At Wednesday’s court appearance, a judge ruled that the suspect, Robert Crimo, would be held without bail and assigned a public lawyer. At a news conference following the hearing, police said investigators had determined that Mr Crimo attempted to dump his phone in Madison, Wisconsin after the Monday morning attack in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park. Police said the gunman told them he had disguised himself as a woman so he could escape Highland Park alongside fleeing residents. In the brief hearing, Assistant State Attorney Ben Dillon said surveillance video showed the suspect leaving the area and dumping a rifle. He then took his mother’s car and drove about 150 miles (240 km) north-west to Madison.

The results are based on population seropositivity, or ”the proportion of people with antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in their blood”, the report explained, adding that the research differentiated between antibodies that occurred naturally as a reaction to being infected by the virus and antibodies created by the vaccine. They were thus able to determine which antibodies were a sign of past infection ”to track the magnitude of the Omicron wave”.

The botched COVID-19 response included ”severely limited testing and a sluggish rollout of vaccines, leading to a virus that’s spreading undetected,” the report said, quoting infectious disease experts and public health advocates. Though the administration has been expanding testing capacity and broadening access to vaccinations, critics say the efforts may be coming too late, it added.

Speaking to an audience of officials and business executives in Thames House, MI5 Director General Ken McCallum and FBI Director Chris Wray said the threat from Chinese spies is paramount in both countries and only continues to grow. McCallum said MI5, the British domestic intelligence service, had sharply expanded its China-focused operations. ”Today we’re running seven times as many investigations as we were in 2018,” he said. ”We plan to grow as much again, while also maintaining significant effort against Russian and Iranian covert threats.” He said Chinese intelligence takes a slow and patient approach to developing sources and gaining access to information, and few of those targeted recognised themselves as such. ”Hostile activity is happening on UK soil right now,” he said. ”By volume, most of what is at risk from Chinese Communist Party aggression is not, so to speak, my stuff. It’s yours -- the world-leading expertise, technology, research and commercial advantage developed and held by people in this room, and others like you.” Wray said China’s threat was a ”complex, enduring and pervasive danger” to both the United States and Britain, as well as other allies.

India’s consumer protection authority has banned hotels and restaurants from levying a service charge on bills. The order came after authorities said there had been an increase in complaints by customers being forced to pay the charge. Restaurants often add a 5% to 15% tip to a customer’s bill under a “service charge” category. But new rules say restaurants can no longer “add service charge by default

Jasmin David from Fallowfield in Manchester is now looking forward to celebrating her 25th wedding anniversary in September after the successful National Health Service (NHS) trial. David’s two-year trial at the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Manchester Clinical Research Facility (CRF) at Christie NHS Foundation Trust involved an experimental medicine combined with Atezolizumab, an immunotherapy drug administered intravenously which she continues to have every three weeks. “I was 15 months down the line after my initial cancer treatment and had almost forgotten about it, but then the cancer returned,” recalls David. “When I was offered the trial, I didn’t know if it would work for me, but I thought that at least I could do something to help others and use my body for the next generation. At first, I had many horrible side effects including headaches and spiking temperatures, so I was in hospital over Christmas and quite poorly. Then thankfully I started to respond well to the treatment,” she said. The previously fit and healthy mother of two grown-up children, worked as a clinical lead at a care home for the elderly. She discovered she had an aggressive triple negative form of breast cancer in November 2017, when she found a lump above the nipple. She underwent six months of chemotherapy and a mastectomy in April 2018, followed by 15 cycles of radiotherapy which cleared her body of cancer. “My Christian faith helped me a lot on this journey and the prayers and support from family and friends gave me strength to face the challenge,” she added.

