“Deeply Disappointing”

US Criticises India Over Russia Talks

T

HiIndia Newsdesk

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov

India’s middle-ground position on the war has left to a raft of diplomacy in the past few weeks, with China’s foreign minister visiting for the first time since 2019 and now Lavrov seeking to shore up support.

Oil prices slide as Biden weighs huge reserves release

he U.S. and Australia criticized India for considering a Russian proposal that would undermine sanctions imposed by America and its allies, showing a deepening rift between the emerging security partners as Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov traveled to Delhi for talks. “Now is the time to stand on the right side of history, and to stand with the United States and dozens of other countries, standing up for freedom, democracy and sovereignty with the Ukrainian people, and not funding and fueling and aiding President Putin’s war,” Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told reporters in Washington on Wednesday. She called reports of the arrangement “deeply disappointing,” while adding that she hadn’t seen details. Dan Tehan, Australia’s trade minister who also spoke at the briefing, said it was important for democracies to work together “to keep the rules-based

approach that we’ve had since the second world war.” The comments reflect growing unease with India among fellow members of the Quad, a group of democracies seeking to counter China’s assertiveness in the Asia-Pacific region that also includes the U.S., Australia and Japan. India is the world’s largest buyer of Russian weapons, and has also sought to buy cheap oil as fuel prices surge. While India has supported calls for a cease-fire and a diplomatic solution, it abstained at the United Nations on votes for draft resolutions condemning Russia’s invasion that were ultimately vetoed by Moscow. Bloomberg reported Wednesday that India is weighing a plan to make rupee-ruble-denominated payments using an alternative to SWIFT after the U.S. and European Union cut off seven Russian banks from using the Belgium-based cross-border payment system operator.

White House adds $500 million in Ukraine aid

Washington: US President Joe Biden met Wednesday with the parents of a former US Marine i mpr i s on e d i n Ru ss i a an d promised to work to end the “nightmare” of his detention, the White House said. US citizen Trevor Reed is serving a nine-year prison term in a penal colony some 500 kilometers (300 miles) southeast of Moscow after being convicted of assaulting police officers while drunk in 2019. “President Biden met today with Joey and Paula Reed, the parents of Trevor Reed, who is wrongfully detained in Russia,” presidential spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement.

Some Americans are going to Mexico for cheaper petrol

Oil prices have fallen sharply after reports that the US is set to take new steps to bring down high fuel costs. The Biden administration is reportedly considering the release of up to 180m barrels of oil in the coming months from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. If confirmed, this will be the largest-ever release since the reserve was created in 1974. The war in Ukraine has rocked global energy markets in recent weeks over concerns that supplies will be cut. Without giving further details, the White House said that Mr Biden will deliver remarks at 13:30 local time on Thursday, on “his administration’s actions to reduce the impact of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s price hike on energy prices and lower gas prices at the pump for American families”.

USA News in Brief Joe Biden Meets Parents Of Former US Marine Detained In Russia

US President Joe Biden

The White House has pledged an additional $500 million in direct aid for Ukraine as the Russian invasion grinds on. US President Joe Biden told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a 55 minute call Wednesday that the additional aid was on its way. The leaders also reviewed security aid already delivered to Ukraine and the effects that weaponry has had on the war, according to the White House. Zelesnkyy has pressed the Biden administration and other Western allies to provide Ukraine with military jets.

The US and other NATO countries have thus far been unwilling to accommodate that request out of concern it could lead to Russia broadening the war beyond Ukraine’s borders. Prior to Wednesday’s announcement of $500 million in aid, the Biden administration had sent Ukraine about $2 billion in humanitarian and security assistance since the start of the war last month. That’s all part of the $13.6 billion that Congress approved earlier this month for Ukraine as part of a broader spending bill.

Bruce Willis gives up acting due to brain disorder aphasia HiIndia Newsdesk

Bruce Willis will step away from his acting career after being diagnosed with aphasia, a condition that impedes a person’s ability to speak and write. The actor’s family, including his wife Emma Heming-Willis and ex-wife Demi Moore, announced his condition on Instagram on Wednesday. Aphasia is “impacting his cognitive abilities”, the statement said. Willis, 67, is best known for playing John McClane in the Die Hard films, which made him a star. “With much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him,” his family wrote in a joint statement. “

As petrol prices across the US continue to rise, Americans are looking for cheaper ways to fill their tanks - and some are even seeking deals in another country. In the US state of California, which consistently ranks among the highest in the nation for petrol prices, some are heading across the US-Mexico border in search of savings.

