Facebook uncovers Chinese network behind fake expert HiIndia Newsdesk

The accounts had promoted the claims of a fake Swiss biologist called "Wilson Edwards", who alleged the US was meddling in efforts to find the origins of Covid-19. Edwards' comments had been widely carried by Chinese state media outlets. However, the Swiss embassy said that it was unlikely this person existed. Meta said in its report the social media campaign was "largely unsuccessful," and targeted Englishspeaking audiences in the United States and Britain and Chinesespeaking audiences in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Tibet. Earlier in July, an account posing as a Swiss biologist called Wilson Edwards had made statements on Facebook and Twitter that the United States was applying pressure on the World Health Organization scientists who were studying the origins of Covid-19 in an attempt to blame the virus on China. State media outlets, including CGTN, Shanghai Daily and Global Times, had cited the so-called biologist

Facebook owner Meta Platforms has removed more than 500 accounts linked to an online disinformation network primarily based in China. based on his Facebook profile. However, the Swiss embassy said in August that the person likely did not exist, as the Facebook account was opened only two weeks prior to its first post and only had three friends. It added "there was no registry of a Swiss citizen with the name "Wilson Edwards" and no academic articles under the name", and urged Chinese media outlets to take down any mention of him. Meta Platforms said in a November

report that its investigation into the matter found "links to individuals in mainland China, including employees of Sichuan Silence Information Technology Co Ltd... and individuals associated with Chinese state infrastructure companies based around the world." Sichuan Silence Information's website describes the company as a network and information security company that provides technical support to China's Ministry of Public Security

and CNCERT, the key team that coordinates China's cybersecurity emergency response. Facebook said it had removed a total of 524 Facebook accounts, 20 pages, four groups and 86 Instagram accounts after reviewing public reports that centred around the fake Swiss biologist. The persona's original post was initially shared and liked by fake Facebook accounts, and later forwarded by authentic users, most of which belonged to employees of Chinese state infrastructure companies in over 20 countries, Meta said. It added that the operation used Virtual Personal Network (VPN) infrastructure to conceal its origin, and to give Edwards a more rounded personality. It also said that his profile photo also appeared to have been generated using machine-learning capabilities. The investigation into the origins of Covid-19 have been a source of tension between the US, China and other countries, as the source of the virus remains murky almost two years after it was first discovered.

Top US judges signal Omicron: Stringent rules support for abortion limits for all travellers to US HiIndia Newsdesk

The US Supreme Court appears poised to accept a Mississippi law that would bar abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, even in cases of rape or incest. In Wednesday's hearing into the case, conservative justices hinted that a majority backed upholding the law. A ruling, expected in June, may see millions of women lose abortion access. Anti-abortion activists are urging the court to "protect unborn children", but experts warn of an increase in maternal mortality if abortion is restricted.

Both sides of the debate regard this case, known as Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization, as an all-ornothing fight over abortion rights. Lawyers defending the Mississippi law have asked the court to overturn two previous landmark decisions regarding abortion.

Biden says economy 'in strong shape' ahead of holidays

A World Health Organisation official said 24 countries may have reported cases of the variant so far but that some of the early indications were that most cases were mild, with none severe. Travel bans had consequences, he said, but there would be more mutations without other measures to contain its spread. Staving off omicron while scientists establish how easily it can spread and whether it can evade vaccine protection is a “race against time” the president of the EU’s executive commission said, emphasising the role of vaccines. “Prepare for the worst, hope for the best,” Ursula von der Leyen told a news conference, adding that according to scientists, full vaccination and a booster shot provide the strongest possible protection.

Prosecutors on Wednesday charged Oxford High School student Ethan Crumbley, 15, as an adult. He has pleaded not guilty. Police are yet to identify a motive in the attack. The victims were named as Tate Myre, 16, Madisyn Baldwin, 17, Hana St Juliana, 14, and Justin Shilling, 17. Announcing the charges on Wednesday, Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald said her office had "a mountain of digital evidence" to show the suspect had planned the attack "well before the incident".

First Omicron Case In US Fuels Global Alarm Over Coronavirus Variant HiIndia Newsdesk

The first known U.S. case was a fully vaccinated person in California who returned to the United States from South Africa on Nov. 22 and tested positive seven days later. President Joe Biden is working on the U.S. strategy for fighting COVID-19 this winter and sources briefed on the matter told Reuters one step will be extending requirements for travelers to wear masks through mid-March. A formal announcement is expected on Thursday, the sources said. Airlines in the United States were told to hand over the names of passengers arriving from parts of southern Africa hit by Omicron, according to a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention letter seen by Reuters.

New Omicron Cases In South Africa Double In A Day; Strain In 24 Countries HiIndia Newsdesk

The United States told airlines to hand over the names of passengers from parts of southern Africa hit by Omicron, which the World Health Organization (WHO) said had now reached at least 24 countries, with cases ranging from mild to severe.

