President Biden pledges 500m more vaccine doses to developing world

The World Health Organisation has set a minimum target of 40% vaccine coverage in every country by the end of 2021. But the goal is unlikely to be met.

The US is to donate 500 million more doses of the Pfizer vaccine to developing nations from next year.

President Joe Biden made the pledge at a virtual Covid-19 summit on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, promising an "arsenal of vaccines". The additional jabs will see the total US commitment on vaccine sharing exceed one billion jabs. Experts say some 11 billion doses are required to vaccinate at least 70% of the global population. The World Health Organisation has set a minimum target of 40% vaccine coverage in every country by the end of 2021. But the goal is unlikely to be met. While many high-income countries have now given at least one shot to more than half their populations, only 2% of

people in low-income countries have had their first dose, according to data from the University of Oxford. It's a big pledge but it'll be met with a fair share of scepticism from countries still waiting to vaccinate even 2% of their population. The US had already pledged 580m doses but delivered only 160m of those so far. So what's different now? Well, global production has picked up in the past few months and there are doses available. Rich countries could have 1.2bn spare doses by the end of the year, even if they run booster campaigns, according to science analytics firm Airfinity. 241m of those could go to waste if they're not donated. But these need to be sent very soon. Covax, the WHO-backed scheme to help distribute vaccines fairly, has told the BBC that too many of the donations it's receiving have come in small quantities, at the last minute and with little time left before they expire. That makes their job of getting them to where they are needed very hard. If Biden want to meet this ambitious goal of vaccinating the world by this time next year, that will have to change.

HiIndia Newsdesk Joe Biden has played down the chances of brokering a post-Brexit free trade deal with the UK, as he held talks with Boris Johnson at the White House. Downing Street said its priority was still getting a deal with the US alone.

But the BBC understands that UK ministers are now considering joining an existing North American trade pact instead of pursuing a separate deal. The two leaders also discussed Northern Ireland, climate change and Afghanistan during the 90-minute meeting. Downing Street said they "had agreed to continue working towards a future full free trade agreement". However, Mr Johnson had earlier also downplayed chances of securing a deal with the US before the next general election, saying: "The Americans do negotiate very hard." Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office before the talks, Mr Biden said the pair would discuss trade "a little bit", adding: "We're going to have to work that through."

The US has had tough restrictions on travel in place since early last year. The move answers a major demand from European allies, and means that families and friends separated by the restrictions can be reunited. "It's a happy day - Big Apple, here I come!" French entrepreneur Stephane Le Breton told the Associated Press news agency, as he looked forward to a trip to New York City that had been put on hold because of the restrictions. White House Covid-19 co-ordinator Jeff Zients announced the new rules on Monday, saying: "This is based on individuals rather than a country-based approach, so it's a stronger system." "Most importantly, foreign nationals flying to the US will be required to be fully vaccinated," he said.

Body found in Wyoming is missing 'van life' blogger HiIndia Newsdesk The FBI has confirmed that a body found inside a Wyoming national park on Sunday belongs to the missing "van life" blogger Gabby Petito. A coroner made an initial finding that her death was homicide but gave no indication as to how she died. Ms Petito, 22, was visiting Grand Teton National Park with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, 23. Police are currently searching for Mr Laundrie, whose whereabouts are unknown. He is considered a "person of interest" in the case, but has not been charged with any crime. No details from the post-mortem have been released.

The group's foreign minister made the request in a letter on Monday. A UN committee will rule on the request. The Taliban also nominated their Doha-based spokesperson, Suhail Shaheen, as Afghanistan's UN ambassador. The group, which seized control of Afghanistan last month, said the envoy for the ousted government no longer represented the country. The earthquake happened about 09:15 local time (23:15 GMT) on Wednesday at Mansfield, not far from the Victorian state capital. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said "we have had no reports of serious injuries and that is very good news". The earthquake was also felt in neighbouring South Australia and New South Wales (NSW).It was followed by two aftershocks of 4.0 and 3.1 magnitude.While this is one of Australia's largest earthquakes in recent years, it has not caused significant damage.

In his video remarks at the Global Covid Summit hosted by US President Joe Biden, Modi also said India is ramping up production capacity of existing vaccines and the supply chains of raw materials must be kept open so that vaccine supplies to other countries can be resumed. "We also need to focus on addressing the pandemic's economic effects. To that end, international travel should be made easier, through mutual recognition of vaccine certificates,"

Modi said. His remarks comes on a day when the UK government issued an updated international travel advisory to include AstraZeneca Covishield among the eligible Covid-19 vaccine formulations but kept India out of the 18 countries on

an approved vaccinations list, requiring Indians to follow rules set out for "nonvaccinated" travellers. Despite the inclusion of Covishield, Indian travellers are not exempt from the quarantine rules under the UK's new international travel norms that will come into force from October 4. On Monday, the US had announced a new international travel system under which fully vaccinated individuals would be allowed to enter the country beginning early November. Former US president Donald Trump had imposed a blanket ban on foreign travellers from entering the US at the start of the coronavirus pandemic in early 2020. Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Washington DC early on Thursday morning for his three-day US visit. PM Modi landed at Joint Base Andrews airbase in Washington DC at 3.30 am (IST) on Thursday. PM Modi was received by Indians living in the US who welcomed him by waving the Indian flag. PM Modi thanked the Indian diaspora for the warm welcome. This is PM Modi's first visit to the US in two years, which also saw a change of regime in the country. PM Modi will hold the first inperson bilateral talks with US President Joe Biden at the White House on Friday followed by the Quad leaders' summit. On Thursday, PM Modi will meet the CEOs of five major companies - Qualcomm, Adobe, First Solar, General Atomics and Blackstone. He will then meet Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison at the Willard Hotel around 11 pm (IST). From the airbase, PM Modi's carcade will go to Hotel Willard on Pennsylvania Avenue. After this, PM Modi will leave for the Eisenhower Executive Office Building to meet US Vice President Kamala Harris at around 12:30 pm (IST).