lobetrotting Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama -- an icon of ahimsa (non-violence) and karuna (compassion) -- turned 87 on Wednesday. As the world celebrates his birthday, IANS looks at the commitments of the globetrotting Tibetan spiritual leader, the global face of the Tibetan exile movement, and his vision and love for India. Besides promoting human values, nonviolence and religious harmony, one of His Holiness’ commitments is to introduce and revive ancient Indian knowledge in modern India through education and with a secular approach, says an aide of the Dalai Lama. The Buddhist scholar, known for his simplicity and typical jovial style and for whom Mahatma Gandhi is the most influential leader of the 20th century for his idea of non-violence, prefers to participate in meetings with religious leaders, and lectures students and businessmen on ethics for the new millennium and the art of happiness. He believes India is the only country with the potential to combine its ancient knowledge with modern education. Talking to a congregation of Tibetans, who organised the long-life offering ceremony of His Holiness here last month, the spiritual leader said, “I’m in my eighties now, but I’m determined that even when I’m in nineties or past one hundred, I will strive to work for Tibet. “I’m in good health and my brain is clear, so I intend to live for at least the next 25 years. The sun will shine once more on Tibet. Freedom will recover.” At the same time, the Dalai Lama, often quoted as saying “although physically I am in India, my mind often goes to Tibet”, said he has retired from political responsibilities and he remains a guest of the government of India here in the Kangra Valley, a location chosen for me by Pandit Nehru, the first Prime Minister. Ac c ord i ng to a C e nt r a l Tib e t an Administration (CTA) post of October 2019, His Holiness, referring to his fourth commitment, remarked he has been focusing on the revival of ancient Indian knowledge in the latter part of his life that mainly promotes ahimsa and karuna. “The world needs more of this knowledge,” he said while addressing students and faculty members of a six-month certificate

In 1959, the occupying Chinese troops suppressed the Tibetan national uprising in Lhasa and forced the Dalai Lama and over 80,000 Tibetans into exile in India and neighbouring countries. On reaching India after a three-week-long treacherous journey, the Dalai Lama first

took up residence for about a year in Mussoorie in Uttarakhand. On March 10, 1960 just before moving to Dharamsala, which also serves as the headquarters of the exiled Tibetan establishment, the Dalai Lama said: “For those of us in exile, I said that our priority must be resettlement and the continuity of our cultural traditions. We, Tibetans, would eventually prevail in regaining freedom for Tibet.” As the world wrestles with instability and crises, India is the only country which has

Commenting on fourth and final commitment of the Dalai Lama on revival of the ancient Indian wisdom, Geshe Ngawang Samten, Vice-Chancellor of Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies in Sarnath, explained His Holiness belief that ancient Indian knowledge is more than a study of religion and its relevance beyond the religious doctrine to contribute significantly to the well being of human beings. “Given every talk and teachings, His Holiness has always lauded the ancient tradition of the Nalanda institution and expressed his earnest pursuit to restore and revive the ancient Indian knowledge,” added Samten. The Nalanda tradition, in particular, considers His Holiness a great potential of making a significant contribution in the fields of philosophy, epistemology, and logic, etc., thus making it a highly intellectual and spiritual tradition. The Dalai Lama, whom Beijing regards as a dangerous “splittist”, or separatist, considers himself a son of India. “All particles in my mind contain thoughts from Nalanda. And it’s Indian ‘dal’ and ‘chapati’ that has built this body. I am mentally and physically a son of India,” the Dalai Lama, recipient of over 150 global awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize and the US Congressional Gold Medal, in his addresses is often quoted as saying. “India and Tibet share a relationship of ‘guru’ (teacher) and ‘chela’ (disciple). When I see some part of my ‘guru’ being corrupt, as a ‘chela’ I feel ashamed.”

ctor Varun Dhawan believes there has been a decline in the number of big-scale Hindi commercial films as Bollywood is largely ”influenced” by western cinema. Dhawan, who has starred in mainstream entertainers such as Main Tera Hero, Dishoom and Judwaa 2, said the film industry is in a transition phase during the pandemic where everyone is unsure about the kind of films that will work at the box office. ”We have stopped making big-scale, masala family entertainers because we are too influenced by the West… To begin with, no one knows what type of films will work. From the biggest producers to trade people, no one does and still every week we will come out and give gyaan

The Raj Mehta-directed comedy, backed by Karan Johar, has raised more than Rs 60 crore at the domestic box office and Rs 100 crore worldwide since its release on June 24.Dhawan said the production house and his Jugjugg Jeeyo co-stars Anil Kapoor and Kiara Advani have been always associated with family entertainers as they too believe in the genre. Evidently then, being part of Shringaar, which marked Soman’s return to a music video after 25 years, was reason to celebrate for the singer. “I used to be a Milind Soman fan-girl while growing up. Made in India was [on] my ‘inspiration mood board’, as an aspiring pop artiste. Hence, sharing the screen with him has definitely been a dream come true. It was fun and dreamy. He has so many experiences to share, and is surely my idol,” says Akasa of the song that also features the works of Raftaar, Aastha Gill, and Vayu.