UN boss warns of 'travel apartheid' over restrictions HiIndia Newsdesk

The African Union and United Nations have jointly criticised travel restrictions put on several Southern African countries following the discovery of the Omicron variant of Covid-19. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned that the restrictions could lead to "travel apartheid", describing them as "deeply unfair, punitive and ineffective" in stopping the spread of the variant. He said Africans should not be collectively punished for sharing health information with the world. The AU chairperson Chairperson Mahamat Faki said wealthier nations should help the continent increase its vaccination rates which currently stand at under 6% while some developed countries were already giving third booster shots. It comes just a day after South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and his Nigerian counterpart asked countries to reverse the travel bans. The World Health Organization says at least 23 countries globally have now reported cases of Omicron.

Johannesburg: The heavily mutated Omicron variant of the coronavirus is rapidly becoming dominant in South Africa, less than four weeks after being identified there, authorities said on Wednesday, as other countries tightened their borders against the new threat. The United States told airlines to hand over the names of passengers from parts of southern Africa hit by Omicron, which the World Health Organization (WHO) said had now reached at least 24 countries, with cases ranging from mild to severe. Early indications suggesting that Omicron may be markedly more contagious than previous variants had already rattled financial markets, fearful that new restrictions around the world could choke off a tentative recovery from the economic ravages of the pandemic. South Africa's National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said Omicron's profile and early epidemiological data suggested it was able to evade some immunity, but that existing vaccines should still protect against severe disease and death. It said 74% of all the samples it had genetically sequenced last

month had been of the new variant, which was announced a week ago but was first found in a sample taken on Nov 8 in Gauteng, South Africa's most populous province. The number of new cases reported in South Africa doubled from Tuesday to Wednesday. WHO epidemiologist Maria van Kerkhove told a briefing that data on how contagious Omicron was should be available "within days". BioNTech's CEO said the vaccine it makes in a partnership with Pfizer was likely to offer strong protection against severe disease from Omicron. The president of the European Union's executive Commission said there was a "race against time" to stave off the new variant while scientists establish how easily it can spread and whether it can evade vaccine protection. The EU brought forward the start of its vaccine rollout for five-to-11-year-olds by a week to Dec 13. WHO emergencies director Mike Ryan was critical of developed countries pushing booster shots for large parts of their fully vaccinated populations when even vulnerable people in many poorer regions had had no vaccination at all

Russia says some US embassy UK gasps for electricity after staff must leave in January storm HiIndia Newsdesk

Russia said on Wednesday it was ordering U.S. embassy staff who have been in Moscow for more than three years to fly home by Jan. 31, a retaliatory move for what Moscow said was a U.S. decision to limit the terms of Russian diplomats. The step, the latest in an escalating diplomatic row, comes after Russia’s ambassador to the United States said last week that 27 Russian diplomats and their families were being expelled from the United States and would leave on Jan. 30. “We … intend to respond in the corresponding way. U.S. embassy employees who have been in Moscow for more than three years must leave Russia by Jan. 31,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told a briefing.

Some 30,000 people in the north of England and in Scotland have been without electricity for the better part of a week after a storm brought snow, ice and the most severe disruption to infrastructure in years, British officials said on Wednesday. Storm Arwen delivered wind gusts of almost 100 miles per hour to northern and western parts of the UK on Friday and over the weekend. The weather disrupted transportation and caused residential power outages, especially in rural and hard-to-reach areas. Officials have said three people died in storm-related incidents.

Japan continued its aggressive stance against a new coronavirus variant on Wednesday, asking international airlines to stop taking new reservations for all flights arriving in the country until the end of December in a further tightening of already strict bordercontrols. The transportation ministry said the request is an emergency precaution amid growing worry over the spread of the new omicron variant. The move by the world’s third largest economy, coupled with its recent return to a ban on foreign visitors, is among the most stringent anywhere, and more in line with cloistered neighbour China than with some other democracies in the region. It comes as scientists work frantically to determine just how threatening omicron is.

"Not Divine Right Of Individual..." Prashant Kishor's Jibe At Rahul Gandhi HiIndia Newsdesk

The Kashmiri skier taking India to Beijing HiIndia Newsdesk

Arif Khan made it look easy as he slalomed downhill on the artificial slopes of Ski Dubai recently. That was the moment he became the first, and so far only, Indian athlete to qualify for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, which begins in February. For the 31-year-old, who hails from Gulmarg in Indian-administered Kashmir, it has been a long hard climb to get there. "It's exciting to be the first Indian to have qualified for the Beijing Games," Khan told the BBC. "It's a big boost for winter sports in the country and for the youth in Kashmir. I remember the last time how difficult it was chasing the 2018 qualification when there was hardly any support for training and racing events." Even though a cricket-crazy India has steadily moved on from being a one-sport nation, raking in their richest haul of seven medals at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, winter sports continue to languish on the fringes. India has never won a medal at the Winter Olympics, and has never sent more than four athletes to a single edition of the Games. The Indian government dropped winter sports from the priority list in 1998 and it has not been reinstated yet. Ski and Snowboard India was only recognised by the International Ski Federation (FIS) in 2020. But Khan is no stranger to the hard life in the mountains. His father Yaseen Khan, who was a skier and has been a ski guide since 1980, introduced a young Arif to skiing. The boy quickly took to the sport and started doing well in junior national competitions by the age of 12. Skiing is still a developing sport in the region, even though it's located in the lap of the Himalayas and has access to glorious natural slopes.

