Biden’s trip to South Korea and Japan has been scheduled for May 20 to 24. “This trip will advance the BidenHarris Administration’s rock-solid commitment to a free and open IndoPacific,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on Wednesday here.
Biden’s trip to South Korea and Japan has been scheduled for May 20 to 24.
Biden will also hold bilateral meetings with South Korea President Yoon Suk Yeol and Prime Minister Kishida Fumio of Japan. “The leaders will discuss opportunities to deepen our vital security relationships, enhance economic ties and expand our close cooperation to deliver practical results. We look forward to having further details to share about this trip soon,” Psaki said.

The crew includes Jessica Watkins, who becomes the first black woman to serve on an extended mission on the International Space Station (ISS). Speaking outside the Reed home in Texas, his mother said she felt “almost as good as the day he was born”. Reed is currently on his way back to the US, where he is expected to spend several days in hospital. President Joe Biden said he had been “delighted” to share the news of Mr Reed’s return with his parents in a phone call. “The negotiations that allowed us to bring Trevor home required difficult decisions that I do not take lightly,” he said.
India Developed Ties With Russia As US Couldn’t Do It Earlier: Antony Blinken
HiIndia Newsdesk
Washington: Asserting that now there is a growing strategic convergence between the United States and India, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said New Delhi built its partnership with Moscow out of necessity as the US was
not in a position to do that earlier. “In the case of India, there is a relationship that goes back decades. And Russia, for India, was out of necessity a partner of choice when we were not in a position to be a partner,” he told lawmakers on Wednesday. “Now, we are investing in that effort. I think there is a growing strategic convergence between the United States and India,” Blinken said. “And of course, China is a big part of that,” Blinken said in response to a question from Senator William Hagerty during a Congressional hearing by the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations.
US Judge Rejects Elon Musk’s Bid To End Supervision Of 2018 Tesla Tweets HiIndia Newsdesk
New York: Twitter’s new buyer Elon Musk still must have his tweets about his electric car company Tesla pre-approved after a US judge on Wednesday rejected an appeal to free him from oversight. Musk last month filed a motion to overturn Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) restrictions imposed following his 2018 tweet, in which he said he had acquired funding to take Tesla private, but did not provide proof or file paperwork with the securities regulator. The tweet, which caused share prices to fluctuate wildly, was ruled to be “false
and misleading” and shareholders have accused Tesla of securities fraud. The SEC also charged Musk with fraud and ordered him to step down as chair of Tesla’s board of directors, pay a $20 million fine and, after another unfortunate tweet in early 2019, demanded his tweets directly related to business of the company be preapproved by a competent lawyer. Musk said he was forced to agree to the deal, and denies lying to shareholders. However, “Musk’s claim that he was the victim of economic duress is wholly unpersuasive,” Judge Lewis Liman wrote in his ruling.
USA News in Brief Donald Trump Testifies That He Feared Being Hit By “Very Dangerous” Fruit
HiIndia Newsdesk
New York: Ex-president Donald Trump testified under oath that he feared protesters would pelt him with “very dangerous” fruit like pineapples, tomatoes, and bananas saying: “You can get killed with those things.” The comments were revealed in court documents made public Tuesday which included a transcript of a deposition Trump gave last October as part of an ongoing civil lawsuit in New York. The case was brought by several activists of Mexican descent who say they were attacked by his security guards outside Trump Tower in Manhattan in 2015.“I wanted to have people be ready because we were put on alert that they were going to do fruit,” Trump said under questioning by attorney Benjamin Dictor.
Joe Biden says Xi Jinping once told him Quad was against China
US President Joe Biden on Friday said his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping once told him that he was strengthening Quad against China. “I indicated to Xi Jinping that I was going to pull together the Quad: Australia, India, Japan, and the United States. He said, ‘You’re just doing that to affect us.’ I said, ‘No, it’s because we’re trying to put together those folks who have an opportunity to work together in the Indo-Pacific’,” Biden said during a party fundraiser event at a private residence in Seattle. “The point being that one of the things that the autocrats fear the most — and India has its own problems; all those countries have their own problems — is the notion that somehow we can work together in concert and contrary to what are essentially dictatorships, which a lot of countries have become, particularly not only China but Russia and many other countries… the Philippines” he said.

