Over 6 Lakh Indians Gave Up Citizenship Since 2017: Union Home Ministry HiIndia Newsdesk

in the 2016-20 period, 1,106 got it in 2016, 817 in 2017, 628 in 2018, 987 in 2019 and 639 in 2020, Union minister for state for home affairs Nityanand Rai said in a written reply. On the other hand, of the 6,07,650 who gave up their citizenship in the 2017-21 period, 1,33,049 gave it up in 2017, 1,34,561 in 2018, 1,44,017 in 2019, 85,248 in 2020 and 1,11,287 in the first nine months of this year.

Four of every 10 applicants received Indian citizenship

New Delhi: Over the last four years, from 2017 to September this year, 6,07,650 persons relinquished their Indian citizenship. On the other hand, just 4,177 persons were granted citizenship between 2016 and 2020, data from the Union home ministry has revealed. Simply put, for every one person who has been granted Indian citizenship in the past four years and more, 145 persons have forgone their citizenship. The above data was provided by the home ministry to the Lok Sabha in response to Congress MP from Kerala Hibi Eden’s query. Of the 4,177 people who were granted citizenship

According to the data furnished by the ministry, for nearly every 10 people who applied for Indian citizenship during the 2016-20 period, only four actually got it. The number of applicants was 2,262 in 2016, 855 in 2017 and 1,758 in 2018. Then it shot up sharply to 4,224 in 2019 but then fell to 1,546 in 2020. In all, 10,645 people applied for Indian citizenship during this five year period.

Most applications for citizenship came from Pakistan The maximum number of applications for Indian citizenship came from citizens of Pakistan. As many as 7,782 residents of that country applied for Indian citizenship between 2016-2020. There was a marked increase in the number of applications from Pakistanis in 2019 when they rose to 3,095 only to drop to the earlier levels the following year.

After Pakistan, most applications were received from the US (227), followed by Sri Lanka (205), Bangladesh (184), Nepal (167), Kenya (135), the UK (82), Iran (54) and Canada (44). People from the “stateless” category formed another large group of applicants with 452 applications. To a query by Eden on the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Indian Citizens (NRIC) and the progress made so far, the minister replied that CAA was notified on December 12, 2019 and came into force on January 10, 2020. He added that “the persons covered under the CAA may apply for citizenship after the rules are notified under the CAA”. As for the NRIC, he said the government had not taken any decision to prepare it at the national level.

Citizenship applications were invited in May 2021 under the 1955 Act

The rules for CAA haven’t been framed yet despite the fact that the Act concerned was enacted nearly two years ago. The CAA provides for a fast track route to citizenship for non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. In May this year, the Centre allowed Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Christians and Buddhists from these three countries, and who are residing in certain 13 districts of India, to apply for the host country’s citizenship. However, the applications were invited under the Citizenship Act of 1955 since the rules pertaining to the amended Act are yet to be finalised.

Business World Buy now pay later boom shows no signs of slowing this holiday season HiIndia Newsdesk

7% of shoppers said they will be using buy now, pay later as a payment method for holiday purchases this year, according to a CNBC/Momentive Small Business Survey. The buy now, pay later phenomenon is showing little signs of slowing down. Shoppers have flocked to the option over the last year as online shopping has surged amid the pandemic, benefiting fintech companies like Affirm, Klarna, and Square’s Afterpay, while also prompting other payment platforms like PayPal to move further in that direction and threatening banks and credit card companies.

Use of BNPL poised to grow this holiday season, according to a recent CNBC survey. Seven percent of shoppers said they will be using BNPL for holiday purchases this year, according to the CNBC/Momentive Small Business Survey for Small Business Saturday. The survey was conducted by Momentive from Nov. 10 to Nov. 12 and included 2,744 respondents. While that 7% still pares in comparison to other traditional payment methods – 55% of shoppers say that will use debit cards, 51% will pay with credit cards, and 43% say they will use cash – experts say that percentage could easily be doubled or tripled in the next year. “The important thing is not the 7% adoption number, but the fact that the number is growing,” said Lex Sokolin, head economist and global fintech cohead at ConsenSys.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A top U.S. banking regulator is cautioning firms to ensure they have robust policies to protect themselves from cyberattacks, saying it is seeing an uptick in ransomware attacks, it said in a report issued Monday. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency said banks must have in place “robust” systems to identify threats and vulnerabilities in their technology, and should back up key systems and records in isolation to guard against hackers looking to disrupt systems for a payout. In its semiannual risk report, the OCC also cautioned banks to be vigilant about third-party relationships, noting bad actors are increasingly exploiting outside vulnerabilities to conduct “malicious cyber activities.” The OCC also said credit risk remains moderate for banks, as loan portfolios have weathered the pandemic due to good risk management by banks and government relief programs. However, the OCC noted that banks face some challenges helping clients navigate the conclusion of some of those programs, like the Paycheck Protection Program, leaving banks with heightened compliance responsibilities. On climate, the OCC said it was continuing to work to build a new climate risk framework for nationals banks it supervises, which it plans to first roll out with the nation’s largest, most complex firms.

