Kashmir fury at India's plan to redraw voting map
3
The latest move comes on the heels of various other measures that have increased the sense of alienation people in Muslim-majority Kashmir feel from the rest of India, which is overwhelmingly Hindu. Relations between Kashmir and Delhi have been tense for decades but became worse after 2019 - when Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist government stripped Jammu and Kashmir state of its special status and divided it into two federally-administered territories. It also imposed restrictive measures, including a security crackdown and communication blockade that cut off the region from the world for several months. An insurgency in Kashmir against Indian rule has claimed thousands of lives over the last three decades. Kashmir is one of the world's most militarised zones, where alleged excesses committed by security forces against civilians have led to massive anger and resentment, regularly sparking huge protests.
Who are the critics?
Two former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir took to Twitter to criticise the commission's recommendations once they were made public. "My apprehensions about the Delimitation Commission weren't misplaced. They want to pitch people against each other by ignoring the population census," wrote Mehbooba Mufti, who was chief minister from 2016 to 2018. Ms Mufti's Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party (PDP) had refused to meet the federal commission, saying it believed the outcome of the exercise was "pre-planned". Omar Abdullah, chief minister from 2009 to 2015, also called the recommendation "unacceptable". "The distribution of newly created assembly constituencies with six going to Jammu and only one to Kashmir is not justified by the data of the 2011 census," he wrote on Twitter.
A controversy has erupted in Indianadministered Kashmir over a proposal to redraw the region's electoral map. Who's supporting the proposal?
HiIndia Newsdesk
T
he draft proposes an increase in assembly seats that could raise the influence of the Hindu-dominated Jammu region in the disputed region's electoral politics. Residents of the Muslim-dominated Kashmir valley fear this will reduce their say in choosing leaders. Mainstream political leaders say this could sound the death knell for pro-India politics in the region.
The local BJP unit has welcomed the commission's proposal. "The process is transparent and the commission has made recommendations only after studying the ground realities in both Jammu as well as Kashmir regions," Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Raina said. And some, like Harsh Dev Singh, leader of the Jammu-based Panthers Party which campaigned for years to remove Jammu and Kashmir's special status - feel Jammu deserves more than six additional seats.

The Biden administration on Wednesday took steps to ease the pressure that sanctions on the Taliban are having on Afghanistan as the combination of the pandemic, a severe drought, the loss of foreign aid and frozen currency reserves have left the country’s fragile economy on the brink of collapse. The humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan has put the Biden administration on
the defensive 3 months after the Taliban assumed power and US forces left the country. The US does not recognise the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan. Following the group’s takeover of the country this year, the Biden administration froze $9.5 billion of Afghanistan’s foreign reser ves, stopped sending shipments of dollars to Afghanistan’s central bank and pressured the IMF to delay plans to transmit emergency reserve funds to the country. The US treasury department said on Wednesday that it was issuing new “general licenses” that would make it easier for non-governmental organisations, international aid groups and the US government to provide relief to the Afghan people while maintaining economic pressure on the Taliban.

Chinese city of Xi’an UK's Covid self-isolation period cut from 10 to 7 days under lockdown HiIndia Newsdesk
HiIndia Newsdesk
Decision aimed at reducing disruption to frontline services and other businesses Britain surpassed 100,000 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday for the first time since the start of the pandemic, as the England’s government announced an easing of isolation restrictions. The new toll of 106,122 new infections — the highest
ever — comes as the highly transmissible omicron variant continues to surge across the country. The uptick is a 50 per cent increase over the past week, according to government data. A surge in coronavirus cases has winnowed the staffs of hospitals, clinics, rail services, fire departments and ambulance services across England, where most pandemic restrictions have been lifted since the summer. Before the new case numbers were released on Wednesday, England’s announced that it was reducing the number of days that people are required to isolate for after showing Covid-19 symptoms to seven days from 10 days — a change that officials said was based on updated guidance from health experts, and that could help alleviate the staffing shortages.
C h i n a o n Wednesday ordered the lockdown of a s m a ny a s 1 3 million people in neighbourhoods and workplaces in the northern c i t y o f X i ’a n following a spike i n c o r o n av i r u s cases, setting off panic buying just weeks before the country hosts the Winter Olympic Games. State media reported that city officials ordered all residents to stay home unless they had a pressing reason to go out and suspended all transport to and from the city apart from special cases. The order was to take effect at midnight and last indefinitely. One person from each household will be permitted out every two days to buy household necessities, the order said. Xi’an on Wednesday reported 52 new locally transmitted cases of the coronavirus over the previous 24 hours.

commemorating the incident, which is a highly sensitive topic in China. Its removal comes as Beijing has increasingly been cracking down on political dissent in Hong Kong. The university had initially ordered the removal of the statue - called the Pillar of Shame - in October. "The decision on the aged statue was based on external legal advice and risk assessment for the best interest of the university," it said in a statement on Thursday. "The university is also very concerned about the potential safety issues resulting from the fragile statue." The first sign the statue was being taken down came late on Wednesday night, when university officials fenced off the area with plastic sheeting.

