America to bolster Europe fuel supply amid Russian threat HiIndia Newsdesk

T

European allies have been cautious in public about how far they would go in placing severe sanctions on Moscow if it invades Ukraine

he Biden administration announced on Tuesday that it was working with gas and crude oil suppliers from West Asia, North Africa and Asia to bolster supplies to Europe in the coming weeks, in an effort to blunt the threat that Russia could cut off fuel shipments in the escalating conflict over Ukraine. European allies have been cautious in public about how far they would go in placing severe sanctions on Moscow if it invades Ukraine. Germany has been especially wary; it has shuttered many of its nuclear plants, increasing its dependence on natural gas imports to generate electricity. Many European officials have said they suspect President Putin instigated the current crisis in the depths of winter for a reason, calculating that he has more leverage if he can threaten to turn off Russian fuel sales to Europe.

Biden expected to nominate a black woman to the Supreme Court HiIndia Newsdesk

The decision by Justice Stephen G. Breyer to retire will give Biden his most highprofile opportunity since taking office to reshape the federal judiciary, having already nominated dozens of district and appeals court judges from a range of racial, ethnic and legal backgrounds. President Joe Biden and his legal team have spent a year preparing for this moment: the chance to make good on his pledge to name the first Black woman to the Supreme Court at a time of continuing racial reckoning for the country. The decision by Justice Stephen G. Breyer to retire will give Biden his most highprofile opportunity since taking office to reshape the federal judiciary, having

already nominated dozens of district and appeals court judges from a range of racial, ethnic and legal backgrounds. His promise also underscores how much Black women have struggled to become part of a very small pool of elite judges in the nation’s higher federal courts. Speculation on Wednesday focused on a rarefied group of well-credentialed Black women who have elite educations and experience on the bench.

Sexual Harassment A Crime Now In US Military After Joe Biden Order HiIndia Newsdesk

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the order “honors the memory of Army Specialist Vanessa Guillen,”

Washington: US President Joe Biden signed an executive order Wednesday making sexual harassment a crime under the military justice code, in an attempt to relieve a long-term issue with which the Pentagon has struggled. The move, called for in the 2022 National Defense Authorization Act, the Pentagon’s annual budget package, pays homage to Vanessa Guillen. The 20-year-old army soldier was murdered by a fellow soldier in 2020 after being sexually harassed and telling her family she did not trust the military command to follow up on her complaint. White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the order “honors the memory of Army Specialist Vanessa Guillen,” whose death is “catalyzing national attention to the scourge of sexual violence in our military and helping advance bipartisan military justice reform.”

China Warns US

Over Ukraine, “Interfering” In Beijing Winter Olympics HiIndia Newsdesk

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi says

Global concerns are growing over a potential Russian invasion of Ukraine, as tens of thousands of Russian troops have been stationed at the border in recent weeks.

Beijing: China’s top diplomat spoke with his US counterpart on Thursday, warning Washington to “stop interfering” in the Winter Olympics and stressing that Russia’s security concerns in Europe should be “taken seriously”. Beijing hopes to turn next week’s Games into a soft power triumph. But the lead-up has been clouded by a US-led diplomatic boycott over China’s human rights record, particularly towards its Uyghur Muslim minority in the Xinjiang region. “The most urgent priority right now is that the US should stop interfering in the Beijing Winter Olympics,” foreign minister Wang Yi said during a call with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, according to a foreign ministry statement.

Russia, Ukraine Agree to Keep Ceasefire, New Talks Next Month

oscow and Kyiv on Wednesday agreed at talks in Paris that all parties should observe a ceasefire in the east of Ukraine after more than eight hours of discussions which were hailed by a French diplomat as sending a “good signal.” A Russian troop build-up close to the border with east of Ukraine has raised fears the Kremlin is planning military intervention in its pro-EU neighbor as Moscow presses demands over NATO’s presence in eastern Europe. An aide to French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking on condition of anonymity, stressed that the Paris talks had been about resolving the separatist fighting in eastern Ukraine since 2014, not the threat of a Russian invasion. But “the question was

whether the Russians wanted to signal a thaw,” he said, adding that the “difficult” discussions had ultimately resulted in something positive. “In the current circumstances, we received a good signal,” he said. For the first time since 2019, Ukraine and Russia agreed to sign a joint statement along with France and Germany about the ongoing conflict between Ukrainian forces and separatists in the east of the country. The four nations have been working towards reaching a peace deal for eastern Ukraine since 2014 and are known collectively as the Normandy Group. “However difficult the discussions have been since December 2019, the Normandy Group has been able to agree on several key points,” the French aide said.

