US-Taliban deal hastened Afghan collapse, defence officials say

threatening the security of the US and its allies. After his election, US President Joe Biden continued the plan for withdrawal

but with an end date of 31 August, instead of May. The US defence officials made the comments on Wednesday in testimony to the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee. The hearing is taking place weeks after a chaotic withdrawal at Kabul airport as foreign powers sought to get their citizens home and thousands of desperate Afghans begged for rescue. A suicide attack killed 182 people during the operation. As head of the US Central Command, Gen McKenzie oversaw the withdrawal from Afghanistan, which marked the end of a 20-year presence in the country and America's longest war. Gen McKenzie told the committee the Doha agreement had a strong psychological effect on the Afghan government because it set a date for "when they could expect all assistance to end".

HiIndia Newsdesk The United States has no plans to “normalize or upgrade” diplomatic relat ions wit h t he government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and also does not encourage others to do so, a State Department spokesperson said on Wednesday. The comments came in response to Reuters questions on whether Washington was encouraging and supporting a rapprochement between

Jordan and Syria after Jordan fully reopened its main border crossing with Syria on Wednesday. The move was to boost the countries’ struggling economies and reinforce a push by Arab states to reintegrate Syria after shunning it during its civil war. “The United States will not normalize or upgrade our diplomatic relations with the Assad regime nor do we encourage others to do so, given the atrocities inflicted by the Assad regime on the Syrian people,” a State Department spokesperson said in an email.

Top US defence officials have said the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan can be traced back to a deal between the group and the Trump administration.

The so-called Doha agreement was signed in February 2020 and set a date for the US to withdraw its troops. Gen Frank McKenzie said the deal had a "really pernicious effect" on the Afghan government and military. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin agreed, saying the agreement had helped the Taliban get "stronger". In addition to setting a withdrawal date, the Doha agreement included broad obligations on the Taliban to take steps to prevent groups such as al-Qaeda from

39 trapped Canadian miners rescued after three days

HiIndia Newsdesk All 39 miners trapped deep underground in central Canada have been brought to the surface, three days after an accident damaged the mine's lift. The workers at the Totten mine in Sudbury, Ontario climbed up to 4,000ft (1.2km) using a series of ladders, with the support of a rescue team. The rescued miners were all in good health, according to Vale, the company responsible for the mine. The final miners emerged just before 05:00 local time (10:00 BST).Vale Chief Executive Officer Eduardo Bartolomeo thanked the rescue team for their efforts and said bringing the miners safely to the surface had been a "top priority".They "deserve our deep respect for their perseverance and strong will", he said in a statement early on Wednesday morning. After they reported for the day-shift on Sunday, the miners became trapped after a heavy scoop bucket crashed into the lift system and blocked the shaft, Vale said. After the incident, the miners proceeded to refuge stations, where they had access to food and water, and remained in contact with their families and staff outside the mine.

US, Chinese military officials hold New York attorney general blasts ‘frank, in-depth’ talks, says Pentagon Cuomo’s criticism of her report

HiIndia Newsdesk US and Chinese military officials held “frank, in-depth” talks this week on a range of defense issues, the Pentagon said on Wednesday, as the countries grapple over their competing interests in the Indo-Pacific region. Michael Chase, US deputy assistant secretary of defense for China, held the meetings by video conference on Tuesday and Wednesday with Chinese Major General Huang Xueping, the Pentagon said in a statement. “During the talks, the two sides held a frank, in-depth, and open discussion on a range of issues affecting the US-PRC defense relationship,” the statement said, using the acronym for the People’s

Republic of China. “Both sides reaffirmed consensus to keep communication channels open,” it said. The talks were held two weeks after the United States, Britain and Australia announced a security pact that will provide Australia with nuclear-powered submarines, a move denounced by Beijing. The pact, known as AUKUS, is largely seen as a response by Western allies to avert a Chinese hegemony in Southeast Asia and beyond, particularly the South China Sea. The Pentagon said that during the talks with China “the US side also made clear our commitment to uphold shared principles with our allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific region.”