A government minister in Madagascar has said he swam for 12 hours to safety after his helicopter crashed at sea during a rescue mission. "It's not my time to die," exhausted Police Minister Serge Gelle said as he recovered on a stretcher. Another security official travelling with him in the helicopter also survived the crash. The team had been flying to inspect the site of a shipwreck in the north-east of the country on Monday
night. The number of people killed in that accident has risen to 64 with at least 20 others still missing, the maritime agency has said The vessel was a cargo ship that was not authorised to carry passengers, and was overloaded and water flooded its engine, an agency official was quoted by Reuters news as saying. At least 45 survivors have so far been rescued, the agency said. On Twitter President Andry Rajoelina mourned those who died and also paid tribute to Mr Gelle and the other officer, who arrived in the seaside town of Mahambo separately. The helicopter's pilot and another military officer on board are still missing, he said. Daily Covid-19 cases in the UK exceed 100,000 for first time HiIndia Newsdesk
The UK has signed a free trade deal with Australia which it says will benefit consumers and businesses. It is described as the first post-Brexit deal negotiated from scratch and not "rolled over" from trade terms that the UK enjoyed while in the EU. The government estimated it would unlock £10.4bn of additional trade while ending tariffs on all UK exports. However, some UK farmers have expressed concern that they could be undercut by cheap imports. The government said the deal was also a gateway into the fast-growing IndoPacific region and would boost the UK's bid to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership, one of the largest free trade areas in the world.
Daily Covid-19 cases in the UK have exceeded 100,000 for the first time, the latest government figures show.
Some 106,122 cases were announced on Wednesday - the latest in a series of record-breaking days for infections. The eight highest daily case figures since the pandemic began have all come since 15 December. A total of 8,008 people were in hospital with coronavirus as of Tuesday, the highest since 22 November - but way down on last winter's peak. Boris Johnson has said no new restrictions will be introduced in England before Christmas. However, speaking on Tuesday, the prime minister refused to rule out introducing fresh measures after Christmas with the rapid spread of the Omicron variant. There were 140 deaths reported within 28 days of a positive Covid test on Wednesday. A record 968,665 boosters and third doses were reported on Tuesday, with 6.1 million in the past week alone. Wednesday's daily reported cases figure is the highest since mass testing began in May and June last year.

British Sikh MP Preet Kaur Gill under fire for deleted tweet on Golden Temple death HiIndia Newsdesk
London: Britain's first Sikh female member of Parliament and member of the shadow cabinet, Preet Kaur Gill, came under fire on social media over a tweet she later deleted that referred to a “Hindu terrorist” behind the act of violence at Golden Temple in Amritsar. The man, reportedly beaten to death on Saturday for "sacrilege", had allegedly barged into the inner sanctum where the Guru Granth Sahib is kept and grabbed a ceremonial sword placed next to the book before being overpowered by guards and worshippers. Responding to a video related to the incident posted on Twitter by UK immigration lawyer Harjap Bhangal, Labour MP Gill went on to agree with his message that it was a “clear act of terrorism”. The shadow international development secretary's now deleted Twitter post read: “Hindu terrorist prevented from an act of violence at the Sikh Holy shrine
The tweet refers to a ‘Hindu terrorist’ behind the act of violence at Golden Temple in Amritsar of Harminder Sahib (Golden Temple) against Sikhs.” It attracted outrage on social media, with some questioning if
the politician was “trying to make this communal”. The High Commission of India in London also condemned the
tweet and raised concerns over its impact on the Indian diaspora communities in the UK.“High Commission of India is constrained to unequivocally repudiate the public comment by a Member of the British Parliament regarding a crime that occurred in India even before the Indian law enforcement authority could investigate or comment or declare their finding,” an Indian High Commission spokesperson said. “The High Commission of India is concerned at the effect that such commentary by a foreign MP may have on inter-communal harmony and peace in the British Indian community,” the spokesperson said. The tweet, from Saturday, seems to have been deleted soon after by the MP for Birmingham Edgbaston to be replaced with a more general comment about places of worship. “No place of worship or community should be targeted in this way. Awful scenes from Harmandir Sahib,” reads her new tweet.

Statistics Canada's data shed light on some of the factors behind the monthly job vacancy data released previously, including sectoral and regional differences in unmet labour demand, changes in the occupation and skills profile of vacancies, and recent trends in the wages offered by employers.

Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his 10th visit to Uttar Pradesh in the past month, showcased his government’s contributions to women’s welfare – the latest of which, he said, was the raising of marriage age for girls from 18 to 21. From improvement of law and order to education and finance, women’s empowerment is a priority for the

The World Health Organization has urged people to cancel some of their holiday plans to protect public health, as the Omicron variant spreads globally. “An event cancelled is better than a life cancelled,” said WHO head Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, adding that “difficult decisions”
must be made. A number of countries have acted to try to halt the spread of the variant, including imposing travel curbs. In the US, Omicron is now dominant, accounting for 73% of new infections. President Joe Biden is expected to address the nation on Tuesday but the White House said he was not planning on “locking the country down”.