Ukraine war: Putin warns against foreign intervention
World News in Brief Aung Suu Kyi sentenced to 5 years in jail
Any country trying to intervene in the Ukraine war will face a “lightning-fast” response, Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned.

to make sure Ukraine defeats Russia. Western officials say Russia is being hampered in its efforts in the east. Last week, Russia launched a major offensive to seize the Donbas region after withdrawing from areas around the capital Kyiv. But according to one official, Russian forces are “finding it difficult to overcome the staunch Ukrainian resistance and they are suffering losses”. In another development, the European Commission has accused Russia of blackmail after Moscow cut off gas

Russia’s decision to cut off gas exports to Poland and Bulgaria is an “instrument of blackmail”, the EU says.European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said the move showed Russia’s “unreliability” as a supplier. But the Kremlin said Russia had been forced into the action by the “unfriendly steps” of Western nations.Europe depends on Russia for more than a third of its gas needs and state energy giant Gazprom holds a monopoly on pipeline supplies in Russia. While many European countries have taken steps to wean themselves of Russian oil imports since it invaded Ukraine, Russia has continued to supply large amount of gas to many European countries.
Gaza farmer finds 4,500-year-old statue of Canaanite goddess HiIndia Newsdesk
A stone statue of an ancient goddess of beauty, love and war has been found in the Gaza Strip. Palestinian archaeologists say that the head of the Canaanite deity, Anat, dates back 4,500 years to the late Bronze Age. The discovery was made by a farmer digging his land in Khan Younis, in the south of the strip. On social media, some Gazans are making wry comments suggesting the goddess’s association with war seems apt. In recent years, they have seen a series of devastating flare-ups in the conflict between Israel and militant groups in Gaza, which is governed by Hamas.

The Kremlin said Russia had been forced into the action by the “unfriendly steps” of Western nations. Gazprom’s cut-off follows Poland and Bulgaria’s refusal to pay for gas in Russian roubles - a demand made by President Vladimir Putin in March, which was designed to shore up the faltering currency battered by Western sanctions.
UK Foreign Secretary says victory for Ukraine is a “strategic imperative” for the West HiIndia Newsdesk
Russian forces must be pushed out of “the whole of Ukraine”, the Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has said. In a keynote speech in London, Ms Truss said victory for Ukraine was now a “strategic imperative” for the West. This amounts to the clearest statement yet of Britain’s war aims which have, until now, been limited to stating that President Putin’s invasion of Ukraine “must fail and be seen to fail”.
She said Western allies must “double down” in their support for Ukraine. “We will keep going further and faster,” Ms Truss said, “to push Russia out of the whole of Ukraine.” This implies that Russian forces must leave not just the territory occupied in recent weeks since their invasion on 24 February but also those areas they invaded and annexed eight years ago, such as Crimea in the south and parts of the eastern Donbas region. The foreign secretary’s latest remarks in a speech at Mansion House in London reflect the desire by some in the West to aim high, so that Ukraine enters any possible future talks about a political settlement to the conflict with the best negotiating hand possible.
Four European Gas Buyers Made Ruble Payments To Russia Ten European companies have already opened the accounts at Gazprombank needed to meet Russia’s payment demands, the person said. HiIndia Newsdesk
Four European gas buyers have already paid for supplies in rubles as President Vladimir Putin demanded, according to a person close to Russian gas giant Gazprom PJSC. Even if the other buyers reject the Kremlin’s terms, more cutoffs after the halt in gas flows to Poland and Bulgaria Wednesday aren’t likely until the second
half of May when the next payments are due, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential matters. Ten European companies have already opened the accounts at Gazprombank needed to meet Russia’s payment demands, the person said.