Britain has been gripped by a rush of panic-buying for almost a week that has left pumps dry across major cities, after oil companies warned they did not have enough tanker drivers to move petrol and diesel from refineries to filling stations. Business minister Kwasi Kwarteng said 150 soldiers had been mobilised, and would be driving tankers within a few days. “The last few days have been difficult, we’ve seen large queues. Kim Jong-un offers to restore interKorean hotline HiIndia Newsdesk North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has said he is willing to restore a vital communication hotline with South Korea, in a possible offer of reconciliation. He also accused the US of proposing talks without changing its "hostile policy" towards the North. Pyongyang severed the hotlines in August this year in protest against South Korea-US military drills. Mr Kim's latest comments came during Pyongyang's annual parliament session. "The US is touting 'diplomatic engagement'... but it is no more than a petty trick for deceiving the international community and hiding its hostile acts and an extension of the hostile policy pursued by the successive U.S. administrations," a report by state news outlet KCNA said. But Mr Kim appeared to extend a conditional olive branch towards South Korea. The KCNA report stated that "[Kim Jongun] expressed the intention to see to it that the North-South communication lines that had been cut off due to the deteriorated interKorean relations are restored first from early October". "[But] it depends on the attitude of the south Korean authorities whether the inter-Korean relations would be restored or continue to keep the present state of worsening." Mr Kim's latest comments echo those his sister made earlier last week, where she said the North was willing to resume talks with the South if it ended its "hostile policies".

Changing China: How Beijing's crackdowns are impacting business

HiIndia Newsdesk The slew of announcements of tough new regulations and the stringent enforcement of existing rules have targeted many of the country's biggest companies. As we explained in the first part of this series on the recent developments in China, these measures are part of President Xi Jinping's centrepiece policy initiative, known as "common prosperity". The phrase is not a new one in China. It has been around since the 1950s, when it was used by the founding leader of the People's Republic of China Mao

Hardly a day has gone by in recent months without news of a fresh crackdown on one part of the Chinese economy or another. Zedong. The sharp escalation of the term's use in the year that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) also celebrates

its 100th anniversary has been seen as a signal that it is now central to government policy. Key to the common prosperity policies are Beijing's attempts to narrow the huge wealth gap between the nation's richest and poorest citizens. It is an issue that some would argue both endangers the rise of the world's second largest economy and poses an existential threat to the CCP. These latest measures are seen by some as a way to rein in the billionaire owners of some of China's biggest companies to instead give customers and workers more of a say in how firms operate and

distribute their earnings. Everything from insurance agents, private tutoring firms, real estate developers and even companies planning to sell shares in the US have come under intense scrutiny. The technology industry, in particular, has seen a deluge of action against it, including crackdowns on ecommerce firms, online finance services, social media platforms, gaming companies, cloud computing providers, ridehailing apps and cryptocurrency miners and exchanges. China Evergrande Group is another vast company that has found its fate intertwined with common prosperity policies.

Why Biden Brought Up Gandhi In His Meeting With Modi

A

The US president is pointing to the danger to democracy in India from Hindutva, just as the white supremacism of the Trump era was a threat to the US.

major takeaway from the meeting between Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House last week was that the president of the United States saw fit to remind India’s Hindutva leader about the relevance of Gandhi and Gandhism. Biden didn’t just recall Gandhi – killed on January 30, 1948 by Nathuram Godse, a Hindutva Brahmin from Maharashtra – in the abstract. The US president made it a point to tell the world – and Modi, who was seated next to him – that the Mahatma’s “message of non-violence, respect, tolerance matters today maybe more than it ever has”. The US president’s words highlight the fact that his government is not happy with the human rights situation in India under Hindutva rule. Donald Trump, who, as US president, shared many values of Hindutva politics, would never have quoted Gandhi to preach tolerance, non-violence and respect. Perhaps the only time he invoked Gandhi in public was when he put out a fake quote. “First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win,” Trump had tweeted in 2016. When he visited the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad in February 2020, he thanked Modi and forgot to mention Gandhi’s name. And later, even as Delhi was convulsed by anti-Muslim violence, the Washington Post noted that he praised “Modi’s record on religious tolerance”. So now, for President Biden to signal to the world – in Modi’s presence – that his government is not following the principle of tolerance and non-violence is definitely a shocker to the RSS/BJP back home. Though Modi keeps quoting Gandhi – and not Savarkar or Golwalkar – in international forums, the US president’s reference to Gandhi was a diplomatic way of telling his visitor that India has become an intolerant country on many counts. Biden knows what he is talking about. After all, the Democratic Party fought Trump’s intolerance and white supremacism in an open confrontation, during the 2020 election and thereafter on January 6, 2021 at the Capitol Hill. The Biden administration has a large team of Indian origin personnel, including Vice-President Kamala Harris herself. This is where US Vice-President Kamala Harris’s worry about the survival of democracy in both countries in her joint statement with Modi makes global sense. Gandhi was killed not just because he stood for an inclusive democracy in which Muslims would be equal By invoking Gandhi’s emphasis on respect, tolerance and non-violence, the US president is gently reminding citizens. He was engaging with Ambedkar on caste and the world about the series of anti-Gandhian shifts that untouchability reform issues. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of over 40 farmer unions, has called for a ‘Bharat Bandh’ on Monday to mark one year of the passage of the Centre’s three farm laws. The call for the bandh have been supported by major opposition parties including the Congress, BSP, Aam Aadmi Party, Samajwadi Party, Telugu Desam Party, Left parties and Swaraj India. The SKM on Sunday appealed for complete peace during the Bandh and urged all Indians to join the strike. Farmer unions along with their supporters, including trade unions, have made detailed plans to ensure that life remains suspended across the country, except for emergency services on Monday. Normal life was hit as farmers blocked highways, roads and squatted on railway tracks at many places in Punjab and Haryana on Monday in view of a “Bharat Bandh” called by farm unions against three agriculture laws of the Centre. In Punjab, the ruling Congress said it firmly stands by the farm unions’ “Bharat Bandh” call against the three contentious laws.