New Delhi: The number of cases of fast-spreading strain Omicron has risen to 213 in India, with Delhi and Maharashtra reporting the most number of infections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a meeting to review the situation tomorrow, sources told. Apart from Delhi (57 cases) and Maharashtra (54 cases), the fast-spreading Omicron strain has seen a rise in Telangana (24), Karnataka (19), Rajasthan (18), Kerala (15) and Gujarat (14). Three cases have been reported in Jammu and Kashmir and two each in Odisha and Uttar Pradesh. Andhra Pradesh, Chandigarh, Ladakh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal have reported one case each. Amid signs of rise in Omicron infections, the Centre, in an advisory, has asked the states to activate “war rooms” and bring back curbs, including night curfews to contain it. It also listed a series of prevention and containment measures that included extensive testing and regulation of gatherings. The letter from the health ministry called for “greater foresight, data analysis, dynamic decision making and strict and prompt containment action”, as it directed the states/union territories to be “prompt and focused and take containment measures and restrictions even before these thresholds are reached”.

n Tuesday, Rajya Sabha p a s s e d by v o i c e v o t e The Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021, enabling “the linking of electoral roll data with the Aadhaar ecosystem” as the Opposition walked out in protest. The Bill had been passed by Lok Sabha on Monday.
Wha t is the government ’s argument for bringing the Bill? T h e g ov e r n m e nt s ay s t h e B i l l incorporates various electoral reforms that have been discussed for a long time. The government says linking Aadhaar with electoral rolls will solve the problem of multiple enrolments of the same person at different places. “Once Aadhaar linkage is achieved, the electoral roll data system will instantly alert the existence of previous registration(s) whenever a person applies for new registration. This will help in cleaning the electoral roll to a great extent and facilitate elector registration in the location at which they are ‘ordinarily resident’, a government official said. A Parliamentary Standing Committee report on demands of grants of the Law Ministry, presented in Rajya Sabha on March 6 this year, had said: “The Committee has been advocating linkage of unique Aadhaar ID Card number with voter I-card which would streamline alterations in EPIC during change of ordinary residence by the electors. The incidence of multiple entry could also be eliminated which is required in participative democracy…” In Parliament, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said linking Aadhaar with the voter ID card “is voluntary. It is not compulsory or mandatory”. He said the government held “many meetings” with the Election Commission before the Bill was brought.
What were these discussions? In March 2015, the Election Commission had started a National Electoral Roll Purification and Authentication Programme that sought to link Aadhaar to voter IDs, in a bid to delete duplicated names. The EC said in a release in May 2015: “Under this programme, beside some other activities, linking and authentication of EPIC data of electors with Aadhaar data is also being done…” However, the EC had “issued necessary instructions to the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOS) of the States/UTs specifying that furnishing of Aadhaar number by electors is not mandatory and it is only optional, as directed by the Supreme Court…” That year, the Supreme Court made it clear that “the Aadhaar card Scheme is purely voluntary and it cannot be made mandatory till the matter is finally decided by this Court one way or the other”. In April this year, the EC wrote to the Law Ministry seeking “expeditious consideration” of pending electoral reforms including the linkage of Aadhar and voter ID cards. Earlier this week, the Law Ministry issued a statement that on November 16, the Election Commission attended an informal interaction sought by the PMO to finalise the Cabinet note on some long-pending reforms.
What are the Opposition’s objections? Manish Tewari of the Congress said: “The linking of voter IDs and Aadhaar

