India Blocks Overseas Funds To Mother Teresa's Charity: Foreign Media HiIndia Newsdesk

India's government has barred the Missionaries of Charity, the Catholic religious order and philanthropic organization started by Mother Teresa, from accessing foreign donations for not meeting eligibility conditions under local laws, the Home Ministry said. The charity, set up by the Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1950, has its headquarters in Kolkata and works with some of the country's most poor and destitute people. The group's application to renew its license to continue getting foreign funds under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act "was refused on 25 December 2021 for not meeting the eligibility conditions," the ministry said in a statement Monday. "No request / revision application has been received from Missionaries of Charity (MoC) for review of this refusal of renewal." The Christian charity confirmed in a statement that the renewal of its FCRA application hasn't been approved and that it has asked its centres not to operate foreign contribution accounts until the matter is resolved. The ministry's statement gave no details on what rules the group had flouted. This is not the first time that a charitable

Since it came to power in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has cracked down on hundreds of NGOs. Last year Amnesty International shut down its India operations after accusing the government of "constant

Hindu hardliners have long accused the charity of using its programmes to convert people to Christianity. The char ity has denie d t hes e allegations. In a statement on Monday, it confirmed that its renewal application had been denied, and that it would not operate any foreign funding accounts "until the matter is resolved". The Kolkata-based charity was founded in 1950 by Mother Teresa, a Roman Catholic nun who moved to India from her native Macedonia. It is one of the world's best-known Catholic charities. Mother Teresa was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her humanitarian work, and she was declared a saint by Pope Francis in 2016, 19 years after her death. The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought to squeeze foreign funding for charities and other NGOs based in India. Last year, restrictions led to the freezing of bank accounts belonging to Greenpeace and Amnesty International.

US senator Harry Reid dies HiIndia Newsdesk

US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin will speak on Thursday, the White House said, as Washington crafts a common response to Russia’s military buildup on the Ukraine border with European allies. The two leaders will discuss a range of topics, including upcoming security talks between the countries and a tense situation in Europe, White House National Security Council spokesperson Emily Horne said in a statement. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Reuters the call was planned for “late Thursday evening,” without elaborating. Horne

said Biden had spoken with leaders across Europe about the situation on the Ukraine border, while Biden administration officials were in touch with NATO, the European Union and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Moscow has alarmed the West by massing tens of thousands of troops near Ukraine in the past two months, following its seizure of Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula in 2014 and its backing of separatists fighting Kyiv troops in eastern Ukraine. Russia denies planning to attack Ukraine and says it has the right to move its troops on its own soil as it likes.

Harry Reid, the pugnacious son of a Nevada hardrock miner who rose from poverty to become the US Senate majority leader and earned a reputation as a fierce partisan fighter during an era of political gridlock in Washington, died after a long battle with pancreatic cancer on Tuesday. He was 82. In that job Reid regularly clashed with the Republicans and maintained poor relations with the opposition party’s leaders.

"I would imagine, given the size of our country and the diversity of vaccination versus no vaccination, that it likely will be more than a couple of weeks, probably by the end of January, I would think," Fauci told CNBC said on Wednesday in response to a question about when the coronavirus cases will peak in the United States. On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provided data showing that the Omicron variant accounted for 58.6% of all new infections in the United States in the week ending on December 25. The Omicron variant, which was first detected in South Africa in November, is said by public health officials to be more transmissible but produces milder cases.

US breaks daily Covid case record, A new era: Nasa’s James Webb Space Telescope launched holiday plan goes haywire

HiIndia Newsdesk

The US record for daily coronavirus cases has been broken, as two highly contagious variants — delta and omicron — have converged to disrupt holiday travel and gatherings, deplete hospital staffs and plunge the US into another long winter. The seven-day average of US cases topped 267,000 on Tuesday, according to a New York Times database. The

milestone was marked after a year that has whipsawed Americans from a relaxation of rules in the spring to a delta-driven summer wave to another surge that accelerated with astonishing speed as omicron emerged after Thanksgiving. The record came only a day after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reduced the number of days that infected Americans should remain isolated to five days from 10. The CDC changed course as omicron’s rapid spread has worsened a labour shortage, upending hospitality, medical and travel industries. The agency did not recommend rapid testing before people left isolation, and experts warned that omission risked seeding new cases and heaping even more pressure on already overburdened health systems.

