Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema Alec Baldwin shooting blocking Biden's climate agenda Criminal charges may be HiIndia Newsdesk

Joe Biden heads to Glasgow in the coming days for a crucial climate summit at which he hopes to cajole international partners into era-defining commitments to reduce carbon emissions. But two senators could undermine his green credentials at the worst possible time. In a Senate balanced on a knife's edge between Democrats and Republicans, Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema have found their moment. They may share the moderate lane of the party, the centre ground of US politics, but beyond that the two could hardly be more different. The rugged 74-year-old man from the mountains of West Virginia and the 45-year-old iconoclastic woman from the deserts of Arizona. bOne enjoys

extended chats with political reporters and hosts parties for fellow senators on his houseboat. The other barely speaks to the press and flies back to her home state at the slightest opportunity. But for all their differences, they are united in opposing parts of Joe Biden's ambitious climate programme - with its ultimate goal of reducing US greenhouse gas emissions to half of 2005 levels.

Actor Alec Baldwin accidentally shot dead cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounded a director on the set of the Western film Rust. "All options are on the table," District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies said of any potential charges. "No one has been ruled out at this point." Investigators also said there was "some complacency" around safety on the set. Presenting the department's initial findings, Sante Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said: "We suspect there were other live rounds found on set."

India is concerned about Wikileaks: situation in Afghanistan, US begins legal appeal to extradite Assange says Pentagon HiIndia Newsdesk

There is a tremendous convergence between US and Indian national interests right now, said Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Colin H Kahl. India is concerned about the current situation in Afghanistan, a top Pentagon official has told US lawmakers in Washington. “As I’m sure you’re aware, they (Indians) are concerned about the situation in Afghanistan. They’re concerned about the intersection between instability there and their counterterrorism concerns,” Colin H Kahl, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee during a hearing on Afghanistan, South and Central Asia Security. “They (Indians) want to work with us on those issues, sharing intelligence, cooperating where we can,” he said, adding that there is a tremendous convergence between US and Indian national interests right now. “It provides a lot of opportunity for us to cooperate with India, not just on Afghanistan and counterterrorism, but on broader regional security questions, in the Indian Ocean and as it relates to the broader Indo-Pacific,” Kahl said. He was responding to a question from Senator Gary Peters. “India’s policies towards Afghanistan have been conceived largely through the lens of competition and proxy conflict with Pakistan. So it stands to reason that New Delhi should be no less concerned about the possibility that a Taliban government could benefit anti-Indian terrorist groups, especially those oriented towards Kashmir,” he said.

Lawyers for the US have told the High Court the judge who blocked Julian Assange's extradition was misled by his psychiatrist. The United States government is starting a legal appeal to try to get the Wikileaks founder extradited. In January, a court ruled Mr Assange could not be extradited to the US due to concerns over his mental health. Mr Assange is wanted over the publication of thousands of classified documents in 2010 and 2011. The documents revealed how the US military had killed hundreds of civilians in unreported incidents during the war in Afghanistan, while leaked Iraq war files showed the 66,000 civilians had been killed and prisoners tortured by Iraqi forces. The US says the leaks broke the law and endangered lives, but Mr Assange says the case is politically motivated. His lawyer told the court that the risk of suicide would be "imminent the moment extradition becomes likely". n January, the district judge overseeing the US's extradition appeal, Vanessa Baraitser, said Mr Assange's publication of classified military and government documents arguably amounted to a crime. But he could not be transferred to the US because he was unwell and could take his own life.

IS to hit America in six months: US intelligence HiIndia Newsdesk

The US intelligence community has assessed that the Islamic State in Afghanistan could have the capability to attack the US in as little as six months, and has the intention to do so, a senior Pentagon official told Congress on Tuesday. The remarks by Colin Kahl, under secretary of defence for policy, are the latest reminder that Afghanistan could still pose serious national security concerns for the US even after it ended its two-decade-old war in defeat in August. The Taliban, which won the war, are enemies of the IS and have seen its attempts to impose law and order after the US pullout thwarted by suicide bombings and other The remarks are the latest reminder that attacks claimed by the IS. Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak

After 18 months of the pandemic and three lockdowns, the British economy is in much better shape than had been expected, the chancellor Rishi Sunak told the Commons on Wednesday while presenting his much anticipated autumn budget. Referring to new immigration policies,

he said the “scale-up visa system” would make it quicker and easier for fast-growing businesses to bring in highly-skilled individuals. It would help “identify, attract and relocate the best global talent in key science and tech sectors” — “all part of our plan to make our visa system for international talent the most competitive in the world”. Most of the Tory front bench, including the Prime Minister Boris Johnson, wore masks. On the Opposition benches, the Labour leader Keir Starmer was missing — he has Covid.

The company is expected to fully exit the investment in the strife-torn south Asian nation between March and June next year, it said.

The top US general has said China's suspected hypersonic missile test is close to a Sputnik moment, referring to the Soviet satellite launch that sparked the Cold War arms race. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley said in an interview with Bloomberg News that the Chinese military is "expanding rapidly". The Financial Times reported this month that the test stunned the US military. Beijing denies any missile test, saying instead it was a spacecraft. "What we saw was a very significant event of a test of a hypersonic weapon system. And it is very concerning," Gen Milley told Bloomberg on Wednesday. "I don't know if it's quite a Sputnik moment, but I think it's very close to that. It has all of our attention."

Saudi Arabia has agreed to provide $3 billion to cash-strapped Pakistan in safe deposits and $1.2 billion and $1.5 billion worth of oil supplies on deferred payments, media reports said on Wednesday. A formal announcement about the agreement, reached during Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit to the kingdom this week, would be made by Prime Minister’s adviser on finance and revenue Shaukat Tarin and Energy Minister Hammad Azhar, Dawn newspaper reported. Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry took to Twitter to announce the aid provided by the Saudi Arabia government.

