The bill first passed the House in 2019, but was not considered by the then-Republican controlled Senate and faced opposition from the Trump administration. HiIndia Newsdesk U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday revoked a proclamation from his predecessor that blocked many green card applicants

from entering the United States. Former President Donald Trump issued the ban last year, saying it was needed to protect U.S. workers amid high unemployment due to the coronavirus pandemic. Biden rejected that reasoning in a proclamation on Wednesday rescinding the visa ban. The Democratic president said it had prevented families from reuniting in the United States and harmed U.S. businesses.

HiIndia Newsdesk President Joe Biden has approved a major disaster declaration for Texas which has suffered widespread p ow e r b l a c k o u t s and water shortages during a deadly deep freeze, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said on Saturday. Millions of residents in the US’s biggest oil and gas producer have dealt with power outages, and nearly half of Texas’s residents on Friday had to endure disrupted water service. Nearly two dozen deaths have been attributed to the storm and a frigid snap.

California is first state to pass 50,000 Covid deaths

The action makes federal funding available to individuals across the state, including assistance for temporary housing and home repairs and low-cost loans. Biden is also weighing a trip to Texas to survey the federal response to the first new crisis to develop since he took office a month ago. The White House is working closely with Texas governor Greg Abbott, a Republican who did not initially acknowledge Biden’s November election win. All the state’s power plants had returned to service, although more than 195,000 homes remained without electricity on Friday morning, and residents of 160 of Texas’s 254 counties had water service disruptions, according to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

Moments later, President Joe Biden’s national security adviser offered a starkly different response to the same question. “Right now, the most profound national security challenge facing the United States is getting our own house in order, is domestic renewal,” Jake Sullivan said in a “Passing the Baton” forum hosted by the U.S. Institute of Peace late last month. Sullivan’s answer signals the Biden administration's approach to foreign policy will acknowledge the appeal of former President Donald Trump's "America First" platform, even if they reject any comparisons.

Tiger Woods will not face any criminal charges following the single-car crash he was involved in on Tuesday that left him with serious injuries. The US golfing champion was driving alone on a Los Angeles downhill stretch of road known for crashes. His SUV hit the central reservation, crossed into the opposite lane, rolled over several times and then plunged off the road and down an embankment. He is recovering after surgery to his fractured leg and shattered ankle. "A reckless driving charge has a lot of elements into it, this is purely an accident," Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva told reporters. There no evidence Woods was impaired by drugs or alcohol, he added. "He was not drunk," he said on Wednesday. "We can throw that one out." He added the most Woods could face would be a low-level offence known as an infraction if investigators concluded that he was speeding or not paying attention, the AFP news agency reports.

Washington: US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has asked his Democratic colleagues to draft a legislative package to "outcompete" China, create new American jobs and invest in strategic partners and alliances like NATO and India. On a caucus call on Tuesday, Mr Schumer discussed his push to direct Senate committees to draft a legislation to protect American jobs and outcompete China. He said his intention is to put the legislation on the Senate floor for a vote this spring. "Today I directed the chairs and members of our relevant committees to start drafting a legislative package to outcompete China and create new American jobs," Mr Schumer said. The new legislation, he said, must achieve three goals. They should enhance American competitiveness with China by investing

in US innovation, American workers and American manufacturing; invest in strategic partners and alliances: NATO, Southeast Asia and India; and expose, curb, and end once and for all China's predatory practices which have hurt so many American jobs, Mr Schumer said. The legislation will have as its centrepiece a bicameral, bipartisan bill, the Endless Frontiers Act, which Mr Schumer introduced last year with Senator Todd Young, Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna and Senator Mike Gallagh in the House. He said at present semiconductor manufacturing is a dangerous weak spot in US economy and national security and that has to change. This month alone, nearly 20 anti-China legislations have been tabled or reintroduced in either chambers of the US Congress.

Ravichandran Ashwin Becomes Fastest Indian To 400 Test Wickets

HiIndia Newsdesk India off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin became the fastest Indian bowler to 400 Test wickets on Thursday. Ashwin, playing his 77th Test, was on 397 wickets at the end of England's first innings of the ongoing third Test and dismissed England batsmen Ben Stokes, Ollie Pope and Jofra Archer in the second innings to get to the milestone. Ashwin is only behind Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan in the list of fastest players to 400 wickets in Tests.

