pandemic of the novel coronavirus has now killed more than 1.3 million people worldwide. Over 56.8 million people across the globe have been diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the new respiratory virus, according to data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. The actual numbers are believed to be much higher due to testing shortages, many unreported cases and suspicions that some national governments are hiding or downplaying the scope of their outbreaks. The criteria for diagnosis -- through clinical means or a lab test -- has also varied from country to country. The United States is the worst-affected nation, with more than 11.7 million diagnosed cases and at least 252,514 deaths. Nearly 200 vaccine candidates for COVID-19 are being tracked by the World Health Organization, at least 10 of which are in crucial phase three studies. Of those 10 potential vaccines in late-stage trials, there are currently five that will be available in the United States if approved.

Biden wins Georgia "I Am Confident He Knows He recount as Trump Hasn't Won": Joe Biden On Trump setbacks mount Trump is behind "incredibly damaging messages being sent to the rest of the world about how democracy functions," Biden told reporters in his home state of Delaware.

HiIndia Newsdesk US President-elect Joe Biden's victory in Georgia has been confirmed by a recount, as legal efforts by Donald Trump's allies to challenge his defeat were dismissed in three states. The Democrat beat his Republican rival in Georgia by 12,284 votes, according to the audit required by state law. Mr Biden said he was confident Mr Trump knew he was not going to win and had shown "incredible irresponsibility". The Democrat is set to take office in January as the 46th US president. Mr Biden's victory margin in the public vote overall stands at more than 5.9 million. His victory in the US Electoral College system, which determines who becomes president, is projected to be 306 to 232.

US Covid toll hits 250,000

The nation needed “a uniform approach”, not a “disjointed” state-by-state, city-by-city response, said US infectious disease expert

HiIndia Newsdesk

Wilmington: US President-elect Joe Biden on Thursday accused Donald Trump of brazenly damaging democracy as the incumbent pressed on with a campaign to reverse his election loss through fraud claims and personal outreach to election authorities. Trump is behind "incredibly damaging messages being sent to the rest of the world about how democracy functions," Biden told reporters in his home state of Delaware. Asked about Trump's calls with officials in Michigan, which Biden won on November 3 election by 155,000 votes, Biden said it was

"another incident where he will go down in history as being one of the most irresponsible presidents in American history." "It's hard to fathom how this man thinks," Biden said. "I'm confident he knows he hasn't won, is not going to be able to win and we're going to be sworn in January 20th." Trump has refused to accept his loss on November 3, despite his opponent getting over six million more votes. Biden also won the Electoral College votes that ultimately decide who takes the White House by 306 to 232, flipping five states that went to Trump four years ago.

CDC urges Americans not to BDS Israel boycott group is antitravel for Thanksgiving Semitic, says US

HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk With coronavirus cases on the rise in all but one state and a newly reached American death toll of 250,000, this would not seem the moment for the US to take a patchwork response to the pandemic. But that is what it has done, and that was perhaps never clearer than this week as mayors, school board and governors struggled to fend off the onslaught. In Ohio, it was a nightly curfew. In Mississippi, it was an expanded mask mandate, and in Iowa a statewide one — the state’s first ever. In Maryland, all bars, restaurants and night clubs were ordered closed by 10pm. And in Pennsylvania, the authorities said anyone travelling to the state would needed to be tested before arrival. “The new normal is no longer sustainable,” Minnesota’s governor, Tim Walz, said on Wednesday evening as he announced sweeping new restrictions. “The ground is literally shifting under our feet.” New York City, just eight weeks after open its schoolhouse doors, said it was closing them again. Denver, too, said it would move to all-remote teaching, as did the state of Kentucky. A day after the governor of California said the state was “pulling the emergency brake” on its reopening, Los Angeles county went a step further and announced a curfew for businesses. Illinois, too, imposed new restrictions. Only in Hawaii were cases reported to be staying relatively flat. Early in the week, Dr Anthony S. Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease expert, said the nation needed “a uniform approach”, not a “disjointed” state-by-state, city-by-city response.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has told Americans to avoid travel for the Thanksgiving holiday amid soaring Covid-19 cases."In the last week, we've seen over a million new cases," said the CDC's Erin Sauber-Schatz to reporters on Thursday. "Thanksgiving is a week away." But the agency stopped short of issuing a travel ban for Americans. The US has so far recorded more than 11.6 million coronavirus infections and more than 250,000 deaths. Thanksgiving typically heralds the busiest week for travel in the US. Last year, an estimated 26 million travellers passed through the country's airports in the week surrounding the holiday. "It's not a requirement. It's a recommendation for the American public to consider," Dr Henry Walke, the CDC's Covid-19 incident manager, said during Thursday's press briefing."Right now, especially as we're seeing this sort of exponential growth in cases, and the opportunity to translocate disease or infection from one part of the country to another, it leads to our recommendation to avoid travel at this time."

Pompeo eyes history on Israel swansong trip

HiIndia Newsdesk In the dying days of Donald Trump's presidency, one of his most loyal lieutenants was determined to make history. Mike Pompeo became the first US secretary of state to visit a Jewish settlement in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, physically putting his stamp on a Trump administration policy that has embraced the expansionist vision of the Israeli right.

HiIndia Newsdesk The US has declared as anti-Semitic a prominent international movement which calls for a complete boycott of Israel over its treatment of the Palestinians. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) was "a cancer", adding the US would stop funding groups linked to it. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the move "wonderful". BDS however rejected the charge, saying it opposed "all forms of racism, including anti-Jewish racism". "The BDS movement for Palestinian freedom, justice and equality, stands with all those struggling for a more dignified, just and beautiful world," it said. "With our many partners, we shall resist these McCarthyite attempts to intimidate and bully Palestinian, Israeli and international human rights defenders into accepting Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism as fate." Formed in 2005, BDS has become prominent in many countries around the world. It calls for a total boycott of Israel, including cultural, economic and academic, over what it considers as Israeli repression of Palestinian rights. Israel has long claimed BDS opposes the country's very existence and is motivated by anti-Semitism.

Covishield is the name in India of the Covid-19 vaccine candidate developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca. Promising results about the effectiveness of the candidate in vulnerable age groups were published in The Lancet on Thursday. The candidate, which is being manufactured by SII under an agreement with OxfordAstraZeneca, is the frontrunner in India’s own race to find a vaccine to defeat the novel coronavirus.

These are some of the key measures that are being implemented by the Government with an aim to eliminate manual scavenging across the country by August 2021, according to senior officials. HiIndia Newsdesk Medical researchers have documented for the first time in India fewer new cases of the coronavirus disease in urban areas with large proportions of previously infected people, a sign of emerging populationlevel protection without a vaccine. The researchers have cautioned that their findings report an epidemiological phenomenon anticipated to occur but hitherto unrecorded with Covid-19, and should not lead to any laxity in precautions such as masks, physical distancing and avoiding crowds. Their study in Pune comparing new cases against seroprevalence — the proportion

of people with antibodies against SARSCoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19 — has found areas with the highest prevalence showing the fewest cases and areas with the least prevalence showing the highest cases. An area called Lohiyanagar-Kasewadi, for instance, with a seroprevalence level of 66 per cent reported only five cases per 1,000 people during a 45-day period after the prevalence survey. In contrast, an area called Kasba Peth-Somwar Peth with 35 per cent seroprevalence reported 20 cases per 1,000 people. “Other cities with similar large epidemics and different seroprevalence levels are likely to show similar patterns,” said Aurnab Ghose, associate professor of biology at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, a study team member. The study, posted on a preprint server but not peer-reviewed yet, has also found neutralising antibodies targeting SARSCoV-2 in 85 per cent of the people with antibodies to the virus, an indication of at least temporary protection from the virus.

It is the sixth year in a row that the state has topped the list of states with the highest number of tiger deaths in the country, they added. According to the All-India Tiger Estimation Results released last year, Madhya Pradesh had the highest number of 526 tigers, followed by 524 in Karnataka and 442 in Uttarakhand. Top forest officials and experts blamed multiple reasons for tiger deaths in the state including congestion in reserves and said the state government needs to learn from Karnataka, where the mortality rate of big cats is much lower.

