also support rival sides across the Middle East, including in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq - and most overtly in Yemen.
South Africa ends national state of disaster on electricity HiIndia Newsdesk
Johannesburg, (IANS) South Africa has ended the national state of disaster due to the lack of electricity, which was first imposed in February, with immediate effect, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Thembi Nkadimeng announced. The government’s decision to terminate the national state of disaster is motivated by the fact that a number of measures are being taken to achieve the objective of relieving the impact of the severe energy constraints on the economy and society,
Nkadimeng said at a media briefing. The goal of declaring the national state of disaster at that time was to make sure that quick actions will be taken to lessen the effects of load shedding on sensitive industries like the health sector and small companies, Xinhua news agency quoted the Minister as saying. Since February, the government has implemented extensive regulations that outline the duties of various state organs to lessen the effects of extreme load shedding and stop the worsening of power supply shortages, she said.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said a proper investigation is needed to get answers on the tragedy on the US-Canada border that resulted in the death of eight people from two families of Indian and Romanian descent and cautioned against speculating on what could have contributed it. Bodies of eight persons were recovered later from the marsh on the riverbank near Akwesasne, a community which straddles Quebec, Ontario and New York state.

Reserve Bank keeps repo rate unchanged at 6.5%

The Reserve Bank of India on Thursday hit the pause button and decided to keep key benchmark policy rate at 6.5 per cent even as inflation is trending above its tolerance level. The rate hike has been paused after six consecutive rate increases aggregating to 250 basis points since May 2022. Announcing the bi-monthly monetary policy, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will not hesitate to take action in the future. While keeping the interest rate intact, Das said core inflation remains sticky. Core inflation generally refers to inflation in manufactured goods. Retail inflation in February stood at 6.44 per cent compared to 6.52 per cent in the previous month. MPC takes into account retail inflation numbers for setting the interest rates. However, inflation is expected to moderate in the current fiscal.
New Delhi, April 6 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday that India’s development journey is inspired by Lord Hanuman’s life. He stated that the BJP works with the same inspiration and people have already started saying that there is no one to defeat the party in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, ‘which is true’. On the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti, Modi attacked the opposition parties and said: “When Hanuman ji had to face demons, he became equally tough. Similarly, BJP becomes more determined when it comes to corruption, family rule and law and order.” He virtually addressed the BJP workers
and leaders on the party’s 44th Foundation Day, Modi said: “Lord Hanuman’s birth is being celebrated all over the country today. His life and the major events that took place in his life inspire us to this day.”
He further stated: “Kavan so kaj kathin jag mahi, jo nahi hoye taat tumha pahi!” (Which roughly translates to: “There is no such work which Pawan’s son, Hanuman cannot do.”) Modi added: “Hanuman ji has immense power but he can use this power only when his self-doubt is removed. India was in the same situation before 2014, but today, like Bajrangbali ji, India has realised the hidden powers within itself and is more capable than ever to overcome and face huge challenges.” PM Modi advised the party workers to work on the vision of a developed India on two important milestones -- 50 years of BJP and 100 years of the country’s Independence in 2047.

New Delhi: Opposition parties only talk about social justice but it is the BJP that toils for helping each Indian, Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed on Thursday, setting the tone for the party’s 2024 national election campaign at an event to mark the party’s 44th foundation day. “The opposition is very desperate but no one can defeat the BJP in 2024,” he said, once again referring to the slogans of “Modi Teri Kabr Khudegi” (Modi, Your Grave Will Be Dug) chanted at a recent demonstration by the Congress over a police case against one of its leaders. The BJP is determined to fight corruption, nepotism and law and order challenges in the country, he said, adding
“BJP has resolve, ‘Can do’ attitude like Lord Hanuman, determined to fight corruption,” PM Modi at the party’s Foundation Day event. that it draws inspiration from Lord Hanuman, the Hindu god who is revered for his devotion, strength and courage. “Today India, like Lord Hanuman, is much more prepared in fighting challenges. Our party takes inspiration from Hanumanji. We can be tough at times like Lord Hanuman, but we are also compassionate and humble,” PM Modi said. He said that the BJP has a resolve and a ‘can do’ attitude like Lord Hanuman and the party’s political culture is to have big dreams and put all efforts to fulfil them, unlike the Congress and its allies who have a “small thinking” and are mired in corruption, casteism and family rule.