Nasa’s James Webb Space Telescope, built to give the world a glimpse of the universe as it existed when the first galaxies formed, was launched by rocket early Saturday from South America’s northeastern coast, opening a new era of astronomy. The revolutionary $9-billion infrared

telescope, hailed by Nasa as the premier space-science observatory of the next decade, was carried aloft inside the cargo bay of an Ariane 5 rocket that blasted off at about 7.20am from the European Space Agency’s (ESA) launch base in French Guiana. The flawless Christmas Day launch, with a countdown conducted in French, was carried live on a joint Nasa-ESA webcast. After a 27-minute ride into space, the £14,000 instrument was released from the upper stage of the French-built rocket, and should gradually unfurl to nearly the size of a tennis court over the next 13 days as it sails onward on its own. Live video captured by a camera mounted on the rocket’s upper stage showed the Webb moving gently away high above the Earth as it was jettisoned.

Antibodies that can block Omicron variant identified HiIndia Newsdesk

Scientists have identified antibodies that neutralise Omicron and other variants of coronavirus by targeting areas that remain essentially unchanged as the virus mutates. The research, published in the journal Nature, may help design vaccines and antibody treatments that will be effective against not only Omicron but other variants that may emerge in the future. “This finding tells us that by focusing on antibodies that target these highly conserved sites on the spike protein, there is a way to overcome the virus’ continual evolution,” said David Veesler, an associate professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine in the US.

for almost 23,000 cases, after reporting was delayed over Christmas. Meanwhile, frustration has grown over a lack of available lateral flow tests. But the public should keep trying to access testing as supply will be normal by next week, UK Health Security Agency boss Dr Jenny Harries said. She also urged people to "use tests they have at home and not pull on the system". On the high levels of cases, she said: "We need to watch data for a couple of weeks - after new year - to be absolutely sure which way this wave is going."

The combination of Delta and Omicron variants is driving a dangerous tsunami of Covid-19 cases, the World Health Organization (WHO) chief has said. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus' words came as the US and countries across

Ghislaine Maxwell guilty of helping Jeffrey Epstein abuse girls HiIndia Newsdesk

Ghislaine Maxwell

Ghislaine Maxwell has been found guilty of recruiting and trafficking young girls to be sexually abused by the late American financier Jeffrey Epstein. The 60-year-old was found guilty on five of the six counts she faced including the most serious charge, that of sex trafficking a minor. The verdict was reached after five full days of deliberation by a 12-person

jury in New York. It means the British socialite could spend the rest of her life behind bars. The verdict followed a month-long trial that featured testimony from four women who described being abused by Epstein between 1994 and 2004. Maxwell showed no visible sign of emotion as the verdict was read out on Wednesday, only pouring herself a glass of water which she sipped from twice. Shortly after, her legal team said they were working on an appeal. "We firmly believe in Ghislaine's innocence," her lawyer, Bobbi Sternheim, told reporters. Annie Farmer, one of the women who testified against Maxwell, said: "I am so relieved and grateful that the jury recognised [her] pattern of predatory behaviour." "I hope that this verdict brings solace to all who need it and demonstrates that no one is above the law," she said. US Attorney Damian Williams welcomed the verdict and commended the "bravery" of the victims who came forward.

Europe reported record new cases. France reported Europe's highest ever daily figure for the second day in a row, at 208,000 cases. And the US has reported a record average of 265,427 cases a day over the last week, according to Johns Hopkins. Denmark, Portugal, the UK and Australia have all also reported recordbreaking figures. Poland reported 794 Covid-related deaths on Wednesday, the highest number in its fourth wave of the pandemic. More than three-quarters of these were unvaccinated people.

Australia: Hundreds given false Covid results in Sydney lab error HiIndia Newsdesk

A Sydney lab has told hundreds of people they did not have Covid when they in fact had tested positive, amid soaring infections in the area. The mistake, which took place over the Christmas period, was due to a "data processing error". The Australian state of New South Wales is seeing rising infection numbers following the arrival of the hyper-infectious Omicron Covid variant. Officials say an increase in swabbing tests has caused massive backlogs. Some of those affected have expressed concern that they may have unknowingly infected their loved ones over Christmas. The SydPath lab apologised in a statement on Tuesday and said the mistake, which affected 886 people in total, had happened as workers faced an "unprecedented" volume of tests.

Hong Kong pro-democracy media Religious freedom a central outlet Stand News shut down tenet of UK’s foreign policy: Truss HiIndia Newsdesk

Hong Kong pro-democracy media outlet Stand News shut down on Wednesday after police raided its office, froze its assets and arrested senior staff on suspected “seditious publication” offences, in the latest crackdown on the city’s media. Stand News, set up in 2014 as a non-profit, was the most prominent remaining pro-democracy publication in Hong Kong after a national security investigation this year led to the closure of jailed tycoon Jimmy Lai’s Apple Daily tabloid. The raid raises more concerns about press freedom in the former British colony, which returned to Chinese rule in 1997 with the promise that a wide range of individual rights would be protected, media advocacy groups said.