"Beautiful things can happen after a bad storm," wrote Shilpa. Later, she even shared a popular quote from Chinese philosopher Confucious as she wrote, "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall". She captioned the picture as: "There are always going to be moments that push you to the ground. In times like these, I truly believe that if you fall seven times, make yourself strong enough to be able to stand back up eight times. This rise will demand a lot of courage, grit, will-power, and strength during some of your most difficult moments. But, these qualities will only make you more resilient and robust in this journey called life. Every time that you rise back up, you will come back with renewed determination and motivation to make even the impossible possible”

We are genetically coordinated: Shakti Mohan and Mukti Mohan Work can be fun, especially with someone you have known your whole life. For siblings, Shakti Mohan and Mukti Mohan, getting opportunities to work with each other always act as the cherry on the cake. In a recent conversation with ANI, the ace dancers, who are currently judging Zee Cafe's 'Dance With Me Season 2', shared their experience of working together. "We lived under the same roof and grew up together...we have had different interests... Shakti di completely moved into the dance field whereas I started doing acting. However, it's the dance that is an integral part of our lives. It has made us much closer," Mukti said. Speaking about her bond with Mukti, Shakti quipped about being "genetically coordinated" with her. "We are genetically coordinated. We complement each other very well. It's always amazing to collaborate with Mukti. When we work together we always try our best to make it fun. While shooting for 'Dance With Me', we pulled off each other's legs, we revealed our childhood secrets and whatnot," she shared. Mukti also believes that she coordinates well with her elder sister. "The bond we share is always complementing each other.... Sometimes one person can be dull and the other one quite energetic... but in our case, nothing has ever happened like that I guess it's in our DNA to be coordinated with each other," Mukti laughed.

History may repeat itself, but

there won’t be another Lata Mangeshkar Lata Mangeshkar To call Lata Mangeshkar a historic singer would be an understatement, her enchanting voice was the representation of melody and Indian music

‘You don’t need to put boundaries around yourself to be a singer, if you continue singing, your voice will be fine.’ Basically, this means you should keep singing so that you are always in practice. That’s all I have done my whole life, just sing

egendary Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar, or ‘the nightingale of India’ as she is lovingly called by her admirers, has a lot of devoted fans, celebrities and otherwise, who shower praise on her, and deservedly so. However, Mangeshkar has rarely spoken about her own voice, or her influences. But there have been some occasions where she has made an exception and gotten candid about how and why she sings the way she does. A lot of people believe that Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar is naturally gifted and probably does not have to work on her voice as much as other people. However, that is not true. During an interview, Lata Mangeshkar had revealed that she trains on her voice as much as the next person, but doesn’t necessarily likes to ‘restrict’ herself when it comes to food. “Natural talent is 75 per cent, and the rest of it is hard work and training. People also say you have to take care of what you eat. They say don’t eat chilli, don’t consume pickle, or don’t have curd. But I don’t restrict myself. I have everything. My father used to say, ‘You don’t need to put boundaries around yourself to be a singer, if you continue singing, your voice will be fine.’ Basically, this means you should keep singing so that you are always in practice. That’s all I have done my whole life, just sing,” Mangeshkar said. Further opening up about her early lessons, Lata Mangeshkar said she was also taught by ‘Anil da’ (Anil Biswas) where to leave a gap in singing and where to take a breath so that it all seemed seamless in the end. “Anil da se maine bohot kuch seekha, jaise gaane me saans kaha chorni chahiye aur kaha leni chahiye. Main mic ke saamne tak hoti thi toh logon ko pata bhi nai chalta tha maine kaha saans li aur kaha chori (Anil da taught me a lot. He taught me where to take a breath while singing and where not to. In fact, the whole process had become so seamless that people couldn’t tell how I was doing it even if I happened to be doing it on a mic right in front of them).”