A court in military-ruled Myanmar sentenced deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi to five years in jail on Wednesday after finding her guilty in the first of 11 corruption cases she faces, a source with knowledge of the proceedings said. The Nobel laureate and figurehead of Myanmar’s Opposition to military rule is charged with at least 18 offences carrying combined maximum jail terms of nearly 190 years, all but killing off any chance of a political comeback.
Germany can weather ‘end to Russia gas’
HiIndia Newsdesk
After Russia cut off supplies of natural gas to Bulgaria and Poland on Wednesday, a top German official said the flow of Russian gas to Germany remained steady, while adding that the country could live off existing reserves until at least the winter.“In order to get through the winter without Russian gas, further work at full speed is needed,” said the official, Robert Habeck, who is Germany’s economic minister and vice-chancellor. He made the comments during a news conference at which he presented a new set of subsidies designed to help Germans offset higher energy costs.
Denial of bail is silencing Hong Kong’s democrats
China’s national security law imposed on Hong Kong nearly two years ago has completely changed the territory’s political landscape.Free speech has been curtailed, civil society groups have closed down and only Beijing-approved candidates can stand in elections. The law has also upended several longstanding legal principles - with one of the most radical changes relating to bail.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi
New Delhi: Stung by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s put-down on live telecast yesterday, over states not cutting taxes to bring down petrol and diesel prices, opposition Chief Ministers are pushing back using sharp words in an escalating row with the Centre. Flagging higher fuel prices in many opposition-ruled states during a meeting on Covid, PM Modi called it “injustice” and urged the Chief Ministers to reduce VAT (Value Added Tax) on petrol and diesel to help the common
man. He said many states had not agreed to the Centre’s call for reducing VAT after his government slashed excise duties in November and named Maharashtra, West Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu. Reacting to the furious backlash from opposition Chief Ministers, Union Minister Hardeep Puri sneered that petrol would be cheaper if opposition states reduced taxes on fuel instead of liquor.
Heat Wave Warning For 5 States, 45 Degrees In Some Parts This year, Northwest India recorded the hottest March in 122 years, with an average maximum temperature surpassing the previous record of 30.67 degrees Celsius in 2004. HiIndia Newsdesk
New Delhi: The weather department has announced heat wave warning for at least five states as India witnesses its “hottest summer ever” with large parts
of the country reporting temperatures around 45 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has pre dic te d he at wave conditions in large parts of the country for at least the next five days. “Rise by

A heat wave warning has been announced for Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, UP and Odisha as parts of these state record temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius. For nine weeks, President Joe Biden and the Western allies have emphasised the need to keep the war for Ukraine inside Ukraine. Now, the fear in Washington and European capitals is that the conflict may soon escalate into a wider war — spreading to neighbouring states, to cyberspace and to Nato countries suddenly facing a Russian cutoff of gas. Over the long term, such an expansion
could evolve into a more direct conflict between Washington and Moscow reminiscent of the Cold War, as each seeks to sap the other’s power. The Russians have cut off gas shipments to Poland and Bulgaria, which joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation after the collapse of the Soviet Union; Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission. “Nobody wants to see this war escalate any more than it already has,” John Kirby, the Pentagon spokesman, said

“Sickening To See Violence Against Muslims Celebrated”: Padma Lakshmi
Mumbai: Asserting that there is no threat to Hinduism in India or anywhere else, Indian American supermodel and author Padma Lakshmi on Wednesday said people of all faiths should be able to live peacefully in “this ancient, vast land”. The 51-year-old, who posted a series of tweets, said there is “widespread antiMuslim” rhetoric in the country and hoped Hindus don’t succumb to “this fear-mongering” and “propaganda”. Tagging news articles from international publications like The Guardian and Los Angeles Times on Delhi’s Jahangirpuri clash between two communities during a Hanuman Jayanti procession and the violence in Khargone city of Madhya Pradesh during Ram Navami celebrations earlier this month, Lakshmi said “true spirituality” has no place for hatred.

Dominick Krankall was rushed to the burn unit at Bridgeport Hospital, where the doctors said he is expected to recover. A six-year-old boy in the United States’ Connecticut has been left with severe burn injuries and bandages after an attack by a young neighbour, his family said. The boy, Dominick Krankall, was playing in his backyard on Sunday when the incident took place, a report in the NBC said. The attacker, an eight-yearold boy, poured gasoline on a tennis ball, lit it on fire and threw it at the boy’s face after luring him. “As soon as he walked down the stairs, the bully called his name and lured him over around the corner, and in a matter of seconds he came back around the corner screaming, saying ‘Mommy, they lit me on fire,’” the victim’s sister Kayla Deegan told NBC. She said the “bully” got into a shed on the property, and he somehow gained access to some gasoline and lighters.
“Finance Ministry Embarrassed PM On Day He...”: P Chidambaram
HiIndia Newsdesk
New Delhi: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Thursday took a dig at the Centre over the Rs. 78,704 crore it owes to the states in GST compensation, saying it would be interesting to know why the Finance Ministry “embarrassed” Prime Minister Narendra Modi by putting out the information on the day he chose to “admonish” the states. The Finance Ministry on Wednesday said the Centre has already released eight months of GST compensation dues to the states for the fiscal ended March 2022 and Rs. 78,704 crore is pending due to inadequate balance in the cess fund. ”The amount owed is actually more. If you add the amounts that the states claim are owed to them, the total amount may be bigger. Only the Controller of Government Accounts (CGA) can certify the correct amount,” the former finance minister said on Twitter.

