US Considering High Level Ukraine Visit In Show Of Solidarity
HiIndia Newsdesk
Washington: Senior US officials are weighing whether to send a top Cabinet level official to Kyiv as a high profile representative in a show of solidarity with Ukraine, a source familiar with the situation said on Wednesday. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken or Defense Secretary Austin Lloyd are potential candidates to pay a surprise visit to Kyiv, the source said. President Joe Biden is unlikely to make the trip, the source said. No final decision has been made on sending an official, the source said. The discussions were first reported by Politico.

oe Biden has accused Russia of carrying out genocide in Ukraine, saying that Vladimir Putin is “trying to wipe out the idea of even being Ukrainian”. Biden has been consistently outspoken in denouncing Russian wholesale killing of Ukrainian civilians, labelling Putin as a “war criminal” in mid-March. Multiple investigations are under way into Russian atrocities in Ukraine, which include the razing of Mariupol and the executions of civilians in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha. The prosecutor at the international criminal court in the Hague opened a

A Black man face-down on the ground was fatally shot in the back of the head by a Michigan police officer, the violent climax of a traffic stop, foot chase and fight over a stun gun, according to videos of the April 4 incident released Wednesday. Patrick Lyoya, 26, was killed outside a house in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The white officer repeatedly ordered Lyoya to “let go” of his Taser, at one point demanding: “Drop the Taser!” Citing a need for transparency, the city’s new police chief, Eric Winstrom, released four videos, including critical footage of the shooting recorded by a passenger in Lyoya’s car.

Proving a case under the 1948 Genocide Convention requires an “intent [by the accused] to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group”. Biden first used the word in passing on Tuesday at a domestic policy event in Iowa about the use of ethanol in petrol. “Your family budget, your ability to fill up your tank, none of it should hinge on whether a dictator declares war and commits genocide half a world away,” he said.

Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is facing pressure from protesters to step down.
Over the past few years, the U.S. has accused China of using “debt diplomacy” to make developing nations across the world more dependent on Beijing. Yet the cases of Sri Lanka an d Pa k i s t an - - b ot h friends of China facing dire financial situations as inflation soars -- show that President Xi Jinping’s government is becoming
more reluctant to pull out the checkbook. China still hasn’t made good on a pledge to re-issue loans totaling $4 billion that Pakistan repaid in late March, and it hasn’t responded to Sri Lanka’s pleas for $2.5 billion in credit support. While China has pledged to help both countries, the more cautious approach reflects both a refining of Xi’s signature Belt and Road Initiative as well as a hesitancy to be seen interfering in messy domestic political situations. Pakistan got a new prime minister on Monday after parliament booted out former cricket star Imran Khan, and Sri Lanka’s leader is facing pressure from protesters to step down.

Johnson was elected partly on promises to curb illegal immigration, but his term has so far been marked by record numbers of Channel crossings. HiIndia Newsdesk
London: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will on Thursday outline his government’s plan to tackle illegal migration and small boat crossings of the Channel, which is expected to include an immigration deal with Rwanda. Johnson, whose future has been thrown into doubt after he received a fine for breaking coronavirus lockdown rules, was elected partly on promises to curb illegal immigration, but his term has so far been marked by record numbers of Channel crossings. He is expected to highlight the danger of such crossings, often made in unseaworthy craft, and the role of smuggling gangs as he makes the case for stronger enforcement of the laws, according to his Downing Street office.

Russia, contesting elections to four UN committees, lost all of them, including one to Ukraine, a verdict being seen as Moscow’s isolation on the global stage. Elections were held in the United Nations Economic and Social Council on Wednesday to fill various vacancies in subsidiary and related bodies. Russia was contesting elections to the Committee on Non-Governmental Organisations, UN Women Executive Board, UNICEF Executive Board and Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