Oh and @shiloshivsuleman is all of those things too! #tribe #community #artist #freespirits #thefearlesscollective,” Abhay Deol wrote in the caption. Tiger Shroff's Heropanti 2 will be very different from his other popular films

T

iger Shroff has an entire roster of exciting movies in his kitty. In fact, it would've be a stretch to call him one of the busiest young stars around, with movies like Baaghi 4, Heropanti 2 and Ganapath lined up, all playing to his strengths, all slated to push his stardom further among the masses, where he already enjoys a crazy fan-following. Coming to Heropanti 2, we were wondering how the makers are going to take the sequel forward and whether it would follow the template of Tiger Shroff 's erstwhile big hits, which have worked so well for him till now. To get more clarity on the topic, BollywoodLife got in touch for an exclusive interview with the film's writer, Rajat Arora, and he graciously revealed some vital details about the eagerly anticipated action movie. Opening up about Heropanti 2, Rajat Arora said, “It's a very modern, very up-to-date film, very different from what we have done so far. We have tried to make it about modern problems and give it modern solutions, whatever is happening around us today. It's not like some of Tiger Shroff 's other popular films (can't reveal the name as he mentioned those films off the record), it's very different from them.” Recently, Tiger's sister, Krishna Shroff, revealed exclusively to us what a cerebral prankster he was in his younger days. “A 100% I was the more mischievous one, though, honestly, I wouldn't play many pranks on him, but he would always mess with my head and tell me that I'm adopted and I genuinely believed him then when I was little. Every time he said it, I would believe him, it would make me sad and I would like, genuinely question it, (go running) to both mom (Ayesha Shroff) and dad (Jackie Shroff). I'd be like, 'Hello...is this something you want to tell me?' He was more of a cerebral prankster, which is way worse. So, yeah, there was a lot of that going on, but as it annoying as it was back then, I look back and laugh because it was all in good fun,” she had said.

‘Govinda Mama doesn’t speak to me also’

T

he Bigg Boss 13 finalist shared that ever since Govinda had a falling out with Govinda, he hasn’t spoken to her also. “There’s a saying that gehun ke sath ghoon bhi pees jata hai (when bulls fight, grass gets trampled). Whatever issue that happened between them, I too have to face the consequence. Chi chi mama and his family doesn’t speak to me anymore,” she shared. On being asked if she had tried to resolve the matter, Arti shared that she has spoken to Krushna about it, “Both parties have said somethings to each other. However, at the end of the day, we are family. I can only hope that the animosity is resolved soon and we can get back to the good times. I did speak to Krushna about it, and now it’s on mama to forgive him.”

Arjun Bijlani had a smooth journey on Khatron Ke Khiladi 11. Having aced most tasks, he was also complimented by host Rohit Shetty for not making a hullabaloo about any of his performance. However, after news of him emerging victorious started doing the rounds, a section of fans even criticised him, saying he won the show as he was a ‘Colors face’. “The intention is always to win. If that spirit is not there, you won’t be able to push yourself. That’s exactly what I did. I honestly don’t know who has won the show but I have performed a lot of stunts that I thought I wouldn’t be able to pull off. I believe more than physical strength, there’s a lot to do with your mental and willpower. And then there is also Rohit Shetty around, pushing you to do better,” Arjun shared. He also shared that when one is in such a competition, there is no room for complacency.

Daniel Craig happy as final Bond movie set to release: ‘Past 18 months have been terrible for everybody’ No Time To Die, the 25th James Bond movie, will finally arrive in theatres this week after an 18-month delay due to the coronavirus pandemic. After an 18-month delay, James Bond film No Time To Die finally begins its cinema rollout this week – a relief for its stars and movie theatre operators. Daniel Craig returns for a final fifth outing as the suave British secret agent, known for his love of fast cars and cool gadgets. The movie was originally scheduled to debut in April 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic forced cinemas to close and impose restrictions on audience numbers. “This past 18 months has been a pretty terrible time for everybody,” Craig told Reuters. “The great thing is we’re here, we got to this point and we can actually now put it into the cinema and … that’s just all gravy from now on.” Costing an estimated USD 200 million to produce, No Time To Die, the 25th Bond film, has been delayed three times since the start of the pandemic. Despite this, its producers have held out to make sure it is released in cinemas. “It was designed and filmed and produced to be in the cinemas, to be a cinema experience,” producer Michael G Wilson told the movie’s official podcast. “So we’re very excited now that it’s going to finally come out, we’re all raring to go.” Bond films are one of Hollywood’s most valuable franchises, with the last two, 2015’s Spectre and 2012’s Skyfall, grossing USD 880 million and more than USD 1 billion respectively globally.