It had requested the government to standardize the tariff on electric cars to 40 per cent irrespective of the customs value, and withdraw the social welfare surcharge of 10 per cent on electric cars. It had stated that these changes would boost the development of the Indian EV ecosystem and the company will make significant direct investments in sales, service, and charging infrastructure; and significantly increase procurement from India for its global operations. The company had argued that these proposals would not have any negative impact on the Indian automotive market as no Indian OEM currently produces a car (EV or ICE) with an ex-factory price above $40,000 (around Rs 30.6 lakh) and only 1 to 2 per cent of cars sold in India (EV or ICE) have ex-factory/customs value above $40,000.

‘USCIRF report on religious freedom biased against India’: group of eminent Indian-Americans The USCIRF’s report on India is biased through selection and omissions fuelled by anti-India campaigns in the United States
HiIndia Newsdesk
Washington: A group of eminent IndianAmericans expressed disappointment over the latest annual report of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom and alleged that it is biased against India. The report recommended to the Biden Administration to designate India, China, Pakistan, Afghanistan and 11 other nations as “country of particular concern” in the context of status of religious freedom. The recommendations are not binding on the US government. “The USCIRF’s report on India is biased through selection and omissions fuelled by anti-India campaigns in the United States,” alleged Khanderao Kand from the Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS), a US-based policy research and awareness institution. Instead of recognising that India’s

Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is an act that gives citizenship to refugees who were religiously persecuted from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, it’s wrongly projected as an act to take away citizenship, he said. Similarly, the report failed to mention that the National Register of Citizenship (NRC), which is common in the most democratic countries, is being
implemented as per the ruling of India’s court, Kand said. “It is disappointing that the report only quoted Muslims from Kashmir but ignored Kashmiri Pandit Hindus who are victims of their terrorism being forced out and murdered. It failed to mention that the situation normalised after the abolition of 370,” said Jeevan Zutshi, founder member of the Global Kashmiri Pandit Diaspora (GKPD). “The report is a contradiction to India’s humanitarian credentials as 90 per cent of my extended family and most of the Indigenous people from Bangladesh are going to India to save their lives from Jihadis,” said Priya Saha, US-based editor of Dalit Kantha and Bangladesh Journal of Minority.

New York: In a tragic incident, an 18-year-old Indian high school student drowned in a pond in the US state of New Jersey after he went into the frigid water to retrieve a soccer ball for children playing nearby, according to media reports. Clinten G Ajit, who hailed from Niranam in Kerala, went into Hardcastle Pond in New Milford on Friday around 7 pm to retrieve the soccer ball and apparently drowned after he suddenly went underwater, northjersy.com, a digital news content provider, reported. However NJ.com, another digital newspaper quoting police, said emergency officers responded to a call at around 7:15 pm that someone went swimming in the pond and did not return. First responders recovered Ajit’s body in about three hours. “The water went up to his waist. Then it went up to his neck. Then he had his whole, full body in the water,” CBS news channel quoted 10-year-old Sam Rueda, who saw the tragedy unfold with his family, as saying. “After he put his hands down, that was the last we ever saw of him. Then his friends started to panic,” Sam said. Borough police confirmed Ajit’s identity late on Saturday afternoon. t wasn’t Telangana. It wasn’t ideolog y. Political strategist Prashant Kishor’s latest round of talks with the Congress on changing the 137-year-old party’s decrepit fortunes fell through on account of the most obvious of stalemates, sources have told. While the 45-year-old wanted a free hand to bring in sweeping changes and play the role of a disruptor, the Congress leadership ultimately found itself wary of a complete overhaul, preferring incremental changes instead, sources in the Congress said. However, unlike last year when similar talks hit a wall, this time, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi kept senior party leaders in the loop, acted on their advice and has decided to hold them accountable for losses and victories in future elections, they added. They firmly rejected suggestions that a deal fizzled because of Prashant Kishor’s association with other parties like the Telangana Rashtra Samithi led by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao or “KCR” which signed up his political consultancy group I-PAC just two days ago for next year’s elections. Neither was his past of helping everyone from the BJP to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee win elections a sticking point, a leader said. “The difference was on how to execute the revival. PK wanted to be a disruptor. The party wanted incremental changes,” he said. The Congress was reluctant to give its reins to an outsider from the get-go and Prashant Kishor was hesitant about his