HiIndia Newsdesk

British foreign secretary Liz Truss, who is aggressively setting out her stall to be her country’s next Prime Minister , has made freedom of religious practice a central tenet of the UK’s foreign policy. So far she has not commented on the Indian government’s decision not to renew the foreignfunding licence for Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity but the news has been widely reported in the British media. The BBC said: “The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought to squeeze foreign funding for charities and other NGOs based in India…There have also been several attacks on religious minorities across India.”

Nagaland’s rights groups and even the state government have been demanding the centre to withdraw AFSPA

Kohima: The controversial law AFSPA that gives sweeping powers to security forces has been extended for another six months in Nagaland, where the army is conducting a court of inquiry into an ambush that went horribly wrong on December 4. Cases of the highly infectious Omicron are also increasing rapidly in and around the big cities. “Take steps now to avoid increased mortality,” was the Centre’s advice, sources said. The idea of taking Delhi’s GRAP model across the country is also being considered, top sources said. CURRENT AFFAIRS India has approved two new vaccines, expanding its programme amid fears of a third wave fuelled by Omicron.

T

he new vaccines - Serum Institute of India's Covovax and Biological E's Corbevax have both been authorised for "restricted use in emergency situation". India has now approved eight vaccines, three of which have been developed in India. The country has so far given more than 1.4 billion doses. The government aimed to vaccinate all Indians by the end of this year but is falling short of that target. About 62% of eligible adults have been fully vaccinated and more than 90% have received at least one jab since the beginning of the drive in January. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India would begin administering booster shots - or "precaution doses" as he called them - to healthcare and frontline workers, and those above 60

with comorbidities from 10 January. He said India would also begin vaccinating 15-18-year-olds from 3 January. India's daily caseload is around 6,000, but cases of the Omicron variant - about 653 now - have been rising in several states, prompting night curfews and a slew of other restrictions. It's unclear still if the newly approved vaccines will be deployed for booster shots, or if the government will insist on the third shot being the same as the first two.

be available in India.

What do we know about these vaccines? The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, locally known as Covishield, is made from a weakened version of a common cold virus (known as an adenovirus) from chimpanzees. It has been modified to look more like coronavirus - although it can't cause illness. Covaxin by Indian firm Bharat Biotech is an inactivated vaccine which means that it is made up of killed coronaviruses, making it safe to be injected into the body. The vaccine ran into controversy after India's regulators gave it emergency approval in January while the third phase of the trial was still underway, sparking scepticism and questions from experts. Bharat Biotech, which makes the vaccine, has since published data suggesting 78% efficacy.

The Sputnik vaccine, developed b y Mo s c o w ' s G am al e y a Institute, also generated some controversy initially after being rolled out before the final trial data had been released. But scientists say its benefits have now been demonstrated. It uses a coldtype virus, engineered to be harmless, as a carrier to deliver a small fragment of the coronavirus to the body. After being vaccinated, the body starts to produce antibodies especially tailored to the virus.

How do the new vaccines work? C orb e vax f rom Indi an phar ma company Biological E was developed in collaboration with US-based Dynavax and Baylor College of Medicine. It is India's first indigenously developed recombinant protein sub-unit vaccine, health minister Mansukh Mandaviya said. That is, it's made up of the coronavirus' "spike protein", which the virus uses to latch on and enter human cells. When injected, this is expected to trigger an immune response in the body., Covovax is a local version of the Novavax vaccine, and will be produced by the Serum Institute of India (SII), which is also manufacturing the OxfordAstraZeneca jab, known locally as Covishield. The vaccine was more than 90% effective in a late-stage US-based clinical trial, according to the company.

What vaccines had India approved before this? India has already approved six other vaccines. It's currently using only three Covishield, Covaxin by Indian firm Bharat Biotech and Russian-made Sputnik V - for its vaccination drive. Of these, Covishield accounts for over 90% of the doses given so far.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India would begin administering booster shots - or "precaution doses" as he called them - to healthcare and frontline workers, and those above 60 with comorbidities from 10 January.

It also approved ZyCoV-D vaccine the world's first DNA vaccine against Covid - by Indian firm Cadilla, but it's not available yet. The federal government had also approve d Johns on & Johns on's

single-dose vaccine, which was to be introduced in India through a supply agreement with Biological E; and it had authorised Indian pharma company Cipla to import the Moderna vaccine. But it's unclear when either of those will

The ZyCoV-D vaccine uses plasmids - or small rings of DNA that contain genetic information - to deliver the jab between two layers of the skin. The three-dose ZyCoV-D vaccine prevented symptomatic disease in 66% of those vaccinated, according to an interim study quoted by the vaccine maker Cadila Healthcare. It is also India's first needle-free Covid-19 jab - administered with a disposable needle-free injector, which uses a narrow stream of the fluid to penetrate the skin and deliver the jab to the proper tissue. Previous DNA vaccines have worked well in animals but not humans. The challenge, say scientists, was how to push the plasmid DNA into the human cell so that it gives a durable immune response. Dr Jeremy Kamil, a virologist at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, told the BBC that it was imperative that the efficacy data of the vaccine "be vetted independently".