Prashant Kishor's strike comes on top of Mamata Banerjee's swipes at the Congress in Mumbai last evening.

New Delhi: The Congress has lost more than 90 per cent elections in the last 10 years and its leadership is "not the divine right" of an individual, poll strategist Prashant Kishor said today in his sharpest attack yet on Rahul Gandhi, with whom he was in talks just months ago. The strike comes on top of Mamata Banerjee's swipes at the Congress leader in Mumbai last evening. "The IDEA and SPACE that #Congress represents is vital for a strong opposition. But Congress' leadership is not the DIVINE RIGHT of an individual especially, when the party has lost more than 90% elections in last 10 years. Let opposition leadership be decided Democratically," Prashant Kishor tweeted this afternoon. The savage hit at Rahul Gandhi, 51, adds to a growing stack of comments challenging the Gandhis' leadership of the Congress, both internally and from the opposition. Yesterday, Mamata Banerjee had said in an interaction in Mumbai: "If one does nothing and is abroad half the time, then how will one do politics? For politics there should be continuous endeavour." Prashant Kishor has been dropping truth bombs on the Gandhis ever since the collapse of his talks with the party. Sources say the strategist believes the Congress may well expect to play big brother in any opposition strategy for the 2024 national election but not under its current leadership. It is time for the party to act responsibly, say sources close to Mr Kishor.

Need 300 MPs to restore Article 370, don’t see Cong there in 2024: Azad HiIndia Newsdesk

Justifying his silence on Article 370 in public, Azad said only Supreme Court, where the matter is pending, and the Centre can restore it. Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Wednesday said he does not see his party getting 300 seats in the next Lok Sabha elections as things stand currently. Justifying his silence on Article 370 in public, Azad said only Supreme Court, where the matter is pending, and the Centre can restore it. Since the BJP-led central government abrogated Article 370, it won’t restore it, he said at a rally in Poonch district’s Krishna Ghati area. “And when will we have 300 MPs [to form government] on our own? So, I cannot promise to do it [restore Article 370] as we will have to get 300 MPs in 2024. Come what may. May God get us 300 [MPs], but at present I do not see it. That is why I will not make any false promise and avoid talking about Article 370,” he said.

Man builds Taj Mahal replica home for wife HiIndia Newsdesk

A 52-year-old Indian businessman has built a scaled-down replica of the iconic Taj Mahal as a home for his wife of 27 years. Anand Prakash Chouksey built his "monument of love" in Burhanpur city in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. "It was a gift for my wife but also for the town and its people," Mr Chouksey told .. The house cost about 20 million rupees (£199,000; $260,000) to build, he said. The Taj Mahal is a 17th Century mausoleum in Agra city. It was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his queen Mumtaz who died while giving birth to their 14th child. The stunning marble monument, famed for its intricate lattice work, is one of India's biggest tourist attractions. Before the pandemic, it drew as many as 70,000 people every day - a list that has included celebrities and dignitaries. Mr Chouksey's replica - nestled deep inside his sprawling 50-acre property, which includes a hospital, has also been attracting a steady stream of visitors. People walk in the lawns and click pictures, he said. "A lot of people have also started to do their pre-wedding shoots here," Mr Chouksey added.

No holiday to India; new COVID strain forces UAE expats to cancel trip HiIndia Newsdesk

Reports of Covid-19's Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) have thrown a spanner in the works for many UAE holidaymakers planning a trip home to India this winter. Travel agents here told IANS that UAE expatriates are now reconsidering their travel plans abroad during the upcoming National Day and winter holidays due to fears over the Omicron virus. IIT-Bombay & Stanford graduate taking over as Twitter CEO Agrawal, the youngest person to run a company in the S&P 500, is still a relative unknown who has spent no time in the limelight at the controversial social media company.

HiIndia Newsdesk

Washington/San Francisco: By naming Parag Agrawal as chief executive officer, Twitter Inc. is turning inward, choosing a low-profile technologist to steer a social network that has underperformed the market, haltingly introduced new products, and struggled to moderate harmful content under a leader long criticized for divided attention. Agrawal, 37, was named on Monday to succeed cofounder Jack Dorsey after a four-year stint as CTO, a role where he oversaw Twitter’s pursuit of blockchain

and other decentralized technologies. Dorsey, 45, will remain on the board through the summer and will stay at the helm of Square Inc., the payments company he also co-founded. The company’s new chief will inherit Twitter’s political scuffles — including criticism over its ban on former President Donald Trump as well as friction with India’s ruling party. And he’ll have to chase aggressive goals to step up user growth, double revenue and expedite product execution. Agrawal is the youngest person to run a company in the S&P 500,

according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Prior to his move to Twitter, Agrawal earned a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay and a doctorate in computer science from Stanford University. He has worked as a researcher for Microsoft Corp., Yahoo! Inc. and AT&T Corp., according to his LinkedIn profile. He joined Twitter in 2011 as an engineer at a time when the company had fewer than 1,000 employees.