Pfizer says booster shot promising against Omicron HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk

The White House said on Monday US government officials would boycott the Beijing games because of China’s human rights atrocities The US will have to “pay a price” for its diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, China said on Tuesday, just weeks after talks aimed at easing tense relations between the two sides. The White House said on Monday US

government officials would boycott the Winter Olympics because of China’s human rights “atrocities”, although US athletes were free to travel there to compete. The US boycott, encouraged for months by some members of Congress and rights advocacy groups, comes despite an effort to stabilise ties, with a video meeting last month between US President Joe Biden and China’s Xi Jinping. China opposes the boycott and would take “resolute countermeasures”, foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a regular media briefing in Beijing, host city of the 2008 Summer Olympics, on Tuesday. “The United States will pay a price for its mistaken acts,” he said, without giving details. “Let’s all wait and see.”

Covid-19 cases are rising among children in South African hospitals HiIndia Newsdesk

The number of coronavirus cases in South Africa continues to rise exponentially in a fourth wave of infections that epidemiologists believe is driven by Omicron.

The children had gone to the hospital for various reasons: One had jaundice, another malaria. A third had a broken bone. But once they were admitted, they all tested positive for the coronavirus, a worrying trend in South African

hospitals that hints at how transmissible the new variant, omicron, may be. The doctors in the children’s wards of two large hospitals in Johannesburg say they have not seen a spike in admissions, and they still do not know whether the children have omicron. But the increase in the number of those who test positive after coming in may provide a glimpse into the behavior of the heavily mutated variant that was discovered just last month, and about which little is known.

Pfizer and BioNTech have said a booster jab of their coronavirus vaccine promises to be an effective defence against the new Omicron variant. Three doses provide a similar level of antibodies against Omicron to that of two doses against other variants, the companies said after a small study. The World Health Organization (WHO) earlier said vaccines should still work against severe Omicron cases. Researchers across the world are piecing together data about Omicron. It is the most heavily mutated version of coronavirus found so far. In a statement on Wednesday, Pfizer chief executive Albert Bourla said protection against the variant would be improved with a third dose of the jab. "Ensuring as many people as possible are fully vaccinated with the first two dose series and a booster remains the best course of action to prevent the spread of Covid-19," he said. However, Pfizer and BioNTech noted that the results were preliminary and said they would continue to collect data and "evaluate real-world effectiveness".

UN halts food aid to Ethiopian towns after looting

Critics say LGBT couples still face disadvantages in areas such as taxation even under such partnership arrangements HiIndia Newsdesk

Australia's deputy prime minister has tested positive for coronavirus after arriving in the US on an official visit. Barnaby Joyce said he believed he had been infected while visiting the UK earlier this week. He said he was now in isolation and experiencing mild flu-like symptoms. Mr Joyce met with UK cabinet ministers including Dominic Raab and Grant Shapps while in London, before travelling to Washington DC on Wednesday. It is unclear what transmission risk he posed. No other members of the Australian government delegation have tested positive so far. Mr Joyce said he had returned negative tests before leaving the UK, but upon arrival in the US he felt some fatigue and pain in his legs.