'different priorities' than public welfare and flayed party leader Rahul Gandhi over his recent 'north-south' remarks. Hitting out at the "Congress culture," at a public meeting in the poll-bound union territory, he said people were witness to it in the last five years. "Our colonial rulers had the policy of divide and rule. Congress has a policy of divide, lie and rule. Sometimes their leaders put region against region... community against community," he said in an apparent reference to Gandhi's recent 'north-south' remarks which the BJP opposed strongly. During his Kerala visit on Tuesday, Gandhi had said he was used to a "different type of politics" in north India and coming to the southern state was "very refreshing" as people are interested in "issues".

Axar, Ashwin star as India rout England to win day-night Test HiIndia Newsdesk India were bowled out for 145 in their first innings on the second day of the Pink Ball Test in Ahmedabad on Thursday as Joe Root (5/8) picked up his first ever fifer in First Class cricket. Trailing by 13 runs at the end of the first day’s play, India resumed with Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane from 99/3. They were soon sucked into a spin whirlpool, with Joe Root and Jack Leach (4/54) bowling in tandem. When India were bowled out at the end of the first session, they had a first innings lead of 33 runs. It was Axar Patel who was the wrecker-in-chief in the second innings too, taking 10 wickets for the match. Ashwin picked up his 400th Test wicket, becoming the second quickest to the mark after Muttiah Muralitharan. England were bowled out for 81 in their second innings, their lowest ever Test score vs India, to set India a fourth innings target of 49 runs. At Dinner, India were 11/0, needing 38 more to win. On Day 1, Axar Patel took 6 wickets, Ravichandran Ashwin took 3 and Ishant Sharma, playing his 100th Test, picked up 1 as England were bowled out for a measly 112. The victor of this match will take a 2-1 series lead with one match left to play and will keep their chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship final alive.

Adimoolam said publishers are also facing a very opaque advertising system, as they are unable to get details of Google's advertising value chain. "The Society insisted that Google should increase the publisher share of advertising revenue to 85 percent, and also ensure more transparency in the revenue reports provided to publishers by Google," the INS said in a statement. It noted that, over the past year publishers across the world have been raising the issue of fair payment for content and of proper sharing of advertising revenue with Google. It is also noted that Google has recently agreed to better compensate and pay publishers in France, the European Union and notably in Australia.

‘Code of ethics’ to be applicable for news outlets, OTT platforms HiIndia Newsdesk The government on Thursday said a 'code of ethics' and three-tier grievance redressal mechanism would be applicable for news publishers, over-the-top (OTT) platforms and digital media. Seeking to establish a soft touch regulatory framework for these entities, the government said OTT platforms (like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video) would have to self-classify the content into five age-based categories - U (Universal), U/A 7+ (years), U/A 13+, U/A 16+, and A (Adult). Briefing reporters, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said such platforms would be required to implement parental locks for content classified as U/A 13+ or higher, and reliable age-verification mechanisms for content classified as 'A'.The publishers of online curated content will also have to prominently display the classification rating specific to each content or programme together with a content descriptor informing the user about the nature of the content, he added.

Australia passes law to make Google and Facebook pay for news

HiIndia Newsdesk Australia has passed a world-first law aimed at making Google and Facebook pay for news content on their platforms. The news code legislation had been fiercely opposed by the US tech giants. Last week Facebook blocked all news content to Australians over the row, but reversed its decision this week after negotiations with the government. Following those talks, the law passed with new amendments which make it possible for Facebook and Google not to be subject to the code. However, both companies have now committed to paying lucrative sums to some big Australian publishers outside of the code. These deals have been widely viewed as a compromise by the tech giants. Australia's law has been seen as a possible

test case for similar regulation in other countries to get payment from digital platforms for news. The amended legislation was passed in the House of Representatives on Thursday, after earlier going through the Senate.

The law incentivises tech giants and news organisations to negotiate payment deals between themselves. If such talks fail, digital platforms could be dragged into independent arbitrations. The government argues this prescribes a

"fairer" negotiation process between the parties, as it gives news organisations more leverage. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) - a market regulator - says publishers have had little negotiating power until now because they are so reliant on tech monopolies like Google and Facebook. Any dispute over the value of news content would be settled by the arbitrator - something analysts say benefits the news groups. The code also forces tech platforms to give notice to news publishers of changes to their algorithms. However, the amended law now requires the government to consider a platform's existing contributions to journalism - such as commercial deals with publishers before applying the code to them.

on the orders of their father. Shamsa, who was just 18 then and is now 39, has not been seen in public since. The government of Dubai has not responded to BBC requests for comment. A High Court judge ruled in 2019, that Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum had abducted both daughters and held them against their will. Latifa had secretly recorded on a phone she had been given, in which she described how she was being held "hostage" by her father following a failed escape attempt in 2018. The UN has since asked the United Arab Emirates for proof that Latifa is alive. But almost two decades earlier, an attempt by her older sister to flee the family also ended in capture and imprisonment. In August 2000, around two months after escaping from her father's Longcross Estate in Surrey, Shamsa was forcibly taken from Cambridge, flown by helicopter to France and then by private jet back to Dubai. Akshay Kumar realised need to reinvent during action hero stint "I would know I had to go on the set and do action. I used to get bored and used to think ‘what am I doing by just doing action'," Akshay said.