IMMIGRATION

WASHINGTON, DC – H-1B Initial Electronic Registration Selection Process Completed U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Ser vices has received enough electronic registrations during the initial registration period to reach the fiscal year (FY) 2023 H-1B numerical allocations (H-1B cap), including the advanced degree exemption (master’s cap). We randomly selected from among the registrations properly submitted to reach the cap. We have notified all prospective petitioners with selected registrations that they are eligible to file an H-1B cap-subject petition for the beneficiary named in the applicable selected registration. Registrants’ online accounts will now show one of the following statuses for each registration (that is, for each beneficiary registered): Submitted: The registration has been submitted and is eligible for selection. If the initial selection process has been completed, this registration remains eligible, unless subsequently invalidated, for selection in any subsequent selections for the fiscal year for which it was submitted. Selected: Selected to file an H-1B cap petition. Denied: Multiple registrations were submitted by or on behalf of the same registrant for the same beneficiary. If denied as a duplicate registration, all registrations submitted by or on behalf of the same registrant for this beneficiary for the fiscal year are invalid. Inv a l i d ate d - Fai l e d Pay m e nt : A registration was submitted but the payment method was declined, rejected, disputed, or cancelled after submission. Y 2023 H-1B Cap Petitions May Be Filed Starting April 1

FY 2023 H-1B Cap Season Updates

HiIndia Newsdesk

H-1B cap-subject petitions for FY 2023, including those petitions eligible for the advanced degree exemption, may be filed with USCIS beginning April 1, 2022, if based on a valid, selected registration. On ly p et it ioners w it h s ele c te d registrations may file H-1B cap-subject petitions for FY 2023, and only for the beneficiary named in the applicable selected registration notice. An H-1B cap-subject petition must be properly filed with the correct service center and within the filing period indicated on the relevant registration selection notice. The period for filing the H-1B cap-subject petition will be at least 90 days. Online filing is

not yet available for H-1B petitions, so petitioners filing H-1B petitions must do so by paper. Petitioners must include a printed copy of the applicable registration selection notice with the FY 2023 H-1B cap-subject petition. Petitioners filing H-1B cap-subject petitions, including those petitions eligible for the advanced degree exemption, must still establish eligibility for petition approval at the time the petition is filed and through adjudication, based on existing statutory and regulatory requirements. Selection in the registration process does not relieve the petitioner of submitting evidence or otherwise establishing eligibility, as registration only pertains

to eligibility to file the H-1B cap-subject petition. Pre-paid Mailer Suspension We will not use pre-paid mailers to send out any communication or final notices for fiscal year 2023 cap-subject H-1B petitions, including those requesting consideration under the advanced degree exemption. The process of printing and mailing t h e c ap - s u bj e c t H - 1 B p e t it i on approval notices by first-class mail is fully automated. Using pre-paid mailers requires a separate, more time-consuming manual process. The existing automated process is more time efficient for both petitioners and USCIS. Because of this, we will use first-class mail as we work to process all cap-subject petitions in a timely manner. Receipt Notice Delays When we receive a timely and properly filed H-1B cap subject petition, the petitioner (and, if applicable, the petitioner’s legal representative) will be provided a Form I-797, Notice of Action, communicating receipt of the petition. Due to increased filing volumes typically seen during H-1B cap filing periods, there are instances where a petition is timely and properly filed, but issuance of the Form I-797 is delayed. If a petitioner has confirmation from the delivery service that the petition was delivered, but they have not yet received a Form I-797 confirming receipt of the petition, the petitioner should not submit a second petition. If a petitioner has confirmation from the delivery service that the petition was delivered and they then submit a second petition, the petitioner will be considered to have submitted duplicate petitions. This will result in denial or revocation of both petitions.

Johannesburg: South Africa has registered a total of more than 100,000 Covid deaths, according to official figures released Wednesday, but actual fatalities are believed to be much higher. Data released by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases showed a total of 100,020 fatalities had occurred since the start of the pandemic two years ago. The institute reported 44 deaths on Wednesday, but only six were from the past two days, while the rest were discovered during an ongoing government audit. Covid-19 fatalities are estimated to be higher than officially reported, with researchers saying they could be triple the reported figures.