China Sees Rising India As Rival, Wants To Curb Its Ties With US, Allies: Report

“China perceives rising India as a rival and seeks to impel it to accommodate Beijing’s ambitions by engaging economically while constraining New Delhi’s strategic partnership with the US, Japan, Australia and its relations with other democracies,” the report said.

HiIndia Newsdesk The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued notice to external affairs minister S. Jaishankar on Congress leader Gaurav Hemantbhai Pandya’s appeal challenging his Rajya Sabha election from Gujarat in July last year, on the ground that the Election Commission should not have held separate elections for the two seats vacated by Union ministers Amit Shah and Smriti Irani. The court also issued notice to another BJP MP, Jugalsinh Mathurji Lokhandwala, who also got elected from Gujarat, on the petitions filed by two other unsuccessful Congress candidates Paresh Kumar Dhirajlal Dhanani and Chandrikaben Kanjibhai Chudasama raising the same plea. Pandya and the two others have moved the apex court after Gujarat High Court on February 4 dismissed their petitions challenging the two BJP candidates’ election on the ground that the poll panel had acted illegally by conducting separate polls to the two RS seats vacated by Shah and Irani, after they got elected to the Lok Sabha. Senior advocate Harish Salve, who was present in the court, on a caveat accepted the notice on behalf of Jaishankar and said he would file his response to the petition. Pandya had challenged the election of Jaishankar on the ground that the EC could not have issued separate notifications to fill up the vacant seats as according to him the elections for the two seats ought to have been held simultaneously under the rules and not separately.

HiIndia Newsdesk Washington: China perceives a rising India as a “rival” and wants to constrain its strategic partnership with the US, its allies, and with other democracies, the US State Department said in a report, emphasising that Beijing intends to displace America as the world’s foremost power. Coming ahead of the transition of power from Donald Trump’s administration to President-elect Joe Biden’s administration after the November 3 US presidential election, the detailed policy document highlights that China is undermining the security, autonomy and economic interests of many nations in the region.

“China perceives rising India as a rival and seeks to impel it to accommodate Beijing’s ambitions by engaging economically while constraining New Delhi’s strategic partnership with the US, Japan, Australia and its relations with other democracies,” the report said. “China is undermining the security, autonomy, and economic interests of many others in the region such as member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), including those in the vital Mekong Region, as well as the nations of the Pacific Islands,” the report added.

BJP steps up Congress attack HiIndia Newsdesk The BJP launched an attack on the Congress for the third time in a row on Wednesday in an apparent effort to enmesh the rival once again in allegations of corruption at a time the Opposition party is battling infighting in the aftermath of electoral setbacks. On Wednesday, the BJP fielded former Union minister Rajyavardhan Rathore to try to drag Gandhi family members into the multi-crore AugustaWestland helicopter deal scam. On Tuesday, law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had addressed the media over the same issue and demanded a clarification from Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi over the names of the Congress’s top leaders allegedly surfacing in the scam.

best minds as well as the biggest market. Our local tech solutions have the potential to go global. It is time for tech solution designed in India, to be deployed for the world,” PM Modi said. Addressing the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2020 virtually, Modi said, India is at the sweet spot and it is time for tech solutions that are designed in India, but deployed for the world. Stating that his government’s policy decisions are always aimed at liberalising the tech and innovations industry, Modi said, “Recently, we have eased the compliance burden on the IT industry. The potential of our youth and the possibilities of technology are endless. It is time, we give our best and leverage them. I am confident that our IT sector will keep making us proud.” The Prime Minister also noted that today Digital India has become a way of life particularly for the poor, marginalised and for those in government.

Rs. 2,000 Fine For Not Wearing Mask In Delhi, Up From 500, To Tackle Covid

HiIndia Newsdesk

Arvind Kejriwal said arrangements are being made for over 1,400 ICU beds, “including 663 in Delhi government hospitals and 750 at Centre-run facilities”. New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced a steep ₹ 2,000 fine -- up from the current ₹ 500 -- for those caught without masks, to help control the coronavirus surge that’s in its third week. The Chief Minister also appealed to all political parties and social organisations to distribute masks at public places in Delhi. The hard line by the government came after days of pleas. As the virus rampaged across a city weakened by sliding mercury and an envelope of smoke, Mr Kejriwal had repeatedly appealed to people with folded hands to wear masks and maintain safety norms. But the mad rush of the festive season had prevailed, pushing the daily tally of fresh cases and fatalities to record highs each week since the beginning of November. Over the last weeks, to grapple with the surge that had once crossed the 8,000 mark, the Centre has flown in para-medical personnel and increased the number of beds in hospitals. At the press conference this afternoon, Mr Kejriwal said arrangements are being made for over 1,400 ICU beds, “including 663 in Delhi government hospitals and 750 at Centre-run facilities”.

Porta cabins for troops deployed in Ladakh.

HiIndia Newsdesk With temperature set to dip substantially in the Ladakh sector in the winter months and no solution to the border row with China in sight, the Indian Army has completed the setting up of modern habitats for thousands of soldiers deployed in forward areas to deal with any misadventure by the People’s Liberation Army, officials familiar with developments said on Wednesday. Temperatures in some places held by the Indian Army can dip to minus 40 degrees Celsius, with the super high-altitude areas also likely to receive several feet of snow (30 to 40 feet) during the peak of winters. “Apart from smart camps with integrated facilities which have been built over the years, additional state-ofthe-art habitat with arrangements for electricity, water, heating facilities, health and hygiene has been created to accommodate frontline troops. The troops are not lacking anything and prepared to take on any challenge,” said one of the officials cited above.

HiIndia Newsdesk n a strong message to Beijing, with Chinese President Xi Jinping listening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday said terrorism is the “biggest problem” the world is facing and countries that support terrorists should also be held guilty. Modi’s comments at the virtual BRICS summit Tuesday come against the backdrop of China’s continuing support for Pakistan as its “all-weather ally” despite Islamabad’s track record on cross-border terrorism directed at India. They also follow attempts by Pakistan to target India for fuelling terrorism — a charge that India has denied strongly. However, Modi, who shared a visual platform with Xi for the second time in a week, did not raise the issue of the Ladakh border standoff. Last Tuesday, at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, the Prime Minister spoke about “respecting territorial sovereignty and integrity” —an oblique reference to the standoff.

India at best will have limited access to the promising vaccines against the coronavirus disease from Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech and will need to depend on one or more of the five vaccine candidates under trial in the country, researchers said. Clinical trial results have found the Moderna vaccine to be over 94 per cent effective and the Pfizer-BioNTech product over 90 per cent effective in protecting people from the Covid-19 infection and bolstered hopes for early vaccine roll-outs. But Indian health officials and vaccine researchers are convinced that any mass vaccination campaign against Covid-19 in India would have to hinge on other vaccine candidates under evaluation here.

Nitish Kumar Amit Shah brands Kashmir alliance a ‘gang’ has his way with The home minister’s offensive comes two days portfolio allocation after the Congress decided it would have a tie-up with the alliance for the maiden District Development Council polls beginning on November 26

HiIndia Newsdesk Bihar chief minister and JDU president Nitish Kumar on Tuesday refused to yield further to ally BJP and distributed ministerial portfolios in line with his wishes. He also struck a deal on “an equal number of departments” with the BJP, signalling that there may not be too much difference in the number of ministers from the two parties when the cabinet is expanded despite a vast gap between the BJP’s 74 MLAs and the JDU’s 43.

Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday used the phrase “Gupkar Gang” to describe the seven-party alliance fighting for the restoration of Article 370, insinuating that it was “anti-national” and attacked the Congress for joining hands with it. “The Gupkar Gang is going global! They want foreign forces to intervene in Jammu and Kashmir. The Gupkar Gang also insults India’s Tricolour. Do Sonia Ji and Rahul Ji support such moves of the Gupkar Gang? They should make their stand crystal clear to the people of India,” Shah said, issuing a series of tweets. Shah’s offensive comes two days after the Congress decided it would have a

tie-up with the alliance for the maiden District Development Council polls beginning on November 26. The Congress has not formally joined the alliance, which calls itself the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration. The National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party are its lead players. “Jammu and Kashmir has been, is and will always remain an integral part of India. Indian people will no longer tolerate an unholy ‘global gathbandhan’ against our national interest. Either the Gupkar Gang swims along with the national mood or else the people will sink it,” the home minister said in another tweet.

HiIndia Newsdesk Mumbai police on Wednesday asked actor Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel to appear before them on November 23 and 24 respectively over their “objectionable comments” on social media aimed at “spreading communal tension”. This is the third time Mumbai police have asked them to appear before the Bandra police in the matter. They were earlier asked to be present on October 26 and 27 respectively but failed to appear. They were later asked to appear on November 9 and 10 but did not do so.

UN: India terror jibe at Pakistan HiIndia Newsdesk

The Covid-19 pandemic has not prevented some countries from supporting cross-border terrorism and spreading religious hatred, India has said at the UN, in an apparent reference to Pakistan, asserting that the United Nations must speak decisively and not take sides among religions or justify terrorism in any way. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador T S Tirumurti, said on Tuesday that India condemns all forms of anti-semitism and all forms of discrimination on religious grounds anywhere in the world. “We now have countries taking advantage of the ongoing pandemic and spreading divisive hatred to other parts of the world on the basis of religion. COVID has not prevented them from supporting cross-border terrorism to kill innocent people and spread religious hatred, he said, without naming any country.

‘Virat is worth two players, as batsman and captain,’ Glenn McGrath says Kohli’s absence wil ‘impact series’

HiIndia Newsdesk Before the Indian team travelled to Australia for the upcoming series, the BCCI announced that captain Virat Kohli has been granted a paternal leave following the first Test which begins from 17th December. It meant that Kohli will only play the pink-ball Test in Adelaide but will miss remainder of the series. Former Australia pacer Glenn McGrath was

questioned on how would Kohli’s absence impact the series, and he said that it is a big blow for the Indian team. “It will impact the series. The player of his quality and class, for India to lose him in three out of four Tests is a big blow. It will be for the other players to step up. I can totally understand him wanting to go back for his first child’s birth,” McGrath said in a select media interaction. “Kohli is worth two players; one, as a batsman and two, as the captain, setting the field with his energy and attitude. Australia would want to dominate the series and level the ledger. They have Smith and Warner back,” McGrath added. The 50-year-old further said that with Kohli only playing the Adelaide Test, he will have to make an impact in that game to help his team win the match, as it would set up rest of the series.

“Expansionism Shows Distorted Mindset”: PM Slams China In Diwali Speech The Prime Minister warned “expansionist” forces and said the nation’s soldiers would give a “prachand jawab (fierce reply)” if borders were threatened HiIndia Newsdesk Jaisalmer: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a subtle but significant swipe at China, has hit out at “expansionist” forces that show a “distorted mindset which belongs to the 18th century”. The Prime Minister warned such forces against taking advantage of India’s tolerance and said the nation’s soldiers would give a “prachand jawab (fierce reply)” if borders were threatened. “India believes in a policy of understanding and making others understand... but if an attempt to test our resolve is made, then the country will give a fierce reply,” the Prime Minister said Saturday while spending Diwali with soldiers at the strategically key Longewala post in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer. “No force in the world can prevent our soldiers from protecting our borders. India has shown it has strength and the political will to give a befitting reply to those challenging it. The world now knows that

India will not compromise with its interests even one bit,” he added. Today’s warning is not the first by Prime Minister Modi. Last week, while addressing the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), he called on members (this includes China and Pakistan) to “respect one another’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”. In July, during a surprise visit to a Ladakh forward post - days after 20 Indian soldiers were killed at Galwan Valley - the Prime Minister, without naming China, said: “The age of expansionism is over... History is witness that expansionist forces have either lost or were forced to turn back.” He also underscored that India would not stop building roads and bridges in the border area, which is believed to have been the cause of China’s aggression. On that occasion China responded by calling the comment “groundless and exaggerated”.

The power scales have tipped with the JDU becoming the junior partner with 43 seats and the JP Nadda-led party emerging the biggest NDA player with 74 The BJP and Nitish Kumar’s JDU are said to be bargaining hard with each other over a power-sharing deal in Bihar. The power scales have tipped with the JDU becoming the junior partner with 43 seats and the BJP emerging the biggest NDA player with 74. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that Nitish would remain chief minister. The NDA’s tally of 125 includes four seats each of Jitan Ram Manjhi’s HAMS and Bollywood set designer Mukesh Sahni’s VIP. They will also have to be accommodated. The most important issue is the division of cabinet berths and government departments. The Bihar cabinet can have 36 ministers, including the chief minister. The JDU and the BJP have been following a formula of one minister for every four MLAs. The outgoing cabinet had 33 ministers — 19 from the JDU, including Nitish, and 14 from the BJP, including deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi. “This situation is going to turn around this time. Our party will have 18 or 19 ministers, while the JDU will have 13 or 14 ministers. One each from HAMS and VIP will be incorporated,” a senior BJP leader told. BJP leader and road construction minister Nand Kishore Yadav said: “Only a few people will be sworn in at the beginning. The expansion of the cabinet and the redistribution of government departments will happen in due course.” The BJP is said to be eyeing home and education, now with the JDU. “We would definitely want the education department. Our party, the RSS and the ABVP have always resented not being able to run education in the state as per our policies…. The education department is coming to us. We are trying to get the home department also,” a BJP leader said.

Sunak was born on May 12, 1980, in Southampton, Hampshire, to Hindu Punjabi parents, Yashvir and Usha Sunak, who came from East Africa. His father worked as a GP, his mother as a pharmacist. Of course, it is well known that Rishi is married to Akshata, the daughter of Infosys founder N. R. Narayana Murthy, but their relationship began before her father became one of the richest men in India.

But, in the name of LRS, the government is trying to levy a hefty penalty on the citizens by charging at least 4-5 times higher than the original purchase cost. This will become a huge burden on the people of Telangana. Therefore, we demand the government must scrap this blood-sucking LRS scheme before the GHMC elections itself," demanded AICC Spokesperson Dr Sravan Dasoju.

Brisbane is a great place to start if Adelaide Alexander Zverev rebounds to beat cannot host 1st Test, says Hazlewood Diego Schwartzman at ATP Finals HiIndia Newsdesk Australia fast bowler Jo s h Ha z l e wo o d would like to see the Gabba host the first Test against India if the coronavirus crisis deepens in Adelaide, forcing a shift in venue for the BorderGavaskar series-opener. Australia and India's Test series is set to begin with the Day-Night Test in Adelaide from December 17 but a host of new coronavirus cases in the city has cast doubts on whether the match will go ahead or not as neighbouring states closed their borders with South Australia. The 32-year-old was ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 after playing just one game for Delhi Capitals before a "left internal oblique muscle tear" ended his campaign prematurely. Ishant Sharma was not included in the Indian Test squad for the same reason and his participation in the 4-match Test series against Australia is subject to him clearing the fitness test and also to board's ability to charter him to the Kangaroo nation. I think the longer we wait the hotter it gets up there so the quicks would all be happy to get that game done in early December. We obviously have a really good record (in Brisbane) and it's a great place to start," Hazlewood told reporters. The outbreak in Adelaide forced players such as captain Tim Paine into self-isolation while others preparing for the domestic Big Bash League were moved to a training camp on the New South Wales coast. Even though Hazlewood has no issues in playing at the Gabba, he feels the Pink-Ball Test should only be held at the Adelaide Oval due to nature of the wicket.