B

ollywood star Akshay Kumar says he realised the importance of reinvention when he got stuck with the action hero image in the initial stage of his career. "I realised it (the need to reinvent) long back, because in the initial days I used to do only action films. I was known as an action hero. In fact, when I used to get up every morning, I would know I had to go on the set and do action. I used to get bored and used to think ‘what am I doing by just doing action'," Akshay said. He recalls using comedy to break away from the stereotype, and then also explored rom-com space. "I tried doing different things. At that time, people used to say ‘tu comedy nahi kar payega (you won't be able to do comedy)'. But Priyadarshanji and Rajkumar

Santoshiji gave me my break in comedy, and they got me into it," he said. Asked what genre he wants to try, Akshay said: "I don't go on the lines, he is a villain, he is a hero. I have done everything. If I like a film, I do it."Akshay will soon be seen in "Sooryavanshi", in which he plays ATS officer Veer Sooryavanshi. He plays a RAW agent in "Bell Bottom", and brings alive the heroism of Prithviraj Chauhan in "Prithviraj". He also has "Bachchan Pandey", "Atrangi Re", "Raksha Bandhan" and "Ram Setu" lined up.

alking about her relationship with her father, she wrote on Twitter, “My father has licensed rifle and guns, growing up he didn’t scold he roared, even my ribs trembled, in his youth he was famous for gang wars in his college which gave him a reputation of a gunda, I fought with him at 15 and left home, became first Baaghi Rajput woman at 15.” Kangana, who often alleges that the some sections of the film industry have systemically targeted her, again took a potshot. “This chillar industry thinks success got to my head and they can fix me, I was always Baaghi its only after success my voice got stronger and today I am one of the most prominent voices in the nation. History is a witness whoever tried to fix me I fixed them instead.” she added, “My papa he wanted to make me the best doctor in the world, he thought he was being a revolutionary papa by giving me education in best institutions, when I refused to go to school he tried to slap me I held his hand and famously told him ‘if you slap me I will slap you back’.” She said their relationship changed from that day. “That was it end of our relationship something changed in his eyes, he looked at me then my mother and left the room, I knew I had crossed the line and never found him back again but one can only imagine the extend i can go to break free, nothing can keep me caged,” the actor added.

Bigg Boss 14 winner Rubina Dilaik

A

s Rubina Dilaik emerged as the winner of Bigg Boss 14 on Sunday night, she was coming off a roller-coaster journey in the last four and a half months. The popular television star has had a roller coaster journey on the show. While she never managed to win the hearts of her co-contestants, her loyal audience stayed true to her. The reality show also has given Rubina and husband Abhinav Shukla a second chance to work on their marriage. The couple had announced on the show that they were facing trouble in their marriage and have also contemplated divorce. The TV actor defeated Rahul Vaidya to take home the coveted trophy. For me, my relationship is the most precious thing, and thus achieving it was more special. This (showing her trophy) I don’t take it for granted but I have always believed that success is all about professional and personal life together. And now, towards the end of the journey, I can probably say that I have been able to achieve that.

hahid Kapoor is all set to join the list of Bollywood actors who have tried their luck on the digital medium. The actor is set to make his digital debut with Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK’s yet-to-be-titled quirky thriller, that’ll stream on Amazon Prime Video. Shahid, who liked the idea and the story, had been waiting to work with The Family Man creators Raj and DK for sometime now. He says he couldn’t think of anyone else but the duo to venture into the digital space. In a statement, the Kabir Singh actor shared, “I have been keen to collaborate with Raj and DK for a while. My favourite Indian show on Amazon Prime Video is The Family Man. I couldn’t think of anyone better for my digital debut than them. I loved the story idea when I first heard it and since then it has been an exciting ride so far.” The untitled web series is Raj and DK’s second project with Amazon Prime Video after The Family Man. They are happy to have signed Shahid for the series which is their “favourite script” and has been “a labour of love” for them. Calling the actor a perfect match for their work, the creators said, “He was always our first choice for this series. We hit it off immediately, and have been on the same page from the first time we spoke. Shahid is an exciting actor to watch and work with. The intensity he brings to his roles is amazing.”