Linking voter rolls to Aadhaar
The newly passed Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021 enables this linkage, which the government says will help check multiple registrations of the same voter. What are Opposition parties objecting to this? News Courtsy : The India Express
violates the fundamental right to privacy as defined by the Supreme Court in the judgment.” AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi said if the Bill becomes an Act, the government would be able to use voter identity details for “disenfranchising some people and profile the citizens”. “This Bill is outside the legislative competence of this House… The linking of voter ID with Aadhaar violates the fundamental right to privacy defined in Puttaswamy (case),” Owaisi said. R ijiju s aid, “ The pres ent lega l provisions have some disparity and some shortcomings, and to remove the same, the government, in consultation with the Election Commission and incorporating recommendations made by the Election Commission, we have brought these amendments.” He
detailed the proposed amendments to various sections of The Representation of the People Act, 1951. Rijiju quoted from the 105th report of the Department-Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personal, Public Grievances and Law and Justice, which expressed the view that linking Aadhaar with electoral rolls will purify electoral rolls and will consequently reduce electoral malpractices.
Why should there be a problem with identifying names that appear in multiple rolls? One of the concerns is whether the Bill’s implementation will be successful if the linkage is not compulsory. The Bill amends the Representation of the People Act, 1950 and the Representation
Are there other concerns? The Opposition has claimed Aadhaar linkage will enable non-citizens to vote. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said in Lok Sabha, “If you are in a position asking for Aadhaar for voters, all you are getting is a document that reflects residence, not citizenship. You’re potentially giving the vote to non-citizens.” Sengupta said, “This has also been mentioned in the House, that Nepalis and Bangladeshis will not be allowed to vote and this will ensure that doesn’t happen. Now here there is a conceptual confusion… Aadhaar is not proof of citizenship and it is said so very clearly in the Aadhaar Act. We know that voting can only be done by citizens. I’m unable to understand how this will prevent non-citizens from voting because noncitizens can have an Aadhar card… The goal of preventing non-citizens from voting will not be solved with Aadhaar.” Another concern, raised by the CPI(M) in a statement, is the view that the Bill could violate secrecy of the vote undermining the principle of secret ballots, and the fundamental right to privacy of the voter.
15
Can individual votes be tracked that way? “While individual identification of voting choices may not be possible with the linkage of Aadhaar with voter IDs, it will lead to profiling,” said Apar Gupta, Executive Director of the Internet Freedom Foundation. “Verification of a person’s identity is separate from the capturing of the identity which is already happening in booths when a person goes to vote. But it may help the government link it to other services where larger schemes may be designed based on the data…” He added: “The other concern is that there is a documented case that Aadhaar data was being leaked. It could lay the foundation of targeted political propaganda which is against the model code of conduct as well.” In April 2019, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) complained to police about a Hyderabad-based software company, IT Grids (India) Private Limited, accusing it of illegally procuring details of 7,82,21,397 Aadhaar holders in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and storing these in its databases. Concerns were raised on account of the alleged security vulnerabilities of UIDAI servers, which the authority denied at the time. The case was transferred to a special investigation team, but the investigation has not made any significant progress. of the People Act, 1951 to implement certain electoral reforms. The 1950 Act provides that a person may apply to the electoral registration officer for inclusion of their name. The Bill says the electoral registration officer may require a person to furnish their Aadhaar number for establishing their identity. If their name is already in the electoral roll, then the Aadhaar number may be required for authentication of entries in the roll, but people will not be denied inclusion in the electoral roll or have their names deleted, if they are unable to show their Aadhaar cards. Arghya Sengupta, founder and research director at Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, said: “The first justification provided is that bogus voting where one person is voting more than once is taking place… If you’re saying you have to provide it along with your voter ID whenever you go to vote… this will only work if providing Aadhaar is mandatory. However, this section in the law is a bit complicated because it does seem voluntary but the reasons on the basis of which I can choose not to link my Aadhaar will be prescribed by the government for ‘sufficient cause’. Now what that sufficient cause could be is not mentioned in the Bill?…This should be made clear.”

Global events to watch out for in 2021
US presidential inauguration The 117th United States Congress, scheduled to convene on January 3, will certify the Electoral College results of the 2020 presidential election. On January 20, the US presidential inauguration will be held where Joe Biden will start his term as President of the United States, along with Kamala Harris as Vice President.
George Floyd murder trial
PM Modi opens Kashi Vishwanath corridor

Approximately a year after Floyd was killed by four police officers in Minneapolis, sparking nationwide protests against racism, discrimination and police brutality in the US, a murder trial is scheduled to begin in March. The Black Lives Matter movement spilled outside the US and resulted in protests in other parts of the world. The trial will be landmark, because activists have pointed to how the US justice system fails and penalises people of colour, women and immigrants.
End of Castro rule in Cuba In November this year, the Associated Press had reported that Raul Castro is expected to step down as head of the Communist Party of Cuba at its eighth Congress on 19 April. This would mark the end of over six decades of political leadership by the Castro brothers in Cuba.
International sports events Just like the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, the UEFA Euro 2020 was also postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. June and July are scheduled to witness some of these major international sports events, if organisers are able to proceed as planned. Critics have said that the summer of 2021 will remain unfeasible even with the start of a slow roll-out of Covid-19 vaccines, because such largescale events may still pose a risk to public health and safety.
Addressing a gathering of 3,000 guests, the PM urged Indians to make three resolutions for the sake of the country: Swachhta (cleanliness), Srijan (creation), and continuous efforts for Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).

Zee-Sony merger will create an Indian entertainment giant
Japanese conglomerate Sony's Indian arm has finalised a deal with local rival Zee Entertainment to form the country's second largest entertainment network. The merged entity will include more than 75 television channels, film assets and two streaming platforms. It is poised to become a major player in the country's fastgrowing entertainment industry, challenging rivals such as Walt Disney's Hotstar.
Israel is scheduled to hold its fourth elections in two years after the country’s two main parties in its unity government failed to meet a deadline in a dispute over government budgets. Twelve months after they were last held, elections will occur in March. These elections will come at a time when President Benjamin Netanyahu, who is on trial for corruption, has been aiming for a sixth term in the country’s highest office, while simultaneously facing mass protests this year from citizens calling for his resignation. The coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated the leader’s problems, with protesters also accusing him of mishandling the outbreak.
Hong Kong The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is scheduled to hold an election for the Legislative Council. Originally scheduled on September 6, 2020, it was postponed by Chief Executive Carrie Lam due to the coronavirus pandemic. The move was seen as an attempt by Beijing and Lam to curb the pro-democracy movement.