Virat Kohli's absence an opportunity for KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara to step in: Harbhajan

Veteran India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh in an exclusive interview to Sports Tak has said that Virat Kohli's absence after the first Test will open a window of opportunities for players like KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara. HiIndia Newsdesk

India captain Virat Kohli's decison to return back to India after the first of the 4-match Test series has left many worried. Virat Kohli is a force to reckon and his mere presence on the field can put the opposition on the back foot. The energy he brings on the field is unmatched and his celebrations after the fall of wickets is a small proof of it. The 32-year-old will be returning back to India after the Adelaide Test to attend the birth of his first child which is expected to arrive in January. India's prolific number

four's absence will surely leave a void in the team but India off-spinner wants the team see Virat Kohli's absence as an window of opportunity. Harbhajan Singh in an exclusive interview with Sports Tak has opined that a batsman like KL Rahul, who is making a comeback in Indian Test side, can find a window of opportunity in his captain's absence. Playing in front of 18,000 empty seats, both players lacked sparkle in a subdued contest but Zverev looked on course for a comfortable win as he led 3-1 in the second set. The German appeared to lose focus though and Schwartzman grabbed his chance to win five of the next six games and extend the match into a decider. Zverev dominated the decider though and will go into a final group match against Djokovic on Friday with a semi-final place still possible. Djokovic faces Medvedev later with the winner guaranteed a place in the semi-finals.

ECB accused of racism Rafael Nadal’s rare loss by former cricketer and umpire John Holder demands probe into lack of non-white officials HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk Lionel Messi was all praise for Javier Mascherano after his former Argentina and Barcelona teammate retired. Messi played with Mascherano for 14 of his 16 years in the national team, and for nine years together at Barcelona. Messi succeeded Mascherano as Argentina captain. “It was so many years together, seeing each other every day and sharing so much,” Messi said on his Instagram account. “We lived very happy moments and also some very hard for Argentina and Barcelona. We have missed you since you left.”

Former Test umpire John Holder has accused the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) of "years of racism" and demanded an independent inquiry into the lack of match officials from ethnic minority groups in the country. A former Hampshire cricketer, Holder, who officiated in 11 Tests and 19 ODIs in a career spanning almost three decades, has said that non-white umpires have not been appointed to first-class list since 1992. "I've lived in England for 56 years. And I can tell you, hand on heart, I have never experienced racism before. But when you look at these figures, when you understand what is going on, it is hard to reach any other conclusion," Holder told "When I stopped working for the ICC, I

contacted the ECB to offer my services to mentor umpires. I didn't even get a reply. "Instead, ex-players, some of whom have never stood as umpires, were appointed to the role. That is ludicrous. It's like employing someone who can't drive to be a driving instructor." anburn Holder, who played in 40 Tests and 12 ODIs for the West Indies, was the last non-white umpire on the ECB's firstclass list. He was appointed in 1992 and since then many non-white candidates, including Devon Malcolm, have tried to join the profession but to no avail. "If Devon Malcolm, who is not only a fine cricketer but an exceptional man, cannot progress, what chance would I have had?" Holder asked.

New Zealand's 'Bird Of The Year' Election Tainted By Voter Fraud "The presidency doesn't belong to any one individual or any one party," wrote Michelle Obama.

Former first lady of the United States Michelle Obama has slammed President Donald Trump and his administration's refusal to allow the transition to go forward in a social media post shared earlier today. "I want to urge all Americans, especially our nation's leaders, regardless of party, to honor the electoral process and do your part to encourage a smooth transition of power, just as sitting presidents have done throughout our history," she wrote. Michelle Obama recalled how she and her husband Barack Obama welcomed the Trumps to the White House, putting her own disappointment at the 2016 election result aside. "I was hurt and disappointed-but the votes had been counted and Donald Trump had won," she wrote, saying that the transition had not been easy for her but she respected the choice the American people made. "The presidency doesn't belong to any one individual or any one party," wrote Michelle Obama.

She confessed that it had not been easy for her to welcome the Trumps to the White House, writing: "Donald Trump had spread racist lies about my husband that put my family in danger. That wasn't something I was ready to forgive." In her post, she said it took "strength and maturity to put my anger aside" and recalled welcoming Melania Trump into the White House, speaking to her about her own experience of living and raising children there. "We invited the folks from the president-elect's team into our offices and prepared detailed memos for them, offering what we'd learned over the past eight years," wrote Michelle Obama, comparing this to Trump's refusal to ensure a smooth transition of power. Donald Trump has repeatedly refused to concede the election, despite mainstream American media declaring Democrat Joe Biden as the winner after he crossed the mandatory 270 electoral votes out of the 538-member Electoral College. "This isn't a game," Ms Obama wrote while concluding her post. "So I want to urge all Americans, especially our nation's leaders, regardless of party, to honor the electoral process and do your part to encourage a smooth transition of power, just as sitting presidents have done throughout our history." Michelle Obama's post has gone viral with over 2.7 million 'likes' in a matter of hours. "This is what we all needed to hear. Thank you for constantly being a beacon of hope to all of us," wrote one person in the comments section.

New Zealand has discovered evidence of voter fraud in an important election - its annual 'Bird of the Year' campaign. Forest and Bird - the environmental conservation organisation that handles the election discovered 1,500 fraudulent votes in the election campaign, exposing the dirty side of avian democracy. Ultimately, the kakapo - a fat, flightless parrot - emerged victorious in the election tainted by voter fraud, reports CNN According to a statement from Forest and Bird, illegitimate votes briefly pushed the kiwi pukupuku to the top, but were removed after being discovered. The votes were cast on Monday morning using fake email addresses that were traced back to the same IP address. "It's lucky we spotted this little kiwi trying to sneak in an extra 1,500 votes under the cover of darkness!" says Laura Keown, spokesperson for Bird of the Year. "But they'll have to play by the rules like all of the other birds to win the competition." The kakapo has made history as the only bird to win the competition twice. officially the world's heaviest parrot, the kakapo is a flightless and nocturnal bird endemic to New Zealand.

The capital’s health system is under tremendous strain: Government figures showed 90% of the critical care beds with ventilators designated for virus patients and 86% of critical care beds without ventilators were full as of Thursday. At Aakash Healthcare, a private hospital in New Delhi, all the critical care beds there were full, and many patients were waiting outside the hospital, said Dr. Akshay Budhraja, a pulmonologist. In New Delhi, meanwhile, the disease is on the rise, and health officials found this week that the prevalence of infections in markets was much higher than expected, and the city has added an average of 6,700 new cases each day in recent weeks. Despite that, markets are still full there and in other major cities, as fatigue with wearing masks and maintaining a safe distance from others set in during the recent festival season, including celebrations for the Diwali holiday. Experts worry that get-togethers for the festival of light will yield yet another surge in cases in the coming weeks. “The next four weeks are crucial. The road is very bumpy,” said Dr. S.K. Budhraja expressed frustration with the lack of understanding about the severity of the disease and the measures needed to slow its spread — not just in markets, but even within the hospital. Family members of patients who are likely infected with COVID-19 but asymptomatic were roaming around the hospital. “They don’t understand,” he said. State Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the health system would manage to keep up with the demand. He said New Delhi is hoping to add 1,400 more critical care beds and that all private hospitals have been asked to reserve 80% of their critical care beds, and over 60% of their other beds for

virus patients. “Our doctors, medical superintendents, medical directors and the entire medical fraternity made such tremendous arrangements to manage COVID-19 that Delhi is not witnessing a crisis,” he said. But at the city’s main crematorium, nearly all the pyres burn simultaneously. Families would usually come in huge groups to chant prayers and carry the body to the pyre. Now, each funeral is small, and loved ones in hazmat suits hurry through the process. The government is considering increasing restrictions in markets. But, so far, officials have held off because they are wary of inflicting any more damage to the economy. In the meantime, the fine for not wearing a mask was increased fourfold to 2,000 rupees ($27) — a massive sum for the millions of Indians who live on less than $2 per day. hase three trials of India’s first vaccine against COVID-19 has started in what is the largest human trials to be conducted with about