Tanden, 51, a senior adviser to President Biden was named White House staff secretary on a morning staff call on Friday, the CNN reports Washington: Indian-American policy expert Neera Tanden, a close confidant of US President Joe Biden, has been named White House staff secretary, eight months after Republican lawmakers scuttled her nomination to another key post. Tanden, 51, a senior adviser to President Biden was named White House staff secretary on a morning staff call on Friday, the CNN reported. The White House staff secretary is a behind-the-scenes but critical role in the West Wing, responsible for managing paper flow to the President from other areas of the administration and federal government. The person filling the job has been viewed as one of the most powerful in the building, it said. In addition to her new duties, Tanden will keep her senior adviser title "and will continue to provide leadership on particular projects and initiatives," Politico reported, quoting a White House official. She will report to White House chief of staff Ron Klain, it said. The appointment does not require Senate confirmation. "The Staff Secretary role is the central nervous system of the White House and moves the decision-making process and manages a wide variety of issues for the President," the White House official said. Tanden has "over two decades of experience in policy and management which are critical elements of the role. Her experience across domestic, economic and national security policy will be a key asset in this new role," the official said. Tanden's appointment as White House staff secretary came eight months after she withdrew her nomination as Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget due to stiff opposition from Republican senators.

She immigrated to the US from India in 1958 at the age of 19 to study nutrition and endocrinology at the University of California. It’s there she met Harris’s father Donald Harris, an African-American from British Jamaica. In the book, published by Harper Collins India, Rajghatta writes that Donald spent time at the Delhi School of Economics on a fellowship when Harris was a toddler. The book begins as a profile of Harris’ mother, partly out of personal interest of Rajghatta, whose father came to the US around the same time as Shyamala Gopalan and studied agriculture and dairy science at Kansas State.

Two Indian American-led companies made Forbes magazine’s annual list of 25 venturebacked startups that are most likely to become unicorns, with valuations of more than $1 billion. This year’s list featured Legion Technologies, founded by Sanish Mondkar; and Alchemy, cofounded by Nikil Viswanathan and Joseph Lau. “A $1 billion valuation isn’t what it used to be, as companies reach that milestone at breakneck speed, noted Forbes, adding that even startups with barely any revenue are earning sky-high valuations as investors bet on future growth. The average estimated 2020 revenue for companies on this year’s list is just $12 million; last year’s list featured startups with an average of $30 million in revenue. “Still there are plenty of up-and-comers worth keeping an eye on, including one that tests your dog’s DNA and another that will help you notarize documents from the comfort of your home. He also pointed out that Aryan was found in ‘conscious possession’ of contraband. “There is a case that a person might not have consumed the drug, but if he’s in possession of it, he can be booked under NDPS Act… Accused Aryan was found in conscious possession of contraband,” Singh argued.

“Celebrating Pak Win Is Sedition”: 3 J&K Students Arrested In Agra HiIndia Newsdesk

Indian American Rashad Hussain has been nominated for the post of Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom (IRF). The Senate Foreign Relations Committee held a virtual confirmation hearing for Hussain. Several other Biden administration nominees were being heard during the same session. If confirmed, Hussain would be the first Indian American as well as first Muslim to head the State Department’s office of IRF. 42-year-old Rashad Hussain hails from Bihar in India. During his hearing he committed to increase efforts to hold China accountable for its oppression of Uighurs, saying the country was one of the worst abusers of religious freedom. He said, “I have visited Xinjiang province and I have seen first hand China’s blatant disregard for the Uighur community, their oppression via the genocide that’s occurring there and for their disregard of human rights towards a number of religious communities, including the Tibetan Buddhist Protestants, Catholics and Falun Gong.” Hussain served as the US’s Special Envoy to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) during the Obama administration.

The arrested students are engineering students at the Raja Balwant Singh College in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Agra: Three Kashmiri students were arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra yesterday for allegedly celebrating Pakistan’s win over India in the ongoing T20 World Cup. Those celebrating Pakistan’s win will be charged with sedition, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s office tweeted this morning. All three are engineering students at the Raja

Balwant Singh College in Agra. Arsheed Yousuf and Inayat Altaf Sheikh are in their third year of college, and Showkat Ahmed Ganai is in his fourth. They have been charged with promoting enmity between groups on grounds of religion, and cyberterrorism. They may also face sedition charges, indicated a tweet from the Chief Minister’s office.

The Supreme Court said a “vague denial from the government” is not sufficient. New Delhi: Allegations that Israeli-made Pegasus software was used to snoop on journalists, activists and politicians in India are about the violation of fundamental rights and “could have a chilling effect”, the Supreme Court said today, setting up an inquiry headed by a retired judge. A “vague denial from the government is not sufficient”, the Supreme Court said sharply, asserting that the government could not give any clarity despite being given “ample opportunity” to do so. There had been no specific denial by the Centre, it said. The court also commented on the government’s statements on lawful interception for national security purposes. The state cannot get a free pass every time national security is raised, the Supreme Court said. Retired Supreme Court Justice RV Ravindran will head the inquiry and an IPS officer will assist him, along with officials from the National Forensic University. Facebook to take action against hate speech in India HiIndia Newsdesk

Washington, DC based advocacy organization, Indian American Muslim C o u n c i l ( IA M C ) h a s called on Facebook to take immediate action against the increasing hate speech in India. Rasheed Ahmed, Executive Editor of IAMC, said: “Fa c e b o ok’s c ont i nu e d dereliction of duty in the face of mounting evidence of how its platform is enabling violence and genocide, is an alarm bell for all who care about human rights and democracy. As Facebook has failed to clean house despite multiple exposes, it is time for regulators to step in.” Recently, whistleblower Frances Haugen, who was a former Facebook product manager, had made a shocking expose about Facebook’s failure to curb hate speech which had led to violence against vulnerable populations in many countries including India. On Facebook groups and on WhatsApp fake news, propaganda videos, violent images and hateful rhetoric are freely available with no pushback. With approximately 340 million users, India remains Facebook’s largest market, yet the company allocates only scant resources towards monitoring hate speech which is India-specific. According to Haugen, Indian Facebook is awash with dehumanizing posts about the minorities.