that would provide relief for backlogged high-skilled immigrants. We urge Senate leaders to bring forward each of the components of immigration reform at the earliest, including relief for backlogged high-skilled immigrants. The p arli ament ar i an’s de cision

The legislation passed by the House Judiciary Committee last week would recapture employmentbased green and family-sponsored green cards unused since 1992, allow individuals with approved immigrant petitions to file for adjustment of status early upon payment of a fee, and exempt family-sponsored and employmentbased applicants from numerical limits on visas for an additional fee. Increasing fees is inherently budgetary in nature, and the House Judiciar y-passed provisions would increase federal revenue by billions over the next decade.”

Sikh Temple Vandalized In Possible Picnic Organized By Senior Citizen Dallas Gurukul Hate Crime In Seattle, WA

HiIndia Newsdesk SEATTLE, WA- Police in Washington state are searching for a man they say vandalized a Sikh temple south of Seattle, Washington, in what is being investigated as a possible hate crime, the Associated Press reported. Several portable electronic devices were stolen during the Sept. 17 break-in at the Khalsa Gurmat Center in Federal Way. The building houses religious, educational, and social services for local Sikh residents. The suspect was seen on surveillance video damaging the center’s main hall and prayer area, KOMO-TV reported. No one from the center was present at the time. Investigators were trying to determine if the incident was a hate crime, Federal Way Police Department Cmdr. Kurt Schwan said. According to a statement from the Sikh Coalition on Sept. 20, upon finding the damage, community leaders immediately called the Federal Way Police Department to begin a thorough forensic investigation. According to community members who spoke with officers at the time, authorities are investigating all possible motives— including the possibility that bias could have been a factor in this incident. The Khalsa Gurmat Center has retained

the Sikh Coalition to provide free legal assistance and liaise with all relevant law enforcement agencies and elected officials as the investigation moves forward, the release noted. Accordingly, the Coalition is in touch with the FBI and has reached out to the Federal Way Police Department to confirm that all potential factors, including bias, are being considered in this case. Its team has also reached out to elected officials in Washington to ensure that they are aware of the investigation, and connected Sangat members with several media outlets in an effort to share information that could identify a suspect. “Based on video surveillance, it is clear that the suspect willfully and maliciously vandalized this place of importance to the local Sikh community,” said Amrith Kaur Aakre, Sikh Coalition legal director. “We are glad to hear that the Federal Way Police Department is exploring this case from every angle, and we will continue communicating with Khalsa Gurmat Center leaders, local and federal law enforcement, and elected officials in order to ensure this investigation keeps moving forward.” SALDEF announced Sept. 22 that a GoFundMe account has been created to help the Khalsa Gurmat Center with repairs and security.

Indian American Junior Study Found Rent Across Brooklyn CBP Announces the Opening of Temporary Student Named Future Processing Facility in Laredo, Texas and Manhattan Continue Rise Global Leader by Asian HiIndia Newsdesk HiIndia Newsdesk LAREDO, TX – U.S. Customs Society Northern California NEW YORK, NY — Rent and Border Protection today

Rahul Yates (asiasociety.org photo)

HiIndia Newsdesk LOS ANGELES, CA – Rahul Yates, an Indian American junior at Brentwood School in Los Angeles, Calif., has been selected by Asia Society Northern California as a Future Global Leader, at their recent Education Summit: Teaching for Global Understanding. Over 1,000 educators joined the virtual summit to hear from young leaders about their work helping other youth. Moderated by Wenchi Yu, head of Global Public Policy and Social Impact at VIPKid, Yates participated on a panel with leaders from the Afghan Girls Robotics Team and AAPI Youth Rising. The Asia Society’s purpose is to navigate shared futures for Asia and the world across policy, arts and culture, education, sustainability, business, and technology. The Society fosters insight, encourages engagement, elevates regional voices, informs and educates new audiences, addresses complex – and where necessary – contentious challenges, engages in creative problemsolving, and helps deliver real solutions for the benefit of all.