26,000 participants, Bharat Biotech announced on Monday. The Hyderabad-based company has been developing the vaccine, Covaxin, in collaboration with

the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) – India’s premier medical research body. The first doses of the vaccine were administered to volunteers at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad on Monday as part of the trial which will be monitored over the next year. Covaxin has shown promising safety and immunogenicity data in trials done during phase one and phase two, the company said. The India trial comes a day after the US biotech firm Moderna Inc said preliminary data from a continuing phase three study of its experimental COVID-19 vaccine showed it to be 94.5 percent effective.

ctor Saif Ali Khan has revealed that he is currently in the final stage of signing a Netflix film. Saif was one of the first mainstream Bollywood stars to enter the digital medium with Netflix’s Sacred Games in 2018. The new film, details of which are under wraps, would mark Saif Ali Khan’s return to the streaming platform. “I recently heard a wonderful script for a Netflix movie. I absolutely loved the script, the idea and the director. We are trying to sort out the dates before we lock. We are almost there,” Saif told. “I am excited with my lineup. I feel Bhoot Police and Adipurush need to release on the big screen. They are large screen family entertainers. I want both films to be 3D. Adipurush definitely will be. In Adipurush, I play Raavan and it’s just so exciting.” Saif Ali Khan said even though he has deep dived into his role in Adipurush, he is looking forward to how the character will be brought to life on-screen. “Apart from being one of the deadliest roles in mythology and our culture, it’s also how will he be interpreted and presented. Will he have ten heads all the time? How do you show it? Bring in state of the art computer graphics? That’s an exciting area. We are working on those things,” he added.

It is Aaradhya Bachchan’s ninth birthday today. On Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan’s daughter’s special day, doting grandfather Amitabh Bachchan took to Instagram to share an adorable collage. Big B shared a fan-made collage of Aaradhya’s photos over nine years and wrote, “Happy birthday Aaradhya .. all my love

Taapsee Pannu: In the new year, I will be breathing cricket Currently shooting for Rashmi Rocket, Taapsee Pannu to train for cricketer act in Shabaash Mithu by January

“I keep telling everyone that you should attend as many workshops as possible, do theatre, practice, read and watch. It is not something that you will learn in four or six months or a year, it is an ongoing process,” Bajpayee “This is an unforgiving profession because there is so much at stake that nobody wants to give you a second chance. You have to be good at what you are supposed to be doing.” After years of doing theatre and with a work experience of over two decades, Bajpayee said he has finally gained the awareness about the kind of approach he should have while portraying a character. “I read scripts as many times as possible, I practice. It takes a lot of time to put flesh and blood into a character. When the character is given to you, it is on paper and to make it alive you have to pour all your skill and experience into it. “Depending on the character and the genre, I decide the approach that should be taken,” Bajpayee said in the interview taken on the sidelines of a panel discussion held here by Royal Stag Barrel Select Large Short Films.

Taapsee Pannu is in no mood to slow down — neither on the running track nor on her projects. Last week, the actor started shooting for her third film post the pandemic, Rashmi Rocket, which sees her as a Kutch-based sprinter. Even as she has attained the robust physique of a sprinter for the Akarsh Khurana-directed venture, Pannu is aware that the real challenge lies ahead — come January, she will begin her cricket lessons for Shabaash Mithu. "Most of my races for Rashmi Rocket will be filmed in December. As soon as the races are done, I will kick off my three-month cricket training before I start shooting for the film. I will continue practising the sport for the entire span of Shabaash Mithu's filming," says Taapsee Pannu, who will step into the shoes of Mithali Raj, the Indian women's cricket team skipper, for the biopic. The actor had kicked off training with Raj's friend and fellow cricketer Nooshin Al Khadeer earlier this year, but the lockdown put the brakes on the practice sessions. "In the new year, I will be breathing cricket," she promises. Does that mean she will forgo her customary yearend break? "Once I finish filming Looop Lapeta and Rashmi Rocket by February, I will head out for a few days.

Khel is a tribute to KBC 12 winner BicchootheKafilms of 80s and 90s Mohita Sharma Divyenndu Sharmaa

Bicchoo Ka Khel actor Divyenndu talks about the difference between his characters Akhil and Munna, his acting process and why he is not afraid to be typecast now.

Mohita Sharma opened up about becoming a crorepati, and interacting with Big B. Tell us about the moment when Amitabh Bachchan announced you as the crorepati. It was a dream come true moment for me. As I have already mentioned, more than me, it was my husband who wanted to see this happen. I was a mere means to fulfil his dream. When he announced my answer was correct, I was overjoyed and had goosebumps. I really did not expect something like this would happen to me. The emotions are yet to sink in, and I think only after I watch the episode, will I accept this win. Can you also share the journey from the fastest finger first chair to the hot seat. What was going in your mind? When we had arrived on set, we had multiple trial runs of the fastest finger first round. I came first in most of them and so was quite confident. However, when the game began, I was third, and I realised that the pressure was doing more harm than good. When the first contestant was on the hot seat, I kept practising how I could move my fingers faster. Thankfully it worked, and finally got through in the second round.

Kapil Sharma enjoys ‘paranthas’ with Sidhu

Actor-comedian Kapil Sharma, who is on a trip to Punjab, recently met former cricketer and politician Navjot Singh Sidhu. Kapil and Sidhu have worked together on the popular TV show The Kapil Sharma Show. Kapil shared photos on social media where he can be seen enjoying ‘paranthas’ with Sidhu. Navjot Singh Sidhu also posted photos from his meeting with Kapil and wrote, “Kapil the genius comes calling with dear friends Deepak, Rishi and Gurjot…” Ever since the photos of their meeting surfaced on social media, fans of The Kapil Sharma Show have been speculating the return of the former cricketer on the show. Sidhu was asked to leave the show following his comments on the Pulwama terror attack in 2019. Archana Puran Singh replaced him and continues to be a part of the show.

Divyenndu Sharmaa started his acting career as Liquid in Luv Ranjan’s 2011 hit Pyaar Ka Punchanama. He then played a similar happygo-lucky character in David Dhawan’s Chashme Baddoor. But, after that, he refused to once again play a similar role in Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 because the 37-year-old actor had faith that “someday someone will see I am also suitable for a dark character.” And then Mirzapur 2 happened where he stood out as hot-headed gangster Munna Tripathi. Now, as a simple but intelligent boy Akhil Shrivastav, who is out to find the truth behind his father’s death in police custody in AltBalaji and ZEE5 show Bicchoo Ka Khel, Divyenndu hopes he once again wins over the audience.

What made you take up Bicchoo Ka Khel?

It was the name of the show, Bicchoo Ka Khel. The moment they said it, I was like, ‘I like the sound of it. It has got a cult feel to it.’ Also, the setting of the show – the life of a character, who wants to become a writer, becomes similar to a pulp fiction novel. There are twists and turns on every page of his life. Secondly, it has been shot interestingly. It is kind of a tribute to the films of 80s and 90s. There is dialoguebaazi, background score, revenge, planning, plotting, exposing the killer. After doing something as heavy and intense as Mirzapur, I thought let’s take up something light, entertaining and commercial but with a good script and well carved out character.

Michael B Jordan has been named the Sexiest Man Alive 2020 by People magazine. The Creed actor graces the cover of the latest issue of the magazine. On getting the honour, he told the publication, “It’s a cool feeling. You know, everybody always made that joke, like, ‘Mike, this is the one thing you’re probably not going to get.’ But it’s a good club to be a part of.” He was also recently included in Time Magazine’s list of 100 Most Influential People of 2020. Michael B Jordan won over critics with his work in films like Fruitvale Station and Just Mercy. He became a global star with his performance in the 2018 MCU film Black Panther, where he played the antagonist Erik Killmonger. Michael will next be seen in Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse where he plays John Clark, a US Navy Seal. The film will stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Throughout the wedding functions, the 'Queen' actor kept on treating her fans with her vibrant and splendid pictures. Recently, Kangana took to her Instagram handle to share a series of pictures of herself from her brother Aksht's wedding reception in Rajasthan. For the function, Kangana wore a gorgeous Sabyasachi saree. The actor was looking ethereal in this beige coloured Indian attire. To add a Pahadi touch to the outfit gifted to her by her parents on the happy occasion, Kangana donned a Himachali shawl and cap. She set the Internet ablaze with her killer Pahadi avatar.