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing of Aryan Khan’s bail application in connection with the cruise ship drug bust case for Wednesday. Senior advocate and former Attorney General for India Mukul Rohatgi represented Aryan Khan, son of Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, in his bail plea before Bombay HC. Aryan had moved the High Court after both Magistrate and Sessions courts rejected his plea. Rohatgi has so far argued that no drug recovery has been made from Aryan Khan, and no medical test has shown that he consumed drugs. “There was no occasion to arrest my client (Aryan Khan),” Rohatgi told HC. He further said that the WhatsApp chats recovered by NCB were not related to the cruise. He has also said that Aryan has nothing to do with the controversy around the NCB’s Sameer Wankhede and the allegations against the latter by NCP’s Nawak Malik and a witness in the cruise case, Prabhakar Sail. The former Attorney General also said that it was a fit case for bail and handed over an article appeared in The Indian Express referring to remarks by Social Justice ministry on reformation in drugs consumption. He added that this is an important case for media because of Aryan’s parents. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Tuesday filed an affidavit opposing the bail plea of Aryan Khan, arrested after a seizure of drugs on a cruise ship following a raid by the agency on October 2.

Zia Mustafa was arrested in 2003 for Nadimarg massacre. Police say he was killed in a crossfire while ‘leading security forces to Pakistani terrorists hiding in forested areas of Poonch’. From 8 November, foreigners have to show negative coronavirus test report before boarding a flight to the US. However, those under 18 are exempted from the vaccination requirement. Washington: The US will lift all restrictions for fully vaccinated international travellers, including from India, from November 8 but they will have to show proof of a negative coronavirus test before boarding a flight to the country, the White House has announced. The updated travel guidelines issued on Monday also include new protocols around testing. To further strengthen protections, unvaccinated travellers – whether US Citizens, lawful permanent residents (LPRs), or the small number of accepted unvaccinated foreign nationals – will now need to test within one day of departure.

New Delhi: Zia Mustafa, the Lashkare-Taiba “operative” who was killed during an encounter with militants in Poonch Sunday, was a “crucial link” and could have “helped conclude the ongoing operation” to identify hideouts of terrorists, sources in the security establishment said. According to sources in the J&K Police, Mustafa, who was accused of killing 24 Kashmiri Pandits in Pulwama’s Nadimarg in 2003 and had been in prison for the last 18 years, was in “constant touch with Lashkar handlers in Pakistan and was also guiding infiltrators hiding in Poonch, using a phone”.

Deepavali 2021 D

Diwali's date is determined by the India calendar and changes every year, ranging from October to November. It is observed on the 15th day of the 8th month (the month of Kartik) in India's calendar. The day is an Amavasya or 'new moon day'. Amavasya Tithi (the period when the moon opposes the sun's light by up to 12°) is from 6:03am on November 4 to 2:44am on November 5 in 2021. The Goddess Lakshmi (the god of wealth) is mainly worshiped during Diwali Puja for happiness, prosperity, and fame. For Diwali 2021 in Delhi, the Lakshmi Puja Muhurat (best time to worship Lakshmi) is the 1 hour 55 minutes from 6:09pm to 8:04pm on November 4. Diwali is derived from Sanskrit word Deepavali meaning 'Line of Lamps'. It is one of the most important festivals in India, marking a new year, and often compared to Christmas in the West.

iwali celebrations take place over 5 days with each day typically having different rituals and traditions. Below we have listed all the days of Diwali along with their calendar dates and a short description of what happens on each day:

Day 1 — Dhanteras: November 2, 2021 (Tuesday) Dwadashi This is the first day of the festival when people clean their homes and prepare for the events ahead. This is also a busy shopping day, when it is considered lucky to go to markets and buy gold or new kitchen items.

the goddess Lakshmi are performed. The most auspicious time for worship (Puja) is from 6:09pm to 8:04pm. The worshipping can be done at temples or at home by placing a red cloth on the puja chowki ('worship table'), putting the idol on it, and then offering flowers, fruits (water chestnuts, pomegranate, quince, and coconut) and sweets (notably kesari bhaat — semolina pudding with saffron, nuts, and sugar) to Goddess Lakshmi, then prostrating in front of the idol and joining your palms for prayers. On the day of Diwali, families get together to exchange gifts and have a large meal. Many people wear their nicest clothes on this day and say "Happy Diwali" to each other.

Many families will put up string lights and start creating their rangoli, which are intricate designs placed on the floors of homes. Check more details about Diwali traditional decorations here.

Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan set to launch his khadi-based fashiona label ‘House of Khaddar’ in Chicago hiINDiA SPECIAL REPORT

By Mayank Chhaya

M

ohandas Gandhi, the original proponent of the fabric, once said, khadi is not fashion it is a value. Tamil movie superstar Kamal Haasan, who is also someone with an unbridled passion for all things Gandhi, would seem to disagree in nuance because he believes precisely khadi is a value it also ought to be fashion.