India May See “Explosive Growth” In Cases Within Days HiIndia Newsdesk

“It is likely that India will see a period of explosive growth in daily cases and that the intense growth phase will be relatively short,” said Paul Kattuman, a professor at the University of Cambridge.

India added 9,195 Covid cases Wednesday --the highest new daily cases in three weeks.

Sadhu: No remorse for Gandhi abuse

HiIndia Newsdesk

Kalicharan Maharaj, facing FIRs in Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra for allegedly using derogatory words against Mahatma Gandhi, said on Tuesday that he harboured no remorse for his utterances. In a video message, Kalicharan claimed that his statements were correct and said he hated Mahatma Gandhi. Raipur senior superintendent of police Prashant Agrawal said they had received information that Kalicharan had released a video. The police are conducting a probe and efforts were on to arrest him, the officer said. In the video, Kalicharan says: “An FIR has been registered against me for making derogatory remarks on Gandhi, but I do not have any remorse for it.”

India may see a spurt in the Covid-19 growth rate within days and head into an intense but shortlived virus wave as the highly-infectious omicron variant moves through the crowded nation of almost 1.4 billion. “It is likely that India will see a period of explosive growth in daily cases and that the intense growth phase will be relatively short,” Paul Kattuman, professor at the Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge which has developed a Covid-19 India tracker, wrote in an email. “New infections will begin to rise in a few days, possibly within this week,” he said, adding that it was hard to predict how high the daily cases could go. Kattuman and his team of researchers, developers of the India Covid tracker, are seeing a sharp rise in infection rates across India. The tracker spotlighted six states as a “significant concern” in a Dec. 24 note, with adjusted growth rate of new cases exceeding 5%. This had expanded to 11 Indian states by Dec. 26, according to the tracker, which corrects for “day of the week effects” and other variations. India added 9,195 Covid cases Wednesday --the highest new daily cases in three weeks -- pushing the total confirmed tally to 34.8 million infections.

Being an actress, it is difficult to find a partner - Mrunal Thakur While her career is on an upswing with films like Jersey, Mrunal discusses how professional demands and insecurities take a toll on actors’ love lives

M

ost actors will tell you that they chose a film because their character spoke to them. But Mrunal Thakur surprises us by saying that she initially didn’t identify with her role in Jersey. “The love story resonated with me, but [understanding] the ’90s portion was difficult,” she begins. The actor plays a pragmatic wife who has to run the house after her husband’s cricketing dreams are shattered. “Initially, it was difficult to [identify] with her because she was born in the ’70s. I [questioned] her actions. But Shahid [Kapoor] made me understand that it [would be difficult] for a woman in the ’90s to have a husband who doesn’t earn. He is at home, eating the bread that his wife has earned; that would be humiliating in that era. I did the film because I haven’t seen such an emotional story in a while.” Jersey winds up 2021 for the actor, who was also seen

in Toofaan and Dhamaka. While she bags prominent films, her detractors may argue that her characters are overshadowed by her male counterparts. “People keep asking me why I play safe, but I don’t think I do. I go with the flow and want to make the most of the opportunities. I hope after Jersey, filmmakers trust me enough to cast me in risky and challenging roles.” Where it’s easy to see that her career is on an upswing, little is known about Thakur’s personal life. Quiz her on it, and she indicates that the demands of the profession take a toll on love. “I don’t know about other professions, but being an actress, it is difficult to find a partner. As humans, we get insecure. It’s better to let go of people who are insecure. I don’t want my partner to tell me, ‘You can’t do this film.’ The only lover I have is the camera. If anyone wants to be with me, that’s great, but it’ll be tough.”

Priyanka Chopra: There is nothing like Citadel on television

Pr iyan ka C hopra Jonas recently spoke about her forthcoming series with the Russo Brothers titled Citadel. The spy action series, also starring Richard Madden, has been described a s “a n e x p a n s i v e a n d groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” As the synopsis suggests, the series will spawn multiple spinoffs in many countries. Talking to Collider about the series, Priyanka Chopra said, “There is nothing like Citadel on television, I think. It’s extremely high scale, extremely finessed action, stunts, but at the same time it’s a drama and it has heart. So, I think there is really nothing like that on TV right now and that is one of the big reasons I really wanted to do it. Doing something for multiple episodes…you know it’s a commitment.” PeeCee added that the fact that it was a limited series allowed her to dip her toes in television again. She also said that the training for the show was “very, very intense”. “It was a lot of work, but I am so excited to share it with the world, because I just saw a bunch of it recently and I think it’s very special. We’ve worked really hard on it, and you’ll see that,” she said.