ani Mukerji completes 25 years in Bollywood this year. To mark the personal milestone, the actor was looking for a story that would speak to her. When she heard the narration of director Ashima Chibber’s Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway, Mukerji knew her search had come to fruition. The film is reportedly based on the true story of Sagarika and Anurup Bhattacharya, whose kids Aishwarya and Abhigyan were taken away from them in 2011 by the Norwegian welfare services, alleging extreme parental neglect. In 2012, after the Indian government’s intervention, the kids were sent back to India to their paternal uncle. The drama will be a change of gears for Mukerji who was recently seen in the comic caper, Bunty Aur Babli 2. “My audience loves the fact that I am versatile. I can go from playing Babli to this film, which is a whole new world,” she begins. But the Nikkhil Advani-backed film wasn’t easy to pull off. The team was to begin shooting in April, but the plan was thwarted by the second lockdown. The actor recounts, “The shoot was to go on until May. But the pandemic led to many changes. Estonia, where we were to shoot, closed its borders. So, we went back and forth [on our plans] and finally shot the film in August all the way till September-end.” The drama is centred on a mother’s battle against a state machinery for her children. Being a parent to a five-year-old daughter, does Mukerji feel more aligned with her character? “When I play a part, I don’t play myself emotionally. I feed off the emotions and turmoil of the character. I can try and put myself in her place, and bring to screen her pain. As an actor, I cannot take my personal journey as a mother into a film. The story is not mine. I borrow emotions from my roles, and portray them to the best of my ability.”

Is it dangerous to crack a joke in India?

ndian love a staple of family and community jokes. Political comedy - gags and mimicry - go down well. Young, liberal audiences prefer hardhitting satire. Yet people continue to enjoy body shaming and disability jokes in tone-deaf Bollywood comedies. They laugh aloud to TV comedy awash with slapstick gags and sexist humour. Cuss words don't work with his audiences, says popular Hindi language comic Deepak Saini, who does more than 200 shows a year. Yet Vir Das, one of India's most well-known comedians, says his "filthiest, most obscene show of the year" is one he does for the Rotary Club for 65-year-olds and above. Clearly Indians consume a diverse range of comedy - from the cringeworthy to the ribald to the acerbic - across ages. "To each his own. All kinds of humour co-exist in India. It's a big country," says Balraj Ghai, who owns The Habitat, a popular stand-up venue in Mumbai. Comedy has moved from films and poetry sessions to cafés, clubs, bars, corporate shows, festivals, TV, YouTube and streaming services. A single comedy cafe in Mumbai hosts some 65 shows a month. Fans mob comics and take selfies with them. Many comedians have millions of followers on Twitter. So, on the face of it, it appears that all's well. Except, it isn't. Last fortnight, a monologue by Das in Washington DC triggered a storm of protest, prompting complaints to police and censure from peers. Das said it was "about the duality of two very separate Indias" that he lived in; his critics scorned

Deepak Saini says comics should be 'politically balanced'

"In India, there's a movement going on. If you crack a joke, we will crack you," Palta punned at a show recently. "When I started [comedy] my challenge was [how to frame] the shortest sentence to get to a punchline. Now my stress is that my punchline might lead to a sentence," she said, alluding to comedians being thrown into prison. A climate of intolerance can easily circumscribe comedy. "Ideology has become more important than having a few laughs. How can humour thrive in an environment when you are constantly looking over your shoulder?" Jaideep Verma, director of I am Offended, says. Comedians like Saini don't believe things are as dire. Comics should not avoid politics but "be balanced," he told. "There are right-wing and left-wing comedians. Audiences want balance. Also a lot of English-speaking comedy is simply made up of abuse and cuss words. That doesn't work in the [Indian] mainstream."

Free Credit Card Acceptance is Popular – and Cash Discount is King In today’s digitally driven world, when people prefer to use credit cards over cash in large numbers, there are still independent, small to mid-sized business owners that operate cashonly businesses. These companies are afraid that high credit card processing costs, monthly fees, as well as hidden surcharges and penalties, could have a substantial negative impact on their income and expenses at an alarming rate that adds up. Business owners may not know this, but the percentage of customers paying with credit cards has been on the rise for years. There are strong benefits for business owners to cater to customers and accept credit card payments. Merchants should accept credit cards because consumers have been using credit cards more often than any other payment method since 2003. Shoppers’ preference for credit

Incredible India

The ingenious living bridges of India W

For centuries, indigenous groups in north-east India have crafted intricate bridges from living fig trees. Now this ancient skill is making its way to European cities.