Indian Research and Insights industry to grow 2X by 2026 to $4.2 billion: MRSI
India is fast becoming the global analytics hub, with international markets accounting for 3/4th of its revenues. As per the report, the Indian R&I sector employs more than 125,000 people.
Why BookMyShow is hopeful for a healthy revival in 2022
The last 19 months have been difficult for the movie and events industry. However, with cinema halls opening up across the country and live events also slowly starting, things are finally looking up.
The Market Research Society of India today launched its inaugural edition of the Indian Research & Insights (R&I) Industry Report. As per the report, the Indian R&I industry is expected to grow at a 12-14% CAGR to $4.2 billion (INR 31,300 crore) by 2025-26, compared to $2.1 bn (INR 17,200 crore) in 2020-21. Moreover, India is fast becoming the global analytics hub, with international markets accounting for 3/4th of its revenues. As per the report, the Indian R&I sector employs more than 125,000 people. During 2020-21, Marketing Analytics services accounted for 52% of the total Indian R&I industry revenues, while traditional Market Research and Syndicated/ Publishing services stood at 32% and 16%, respectively. By 2025 26, Analytics services will account for 59%, while Custom Market Research and Syndicated/ Publishing services will account for 27% and 14%, respectively, as per the report. The FMCG and Retail sectors are the largest consumer for Research and Insights with a share of 27%, followed by Information, Communications & Telecom (16%) and Banking, Financial Services & Insurance (15%).
W
ith cinemas across all states in India finally opening, there is a lot of optimism about this quarter kick-starting the recovery cycle for cinemas, audiences and the industry as a whole. BookMyShow witnessed a hockey stick growth in user engagement, traffic and transactions nearing pre-covid levels on the platform within just the first ten days of cinemas opening up. “Within the first 10 days of the movies releasing pan-India, daily consumer traffic surged to 76% of pre-Covid levels on an average while user engagement has been steadily rising the charts, already surpassing 66% of pre-covid levels on BookMyShow,” shared Saksena. Consumers from Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Ahmedabad have been quickest to return back to the movies contributing, 48% of the traffic recovery. To encourage people to come back to the big screen, BMS has been running a six-month-long campaign #CinemaIsBack that it has conceptualised and executed in-house team. BMS is also going to onboard brand advocates to highlight the safety measures being undertaken at the cinemas. It is also working with partners across industries including Amazon, ixigo and MyGlamm to curate special offers and discounts for its transactors through the festive season. “Over the next few months, we look forward to welcoming film enthusiasts and cinephiles #BackToTheatres for a safe entertainment experience through the festive season and beyond. Buoyed by the initial response to cinemas over the last month and given the staggering number of film titles set for release in December through Christmas and New Year, we believe we can expect strong growth from cinemas in the short-term itself. As far as live events go, globally countries like USA and UK have gone back to pre-covid levels and we are expecting a similar compelling return for live entertainment through 2022-23. The pace at which the country’s vaccination drive is progressing reposes confidence that the stage has been set for a long-impending revival of the entertainment business in India with all the standard safety protocols in place,” With cinemas opening in India and production houses announcing a line ups of big budget movies across languages and genres since the festive season this year, BMS anticipates the road to recovery to be smooth in 2022.

It was deeply offensive to show immensely venerated Lord Ganesh as a “gangsta” (member of an inner-city street gang); Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, indicated. Rajan Zed emphasized that Lord Ganesh was meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines and not to be mocked at and paraded in a reimagined version as “gangsta” for mercantile objectives. Inappropriate usage of sacred Hindu deities or concepts or symbols or icons for commercial or other agenda was not okay as it hurt the devotees.

"Limitless' money in Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, who is currently the vice-president and prime minister of UAE, got married to Princess Haya in 2004. The judgment states that she divorced her in 2019 under the Sharia law without her knowledge. The Princess' lawyers told the court that when in Dubai, she and the children had access to 'limitless' money. Princess Haya had access to over a dozen luxurious mansions, a 400 million pounds yacht, and a fleet of private planes, her lawyers told the court. According to the ruling, she used to get 83 million pounds annually for her household, along with 9 million pounds spending money.
Blackmail using children's money The 72-year-old ruler of the emirate of Dubai has long been locked in a bitter legal battle with his 47-year-old former wife, who lives in London with their two children, aged 13 and nine. During one of the hearings, Princess Haya was questioned about a 6.7 million pounds payment she made to cover up her affair with one of the bodyguards. To make the payment, she used money from the children's bank accounts. "I was very frightened," Haya said when asked why she had used money from the children's accounts to pay them off. "I was scared and that was the money that was available in that amount."
Mansions in London Of the total divorce settlement, 251.5 million pounds would go towards the upkeep of Princess Haya's houses in London. In 2016, Princess Haya bought a mansion near Kensington Palace for 87.5 million pounds and then spent 14.7 million pounds in getting it refurbished, the court was told. The Dubai ruler has been ordered to make payments that would cover a 10-year refurbishment project of the house and also cover the salaries of five housekeepers. "We always kept it to a very high standard and that is the amount of people needed to keep it as it is now," Princess Haya said. She has also sought a yearly payment of 770,000 pounds for the maintenance of her Castlewood mansion in Berkshire.
400 racehorses Princess Haya said that she and their children owned over 60 racehorses, for whom she sought 75 million pounds in compensation. While being married to the Sheikh, she bought nearly 400 racehorses. "If I wanted a horse, I bought one," Princess Haya told the court.