Her appointment for the leading role in Zee 5’s Saas Bahu Aur Achaar Pvt Ltd, she says, is testimony of sorts that women can find prominent parts well into their 40s. Subhash says, “It is powerful to be a protagonist at this point in my career. To be part of a story that revolves around you is great. [Actors] stress about their physical appearances, and wonder if they will get opportunities to play the protagonist. But, you can be anything, and your story can still be told. You could be of any colour, or size, nothing matters. You only need to have honesty.”

CHICAGO, IL — As Pride month comes to an end, Darren Bailey wasted no time reminding voters that he cannot and will not be a governor for all of Illinois. In an interview Thursday, Bailey said that he “believe[d] in biblical marriage between a man and a woman.” In his concurring opinion on the Roe decision, Justice Clarence Thomas signaled the Supreme Court may revisit marriage equality. At a time of great uncertainty for LGBTQ+ and marginalized communities, Illinoisans need a leader who will proudly fight for their rights––not one who doesn’t even recognize they exist. “Every day Darren Bailey shows us just how extreme he really is,” said JB for Governor Spokeswoman Natalie Edelstein. “Marriage equality is the law of the land and all Americans, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, can exercise their right to marry. Illinois deserves a governor who will not just “say gay,” but who will march alongside them at Pride, protest with them for Black Trans Lives, support queer-owned small businesses, and above all else ensure their rights are protected.

Hindus Upset Over Netflix Anime Over Lord Shiva Depiction HiIndia Newsdesk

NEVADA- Record of Ragnarok, a Netflix anime series which is up for a second season, just released its new trailer. The series which promises to be back on the streaming service in 2023, depicts world gods such as Thor, Amine etc. The series shows humanity in a fight against the God themselves. What has caused ire in some sections of Hindus in the United States, is the depiction of Hindu God – Lord Shiva in the series. Upset Hindus have called the portrayal highly inappropriate.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada, said that Lord Shiva was meant to be worshipped in

temples and home shrines and not to be thrown around loosely or dragged around unnecessarily in anime TV series for mercantile greed. Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, indicated that Hindu gods and goddesses were divine and entertainment companies were welcome to create projects around them showing their true depiction as mentioned in the Hindu scriptures. Inappropriately reimagining Hindu deities/concepts/scriptures/symbols/ icons and redefining Hinduism for commercial or other agenda was not okay as it hurt the feelings of devotees.

Cash Reward Offered After Baby Parrots Stolen From Pet Store In NJ

HiIndia Newsdesk

LODI, NJ- A cash reward is being offered for the safe return of two baby parrots stolen right from their cages in a Bergen County pet store Saturday morning. Surveillance video from NJ Exotic Pets on Route 17 south in Lodi shows two men and one woman approaching several bird cages near the rear of the store before one of the men pulls out

what appears to be a T-shirt, opens a cage, and scoops up a tiny white-bellied caique, placing it into the female accomplice’s bag next to him. The footage shows the man steal another bird the same way before the trio is seen walking out the store. The group got into a black Acura, New York license plate UXH9331, before the vehicle fled south on Route 17, said Tiffany Galluzzo, the bird manager at NJ Exotic Pets. The theft happened around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, when Galluzzo was in another area of the store constructing bird cages. It was about an hour later when she went to check on the birds at the back of the store and noticed the two babies were gone, Galluzzo said.