hen monsoon clouds bring pelting rains to the village of Tyrna, Shailinda Syiemlieh takes the nearest bridge to reach the opposite bank of a gushing stream. The bridge is no ordinary structure made of concrete and metal. Instead, it is composed of a single giant fig tree that sits by the riverbank, and the support that Syiemlieh walks over is a mishmash of aerial roots tightly knotted and woven together. The bridge is not only a part of the landscape, it is helping to support its ecosystem at the same time. Tyrna lies just above the plains of Bangladesh in the north-eastern Indian state of Meghalaya, which hosts hundreds of these bridges. For centuries, they have helped

the indigenous Khasi and Jaintia communities to cross swelling rivers in monsoons. "Our ancestors were so clever," says Syiemlieh, "When they couldn't cross rivers, they made Jingkieng Jri – the living root bridges." Researchers consider these living root bridges as an example of indigenous climate resilience. Aside from the connectivity they provide, these bridges attract tourists and help local people earn an income. Meanwhile, as researchers have found, they have regenerative effects on the surrounding environment. Scientists hope this concept of indigenous living architecture can help modern cities adapt better to climate change.

Building these bridges takes decades of work. It begins with planting a sapling of Ficus elastica – a tree that grows abundantly in the subtropical terrain of Meghalaya – in a good crossing place along the riverbank. First the trees develop large buttressing roots and then, after about a decade, the maturing trees sprout secondary aerial roots from further up. These aerial roots have a degree of elasticity, and tend to join and grow together to form stable structures. In a method perfected over centuries, the Khasi bridge builders weave aerial roots onto a bamboo or another wooden scaffolding, wheedle them across the river and finally implant them on the opposite bank. Over time, the roots shorten, thicken and produce offshoots called daughter roots, which are also trained over the river. The builders intertwine these roots with one another or with branches and trunks of the same or another fig tree. They merge by a process called anastomosis – where branching systems like leaf vessels, tendrils and aerial roots naturally fuse together – and weave into a dense frame-like structure. Sometimes, the Khasi builders use stones to cover the gaps in root structures. This network of roots matures over time to bear loads; some bridges can hold up to 50 people at once. The generations that follow the initial bridge builders continue the maintenance of the bridge. While only one

When it rains heavily, small cement bridges wash away and steel bridges tend to rust, but living root bridges withstand the rains – Shailinda Syiemlieh single person may maintain small bridges, most require the collective effort of families or the entire village – sometimes several villages. This process of care and development down the generations can last for centuries, with some bridges dating from 600 years ago. "People came to realise that root bridges are much more durable than modern alternatives, and they cost absolutely nothing. So villagers now repair root bridges they had abandoned in the forest valleys." The Khasi

have incredible knowledge because they live in nature, and are deeply coupled with the ecosystems. We are not," says Ludwig. So his team used digital tools to mimic this process and to settle on a geometry that allowed for weaving twigs together into a roof. The team constantly trims and prunes the trees to encourage them to grow to keep the trees thinner. "We are learning how to react to plant growth in Europe: humans plant trees, trees grow, humans react, trees react again," Ludwig says. "This way of interacting with nature is essential for a sustainable and regenerative future." About 3,500 steps below Syiemlieh's home village of Tyrna is the Double Decker Root Bridge that connects the two banks of the Umshiang River. When water levels rose high, Khasi villagers trained additional roots of the same fig tree across the river higher above the water, creating a second bridge over the first. Today, it's a major tourist attraction. As tourists began flocking, homestays opened. Locals built campsites and guided visitors through the hilly jungle. Makeshift stalls stacked up everything from crisp packets to bottled drinks. In March, when Syiemlieh visited Laitkynsew, a village just south of Tyrna, she saw locals pull, twist and weave aerial roots of a fig tree on bamboo scaffolding to build a triple bridge – two layers run parallel to each another as in the double-decker bridge, while a third root layer is slanted across the river bank Courtsy : BBC

Commenting on the tweet, Sivaramakrishnan said: "have been criticised and colour discriminated all my life, so it doesn't bother me anymore. This, unfortunately, happens in our own country." Earlier, former India opening batter Abhinav Mukund had also spoken on the same issue in the past.

IPL 2022 retention: Jadeja CSK’s first pick, MSD retained too HiIndia Newsdesk

The IPL 2022 retention list for the eight franchises was made official on Tuesday evening. Some retentions were along expected lines, while a few big players like KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan have been released by their franchises. There was no surprise in the defending Indian Premier League champions Chennai Super Kings retaining their captain MS Dhoni. At the same time, though, the CSK retentions came with a subplot. During a conversation with this paper on Tuesday afternoon, a CSK insider said they have

their succession plan ready, as and when Dhoni decides to call it quits. The franchise’s retention list of four players dropped a hint about the way ahead. Ravindra Jadeja was their No. 1 retainee for Rs 16 crore followed by Dhoni for Rs 12 crore, decided with the skipper’s consent. Dhoni is in the autumn of his career, but as CSK supremo and former BCCI president N Srinivasan has time and again mentioned, he is part of the family, a relationship that transcends just donning the yellow shirt and leading the team.

Omicron variant of Covid-19 What we know about it?