The former prime minister said that those who had hatched the conspiracy were very happy that he was ousted from the government. “I was not dangerous when I was part of the government, but I will be more dangerous now.”“We will not accept an imported government and people have shown what they want by holding demonstrations against the move,” he said. Addressing a massive rally he highlighted that the people of Pakistan will not accept Shehbaz Sharif as his Prime Minister as he has corruption cases worth Rs. 40,000 crore.
HiIndia Newsdesk
In a rapid response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and in the face of Moscow’s warnings to Nato to stop its enlargement, Finland and Sweden are seriously debating applications for membership in the alliance and are widely expected
to join. The accession of both countries would be another example of the counterproductive results of the invasion ordered by Russia’s President, Vladimir V. Putin. Instead of crushing Ukrainian nationalism, he has enhanced it. Instead of weakening the trans-Atlantic alliance, he has solidified it. Instead of dividing Nato and blocking its growth, he has united it. Now, if the invasion has succeeded in anything, it has been to drive formerly nonaligned countries into the arms of Nato.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s office says he will be issued a fine for breaching Covid-19 regulations following allegations of lockdown parties at government offices. Treasury Chief Rishi Sunak will also be fined. Johnson has denied any wrongdoing, but he is alleged to have been at several of the dozen events in his 10 Downing St. office and other government buildings that are being investigated by the police.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai today made it clear that minister KS Eshwarappa, caught in a controversy over his alleged role in the suicide of a contractor, will remain in his cabinet, for now. “The postmortem is done. Let the preliminary inquiry begin. Depending on the preliminary we will decide the next course of action,” he told in an exclusive interview. Mr Eshwarappa, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister in Mr
Bommai’s cabinet, has been accused of demanding a “40% cut money” by civil contractor Santosh Patil, who allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday. The minister’s name came up in the last phone messages of the contractor, who accused him of being “solely responsible” for his death. There have been growing calls for Mr Eshwarappa’s resignation from the opposition Congress, which has accused the BJP and Mr Bommai’s government of shielding the minister.

New Delhi: It is a matter of pride for Indians that most of our Prime Ministers came from very humble families, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today after inaugurating a museum dedicated to 14 Prime Ministers the country has had so far. The Prime Minister started his address with tributes to Babasaheb Ambedkar, whose birth anniversary is being celebrated today. “Babasaheb was the architect of the Constitution that gave us a foundation of the parliamentary process,” he said. He went on to say that every government of Independent India has contributed towards taking the country to the heights it has achieved today. “At a time when the country is celebrating Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, this museum has come as a grand inspiration. In these 75 years, the country has seen many glorious moments. These moments have an incomparable significance in history,” the Prime Minister said, adding that glimpses of many such moments can be seen in the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya.

New Delhi: Imran Khan’s ex-wife Reham Khan, firing her latest shot at the former Pakistan Prime Minister, says he has “comedic talent” and suggests that he could be a good replacement for Navjot Singh Sidhu’s spot in The
Kapil Sharma show. Reham Khan has been unsparingly sarcastic about Imran Khan throughout the political crisis that saw him losing a dramatic no trust vote at midnight and losing power. She has used terms like “delusional” and “miniTrump” for him. Speaking to a Pakistani reporter, she mocked Imran Khan saying he should try his hand at Bollywood. She also appeared to refer to his statement that “no superpower can dictate terms to India”, suggesting that US pressure was behind his sacking. “He has become emotional. I feel India should make space for him, maybe Bollywood. I believe he can give an Oscar-winning performance,” Reham Khan told the reporter, smiling. As a hero or villain, she was asked. “That is up to him. In Bollywood, heroes become villains and villains become more popular. But I feel he also has comedic talent... If nothing else he can go for the vacancy on Kapil Sharma show. He can take Paaji’s (Navjot Sidhu’s) place. As we can see he is also into shero-shairi now,” said the journalist-filmmaker.

Saying that the draft of the policy will be prepared in next two weeks, which is to be discussed with NRIs for further changes, if needed. rank James, 62, is alleged to have donned a construction worker’s helmet, vest and a gas mask before throwing smoke grenades and opening fire. A massive 30-hour manhunt was launched in the wake of the attack. Mr James was taken into custody on Wednesday afternoon in Manhattan after police received a tip-off, they said. “My fellow New Yorkers: we got him,” Mayor Eric Adams said via video during a news conference. Officials said Mr James was the sole suspect in the shooting at Brooklyn’s 36th Street station on Tuesday morning, in which 23 people were wounded, 10 of them from gunfire. The attack renewed calls to address violence in the city’s transit system. Keechant Sewell, New York’s police commissioner, said that Mr James was arrested “without incident”. “There was nowhere left for him to run,” she said. He had nine prior arrests, police said, and he had ties to Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The search for Mr James was complicated by malfunctioning cameras inside the subway station. Deconstructing Rishi Kapoor and Paresh Rawal’s distinct performances, Rishi Kapoor got the emotional send-off, but Paresh Rawal got the better scenes in Sharmaji Namkeen, the delightful new dramedy that could. Rawal stepped in to help finish the film’s remaining portions after Kapoor passed away midway through production. Although not unprecedented, it’s extremely rare for a strategy like this to be used. And it’s rarer for it to work as well as it does here. Sharmaji Namkeen—a feel-good film about a retiree who moonlights as a cook—begins and ends with Rawal’s version of the character. I say ‘version’ because watching these two masters at work is a pleasure, but at least initially, it’s disconcerting. It feels odd to have the movie open with Rawal, especially after we’ve just seen Ranbir Kapoor introduce it as a loving tribute to his dad.