As the 66-year-old actor, now in his 62nd year as an artist, prepares to launch his own khadi-based fashion line called House of Khaddar, he thinks it is more than time for this versatile all-weather fabric to be projected around the world through his fashion line and with it carry the story of Gandhi’s values. The artist whose name means a smiling lotus, as in Kamal for lotus and Haasan for smile, plans to launch ‘House of Khaddar’ out of Chicago soon. He is also launching a fragrance along with it. “I was born under Khadi, literally on khadi

in the sense that my father held me in his lap for the first time and he never wore anything but khadi till he died. He was a great Gandhi admirer,” Haasan said in an interview as part of the upcoming launch. Saying that “the idea of khadi was always with me” Haasan said his commitment to Gandhi and his values came from his father. Asked whether he was trying to bring about an awareness among the younger generation how intrinsic Khadi was to India’s freedom movement before 1947, Haasan said, “My intention is to say that we made history, now we will do business. That is what Britain was doing with calico, with our cotton or Egyptian cotton. Cotton has a great history of so many unjust and just things that happened. There were slaves created because of cotton. I was born to a history where freedom was created because of cotton. The civil disobedience movement also had the khadi thread running through the weave. Gandhi is the biggest weaver I have known in my life.”

It was a measure of Haasan’s devotion to Gandhi that he even said, “All my metaphors I learned from Mr. Gandhi and my father. Our tagline is ‘Fashion is being civil yet disobedient’.” Asked who wrote that tagline, he said “I did. I am an understudy of Mr. Gandhi.” He added that he wished he had Gandhi to write all his copy because he regarded him as the greatest Indian writer. On why global fashion labels never chose khadi as a fabric despite its obvious versatility, Haasan said he was thankful that they did not since it left the field open for him to explore. Gandhi first introduced the idea of Khadi in 1918 as a way to help the impoverished Indians by giving them a means to earn a livelihood. Writing about Gandhi and khadi for mkgandhi. org, Divya Joshi says in her introduction, “But one finds a change in his emphasis from 1934, more especially from 1935, when he began on insisting on khadi for the villager’s own use, rather than merely for sale to others. His imprisonment in 1942 and 1943 gave him time to

After early success Kamal Haasan stayed away from Hindi cinema because of its underworld connections

T

his year marks the 40th anniversary of Kamal Haasan’s first Hindi movie ‘Ek Duje Ke Liye’ which was a remake of his own Telugu film ‘Maro Charitra’. Haasan, then 26, was paired with Rati Agnihotri.

The film’s story was about a fraught romance between S. Vasudevan or Vasu, played by Haasan, and Sapna, played by Agnihotri. That Vasu belong to a south Indian family and Sapna, a north Indian one, set the stage for cultural and linguistic tensions between their families. Directed by K. Balachander, the film was a smash hit aided by wonderful songs composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. Haasan’s debut in Hindi cinema could not have gone better except that it did not. Despite the movie’s success followed by some other hit films such as Ramesh Sippy’s ‘Saagar’ (1985) featuring him in a love triangle with Dimple Kapdia and Rishi Kapoor Haasan remained at best a hesitant presence in Hindi cinema. During this interview we asked him why he chose to stay away from Hindi cinema even though he could have made a huge career out of it. His answer was rather damning of the way Hindi cinema reputedly functioned through the decades of the 1980s and 1990s and even early 2000s. “It is easy to talk about it now because it is in hindsight. That’s because I never considered cinema to be a part of the underworld,” he said with remarkable candor. Hindi cinema’s underworld connections, often coerced by the underworld gangsters looking to wash their ill-gotten wealth as well as to satisfy their craving for glamor, have been well-documented. Even today, there are occasional reports of the underworld extorting money from movie stars and producers who often have no options but

to oblige. “I thought this is art and it should operate independent of kings, the underworld and other influences,” Haasan told Hi India. “I did not want to be that. That is one of the reasons why I played perhaps ‘Nayakan’,” he said. His reference to ‘Nayakan’ was the 1987 Tamil film inspired by the life of Varadrajan Mudaliar, an alleged Mumbai underworld don who dispensed favors for a fee running a sort of parallel justice network. “Not to say anything about Varadrajan Mudaliar, he had nothing to do with films. I am talking about what did exist in Bombay. I don’t know how subcutaneous it is now but I would like to keep away from it. I am an artist and now I am a politician. So I frown upon those that will exploit my people,” he said. “I have armed myself with the will of the people. I am a politician. I am coming back,” he said. With the corporatization of Hindi cinema and its status as an industry there has been a discernible decline in the influence of the underworld, but it has not gone away since it always hovers around the periphery.

remarkable about Khadi: “I have only one message to give and that concerns khadi. Place khadi in my hands and I shall place swaraj in yours. The uplift of the Antyajas is also covered by khadi and even HinduMuslim unity will live through it. It is also a great instrument of peace. This does not mean that I do not favour boycott of Councils and law-courts, but in order that people may not have a grievance against those who go to them, I desire that the people should carry on work concerning khadi even with the help of lawyers and members of legislatures. Keep the Moderates highly pleased, cultivate love and friendship for them. Once they become fearless, that very moment they will become one with us. The same holds good also for Englishmen.”

created by khadi comes from Gandhi’s powerful economic logic behind its creation in defiance to the British cloth against textiles manufactured in Manchester in England in those days. Gandhi organized a movement to set foreign clothes on fire. Thousands of bonfires were lighted across the country. After India’s independence khadi did enjoy some measure of success but soon enough the advent of Lycra and polyester forced into a corner where only Indian politicians, particularly those belonging to the Indian National Congress Party wore it as a kind of unspoken uniform. Ironically, it was in Ahmedabad, which was the nerve center of Gandhi’s historic political struggle, that saw the rise of polyester yarn produced by the late industrialist Dhirubhai Ambani

C

hicago entrepreneur Nik Patel’s journey from earning minimum wages as a 17-year-old in the 1980s to now has been one of free-wheeling zeal and drive. Although he began as a worker keeping a 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. shift at the start of his career in America, he knew quickly that that was not going to be his life.