Shruti Haasan tests her acting prowess

Shruti Haasan has dabbled in digital entertainment twice. There was a “small guest role” in her cousin, Suhasini Mani Ratnam’s directorial venture, Putham Pudhu Kaalai, and another venture, Xlife, which was part of the Telugu anthology, Pitta Kathalu. However, it is the series adaptation of Ravi Subramanian’s novel, The Bestseller She Wrote, that Haasan believes is her “true” web debut. “I am a huge fan of the web series format and found [the show] interesting. The adaptation is the first full-fledged web series I have taken up. It is amazing to [play a] complex character,” says the actor.

t’s hard to steal some time from Yami Gautam who has been “mad busy” shooting films back-toback throughout 2021. The actor will soon be seen in Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s Lost. Quiz her whether there is enough room for creativity in such a tight schedule, and she says, “I don’t underestimate the importance of giving enough prep-time for my characters. When you are this busy, that is sacrosanct. The quality of work speaks louder than the volume. Every film is an exhibit to get better work. Prep is not just about physical training; it is about being emotionally on the same plane as your character. I ensure that I know my script thoroughly, nuance my part with imagination, and nail the body language.” Chowdhury’s emotional thriller tackles the subject of media integrity, with Gautam playing a crime reporter. For the actor, it was an all-consuming project. “If we are talking about media integrity in today’s times, it must feel authentic. The characters have to feel familiar. Tonyda [Chowdhury] gives the freedom to be as natural as possible. It makes me proud to be part of a film that stands for certain values. In a fast-paced world driven by competition, emotions don’t hold the same value. Lost and A Thursday are two films that have made me discover a lot about myself.” Films aside, her unafraid attitude reflects in her social media posts too. Recently, she opened up on battling keratosis pilaris, a condition that leaves the skin patchy and with small bumps. Having been the poster girl for glowing skin for over a decade, Gautam’s post was a reminder to be real at a time when the beauty industry propagates perfection. “Writing the post wasn’t difficult; it was liberating. The journey from the time when I learnt of my condition to the day I put the post out, was challenging. When people saw me at shoot, they would talk about how it should be airbrushed or concealed. That would affect me a lot. It took years to accept it and wear my confidence. I was overwhelmed to see the response to the post.”

Adani Group is preparing to ship the first coal cargo from Australia’s most controversial mine, after battling a seven-year campaign by climate activists and defying a global push away from fossil fuels. The Carmichael mine in outback Queensland state is likely to be the last new thermal coal mine to be built in Australia, the world’s biggest coal exporter, but will be a vital source of supply for importers such as power plants in India. “The first shipment of high-quality coal from the Carmichael mine is being assembled at the North Queensland Export Terminal in Bowen ready for export as planned,” a spokeperson for Adani’s Australian subsidiary Bravus Mining & Resources said in a statement. The statement did not say where the shipment was

headed, except that “we have already secured the market for the 10 million tonnes per annum of coal that will be produced at the Carmichael Mine”. When Adani bought the project in 2010, it envisioned building a 60-million-tonne-a-year mine with a 400km rail line for around $16 billion , one of several projects planned in the then untapped Galilee Basin. It shrank the mine plan in 2018 to 10 million tonnes a year following a sustained “Stop Adani” campaign by green groups which scared off lenders, insurers and major engineering firms. “That sharpening of the plan has kept operating costs to a minimum and ensured the project remains within the first quartile of the global cost curve,” Adani’s Australian CEO Lucas Dow told Reuters in emailed comments.

Distrust in global diplomacy and disunity at home

India's 2 challanges

U

nlike the US, China is proclaiming that it is willing to use force — if its attempts at peaceful resolutions of its territorial claims are unsuccessful. All of China’s claims are linked to the middle and smaller powers with which it has established strong and advantageous economic relations. China in Asia and Russia in Eastern Europe have joined the US in the practice of economic coercion under the shadow of armed intimidation. Both methods involve contestation for control of technology as seen in the arms race, and global contestation to dominate the Internet and space. China’s aggressive moves against India, Japan, Taiwan, and the smaller nations of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have resulted in the convergence of their interests with those of the US, which is seeking to prevent the growth of China’s influence in Asia as part of the global power struggle. Capitalising on distrust, China’s cocktail of economic weaponization and armed coercion is intended to produce the psychological impact of helplessness that may be expected to result in capitulation. Both forms of coercion are often angled to exploit the grey zones where deniability, bending of international norms and leveraging ungoverned spaces are feasible. China’s operational design seeks to exploit the US’s image of its unwillingness to fight for others.