The World Food Programme has suspended food aid distribution in Ethiopia's Dessie and Kombolcha towns after its warehouses were looted by rebel Tigray forces. The UN said WFP staff were unable to prevent the stealing after facing extreme intimidation including being held at gunpoint during the theft. It says that large quantities of food supplies - including nutritional items for malnourished children - were looted in Kombolcha in recent days. A UN spokesman also accused government troops of commandeering three WFP humanitarian lorries and using them for their own purposes. Kombolcha and Dessie, which sit on the crucial highway to the capital Addis Ababa, were this week recaptured by federal forces led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The Tokyo Metropolitan government will start a system that effectively allows same-sex marriage in Japan’s capital in the next fiscal year from April, Japan’s Kyodo news wire reported Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike as saying on Tuesday. The local government for the city with a population of 14 million plans to introduce “same-sex partnership” after its local assembly unanimously called for such a move, Kyodo said. Some local wards in Tokyo as well as some other local municipalities have already introduced a similar plan that officially recognises same-sex couples. But critics say LGBT couples still face disadvantages in areas such as taxation even under such partnership arrangements. A local court in Sapporo in northern Japan ruled in March that same-sex couples not being able to marry is “unconstitutional”, the first ruling in Japan on the legality of same-sex marriage. Both houses of Chile’s congress voted on Tuesday to approve a marriage equality bill that also includes authorisation for adoptions by same-sex couples.

Putin Signals Change of Tone on Ukraine After Biden Call HiIndia Newsdesk

Despite concerns in recent days that a Russian invasion of Ukraine appeared imminent, the Russian leader a day after a high-profile summit offered new cooperation with the White House. Russia President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday characterized his virtual meeting with President Joe Biden the day before as open, substantive and constructive, and he announced that the Kremlin would within a week – perhaps even days – present the U.S. with new proposals on joint security issues. Putin detailed his take on the call at a press

Africa needs China and the US to work together HiIndia Newsdesk

Seventeen African countries are taking part in a two-day Democracy summit hosted by US President Joe Biden, billed as an event to discuss ways to defend against the rise of authoritarianism. Observers say it highlights the contrasting priorities of the US and China on the continent. The summit comes just over a week after the triennial Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (Focac) was held in Senegal's capital, Dakar, which has grown in significance as China became the continent's largest trade partner. China's President Xi Jinping announced investments of at least $40bn (£30bn) in projects spanning agriculture, digital economy, climate change, industrialisation, as well as one billion doses of Covid-19 vaccines in donation and joint manufacturing. "It appears counterintuitive, but the more democratic a country, the closer they get to China," said W Gyude Moore, a senior policy fellow at the Center for Global Development. "The biggest need in Africa happens to be infrastructure, and the funder to turn to in the last 20 years has been China," he added.

conference Wednesday morning, acknowledging the principal topic of Ukraine but also the importance of discussions about cybersecurity – amid U.S. accusations of a Russian-backed hacking campaign – and the value of keeping an open dialogue. We agreed that an appropriate structure will be created that will be able to do this professionally,” the Russian leader said, according to a translation of his remarks. The announcement, though seemingly bureaucratic, indicates the Biden administration has succeeded in at least one of its goals for the high-profile encounter: moving heightened tensions in the Washington-Moscow relationship away from Putin’s provocative military action around Ukraine and instead toward matters of broader mutual concern. Several senior officials within the administration this week have, at times awkwardly, attempted to push bold rhetoric about the strong military response the U.S. is willing to employ were Russia to follow through on its threats to undermine or even invade Ukraine, a former Soviet republic. But they are also quick to shift the conversation to the economic and diplomatic measures they appear more comfortable in wielding – not in the least because those don’t center on ultimately going to war over Ukraine, which Russia, at least, appears willing to do.

Countries weigh whether to join diplomatic boycott of Olympics HiIndia Newsdesk

Neither President Joe Biden nor other US officials are going, but the Russian leader might. New Zealand says it decided months ago that its diplomats would not be attending. On Wednesday, Australia said its officials would be staying home, too. Political leaders of other nations are expected to bow out, too, whether they announce an explicit reason or not. In less than two months, China will open the 24th Winter Olympics in Beijing under the shadow of the coronavirus pandemic and now also a diplomatic boycott intended to protest the host country’s repressive policies. The White House announcement on Monday that it would send no official delegation prompted anger in Beijing, where Chinese officials on Tuesday once again vowed to retaliate. Although the effect of Biden’s decision on other countries remains to be seen, several have already signaled that they, too, will seek ways to express displeasure with China’s policies while stopping short of prohibiting athletes from attending.