Vaishali had completed GST registration in August 2020 and the couple used its import-export licence for the consignment. A similar consignment, which had arrived for them in June, was arranged to be sent directly to Delhi -- the two were paid ₹ 3 lakh in cash for it, sources said. This was towards the use of their importer-exporter code, coordinating with liners, customs brokers, and transport of the consignment to Delhi. They had taken orders from people in Afghanistan and Iran. Probe agencies suspect a possible TalibanAfghanistan-Pakistan link to the whole episode. Two more such consignments were expected shortly. Investigators say this common practice of using fronts to divert consignments towards non-sensitive routes is called layering. "The importers may not have had any knowledge of the real consignment or its value," sources with investigative agencies said. The Adani Group, meanwhile, has been put under an intense social media glare following the drug seizure, especially by the political rivals of the BJP, which is in power in Gujarat as well as the Centre. The shipments, which originated in China, were being imported by non-medical entities in private residences and apartments in Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, New York, and Texas. “Creating or buying a fake COVID-19 vaccination card is illegal, not to mention dangerous,” said Cincinnati Port Director Richard Gillespie. “Purchasing counterfeit cards supports criminals whose only concern is their bank account, not American security or the health of our citizens. Our officers know that counterfeiters will try to replicate anything to benefit themselves, with no thought to the innocent victims that may suffer from their actions. The men and women of CBP are trained and ready to shut down these scammers and protect our country.” CBP has seized thousands of counterfeit COVID-19 vaccination cards in Chicago, Memphis, Anchorage, and Pittsburgh. “Our officers continue to demonstrate their dedication to our mission by anticipating these unique threats and working around the clock to disrupt crime that threatens our economy and our people,” said Chicago Director of Field Operations LaFonda Sutton-Burke. “CBP understands the heightened importance of safeguarding and securing our borders during this challenging time.”

Seventeen Anganwadi children have been hospitalised after consuming a noon meal that allegedly had a dead lizard in it at Boothamkattikambalimedu in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district on Monday. As per the reports, an Anganwadi worker identified as Jayachitra and helper Amsavalli served the noon meal to the children. Soon, three children complained of nausea and started vomiting, and some of them were found to have discomfort. All 17 children were taken to Cuddalore government hospital in an ambulance. Cuddalore collector K Balasubramaniam visited the hospital and enquired about their health. “We received reports that a lizard was found in one of the plates served to the children. Samples of the

food have been sent to labs for testing. All 17 children who were admitted to the hospital have been discharged today (Tuesday). The collector has ordered the food security officers to probe into this incident and also told them to check the quality of food at Anganwadi centres across the district. Departmental action would be initiated against the workers if they are found guilty,” an official at the Cuddalore district office said. The Puduchattiram police said they were intimated about the incident but haven’t registered a case yet. The Anganwadis which had been closed across the state due to Covid-19 were reopened on September 1.

The problem is that the more we worry about sleep, the higher our stress hormones go – and too much of the stress hormone cortisol, whatever the trigger, disturbs our sleep. We’re left in a state of fight or flight, when we need to be in the opposite state of rest and digest.

How many minutes we spend outside, what and when we eat, what’s happening with our hormones, our habits, emotions, stress and thoughts – all this feeds into the sleep we end up with at night. All of which I was completely oblivious to when battling chronic insomnia for years on end. When my insomnia was at its worst, I’d start my day exhausted, running on empty, and have recurring burn-out days, where an overwhelming fatigue would stop me in my tracks, forcing me to lie down and recharge.

To help balance the body’s chemical cocktail in favour of sleep, it’s invaluable if we lean on science-based stress busters, to bring down our cortisol levels, which the pace, anxiety and overstimulation of modern life is forever increasing. Effective stress busters I’ve found include “forest bathing”, aka walking among trees, as well as reframing my emotions and changing my perception of stress to weaken its hold. I regularly make use of these tactics among others if I feel my stress levels spiking during the day.

4) Know your DIY sleep habit science Bad sleep habits, like any other, can be systematically intercepted and replaced with good ones, once you know how they take shape in the brain. Our bedroom is our sleep habit context, and making certain changes here, behavioural and content-wise, helps to break automatic sleep behaviour. Displacing negative rumination by listing the things you’re grateful for gets measurable results. Another thing you can do is remove sleep-sabotaging cues from your bedroom (eg, work and screens), while loading in sleep-promoting cues (eg, sleep-inducing scents), to help new, desirable sleep habits stick.

5) Listen to a sleep script Habitual thoughts set off a chain reaction that changes your emotions, body chemicals, behaviour, expectations and your sleep. A sleep script, which is a positive affirmation of how well your mind and body are preparing you for sleep, helps with this by gradually shifting your habitual sleep-related thoughts. This taps into the power of self-talk and clinical hypnosis, which are increasingly being explored by scientists, neuroscientists and medics. Also, by listening to a sleep script during the day, you give yourself a moment to pause, creating a window for any stress to subside. I listened to myself reading a short sleep script daily, when sorting out my chronic insomnia and still rely on one as a very potent sleep habit cue.

Among other things, melatonin is also an immune system booster, so allowing your body to release as much of it as possible throughout your evening by avoiding too much bright light the closer you get to bed, is a plus in more ways than just enjoying easier, more restorative sleep.