Face coverings and Covid passes are no longer legally required in England, after the relaxation of Plan B rules came into affect on Thursday. Health Secretary Sajid Javid said the measures could be lifted due to the vaccine rollout’s success and a better understanding of Covid treatments. The PM’s official spokesman said mask wearing would now be “a matter of personal judgment”. But some shops have said they will continue to ask people to wear them. Rail operators also said passengers would be expected to wear face coverings. But all said they would encourage, not force, customers to comply. London Mayor Sadiq Khan has said masks will remain mandatory on Transport for London services, calling on people to “do the right thing”. Public health guidance urging people to wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed spaces when coming into contact strangers will remain, the government said. Organisations will also be able to choose if they require Covid passes from those visiting their venues.

UK ‘not optimistic’ Russian invasion can be stopped HiIndia Newsdesk

UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace is in Europe to build momentum for sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine amid fears of another invasion. Mr Wallace has also confirmed that he’ll soon be travelling to Moscow for talks with Russia’s Defence Minister, Sergei Shoigu. But he’s lowering expectations of any diplomatic breakthrough. He told the BBC there’s still “a chance” that an invasion by Russia could be stopped, but he added “I’m not optimistic”.

Boris Johnson has sent his Republic Day greetings to India even as he waited for the report into “Partygate” by senior civil servant Sue Gray that may determine the future of his premiership. There has been an ominous quote from a senior “source” which predicted: “Put it this way, if Boris Johnson is still Prime Minister by the end of the week, I’d be very surprised.” With a message that showed the Union flag entwined with the Indian tricolour, Boris said: “The UK and India are tied by bonds that span over decades, through generations and across some of the greatest challenges we have faced. “I want to send my best wishes from the UK to the people of India, and to all British Indians, on India’s Republic Day.”

Russia warned on Wednesday that imposing sanctions on President Vladimir Putin personally would not hurt him but would be “politically destructive”, after US President Joe Biden said he would consider such a move if Russia invaded Ukraine. Biden said on Tuesday that personal sanctions on Putin, though a rare step, could be considered as part of a concerted drive by Washington and its allies to convince Moscow that any new aggression against Ukraine would bring swift and massive costs.

In recent days Germany — Europe’s largest and richest democracy — has stood out more for what it will not do than for what it is doing. No European country matters more to European unity and the western alliance. n an open letter addressed to the public, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday slammed the Uttar Pradesh government over a range of issues, terming the current phase as “half income, double inflation”, adding that the present government has only brought “difficulties and troubles”. “Apart from the poor and oppressed, the skilled and unskilled workers, unemployed youths, people who have been sacked from their job due to the dire state of the economy, businessmen, industrialists and farmers have also been suffering due to the current phase of ‘half income, double inflation’. Actually, since the present government came into power, it has only brought difficulties and troubles,” reads the letter written in Hindi by the SP chief. The former UP Chief Minister posted the letter on Twitter on the occasion of Republic Day on Wednesday. Mr Yadav urged people to pledge on Republic Day to “save the constitution which led to the formation of this great republic.” “To bring the positive change, let’s move forward with the positive, progressive and practical politics that does not favour only a sect of people but takes everyone together,” Mr Yadav said. “This government has divided society into two parts. On one hand, there are people who are continuously getting richer and on the other hand, there are people who are continuously getting poorer. Even among the wealthy, only a few persons are cornering wealth. The middle class is getting crushed in the middle. Their savings and interest on which their future depends are also not safe in banks,” he added.

Russia-China warmth makes Delhi walk the tightrope on Ukraine

HiIndia Newsdesk

n January 19, US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman called up Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla and they discussed “Russia’s concerning military build-up on Ukraine’s borders”. However, Delhi is yet to issue an official statement on the matter, choosing to closely monitor the developments as of now. Officials here said that with key strategic partners on both sides, any hasty moves may shrink the already tight diplomatic space Delhi has. So while there is concern about Russia’s “muscle-flexing” and external intervention in national matters, New Delhi does not want to jeopardise its equation with Moscow. Almost 60 per cent of India’s

military supplies are Russian-manufactured, a significant factor when Indian and Chinese troops continue to be in a stand-off on the eastern border. At the same time, the US and Europe, which are pushing back against Russia over Ukraine, are both important partners from India’s strategic calculus. Many US platforms have been used for reconnaissance and surveillance along the India-China border. Winter clothing for 50,000 troops has been sourced from these Western strategic partners. India is also conscious that the hostility between the West and Russia, with talks of sanctions being considered, is likely to push Moscow in the direction of Beijing, hence strengthening the Chinese.

“Merging, Not Extinguishing” Flame At India Gate For Soldiers: Centre

The eternal flame, which has been burning at India Gate for 50 years, will be merged with the torch at War Memorial in a ceremony today afternoon.