in Brooklyn and Manhattan is on the way back to prec o r o n av i r u s p a n d e m i c levels, if it isn’t there already, according to a new study. The StreetEasy study found Brooklyn’s typical rent rose for four straight months, reaching $2,650 in August — a high far above the rock-bottom prices seen throughout the pandemic. Manhattan’s median rent rose to $3,100, the study found. “That marks the fifth consecutive month with an increase in rents,” the study states. “However, rents are still $400 lower than their pre-pandemic high of $3,500.” The study is the latest indication that New York City’s brief “renter’s market” during the pandemic is over. Prospective tenants in recent months have found prices returning to “normal” — i.e., high — and options for apartments dwindling.Indeed, rental inventory during August continued to plummet in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Brooklyn’s rentals dropped to 15,341 on the market, compared to 25,914 at the pandemic’s height, according to the study.

announced the opening of a soft-sided facility in Laredo, Texas. Since April 2020, CBP has seen a steady increase in border encounters from the Western Hemisphere due in part to worsening economic conditions brought on by the COVID 19 pandemic and natural disasters affecting the area. The intent of the soft-sided facility is to provide a suitable facility for agents to house and process singles adults, family member units, and noncitizen unaccompanied children arriving at the Southwest Border. This facility will have more accommodations and is significantly larger than an average Border Patrol station detention area. The projected capacity limit for the Laredo soft-sided facility is 500 and will augment station capacities. The facility will be weatherproof, climate-controlled, and is expected to provide ample areas for eating, sleeping, and personal hygiene. The new facility’s design is similar to that of recently constructed soft-sided facilities in other Border Patrol Sectors

Heavy rain is expected in Hyderabad and Bhubaneshwar, that are among host cities for the matches along with Indore, Vizag, Surat, Rajkot and Nagpur. “Owing to the incessant rain and the cyclone alert issued by MET, the BCCI is compelled to postpone the start of the group stage from 28.09.2021 to 30.09.2021,” wrote Dhiraj Malhotra, BCCI General Manager — Game Development — in his letter to the seven host associations.

HiIndia Newsdesk The relationship between tennis players and the media needs to evolve and the sport must also do more to help the younger generation deal with negative comments on social media, Roger Federer said. The issue of players’ mental health came into the spotlight after Japan’s Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open in a row with tournament officials over media duties. Osaka said she had been suffering from depression and anxiety and that interacting with the media had sometimes had a negative impact on her. Federer, who shares the men’s record of 20 major titles with Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic, said the situation needed a rethink.

Former Pakistan skipper and legendary batter Inzamam-ul-Haq has been hospitalised in Lahore after suffering a heart attack on Monday night. Inzy, 51, underwent an emergency angioplasty. According to a Cricket Pakistan report, Inzamam had been complaining of chest pain over the last three days. His initial tests didn’t suggest anything, but the latest tests on Monday reported a minor heart attack for which he had to be taken to hospital for surgery. His agent has informed the media that Inzamam’s condition is now stable but he remains under observation. Shot to global prominence in the 1992 World Cup, Inzy became Pakistan’s highest rungetter in ODI cricket with 11701 runs in 375 matches. In Tests, he has 8829 runs in 119 matches. He has worked as the chief selector in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) from 2016 to 2019, and has also coached Afghanistan. Prayers for his speedy recovery have started pouring in.

T

he brain is a welldesigned machine. If it’s working well—like when it’s reading the words on this page—we don’t notice it at all. At night when we sleep, the brain takes our consciousness offline so it can start its real work: sorting through the day’s information, storing the important parts, and cleaning out the gunk that accumulated. The brain is so well-designed, in fact, that we hardly even notice when it’s breaking down. Like the rest of our organs, the brain undergoes its own aging process. And yet the majority of adults don’t experience major cognitive decline—the kind that severely limits their ability to live independently— over time. That’s because the brain is one of the most resilient organs in the body. Yes, dementia affects about 5.6% of the world’s population, a share that includes the devastating burden of Alzheimer’s disease. But in normal aging, even as parts of the brain shrink and neurons lose connection with each other, those changes only have a minor effect on our daily lives. It may be frustrating to forget where you put your keys, but you can still learn that you’re prone to forgetting them, and pick up the habit of writing notes for yourself. For adults who remain neurologically healthy into their later years, the brain constantly adapts and even thrives under new conditions. But how it pulls it off is a mystery scientists are still trying to solve. The hope is that if researchers can understand how healthy brains stay resilient, they can identify what’s happening when these systems fail—often, leading to dementia.