US lawmakers reach deal to overhaul how military handles sexual assault cases HiIndia Newsdesk

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), left, speaks during a news conference introducing the Vanessa Guillén Military Justice Improvement and Increasing Prevention Act in Washington, June 23, 2021, as Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), second from left, looks on.

House and Senate negotiators reached a landmark agreement Tuesday that would strip military commanders of most of their

authority to prosecute sexual assaults and myriad other criminal cases, a move that Pentagon leaders, lawmakers and presidents have resisted for nearly a generation. The legislation, part of a broad defense policy bill, comes after nearly two decades of efforts by female lawmakers and survivors’ groups, and despite fierce last-minute lobbying against the proposal by military lawyers. Under the agreement, independent military prosecutors would replace commanders in determining whether those accused of sexual assault, rape, murder, domestic violence and an array of other offenses would be prosecuted. Sexual harassment would

be criminalized but would not fall under the special prosecutor structure, a concession to opponents of the changes. The measure does not go as far as Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., has long sought, and she vowed to fight for further changes in the new year. But the new system would be a sea change in the approach to the intransigent issue of sexual assault in the military. Don Christensen, a former chief prosecutor of the US Air Force who is now president of Protect Our Defenders, a nonprofit organization that has worked on the issue for a decade, called the new legislation “the most significant military justice reform in our nation’s history.”

Houston: Indian-origin physician Anil Menon, a lieutenant colonel at the US Air Force, has been selected by NASA along with nine others to be astronauts for future missions, the American space agency has announced. Menon, 45, was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Ukrainian and Indian immigrants. He was SpaceX’s first flight surgeon, helping to launch the company’s first humans to space during NASA’s SpaceX Demo-2 mission and building a medical organisation to support the human system during future missions. In a statement, NASA announced that it has chosen 10 new astronaut candidates from a field of more than 12,000 applicants to represent the US and work for humanity’s benefit in space. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson introduced the members of the 2021 astronaut class, the first new class in four years, during a Monday, December 6 event at Ellington Field near NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. “ To day we welcome 10 ne w explorers, 10 members of the Artemis generation, NASA’s 2021 astronaut candidate class,” Nelson said.

He went on to say in his report to Johnson: "Her approach on occasions has amounted to behaviour that can be described as bullying in terms of the impact felt by the individuals. To that extent, her behaviour has been in breach of the ministerial code, even if unintentionally." The Prime Minister is the final arbiter on such complaints. His interpretation was that Patel was "unaware" of the disquiet she had caused. "This isn't news that you're going to want to hear but ultimately it was my decision and I wanted you to hear it from me. It's been a really, really challenging decision to make. This is the second time in my career that I'm doing this and I do not want to do this. The last time I did it I cried. This time I hope to be stronger. But we are laying off about 15% of the company for [a number of] reasons: the market, efficiency and performances and productivity. Three top executives have resigned from Better.com -- and more are expected to follow suit -- after the CEO of the

mortgage company fired 900 employees over a Zoom call. Leaked footage of the brutal call went massively viral on social media last week - prompting intense backlash against CEO Vishal Garg. After Omicron Cases Confirmed, “Missing” Passengers HiIndia Newsdesk

The government has said “severity of the disease (after being infected by the Omicron strain) is anticipated to be low” because of vaccination and some natural immunity

New Delhi: After India confirmed its first Omicron Covid cases, concerns have been raised over foreign arrivals - particularly those from ‘at risk’ countries - evading mandatory Covid tests and quarantine protocols, and potentially spreading the virus further. In Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut, 13 of nearly 300 people on flights originating outside the country disappeared after providing false addresses and contact information. Seven flew in from South Africa, where the Omicron variant was first reported, news agency ANI reported. Officials are trying to track and test them for COVID-19, ANI said. Chandigarh officials have registered a case against a woman who returned from South Africa and broke quarantine rules on landing in India. The woman landed Wednesday and tested negative on arrival. She was asked to home quarantine for a week, but she broke isolation the following day to check into a hotel before returning home. As many as 10 passengers - reportedly South Africans - have gone missing from Bengaluru airport. Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashok said airport security, police and the health department are working to track them down and carry out Covid tests. This comes after a 66-year-old South African - India’s first confirmed Omicron Covid case - “fled” the country a week after landing in Bengaluru.

Bollywood is an ‘Surname and the lobby you belong to matter more than talent’

Naseeruddin Shah on his friends, ageing and death How do you confront the idea of aging in your personal life?