Kangana Ranaut's Pahadi Avatar

The actress who's entire week was filled with festivities, looked elegant in a creamy Sabyasachi saree for the traditional wedding reception. Kangana picked out a classic Sabyasachi drape for her brother and sister-in-law's traditional Dham style wedding deception. Her off-white saree bore intricately detailed gold floral embroidery all over. It also featured a high neck blouse and a drape with a scalloped hem. Over this, Kangana layered a Bhuttico woven woollen shawl and cap, gifted to her by her parents! To accentuate her look, the actress piled on a heavy choker-style necklace with diamonds and matching circular earrings. Her makeup was on point with blush-pink cheeks defined eyes, a red lip and simple bindi completing her look. Kangana's look for the wedding season and bookmarking her jewellery as well, for it makes for a lavish look. Kangana's relationship with the designer's outfits go a long way back and we are not surprised that she picked his creations to sport at the wedding.

P The #1 Reason You Should Slim Down Now, Says Science Doctors have long recognized that obesity is linked to an increased risk of certain cancers. That includes thyroid cancer, as several recent studies have confirmed. What has not been so clear is whether you can reverse that risk by losing the excess weight.

revious studies have suggested that weight loss can help reduce the risk of obesity-related cancers. Thyroid cancer is obesityrelated, but the association between weight loss and thyroid cancer, in particular, had not yet been established. Although a 2019 study out of Korea suggested such an association might exist, the conclusion reached was that more research was necessary. Dr. Kandil hopes that the results of this study will inspire "lifestyle alterations" among those at risk and inspire doctors in the field of endocrinology to shift some of their focus to weight control strategies for cancer prevention. Speaking of weight control strategies, here are our 200 best weight loss tips. 1. Drink more water 2. Eliminate sugar-sweetened beverages

science-backed health benefits of coconut water, including post-workout hydration and hangover relief

What is coconut water? Coconut water is a clear liquid that comes from the inside of young, green coconuts. This water nourishes the fruit and eventually gets absorbed into the meat of the coconut as it matures. Coconut water may support heart health Though more research is needed, coconut water may help control blood pressure, a key indicator of your heart health. In a small 2005 study, people who drank 1.3 cups of coconut water twice a day for 10 days saw significant reductions in their blood pressure when compared to people who drank bottled water. This may be because coconut water contains potassium, a vital nutrient for heart health. If your diet is low in potassium, adding more through foods or drinks like coconut water can help lower your risk of heart disease and high blood pressure. Though research on humans is still needed, animal studies also suggest that coconut water may also boost heart health by helping to lower cholesterol and prevent blood clots. Coconut water provides excellent post-workout hydration When you sweat during a workout, you don't only lose water, but also electrolyte salts like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. "Coconut water helps to replenish electrolytes lost after a sweaty workout session," says Tracy Lockwood Beckerman, a registered dietitian in private practice in New York City. 3. Coconut water may help prevent kidney stones Kidney stones form when minerals like calcium and oxalate clump together and crystalize inside your kidneys. Coconut water may help prevent kidney stones by increasing the levels of citrate and potassium in your urine. These compounds help prevent calcium from building up in your kidneys and forming stones. A small 2018 study found that people who drank two liters of coconut water per day saw significant increases in the levels of citrate and potassium in their urine.

With the level of air pollution increasing each year, the number of lungs patients has also seen an increase. However, this year COVID-19 has worsened the situation and people need to take extra care of their health. The increase in pollution, coupled with the coronavirus pandemic makes it vital that one takes utmost care of their lungs. The best way to keep your lungs healthy is Yoga.

1. Dhanurasana or bow pose:

In this yoga, you have to lie down on your stomach and bend your knees towards your hips and hold your ankles with your hands. Now lift your legs and arms as high as you can and keep your face up. Try to hold the posture as long as you can.

2. Hasta Uttanasana or raised arm yoga pose

Stand straight in Samasthiti and raise your arms over your head and then stretch upwards with folded hands in a way that your palms face each other and are joined. Keep your head in between your arms. Now bend back gently and keep your knees straight and eyes open. Stay in the same position for some time and then come back to the original position and repeat.

3. Ustrasana aka camel pose

First Kneel on the mat, and place your hands on your heaps. Then arch your back and slide your palms over feet, keeping the arms straight. Keep your neck in a neutral position. Stay

in the position for some time and then breathe out and come back to initial posture. And then keep your hands on hips.

4. Ardha chandrasana or half moon pose

The name itself hints the Yoga posture. Ardha Chandrasana means posture like a half-moon. To start this yoga, extend your left leg back and drop your knee and then extend your toes out. Stretch your arms over your head, and look upwards. Keep your right knee parallel to the ankle and bend your upper body back, and form an arch-like a halfmoon. Repeat the same posture with the other leg.

5. Chakrasana aka wheel pose

Lay down on your back and fold your legs from your knees, and place your feet firmly on the floor. Fold your arms at the elbows with your palms towards the sky. Now rotate your arms at the shoulders, and keep your palms on the floor to form an arch by lifting up your body. Keep your neck relaxed and keep your head gently falling behind.

This new startup called ‘LuxeFit Pro’. The company has launched latest LuxeFit Pro Series 5 Watch This company offers a new and better smartwatch, at fraction of the cost, without losing a single feature of premium smartwatches. The LuxeFit Pro began with a small group of people that shared one vision: to make smartwatches in the market affordable for everyone. The team reversed engineered other smartwatches in the market and began making improvements all while keeping the cost low. It’s built with a hardened shell and touchscreen glass, making this nearly indestructible all while maintaining an innovative look and comfort. After using it for 3 months now, I can say this is even better than some of the most luxurious smartwatches I previously used… (Yeah, those that cost 15 times higher…)The LuxeFit Pro Series 5 is not just any smartwatch. Yes, it has all the basic features such as taking phone calls, counting steps, message alerts, Fitness Tracker, etc But what makes the LuxeFit Pro Series 5 stand out is their specific interest in your health… And not just your health, but also your LIFE as a whole.

Google Maps is all set to receive new features to help you travel safely during Covid-19. The search giant is claiming that it has already added around 250 new features and improvements to Google Maps in the past few months. Now, Google is rolling out an update, which will show live transit “crowdedness” status and takeout and delivery orders status. The update will soon hit both Android and iOS devices. With this update, Google Maps users will be able to see alltime detected cases in an area, along with links to COVID resources from local authorities. The live status of takeout and delivery will be shown in countries like Canada, United States, Germany, Australia, Brazil, and India. But, for this information, you will have to order using the Google Maps app. It will show you expected wait times and delivery fees, with the ability to quickly reorder. All this will not only help you travel safely during COVID 19, but also makes much easier for you and saves a lot of time. Google says that “when it’s safe to head to restaurants, you’ll soon be able to quickly see the status of your reservation in 70 countries around the world.” The two new features might already be available for you as the company has already started rolling out the update. If you haven’t recevied the update yet, then just wait for a few days.