India has all its fingers dipped India is the primary contestant in the Himalayas and an involved party in the Indo-Pacific region. China’s aggression in Ladakh and its continued intransigence to restore the territorial status quo have provoked India to shift its weight towards the US. The resurrection of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) is a testimony to this fact. India has made it clear that it will not be a part of any military alliance but would instead prefer to sit in a common tent, depending on the issues at stake. Therefore, it maintains memberships in cross-cutting groups such as BRICS (Brazil, Russian, India, China, and South Africa), the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), the RIC (Russia, India, China) Forum, the QUAD and carries out military exercises inter alia with the US, Russia, Japan, Australia, Singapore, and Vietnam. As its power struggle with the US deepens, containing India to the subcontinent in order to delay its rise has gained salience for China. From an Indian perspective, the aggression on the northern border is in furtherance of China’s containment strategy, which is expected to curtail its resources to develop its capacity as a maritime

in 2021

That so much is happening so fast in India’s strategic sphere seems an understatement. The year 2021 witnessed an acceleration of certain trends that had been underway for over a decade. Amidst the swirling clouds of geopolitical frictions at global, regional, and domestic levels fear fuelled by uncertainty emerges as the preponderant emotion. Hope continues to fight for survival and looks to be losing ground. Distrust tarnishes most relationships.

Focus on what matters, not historical rifts As 2021 comes to a close, it is apparent that internal disunity is growing and has surfaced as a threat that can no longer be ignored in India’s management of its strategic affairs. The emergence of religion as the ideological horse to gain political power has ignited historic rifts. These are issues that modern India has been struggling to suppress in order to focus on what really matters to its citizens — poverty, illiteracy, and ill health. The ideological zeal of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been steadily pulling the train of Hindu majoritarianism and in the process, achieved remarkable electoral successes. The BJP has consolidated its political power at the Centre and in various states. But socio-economic progress has been waylaid by majoritarian political mobilisation. Three incidents from the last two weeks are symptomatic of India’s political parties and mainstream media remaining silent to blatant and unlawful acts that violate constitutional and communal propriety. Two of them took place in Punjab where reported acts of sacrilege resulted in lynching in two cases. Both were met with political condemnation of the sacrilege. But on lynching, there was silence across the board and police inaction. Another incident happened in Haridwar, where a three-day ‘Dharam Sansad’, organised by Hindu extremists, made explicit calls to take up arms against Muslims. Once again, it was met with silence across political parties, police coldness, and media indifference. If India’s political parties are so blinded by electoral calculations and are unwilling to act against assaults on the nation’s social cohesion, the threat to India’s internal unity is indeed grave. India cannot afford to alienate its religious minorities, as it will be giving way to exploitation by its adversaries due to its toxic communal soil. India’s economic growth — the primary driver of socio-economic progress — is under stress from endogenous and exogenous sources including climate change and environmental pollution. Governance is challenged by large-scale unemployment and economic disparities. Centralisation of power and the loss of independence of most constitutional organs of the State have weakened the institutional checks and balances systems that preserve the rule of law. Instead, a ‘rule by law’ has become the signature tab of governance. Layered with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, India’s internal dynamics are taking a beating in its ability to cope with the challenges and squatting on its strategic panorama. It is imperative that the political class recognises the enemy within ourselves. It is high time they woke up and accepted these harsh realities and never lose hope for constructive change.

Chinese aggression shows it wants to contain India, and Pakistan is acting as its proxy. But we're stuck with internal rifts. power. This is also coupled with China’s attempts at enhancing its influence in India’s strategic neighbourhood. These attempts continued in 2021 and have gained wider ground in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Bhutan, Nepal, and several African countries. Pakistan’s role as its proxy has carried on unabated. The assent of the Taliban to power in Afghanistan is certainly catastrophic in humanitarian terms for the Afghan people, but Pakistan may find that its machinations have gained for it only a pyrrhic victory. A possibility is playing out in refugee flows and increased terrorism in Pakistan’s domestic politics. There is also the potential for boosting the salience of terrorism as its preferred foreign policy tool against India. This could test the latter’s military capability alongside looming Chinese threats in the Himalayas.

No more a ‘fence-sitter’ India-Russian relations have shown somewhat unexpected resilience in the face of the headwinds produced by the China-US struggle. The recent visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India and the slew of agreements in diverse sectors are clearly encouraging developments. The survival of the S-400 air defence deal despite opposition from the US is also emblematic. India has, in addition, achieved some degree of success in enhancing cooperation with Japan, the European Union (EU), the UK, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore. Improving cooperation with Iran remains a work in progress. In essence, India has partly shed its image of a fence-sitter.

JERSEY CITY, NJ -New Jersey on Monday rep or ted another nine confirmed COVID-19 deaths and 8,831 confirmed positive cases, which despite breaking a streak of five-digit tallies, coincided with the highest seven-day case average ever recorded and a surge in hospitalizations. While the number of cases reported Monday is much lower, nearly 30%, from the previous day, it’s probably due to fewer tests being conducted over the holidays and a delay in getting results processed and reported to the state. The state’s seven-day case average, at 12,237, is the highest ever recorded. It’s more than double the average a week ago and is more than 500% percent higher than this time last month.