I confront the idea by taking care of my health, both mental and physical. What terrifies me the most is the thought of becoming an invalid. The thought of death doesn’t scare me at all. But having to depend on others to perform the basic tasks is a very frightening thought. As far as I am concerned, ever since I turned 60, I have kept myself busy learning new things. I have been learning how to read and write Urdu, how to play the flute, how to play the guitar; during the lockdown I learnt how to cook! I think it is very important. Be it any part of your body, if you don’t use it for a while it will stop working properly. If you don’t use your arm for a while it will begin to atrophy. Similarly, you need to keep stimulating your brain. I have realised that this kind of mental instability can happen to anyone; just like a fever or a cold it can strike anybody. But just like in the case of a physical illness, you can definitely take precautions. What would be worse than me suffering from such an ailment is if this happens to someone I love. So, one has to be on one’s guard. Of course you can’t escape such thoughts but then you can’t afford to dwell on those thoughts –it does no good and leads you nowhere. Whenever such thoughts crop up in my head, I immediately dismiss it and focus on something else. I read something or write something or play my flute. You can’t afford to indulge in such thoughts or let yourself go in that direction. I want to have fun till I am alive. I don’t think I would be doing many such grim plays! It would be more of the lighthearted stuff

I bounced back harder On the work front, Raveena Tandon will be seen in Netflix series Aranyak that features her as a cop named Kasturi Dogra, who is torn between investigating a case and giving time to her family, while making her presence felt in a system that favours men.

A

ctor Raveena Tandon looks back at her journey of 30 years in Bollywood and says she made her way through the male dominated industry by sheer hard work. Tandon made her screen debut with the 1991 action film “Patthar Ke Phool” and emerged as one of the top female stars of the decade, featuring in money spinners like Mohra, Diwale, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. She is now set to make her digital debut with the Netflix series, Aranyak, which features her as a cop named Kasturi Dogra, torn between investigating a case and giving time to her family, while making her presence felt in a system that favours men. When asked, how did Tandon navigate the patriarchal set up of Bollywood to remain consistently on the top, the actor said there were breaking points, but her will power and family always had her back. “Perseverance, hard work will always get rewarded. If you are talented, hardworking and sincere, no one can take it away from you. It was a man’s world then but I see a great change today. There are times when you thank your family for being your backbone, for being there for you.

“You also thank those, who were not there for you, who probably tried to kick you at a time when you were down at your lowest and tried to completely bury you. I thank those people because they gave me the drive to bounce back ever harder. The harder they tried to put me down, the stronger I wanted to bounce back,” Tandon told PTI. The 47-year-old actor, who returns to the screen after the 2017 romantic drama “Shab”, said “Aranyak” offered her the opportunity to bring to the forefront the struggle women go through, juggling their personal and professional lives. The series is directed by Vinay Vyakul, with filmmaker Rohan Sippy attached as the showrunner. The actor recalled how, when she was in her mid 20s, she was shooting for a song in Mauritius, which required her to wear a mini skirt, have two pigtails and pass off as a 16 year old.

Shabazz advertised the cards for sale on social media platforms and distributed them through the U.S. mail, official say. Court officials say Shabazz sold the fraudulent card for approximately $70 to $75 each. “I’m sold out right now no more vax cards until next week,” officials say he posted online over the summer. Visits by Russian presidents to India always invoke a sense of nostalgia. The Moscow-Delhi relationship dates back to the Cold War era and it has been strong ever since.

What Russian president's India visit means for world politics

This "all-weather" partnership is one of the success stories of global diplomacy, and a high mark for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to live up to when they meet in Delhi on Monday. But beyond the big-ticket defence deals, trade announcements, handshakes and Mr Modi's trademark hugs, the two countries will also have to overcome serious challenges. And that is largely down to the different geopolitical choices the two countries have made in recent months and years. How they solve these issues will influence regional, and global politics.