Google plans to release a version of Chrome that will run natively on Apple’s new Macs with Arm-based processors on Wednesday, according to Mark Chang, a Chrome product manager. Google actually began rolling the new version out Tuesday, but paused the rollout because that version may have crashed unexpectedly. In theory, a native version of the notoriously resource-hungry browser might run more efficiently on Apple’s Arm-based computers. In our reviews of the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini equipped with the new M1 chip, though, we found that the version of Chrome built for Intel chips already runs well on Apple’s new Macs, so hopefully this native version runs even better. At first look, I was stunned by the appearance of the Xbox Series S. It reminded me of the PlayStation, which I got from a vintage shop in London two years back. If the PlayStation looks like a tiffin box, the Series S bears a striking resemblance to the Sony Boombox. For a few seconds, I completely forgot the Xbox Series S was designed to be a traditional gaming console. It has a small footprint and it’s white with a striking black circle in the center. That black circle is not a speaker as many thought it would be. Instead, a black circular disc is a vent that keeps the console cool. What I like about the Series S design is that you can keep the console in both vertical and horizontal positions. It also fits perfectly on my cluttered TV stand. At the rear, there is the power port, an Ethernet jack, two USB-A ports, an HDMI

output and a storage expansion slot. The front of the console meanwhile features a single USB-A port and no disc drive. Yes, this is a console that lacks a disc drive because it is designed to be an all-digital console. That means I have the freedom to download a new AAA title the moment it gets released from the Microsoft store. No more waiting in line,

23

or asking your friend to get a game from abroad. My broadband is fast enough to download a game like Sea of Thieves in less than 30 minutes, so for me, the concept of a digital-only console works. No one is denying the fact that the Series X is a superior console to the Series S. If you are a hardcore gamer and a fair idea of the console market, I am 100 per cent sure you will choose the Series X over the Series S any day. The Series X offers a different set of speed and graphics performance along with the ability to play physical games. But if you are someone who is a casual gamer and owns a 1080p TV but wants to play the nextgen titles, the Series S will be a perfect fit for you.

Both Apple and Microsoft have launched ARM-based PCs, the Surface Pro X and M1-powered Macs. Adobe has now released the ARM64 beta version of its Photoshop software for Windows and macOS. This will allow the users to run Photoshop natively on their ARM-based PCs. Currently, the software runs via emulation on Windows and via Apple’s Rosetta 2 software on macOS. Microsoft Surface Pro X, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air and Mac Mini are the only devices powered by using ARM architectures for their chipsets. It is being said that the new native ARM version of Photoshop will help improve performance by a lot. However, due to the app currently being in its beta stages, a number of features are missing. These missing features include content-aware fill, patch tool, healing brush and more. Apart from this, there are also a number of known issues for both macOS and Windows versions. But the company does note that a number of features and bug fixes will be added to Photoshop within a few weeks. The new ARM64 beta version of Photoshop is currently not supported for daily workloads according to the company. However, if you want to test it out, you can access it from the beta apps tab in the Creative Cloud desktop app. Photoshop is currently the only app for which Adobe has started pushing out support for ARM-based systems. Other Creative Cloud apps could soon follow, but the company has officially not revealed any details regarding this.

When they struggle, our neighborhoods struggle.” said ComEd CEO Joe Dominguez. “By offering a new billassistance option targeting small and family-owned businesses, we hope to do our part to ensure that the businesses that we all love and depend upon continue to be a part of our lives.” ComEd’s Small Business Assistance Program provides eligible small-business customers that are past due on their energy bills with a one-time grant equal to 30 percent of their total ComEd balance (up to $1,000) for a limited time. up their remaining balance due on a payment plan of up to six months. Small-business customers can visit ComEd.com/SmallBizAssistance or call 1-877-4-COMED-1 (1-877-426-6331) to learn more or apply for the Small Business Assistance Program. pandemic. For a limited time, this financialassistance program provides an additional onetime grant of up to $300 to help reduce pastdue balances of income-eligible customers. Assistance through the Helping Hand program is administered directly through ComEd, which expedites the verification process so that customers can receive grants more quickly. Residential customers can apply for Helping Hand grants at ComEd.com/ PaymentAssistance.

Khalsa Care Foundation Safely Carries on Seva with Innovation Despite Pandemic HI INDIA NEWS DESK PACOIMA, CA -The Pacoima, Californiabased Khalsa Care Foundation has been heavily involved in preparing meals for first responders as well as for the needy, and has been providing thousands of pre-packaged warm meals as requested by the Los Angeles mayor’s office and other agencies during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. This selfless voluntary service is provided around the clock by a team of dedicated Indian American and Sikh American volunteers, a news release notes. Not only are the meals freshly prepared and varied, but they are being delivered to the needy who cannot come to KCF because of reasons such as lack of transportation or health issues, it adds. Safety guidelines are strictly adhered to with face masks and social distancing enforced for all. Anyone coming in for whatever reason has to have a face mask on and if they do not have one, face masks are readily available at the desk where volunteers hand them out and everyone has their temperature taken to make sure no one enters if they are not well; hand sanitizing stations are conveniently located for all to use, as well, the KCF said in its release. Devotees going in to the prayer hall find marked spots on the carpet for them to sit at

social distances, it adds. The Ragis in attendance sit behind Plexiglass barriers to meet health and safety guidelines to limit public exposure. Prasad is put in small onetime use individual covered containers for the public to take home which precludes the eating of food on premises, the KCF said. Langar, or free kitchen, follows the same protocol and is handed out in containers for people to take home. This ensures hygienic conditions from preparation to consumption of food in keeping with the volatile health concerns inherent with COVID-19 pandemic, the release said.

Additionally, last month, a routine maintenance ritual of the changing of the Nishan Sahib Chola took place as the old one was showing signs of exposure to the outside elements. A new one had been made and the old one replaced with the singing of hymns and loud Jaikaras of ‘Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal’ exuberantly sounded in a joyous mood by the Sangat in attendance, the release said. KCF also has a free Food Pantry for the local people who make good use of it. And on Fridays, care packages are handed out to the families in need and in this time of uncertainty, the release said.

Newly Married Pakistani American Couple Drown on Caribbean Honeymoon

HI INDIA NEWS DESK NEW YORK , NY – A newly married couple from New York drowned on their honeymoon at a Caribbean resort, family members said. Pakistani American corporate attorney Mohammad Malik, 35, and his bride, Dr. Noor Shah, 29, were swimming near their Turks and Caicos Islands resort on Oct. 28 when they were pulled under by strong riptides, R. Maqbool Malik, the groom’s father, told. Witnesses pulled the couple from the water and performed CPR, but they died at the scene, the bereaved father said. The pair had married four days earlier in East Meadow, New York. “It’s a devastating loss,” Malik said. “This is a shock beyond belief. And it’s a

tragedy of different dimensions when you have to lay two children to rest in a joint funeral.” A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department confirmed the deaths. Malik criticized the resort, Como

Parrot Cay, for failing to post warning signs about potentially dangerous riptides. Chris Orlikowski, a spokesperson for Como Hotels and Resorts, said in a statement Nov. 10 that company officials are “deeply saddened by the tragic accident.” He said the company is cooperating with the investigation. Mohammad Malik, a graduate of Cornell University and an attorney at Olshan Frome Wolosky LLP in Manhattan, was dating Shah, a fourth-year surgical resident who was applying to a vascular surgery fellowship this year, for about two years, according to Newsday. Shah, who grew up in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, was a graduate of RutgersRobert Wood Johnson Medical School and a fourth-year resident in the Department of Surgery at NYU Langone Health.