Shanghai’s Covid lockdown has left thousands scrambling to stock up on supplies, while others quarantine in their offices to keep business running. After weeks of isolated compound lockdowns, the city of 25 million has been split into two. Earlier this week those living in Shanghai’s eastern half were told to stay home, with the western half due to enter a lockdown on Friday. The move comes as the city battles a surge in Omicron Covid cases. China’s zero-Covid strategy has been increasingly challenged by the highly infectious Omicron variant.

Lowdown On Prashant Kishor’s Talks With Gandhis On 2024 Plan HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk

Rights defenders, journalists and NGOs from several parts of the world have accused the Indian establishment of “abuse” of power and a “harassment campaign” after journalist Rana Ayyub, a critic of the Narendra Modi government, was on Tuesday prevented from boarding an international flight. Ayyub has said she was stopped by the Enforcement Directorate from boarding a flight from Mumbai to London. The agency has summoned her on Friday for questioning on the alleged misuse of funds she had received towards Covid relief. “Sadly #Indian authorities continue to abuse power to silence critics,” Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director of Human Rights Watch, tweeted.

Talks between Mr Kishor and the Gandhis collapsed last year, weeks after Mamata Banerjee’s Bengal victory - in which the strategist played a big role.

Patna: Poll Strategist Prashant Kishor’s resumed negotiations with the Gandhis for a role in resurrecting the Congress ahead of big elections ahead, including 2024, may take shape within the next four weeks, say sources close to the talks. Prashant Kishor reportedly reached out to Rahul Gandhi. But sources close to the strategist counter the Congress’s version that his offer is focused on the Gujarat election later this year. The Congress leadership and Prashant Kishor or “PK” are mainly discussing a blueprint for the 2024 national election, they say. Elections in Gujarat or any other state will fall in line with PK’s assignment and responsibility once the two sides arrive at an agreement for 2024, the sources say. Congress sources, however, insist that Mr Kishor’s latest pitch is a one-time offer to work only on the Gujarat elections with “no strings attached”. A key hold-up in this back-and-forth, reportedly, is PK’s desire for a Big Bang approach as opposed to the Gandhis’ wish

to bring in incremental changes, without antagonising party leaders too much by giving the ace strategist solo charge of revamping the Congress. The Gandhis are on tricky ground after recent election defeats, with a section of the party rooting for a leadership change. PK joining the Congress - instead of taking on an advisory role - is still a remote possibility, sources say. However, it cannot be ruled out, given his May 2 deadline of announcing his future role, but it all hinges on everyone concerned agreeing on Mission 2024. The Congress leadership reportedly sought the opinion of party leaders from Gujarat, at a recent meeting, on roping in PK. Though a majority endorsed signing him up, he is simply not ready to limit his role to one state, sources say. With both sides holding firm onto their views on the nature of their collaboration, the negotiations are at a delicate point where they can go either way, say sources.

Russia is seeking new markets for its oil exports as Western sanctions tighten - and India has been taking advantage of discounted prices to ramp up imports from the country. After the US and China, India is the world’s third-largest consumer of oil, over 80% of which is imported. In 2021, India bought about 12 million barrels of oil from Russia, only 2% of its total imports. By far the largest supplies last year came from the Middle East, with significant quantities also from the US and Nigeria.

Why India is buying more Russian oil Where else is India looking to buy oil? commodities research group. The Indian government says even if it buys more oil from Russia, it would “still be a drop, literally a drop, in a larger bucket” of its oil imports globally.

What’s the deal India is getting?

In January and February, India didn’t import any oil from Russia. But contracts for March and April have already reached six million barrels, according to data compiled by Kpler, a

Following its invasion of Ukraine, there are now fewer buyers for Russia’s Ural crude oil, and its price has fallen. “While we don’t know the exact price that India is paying, the Urals discount to Brent crude [the global benchmark] in the last week has widened to about $30 per barrel,” says Matt Smith, an analyst at Kpler. These two types of crude normally sell at a similar price. But at one point in March, as the price of Urals continued to drop, the difference between them reached an all-time

record, he adds. So “India and China are likely to purchase at least some of this [Russian] crude at a significant discount,” he says.