Jadeja, Gill may miss South Africa series because of injury HiIndia Newsdesk

Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shubman Gill and Ishant Sharma - are doubtful for the trip as they will take some months to be completely fit. Injuries to several players has prompted the BCCI senior selection committee to delay naming the squad for the tour of South Africa. The Indian Express understands that at least four players – Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shubman Gill and Ishant Sharma – are doubtful for the trip as they will take some months to be completely fit. Left-arm spin has been India’s strength of late, especially at home, but with Jadeja and Patel unfit, selectors may not

have a viable back-up option in South Africa. Jadeja has a ligament tear while Patel has a stress fracture. In any case, Ravichandran Ashwin is expected to be the lead spinner and there is rarely a need to play more than one specialist tweaker in the Rainbow Nation. Jadeja missed the second Test against New Zealand in Mumbai where Patel had a decent showing with bat and ball. A source in the cricket board informed that Jadeja’s ligament tear will take months to heal and if he undergoes surgery, he will only get fit before the Indian Premier League next year. If the selectors have to pick a left-arm spinner, they have Shahbaz Nadeem and Saurabh Kumar – the latter a part of the India A team currently playing in South Africa – to choose from.

ew Zealand left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel considers himself “fortunate” to be just the third Test cricketer ever with 10 wickets in an innings as all he tried doing in that magical performance against India was putting the ball in the right areas for a long period of time. The 33-year-old Mumbai-born Patel, who migrated to New Zealand as a seven-year old, said it has been a “dream come true” to be able to play at the city of his birth and come up with a historic feat. “It has been a special outing for me. It’s dream to come here and play at Wankhede and be able to do something like that (historic feat) is very special. Not only for me but also for my family back home,” Patel said in an interview by senior India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. “I will count myself as fortunate. I thank God to have (got) this opportunity but it was about putting the ball at good areas for a long period of time,” he said in a video uploaded by the BCCI. “As a spinner, sometimes you really have to work. I have to bowl 47 overs or something. In the end I am very exhausted, 72 or 73 overs in three days.” India won the series 1-0 with a 372-run thumping of the visitors in the second Test here, the same match in which Patel made history. “It is about playing that long games especially when the wickets suited you and giving something to you. We knew that you guys are amazing players of spin. You guys put a lot of pressure on me. “I was trying to be on the money every ball because as soon as I miss, you guys would be on top. So, it has been a bit of mind game. It was about sticking and trusting what you are doing is the right thing.”

How an incredible bench strength has fuelled India’s golden era in cricket HiIndia Newsdesk

India’s Test series in South Africa will commence at the Centurion on Boxing Day, Cricket South Africa has confirmed. As per the revised itinerary, India will play three Tests and as many ODIs during their tour of South Africa, while the T20Is have been postponed following the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. Johannesburg and Cape Town will host the second and third Test respectively, and the ODIs will be played at Paarl and Cape Town. “It is a pleasure for Cricket South Africa (CSA) to confirm the updated schedule for the India men’s tour to South Africa. As announced over the weekend, the tour has been reduced from three series to two: the Test and One-Day International series, following successful engagement with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

I

It’s a testament to the reserves that India can triumph in Australia or win at home against New Zealand without much fuss and without their key players.

ndia’s bench strength may have almost come to be taken for granted, but that perception should not take away from just how ridiculously good it is. The Brisbane Test against Australia earlier this year will remain the hallmark on that front. It is still mind-boggling to recall that T Natarajan and Washington Sundar were making their debuts, Navdeep Saini and Shardul Thakur were playing their second Test, and Mohammed Siraj his third. And this attack bowled out Australia in their famed citadel for 369 and 294. Even in this series against New Zealand, it was two batters far from the first XI who made the difference – Shreyas Iyer in in Kanpur and Mayank Agarwal in Mumbai. Iyer hadn’t played a first-class game in nearly three years

before making a century and half-century on Test debut. Also deriving confidence will be the likes of Axar, who’s thrived this year in Test cricket with ball and now with bat too, with 52 and 41 not out in Mumbai. It tells you something about the health of Indian cricket when alongside the growth of the IPL, there are so many first-rate young cricketers making cases for a run in the Test team. When a Tony Grieg would try pressing his keys into the turf in Australia during pre-dawn pitch reports and unbend himself with a smile at how hard the pitch is, shivers would go up the spine. Nowadays, a smile appears in pitch reports. Dry, bouncy, or moisture laden, the pitch-talk feels just another incidental thing in a day of Indian cricket fan.

Is Walking Enough Exercise If It Doesn’t Make Your Heart Race?