HI INDIA NEWS DESK SAN JOSE,CA — A Gilroy couple charged with human trafficking on allegations they forced a man to live and work at their liquor store for free — and severely underpaid other migrant employees — have been granted house arrest with strict conditions while they mount their legal defense. After their arraignment Tuesday, Balwinder and Amarjit Mann, 66, were set to be released to their lavish 6,000-square foot home in the hills above Gilroy. Under restrictions set by Judge Ronald Toff in a San Jose courtroom, the Manns will be subject to GPS monitoring and unannounced searches, and will be prohibited from leaving Santa Clara County, with some allowances to leave home for medical and attorney appointments. The Manns also surrendered their passports, and were required to post bond on $250,000 bail apiece; their son-in-law told the court Tuesday he was prepared to post for them. After they were charged and subsequently arrested over the weekend, their bail had been set at $1 million. The Manns were charged with nine felonies encompassing human trafficking, witness intimidation, false imprisonment, at least $120,000 worth of wage theft and conspiracy. They did not enter a plea Tuesday and were ordered back to court Jan. 19. According to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, one man whose experiences comprised the most serious charges “worked 15 hour shifts, seven days a week, slept in a storage room, bathed in a mop bucket, and was never paid.” This man is said to have flown from India to the United States in October 2019 expecting to travel the country with the Manns, but “they took his money and passport and put him to work without pay or a key to leave the liquor store at night,” prosecutors allege. The defendants fell under criminal investigation in February when agents with the state department of Alcoholic Beverage Control conducted a decoy sting for underage alcohol sales at Gavilan Market, and a random inspection of M&M Liquors, both of which are located on Westwood Drive and owned by the Manns. At the liquor store, agents suspected that a man who claimed to be an employee of the liquor store was actually living there, which they confirmed after conducting surveillance on the business, according to an investigative report by ABC. An ensuing investigation eventually joined by DA investigators and the San Jose Police Department identified three other employees for the Manns’ businesses who said they routinely worked more than 12 hours a day and were unaware of minimum wage. Rapper Serius Jones takes plea deal to pimping charge, eligible for release in nine months As per report Balwinder Mann told agents, “well, let’s call him my nephew” in response to questions about his claims the victims were family members or friends, and that they were “just helping out.” Agents also allege that the man who lived in the liquor store was coerced into telling investigators that he was voluntarily working at the store and was given free room and board at the Manns’ home.

USCIS Announces Revised Naturalization Civics Test, More Questions on History HI INDIA NEWS DESK WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Nov. 13 announced plans to implement a revised version of the naturalization civics test. The agency first announced plans to revise the civics test in July 2019, according to the USCIS news release. USCIS revised the civics test as part of a decennial update to ensure that it remains an instrument that comprehensively assesses applicants’ knowledge of American history, government and civic values, it said. The civics test is administered to applicants who apply for U.S. citizenship and is one of the statutory requirements for naturalizing. Applicants who apply for naturalization on or after Dec. 1, 2020, will take the updated version of the test. Those who apply before Dec. 1, 2020, will take the current version of the test, the release notes. “USCIS has diligently worked on revising the naturalization test since 2018, relying on input from experts in the field of adult education to ensure that this process is fair and transparent,” said USCIS Deputy Director for Policy Joseph Edlow in a statement. “Naturalization allows immigrants to become fully vested members of American society, with the same rights and responsibilities as citizens by birth, and offering a fair test, which prepares naturalization applicants for these responsibilities, is of upmost importance to our agency.” The revised test includes more questions that test the applicant’s understanding of U.S. history and civics, in line with

the statutory requirements, and covers a variety of topics that provide the applicant with more opportunities to learn about the United States as part of the test preparation process. The revised test will not change the passing score, which will remain at 60 percent. Candidates must answer 12 questions correctly, out of 20 in order to pass, the release notes. USCIS will maintain the current guidelines for statutorily established special considerations for applicants who are 65 years old or older and have at least 20 years of lawful permanent resident status. These applicants will be asked 10 questions and must answer a minimum of six questions correctly in order to pass, it said. The test items and study guides can be found on the Citizenship Resource

Center on the USCIS website. USCIS has also updated the USCIS Policy Manual accordingly; see Volume 12, Part E, English and Civics Testing and Exceptions, Chapter 2, English and Civics Testing, the release notes. USCIS piloted the test with communitybased organizations and volunteers across the country in summer 2020. The data collected from this pilot was used to help USCIS make determinations about the language and grammatical structure of individual test items, linguistic and cognitive weights assigned to each test item, and to identify those items appropriate for applicants who are 65 years or older, have held lawful permanent resident status for at least 20 years and are granted special consideration by statute, the agency said. More information on USCIS and its programs can be found by visiting uscis.gov.

DHS Proposes to Limit Work Permits for Aliens with Final Orders of Removal HI INDIA NEWS DESK WASHINGTON, DC —The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) today announced a proposed rule that would limit discretionary work authorization for aliens who have final orders of removal and who have been temporarily released from DHS custody on an order of supervision (OSUP). The rule would align the issuance of discretionary employment authorization with the administration’s priorities to protect U.S. workers and strengthen immigration enforcement. Orders of supervision allow DHS to place conditions on and monitor aliens with final orders of removal who have been temporarily released from DHS custody until DHS has the travel documents necessary to remove the alien from the United States. The OSUP contains several conditions for release, including a requirement that aliens cooperate with efforts to procure the travel documents for removal, check in with DHS on designated dates, and present themselves for removal once it is arranged. “Authorizing employment benefits to aliens who have already had due process and have been ordered removed by the U.S. government undermines the rule of law and weakens DHS enforcement and removal operations,” said USCIS Deputy Director for Policy Joseph Edlow. “This effort would also remove the economic incentive for these aliens to not cooperate in the effort to

25

Representative image

obtain travel documents to return to their home countries.” Under current regulations, an alien who has a final order of removal and who is temporarily released from DHS custody on an OSUP is generally eligible for an employment authorization document (EAD). This creates a disincentive for the alien to depart or cooperate with their home country to obtain travel documents to depart the United States. These aliens have used substantial government resources throughout the removal process and have ultimately been ordered removed from the United States by an immigration judge.

Under the proposed rule, only a small subset of these aliens who can demonstrate that DHS has determined that their removal from the United States is impracticable would remain eligible for discretionary employment authorization. DHS will require such aliens to establish economic necessity to work, consistent with other discretionary EAD categories, and USCIS will assess whether they warrant a favorable exercise of discretion for a grant of employment authorization. In addition, aliens who qualify for discretionary employment authorization under the proposed rule and subsequently seek to renew their work authorization would also be required to establish that their employer participates in E-Verify and is in good standing in the program. The proposed rule also would limit the validity period of the employment authorization for aliens released on an OSUP to one year, regardless of whether it is an initial or a renewal employment authorization. When a final rule is published, the changes made by the rule will apply to initial and renewal applications filed on or after the final rule’s effective date. Aliens who are employment-authorized prior to the final rule’s effective date will remain employment authorized until the expiration date on their EAD, unless the EAD is terminated or revoked. The final rule also would not affect applications to replace EADs granted before the final rule’s effective date.

New York’s Empire State Building Lit Up in Orange

BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY - The Federation of Indian Associations, the largest nonprofit umbrella organization in the tristate area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, marked Diwali by illuminating the iconic Empire State Building in New York Nov. 13. The annual event, which began in 2018, is organized in cooperation with the Empire State Realty Trust. Each year for the past two decades, ESRT and FIA have been lighting up the Empire State Building in August in the colors of the Indian tricolor – orange, white and green – to mark India’s Independence Day. The FIA believes that such gestures by ESRT help in spreading the ancient Indian philosophy of ‘Vasudeva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family) and also demonstrates a great harmony in spirit and deeds between people of the world’s largest and oldest democracies, the organization stated in a press release. Despite the challenges and changes due to the Covid-19 pandemic, FIA has not deterred from its goal of serving the community, it said. Although this year – the FIA’s golden jubilee year – went by without the flagship India Day parade, the organization continued with its philanthropic efforts, serving more than 10,000 meals to the community, both in the tristate area and in India. Over 100 Indian Americans gathered Nov. 8 in Roseville, Calif., to celebrate Diwali in quarantine style. Presented by the Sacramento chapter of Sewa, the free event saw families – dressed in traditional Indian clothes – waving, cheering, showcasing their cars decorated with lights. Diwali symbolizes the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance,” stated a press release. On this occasion, which also served as a food drive, Sewa received more than 50 pounds of canned food which it donated to a local food bank. Meanwhile, in the San Francisco East Bay city of San Ramon, California, City Center Bishop Ranch organized Diwali celebrations Nov. 12-14 with rangoli artists, food by Curry Up Now, and the screening of Bollywood films.

“This effort would also remove the economic incentive for these aliens to not cooperate in the effort to

obtain travel documents to return to their home countries.” Under current regulations, an alien who has a final order of removal and who is temporarily released from DHS custody on an OSUP is generally eligible for an employment authorization document (EAD).