I would, however, clarify that these are my [perceptions]. For example, I have bracketed Raga Mia Ki Malhar as fear, after seeing the situation that arises during floods and calamities. However, rains can also [be perceived as] romantic.

Dev DD 2: ALTBalaji and ZEE5 are back again with double the fun

ALTBalaji and ZEE5 launch the much-awaited Season 2 of their favorite woman-centric series Dev DD. The series was initially based on the book Devdas by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay but from a female perspective. Despite being a story known for ages, it is the fresh storytelling where the tables have turned that will keep you glued to your couch and binge-watch till the end. As the story progresses, there are twists in the plot, which are just awesome. Set in today's time and age, but in a society that isn't very open-minded, Devika Dharam Dwivedi is a girl determined to break taboos and stereotypes. The protagonist and her badass attitude form the core of DEV DD! After the success of season 1, the second instalment sees a whole different side of hers.

I want to keep dancing and teach the art to younger generation. I have a plan to start a dance academy in Pushkar and take my students on world tour,” Gulabo said. She said her academy will not only teach Kalbeliya, but also showcase handicrafts, traditional instruments and much more to keep the folk culture alive. Sharing her experience in the past one year during the coronavirus lockdown, she said it has been a tough time for artistes, making it difficult to find work. “Many of them could not even buy grocery. We helped them during their

tough time. We motivated them that good times will come back again,” she said. The acclaimed dancer is among the guests invited in the ongoing Jaipur Literature Festival. The Padma Shri recipient said the struggle started in her life right after her birth. At birth, elders of the community buried her alive. Dancing professionally was unheard of in the Sapera (snake charmers) community but at age of two, she would sway along with her father’s serpents on the tunes of the “been” (a music instrument), she said. Miss India Manya Singh

“I am fortunate to have a daughter like Manya. She struggled hard, day and night, to achieve her dream. We stood by her and gave it our all. Back then, it did look out of reach. But she did it. Born in Mumbai and raised in the small town of Hata in Uttar Pradesh, Manya was crowned VLCC Femina Miss India 2020 runner-up in a ceremony last week. The beauty queen rode an autorickshaw to her alma mater on Tuesday, her father in the driver’s seat and her mother holding her hand sitting at the back, a family that dared to dream big and gave it their all to make it come true. Miss India 2020 runner-up Manya Singh’s father Omprakash led the 18-vehicle strong autorickshaw rally for the one kilometre-long stretch, from the end of Thakur village area to her college, the Thakur College of Science and

Commerce, the humble three-wheeler getting pride of place in the celebration of her win. “Today when I was driving the auto, there was this uncontrollable happiness. I was trying hard not to cry. I remembered how I would sometimes drop her to her college. Today, I was taking her with the crown on her head. I feel I've got my life's worth of happiness,” her father Omprakash, an autorickshaw driver, told. As they drove into the college, from where she graduated in Banking and Insurance, students, teachers and the management broke into spontaneous applause. “I am fortunate to have a daughter like Manya. She struggled hard, day and night, to achieve her dream. We stood by her and gave it our all. Back then, it did look out of reach. But she did it. Now, I hope all parents encourage their daughters to touch the sky. Please support your daughters, so that they continue to dream,” the 19-year-old’s mother Manorama said after the rally.

He also attacked the opposition parties for ‘misleading’ farmers, saying those who are disrupting the House are doing so as per a ‘wellplanned strategy’ as they are unable to digest that people can see the truth.

7 Daily Habits to Change Your Life Forever

The direction of our lives is decided more by the daily choices we make than anything else. And these choices are more influential to the person we are becoming than we often realize. Habits become ingrained, automatic, and often slowly creep into your life so subtly that they become routine. So if you want to change your life, start by changing one thing that you do each day. But change can be hard.

1. 3-Item To-Do List. The 3-item to-do list has revolutionized my life. Every morning, with my cup of coffee, I write down the three most important tasks that I need to complete that day. It is a practice I cannot recommend enough. The 3-item to-do list will keep you focused on your priorities. But more than that, it will allow you to feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day (assuming you accomplish them). It has taken away my feeling of “I never get enough done” and replaced it with “I accomplished my most important work.” And that is a beautiful feeling.