T "The take home point here is that even 15 minutes a day of walking, without stopping, provides benefit with regards to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality." Michael Weinrauch, MD, cardiologist

here are seasons in life when a 15-minute walk is the most you can commit to your exercise routine—and, hey, that's 100 percent okay. Maybe your job is more of a nine to nine than a nine to five right now, or childcare is monopolizing your free moments. ccording to Michael Weinrauch, MD, a New Jersey-based cardiologist, the bottom line is that even the smallest neighborhood loop can have an immense impact on your health and well-being. "The take home point here is that even 15 minutes a day of walking, without stopping, provides benefit with regards to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality," he says. Morbidity refers to illness or disease, while mortality refers to death. Research has associated 15 minutes of activity with a 22 percent lower risk of death (mortality), and walking with a 43 percent reduced risk in stroke and reduction the risk factors of heart attack (morbidity), regardless of

how fast your heart is beating. "Keep in mind, most of the research that has been done on the benefits of walking have been done without monitoring heart rates during physical activity. Remember, the Fitbit and smart watch apps are still actually a relatively new phenomenon," adds Dr. Weinrauch. Long story, short: The morbidity and mortality benefits of walking seem to occur regardless of your heart's beats per minute (BPMs). With that being said, you can increase your cardiovascular fitness by increasing your heart rate and going longer distances—and that may offer even more benefits when it come to morbidity and mortality. "Cardiovascular fitness or aerobic fitness can be defined as a measurement of the body's ability to deliver oxygen to its muscles," explains Dr. Weinrauch. "VO2 Max, which is the maximum rate that oxygen can be consumed during exercise that increases in intensity, is the gold standard for measurement of fitness." However, it's

really up to you how "fit" you want to be. If you're someone who wants to build up your VO2 max so you can run a marathon, fantastic. And if you're someone who's content with a brisk walk to your favorite coffee store, that's also great.

"The bottom line is, if you are walking to improve your health, do not worry about how high to raise your heart rate. If you are interested improving your cardiovascular fitness in addition to improving your health, then more vigorous exercise training will likely be necessary," Dr. Weinrauch says. It's the choose your own adventure of fitness. And regardless of your choice, you're still collecting those morbidity and mortality benefits as long as you clock your 15 minutes each day.

1. You'll feel more alert during your workout Fun fact: Your body naturally produces more of the stress hormone "cortisol" in the morning. This makes you feel more alert and primed for your workout. In the evening, your body produces less cortisol, so it may be harder to convince your brain that it's time to go, go, go.

2. You'll feel happier (thanks, endorphins, serotonin, and norphenylephrine) Endorphins, serotonin, and norphenylephrine—the happiness-boosting neurotransmitters produced by exercise—are great any time of day, but they're especially game-changing on, you know, Monday... Tuesday... and Wednesday mornings. (Every morning, TBH.) "While meditation, laughing, or eating chocolate do raise endorphin levels, they don't raise them as much as exercising intensely for an hour or more," J. Kip Matthews, PhD, previously told Well+Good. Go for a power walk, hop on the treadmill, or bike around your city in the morning, and you'll be walking on sunshine all day long.

3. You'll help your heart do its job Research indicates that early workouts may also benefit those with high blood pressure (HBP). "There are studies saying if you have HBP, there is a favorable HBP change when working out in the morning versus at night," says Lampa. The 2019 study Lampa references was conducted by the American Heart Association (AHA), and studied women and men between the ages of 55 and 80. The research also found that it may be even more beneficial to combine your early-bird workouts with frequent, brief morning walks. So keep that in mind.

What Happens To Your Body When You Get Up and Exercise in the Morning "The best thing about working out in the morning is that you've got it out of the way and you don't have to think about it for the rest of your day," says Tatiana Lampa, NASM, a corrective exercise specialist and trainer. "Working out at night may be difficult— especially after work if a meeting or commitment comes up." Plus: Since the end of daylight saving time means pitch-black darkness by 5 p.m., working out in the a.m. is also your best bet for catching some sunlight.

4. You'll make working out a habit The rules of habit sticking say that if you want to create a new habit, it's best to combine it with an old, established one. Since most of our life-long habits take place in the morning (think: drinking coffee, brushing your teeth, washing your face, etc.), it's also easier to squeeze in a workout then. For example: You may decide that you're going to charge your wearable right next to your toothbrush, so you can easily strap it on and head out for your morning jog. This also takes a lot of overthinking and decision fatigue out of the equation because you know you're going to get it in right after you've taken care of your oral hygiene, period.