Dubai Royals' Record Divorce Settlement The legal battle between Dubai's ruler and his ex-wife has brought to forefront the lavish lifestyle of the the ultra-rich Middle Eastern royalty. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, was today ordered by the High Court in London to pay his former wife, Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, around 550 million pounds ($730 million) - reportedly the highest divorce settlement set by an English court. The settlement amount will go towards the upkeep of Princess Haya's British mansions and to cover the future security costs of her and their children. hotel in Greece was 274,000 euros, the court said in its ruling. Princess Haya would get money for two weeks of vacation in Britain and to travel abroad nine weeks every year. Judge Philip Moor said that the annual award for holidays would be 5.1 million pounds a year, with 1 million pounds each for hiring private plane and food expenditure. The court awarded Princess Haya a further 1 million pounds to spend on leisure. He also granted 277,050 pounds a year for spending on pets, including 25,000 pounds to buy horses and 12,000 pounds for toys, grooming, and training of unspecified animals.
Clothes and jewellery Princess Haya in her testimony said that her ex-husband used to regularly spoil her with lavish gifts during their marriage, and was awarded 13.7 million pounds as compensation for what she claimed were missing jewellery and clothes. She had initially sought 52 million pounds for the missing items. She said her collection of haute couture was worth about 74 million euros, and only the most basic items had been returned to her after she fled to Britain. "If you put all the pieces in that room spread across this courtroom, it would be full," Haya said. "I was spoiled with wonderful gifts which I enjoyed very, very much at the time." In a 23-minute video presented during the hearing, the judge could be seen walking into a safe in the Dubai palace where the jewellery was kept. The judge said that what was left in the safe seemed "standard fare".

Cricket South Africa on Monday stated that there will be no tickets made available for India’s tour of the Rainbow Nation due to the rising Covid-19 cases in the world as well as in South Africa. The statement read, “CSA wishes to inform the most ardent fans of cricket as well as all sports lovers that owing to the increasing COVID cases around the world, and the fourth wave locally, the two cricketing bodies have taken a joint decision to protect the players and the tour by not making tickets available for the India vs Proteas offerings. Consequently, we urge all sport lovers to exercise absolute care, during these extraordinary times.”

Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai has told a Singapore newspaper that she never said she wrote of having been sexually assaulted, despite a November social media post attributed to her that accused a former top Communist Party official of having forced her into sex. The Lianhe Zaobao Chinese-language newspaper posted video of Peng it says was taken Sunday in Shanghai in which she said she has been mainly staying at home in Beijing but was free to come and go as she chose. “First of all, I want to emphasize something that is very important. I have never said that I wrote that anyone sexually assaulted me. I need to emphasize this point very clearly,” Peng told the newspaper’s reporter.
R Ashwin admits he considered retirement: ‘A lot of people were backed, why not me?’ HiIndia Newsdesk
The first phase, Ravichandran Ashwin said, was right after the England series in 2018, followed by abdomen tear in Australia later that year after the Adelaide Test.
Indian chess maestro Viswanathan Anand lost both his matches in the Rapid event to end his campaign with just one victory at the 7th Vugar Gashimov Memorial chess tournament here on Tuesday. The former world champion Indian lost to Fabiano Caruana of USA 0.5-1.5 in his first match of the day before going down to lower-rated Azerbaijan player Vugar Asadli by the same margin. Anand’s only win in the Rapid section came against Shakriyar Mamedyarov in the sixth round on Monday. He finished with a tally of 5.5 points from seven rounds.
Prolonged injuries, lack of support and backing during the period between 2018-2020 forced India’s star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to contemplate retirement. In an interview with ESPNCricinfo, Ashwin revealed that it was one of the most difficult times for him as a cricketer. The first phase, he said, was right after the England series in 2018, followed by abdomen tear in Australia later that year after the Adelaide Test. “Between 2018 and 2020, I contemplated giving up the sport at various points. I thought, ‘I have put in a lot of effort, but it is not coming through.’ The harder I tried, the farther it felt. Especially with athletic pubalgia and the patellar tendonitis – I used to bowl six balls and then I used to be gasping for breath. And there would be pain all over the place. So you needed to make adjustments. When the knee pain got excruciating, the next ball I would probably jump less. When I jumped less, obviously the force needs to be produced through the core and the back and the shoulders, so the pubalgia would act up. So the third ball I would be extra side-on to try to use the hips. By the time I was done with six balls, I would be like, ‘I need a break here.'”