2. Exercise. When I lived in Vermont, I had a mentor named Jeff that I looked up to quite a bit (still do actually). Jeff used to ask me and other men an unusual question when we would spend time together. He’d ask, “So, are you staying physically active?” I used to think Jeff was concerned with my physical health— which I’m sure he was. But as I have embraced a daily practice of exercise, I have learned the benefits are not just physical, they are mental and emotional as well. Jeff knew physical activity was an important key to a healthy and productive life. Don’t overthink “exercise daily.” This doesn’t need to be a 3-mile run or tennis match every day. Go for a walk, stretch, mow the lawn, workout to a YouTube video, or have sex.

3. Turn off Television. Not only are the negative effects of TV detrimental to our lives, the opportunity cost is great. There are just better, more life-fulfilling things we could be doing with our lives than watching someone else live theirs. When we decided to watch less television years ago, we were immediately forced to fill our evenings with something else.

So let me offer today, a list of 7 simple, daily habits that will positively change your life forever. Most of these habits can be completed in just a few minutes each day. And each of them I have seen personally alter the trajectory of my life.

Surprisingly, it wasn’t that hard to find a more life-giving activity than television. We spent more time together as a family. We spent more time outdoors. I began to write more. I visited the gym more frequently. I took more control over my life and my decisions. These are all good things—healthy habits—and cutting out television provided opportunity for me to accomplish them. The same will happen for you.

4. Practice Gratitude. Say a prayer. Keep a gratitude journal. Meditate. Or discuss the high points of your day over dinner with your family. Whatever works best for you, express gratitude at some point every single day. Gratitude reframes our circumstances. It drives out discontent. It directs our attention to the good things in our lives. It brings attentiveness and intentionality. And it more appropriately positions our attitude in relation to the universe and world around us. Gratitude, as a habit, is a discipline to practice daily. Because when gratitude is the hardest to find, is when we need it the most.

5. Write something. Every day, sit down and write something. Anything. It can be a 3-sentence post on Instagram, a 3-paragraph private journal entry, or a 3-page blog post to share with the world. Where your writing ends up means far less than the impact it will have on your life. The habit of writing will force you to see the world in a more observant way. You will rethink conversations, circumstances, and relationships. I once heard an old quote by Dawson Trotman, “Thoughts disentangle themselves when they pass through the lips and fingertips.” And I cannot tell you how true that it is.

Writing helps us think better and interact better with the world around us. I was recently asked on Twitter, “With the growth of YouTube and video content, do you intend to keep blogging?” My response was, “Yes. I have found that I think and live better when I write—because it forces me to become more observant. I am a better person because I began writing.”

6. Reset Your Kitchen. Every night, before you go to bed, clean your kitchen. In a practical sense, it will help brighten your mood in the morning. After all, there are few things less desirable early in the morning than needing to clean up yesterday’s mess. The habit helps brighten your morning in the kitchen… and quickly spills over into other daily habits focused on keeping your home tidy. By the way, if resetting your kitchen every evening seems too difficult, you’ll find it easier if you own less stuff. There is something magical about not dragging yesterday’s mess into today—and this practice extends far beyond clutter.

7. Eat Together. I realize, of course, if you live alone, this final habit may not apply. But I fear there are too many people living together who are also not applying this habit to their lives. If you are a parent… or a spouse… or a partner… or a roommate, make every effort to eat one meal together each day. When shared with others, food becomes a bonding experience that is difficult to replicate anywhere else. Meals around a table are one of the rare moments in our day where we sit down facing one another. As the food nourishes our physical body, community and relationship feed our soul. It is difficult to be an intentional parent or spouse without sharing meals together with those we love the most.

Many study participants reported they had smelled an absent partner’s clothing because it made them feel relaxed or secure.

Smelling the shirt of your partner can improve the quality of sleep, suggests new research. The research was conducted by researchers of the University of British Columbia. The researchers found that study participants who were exposed to their partner’s scent overnight experienced better sleep quality, even though their partner was not physically present. “Our findings provide new evidence that merely sleeping with a partner’s scent improves sleep efficiency. Our participants had an average sleep efficiency improvement of more than two per cent,” said the lead researcher, Marlise Hofer. “We saw an effect similar in size to what has been reported from taking oral melatonin supplements -- often used as a sleep aid,” added Hofer. For the study, the researchers analyzed sleep data from 155 participants who were given two identical-looking t-shirts to use as pillowcases -- one had been previously worn by their romantic partner, and the other had either been previously worn by a stranger or was clean. To capture body odour on the t-shirts, the participants’ partners were given a clean t-shirt to wear for 24 hours, and were asked to refrain from using deodorant and scented body products, smoking, exercising and eating certain foods that could affect their body odour. The t-shirts were then frozen to preserve their scent.