Amar Jawan Jyoti: Opp slams Centre The Opposition strongly hit out at the Centre for its decision to “extinguish” the eternal flame of the Amar Jawan Jyoti as it is to be merged with the National War Memorial on Friday. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi slammed the move, saying “some people cannot understand patriotism”. However, government sources said there was “a lot of misinformation” over the decision. “It is a matter of great sadness that the immortal flame that used to burn for our brave soldiers will be extinguished today. Some people cannot understand patriotism and sacrifice – never mind… We will once again light the Amar Jawan Jyoti for our soldiers!” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

he Amar Jawan Jyoti or the “eternal flame” for soldiers at India Gate will be put out after 50 years and merged with the torch at the National War Memorial in a ceremony today. A part of the flame will be carried to the war memorial this afternoon. Amid sharp criticism of the move, the government said a “lot of misinformation” was circulating. “The flame of the Amar Jawan Jyoti is not being extinguished. It is being merged with the flame at the National War Memorial. It was an odd thing to see that the flame at Amar Jawan Jyoti paid homage to the martyrs of the 1971 and other wars but none of their names are present there,” said government sources. The India Gate was built by the British in the memory of soldiers of the British Indian Army who died in World War-I. The Amar Jawan Jyoti was placed under the India

Gate in 1971, when the Indira Gandhi-led Congress government was in power. The names inscribed on the India Gate are those who fought for for the British in the World War-I and Anglo Afghan War, said the government, describing it as “a symbol of our colonial past”. The sources argued that the names of Indian soldiers who died in wars after Independence, including the 1971 war, are engraved at the National War Memorial. “It is a true shraddhanjali (tribute) to have the flame paying tribute to martyrs there,” they said. Targeting Opposition leaders who have slammed the government on the move, the government sources said it is “ironic that people who did not make a National War Memorial for 7 decades are now making a hue and cry when a permanent and fitting tribute is being made to our martyrs”.

fter two successful seasons of SonyLIV’s Your Honor, National Award-winning director E Niwas has quietly moved on to his next. Word is that the director is helming a web series, titled Donali, a revenge drama about the Chambal dacoits in the 1960s. The eight-part drama features Chunky Panday, Divyenndu, Sandhya Mridul with Barun Sobti playing a pivotal role. A trade source reveals that Niwas shot a major chunk of the Applause Entertainment and Juggernaut-backed production in Chambal intermittently over the past two years. “The team started shooting in the ravines of Chambals after the first wave had waned in 2020 and the lockdown was lifted, followed by a few more schedules in 2021. Almost 80 per cent of the series is now complete. The next stint will kick off on January 25 in Mumbai. Post that, the team will head to Wai and Gwalior before calling it a wrap on the project,” says the source. Co-chief executive officer and chief content officer for the streaming service Ted Sarandos confirmed Squid Game season 2 during Netflix’s fourth-quarter interview as per Variety.

T

he second season of Netflix’s megahit South Korean TV series Squid Game is officially confirmed. Co-chief executive officer and chief content officer for the streaming service Ted Sarandos confirmed the same during Netflix’s fourth-quarter interview as per Variety. When asked whether it is in the pipeline, he replied, “Absolutely. The ‘Squid Game’ universe has just begun.” Sarandos’ comment implies a whole new small screen universe based solely on that show may also be in the works. Written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the survival drama series featured a contest similar to Battle Royale in which debt-

ridden people could compete in games to win a grand prize of 45.6 billion won ($38.6 million or more than Rs 2 billion). The games in the contest were childhood games played in South Korea. The catch was, those eliminated in every round will not just go home empty-handed, they will be killed. As per the mysterious creators of the game, it was fairer than the daily game the participants play in the real world. Here, the wealth was guaranteed if one were clever and ruthless enough — which was not true outside the game. The show was interpreted as a trenchant critique of modern capitalistic societies and that economic mobility was just a myth perpetuated by the moneyed classes.

Big Money Continues To Drive Sale of Electoral Bonds, Reveals Data From SBI, DEA

E

ven as two petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the electoral bonds are awaiting adjudication in the Supreme Court, data obtained through the Right to Information Act has revealed that in the 18 phases of sale of these bonds over four years – from 2018 to 2021 – over 92% of the bonds sold were of the Rs 1 crore denomination. This, transparency activists insist, shows that most of the large anonymous political donations through the scheme are from big companies eyeing bigger returns. So far there have been 19 tranches of sale of electoral bonds, through designated branches of the State Bank of India. The last round of sale took place from January 1 to 10 this year. According to data gathered by RTI activist Commodore Lokesh K. Batra (retired), in the last four years 15,420 electoral bonds worth nearly Rs 7,995 crore were sold (Rs 7994,97,75,000 to be precise). Of these, 15,274 electoral bonds worth over Rs 7,974 crore were encashed. So only bonds worth a little over Rs 20 crore remained uncashed. These were subsequently transferred to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. In response to an RTI application filed by Batra on October 28, 2021, the State Bank of India informed him on November 18 that in the last four years – 2018 to 2021 – during the sale period of the 18 tranches or phases, the electoral bonds were sold through 17 of its branches. The data revealed that nearly 80% of the bonds were sold in just four cities – Mumbai (26.86%), Kolkata (25.04%), New Delhi (14.33%) and Hyderabad (13.86%). After this, nearly 18% of the bonds were