wild,” Hakun says. When we complete mentally stimulating tasks, we engage neurons all across our brains. Distant neurons talk to each other through axons, which extend, tentacle-like, from the body of one neuron to tickle another with an electrical signal. Scientists refer to the network of axons in our brains as “white matter,” while the bodies of neurons and other cells in the brain are “grey matter.” Starting in the early 2000s, imaging tools like MRIs gave scientists the insight that some cortical shrinking is common in older adults. But they uncovered another change in older brains, too: Imaging showed the structural integrity of the white matter in brains was a little weaker. In order to send electrical signals across brain regions, these neurons had to work harder than they would in a younger brain. “It’s the concept of less wiring, more firing,” says Hakun. This phenomenon is called “hyperactivation,” and it’s not clear that it’s pathological—it could just be a normal part of aging. Practically, hyperactivation across older neurons means that they could get tired out faster than younger neurons. It may be why some healthy older adults experience gradual cognitive decline over time; their neural networks just can’t communicate through axons the way they used to. But other older adults with hyperactivated brains can complete tasks just as well as younger brains. “That’s a functional reorganization effect,” says Hakun. Somehow, the brain has been able to reconfigure itself to carry out the same task despite its changes in white matter. With the advent of the PET scan shortly after the MRI, researchers gained another insight into older brains. PET scans show scientists which proteins are present in different areas of the brain. Normally, brains keep themselves pretty clean, flushing out waste proteins that result from day-to-day cellular activities. But some get a little messier over time—unbeknownst to their owner. Researchers have found that some perfectly healthy individuals have higher levels of a protein called amyloid-beta in their brains than others. It’s not clear why. It could be that their brains are making more amyloid than they should, or that their brains aren’t cleaning it out properly. In either case, extra amyloid usually isn’t great; it can inflame and eventually kill neurons, and it’s one of the main culprits of Alzheimer’s disease. And yet having having higher levels doesn’t necessarily mean a person will go on to develop the disease. Some brains have gotten used to operating at the same level with more amyloid around, or have found ways to cope words, Zelinski says, if you could remember a series of 17 words in one year, it’d take a full decade for you with its accumulation. to only be able to recall 16—a decline most people Which brings up an interesting question: What does wouldn’t even notice. The brain’s plasticity, on average, “resilience” in the brain actually mean? Should scientists say resilient brains are those that seem to be able to keeps our memories delightfully intact. cope with hyperactivation or buildups of protein that Only about 5% to 8% of adults go on to develop should impair their function, but don’t? Or should the dementia, which is characterized as severe cognitive resilient ones be those that are somehow resistant to decline that inhibits everyday function. Scientists still aren’t sure what goes wrong in these cases, and why these changes in the first place? these individuals’ brains are vulnerable in ways that In a way, it doesn’t matter how the brain stays healthy— just that it does however it can. “The brain has a lot of normal, healthy brains are not. The problem, says Jonathan Hakun, a psychologist at redundant systems,” says Zelenski. “So basically, if one system gets knocked out, other parts will compensate Penn State University, is that “nothing’s really entirely over time.” normal.” Scientists aren’t sure how, but it appears that experiences earlier in life that involve connecting more networks of neurons—classroom learning is a classic example— make it easier for brains to adapt to physical changes Advances in neuroimaging have both helped and that occur later in life. Frustratingly, though, not hindered the study of aging in the brain. It turns knowing how these cognitive reserves form and keep out, even when older adults carry out the same tasks the brain resilient means it’s difficult to harness this as younger adults, their brains may be functioning capacity into a treatment for dementia. completely differently. “The functional changes are

Understanding how most brains maintain youthful plasticity could lead scientists to figure out why some don't.

Never Constant The brain’s incredible resilience comes, at least in part, from its plasticity. The rest of the body’s organs carry out roughly the same job from the moment we’re born—albeit on a larger scale as we grow. The heart pumps blood, the liver and kidneys filter, and the stomach churns food.

Not the brain.

Babies’ brains are equipped with billions of neurons, but they have to be warmed up and molded to be useful. Over as many as 25 years, neurons form hundreds of thousands of connections as we learn and make memories. Some of these connections are cropped as they’re not needed; others grow stronger as we learn to reason in the abstract, mitigate impulsive and risky behavior, and plan ahead for the future. Shortly after the brain finishes fully forming, though, it starts to wear down. “Aging is a lifelong biological process,” says Kristin Kennedy, a neuroscientist at the University of Texas at Dallas who studies healthy cognitive aging. There’s some disagreement about exactly when the brain starts to show signs of wear and tear. Some of the limited research available suggests it happens around middle age, some suggests our 30s, and some even in our 20s. But the consensus is that some shrinkage is inevitable and normal. Specifically, the prefrontal cortex and medial lobes—areas involved with high-level functions like planning, emotional processing, learning, and memory—get a little smaller, says Elizabeth Zelinski, a neuroscientist and gerontologist at the University of Southern California. Research hasn’t shown that brain shrinkage causes those mild memory changes, though. And on the whole, the physical changes in the brain barely affect our daily lives. Take, for example, the results of the Long Beach Longitudinal Study, which Zelinski started in 1978 to track the cognitive health of hundreds of healthy adults. One of its findings was that people forget roughly one tenth of a word per year. In other