What’s the impact of financial sanctions?

India’s big refining companies are facing a challenge trying to finance these discounted purchases, because of sanctions on Russian banks. It’s a problem facing trade in both directions. Financial analysts Bloomberg estimate that Indian exporters to Russia are currently awaiting payments equivalent to about $500m (£381.5m). One of the options India is looking at is a transaction system based on local currencies, where Indian exporters to Russia get paid in roubles instead of dollars or euros.

India’s oil imports from the US have gone up significantly since February, according to analysts at Refinitiv. However, market analysts say this may not be sustainable in the future as the US seeks to use its domestic oil production to replace supplies from Russia after its invasion of Ukraine. There are also suggestions that trade with Iran could resume under a barter mechanism which Indian oil refiners could use to buy its oil. This arrangement stopped three years ago, when the US reimposed sanctions on Iran. But this is unlikely to resume without a wider deal reached in international negotiations with Iran over its nuclear programme.

Tipu Sultan: Painting of British defeat in India for sale

A painting capturing the momentous victory in battle of Indian rulers over British East India Company troops in 1780 is up for auction in London.

B

i d s at S ot h e by ’s s a l e on Wednesday will start at £370,000 ($485,000). The painting shows Haider Ali, the sultan of the kingdom of Mysore, and his son, Tipu, defeating Company forces in the famed Battle of Pollilur. Tipu, known as the “Tiger of Mysore”, became the Company’s fiercest foe until he was defeated and killed in 1799. H i s t o r i a n Wi l l i a m D a l r y m p l e has described the painting of what

unfolded in Pollilur as “arguably the greatest Indian picture of the defeat of colonialism that survives”. Mr Dalrymple, whose book, The Anarchy, documents the rise of the East India Company in the 18th Century, has called it “the most crushing defeat” and one that “nearly ended British rule in India”. Tipu, who got his first command at Pollilur, “turned the tide” against the British, Mr Dalrymple told the BBC.

Scenes from the battle were first c o m m i s s i o n e d by Tipu himself in 1784. They were painted on the walls and frescoes of his palace - Daria D au l at B a g h - i n Srirangapatnam, then the capital of Mysore in southern India. Some of these scenes were also painted at least twice on paper using ink and gouache pigments. One of those paintings was sold at auction in 2010 and acquired by the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar. It was brought to England by Colonel John William Freese,

The painting shows Tipu directing his troops from on top of an elephant....

who was in Srirangapatnam after Tipu’s defeat. His family handed it down over generations before selling it in 1978 to a private collector, who sold it in 2010. The origin of the second painting, which Sotheby’s is now auctioning, is less clear. Given how similar it is to the one acquired by Freese, it’s assumed to have also been brought to England by a British officer. It first appeared at auction in the early 1980s, Benedict Carter of Sotheby’s told the BBC. “But we don’t know what happened to it in the 100 years before that.” It has only been briefly displayed before, in 1990 and 1999, leaving it in a “pretty remarkable state”, he said.

Since then, a rule in an old Act is being cited to keep them out of temple premises and fairs. Among the fairs and temples where Muslim traders, who have run shops for years, have recently kept out of are the annual Hosa Margudi and Kollur Mookambika fairs, and the Bappanadu Durgaparameshwari, Mangaladevi and Puttur Mahalingeshwara temples in Dakshina Kannada. Bappanadu, a shrine near Mangaluru, incidentally is considered

The head of its management committee said he had turned down the VHP’s demand to keep Muslim traders out, but they had themselves stayed away due to the row. The ban has hit Muslim traders just when they were looking forward to normal profits post-Covid. The six-month temple fair season in coastal Karnataka, from November to April, is nearing its end. During this period, the region sees 40-50 annual festivals, with traders from outside Karnataka too coming to put up stalls. Dangerous Cancer Causing Chemicals Found In Food Wrappers At Major Fast-Food Restaurants Chains HiIndia Newsdesk

WASHINGTON, DC- McDonald’s, Burger King, Chick-fil-A, Arby’s and Taco Bell are among several popular fastfood chains using packaging containing cancer-causing “forever chemicals,” according to a report Thursday from Consumer Reports. The toxic substances, known as PFAS, have been scientifically linked to an increase in certain cancers, liver damage and immune system disorders.