encashed in the New Delhi Main Branch, followed by nearly Rs 825 crore in Hyderabad Main Branch, Rs 561 crore in the Kolkata Main Branch and Rs 554 crore in the Bhubaneswar Main Branch. As for the denomination-wise electoral bonds sold in various branches, the SBI data revealed that the largest number of bonds were sold in Kolkata (4,911), following by Mumbai (3,201), New Delhi (2,055) and Hyderabad (1,878). From the Department of Economic Affairs, Batra also learnt that a total of 6,64,250 electoral bond forms were printed and of these 2,65,000 each were of Rs 1,000 and Rs 10,000 denomination each, 93,000 were of Rs 10,000 denomination, 26,600 were of Rs 10 lakh denomination and 14,650 were of Rs 1 crore denomination. In response to an RTI filed by Batra on October 28, 2021, the DEA responded on November 19 with the details of the printing of electoral bonds. It said a total amount of Rs 1.86 crore (Rs 1,86,05,720 to be precise) had been paid till that day towards printing of electoral bonds. Further, the DEA said “the amount for printing of EBs was paid from the budgetary head ‘2052 Secretariat General Services’ under demand number 27 of the department for the financial year 2019-20". In this tweet, he said, while the petitions remain unheard for more than three years, this has permitted BJP to display obscene money power.

Evicting Peng Shuai t-shirts brings to focus Aus Open’s sponsorship deal with Chinese money Tennis Australia (TA) defended its stance by saying: “Under our ticket conditions of entry, we don’t allow clothing, banners or signs that are commercial or political.” HiIndia Newsdesk

Peng Shul had earlier accused a top Chinese official of assault ("forced to have sex" and myriad emotional abuse) in a post that was taken down by Chinese authorieis.

rew Pavlou, an Australian activist and Senate candidate from Queensland who is an avowed critic of the Chinese Communist Party, told Sydney radio show host Luke Grants on Monday, “I can’t believe they are trying to extend their political censorship to Australia.” A day earlier, police had stopped a couple of spectators at the Australian Open (AO) for donning t-shirts which had the words

‘Wanted’ and ‘Missing’ inscribed on front with a picture of Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai embossed. At the back was the question “Where is Peng Shuai?” that has resonated through the tennis world. Asked to remove what the authorities dubbed objectionable attire and then evict them from Melbourne Park, Tennis Australia would back up the cops’ action, with their reasoning: “Under our ticket conditions of entry, we don’t allow clothing, banners or signs that are commercial or political.” This turned the two activists, Pavlou and Hong Kong prodemocracy campaigner Max Mok, determined to make their support of Shuai heard, and Saturday’s women’s final can turn into a flashpoint if the 1,000 similar t-shirts the duo procured make their way into the stadium. Pavlou said, “Look, Peng Shuai was a huge news tidal wave, but it died away, as things go,” adding, “We just wanted to bring the conversation back with Australian Open because WTA has taken a very strong stand not allowing tournaments to be hosted in China. Sadly, Tennis Australia did not take a very strong stand. It turns out they take 25 million US dollars in annual sponsorship from Chinese corporates. And that may be linked to it.”

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova Monday called a decision by Australian Open organisers to prevent fans wearing

Tournament organisers on Sunday said Peng's safety was "our primary concern" after video emerged of security staff appearing to order spectators to remove shirts and a banner in support of the Chinese player. The former doubles world number one is absent from the Grand Slam and there are fears for her wellbeing after she alleged online in November that she had been "forced" into sex by a Chinese former vice-premier during a years-long on-and-off relationship.

India's head coach Rahul Dravid on Sunday admitted that his team didn't play "smart cricket at crucial times" but backed the beleaguered KL Rahul to get better as a leader in coming days. India lost both the Test and ODI series in what turned out to be a disastrous tour of South Africa despite a bright start in the opening Test at Centurion, which the team won comprehensively. "He did a good job. It's not easy to end on wrong side of the result," Dravid said when asked how he found Rahul as a leader, having lost all four games that he captained on tour. "He is just starting out and I think he did a very decent job. He will constantly get better as he captains," the head coach batted for the young skipper. KL Rahul-led India lost all three ODIs to South Africa in the threematch series.

Indian-American cop hailed as hero for neutralising gunman who killed officer HiIndia Newsdesk

New York City Police Officer Sumit Sulan.