Telangana BJP Chief In Police Custody, Party Says “Illegal Arrest” HiIndia Newsdesk
Hyderabad: Bandi Sanjay Kumar, the president of the BJP in Telangana, was taken into custody by the police on Tuesday night, setting off a political firestorm and drawing criticism from the party’s top leadership in New Delhi. Mr Kumar, a member of parliament from Karimnagar district, was taken into custody from his home without any explanation, according to his party colleagues. He was later moved to various police stations in different districts, raising questions about his whereabouts and safety. Calling it a case of “illegal arrest”, the BJP also filed a petition in the Telangana High Court on Wednesday, seeking to know the grounds for Mr Kumar’s detention and his current location. In a First Information Report (FIR) released amid the spiralling outcry, the police said Mr Kumar had been taken into “preventive detention”. He was later arrested over the leak of secondary school exam papers, a charge that his party has dismissed as baseless and politically motivated.
Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who represents the Karimnagar constituency in the Lok Sabha, was taken away from his residence by a police team around 11 pm. The police action came amid heightened tensions between the BJP and the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi, or BRS, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state on Saturday. PM Modi is expected to inaugurate several
development projects and address a public rally. Mr Kumar, who has been vocal in his criticism of the BRS government and its chief minister, K Chandrasekhar Rao, was picked up from his residence late on Tuesday
night. Video footage showed him being dragged by policemen and forced into a van outside. His supporters tried to resist the arrest and clashed with the police. The BJP’s national leaders condemned the detention of Mr Kumar and demanded his immediate release. G. Kishan Reddy, a union minister and a senior BJP leader from Telangana, called it an “undemocratic” act that violated Mr Kumar’s fundamental rights. Amit Malviya, the head of the BJP’s information technology department, said on Twitter that the arrest was an attempt by Mr Rao to “intimidate” the opposition and “muzzle” dissent. “In a midnight operation, Telangana police has arrested BJP state President Bandi Sanjay Kumar on fabricated charges of being involved in a secondary school paper leak. This won’t end well for KCR,” Mr Malviya wrote, using Mr Rao’s initials. Hundreds of BJP workers staged protests outside various police stations where Mr Kumar was reportedly taken. They raised slogans against Mr Rao and the BRS government and accused them of misusing their power to suppress the opposition.

COMMUNITY NEWS
They say, Marriages are made in Heaven. But perhaps in the current age, it may be more apt to say that while marriages are definitely made in heaven, the connections are created at a convention! As Spring begins to bring blooms to Chicago, it may be time for love or a special relationship to also blossom in the lives of 1000 lucky men and women who are coming together at The Mohan Matchmaking Convention this weekend. The unique event, supported and conceptualized by Anip Patel, CEO and Founder of CaPatel Investments is an honest attempt to give young South Asian men and women a fair chance to meet other singles that share similar cultures, thoughts, values and dreams to forge friendships or relationships that may last a lifetime. As a person of Indian heritage living and working in the United States, Patel recognizes the need for creative spaces where diversity is accepted and celebrated. As an entrepreneur and an investor he has seen how lack of diverse representation can not only affect businesses but also has a deep impact on personal lives too. Patel says, “Finding someone special is always a tough task. And in our culture not everyone is using other resources like dating apps. We decided to curate an event that bridges the void most young South Asians experience once they reach that stage where they are looking for a lasting relationship.
Why Desi Dating
Numerous relationship surveys, expert talks and counseling sessions often point out one single thing – couples who stick together are often the ones that have a shared vision, outlook or values in life. Living with a desi heritage in America or anywhere in the West, sometimes poses a unique challenge of finding or meeting fellow desis who may be a potential soulmate