Now having joined hands with the Tamil movie superstar Kamal Haasan to launch a line of fragrance in Chicago on November 15, Patel can look back at a journey that took him from writing a script that was accepted by India’s Doordarshan television to opening a chain of video stores in and beyond Chicago and eventually to tanning stores with great satisfaction. Given his passion he built up his first business Video Vision into a formidable hub for Hindi and other Indian movies. Even while he was doing that he recognized that he could make a bigger impact by entering the American movie market. That led him to set up his own Lion Video which went on to become the 17th largest video chain of its kind out of 5000 other

ponder further over his khadi movement, and when he came out of jail he came with a determination to give a new turn to khadi work in order to make khadi serve the needs of villagers themselves first and foremost. He poured out his soul to his fellow-workers in 1944, and urged them to effect the change.” It is a measure of Gandhi’s steadfast commitment to the handwoven fabric that he wrote in the Navjivan newspaper on April 5, 1922, “Like swaraj, khadi is our birth-right, and it is our life-long duty to use that only. Anyone who does not fulfil that duty is totally ignorant of what swaraj is.”In the same newspaper, he wrote on December 12, 1922, “We cannot claim to have understood the meaning of swaraj till khadi becomes as universal as currency.” In an interview published in Navjivan on March 19, 1922, Gandhi said something even more

Gandhi’s emphasis on khadi was also a part of his broader political doctrine. “Ever since the commencement of our present struggle, we have been feeling the necessity of boycotting foreign cloth. I venture to suggest that, when khaddar comes universally in use, the boycott of foreign cloth will automatically follow. Speaking for myself, charkha and khaddar have a special religious significance to me because they are a symbol of kinship between the members of both the communities and the hunger- and disease- stricken poor. It is by virtue of the fact that our movement can today be described as moral and economic as well as political,” he said in a letter he wrote from the Sabarmati jail on December 12, 1922 to a certain Abdul Bari. Haasan’s reference to freedom being

under his Vimal brand. One of the main reasons why khadi lost out was because of its difficult maintenance and often high cost in contrast to the massproduced polyester notwithstanding that the latter was a highly uncomfortable fabric in the country’s heat.Although there have been efforts earlier by some Indian designers between 2000 and 2002 to introduce a khadibased fashion line, their success remains questionable. Kamal Haasan’s launch of ‘House of Khaddar’ some two decades hence and almost a century after those pronouncements by Gandhi may be fortuitous but given his superstardom there are expectations that khadi just might cross from being a coarse and lowly fabric to the level couture.

NEED A KIDNEY DONOR My husband is suffering from kidney disease for last three years and requires dialysis treatment three times a week to keep his body in balance and functional. He is on a national registry for kidney donation. There is a long waiting list for the kidney, and he desperately needs a living kidney to save his life. The donor should be non-diabetic and under the age of 63. My daughters and I tried to donate but unfortunately our kidneys are not acceptable. I earnestly request and grateful to whoever can come forward to donate a living kidney.

Kashmera said, 'If he fires his current manager and gets a good manager who actually wants him to get good work, then things can happen. Jo abhi unka kam dekh raha hai is very bad. Govinda ji is a very talented actor and he should not be sitting at home.'

Ranveer Singh reveals he has kept a fast on Karwa Chauth for Deepika

Audience is unforgiving today, you have to constantly excite them Rajkummar Rao

"The audience is unforgiving today. We live in a digital world, everybody has a point of view, a right to say what they feel like saying about a film. Earlier, we never got to know what they were feeling. "So we really have to constantly come up with something new and exciting for them to (be able to) invest their time. I am consciously trying to do different kinds of films, genres and working with exciting makers," Rao told PTI in an interview. The 37-year-old actor, who will next be seen in the Dinesh Vijan-backed comedy "Hum Do Hamare Do", said even his upcoming line-up of projects is a reflection of the diversity he is aiming for in his career. Post "Hum Do Hamare Do", scheduled to be released on Disney+ Hotstar on October 29, Rao's forthcoming films include "Badhaai Do", Netflix Original "Monica, O My Darling", thriller "Hit: The First Case" and filmmaker Anubhav Sinha's recently announced "Bheed".

Actors Ranveer Singh will celebrate Karwa Chauth on his new show The Big Picture. In a promo, Ranveer reveals that he is fasting for Deepika Padukone and applies henna too on his hand. The episode promises to be an emotional affair. In the video, henna is applied to Ranveer’s hand, just the letter ‘D’. Ranveer shows his hand to the audience, and blows a kiss to it, with the song “Aayat” playing in the background. The song is from Ranveer and Deepika’s film Bajirao Mastani. . “I would want a lovely house where my wife, my kids and my family are around. They are playing around joyfully. Everyone is happy and healthy. I don’t know what else to ask other than that I am able to entertain till my last day. This is my life’s big picture,” he said.

Theatres vs OTT?

With cinema halls opening doors again, Blind director Ghosh says he is rethinking release of film that was to mark Sonam’s web debut

“We will decide [the further course of action] next month. At the end of the day, we all make movies for the big screen, right? That’s a high for a filmmaker. We have been thinking about [going ahead with] a theatrical release, but one doesn’t always get what they want. Suddenly, there is a plethora of films coming in. Shelf space is an issue. There is a list of movies lined up for release. Now, who has the income to watch four films a week? Many have been unemployed in the past year, and watching movies at a multiplex with the family can be an expensive [affair].” Directed by Shome Makhija, Blind revolves around a visually impaired police cadet (played by Kapoor), who uses her senses to find a killer. The action-thriller, also featuring Vinay Pathak, Purab Kohli and Lillete Dubey, was shot in a start-to-finish schedule from December 2020, in Glasgow, Scotland. It was wrapped up in February this year. Talking about collaborating with Kapoor,

The actor, who has led several acclaimed projects in the last decade, including "Shahid", "Bareilly Ki Barfi", "Newton" and "Stree", said he is consciously trying to experiment with different genres so as to not come across as stagnant.