New York: An Indian-American police officer, who has been on the job for just over six months, is being hailed a hero for rushing to neutralise a gunman who shot a police officer and wounded another. Sumit Sulan, 27, shot the assailant who surprised the officers opening fire on them in his mother’s flat on January 21 where police were called because of a domestic dispute. Jason Rivera, 22, was killed and Wilbert Mora, 27, was wounded, but Sulan who was in the police party advanced and shot the alleged gunman, Lashawn McNeil, 47, according to police. McNeil is in hospital with serious injuries. Before taking on the gunman, Sulan had moved the mother and her other son to safety, police said. Sulan and his two colleagues had gone to the flat in the Harlem neighbourhood in response to a call by McNeil’s mother that her son was threatening her. He had a close escape when he rushed to take on McNeil as the man allegedly was firing with a super-charged weapon – a modified Glock pistol fitted with a highcapacity drum with 50 rounds, turning it into a virtual machine gun. His mother Dalvir Sulan told the New York Post: “I’m proud. Everyone (says) he did good.”

She said that he was still struggling to deal with the events and “his brain is stuck on the situation”. According to her, the family had immigrated to the US about 15 years ago from India. Sumit Sulan, who entered the police force only in April 2021, has been nicknamed “Super Rookie”, according to the Post. He had worked for the city as a taxi and limousine inspector before joining the police. Sumit Sulan had responded earlier this month to a domestic violence incident during which a gun was seized, his police station tweeted with a picture of him holding the weapon. They are a direct challenge to Mayor Eric Adams, a former police captain, who took office on New Year’s Day with a promise to crack down on crime. He called the shooting of the police officers an “attack on the city”. Police have come under sustained attack around the country from the Democratic Party’s left and its supporters with a sustained movement to either abolish or cut the police force in a campaign that started in May 2020 after the killing of an African-American by police in Minnesota.

Equality Lab’s executive director Thenmozhi Soundararajan, in a press release called CSU’s decision a historic win, and credited “the tireless efforts of the student-led interfaith and inter-caste initiative.” Noting that “the movement for caste equity in the United States is growing exponentially as caste-oppressed Americans and allies bravely organize for our rights,” she added her organization looks forward “to working with CSU campuses to help implement this historic win.” In the press release, Manmit Singh, a student at San Francisco State University said the victory “has shown the power of an interfaith, inter-caste, and multiracial coalition.”

WA S H I N G T O N , D C - U. S . Citizenship and Immigration S er vices today issued polic y guidance clarifying how it evaluates evidence to determine eligibility for O-1A nonimmig rants of extraordinary ability, with a focus on petitions filed for individuals in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) fields, as well as how USCIS determines whether an O-1 beneficiary’s prospective work is within their area of extraordinary ability or achievement. Individuals of extraordinary ability in the sciences, education, business, or athletics may be eligible for O-1A classification. The new update provides examples of evidence that may satisfy the O-1A evidentiary criteria and discusses considerations that are relevant to evaluating such evidence, with a focus on the highly technical nature of STEM fields and the complexity of the evidence often submitted. The update also emphasizes that, if a petitioner demonstrates that a particular criterion does not readily apply to their occupation, they may submit evidence that is of comparable significance to that criterion to establish sustained acclaim and recognition, and it provides examples of possible comparable evidence that may be submitted in support of petitions for beneficiaries working in STEM fields. In addition, the update explains that when evaluating whether an individual of extraordinary ability is coming to work in their “area of extraordinary ability,” officers will focus on whether the prospective work involves skillsets, knowledge, or expertise shared with the occupation(s) in which the individual garnered acclaim.

NEW YORK, NY — Sickly, smoky odor caused on morning in New York, the cause was likely a fire burning miles away at a scrapyard in Newark, New Jersey. The fire broke out late Monday at the Eastern Metal Recycling Terminal in Newark, where it continued to burn as of Tuesday morning. In a Notify NYC alert, authorities said that smoke from the fire could be seen and smelled by residents of Manhattan and the Bronx. In fact, the odor seemed to travel further than that — as far as Astoria, Queens, and even further east in Forest Hills and College Point, according to Twitter users. “Currently commuting home from lower Manhattan and I can still smell it by city field,” one user wrote just before 7 a.m. “I just freaked out and called the fire department after running up and down the stairs in my building sniffing the air,” wrote another user in Lower Manhattan.

he BJP today announced its first lot of candidates for Goa with a big omission - Utpal Parrikar, the son of former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. The party has rejected Utpal Parrikar for his father’s seat Panaji and chosen Congress alum Atanasio “Babush” Monserrate instead. Utpal Parrikar is reportedly firm on contesting from Panaji and has refused the BJP’s offer of two other seats. “I will clear my stand soon,” he told reporters. The BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis said Utpal had been offered two other options. “We feel he should accept it. BJP has always given respect to the Parrikar Parivar,” Mr Fadnavis

said, hoping to stave off a revolt. But Utpal Parrikar could soon be spoilt for choice. He already has an offer from Arvind Kejriwal, who tweeted shortly after the BJP released its Goa list. “Goans feel very sad that BJP has adopted use-and-throw policy even with the Parrikar family. I have always respected Manohar Parrikar ji. Utpal ji is welcome to join and fight elections on AAP ticket,” Mr Kejriwal tweeted, sharing an NDTV report. Last week, Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut had appealed to opposition parties to support Utpal Parrikar if he fell out with the BJP and contested as an independent.