A new Covid-19 variant has been identified in South Africa. What's different about the Omicron variant of Covid-19? Are the symptoms different? What precautions should one take? What has the WHO said?

N

ew variants continue to emerge as SARSCoV-2 spreads, and the significance of each mutation becomes known after a period of time. But health authorities worldwide need to keep a constant watch to identify which ones are more important than others. It was as part of such an exercise that the NGS-SA detected B.1.1.529. From what is known currently, B.1.1.529 has multiple spike protein mutations, and

preliminary analysis suggests it is highly infectious. South Africa has reported a four-fold increase in new cases over the last two weeks, coinciding with the emergence of B.1.1.529. On Thursday, the NGSSA said B.1.1.529 has rapidly increased in Gauteng province, which includes Johannesburg and Pretoria, and may already be present in most provinces. The NGS-SA has said the sustained increase in cases is possibly fuelled by cluster outbreaks.

What are the mutations that characterise this variant?

'Omicron' May Be A Wake-Up Call We need more studies to pinpoint the new variant's characteristics, Ms Swaminathan said about comparisons with other Covid variants. The new variant of Covid-19 may act as a "wake-up call" for Covid appropriate behavior in India, Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist at the World Health Organization, told. Stressing the need to be careful and keep using masks, she said that masks have been called "vaccines in your pocket" and have been found to be highly effective, especially in indoor settings. Fully vaccinating all adults, avoiding mass gatherings, wider genome sequencing, and closely monitoring any unusual uptick in cases are some other suggestions by the scientist on fighting 'Omicron' - the new variant of concern. "We need a science-based strategy to battle 'Omicron' she said. Ms Swaminathan added that this variant could be more transmissible than Delta, though one can't say anything authoritatively yet. We will know more about the strain in a few days, she said. 'Omicron', dubbed a "variant of concern" by the World Health Organization, is potentially more contagious than previous variants of the disease, although experts do not know yet if it will cause more or less severe COVID-19 compared to other strains, news agency Reuters reported. Its emergence has caused global concerns, with a fresh wave of travel restrictions and sell-off in financial markets over fears that it will halt economic recovery from the two years of the pandemic. We need more studies to pinpoint the new variant's characteristics, Ms Swaminathan said about comparisons with other Covid variants.

On the mutation profile of the new variant, the NGS-SA has said that B.1.1.529 has “very unusual constellations of mutations” — with 30 in the region that encodes the spike protein, which is responsible for the virus’s entry in human cells. It has said that some of the mutations are well characterised with a known phenotypic impact, affecting transmissibility and immune evasion. Some of these mutations have already been detected in the Alpha and Delta variants. But many other mutations,

the NGS-SA said, have been “rarely observed until now and not well characterised”. So, the full significance of these mutations remain uncertain at this point. “More investigations are underway to determine the possible impact of these mutations on the capacity of the virus to transmit more efficiently, to impact vaccine effectiveness and evade immune response, and/or to cause more severe or milder disease,” the Africa Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has said.

The WHO’s assessment? The WHO said on Friday that its technical advisory group met to review the new variant and designated it as a variant of concern. This effectively means that Omicron has been demonstrated to be associated with one or more of the following changes: increase in transmissibility; and decrease in the effectiveness of diagnostics, vaccines, therapeutics. Earlier in the day, Maria Van Kerkohove, Covid-19 Technical Lead at WHO, had said in a statement:

WHY ARE SCIENTISTS WORRIED? The World Health Organization on Friday classified the B.1.1.529 variant, or Omicron, as a SARSCoV-2 "variant of concern," saying it may spread more quickly than other forms of coronavirus. The Delta variant remains dominant worldwide, accounting for 99.9% of U.S. cases, and it is not yet clear whether Omicron will be able to displace Delta, said Dr. Graham Snyder, medical director, infection prevention and hospital epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. But the new variant has over 30 mutations in the part of the virus that current vaccines target. It is also suspected of driving a spike in new infections in South Africa. Omicron's mutations are likely to render certain COVID-19 treatments - including some manufactured antibodies - ineffective, said Dr. David Ho, professor of microbiology and immunology at Columbia University. Experimental antiviral pills - such as Pfizer Inc's Paxlovid and Merck & Co Inc's molnupiravir target parts of the virus that are not changed in Omicron, and these drugs could become even more important if vaccine-induced and natural immunity are threatened.

“This variant has been detected and reported to us by our colleagues in South Africa. There are fewer than 100 whole-genome sequences that are available. We do not know very much about this yet. What we do know is that his variant has a large number of mutations. And the concern is that when you have so many mutations, it can have an impact on how the virus behaves.”

THE UNKNOWNS Scientists say it could be several more weeks before they can define the type of disease caused by the variant, determine how contagious it is and identify how far it has already spread. Some note that other variants of concern, including Beta, which was also first detected in South Africa, were ultimately replaced by Delta. But the biggest question remains whether protection from Covid-19 vaccines - nearly 8 billion doses have been administered globally - will hold up. And, will people previously infected with the coronavirus be immune from infection with Omicron? Experts also don't yet know whether Omicron will cause more or less severe Covid-19 compared to other coronavirus strains.