One Mic Stand Season 2 brings together celebrities from different walks of life to show their comic side. This season boasts off names like Karan Johar, Sunny Leone, Chetan Bhagat, and Raftaar. And Johar has opened up on being a part of the show

alking about the same, the filmmaker shared, “Comedy is one of the most loved genres on streaming sites so naturally when I got a call to do One Mic Stand 2 I had to say yes. You know I’m always a sport when it comes to taking a joke and I finally got the opportunity to do that myself. I wanted to take up this challenge because I have been in front of the camera several times but this show is not even remotely close to what I have done in the past. I was especially attracted to the format of the show, which is perfect because I got a chance to connect with the audience more candidly. I think it’s beautiful to get artists from completely different worlds and immerse themselves in comedy while collaborating with a pro comic that shares the

same like mindedness and individuality. This is what resonates with the audiences making this show a complete hit.” Karan Johar went on to open up on her mentor Sumukhi, and appreciated her natural skills. He added, "Sumukhi was such a blast to work with, her humor is always so well timed. She understood my voice and guided me in writing a set that fit me like a glove, working with strong female voices is always enthralling, we connected on our common love for creating content."

We estimate that 125 kilograms of gold would be required to plate the Vimana Gopuram,” informed G. Kishen Rao of Yadadri Temple Development Authority. “We will start the work as an initial layer of copper has to be fixed to the gopuram before work on gold plating can begin,” said Mr. Rao. The Vimana Gopuram of the temple soars to a height of 47-feet and would be visible for miles around, including the trains passing on the Bhongir-Secunderabad route. From holy men to industrialists, politicians, and corporate houses, donating of gold donations have continued after public announcements and social media posts after Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao unveiled the plan on October 19. The Chief Minister pledged 1.16 kg of gold on his family’s behalf, adding that people living in every corner of the State will get an opportunity to donate money for buying gold for the temple.

The wall is shaped like a battlement, says CEO of Aga Khan Trust for Culture

Conservation architects at the Qutb Shahi Tombs complex have uncovered an old battlement wall that enclosed the tombs of Hayat Bakshi Begum and her husband Sultan Qutb Shah. “It was covered with a layer of concrete but when we chipped away, we discovered the wall which is shaped like a battlement,” informed Ratish Nanda, CEO of Aga Khan Trust for Culture, which is carrying out work for Department of Archaeology and Museums, Telangana. “We will strengthen it so that it lasts for a long time and people get to see the architectural style of the Qutb Shahis,” said Mr. Nanda. This is the second time when a walled enclosure has been discovered at the Qutb Shahi Tombs complex. A few years earlier, architects working on the site discovered that the tomb of the founder of the dynasty Sultan Quli was in the centre of a square garden enclosure. The discovery of an enclosing wall is not a surprise as walled gardens are the definition of paradise in Old Persian.

Naidu said “state-sponsored” terror has reached “unimaginable heights” in Andhra Pradesh, threatening democracy, institutions and very fabric of the state. TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday arrived in Delhi and met President Ram Nath Kovind to demand imposition of President’s rule in the state. Naidu will meet Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday, and is expected to raise issue apart from other matters. During his meeting with the President, Naidu said “state-sponsored” terror has reached “unimaginable heights” in Andhra Pradesh, threatening democracy, institutions and very fabric of the state. He also handed over to the President a 323-page document prepared by the party titled “state-sponsored terror in AP”.

The by-election is being seen as a litmus test for Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who took charge barely three months ago, since the constituency falls in his home district Haveri. “I HAVE never seen such a fierce battle where state leaders of all parties and the Chief Minister are campaigning intensively for so many days,” says 80-year-old Krishnappa Talwar of Akki Alur village in Hanagal constituency, where a crucial by-election is slated on October 30. The by-election is being seen as a litmus test for Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who took charge barely three months ago, since the constituency falls in his home district Haveri. The results are also expected to have a bearing on Bommai’s standing as a BJP leader who will lead the party into the 2023 assembly elections. Hanagal, a taluk located 38 km from the district headquarters at Haveri, is equidistant from Shiggaon, which B ommai represents.

The bypoll in Hanagal was necessitated by the death of six-time MLA C M Udasi, 85, who was with the BJP in his final years, in June this year. Incidentally, this is the first time in 43 years that the name of C M Udasi is missing from the Hanagal poll fray. During the campaigning, the BJP has been trying to create a narrative that projects Chief Minister Bommai as the son-in-law of Hanagal constituency and son of Haveri district. Haveri BJP MP Shivakumar Udasi, son of C M Udasi, has also joined the campaign to draw votes of the Udasi family loyalists to the party. The BJP has fielded its Haveri district president Shivaraj Sajjanar – in a firstever break from the Udasi family – as its candidate.

The Karnataka government has ord e re d to p e r for m ‘G au - P uj a’ (worship of cows) at all temples that come under the Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions And Charitable Endowments Department on the occasion of Deepavali on November 5. The order directs all temples under the Endowments Department to conduct cow worship at temples on ‘Balipaadyami’ between 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm, which falls in the auspicious time of ‘godhooli lagna’, according to the Hindu calendar. According to the order, during the festival of Deepavali every year, the temple authorities should get the cows bathed, decorate them with flowers and revere them as per Hindu traditions and offer them bananas, jaggery, sweets and other dishes and conduct puja. “It is a decision taken to carry forward the ancient Hindu tradition according to sacred texts of the religion and ‘sanatana dharma’,” the order stated.