esearchers after a new study have found out that stress can impact aspects of the thinking process of humans including problemsolving. The study was conducted by the researchers of the University Of Missouri School Of Medicine and the MU Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders and has been published in the journal - NeuroImage. Researchers discovered a potential indicator of how stress affects the brain and alters its ability to solve the problem. These findings could ultimately help in understanding and optimizing the treatment for patients suffering from stressrelated illnesses. The results come from two companion studies involving 45 healthy college-age individuals who were genetically tested for the presence of at least one copy of a variation in the serotonin t r a n s p o r t e r g e n e ( S E RT ) , which is associated with greater

jumpsuit and the related analysis method applied to seven-month-old infants was published in the Scientific Reports journal. In the future, the jumpsuit can also be used to study older children. The quantitative tracking of children’s spontaneous motility in the natural environment has not been possible. Instead, children have been primarily qualitatively assessed at the physician’s or physiotherapist’s practice, which requires taking into account the fact that the infant’s behavior in the practice setting does not necessarily entirely match that seen at home. “The smart jumpsuit provides us with the first opportunity to quantify infants’ spontaneous and voluntary movements outside the laboratory. The child can be sent back home with the suit for the rest of the day.

group of researchers from Japan carried out an experiment to study the stress-relieving effects that plants can potentially have on employees at a busy workplace. The experts conducted their study on the employees of a Japanese electric company to figure out the variations in their stress levels, before and after a 3-minute long involvement with a plant.

Stress impacts the thinking process! Researchers after a new study have found out that stress can impact aspects of the thinking process of humans including problem-solving. susceptibility to stress. Participants for the study were given a series of tests while being monitored by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The first test involved verbal processing tasks where participants were asked in two sessions (stress and no-stress control) how many items from a category they could name in a minute.

Green tea extract combined with exercise may reduce fatty liver: Study

In a recent study, researchers have come up with a potential health strategy to combat fatty liver disease. They have found that a combination of green tea extract and exercise reduced the severity of the obesity-related disease by 75 per cent in mice fed a high-fat diet. The outcome is important, explained Joshua Lambert, associate professor of food science, because nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is a significant global health problem that is expected to worsen.

The study which got published in the journal HortTechnology revealed a slight drop in the anxiety score of employees with anxiety and a considerable drop in the resting heart rates of the other 27 per cent. The previous research on this subject was mostly carried out in controlled settings involving indirect plant interaction.

OFFBEAT

Follow Elon Musk’s Advice and Skip the MBA. Read These 10 Books Instead Getting a top-tier MBA has always been an expensive proposition, setting you back something like $200,000 between tuition and living expenses (not to mention lost income). This year there may be even more reason to think long and hard before going to business school. First, you'll face unusually stiff competition. Applications at top schools are way up as people look for shelter from

the economic storm caused by Covid. Plus, the virus may continue to disrupt in-person instruction, so you could end up battling your way in just to study online. But there's another fundamental reason you might want to give business school a miss, this year or any other. For many, a biz degree is simply a waste of money. Just ask Elon Musk.

Skills beat degrees.

As my Inc.com colleague Jeff Haden noted in a recent column, the Tesla and SpaceX boss (and newly crowned world's richest man) thinks too many companies are run by MBAs. "There should be more focus on the product or service itself, less time on board meetings, less time on financials," Musk said. Instead of going to school to master back-office intricacies, he encourages would-be business leaders to focus on learning what it takes to actually make things. That belief is reflected in his approach to hiring -- Musk focuses on skills not degrees, and isn't bothered by candidates without formal credentials. (1) Asking the Right Questions: A Guide to Critical Thinking by M. Neil Browne. This book "helps bridge the gap between simply memorizing or blindly accepting information, and the greater challenge of critical analysis and synthesis," according to Amazon. (2) Organizational Culture and Leadership by Edgar H. Schein. A classic textbook on, you guessed it, organizational culture and leadership. (3) Essentials of Organizational Behavior by Stephen P. Robbins. This textbook is now in its 14th edition, so figure it must be pretty useful. (4) The Management of Innovation by G. M. Stalker and Tom Burns. Published in 1961, this is "one of the most influential books about business organizations ever," Amazon claims. (5) Business Finance: Theory and Practice by Eddie McLaney. Save yourself even more by checking the older editions of this one -- the price drops from $75 to $3. (6) A Theory of Human Motivation by A. H. Maslow. Heard