Born in Pauri town of Pauri Garhwal district, modern-day Uttarakhand state, on 16 March 1958, his family had been serving in the Indian Army for multiple generations. General Rawat received many medals and honors for his distinguished services to the nation. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and US Defense Secretary Llyod Austin in their tributes expressed: “We’ll remember Gen. Rawat as an exceptional leader who served his country and contributed to the US-India defense relationship.”

WASHINGTON, DC – The Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission this month announced the winners of the 2022 Marshall Scholarships chosen by the eight regional committees. World War II under the Marshall Plan. Following are the Indian American and South Asian Americans named 2022 Marshall Scholars: Rohit Goyal of Yale University earned a B.A. in economics at Yale and was elected into Phi Beta Kappa. He also began a discussion series on economic policy for students and faculty. Akhil Rajan, also of Yale, earned a B.A. and M.A. in political science at Yale. He studies spatial inequality in the context of both political and economic divides. In the past, he has worked on policy for campaigns at the local, Senate, and presidential levels, was well as in his work as a fellow of the Kerry Initiative at Yale, an interdisciplinary program that tackles pressing global challenges, and as a political appointee in the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the BidenHarris administration.

HEALTH

This Abs Workout Only Takes 5 Minutes

But It’s Intense

Time: 5 minutes Equipment: 5 to 10 pound kettlebell or dumbbell, mat Good for: Abs

Instructions: For each move, perform as many reps as indicated. Continue to the next move. After you've completed all three moves, rest for 30 seconds, then you have the option to repeat the five-minute circuit two to three times if you want to dial up the intensity even more. Sweat trainer Kelsey Wells says she uses this abs sequence as part of her PWR At Home workout program. It's perfect for clients who want to transform their core, and even helped Kelsey get sculpted and toned during her own fitness journey.

X Plank

How to:

Start in a high plank with feet shoulder-width apart. Engage your core, elevate your hips, and push back like you're doing a downward-facing dog. Reach toward your left foot with your right hand. Return to a high plank and repeat on the other side. Keep alternating between left and right for 10 reps on each side.

Straight-Leg Raise

How to:

Lie on your back on a mat with arms at your sides (place your hands under your butt, palms down, for additional support) legs extended. Make sure to keep your lower back glued to the ground. Engage your abs muscles by drawing your belly button in toward your spine. Slowly raise your legs until they form a 90-degree angle with your hips. Complete 10. Continue to the next move.

Russian Twist

How to:

Start seated on a mat holding a kettlebell or dumbbell at your chest, knees bent, and heels firmly planted. Lean back slightly so that your core is engaged, raise your feet off the mat, and balance on your sitz bones. While keeping your lower body as still as possible, twist your torso to the right and gently touch your elbow to the mat next to your right hip (or as far as you can). Return to the starting position. Repeat on the other side. Keep alternating between right and left for 10 reps on each side

A Simple Strategy to Keep Your Body in Fat-Burning Mode If you’re looking to reduce your body fat, you’ve probably heard that you should have frequent, small meals, because it’s “good for the metabolism”. However, as with a lot of topics in the sphere of nutrition, this is a complicated matter, and the current literature is leaning towards avoiding snacks if we want to reduce our body fat. Frequent snacking leads to greater fat gain due to the body remaining in fat-making mode from the constant influx of food. Therefore, for optimal health, we want to avoid eating between meals. This allows our fat-making processes to switch off and our bodies to start burning stored fat.

The Problem with Snacking

Our body’s fat-making process stays on

If we are continually eating throughout the day without a break, our body’s fat-making processes will remain on. According to Dr. Satchin Panda, fat-storing only turns off after 2 hours without food. Therefore, we want to aim for about 3–4 hour blocks of time throughout the day where we are not consuming

any calories. Remember, this includes drinks with calories, such as sweetened tea or coffee, or a dash of milk or cream.

What You Can Do

• Take breaks during the day for at least 3 hours where you are not consuming any calories. • If you don’t want to give up your snack food, just eat your usual snack right after your meal, instead of an hour or two later. You still get your snacks, but you also get the break. • Ensure your meals are nutrient-dense and filling so that this 3 hour break isn’t difficult. Eating adequate healthy fats, protein, and fiber will ensure you stay full between meals. • Drink black coffee if you are having trouble going a few hours without food. It has zero calories and also acts as an appetite suppressant. • frequent snacking actually leads to greater fat gain due to the body constantly remaining in fatmaking mode from the constant influx of food. Therefore, if we want to reduce our body fat, we need to avoid eating between meals.