Bengaluru: The nearly three-week-long stand-off between a government college in Karnataka’s Udupi district and a handful of Muslim students who want to wear a hijab during classes escalated Thursday morning after they protested at the college gates with placards. “The fresh protests come a day after college authorities and district officials gave the students an ultimatum - fall in line with the dress code and receive an education, or wear one and go home. The protests also come after the state’s Education Minister BC Nagesh told the practice amounted to “indiscipline” and that schools and colleges were “not a place to practice dharma”.

ccording to a new study, watching TV for four hours a day or more is associated with a 35 per cent higher risk of blood clots compared with less than 2.5 hours. The research has been published in the 'European Journal of Preventive Cardiology'. "Our study findings also suggested that being physically active does not eliminate the increased risk of blood clots associated with prolonged TV watching," said lead author Dr Setor Kunutsor of the University of Bristol, UK. "If you are going to binge on TV you need to take breaks. You can stand and stretch every 30 minutes or use a stationary bike. And avoid combining television with unhealthy snacking," Kunutsor added. The study examined the association between TV viewing and venous thromboembolism (V TE). V TE includes pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs) and deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in a deep vein, usually the legs, which can travel to the lungs and cause pulmonary embolism) To conduct the study, the researchers conducted a systematic review to collect the available published evidence on the topic and then combined the results using a process called a meta-analysis. "Combining multiple studies in a metaanalysis provides a larger sample and makes the results more precise and reliable than the findings of an individual study," explained Dr Kunutsor. The analysis included three studies with a total of 131,421 participants aged 40 years and older without preexisting VTE. The amount of time spent watching TV was assessed by questionnaire and participants were categorised as prolonged viewers (watching TV at least four hours per day) and never/seldom viewers

Watching TV linked to potentially fatal blood clots

To conduct the study, the researchers conducted a systematic review to collect the available published evidence on the topic and then combined the results using a process called a meta-analysis (watching TV less than 2.5 hours per day). The average duration of follow-up in the three studies ranged from 5.1 to 19.8 years. During this period, 964 participants developed VTE. The researchers analysed the relative risk of developing VTE in prolonged versus never/seldom TV watchers. They found that prolonged viewers were 1.35 times more likely to develop VTE compared to never/seldom viewers. The association was independent of

age, sex, body mass index (BMI), and physical activity.. "All three studies adjusted for these factors since they are strongly related to the risk of VTE; for instance, older age, higher BMI, and physical inactivity are linked with an increased risk of VTE," said Dr Kunutsor. "The findings indicate that regardless of physical activity, your BMI, how old you are and your gender, watching many hours of television is a risky activity with regards to developing

If you are going to binge on TV you need to take breaks. You can stand and stretch every 30 minutes or use a stationary bike. And avoid combining television with unhealthy snacking blood clots," Dr Kunutsor added. Dr Kunutsor noted that the findings are based on observational studies and do not prove that extended TV watching causes blood clots. Regarding the possible reasons for the observed relationship, he said, "Prolonged TV viewing involves immobilisation which is a risk factor for VTE. This is why people are encouraged to move around after surgery or during a long-haul flight. In addition, when you sit in a cramped position for long periods, blood pools in your extremities rather than circulating and this can cause blood clots. Finally, binge-watchers tend to eat unhealthy snacks which may lead to obesity and high blood pressure which both raise the likelihood of blood clots." Dr Kunutsor concluded, "Our results suggest that we should limit the time we spend in front of the television. Long periods of TV watching should be interspersed with movement to keep the circulation going. Generally speaking, if you sit a lot in your daily life - for example, your work involves sitting for hours at a computer be sure to get up and move around from time to time."

Mosambi peels can help prevent cancer Covid-19:

New nasal spray effective against all variants Finnish researchers have developed a novel nasal spray that is effective against all variants of Covid and can prevent infection upto 8 hours. The nasal spray consists of a molecule, developed by researchers at the University of Helsinki, Finland, that can inactivate the coronavirus spike protein. Cell cultures and animal studies have shown that TriSb92 -- the new molecule -- protects against coronavirus infection for at least eight hours even in cases of high exposure risk. In contrast to vaccine protection, the effect of TriSb92 begins immediately after its administration.

The researchers at the School of Biochemical Engineering, IIT (BHU) have synthesized an eco-friendly and cost-effective adsorbent, which can remove toxic heavy metal ions such as hexavalent chromium from contaminated water and wastewater.