of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs? This is where the idea comes from. (7) Critical Analysis of Organizations: Theory, Practice, Revitalization by Catherine Casey. This doesn't look like a light read at all but it tackles an interesting theme: new, critical takes on the subject of organizations and how people behave within them. (8) Defining Moments: When Managers Must Choose Between Right and Right by Joseph Badaracco. A discussion of navigating those moments when your business and values are in conflict. (9) Business Intelligence and Analytics: Systems for Decision Support by Efraim Turban. "The only comprehensive, up-to-date guide to today's revolutionary management support system technologies," says Amazon. (10) Corporate Finance by Jeffrey F. Jaffe, Stephen A. Ross, Randolph Westerfield. Another classic textbook, now in its 11th edition.

NASA Scientist Swati Mohan's Bindi Creates A Buzz On Twitter Touchdown confirmed," said operations lead Dr Swati Mohan at around 3:55 PM Eastern Time (2055 GMT), as mission control at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena erupted in cheers. A video of the moment, released by NASA, shows Dr Mohan wearing a small bindi on her forehead - a detail that was quickly picked up on and became a talking point on desi Twitter. Dr Mohan emigrated to the US from India when she was only a year old. Raised in Northern Virginia and Washington DC metro area, she completed her bachelor's degree from Cornell University in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, and her M.S. and Ph.D from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Aeronautics/Astronautics. The tiny bindi she wore generated a huge buzz on social media.

Thanks to the internet, anything we could ever want to know is just a tap of the smartphone away. But there’s a huge gulf between knowing something and understanding it. Perhaps no one articulated this difference better than Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman, who explained it like this: “See that bird? It’s a brown-throated thrush, but in Germany it’s called a halsenflugel, and in Chinese they call it a chung ling and even if you know all those names for it, you still know nothing about the bird–you only know something about people; what they call that bird.” The importance of learning Stanford University psychology professor Carol Dweck theorizes that there are two types of mindsets: growth and fixed. A growth mindset is the idea that we can improve our brain’s capacity to learn and solve problems, while a fixed mindset is the belief that our intelligence is static and unchanging. In a piece at Harvard Business Review, John Coleman wrote that we’re all born with a natural curiosity, but the demands of work and life often diminish our time and will to foster that natural curiosity. “Developing specific learning habits — consciously established and conscientiously cultivated — can be a route to both continued professional relevance and deep personal happiness,” he writes. Charlie Munger, billionaire business partner of Warren Buffet point was that there are two types of knowledge: “Chauffeur knowledge,” which is superficially talking the talk, and “Planck knowledge,” which is held by those who really know a topic to its core. As Albert Einstein put it: “Any fool can know. The point is to understand.” Feynman’s technique Feynman’s work as a physicist may have been mind-bendingly complex, but his learning technique was anything but. The premise is this: In simple terms, explain what you’re trying to learn, then find the gaps in your knowledge. He breaks it down into four steps: 1. Pick a topic Identify a new subject or concept you’re interested in mastering, and write it on a blank sheet of paper. Study up on the subject by reading books, articles and listening to podcasts. Add to your page whenever you learn something new about the subject. 2. Teach someone else Come up with an explanation for the subject, making it as clear and simple as possible. Pretend you’re teaching it to a classroom full of sixth graders, who have enough vocabulary and attention span to understand basic concepts, but would be lost if you fall back on jargon. Teaching something to someone else helps you learn, but the process of retrieving it from your memory also cements what you already know. I learned this firsthand when I took three months off from my company, JotForm, after my wife gave birth to our second child. In order to delegate my responsibilities to my colleagues, I had to refresh and deepen my own knowledge of my job. 3. Simplify Review your notes to make sure they’re jargon-free. Organize them into a simple narrative that’s straightforward to share, and keep studying it until you can explain your topic in basic terms. Of course, some concepts will be more complex than others. To master these, break down the topic into smaller explanations, rather than trying to cram them all into one. Remember: Simplicity is key. 4. Do it again Even a really good explanation can be simplified further. Explain it again, to someone else, revisit your source material and keep revising your explanation.