you have been looking to spend a lifetime with. So instead of leading your life in the hope of a co-incidence that connects you with a like-minded individual from a similar heritage, the Mohan Matchmaking Convention believes in creating circumstances that bring you closer to a pool of fellow desi singles to interact, connect and network with. But this is no ordinary meet-up; the creators of the event
believe in giving a luxurious, larger than life backdrop to what may turn out to me the moment you have been waiting for all your life. An excellent initiative that integrates diversity and stresses why it is important to create meetings such as these, Patel and his team have given $1 million in support to the Mohan Matchmaking Convention. The concept behind this convention while helping singles inch closer to finding their partners also supports a greater cause. 100 percent of proceeds from the event will help organize Samuh Lagan in India. Samuh Lagan is a traditional practice of a mass marriage where hundreds of couples from less fortunate backgrounds are wed to each other in a single ceremony. The practice doesn’t end with a ceremony but the couples are also provided with gifts that eases them in charting their new lives together.
The Schedule

On Wednesday, the region can expect an onshore flow, which will bring along fog, drizzle, and cooler temperatures that will persist throughout the day. On Thursday, temperatures are expected to reach near-record levels, with some areas seeing temperatures in the 70s and even low 80s. Stay tuned to Storm Team 4 for the latest weather updates. Over “Misuse Of Central Agencies” HiIndia Newsdesk
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to consider a petition by 14 opposition parties that accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government of abusing its power and using central investigating agencies to harass and intimidate its political rivals. The petition, filed by senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi on behalf of the opposition parties, claimed that there was a “drastic and exponential increase” in the number of cases registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against opposition leaders since 2014 when PM Modi came to power.
Mr Singhvi cited statistics to show that the ED had registered 6 times more cases in the last seven years than in the previous decade, but had a conviction rate of only 23 per cent. He also alleged that 95 per cent of the ED and CBI cases were against opposition leaders from across the country and that this was
a clear indication of political vendetta and bias. However, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud expressed doubts about the validity and feasibility of the petition. He asked Mr Singhvi whether he was seeking immunity for opposition parties from investigation and prosecution, and whether they had any special rights as citizens. Mr Singhvi clarified that he was not asking for any blanket protection or exemption for opposition leaders, but only for a fair and impartial application of the law. He said that the government was misusing its agencies to weaken and demoralise the opposition and that this was detrimental to democracy and the rule of law.

ctress Pooja Dey, who made her debut with reality show ‘Dating in the Dark’, was further seen in the erotic web series ‘Gandii Baat Season 5’, in which she played the character of Nandini, a lesbian. The actress has spoken about being typecast in a bold zone post that series and how difficult it was for her to come out of that. Talking about the same, she said: “No matter how much everyone denies, but yes, ‘typecasting’ still happens in our industry. Post ‘Gandii Baat’, I only received offers for bold and sleazy content. It wasn’t like I didn’t want to do bold shows, but the main parameter, which is the story, was missing from those projects. I was also getting a good amount of money, but how can I do a character or project which doesn’t seem correct to me?” “I kind of got typecast after that project and coming out of it was really hard. I did lose a lot of time in my career due to this. Being an actor, I want to see myself exploring and experimenting with the character or content. I can’t stick to the same zone of the character and do similar projects. ‘Newness’, for me, plays a crucial role. I have no issues with playing bold characters, but they should look authentic and valid.
Vikramaditya Motwane on exploring golden era of Hindi cinema in Jubilee
S
ome stories are real and others just “urban legends” in Jubilee, says director Vikramaditya Motwane about his 10-part series that serves as an interesting guide to the early days of Hindi cinema. Jubilee, set during the Partition and the decades after that, chronicles the lives of a studio boss, his movie-star wife, his trusted aide, a rising star, a nautch girl and a refugee. According to Motwane, who co-created the Prime Video show with Soumik Sen, it all started as a small idea about exploring the power dynamics and the drama of those early years of cinema. “But it’s taken a good five-six years for that one idea to end up becoming a pitch and then a series… It’s been quite a journey,” Motwane told PTI in an interview. “It’s the stories you hear… There is some truth, some gossip and everything put into this. Today (who’s to say) what’s true, what’s made up and what’s an urban legend that’s taken a life of its own to become stories that we hear almost 70-75 years after the era… It’s a wonderful way of presenting it to the audience,” he said. The first part of the series, featuring a stellar cast in Prosenjit Chatterjee, Aditi Rao Hydari, Aparshakti Khurana, Wamiqa Gabbi, Sidhant Gupta, Nandish Sandhu, and Ram Kapoor, will premiere on April 7, followed by the second part, also consisting of five episodes, releasing on April 14. The challenges in recreating the era within a budget were aplenty but fun for the director, known for projects such as Udaan, Lootera, Trapped and Sacred Games series.
‘I’d be sorted in Rs 25 per day’: Sharad Kelkar Sharad Kelkar recalled his early days as a struggler in Mumbai, and revealed that he used to make Rs 2750 per month at a gym