5. You may get better sleep Remember that cortisol we talked about earlier? Well, one downside of working out at night is that exercise—and particularly moderate to highintensity exercise—spikes your cortisol levels. While this can be useful for helping your feel alert and ready to go in the morning, it could backfire in the evening and cause trouble sleeping. However, research is conflicting here, and some studies hold that—so long as you finish your workout 90 minutes before bed—you should sleep soundly.

Your celebrity-approved guide to wearing red occasion wear for all your moods Turn to gemstone-inspired shades, like Bollywood star Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and Deepika Padukone did, to make a sartorial statement at the next wedding you attend

In occasion wear, there is no palette more timeless, more auspicious—or quintessential—than red. As an enduring symbol of classicism and femininity, the transformative powers of red (and its myriad iterations from raspberry to burgundy) never disappoint. A slew of celebrities too, including Deepika Padukone dressed in the crimson Sabyasachi lehenga for her big day in November 2018, Anushka Ranjan’s sequinned sharara-sari Manish Malhotra hybrid for her sangeet in November 2021, have made way for the colour on various occasions. Thanks to a perennial demand, season after season, designers populate their collections with a variety of red festive outfits, leaving no shade

or finish unturned.

Sruthy Sithara, first Indian to win Miss Trans Global 2021 This year’s Miss Trans Global title was conferred to Kerala native Sruthy Sithara, who had been competing in the pageant for the last six months. Sithara, who is also one of the four transgender persons to have been given a government job, took to Instagram to share the news with her 95k followers. She wrote, “Miss Trans Global 2021 This smile means a lot for me for my community for my country for the transglobal organization for all those who are oppressed & marginalizedHere’s I am, Sruthy Sithara, Miss Trans Global 2021 Title Winner Thank you so much all who behind this successful journey”. you are all grown up. Pay Attention To The Shape Of Your Feet

Some of us have narrow feet, some have wide; some have smaller toes, while some might have long fingers.. There are so many variations. If you have wide feet, I would advise not to wear closed tapered shoes. Wear wide front closed ones or open toe ones. Even those with smaller toes should opt for closed wide front shoes. The pointed front shoes will pinch your toes and make it very uncomfortable. Unfortunately, besides taking them off after an hour or so, there will be no other solution.

Block Heels Or Platforms

Wear High Heels Without Pain Moisturise Your Feet Well

There will be less friction as you move and you will not get blisters and burns.

Get Your Foot Size Right

Block heels and platforms are way more comfortable than pointed heels. I know nothing can match up to pencil heels, but with the whole creativity boom happening in the design industry, you will find styles and shapes that would catch your fancy. They are as trendy as any!

Extra Cushions For Thin Soles

Shoes that have a thin sole, will cause pain at the bottom of your feet. Get a foot/cushion as that acts like a shock absorber. Rest your feet Take a little rest every now and then while wearing heels. Stretch your feet a little. Your feet will get the break it needs..

Getting the foot size right is really important. Before Shoes With More Support buying a pair, ask the person helping you in the store Wearing heels with more top coverage or an ankle to tell you the right foot size. Also, foot size changes, strap or both will be a lot more comfortable. It and not just while you are growing up, but also when provides additional support to the feet.

Dry skin is real

Ayurvedic practitioner shares important skincare tips What are the symptoms of dry skin?

As per the practitioner, whether dry lips, parched skin or cracked foot, the symptoms of dry skin have the “same root cause”. “If your skin has suddenly turned dry then that’s ‘vikruti’ or state of imbalance of doshas (disease); but if it has been so always, then that’s your ‘prakruti (what you were born with),” she said on Instagram. • Body butter and lotions would help to some extend, but beyond a point, as age progresses, it would require major dietary and lifestyle modification. • There are times when even gallons of water may not come handy (unlike the popular myth). • You may have excess flab hanging loose, that’s indicative of excess fat molecules at the undesired sites and deprivation of the same at the essential sites — brain, bone, skin. • Our body needs fat. Don’t deprive it of the adequate quantity of fat required for healthy functioning of the system,” she mentioned.

What kind of good fats should you have?

• A handful of nuts, a dash of olive oil, slices of coconut, and ghee are good fats that should be part of your daily meal.