Indian Origin Former McKinney Partner Sentenced To 24 Months HiIndia Newsdesk
NEW YORK, NY – Puneet Dikshit a former partner in McKinsey & Company, has been sentenced to 24 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Colleen McMahon. He had pled guilty on Dec 15, 2021, to one count of securities fraud in connection with his scheme to commit insider trading based on material, nonpublic information regarding the upcoming public announcement that The Goldman Sachs Group – which he and McKinsey were advising – would be acquiring GreenSky, Inc. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said, “Puneet Dikshit must face the consequences of his egregious crime. We will continue to vigorously protect
the integrity of our capital markets and hold accountable those who cheat by trading on inside information. This conviction shows Wall Street and Main Street that corporate advisors who steal information entrusted to them and use it for their personal gain will be caught and prosecuted.”
GreenSky was a publicly traded financial technology company that provided technology to banks and merchants to make loans to consumers for home improvement, solar, healthcare, and other purposes. Goldman Sachs, the investment bank, engaged McKinsey, the management consulting firm, to provide services related to the potential acquisition of GreenSky by Goldman Sachs and the post-acquisition integration of GreenSky. Dikshit was one of the McKinsey partners leading these engagements. In that role, he had access to material nonpublic information, which he misappropriated and, in violation of the duties that he owed to Goldman Sachs and McKinsey, used
to trade GreenSky call options, a press release said. At various times Dikshit purchased and sold relatively small numbers of GreenSky call options, which had expiration dates weeks or months from the time of purchase. However, in the two days before the public announcement that Goldman Sachs would be acquiring GreenSky, he sold all of these longer-dated GreenSky call options and purchased approximately 2,500 out-of-the-money GreenSky call options that were due to expire just a few days later. He realized profits of approximately $450,000. In addition to his prison sentence, Dikshit was ordered to pay forfeiture of $455,017.

South Africa captain Elgar sounds warning to the players who chose IPL over Tests HiIndia Newsdesk
The captain Elgar and the coach Mark Boucher have said that the players made their choice and it remains to be seen if they are selected again for South Africa. “I don’t know if those guys are going to be selected again; that’s out of my hands,” Dean Elgar, South Africa’s captain, has sounded a warning to the players who chose IPL over the Test series against Bangladesh. South Africa won both the Tests convincingly in the absence of these players to win the series 2-0. South Africa lost the ODI series to Bangladesh and won the Test and ODI series against India prior to that. “If you’re playing good cricket and the results are going your way, it’s always going to ease the burden of captaincy. The last year has been extremely testing off the field, but I have an amazing core of players around me who understand me as a character and respect me as a player and a person. They understand Dussen, and Aiden Markram who chose the kind of cricket I want to play. Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was on Monday voted as the ICC ‘Men’s Player of the Month’ for March, while Australian opener Rachael Haynes bagged the honour among women. Azam scooped the honour following a number of thrilling batting displays in Pakistan’s multiformat series against Australia. Haynes bagged the honour on the back of a formidable set of displays on the road to Australia’s seventh ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup title. Scoring 429 priceless runs in eight matches at an average of 61.28, her extraordinary feats at the top of the order proved crucial to her side’s unbeaten run to the final, where they subsequently overcame England to cap a thrilling tournament. “Rachael Haynes has displayed tremendous consistency for Australia,” remarked former Pakistan skipper Sana Mir.

Dipika Pallikal’s gifts for her twins – World Doubles gold medals

Tennis great Boris Becker could face a jail sentence after being found guilty on Friday of illicitly moving thousands of dollars from a bank account after he was declared bankrupt. A jury at London’s Southwark Crown Court convicted Becker on four charges under the Insolvency Act, including removal of property, concealing debt and two counts of failing to disclose estate. The German star was found to have transferred hundreds of thousands of pounds (dollars) after his June 2017 bankruptcy from his business account to other accounts, including those of his ex-wife Barbara and estranged wife Sharlely “Lilly” Becker.