The white-bellied caiques, a type of parrot, were being weaned off liquid formula and need special care, said Galluzzo. “For them to just be taken right when they’re transitioning into being ready to find their forever home, it just it makes me sick,” she said. An investigation into the theft is ongoing, said Sgt. Dominic Miller with Lodi Police Department. An unspecified cash reward is being offered for safe return of the birds, Galluzzo said. People should keep an eye out for anyone selling birds online or locally at a suspiciously low price, Galuzzo said. For example, the birds stolen on Saturday go for more than $3,400, but might be sold for as low as $500 on the black market, she said. The birds will appear noticeably young, as indicated by the dark spots of feathers on their heads and their dull white bellies — the coloring on adult birds is more vibrant.

Roe v Wade: Women travelling for abortions will be protected - Biden

U

S president Joe Biden has said that women travelling for abortions will be protected by the federal government. Millions of women in the US lost the constitutional right to abortion in June, after the Supreme Court overturned its 50-year-old Roe v Wade decision. The judgement has paved the way for individual states to ban the procedure. They have become local battlegrounds in the fight to overturn or uphold abortion services. At the same time, Google says it is taking steps to remove data from users’ location histories that could be used to prosecute people for visits to US abortion clinics. Women in states where abortion is banned or restricted may be forced to cross state lines to parts of the country where the procedure remains legal. Speaking at a virtual meeting with Democratic state governors, Mr Biden said he believed some US states would attempt to arrest women who crossed state lines for abortion access. “I don’t think people believe that’s going to happen. But it’s going to happen,” he said.

US president Joe Biden has said that women travelling for abortions will be protected by the federal government.

T h e p r e s i d e nt a d d e d t h at t h e government would ensure access to pills that caused abortion in states where it was prohibited. But a federal government intervention may lead to more legal challenges that may go all the way to the Supreme Court, Dr Matthew Wilson, a political science expert at Southern Methodist University, told the BBC, particularly if states believe that the federal government “is actively working to subvert and undermine state laws”. The overturning of Roe v Wade has sent shockwaves throughout the US. It was the Supreme Court ruling that ensured that pregnant women were entitled to an abortion during the first three months of their pregnancy, while allowing for legal restrictions and bans in the second and third trimester. Thirteen states have already severely curtailed or blocked abortion access since the court’s decision. Mr Biden said only Democratic victories in the mid-term elections would give Congress the power to restore federal abortion rights - this will go one way or another after November, he said.

On Sunday, that number totaled 1.01 million, an increase of more than 75 per cent in a span of 16 days, reports Xinhua news agency. The Ministry of Health has said the increases in the infection rate are mostly due to the Omicron-5 sub-variant of the virus. Italy became the fourth country in the world to have more than 1 million active cases, following the US (3.5 million), Germany, (1.5 million), and France (1.4 million), according to data from the World Health Organization. Eight of Italy’s 21 regions and autonomous provinces are considered to be at high risk for the virus, with the remainder considered at moderate risk. The coronavirus transmission rate has been rising at a similar rate: the government reported on July 1 that the rate rose for the fourth consecutive week, reaching 1.30 over the most recent period up from 1.07 a week earlier. A rate above 1.0 means a disease is in a phase of expansion.

ninth-largest in the history of the game. Needing another 119 from their overnight 259-3, Root and Bairstow coasted with incredible ease, taking England to a memorable seven-wicket win, one of their all-time greatest victories. Bairstow’s 114 not out was his second century of the match, while Root ended unbeaten on 142 in an unbroken partnership of 269. They carried England to a new height in what is turning into a spectacular summer under new captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum. The win ensures a series that was postponed last summer is drawn 2-2 but, more importantly, it is the greatest validation to date of England’s ultra-positive approach to Test cricket. Their next series is with South Africa in August, while an entirely different squad under new white-ball captain Jos Buttler plays the first of three T20s against India on Thursday.