According to the report, eight restaurants “had at least one type of packaging” with PFAS: Arby’s, Burger King, Chick-fil-A, Cava, McDonald’s, Nathan’s Famous, Sweetgreen and Taco Bell. Other restaurants included in the report that did not have as high a level of PFAS were Panera Bread, Freshii, Chipotle, White Castle, Roy Rogers, Checkers and Wendy’s. PFAS are known as “forever chemicals” because they do not naturally break down in the environment. Instead, they

enter our food and water supply and, according to some reports, are already in our bodies. But these chemicals are not substances you want entering your body, and fatty and salty foods are more likely to absorb them once packaged. Chick-fil-A made a similar pledge to remove PFAS from packaging by summer 2022, according to their website. Taco B ell and McDonald’s have reportedly pledged to remove PFAS from packaging by 2025.

This study, which was authored by Charlotte Debras, Mathilde Touvier, and their colleagues at the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research (Inserm) and Sorbonne Paris Nord University, found a link between some artificial sweeteners and an increased risk for cancer.

ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS ASSOCIATED WITH INCREASED CANCER RISK In a joint email between Debras, Touvier, and Healthline, the authors said that their work suggests that

In order to maintain a healthy level of sugar consumption, she recommends making foods like vegetables, fruits, and dairy your priority. These foods contain naturallyoccurring sugars along with vitamins, minerals, and fibers. In addition, she recommends limiting any sugars that are added

in food preparation and processing. Ludy said that the Dietary Guidelines recommend consuming less than 10 percent of total calories from added sugars. For a person eating a 2,000-calorie diet, this would translate to no more than 200 calories or 50 g of sugars. Ludy suggests drinking water or plain milk in lieu of sweetened beverages and using moderation when it comes to sweetened snacks and desserts. Finally, she suggests comparing labels when grocery shopping. increased cancer risk.

In addition, animal studies have suggested artificial sweeteners might be carcinogenic. However, their study is the first to investigate associations between the amount of artificial sweetener intake and cancer risk, as well as take into account the different types of artificial sweeteners. ASSESSING THE LINK BETWEEN ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS AND CANCER B e c aus e t he s afet y of artificial sweeteners has long been a topic of debate, the researchers decided to look into their potential link to cause cancer. They analyzed 102,865 French adults who were participating in the NutriNetSanté study. CUT BACK ON REFINED CARBS One way to help lose weight quickly is to cut back on sugars and starches, or carbohydrates. This could be with a low carb eating plan or by reducing refined carbs and replacing them with whole grains. A 2020 study confirmed that a very low carbohydrate diet was beneficial for losing weight in older populations, Research also suggests that a low carb diet may reduce appetite, which can lead to naturally eating fewer calories without thinking about it or feeling hungry, MOVE YOUR BODY Exercise, while not required to lose weight, can help you lose weight more quickly. Lifting weights has particularly good benefits. If lifting weights is not an option for you, doing some cardio workouts such as walking, jogging, running, cycling, or swimming is very beneficial for weight loss and general health. Both cardio and weightlifting may help with weight loss and offer lots of other health benefits. EAT PROTEIN, FAT, AND VEGETABLES Aim to include a variety of foods at each meal. To balance your plate and help you lose weight your meals should include: • a protein source • fat source • vegetables • a small portion of complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains. Vegetables Don’t be afraid to load your plate with leafy green vegetables. They’re packed with nutrients, and you can eat ver y large amounts without greatly increasing calories and carbs.

All vegetables are nutrientrich and healthy foods to add to your diet, but some vegetables, like potatoes, sweet p otato es, winter squash, and corn, are higher in carbs.

Indo-Pacific: US proposes 1.8 billion HiIndia Newsdesk

US President Joe Biden has proposed USD 1.8 billion to support his IndoPacific Strategy along with another USD 400 million to counter China’s aggressive behaviour in the strategically vital region. The US, India and several other world powers have been talking about the need to ensure a free, open and thriving Indo-Pacific in the backdrop of China’s rising military manoeuvring in the region. The budget, the White House said, promotes integrated deterrence in the Indo-Pacific and globally. To sustain and strengthen deterrence, the budget prioritises China as the Department’s pacing challenge.