After motherhood high, Dipika is back on the squash court, and warmed up for CWG with twin gold at World Doubles. HiIndia Newsdesk
Post the baby glow and birth of her twin sons Kabir and Zian, squash star Dipika Pallikal Karthik ached for the glow that comes from stomping on a competitive court. “It was important
that I made the aura felt before the Commonwealth Games. Everyone has to fear you as a rival. It can’t just be that she’s back, but that she’s playing her best squash,” Dipika says, after returning from winning two gold medals at squash’s World Doubles Championship. The 30-year-old picked the doubles crown with long-time friend and peer Joshna Chinappa, and the mixed doubles title with childhood friend, training partner and now brother-in-law, Saurav Ghosal. There was a three-year gap in her squash career, some of which she prefers stays private as it’s deeply personal, and some that she happily narrates as part of her comeback. But for someone who would saunter in at Chennai’s SDAT squash courts as an 11-year-old, go straight to the glass door, shrug off her jacket, tighten her ponytail, lace up and get smacking the rubbery bouncer off the walls, Dipika insists the tournament week and what played out on the courts in Glasgow was the culmination of a well-plotted return.

Mumbai Indians, the most successful franchise of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has been struggling to find form in the ongoing season of the IPL. With four consecutive losses, MI languish at the bottom of the table. However, Mumbai Indians, director of cricket Zaheer Khan, backed his side to go out and freely express themselves. “Whatever the result is, we are going to protect our environment. Win or lose we are in it together. All of us have seen ups and downs but how we carry ourselves is important,” said Khan. “Go with the game and back your instincts. Today it was Surya who stood up for us but we as a team can help him by backing him. That is how one becomes two, then two becomes three. But what is important is to keep the enjoyment in our control. Keep pushing, chin up, get up and do it again,” he added.

Several Indian states have passed or are considering anticonversion laws that challenge the constitutionally protected right to freedom of belief. In 2019, the government passed a citizenship law that critics said undermined India’s secular constitution by excluding Muslim migrants from neighbouring countries. The law was meant to grant Indian nationality to Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Jains, Parsis and Sikhs who fled Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan before 2015. In the same year, it revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in a bid to fully integrate the Muslim-majority region with the rest of the country.

Healthy habits to inculcate right now The 20s are the most crucial years, when many people prepare for a secure future; it is a ‘self-improvement’ phase
Lady Gaga’s ‘beautiful’ dress was made by her sister During the 64th Annual Grammy Awards held last Sunday, Lady Gaga, who won her 13th Grammy for Just Dance, sported a trio of equally classy and elegant looks. One of her outfits was, in fact, made by sister Natalie Germanotta’s New York-based brand Topo Studio. The crepe back satin gown in custom dyed silk velvet featured a stunning capelet that Gaga posed in with her Grammy in hand. She also gave her sister’s brand a shoutout on her caption, thanking her for “hand making this beautiful dress for me.”

ctor and musician Shruti Haasan has a goth-chic sense of style and often experiments even with her signature looks. Often clad in black outfits, Shruti loves her dark lipsticks, spiked necklaces, and all things punk. But, the actor also knows when to surprise her fans with a minimal and elegant traditional outfit. And she did the same with her latest OOTD. Shruti, who is in Guwahati to celebrate Rongali Bihu with her beau Shantanu Hazarika, dressed for an event in a gorgeous black traditional Assamese sari. Called pator sari, it featured traditional motifs, and she paired it with a black full sleeve blouse with a tie-up on the neck. She styled the look with a beautiful polki hair band, traditional golden jhumkas, bangles and rings. Her makeup was minimal with a lined, smokey eye and nude lips, and she left her long, wavy hair open.
Why eating the right food combo is important ‘It is definitely not satisfying for an artiste to perform in front of cameras and laptops’
What is the most challenging thing about being a musician, especially an independent artist in India?
It would be being heard, and having a lot less opportunities compared to Bollywood-music playing bands and artistes. Indian audience is queued on to something that they’re already familiar with, and independent music takes years before it gets popular. For example, my songs Lokada kalaji and Mysore se aayi are being played on stage since the last 30 years, and its only now that people recognise it. So, it takes a long gestation period and constant bombardment of the song to get them heard.
Jot down your thoughts
It is time for self-discovery, and in this process, lots of people start juggling with their thoughts which consume an immense amount of energy. Jotting down the self-doubt, and inner thoughts on a piece of paper can save a lot of energy and give clarity.
Be grateful
Be grateful for what you have. Showing gratitude towards certain things helps you stay grounded. Practising this on a regular basis will lower your stress levels and improve your interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships.
Clean your own mess
Start by making your own bed in the morning. It gives you the feeling of self-accomplishment. Cleaning your room, and hanging the clothes correctly gives a certain amount of confidence, and satisfaction.
Raghu Dixit
One of the most well-known contemporary folk musicians in India, Raghu Dixit needs no introduction. His soulful melodies, as a playback singer and also an independent artiste — from Ambar to Khidki and Darmiyaan — feature on most playlists.