Ajay Devgn starrer Bholaa is clearly not living up to its expectations at the box office. We know, it’s quite early to say this but considering the film is mounted on a huge scale, it can’t afford to perform with a big dip in the collection right on day 2. Yes, the biggie has dropped today, and the fall is a bit high even if one considers it was a working day. Helmed by Ajay Devgn himself, the film is an official remake of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Kaithi starring Karthi. As the original one is considered a masterpiece and has been watched by many already in the Hindi belt, Ajay’s remake is going through a lot of comparisons. This is leading to unnecessary negativity despite the film being a good offering. Bholaa opened with 11.20 crores. One expected the start of at least 15 crores considering the holiday factor and Ajay’s Drishyam 2 was a huge success.
ctor Sharad Kelkar recalled his struggles as an aspiring actor in the film industry, after moving to Mumbai in the year 2002. Sharad had participated in Grasim Mr India, and subsequently worked as a model, and in ad films. He later became a household name on TV, and then moved to films. But there was a time when he was having a hard time making ends meet. In an appearance on Cyrus Broacha’s podcast, Sharad broke down his expenses on food, and recalled being excited when he was offered Rs 5000 for a fashion show. He said that he first went to Mumbai on a vacation to visit his cousin, and ended up getting a call for a fashion show when he was in town. He said, “I used to stay with nine guys in one room, in Bazaar Road, Bandra. There used to be this Rajasthani hotel, which provided a dabba service, basically. They used to sell a chapati for Rs 2, and we used to get some eggs. I’d arranged for a gas cylinder, and my deal was simple: four eggs and two rotis, in the morning, and in the evening. That’s it. I would be sorted in Rs 25.’ Asked about alcohol, Sharad said that it was a ‘privilege’, and probably a once-in-three-months situation. “We used to party only when we’d get some work, like some ad or a photoshoot. Otherwise, it was a tough time. But things got better when TV started.” Sharad said that he used to earn around Rs 2750 per month at the gym he used to work at back then, and when he was offered Rs 5000 to walk the runway for ‘three minutes’ at a fashion show, he lapped it up. “I felt something about Mumbai, and that’s how I started,” he said.

The actor said, “To the Indian diaspora, Bollywood provides a connection with their memories back home. Music unites us all and this is the sentiment that we are celebrating and showing respect to through ‘Disco Dancer- The Musical’. Long before musicals, our cinema was pioneering the concept of telling a story through song and dance. We did it first”. He further mentioned, “I have grown up listening to this music, idolising the heroes of that era and for me and everyone else, this will be an experience of pure nostalgia. Our song and dance routines have been mocked but now people are realising their importance and the happiness they have brought to millions... Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani’s ‘Kahani’ khatam in Kashmir
Last year, when most Hindi films were tanking at the box office, Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani struck gold with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. The two are hoping to recreate the magic this year with Satyaprem Ki Katha, which marks the Bollywood debut of Marathi film director Sameer Vidwans. We hear the director is now ready to call action on the film’s final schedule in Kashmir. While Vidwans has headed to the Valley, the actors are expected to reach today for the weeklong stint.
Chitrangda Singh prefers merit over mass production
Hardly anybody in the industry would refute that OTT platforms have brought unprecedented opportunities and given wings to brave stories. Chitrangda Singh, who has had web offerings in Modern Love: Mumbai (2022) and the latest Gaslight, admits that the medium’s benefits are many. However, the actor also has a word of caution — in an attempt to meet the audience’s increased demand for content, she hopes that creators don’t end up compromising on quality. “OTT has been a breeding ground for talented writers, directors, and actors. But since there is such a high need for content, I wonder whether people are wanting to take risks. The demand is so high that sometimes it works against the idea of taking the effort and pain to think differently. It affects the quality,” she explains. Is that the reason Singh hasn’t signed a series yet? The actor admits that she has received multiple offers, but they haven’t struck a chord with her. “When it comes to series, I haven’t found the right script. I have been offered quite a few, a lot of them [being] official remakes. But the writing gets so diluted by the time it is adapted. For a series, the writing needs to be top-notch to engage the audiences. That said, it’s about time I did a series.”