BEST RESPONSE?

Omicron has not yet been identified in the United States, but it is likely already here, scientists said. Even without the new variant, US Covid-19 rates have increased in recent weeks, mainly in northern states, as people move indoors to avoid winter weather. Some countries have moved to limit travel from southern Africa. Beyond government restrictions, individuals should still assess their own vulnerability to Covid and tolerance for risk as they make travel decisions for the winter holidays, Snyder from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center said.

Ways To Wear Bootcut Pants In an unlikely turn of events, wide leg jeans or bootcut jeans, as they’ve famously come to be known, have found their way back into our closets and on to the streets. Denims with flared ends fascinating because not only do they accentuate our very Indian hips but also lend style to our otherwise banal wardrobes. Although a little tricky to nail, these chic bottoms can be an option for limitless occasions when styled well and will not fail to impress. Of course, when it comes to inspiration, a little nudge goes a long way. On that note, here’s a round-up of our favourite Bollywood celebrities who opted for their comfy pair of bootcut pants for different events.

Anushka Sharma’s look combines two of our favourite things that we look for in denim: they’re tattered at the knees and are flared. Plus how she just wears it with a hoodie is all of us on most days. A relatable inspiration for sure. Sonam Kapoor Ahuja’ revolutionised how we wear loose denim by pairing it with an oversized top. The vibe is comfortable, and the look is stylish and statement-making. To have Kapoor Ahuja’s wardrobe, isn’t that every fashionista’s ultimate dream?

Virgil Abloh has died, aged 41 after a long battle with cancer

Virgil Abloh, the founder of Off-White and the Men’s Artistic Director of Louis Vuitton, has died, his Instagram account confirmed this afternoon. “We are devastated to announce the passing of our beloved Virgil Abloh, a fiercely devoted father, husband, son, brother, and friend,” the post reads. “He is survived by his loving wife Shannon Abloh, his children Lowe Abloh and Grey Abloh, his sister Edwina Abloh, his parents Nee and Eunice Abloh, and numerous dear friends and colleagues.

Is it a shirt? Is it a jacket? Meet the ‘Shacket’—a new fall wardrobe

With blurring boundaries between our work life and home life, there is an obvious need for versatility when it comes to choosing wardrobe-essentials. Investment pieces that make a smooth transition for a lifestyle in flux. An oversized shirt and a jacket hybrid, most commonly known as the ‘Shacket’, proves to be the perfect investment piece for this fall. Paired with jeans and a shirt or layered over a slip dress, this shirt-jacket hybrid elevates your outfit yet provides the perfect layer for those not ready to fully commit to a jacket just yet.

The stunning Italian setting of House of Gucci, which stars Lady Gaga, Al Pacino, Adam Driver, Jared Leto and Salma Hayek is just as striking as the movie’s wardrobe. Now, Al Pacino’s character Aldo Gucci’s house, which is the gorgeous Villa Balbiano on Lake Como, is available on Airbnb. But, there’s a catch. The 16th century lavish villa is a “historical palazzo that once belonged to the famous Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, who built it at the end of 16th century and used it as his main residence” and used it “to host a gallant and frivolous society where festivals, banquets and dances”, as stated on its official website. It will open its door to one lucky guest for an overnight stay on March 30, 2022. The tariff for the same is fixed at $1,125. The six suite palazzo is, as per the information on t h e w e b s it e , “t h e largest private residence on the lake, occupying over 2ha, with extensive sumptuous garden, which was distinguished by the British Society of Garden Designers, outdoor swimming pool, a private pier and a boathouse. its historic interiors have been filled with finest objets d’art and furniture of past centuries, sourced from Sotheby’s and Christie’s.

Fugitive Mehul Choksi Says “May Be Kidnapped Once Again, Taken To Guyana” HiIndia Newsdesk

New Delhi: Fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi fears that he might be kidnapped again and may be taken to Guyana, from where he may be taken away in an unlawful and illegal manner. In an exclusive interview with ANI, Choksi said, “I may be coerced and kidnapped once again, and taken to Guyana, where there is a strong Indian presence, which may be utilized to spirit me away in an unlawful and illegal manner.” “I am currently confined to the limits of my house in Antigua, my poor health doesn’t allow me to move anywhere else, and the traumatizing experience I suffered at the hands of my Indian captors led to an irreversible degradation,” he alleged.