Jaipur: A massive fire in Rajasthan’s Sariska Tiger Reserve that started yesterday has spread to over 10 sqkm, the size of some 1,800 football fields, officials have said. Two Indian Air Force, or IAF, helicopters are dropping water over the affected area, they said. The fire threatens the territory of a tigress, codenamed ST-17 for tracking by scientists, which is at the area with

her two cubs, officials have said. The big cats may suffocate, experts have said. There are over 20 tigers in the Sariska reserve. Firefighters are yet to bring the situation under control. The two IAF helicopters have been scooping up water from Rajasthan’s Siliserh Lake and dropping over the forest fire in Sariska, 43 km from the lake.

Fareed Zakaria makes strong case for India to align itself with US

China has announced its biggest city-wide lockdown since the Covid outbreak began more than two years ago. The city of Shanghai will be locked down in two stages over nine days while authorities carry out Covid-19 testing. The important financial hub has battled a new wave of infections for nearly a month, although case numbers are not high by some international standards. Authorities had so far resisted locking down the city of some 25 million people to avoid destabilising the economy.

US President Joe Biden has proposed to increase the developmental assistance to India in clean energy, digital economy, and also in combating increasing authoritarianism. The proposed increase in India’s developmental assistance from USD 25 million in 2021 to USD 66 million for the fiscal 2023 is part of the State Department’s developmental assistance for the fiscal 2023, which was sent by the White House to the US Congress on Monday.

‘Every time you think there is a new dispensation that will go on forever, the great thing of a democracy is that it changes’

Speaking at the ABP Network Ideas of India Summit 2022 in Mumbai on Saturday, Zakaria HiIndia Newsdesk said: “The Russian invasion of Ukraine in some ways is a more important event than 9/11 Air raid sirens sounded across Ukraine because it has the capacity to remake the global before dawn on Tuesday as Ukrainian order in a way that 9/11 did not. 9/11 at the end and Russian negotiators met in Turkey of the day was a band of terrorists who were able for the first face-to-face talks in nearly to disrupt the normal life of citizens around the three weeks, with Kyiv seeking a world in a way that forced governments to react. ceasefire without compromising on He said: “India has not thought strategically territory or sovereignty. about its place in the world for 20 to 30 years… Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan To say that you are multi-aligned is to say that welcomed delegations from both sides you are not willing to make any choices… it saying that “stopping this tragedy” was means that you actually do not have a strategy.” up to them.

7 Indian-origin persons charged in onemillion dollar insider trading scheme The SEC announces insider trading charges against the seven individuals for allegedly generating more than USD 1 million in collective profits by insider trading HiIndia Newsdesk

Seven Indian-origin persons have been charged by federal authorities with insider trading in a scheme through which they made over a million dollars in illegal profits. Hari Prasad Sure, 34, Lokesh Lagudu, 31 and Chotu Prabhu Tej Pulagam, 29, are friends and worked as software engineers at Twilio, a San Francisco-based cloud computing communications company, the Securities and Exchange Commission said Monday. The complaint said Sure tipped his close friend Dileep Kumar Reddy Kamujula, 35, who successfully traded in Twilio’s options. Lagudu similarly tipped his girlfriend Sai Nekkalapudi, 30 with whom he lived, and he also tipped his former roommate and close

friend Abhishek Dharmapurikar, 33. Pulagam tipped his brother Chetan Prabhu Pulagam, 31. All the seven defendants live in California. The SEC announced insider trading charges against the seven individuals for allegedly generating more than USD 1 million in collective profits by insider trading ahead of Twilio’s positive first quarter 2020 earnings announcement on May 6, 2020. According to the SEC’s complaint, Sure, Lagudu and Chotu Pulagam had access to various databases relevant to Twilio’s reporting of revenue. As alleged, around March 2020, they learned through the databases that Twilio’s customers had increased their usage of the company’s products and services

in response to health measures taken in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, and concluded in a joint chat that Twilio’s stock price would rise for sure. The SEC’s complaint alleges that despite receiving a company policy that prohibited them from insider trading, Sure, Lagudu and Chotu Pulagam knowingly tipped off, or used the brokerage accounts of Kamujula, Nekkalapudi, Dharmapurikar and Chetan Pulagam to trade Twilio options and stock in advance of its May 6, 2020 earnings announcement while in possession of the confidential information concerning customer usage. According to the complaint, the scheme generated more than USD 1 million in illegal trading profits.