T

he modest 'mosambi or sweet lime can now be used to prevent cancer. Researchers at IIT (BHU) claim that the 'mosambi' (Citrus limetta) peels can be used to remove heavy metals from water and prevent cancer and other life-threatening ailments. The researchers at the School of Biochemical Engineering, IIT (BHU) have synthesized an eco-friendly and cost-effective adsorbent, which can remove toxic heavy metal ions such as hexavalent chromium from contaminated water and wastewater. Dr Vishal Mishra, associate professor, School of Biochemical Engineering and his student Veer Singh's study has already been published in the international journal 'Separation Science and Technology'. Mishra said that the hexavalent chromium is responsible for several types of health problems in humans like cancers, liver and kidney disease and liver malfunctioning, and skin problems. "This is a new eco-frienly product, synthesized from the Citrus limetta (mosambi) peels biomass. This adsorbent is very effective for removal of hexavalent chromium from waste water compared to other conventional methods and takes less time to separate hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution." According to Veer Singh, this adsorbent can be easily separated from the aqueous medium after the metal removal process. The researchers have tested the hexavalent chromium removal capacity of this adsorbent in synthetic simulated waste water and have got satisfactory results. The heavy metal removal efficiency of this adsorbent was also tested for other heavy metal ions, such as lead, copper and cadmium, and found emerging heavy metal removal efficiency of this adsorbent.

Covid-19:

AI-based X-rays with 98% accuracy may replace PCR tests Scottish researchers have developed new Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology based X-rays that can likely replace currently used PCR tests for detecting Covid-19 infections. The technology developed by experts at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), is capable of accurately diagnosing Covid-19 in just a few minutes -- far more quickly than a PCR test, which typically takes around 2 hours -and with 98 per cent accuracy.

How men’s designer fashion is evolving in India Men in saris, Ranveer Singh’s bold wardrobe picks and Ruchika Sachdeva’s debut into menswear— you can’t miss the new wave of men’s fashion in the country

M

ohammad Mazar, Anita Dongre and Rohit Bal explored Indian ethnic wear for men that looked beyond bandhgalas in neutral tones. Shivan & Narresh continued to promote a beach wardrobe for the metrosexual man; BoBo Calutta's embroidered renditions of the designer's artwork on garments were easy picks for gender agnostic clothing; and Label Anaam, whose very design philosophy stems from refuting gender roles, bravely sent saris on men down the runway. The refreshing wave of creativity is not limited to fashion runways. Leading men in Bollywood are

championing a bolder, more spontaneous identity too. If you need an example, Ranveer Singh's attention-grabbing looks hardly need an introduction. From the Manish Arora sherwani he wore to his post-wedding bash to all-out neons and icy blue fur jackets, Singh is constantly finding new ways to express his sartorial persona. Less obvious but equally dedicated is Shahid Kapoor, whose nuanced approach to dressing up has earned him spots on several best dressed lists. Meanwhile, the only styling direction Jim Sarbh follows is that of eclecticism—floral shirts, co-ord sets, elaborate sherwanis; there's nothing he isn't game for.

Ralph Lauren unveils Team USA’s opening Olympic uniforms Are you new to skincare?

Indulging in regular skincare is an essential way of ensuring the health of your skin. The process of nourishing and rejuvenating the skin is a mindful routine and varies from skin types to skin concerns. While people have their preferences over certain ingredients or beauty trends, there are many myths and misconceptions about a few ingredients found in common skin care products.

Chemicals

The word ‘chemical’ was predominantly used with a negative connotation in skin care but the reality is far from different. Partly a marketing gimmick, there is no reason to be afraid of chemicals in skincare ingredients, assured the Dermatologist. “One should know that everything is a chemical; the air we breathe, the water we drink, are all chemicals”, she added.

Fragrance

While some people may not like the smell of fragrances, not everyone is allergic to them. A certain amount of fragrance in skincare is not harmful and “you shouldn’t be scared”, said Dr Aanchal. She however emphasized,”People with sensitive skin, rosacea or disorders which make skin sensitive to the sun, should definitely avoid fragrance.”

RPN Singh quits Congress

On Foreign Funding Clearance For 6,000 NGOs, Setback In Supreme Court

The court was hearing a plea filed by US-based NGO “Global Peace Initiative” that argued NGOs had played a critical role in Covid relief HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today refused to grant interim relief on a plea challenging the government’s refusal to renew licenses needed to receive funding from abroad to 6,000 NonGovernmental Organisations, or NGOs. The court was hearing a plea filed by the US-based NGO Global Peace Initiative that said the cancellation of licences can have a debilitating effect on COVID-19 relief efforts as the country is battling its third wave of infections and the work done by many of these NGOs has helped millions of Indians so far. A bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar, Dinesh Maheshwari and CT Ravikumar took note of the Centre’s submission that 11,594 NGOs that applied for renewal within the deadline have already been given an extension.

former Union Minister RPN Singh quit the party today, amid reports that he is switching to the BJP, in a huge blow to the party just weeks before the Uttar Pradesh election. RPN Singh was among the party’s biggest leaders in Uttar Pradesh. He tweeted his resignation letter addressed to Sonia Gandhi. “Today, at a time, we are celebrating the formation of our great Republic, I begin a new chapter in my political journey. Jai Hind,” he wrote.