Omicron Alert: New Rules For India Arrivals And Airports HiIndia Newsdesk

New Delhi: People arriving in India by flights from countries where a new strain of coronavirus, ‘Omicron’, has been detected will need to follow certain entry rules. India announced this to check any spread of the new strain amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Every international passenger coming to India has to fill a self-declaration form and show a negative RT-PCR test report. They can’t enter India if any of these two conditions are not fulfilled. Those coming from “at-risk” nations like South Africa have to give samples for RT-PCR testing after reaching India. Anyone found positive will be quarantined and the sample will be sent for genome sequencing - a method that checks the make-up of an organism. If

They will be tested again on Day 8. There will be random sampling of people for RT-PCR tests if they are arriving from nations considered not at risk. However, the samples of anyone found positive will be sent for genome sequencing and the person will be quarantined. Indian oil-to-telecoms conglomerate Reliance Industries Ltd is considering an offer for British telecom company BT Group Plc, the Economic Times reported on Monday, citing sources familiar with the matter. Billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance might make an unsolicited offer to buy into BT Group or try to get a controlling share in it, the report said, adding that the firm may also propose to partner with BT’s fibre optic arm Openreach and fund its expansion plans. Reliance declined to comment on the report, while BT did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

H1-B Visas For US Drop The Most Foreign Flights Won’t In A Decade - This Is Why Resume On Dec 15 HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk

The resumption of commercial international flights – tentatively scheduled for December 15 -- is likely to be postponed, with the authorities appearing ready to hit the brakes in view of the emergence of the new Covid variant Omicron. Airports across the country are already implementing a series of restrictions on incoming passengers, especially from “at risk” nations, that involve a strict regimen of tests and quarantine. Indicating that the current “air bubble” system of travel will continue, a note from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation today read: “In view of the merging global scenario... the situation is being watched closely in consultation with all stakeholders and an appropriate decision indicating the effective date of resumption of scheduled commercial international passenger services shall be notified in due course”.

PCR Test For Anyone Landing In Mumbai HiIndia Newsdesk

Those flying to Mumbai must have a negative RT-PCR test take within 72 hours of the flight, say new rules spurred by the Omicron variant. Maharashtra’s 7-day institutional quarantine for fliers from ‘at-risk’ countries has been deferred by two days. The Mumbai airport has been asked to tell all domestic airlines not to board passengers for Mumbai without a negative RT-PCR test within 72 hours of departure. In exceptional cases like family distress, says the statement, testing may be allowed on arrival at the Mumbai airport.

Compared with pre-Covid levels in 2019, this year’s number of H-1B employment cases was down 19% for the engineering and mathematics job category. The number of immigrants under the H1-B visa program holding high-tech jobs dropped the most in at least a decade this year in the U.S. amid travel and visa restrictions, even as job openings in the industry reached record highs. Foreign engineering and mathematics workers on H-1B visas fell 12.6% in the fiscal year ending September 2021 compared to the previous year, according to a Bloomberg News analysis of data from the U.S. Department of Labor. It was the second consecutive annual decline for a segment of the workforce that has historically seen consistent job growth. The drop was largely due to a significant slowdown in visa processing during lock downs and tightened immigration policies stemming from the pandemic, according to immigration lawyers and

experts. Compared with pre-Covid levels in 2019, this year’s number of H-1B employment cases was down 19% for the engineering and mathematics job category. “Since March 2020, the processing of any new visas has been dramatically slowed and almost halted by travel restrictions,” said Giovanni Peri, a professor of economics at the University of California, Davis. Some jobs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, may be lost in the visa crunch for good as remote work could offshore them outside of the U.S., according to Peri. Many U.S. visa processing locations have resumed at a slowed pace after an abrupt suspension across all embassies and consulates in 2020. Earlier this year, President Joe Biden allowed a Trump-era ban on H-1B visas to expire.

7-Day Institutional Quarantine Admiral Hari Kumar takes Indian American Named For Fliers From ‘At-Risk’ Nations charge as new Navy chief Investment Ambassador HiIndia Newsdesk In Maharashtra for Tamil Nadu Admiral R. Hari Kumar HiIndia Newsdesk

International passengers from “at-risk” countries will have to take Covid tests thrice - on the second, fourth, and seventh days after arrival. Mumbai: The Maharashtra government on Tuesday said that all international passengers arriving from “at-risk” countries will have to undergo a mandatory seven-day institutional quarantine. Sources at Mumbai airport say that the order to place passengers into compulsory isolation facilities will be implemented immediately. Travellers will be required to pay for the quarantine at designated hotels, a source added. The order may cause confusion at state airports as many passengers are mid-air on the way to the state, and would possibly be unaware of mandatory institutional quarantine rules and the hotel charges they would be required to pay. These passengers will also be required to take RT-PCR tests for Covid thrice - on the second, fourth, and seventh days after arrival.

Admiral Kumar was the western naval commander before taking over as the country’s 25th chief of naval staff.

‘No Harm If Rahane’s Dropped’: Dinesh Karthik On Changes For Mumbai Test HiIndia Newsdesk

“With Shreyas Iyer coming in and doing so well, I think the pressure will obviously be on Rahane and he might be the one to be dropped. This has happened during a tour of South Africa when Rahane was dropped for a game before he again came back. There is no harm if Rahane’s dropped for a game,” Karthik said. “Iyer has literally taken India to safe zone in this Test on his own. He’s done really well. And It’s not like Rahane has not been among the runs in 1-2 Tests. It has been going on for a long time now. I don’t think it’s such a bad thing for him to be dropped. It will ease some of the pressure on him,” he added.