It is hard to browse through social media without coming across a banquet's worth of mouth-watering posts, but do these actually alter your own food choices?
Some research shows that if we're scrolling through lots of photos, we start to tune them out – we start to feel something that feels like satiety – Solveig Argeseanu
any of us are lucky enough to have some degree of choice over what we eat. When we open the fridge or browse the shelves of the local supermarket, there are a smorgasbord of options available to us. But are the decisions we make about our diet as free as we like to think? What if there was something other than our own hunger and the choices that happen to be at eyelevel influencing what we eat? Scroll through social media sites such as Instagram, Twitter or Facebook and you will be confronted with picture after picture of perfectly presented and utterly delicious-looking meals. While the smell and taste of food can have an undeniably powerful effect on our cravings, are endless posts of steaming snacks and glistening morsels more than just a feast for our eyes? Certainly, it appears we're hugely influenced by other people – especially those closest to us – when it comes to what we eat. Research has found that the closer and stronger two people's connection, the more sway they have over each other's food choices. "A lot of our cues from face-to-face interactions are linked with who we're with," says Solveig Argeseanu, associate professor of global health and epidemiology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, US. "It's more about the relationship and how I compare myself with that person than specific individuals. If I think the person I'm with is more attractive or popular, I'll tend to want to imitate them more." This can mean these social cues generally encourage us to eat more, Argeseanu adds. Although, being around healthy eaters may encourage you to eat healthier, too, according to research. Our eating habits are also influenced by what we see. Scientists say we favour "oozing" protein, a dribbling egg yolk, or
seem so credible," she says. Scientists are becoming increasingly concerned that food-related content on social media is making us think differently about food. Social media algorithms promote content that users engage with more, so viewing more unhealthy food means seeing more of it on our social media feeds, Pancer says. "With higher engagement and reach metrics for unhealthy foods, content producers may gradually shift their content to be unhealthier to stay competitive," he says. "And with more exposure to unhealthy foods, consumer perceptions of what is considered normal eating habits may skew to be unhealthier." One study estimated that children and adolescents see marketing for food between 30 and 189 times per week on social media apps, with fast food and sugary drinks being the most common. But it's not just advertising placements from the food industry that are responsible – we're all capable of influencing people online. It starts to get risky, C avazo says, if the content people s e e p e r p e tu ate s an unhealthy body image, for example. "Some of us are less influenced by content, but for others who are already at risk and may have symptoms of eating disorders, having more content that normalises unhealthy eating patterns could trigger s omeone to move towards unhealthy behaviours." But while studies have found that social media c an ma ke us t h i n k differently about food,

follow through on that desire is influenced by lot of other factors, such as what food is available at the time. But social media is one place where visual and social cues meet. There is certainly evidence that if friends in your social network post regularly about particular types of food, it could lead you to copy them, for better or for worse. And research indicates that social media might be changing our relationship with food, making us think differently about what we eat. "If all your friends on social media are posting pictures of themselves consuming fast food, it's going to set a norm that eating fast food is what people do," says Higgs. Research suggests we're more likely to engage with photos of fast food, says Ethan Pancer, professor of marketing at Saint Mary's University in Halifax, Nova

“The first female, first Asian, youngest ever CHRO of Unilever,” reads Londonbased Leena Nair's LinkedIn profile. The former Chief Human Resources Officer & Member of the Unilever Leadership Executive at British consumer goods company, Unilever, Nair, 52, has just made headlines by becoming the Global Chief Executive Officer of French luxury Maison, Chanel. With 30 years experience at Unilever where she started as a management
trainee in 1992, her appointment is said to be an effort to bring an outsider's perspective to the fashion industry. Counted among Fortune India's Most Powerful Women 2021, the XLRI Jamshedpur alumni is lauded for her people-focused approach to leadership culture in large companies. Alain Wertheimer, who co-owns the brand with his brother Gerard, will move to the role of global executive chairman. He has served as CEO since the departure of American fashion executive Maureen Chiquet in 2016. 'Heroes are scared to romance me'
Sara Ali Khan
'I am very bold that's why they get intimidated by my presence.'
T
he famously bold and fiercely opinionated actress Mallika Sherawat is thrilled to have bagged a starring role in the coming multilingual film Nagmati, which went before cameras on Monday with a mahurat puja.
This is your first film where you are playing a double role. Tell us more. I watched Seeta Aur Geeta in my childhood where Hema Maliniji played a double role. I have grown up watching Amitabh Bachchanji in several films where he played a double role. So I was half nervous, half excited when the makers of Nagmati approached me for the film. Playing a dual role is always exciting for any actor because he or she gets to play two characters in one single film. I am doing it for the first time. Whether I fail at it or excel at it is something I will get to know only when I begin shooting. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
Were you offered a double role before in your career, but you could not take it up for some reason? Not only a double role, but I also had to let go of so many interesting roles in the past.
What's Manoj doing with Kane Williamson?
In a new video released by Amazon Prime Video, we see The Family Man star Manoj Bajpayee engaging in a fun chat with New Zealand’s cricket team captain Kane Williamson. The two are seen chatting about cricket and shows as Manoj tries his best to get Kane to confess all the strategies he has been planning as his team gears up to face the Indian cricket team next year. The versatile actor also taught the New Zealand skipper to say his popular dialogue from The Family Man Season 2 — “Don’t be a minimum guy”. Kane even revealed who could moonlight from his team as a good spy (Glenn Phillips) and someone who would ace the corporate job (Mitchell Santner).