Modi again bats for ‘one nation, one election’

No point focusing on airports, keep close watch on clinical samples from ICU: Experts Only testing and tracking cannot prevent spread of the Omicron variant which is a fast spreading one, experts said HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed concern over low voting percentage, especially in urban areas considered educated and prosperous, and said this should change in a vibrant democracy like India. In an interaction with BJP workers from across the country, Modi also raised the issues of “one nation, one election” and “one nation, one voters’ list”, saying that continuous cycle of elections result in politics being seen in everything while development works suffer. His address coincided with the National Voters’ Day on Tuesday. While noting that the voting percentage rose from 45 per cent in the first Lok Sabha polls in 1951-52 to 67 per cent in 2019, he said the rise in woman voters participation was a good thing, but added that everyone from citizens to members of different political parties should think over low polling. Modi asked the BJP’s “panna pramukhs” and other ground workers to work to ensure 75 per cent polling in every election

With INSACOG stating that Omicron is in community transmission and has become dominant in multiple metros, experts have said that focus should be on sequencing clinical samples of those who are severely ill and keep a close watch on clusters. “We should change the strategy of sample collection for genome sequencing. There is no point in focusing on airports. A close watch should be kept on clinical

samples from the ICU or those with serious symptoms to check if there is further mutation of the SARS-CoV2 virus and whether it is changing a bit. There is a need to keep an eye on clusters at localities or parties or any gathering in case there is a sudden eruption of cases and also ensure a randomised sampling in large areas,” Dr Rakesh Mishra, former director of Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, said.

Amazon, Netflix Tie Up With Anushka Australia Set To Pakistan With Sharma’s Company In $54 Million Deal Tour Full-Strength Squad HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk

Amazon.com Inc. and Netflix Inc. are among platforms partnering with Indian production house Clean Slate Filmz Pvt. to push out movies and web series worth about 4 billion rupees ($54 million) as the battle for content heats up in one of the world’s largest entertainment markets. Clean Slate Filmz, based in the Bollywood heartland of Mumbai, will release eight films and series on these over-the-top streaming sites as well as some others in the next 18 months, the studio’s 37-yearold co-founder, Karnesh Ssharma, told Bloomberg. Ssharma declined to provide a full list before they were officially announced.

Australia are set to tour Pakistan with a full-strength squad as no player has so far expressed any reservation about travelling to the country which did not get to host top-flight international cricket for nearly a decade due to security concerns. The last time Pakistan had an ICC event on its soil was when it co-hosted the 1996 World Cup along with India and Sri Lanka. The terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in 2009 ensured Test cricket remained out of bounds until 2019.

“Stupid Son Of A B****” - Biden Caught On Hot Mic Mocking Reporter HiIndia Newsdesk

Washington: US President Joe Biden was caught on a live microphone Monday calling a Fox News journalist a “stupid son of a bitch” on the sidelines of a White House photo op. As journalists were leaving the room after the event, a reporter from Fox News, the favorite channel of conservatives, asked whether inflation is

a political liability. The Democratic leader, possibly unaware that his microphone was still on, began by deadpanning: “It’s a great asset. More inflation.” And then muttered, “What a stupid son of a bitch,” before glancing briefly down.

While our 4,00,00,000 brothers and sisters are pushed into poverty,” he said on Twitter. “Each of these 4,00,00,000 is a real person, not just a number. Each of these 4,00,00,000 deserved better. Brendan Taylor Admits To Being Approached By Indian Bookies

Agent sets Rs 1.65 crore with family Kalol’s Patel family found dead under snow cover on Canada border

HiIndia Newsdesk

Former Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor on Monday said is facing a multi-year ban from the ICC for failing to report a corrupt approach by an Indian businessman and also claimed that he was blackmailed after “foolishly” taking cocaine during that meeting. In a detailed confession on social media, Taylor claimed that he was invited by the businessman to India to discuss “sponsorships” and potential launch of a T20 event in Zimbabwe besides an offer of USD 15,000 in October, 2019. He did not name the businessman in question. “I was cornered. And with 6 of these individuals in my hotel room, I was scared for my own safety. I’d fallen for it. I’d willingly walked into a situation that has changed my life forever.” Taylor said he was also given a part payment to spot fix matches.