BJP legislators clash Vladimir Putin can’t remain in Bengal Assembly in power, says Joe Biden HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk

President Joe Biden delivered a forceful denunciation of Vladimir V. Putin’s invasion of Ukraine on Saturday, declaring “for God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power” and casting the military clash in Europe as the “test of all time” in a decades-long battle to defend democracy. In a speech from a castle that served for centuries as a home for Polish monarchs, Biden described the face-off with Putin as a moment he has long warned about: a clash of competing global ideologies, of liberty versus oppression.

Carefully Considering Russia Demand For Ukraine Neutrality, Says Zelensky The West Bengal Assembly plunged into pandemonium on Monday as ruling TMC and BJP MLAs exchanged blows after saffron party legislators demanded a statement by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over “worsening” law and order situation in the state. Around 25 BJP MLAs led by Leader

of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari then walked out of the assembly, claiming that several party legislators were roughed up by TMC MLAs inside the House. TMC leader and state minister Firhad Hakim, however, told reporters that the BJP is staging a drama to create chaos in the assembly.

Kyiv: President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday his government is “carefully” considering a Russian demand of Ukrainian neutrality, a key point of contention as negotiators for both sides prepare for a fresh round of talks aimed at ending the brutal month-long war. “This point of the negotiations is understandable to me and it is being discussed, it is being carefully studied,” Zelensky said during an interview with several independent Russian news organisations.

Indian American Congressman Ro Khanna said that Indians ought to be condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin for his invasion of Ukraine. He also said New Delhi should not be getting oil from Russia and China. While speaking to Fox News, Khanna said: “I’ve been clear actually on India, and I think India ought to be condemning Putin and India ought not to be getting oil from Russia or China. We ought to rally the world to isolate Putin.” He added, “First India should condemn Putin in the UN for the blatant human rights violations. Second, they need to realise, they have to pick sides.” Earlier Indian American Congressman Dr Ami Bera too expressed disappointment over India’s stand on the Ukrainian crisis.

Chandigarh: The Punjab government will fight strongly for its “rightful claim over Chandigarh”, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said today in his first reaction to Union Home Minister

Chandigarh administration employees. The move is driven by the BJP’s nervousness, said Mr Mann’s AAP, which won the recent Punjab election. Mr Mann also accused the central government of violating the Punjab Reorganisation Act 1966 by bringing in officers from other states and services into the Chandigarh administration. “Central Govt has been stepwise imposing officers and personnel from other states and services in Chandigarh administration. This goes against the letter and spirit of Punjab Reorganisation Act 1966. Punjab will fight strongly for its rightful claim over Chandigarh... (sic),” Mr Mann tweeted today.

Mumbai: A strong Congress party is necessary for democracy, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said at a recent event, commenting that it was his “sincere wish” that the Congress, battered by serial election losses, became stronger and that its leaders did not switch sides in despair. Nitin Gadkari also said a weakened Congress meant regional parties taking up the opposition space, which was “not a good sign”. “Democracy runs on two wheels - the ruling dispensation and the Opposition. A strong Opposition is a need for democracy. Hence it is my sincere wish that the Congress party should become stronger.

Indian American Doctor Jailed for 96 months in Covid Fraud HiIndia Newsdesk

An Indian American ophthalmologist based in New York has been sentenced to 96 months in prison. Ameet Goyal MD was involved in a healthcare fraud scheme that involved fraudulently obtaining government loans meant for Covid-hit small businesses. Goyal was sentenced this month for falsely billing millions of dollars of upcoded procedures as well as fraudulently obtaining two government guaranteed loans intended to help small businesses during the pandemic. In addition to the prison term, he was sentenced to five years of supervised release, and ordered to pay forfeiture of $3.6 million and restitution of $3.6 million. He has already paid approximately $1.79 million toward these

obligations. During his sentence, Damian Williams, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, said: “A prominent ophthalmologist and oculoplastic surgeon who has now surrendered his medical license, Goyal was blinded by greed. Over a seven-year period, he preyed on the trust placed in him and cheated patients and insurance companies of $3.6 million in false charges.” Williams added, “Even after being arrested for this scheme, he committed a breathtaking new fraud and stole $637,200 from the Paycheck Protection Programme in the early days of a devastating pandemic,” Williams said. “For his crimes, Goyal will serve a substantial sentence in prison,”