Precise launch and excess fuel could help extend lifespan of

NASA’S MOST AMBITIOUS SPACE TELESCOPE NASA’s most expensive space telescope, James Webb, which will seek to answer some of the most important questions about the origin of the universe and hence our own origin, is expected to conduct science operations longer than its 10-year lifetime. g By Mayank Chhaya THAT bit of impressive feat has been made possible by the fact that the $10 billion Webb needs less propellant than originally planned for trajectory correction as it travels a million miles from Earth to an orbit known as L2 or the second Lagrange point. In simpler terms, as of now it has some excess fuel that could extent its life. An analysis by the Webb team shows that “less propellant than originally planned for is needed to correct Webb’s trajectory toward its final orbit around the second Lagrange point known as L2, a point of gravitational balance on the far side of Earth away from the Sun. Consequently, Webb will have much more than the baseline estimate of propellant – though many factors could ultimately affect Webb’s duration of operation.” NASA attributed the extra propellant to “the precision of the Arianespace Ariane 5 launch, which exceeded the requirements needed to put Webb on the right path.” What added to that was also the precision of the first mid-course correction maneuver. “The accuracy of the launch trajectory had another result: the timing of the solar array deployment. That deployment was executed automatically after separation from the Ariane 5 based on a stored command to deploy either when Webb reached a certain attitude toward the Sun ideal for capturing sunlight to power the observatory – or automatically at 33 minutes after launch. Because Webb was already in the correct attitude after separation from the Ariane 5 second stage, the solar array was able to deploy about a minute and a half after separation, approximately 29 minutes after launch,” NASA said. The telescope which was launched with textbook precision on December 25. Once it reaches the L2 point the telescope will stay in line with the Earth as it moves around the Sun. This allows the satellite’s large sunshield to protect the telescope from the light and heat of the Sun and Earth (and Moon), according to NASA. The telescope’s job will involve it looking back billions of years over hundreds of thousands of trillions

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday said that the Central Drug Authority CDSCO has approved the Serum Institute of India’s COVID-19 vaccine Covovax, Biological E’s jab Corbevax and anti-Covid pill Molnupiravir for restricted use in emergency situation. The announcement comes a day after the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) on COVID-19 of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) recommended granting emergency use authorisation (EUA) to the COVID-19 vaccines Covovax and Corbevax with certain conditions. It also had recommended granting restricted emergency use approval to the drug Molnupiravir for treatment of adult patients with COVID-19 and who have

Yellow alert issued in Delhi HiIndia Newsdesk

New Delhi: Two Punjab Congress MLAs, including a prominent leader tipped to be the party’s candidate in the state election, joined the BJP today. Among them is Congress MLA Fateh Jung Singh Bajwa, the brother of senior party leader and MP Pratap Bajwa. Fateh Jung Bajwa is the MLA from Punjab’s Qadian. The constituency may now see a battle of the brothers in the election with Pratap Bajwa reportedly eager to contest from there.

Schools to shut, public transport to run at 50% seating capacity Restrictions under the yellow alert for Covid will be implemented in Delhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said Tuesday. The restrictions under the Covid Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) include

shutting all educational institutions, capping wedding and funeral gatherings to 20, reducing seat occupancy in Delhi Metro and buses to 50%, among other things. According to GRAP, which was notified by the government in August this year, different restrictions are supposed to come into force if cases, positivity rate or hospitalisations increase beyond certain limits. Delhi had a positivity rate of 0.55% on Sunday and 0.68% on Monday. The yellow alert is issued when the city sees a positivity rate of over 0.5% for two consecutive days, cases cross 1,500 in a week, or average occupancy of oxygen beds in hospitals remains 500 for a week. Kejriwal also said that the government will be forced to close markets if crowding continues and Covidappropriate behaviour is not followed.

BCCI president and former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been admitted to a city hospital after testing positive for COVID-19, the cricket board sources said on Tuesday. Ganguly is double vaccinated and has been travelling extensively, taking part in all professional activities. The 49-year-old was rushed to a hospital late on Monday night as a precautionary measure after his RT-PCR test returned positive. “He was taken to Woodlands Nursing Home last night. He has been given medication and is currently stable,” a BCCI source, who is keeping track of Ganguly’s health, told

World Hits Record Daily Covid Cases Thanks To Omicron HiIndia Newsdesk

Global Covid-19 cases hit a daily record on Monday, disrupting the holiday season a year after vaccines first started rolling out and two years after the emergence of the virus that many hoped would be fleeting. The more than 1.44 million worldwide infections smashed the prior record after factoring out a day in December 2020 when Turkey backdated a significant number of cases. A more conservative gauge -- the seven-day rolling average that smooths out one-time fluctuations and holiday reporting irregularities -- is also at a record level, thanks to a tidal wave of Omicron infections