State Holding Australian Open Says No To Unvaccinated Players HiIndia Newsdesk

Hundreds Of Sports Allowed, Taliban Promise -- If You're A Man From swimming to soccer, running to horse riding, Afghanistan's new sports chief said Tuesday that the Taliban will allow 400 sports -- but declined to confirm if women can play a single one. "Please don't ask more questions about women," Bashir Ahmad Rustamzai told AFP, from an armchair where Afghanistan's Olympic Committee president had sat until he fled the country last month. Rustamzai, a heavily-built former kung fu and wrestling champion with a bushy black and white beard, was appointed by the hardline Islamist group to be Afghanistan's director general for sports and physical education. Once the wrestling federation chief when the Taliban were last in power, Rustamzai then worked with the Western-backed government, before falling out with them because of "their widespread corruption," he said.

Unvaccinated players will not get special dispensation for the Australian Open, the top official in the state holding the Grand Slam said Wednesday, potentially ruling out reigning men's champion Novak Djokovic. A leaked email earlier this week suggested that players who were not inoculated against the coronavirus would be able to take part as long as they completed 14 days' quarantine. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison then said that unvaccinated players would be permitted to enter the country if they received an exemption, which the host state Victoria would need to apply for on behalf of players.

Malkhan Singh's gang moves to the outskirts of a village that was declared a safe haven for surrender

Singh himself, according to reports, had a reward of 70,000 rupees for his capture. Translated at today's rate, the reward was just over $900, but in the day it was worth almost $8,000 and a pretty big sum. The government also started sending out feelers to him to give up arms. In the blistering summer of 1982, Panjiar and his colleagues Kalyan Mukherjee and Brijraj Singh found themselves at the centre of negotiations between the Congress-led government of Madhya Pradesh and Singh's gang for the latter's surrender. They developed a contact to meet Singh. "I got to spend a few days with the gang. I was happy to be a 'hostage' - their guarantee against betrayal - as long as I was getting my pictures," Panjiar says.

In the early 1980s, Indian photographer Prashant Panjiar trekked across the arid badlands of central India, chronicling the lives of the country's fabled bandits. Most of the bandits lived and operated from Madhya Pradesh state's Chambal region, which Pulitzer Prizewinning writer Paul Salopek described as a "no-go zone of lumpy hills and silty rivers infested with thugs, robbers, murderers, gangsters - with infamous highwaymen called dacoits." After months of trying, Panjiar and two fellow journalists managed to meet Malkhan Singh, popularly known as India's "bandit king", in Chambal in May 1982. Malkhan Singh met government officials before his surrender Bandits were also operating with impunity in the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh: a year ago, Phoolan Devi, a female bandit, had risen to notoriety The surrender finally happened in front of tens of thousands of people in June. Walk Barefooted

Take Morning Sunlight

Walking barefooted is a natural therapy for all kinds of foot problems. It improves body balance, awareness and strength. Walking barefooted also strengthens your hips, knees and lower back region.

Morning sunlight is a great source of vitamin D. This vitamin improves bone health, supports metabolism, prevents skin diseases and is also associated with the release of serotonin for good mental health.

Everything You Never Wanted to Know About

Artificial Sweeteners

Your diet soda might just be worse than a regular one.

There are a lot of myths about artificial sweeteners. The main one is that they’re actually better for you than regular sugar. Low-calorie sweeteners have been around for decades now, and we’re finally at a point where we’ve studied them enough to understand roughly how they work and what effect they have on our bodies. A study presented at the 2018 Experimental Biology meeting has reraised all these issues and also re-confirmed what researchers have been

thinking for years: artificial sweeteners might actually cause obesity, not prevent it. We'll get more into that issue in a moment, but first let's back up a bit because despite how long we’ve had diet versions of our favorite soft drinks, plenty of people still aren’t clear on the facts. Misunderstandings left over from the early days are still widespread.

Erm … is that whole cancer thing true? A 2007 study got a bunch of rats hooked on cocaine and saccharin, then given a choice—cocaine or fake sugar?—most chose the sugar substitute. They were so addicted to saccharin that the researchers wrote they couldn’t give the rats enough cocaine to overcome their desire for a hit of sweetness. The same was true for real sugar. That’s a powerful addiction, and it shouldn’t be underestimated. You can absolutely quit sugar, real or fake, just like people can absolutely quit cocaine. You just need to take it seriously as an addiction. Don’t think it’ll be easy.

773.526.8353 MIDWEST / EASTCOAST

Let’s get this one out of the way. While it is true that some rodent studies found increased rates of certain kinds of cancer, like leukemia, after eating artificial sweeteners, subsequent testing has shown that you don’t need to worry about getting cancer from your diet soda. You’d have to regularly consume astronomical doses of the stuff. On the other hand, we do know that obesity is a major risk factor for many kinds of cancer, so maybe focus on that instead of sucralose.