In a regular press conference, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, “Zangnan (Arunachal Pradesh) is part of China’s territory. Global Pharma: FDA says India firm linked to US eye drop deaths broke safety norms
The Indian manufacturer of eye drops linked to three deaths and serious infections in the US violated several safety norms, the country’s top regulator has said.

February after a recommendation from the FDA. The FDA had also stopped imports of the products. The eye drops - made in India by Global Pharma and imported to the US under two brand names, EzriCare Artificial Tears and Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Tears - were linked to a deadly outbreak of drug-resistant infections in the US. In March, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified 68 patients across 16 states with a rare strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which can cause serious infections, especially in
immunocompromised people. The drug-resistant strain had never been found in the country before the latest outbreak. In addition to the deaths, eight patients suffered vision loss, and four had their eye surgically removed, the BBC reported in March. “To the greatest extent possible, we have been contacting customers to advise them against continued use of the product,” EzriCare Artificial Tears said on its website in February . The company said it marketed the eye drops, but had no role in the “actual manufacturing” of the product. While the product recall was initially for the eye drops called EzriCare Artificial Tears Lubricant and Delsam Pharma Artificial Tears Lubricant, it was later expanded to include an eye ointment marketed by Delsam Pharma as well. The FDA conducted an 11-day inspection of the Global Pharma plant in India from 20 February, and said in its report that it observed several violations related to sterilisation and hygiene. This included a “black, brown coloured greasy deposit” on a bowl; several parts of the sterile manufacturing area such as doors and handles were not cleaned properly. The FDA report also said that surfaces that came into contact with the drug
packaging “were not cleaned, sanitised, decontaminated, or sterilised”. The BBC has emailed Global Pharma for comment. On Monday, The New York Times reported that the CDC was concerned the bacteria could gain a foothold in the US healthcare system. “I think we are going to see the impact of this play out over the course of months to years,” Maroya Walters, lead investigator for the CDC’s antimicrobial resistance team, told the NYT. The CDC had earlier advised anyone who used the recalled products and was experiencing symptoms to contact a doctor. The symptoms included yellow, green, or clear discharge from the eye, discomfort or pain, redness, blurry vision and increased sensitivity to light. In recent months, many Indian firms have come under scrutiny for the quality of their drugs, with experts raising concerns about the manufacturing practices used to make these medicines. In March, India’s drug regulator cancelled the manufacturing licence of Marion Biotech, whose cough syrups were linked to 18 child deaths in Uzbekistan. The World Health Organization also issued an alert last October linking four Indian-made cough syrups to child deaths in The Gambia. India later said that the medicines complied with specifications when tested at home, but the WHO responded that it stood by “the action taken”.