England Cricket Trolls Virat Kohli

HiIndia Newsdesk

The Virat Kohli-Jonny Bairstow saga was a huge subplot in the rescheduled fifth Test between England and India. With a crushing defeat to England in the Edgbaston Test, the Indian cricket team has failed to seize the opportunity to register its fourth Test series win in the country. Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root, who have made chasing tricky targets in Test matches fashionable, put the famed Indian pace attack to sword with imposing hundreds as England recorded their highest ever chase of 378 runs with minimum fuss to level the five-match series 2-2. When England were rattled on the fourth afternoon by stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah, the two star batters didn’t waver from their game plan. On the fifth day, England needed just under 20 overs to knock off the remaining 119 runs. After the win, the England Cricket Twitter posted a cheeky Tweet, trolling Virat Kohli. There are two images placed side by side. The first one is of Kohli with his finger on the lips and Bairstow in the frame. The other one is of Kohli hugging Bairstow after the win. The photos tell a story. The third day’s proceedings in the Test match got off to a fiery start as Kohli and Bairstow were involved in a feisty exchange. The cameras caught Kohli first walking up to Bairstow signalling him to stand in his crease and the former India skipper was then seen making hand gestures. He was then seen gesturing Bairstow to stay quiet. After England captain Ben Stokes was then seen having a word with Kohli, the star India batter approached Bairstow with a big smile and gave him what looked like a friendly punch on the arm.

An angelic Nick Kyrgios reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal for seven years when he recovered from a slow start to beat steady American Brandon Nakashima in five sets on Wimbledon’s

Unseeded Chilean Cristian Garin awaits in the last eight after edging out Kyrgios’s compatriot Alex De Minaur, offering Kyrgios a golden opportunity to surpass his quarterfinal run at Wimbledon on his debut in 2014 when he stunned Rafa Nadal.

India’s Sania Mirza and Mate Pavic of Croatia overcame the fourth-seeded pair of Gabriela Dabrowski and John Peers to reach the semi-finals of the mixed doubles event at Wimbledon. The Indo-

Croatian, seeded sixth, won 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in close battle on Court 3. Sania, who is playing her last Wimbledon, reached the mixed doubles semis at Wimbledon for the first time in her career. Team Thackeray Names New Sena Chief Whip Fearing A Revolt By MPs Next HiIndia Newsdesk

New Delhi: The Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena, reduced to a minority in the Maharashtra assembly, has appointed a new Chief Whip for the Lok Sabha, fearing revolt by party MPs. Senior party leader Sanjay Raut wrote a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker today and informed him that Rajan Vichare has been appointed the Chief Whip, replacing Bhawna Gawli. Following a revolt by Eknath Shinde last month, Uddhav Thackeray lost 40 of his 55 MLAs and subsequently, power in the state. Last week, he stepped down from the post of the Chief Minister. A day later, the Shinde faction officially joined hands with the BJP and staked claim to form government, which sailed through the majority test in the assembly on Monday. The new alliance has already picked a Speaker and a Chief Whip in Maharashtra Assembly. They have also appealed to disqualify MLAs from Team Thackeray for defying the Whip during the trust vote in the assembly.

After 8 Incidents In 18 Days, SpiceJet Gets Government Notice On Safety

HiIndia Newsdesk

New Delhi: An unusually high number of incidents involving SpiceJet aircraft has prompted the aviation regulator to seek an explanation from the airline. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation, or DGCA, has pointed out big gaps on

how the airline is functioning, from operating flights with “degraded safety margins”, issues that point at “poor internal safety oversight” to vendors not being paid on time, leading to shortage of spare parts for the SpiceJet fleet. The government’s notice said SpiceJet is operating its fleet on MEL, or Minimum Equipment List, which means the aircraft are considered safe to fly but not all systems are necessarily operational. SpiceJet has been running into losses for the last three years. The carrier incurred a net loss of Rs.316 crore, Rs.3 934 crore and Rs.3 998 crore in 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21, respectively.

Khan said that he would unmask all the characters involved in the alleged regime change conspiracy if pushed against the wall, hinting indirect pressure and threat to the country’s military establishment, which has been one of the targets of PTI’s social media campaigns and has also been openly called out by Khan in public gathering, interviews and statements.“I

However, Khan said that if he, his party and his narrative is pushed against the wall, if his party members are harassed and intimidated, he will be left with no option but to bring what he claims as the truth out for the whole nation to see and decide. Khan’s statement is part of a consistent campaign, in which he claims that his government was ousted through a US-led regime change conspiracy, implemented through his opposition, along with the support of the military establishment, which, despite Khan’s repeated calls, refused to stand by his side.