Reason?
Admits it’s competitive but is too comfortable in her skin to feel insecure
Compromise. And I don't compromise on anything. I did not enter the industry to compromise, you know. Those who compromise eventually get t h o s e plu m roles.
A
ctor Sara Ali Khan said that because she is so comfortable in her own skin, she doesn’t feel insecure about forging friendships with her contemporaries, Ananya Panday, Janhvi Kapoor and Radhika Madan, each of whom she has bonded with individually. In a new interview, she said that competition exists, but the young actresses have bonded over their unique experience of starting out around the same time, and seeing their new careers be affected by the pandemic. In an interview, she said in Hindi, “We have a lot in common, We are young actors, and we’ve lost important years to COVID-19. This is something that only we can express to each other; there’s an understanding we have with each other that we don’t have with others. Of course there is competition, but if you know who you are, and if you stay true to yourself, there’s no harm.” Sara also said that her relationship with her father, Saif Ali Khan, has ‘stood the test of time’ and that he has always been there for her. “He’s my father, and I love him,” she said, adding, “That’s something that hasn’t changed with time.” She also revealed that she never got the chance to visit her father on set when he was working with Akshay Kumar, who is now her co-star in Atrangi Re.
It is not just a double role, but also a title role. Do you feel any pressure mounting on you? I feel when an actress gets to play a title role and that too in a female-centric film, it is good for the whole industry. This inspires writers to write more such characters and films. Earlier, only male actors used to get such 'privileged' roles. But now, slowly and slowly, the tide is turning and female actors are also getting to do these kinds of roles.
The Actor Who Gave 1,000 Auditions!
'When you are not from this industry, you have to take everything really, really seriously.'
Ayush Mehra is enjoying the love he's getting for his debut OTT show, Call My Agent: Bollywood. Directed by Shaad Ali, the series sees him take centrestage with Rajat Kapoor, Soni Razdan and Aahana Kumra. Of course, it didn't come easy, but Ayush has quite a practical approach. "You feel bad when you get rejected in the first 10 auditions. But after 20 and 250 auditions, it doesn't matter. It's a process, like hits and flops, and not to be taken seriously. You do your best and then forget about it," he tells.
What kind of feedback are you getting for Call May Agent? I'm getting good responses. A lot of people, who have watched the show, have said that I stand out. Since it's my OTT debut, it's really motivating.
A growing actor wants to hear appreciation in his first show at least.
Being a Punjabi, how difficult was it to portray a Parsi character? There are challenges when you have to play a person who speaks a different dialect but the script helped me a lot. Since they are modern agents, a lot of slang that Parsis use will not come in place. It will only happen when you are in a private space, or in distress. The idea was not to overdo it, but to keep it natural, to have a sprinkle of it. I have done it the way it was written.

How Govinda went from auditioning for a small part in Mahabharat to Bollywood’s king of comedy
I
t was late 1980s when Govinda was still trying to find his footing in Bollywood. Just two films down, Govinda thought of giving television a shot too. In fact he auditioned for the role of Abhimanyu in TV’s cult show Mahabharat (1988). But luckily, TanBadan happened, his first lead role opposite Khushbu and directed by his uncle Anand. He never looked back at TV and went on to act in nearly 50 films for the next six years. That
The kind of comedy he brought to the table was beyond timing. Take for instance his Dulhe Raja. A dhaba-owner struggling to keep his food joint running when a filthy rich and powerful hotelier threatens to demolish it on a daily basis. Sounds like a sob story of struggle? On paper maybe, but the film made it a Govinda's films were massy laugh riot. And can we ignore family entertainers that his pelvic moves? Govinda’s dance continues to remain unmatchable, catered to and his songs are integral to our everyone from 6 to 60. house parties too, when we wish to dance like no one’s watching. By was when Shola Aur Shabnam became a hit, this we do not mean his dance was opening more doors for him. all about fun and laughter. It was Govinda might have said time and again that serious dancing. Who all remember the characters he played were nowhere similar “Husn Hai Suhana” or for that matter to his real self, but when he stood under the “Meri Pant Bhi Sexy.” arch lights, there was no one like Govinda.
'I don't think I've achieved much'
It has been 80 years of listening to Lata Mangeshkar's beautiful voice! Yes, India's Nightingale completed eight decades of singing in the movies on December 16. Only 14 years old then, she had sung two songs for radio for the first time. Lataji looks back at her career, and tells Subhash K Jha, "He (my father) predicted I'd doing something very special with my life."
You have complete 80 years of singing.
It's all God's grace. And, of course, the blessings of my parents, who dreamt big dreams for me. Do you know that my father was an astrologer? He predicted I'd doing something very special with my life.
You are going far ahead of what your father had predicted...
Yeh sach hai maine logon ka bahot pyar paya hai (I've received so much love of the people) but that doesn't mean I am complacent about my career. There is always room for more. I don't think I've achieved as much as people think I have.