So I should pick diet soda over regular to lose weight then, right? We hate to be that guy, but “well, actually …” a lot of the evidence suggests you’d be better off just trying to cut back on the regular soda. It does seem like having fewer calories should help you lose weight, but studies indicate that weight loss isn’t as simple as calories in versus out. You can trick your tastebuds (sort of) into thinking that aspartame or saccharin is the sugar you crave, but your brain isn’t so simple. More and more evidence is piling up that suggests the diet drink trend is misguided. Or as one 2008 study on obesity and artificial sweeteners asked in its conclusion: “are [artificial sweeteners] fueling—rather than fighting—the very epidemic they were designed to block?” A few recent studies suggest that consuming fake sugar actually trains your insulin response to store more fat, not less. Basically when you consume real sugar, your tastebuds send an alert to your pancreas that says, “Hey, calories are on the way! Prepare to produce insulin!” The insulin then helps break down the sugars, which either provide immediate energy or go into fat cells for storage. If your body interprets something as sweet when there’s not really sugar on the table, though, it may end up producing that same insulin response. So that diet soda is still prompting your pancreas to store fat, even though you’re not getting to enjoy real sugar—your brain can tell the difference. Artificial sweeteners don’t trigger our reward circuits the same way, so you don’t get the satisfaction of ingesting sugar. And on top of that, constantly pumping up your insulin

response eventually leads it to malfunction. This is essentially what happens in type 2 diabetes, but can occur to a lesser— but still harmful—extent in otherwise healthy people. Eventually your pancreas starts producing too much insulin in response to all food, making you pack on the pounds. This whole theory is still being tested, but it’s in line with what we observe in people who drink diet beverages: they tend to gain weight. In observational studies you can’t tell whether that’s causative or if it’s just that overweight people tend to drink more diet soda than people at a healthy weight. One clue is that scientists observe what’s known as a dose response. The more artificial sweeteners people consume, the more weight they seem to put on. That suggests it might be the fake sugars themselves that prompt the gain in poundage, not just an association.

What if I’m just using it to bridge the gap while I quit sugar altogether? Lots of people switch to diet soda as they’re trying to lose weight, in the hope that the fake stuff will be a satisfactory substitute for real sugar. As we’ve already mentioned, it’s not actually satisfying, and what’s more you’ll probably end up handicapping yourself by trying to trick your brain. Like people who start exercising, people who drink diet beverages start thinking about how they’re now down on their calorie-count, and whether consciously or subconsciously they often compensate by eating more overall. More calories on average can end up causing more harm to your weight loss goals than the occasional candy bar would have. You’ll also probably start losing your ability to appreciate more subtle flavors. David Ludwig, a weight-loss specialist at Boston Children’s Hospital, told Harvard Health this about how our tastes can change: “Non-nutritive sweeteners are far more potent than table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup. A miniscule amount produces a sweet taste comparable to that of sugar, without comparable calories. Overstimulation of sugar receptors from frequent use of these hyper-intense sweeteners may limit tolerance for more complex tastes.” That means naturally sweet foods like peaches won’t taste nearly as good, and anything without that hint of sweetness might end up seemingly completely gross.

"I hope you find the courage to decide for yourself what is right and what is wrong. And then, please expect as much of the world around you. Try to make the world good according to your standards. It won’t be easy," he said in conclusion.

peaking at Wake Forest to the graduating Class of 2015, television host Stephen Colbert told students that they are their own professor. “No one has any idea what’s going to happen. Not even Elon Musk. That’s why he’s building those rockets. He wants a ‘Plan B’ on another world,” he said. “But whatever happens, I think it’s entirely appropriate that I’m the one talking to you right now. Because I just spent many years learning to do one thing really well. I got so comfortable with that place, that role, those responsibilities that it came to define how I saw myself. But now that part of my life is over. It’s time to say goodbye to the person we’ve become, we’ve worked so hard to perfect, and to make some crucial decisions about who we’re going to be. For me, I’ll have to figure out how to do an hour-long show every night. And you, at some point, will have to sleep. I am told the Adderall wears off eventually. Good luck,” he added in his signature funny style. “I hope you find the courage to decide for yourself what is right and what is wrong. And then, please expect as much of the world around you. Try to make the world good according to your standards. It won’t be easy,” he said in conclusion.

Simple tips of makeup removal

After a night of revelry, it is normal for people to feel lazy, but if they hit the bed without removing their makeup, it can lead to breakage and damaged skin

Kamal Haasan to launch own fashion brand? Kamal Haasan is all set to launch his own fashion brand called KH-House of Khaddar. The actor and politician announced in a tweet that he will be going to Chicago, USA, in November to launch the first collection for fall/ winter 2021. The clothing line has been designed by Amritha Ram. “Thank you all for your love and support! Here’s what you all have waiting to hear! Launching KHK this November,” she wrote on Twitter. KH-House of Khaddar is an “authentic line of Indian handloom fabric with Western silhouettes,” the design house mentioned on the social media platform. The collection, comprising casual wear as well as couture pieces for men and women, will be shipped worldwide. Kamal Haasan was quoted as saying, “What we are proud of is that we have chosen a material which made a world political statement for India. Khadi is very closely associated to our history and we take pride in it.

Dos

* Be gentle Rubbing, tugging and pulling your skin are things that are bound to happen while removing your makeup. These can damage your skin severely, even if it doesn’t show immediately. Be slow and kind to your skin to ensure everything is completely removed.

* Break down makeup with cleanser Use a cleanser to first break the makeup down. Use an oil based makeup cleanser so that while you massage your face for 10-15 seconds the makeup on your full face, including your lipstick, is removed properly. Do not forget your neck.

* End with face wash Washing your face with water is the last step while removing makeup. If possible, try to keep a hot towel on your face for a few minutes, as it will open the pores that are clogging due to the remaining dirt and makeup.

Don’ts

* Do not sleep with makeup on Ensure that you remove your makeup before going to bed. Not removing it can lead to dry and damaged skin for a while and some products might even have a bad reaction on your skin.

* Don’t rely on wipes The market is full of makeup removing wipes and most people feel they make the process easier and faster. While they do remove some amount of makeup, you cannot rely on them to remove it completely.

* Don’t forget to moisturise Some makeup removers tend to strip your skin of its natural oils and make it dry. Once you’re done, smear oodles of lip balm on your lips, use a hydrating eye cream and ensure that the rest of your face is immensely hydrated.