It is known from the village that Praveenbhai’s son and daughter, who also died in the incident, were engaged. Praveenbhai’s wife’s family is from Pamol village, and his own parents have already passed away. Ashvinbhai Chowdhury, the brother of the deceased, is the Upsarpanch of Manekpura village. However, there is suspicion that an agent may be involved in this case as well. There are discussions going on that the Chaudhary family may have given 56 lakh rupees to someone to help them infiltrate into America through Canada. USCIS Removes 60-Day Time Limit For Civil Surgeon Endorsements On Form I-693 HiIndia Newsdesk
WASHINGTON, DC- This change in policy by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) means that civil surgeons are no longer required to sign Form I-693, Report of Immigration Medical Examination and Vaccination Record, within 60 days of an individual applying for an immigration benefit. The previous requirement had been subject to a temporary waiver since December 9, 2021, and this policy update will allow USCIS to process cases with immigration medical examinations that would have otherwise been considered invalid.

FBI Trying To Recruit More Women In It’s Workforce

HOUSTON, TX- It seems that residents of Houston are facing an increase in their water and wastewater bills. The increase is a result of a combination of factors including inflationary index, population growth, and a city ordinance that adjusts prices for inflation annually through 2026. Some customers may see an increase of up to 17.5 percent in their water bills. The increase is intended to cover the cost of operating, maintaining, and repairing the water and wastewater system, debt service on the system’s bonds, protect the financial integrity of the system, and comply with bond covenants and other applicable laws.

The 60-day rule was intended to increase operational efficiency and reduce the need for updated forms, but in practice, it has caused confusion and resulted in the issuance of RFEs for otherwise valid forms. This change in policy will benefit applicants, civil surgeons, USCIS officers, federal partners, and other stakeholders by removing the confusing 60-day requirement. The updated Form I-693 has been approved by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and will be published in the USCIS policy manual.

ATLANTA, GA – The Federal Bureau of Investigation is actively recruiting more women to join their ranks. Currently, women make up close to 24% of the FBI’s agents, but the agency hopes to increase that number to 30% by the year 2030 with their “30 by 30” initiative. Special Agent in Charge of the Atlanta Field Office, Keri Farley, believes that having more women in law enforcement is crucial for the agency to better understand and relate to the
communities they serve. The percentage of women in state and local law enforcement is only 12% nationwide, so the FBI is actively trying to change the gender dynamics of the industry. The biggest challenge to increasing the number of women in law enforcement is getting them to apply, according to Supervisory Special Agent Marlo Graham. The FBI has been actively recruiting women from high schools and colleges, and other law enforcement agencies, such as the Atlanta Police and Emory University Police, have also taken the 30-by-30 pledge. While the image of men in dark suits and sunglasses may still dominate popular culture, women are in all roles at the FBI, including SWAT, cybersecurity, and firearms instruction. Agent Graham notes that times have changed since she first joined the agency 19 years ago, but there is still work to be done to ensure that law enforcement better reflects the communities they serve.