Why?
Start meditating
Mediation is one of the best things you can do if moving forward peacefully is a goal in your life. Just simple breathing exercises bring a lot of positive change. It is said if a person wants to control their mind and emotions then first they should learn to control their breath.
Interact with new people
We all can learn so much about life, career, and people just by having a normal conversation with somebody who is not known to us. So keep interacting with people who are not of your age, are way more experienced. This will make you aware of the things you don’t know.

‘Want Peace With India, but Not Possible Until Kashmir Issue Is Resolved’: Pakistan New PM
I
slamabad: Soon after he was elected as Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif in his inaugural speech on Monday raised the issue of abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir and alleged that the people in the Valley were bleeding and Pakistan will provide them with “diplomatic and moral support” besides raising the matter at every international forum. The 70-year-old leader, who replaced Imran Khan after a high voltage political tussle, said he wanted good relations with India, but it cannot be achieved without the resolution of the Kashmir issue. He said that “neighbours are not a matter of choice, it is something we have to live with and unfortunately Pakistan’s ties with India have never been good since its inception”. He attacked Khan for not making “serious and diplomatic efforts” when India abrogated Article 370 in August 2019. “When the forceful encroachment was done in August 2019 and Article 370 was abrogated, what serious efforts did we make…what serious diplomacy did we try…Kashmiris’ blood is flowing on roads of Kashmir and the Kashmir Valley is red with their blood,” said Shehbaz, the younger brother of former three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif. He expressed desire for better ties but with India while linking it with the Kashmir issue. “We want good ties with India but durable peace is not possible until the Kashmir dispute is resolved,” he said, adding that Pakistan would continue to provide political, diplomatic and moral support to the people of Kashmir. “We will raise voice for Kashmiris brothers and sisters at every forum. We will give them diplomatic and moral support,” he added. Shehbaz also asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to come forward to address the Kashmir issue so that the two countries could concentrate on tackling poverty, unemployment, shortage of medicines and other issues. “Why do we want our coming generations to suffer. Come, let’s resolve the Kashmir issue in line with UN resolutions and Kashmiris’ expectations, so that we are able to end poverty on both sides of the border,” he added. Ties between India and Pakistan nose-dived after a terror attack on the Pathankot Air Force base in 2016 by terror groups based in the neighbouring country. Subsequent attacks, including one on an Indian Army camp in Uri, further deteriorated the relationship.
Congratulations, India desires peace in region free of terror: PM Modi
I
ndia desires peace and stability in a region free of terror, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said as he led the nation and the world in congratulating Pakistan’s 23rd Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The tweet, seen as a sharp retort to Shehbaz Sharif ’s remarks on Kashmir, comes minutes after the new prime minister took oath. “Congratulations to H. E. Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on his election as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. India desires peace and stability in a region free of terror, so that we can focus on our development challenges and ensure the well-being and prosperity of our people,” PM Modi tweeted. Shehbaz Sharif has been raising the Kashmir issue - which India has categorically called an internal matter. Earlier today, in his inaugural speech after being elected as the new prime minister, Sharif raised the issue of abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir in his inaugural speech today, alleging that the people in the Valley are bleeding, as he stressed that Pakistan will provide them with “diplomatic and moral support”, besides raising the matter at every international forums.”

“Had A Case Yesterday”: India Raises Concerns About Human Rights In US HiIndia Newsdesk

n a sharp response to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s recent comments on a “rise in human rights abuses” in India, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has said “people” are entitled to have views about India’s policies but at the same time, New Delhi is “equally entitled” to have views about them. The Foreign Minister, in his first official reaction to the US statements on Wednesday, also appeared to refer to the hate attack on two Sikh men in New York. Mr Blinken had said: “We regularly engage with our Indian partners on these shared values (of human rights) and to that end, we are monitoring some recent concerning developments in India including a rise in human rights abuses by some government, police and prison officials”. The US State Department, in its 2021 country report on Human Rights Practices published yesterday, had said that there were “credible reports” of human rights issues, including “extrajudicial killings by the government or its agents” in India. Mr Jaishankar’s rebuttal has been seen in the context of incidents of hate crimes against the Indian community in the US. These incidents have increased by “200% in recent years”, according to NY State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar, the first Punjabi American ever elected to the New York State Office.