The Best Posture Correctors to Put a Stop to Your Slouch

Google fires second AI ethics leader as dispute over research, diversity grows Dyson study finds plethora of allergens and bacteria in ‘clean’ Indian home Google fired staff scientist Margaret Mitchell

Best Overall Upright GO 2 The most effective way to keep your back straight is to have someone tap you on the shoulder every time you're hunched over, allowing you not a moment of slouched peace. Not everyone can have that (annoying) luxury, but the Upright Go 2 (8/10 WIRED Recommends) does the same thing. It's a little rectangular device you place on your back via an adhesive strip or necklace that vibrates when your back reaches a specific angle. You need to calibrate the app so it knows what your slouching and upright positions are instead of vibrating at any normal movement. It might sound like the human version of a shock collar, but even at its highest setting, the vibration still feels gentle. No jolts here. It's expensive, but this has been the only device that managed to make me think about my posture even when I'm not wearing it. I can deal with a slightly uncomfortable brace rubbing against my shoulder, but it's hard to ignore an annoying vibration. Plus, it's easy to conceal.

Alphabet Inc’s Google fired staff scientist Margaret Mitchell on Friday, they both said, a move that fanned company divisions on academic freedom and diversity that were on display since its December dismissal of AI ethics researcher Timnit Gebru. Google said in a statement Mitchell violated the company’s code of conduct and security policies by moving electronic files outside the company. Mitchell, who announced her firing on Twitter, did not respond to a request

for comment. Google’s ethics in artificial intelligence work has been under scrutiny since the firing of Gebru, a scientist who gained prominence for exposing bias in facial analysis systems. The dismissal prompted thousands of Google workers to protest. She and Mitchell had called for greater diversity and inclusion among Google’s research staff and expressed concern that the company was starting to censor papers critical of its products.

Facebook takes down main page of Myanmar military

The Myanmar military is known as the Tatmadaw. Its True News page was no available on Sunday.

Facebook on Sunday deleted the main page of the Myanmar military under its standards prohibiting the incitement of violence, the company said, a day after two protesters were killed when police opened fire at a demonstration against the Feb 1 coup. “In line with our global policies, we’ve removed the Tatmadaw True

News Information Team Page from Facebook for repeated violations of our Community Standards prohibiting incitement of violence and coordinating harm,” a Facebook representative said in a statement. The Myanmar military is known as the Tatmadaw. Its True News page was not available on Sunday.

The best running shoes for any budget in 2021

A Dyson study has revealed that Indian households may not be as clean as we think. As per the study carried out by FICCI Research and Analysis Centre (FRAC) and commissioned by Dyson, Indian households have dust, which includes cockroach allergens, dust mites allergens, dog allergens, mould, bacteria and fungi, on

surfaces where we eat, sit, play and sleep, even after being cleaned regularly using the traditional methods. The company says that many of these particles are not visible to the naked eye and can only be seen using a microscope. The result is based on the study conducted in around 100 households across Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. The Dyson Global Dust Study even found that “1 in 5 were surprised to discover that viruses can be present in household dust 4 and less than 5% know that dust mites and their faeces are constituents of dust at all. In reality, house dust mite faeces are considered the most important inducers of allergenic diseases worldwide.” Dyson, which is known for offering premium vacuum cleaners, advises people to use relevant technology to remove the bacteria, pollen and dust mite allergens found in dust.

Nike ZOOM AlphaFly Next The fastest marathon racing shoe on the planet

HOKA Rincon 2

Another excellent HOKA shoe that’s recently been given a minor upgrade, the new Rincon 2 (£105) has a lot that’s familiar with the Carbon X in the way these feel on the run. There’s no plate in the Rincon, but the profile is pretty close and the Rincon are actually lighter than the Carbon X racer (below). That creates a shoe that’s light, soft and fast, versatile enough to cope when you pick up the pace on tempo runs but also provides ample cushioning for easy cruising miles. The lightweight EVA foam midsole features HOKA’s MetaRocker for smooth transitions but it’s less pronounced than on some and in tandem with a fairly wide stack of that midsole cushioning, brings a decent amount of stability that can even cope with light off-roading. Though be warned, that sole has a tendency to wear down pretty quickly.

Heel drop: 4mm | Weight: 232g (UK size 9 mens) 210g (UK size 10 womens) Worn by Eliud Kichoge to break the 2-hour marathon the Nike ZOOM AlphaFly Next% (from £260) is probably the most controversial running shoe ever. Deemed by some just too good to be fair, it just about avoided a ban at the Olympics and now it has a consumer version for serious marathon racers to chase personal bests when marathon racing eventually returns. The AlphaFly is undoubtedly a step on from the Vaporfly Next too. It still comes with a familiar combination of that big stack of high-energy return ZOOM X foam cushioning and a foot-long carbon fibre plate but there's also now an Air Zoom pod in the midsole that offers additional firmness and an even more propulsive feel in the toe off. The uppers have been upgraded too with a new breathable featherweight AtomKnit weave.