HEALTH
OBESITY What you need to know
O
besity is a chronic disease that affects millions of people worldwide and has become a major health problem. It has spread to almost every corner of the planet to the point that “[obesity] has grown to epidemic proportions,” says the World Health Organization (WHO). More than 5 million people die every year because of the diseases and harmful effects associated with obesity. By 2035, more than half of the world’s population, more than 4 billion people, could be obese or overweight, according to the World Obesity Atlas 2023.
What is obesity?
Obesity occurs when a person eats an excess of calories that the body converts into fat. This imbalance between the calories you take in and the calories you burn, — for example through exercise— can be caused by many reasons, including social, lifestyle, psychological, biological, and genetic factors antidepressants, can also cause weight gain or obesity.
Obesity is a complex disease that can occur at any age and affects adults and children alike. The World Health Organizations (WHO) defines obesity as “abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health.” As of 2016, 1.9 billion or 39% of adults worldwide, were overweight and 650 million or 13% were living with obesity. The proportion of adults with obesity has nearly tripled since 1980, according to the WHO’s Global Health Observatory. Children are not exempt — around 38 million children under 5 are overweight or obese, and more than 340 million children aged 5 to 19. In essence, obesity occurs when a person eats an excess of calories that the body converts into fat. This imbalance between the calories you take in and the calories you burn, — for example through exercise— can be caused by many reasons, including social, lifestyle, psychological, biological, and genetic factors.
What does obesity do to your body?
Obesity: Not an issue of self-control
Obesity is often determined by measuring a person’s body mass index (BMI) and diagnosed when a person’s BMI is above 30. A value above 25 indicates overweight, according to the WHO. The BMI is calculated by dividing the body weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters. You can calculate your BMI with the UK’s National Health Service BMI calculator. But the BMI is a contentious measure. It doesn’t take into account age, sex and which percentage of body weight is made up by muscle mass as compared to fat. For instance, a weightlifter with a lot of muscle mass can have a high BMI above 30 and not have excess fat. There are other tools that can more accurately measure the amount of fat, but they are not widely available. “The best way of measuring [body fat] is using magnetic resonance imaging [MRI],” Alexander Miras, professor of endocrinology at Ulster University in the UK, told DW. But MRIs are expensive and are mostly used to determine body fat content for research purposes. An excess of
Contrary to a still-widespread belief, obesity is not the result of a lack of willpower. “We know that appetite and satiety are inherited and that up to 70% of your weight is genetically determined. There is every reason to treat obesity as a chronic, relapsing disease,” John Wass, professor of endocrinology at Oxford University, told The Lancet. The factors responsible for obesity can be divided into two categories: Internal factors, such as a person’s biological and genetic make-up, and external factors, such as environmental and social conditions, — like your income, access to healthcare or access to safe outdoor areas where you can exercise. Genetics, lack of exercise, bad eating habits, psychological issues, health problems, social and economic conditions, drugs, pollutants, and more can all contribute to the development of obesity. Medical conditions like Cushing’s disease and certain medications, including steroids and some
Symptoms related to excess fat and body weight include difficulty doing physical activities, pain in different parts of the body and even osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease. Obesity can also make it difficult to breathe at night, a condition called sleep apnea. Obesity can cause type 2 diabetes, increase blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar, and lead to cardiovascular disease, like strokes and heart attacks due to the increasing buildup of fatty material in the arteries. Obesity has also been associated with certain types of cancers like endometrial, esophageal, liver, kidney, and colon, among others, and it can severely affect a person’s mental health, causing anxiety and low self-esteem, as well as increase the risk of depression.
How do you measure obesity?
abdominal fat is linked to higher health risks than fat in the rest of the body. Because of that, medical guidelines recommend looking at waist circumference, and not just BMI, when determining someone’s health.
How is obesity treated and prevented?
At the individual level, the best way to prevent obesity is to eat a balanced diet, with less fats and sugars and more fruit, vegetables grains and nuts. The other component is staying active: The WHO recommends about 20 minutes of exercise a day. But individual efforts can only fully work in conjunction with support on the policy and public health level. “If anything, there has been far too much emphasis on blame and personal responsibility, including from doctors,” Francesco Rubino, chair of metabolic and bariatric surgery at King’s College London, told The Lancet. Since obesity is a chronic disease, doctors should provide a long-term treatment plan that can include lifestyle modifications like changing eating habits, switching to a more balanced diet and changing how people move, like promoting physical activity. Regular follow-ups are important. Weight loss doesn’t have to be extreme at first. Studies have shown that even a 10% decrease in body weight can significantly reduce the risk of obesity-related risk factors, and that it can be achieved in 6 months with well-designed treatment programs. After that, more intense weight loss programs need to be discussed with your doctor
What drugs and surgeries are available?
If diet and exercise don’t work, there are few medications approved in the US to treat obesity that can help in addition to diet and exercise. But they come with potential side effects. Semaglutide, sold under the brand names Ozempic, Wegovy or Rybelsus, has been recently approved for weight loss treatment in the US and by the National Institue for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK, and might lead to more than a 10% weight loss in addition to diet and exercise. The drug has to be self-injected once a week, and can have side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation. Semaglutide reduces appetite by imitating the GLP-1 hormone that is released after we eat. For people with severe obesity, usually a BMI higher than 40, bariatric surgery such as a gastric bypass, may be an effective treatment for weight reduction and health improvement if dieting and exercise have failed. Since every case is different, it’s important to discuss benefits, risks and implications of the procedure with a doctor.