Sonakshi Sinha enjoys a ‘denim day out’

Smokey-eye look

S The actor loves experimenting with her fashion choices and often opts for fun and casual looks

onakshi Sinha’s fashion choices are fun, chic and eclectic. She loves experimenting with her style, leaving everyone in awe of her. This time, too, the actor made striking appearances in her latest looks. Sonakshi was recently seen wearing an eyecatching printed top from Saaksha & Kinni that featured intricate embroidery and mirror work. She teamed the top with a pair of black trousers. Adding a fun element, she accessorised the look with a pair of oxidised silver earrings, a bracelet and big rings. The actor left her sleek straight hair open in a middle partition and completed the look with subtle eyeshadow, winged eyeliner, well-defined eyebrows, blushed cheeks, nude lip shade and lots of mascara. Prior to this, she sported a rather sporty and fun look as she wore a bomber jacket with red, blue and yellow stripes with a pair of black track pants. She wore her hair in a high ponytail and added the finishing touches with winged eyeliner, mascara laden eyes, blushed and highlighted cheeks and nude lip shade.

Looking for a post-workout healthy snack? Try this!

A good workout should be accompanied by a healthy snack to add to your energy levels and help feel satiated. Experts say adequate nutrition can play a very important role in replenishing the body’s nutrients. This means one should opt for something satiating and with a high-nutrition value. If you are confused about what should make for a postworkout snack, here is a simple recipe that is tasty in equal measure and will provide you with the muchneeded protein to keep your fitness goals on track.

dmit it, you have wanted to try the smokey eye makeup for a while now, but haven’t had the idea of where to start. For most people, makeup seems like a daunting task. But experts say that one has to simply start somewhere to be able to fall in love with it, and try new styles and trends every day. This festive season, as you get ready to impress, keep these things in mind to ace the smokey-eye look which, Monica B, a makeup artist, explains requires “carefully and attentively-crafted strokes”.

#1 Make use of a quality eyeshadow base

It is important you don’t compromise on the quality of the eyeshadow base or primer. In the absence of a primer, you may also use a light coloured concealer.

#2 Remember, less is more

The look is much better and finer when it is created using two to three colours.

#3 Blending is key

1/2 cup – Home made skim milk paneer 1/2 no – Pomegranate Salt and black pepper

You must keep practising your blending skills from time to time.

*In a bowl, add home made skim milk paneer. *Add pomegranate seeds. *Add salt and black pepper

Create a much fuller look using good quality lashes. Alternatively, you may use a quality mascara in case lashes aren’t your thing.

Universal Studios Beijing to open on September 20 Universal Studios’ Beijing resort will officially open on Sept. 20, China’s state broadcaster CCTV said on Monday, citing the theme park. The park, a joint venture between Comcast Corp’s Universal Parks & Resorts and state-owned Beijing Shouhuan Cultural Tourism Investment, will begin trial operations on Sept. 1, CCTV said. Universal Studios announced the development of the resort — the world’s fifth Universal Studios-branded theme park — in 2014, saying at the time it would cost $3.3 billion. Its opening date has been postponed for several months due to the coronavirus pandemic, local media said. In addition to rides, shows and attractions, hotels, and a retail, dining and entertainment complex, it will include experiences designed to reflect China’s cultural heritage, Universal said on its website.

#4 Fuller look is usually better

#5 Loose powder helps avoid fallouts

When you’ve already done your face, don’t forget to pack your under eye with lots of loose powder which helps avoid any fallouts from the eyeshadow.

Follow these steps:

* Make use of an eyeshadow primer for smoother application. It will ensure that your shadow stays longer. Otherwise, you may use a concealer, which is a shade or two lighter than your skin tone. Besides, you may create a transition shade by applying a light coloured shadow on your crease. * Now, apply a gel-based black shadow or gel kajal on the lash line. You may move slowly upwards till the crease and must keep blending so that it doesn’t set or come off. * Further, you may apply a dark tone shadow, preferably dark grey, and keep blending it halfway up to the lid. After that, you must apply kajal on both the upper and lower waterline. * Now, take a dark shadow again and apply it on the lower lash line. You can smudge it outwards with a very fine and thin brush. * Lastly, apply lashes or mascara to add dimension.