Why Congress-Prashant Kishor Talks Failed Again: The Inside Scoop There was a meeting between Prashant Kishor and the leadership preceding the announcement and the tweets where it was mutually agreed that an agreement could not be reached,” one leader said, requesting not to be named.

hands being tied since he had seen the results of that in the party’s disastrous 2017 Uttar Pradesh election campaign, sources said. After several rounds of talks, presentations, deliberations between the two sides and any-moment-now signals sent to the media, the announcement on Tuesday of them going their own ways was mutual and there was no acrimony, sources said. “There was a meeting between Prashant Kishor and the leadership preceding the announcement and the tweets where it was mutually agreed that an agreement could not be reached,” one leader said, requesting not to be named. It was only then that Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala and Prashant Kishor made the formal announcements on Twitter, carefully avoiding any harsh words. On the surface, the Congress offered Prashant Kishor what it was prepared to offer - just another seat on the discussion table now christened the
“Empowered Action Group”. An offer that was promptly but politely declined by Mr Kishor. The developments echo the last year’s round of failed talks between the two sides, when, according to Mr Kishor himself, they failed to “take a leap of faith”. “For others, it looks natural that Prashant Kishor and Congress should come and work together. But both sides have to take a leap of faith to work together. That did not happen with the Congress,” he told in January, reaffirming what Congress’s Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also said. “On my side, I had a bad experience working with them on UP (2017 elections). And hence I was very sceptical. I did not want to get in having my hands tied... the Congress leadership, because of my background, they are not wrong in being sceptical about whether I will be 100 per cent loyal to them,” Mr Kishor had said, adding that he was convinced the Congress needs a “revamp” to defeat the BJP.

Formulate scheme to give employment guarantee: Madras HC
Tamil Nadu govt to provide 50,000 free power connections to farmers: Minister The announcement comes close on the heels of the DMK government’s success in providing, for the first time, one lakh agriculture service connections in less than a year during 2021-22 fiscal.
HiIndia Newsdesk
The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to formulate as expeditiously as possible a comprehensive scheme for providing guarantee of employment to the ousted block level co-ordinators, either by redeploying them in any suitable post on a preferential basis against regular vacancies that may arise in various departments or by sanctioning regular posts in the sanitation programmes that are being implemented by it for their eventual regularisation. In the meanwhile, as far as the present employment of these writ petitioners is concerned, the same may be continued and wherever there is any possibility of extending their employment, the same may be extended to these petitioners, Justice V Parthiban said recently.
The Tamil Nadu government will provide 50,000 free agriculture service connections to farmers during 2022-’23 fiscal, Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji informed the Assembly on Tuesday. The announcement comes close on the heels of the DMK government’s success in providing, for the first time, one lakh agriculture service connections in less than a year during 2021-22 fiscal. Winding up the debate on the demand for grants for his department, the Minister said, “the move will not only help to enhance productivity but also expand the acreage under cultivation leading to farmers’ welfare.”
He said the government will take steps to establish 2,000 MW capacity solar power parks this fiscal under the statewide initiative to set up 20,000 MW solar energy power stations over a period of 10 years to meet the growing demand of electricity. Also, steps will be taken to set up wind solar hybrid projects, he said. Earlier, refuting an allegation by the opposition AIADMK on frequent power outages in the state, the Minister claimed the AIADMK was attempting to give an impression that there were no power cuts during its rule. “On the contrary, there were power cuts during your rule,” he said responding to the accusation by former AIADMK Minister P Thangamani.

While he showered praise on Kapoor for ‘maintaining’ himself so well, he took a dig at Kaushik’s appearance, stating that the actor-director also really looks the same as he did 30 years ago — “Satish sir ka bhi manna padega, 30 saal pehle bhi baap ka role kar sakte the, aur aaj bhi kar sakte hai” The audience as well as Kaushik and Kapoor were left in splits.

Allow Non-Residents To Invest In Indian Stocks, US-Indian Group Urges Ms Sitharaman
A
prominent US-Indian group, FIIDS, on Monday urged Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to allow non-resident Indians and overseas citizens of India (OCI) card holders to invest in the Indian stock market. Such a move would boost the Indian economy further by attracting investment from the global Indian community, said the Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS) USA. FIIDS is a US-based institute for US-India policy studies and awareness. Sitharaman, is currently in the West Coast after attending the annual Spring meeting of International Monetary Fund and World Bank. In a submission to Sitharaman, FIIDS said as many as 88 per cent of the Indian Diaspora community in a recent survey had supported the move. FIIDS also urged the Finance Minister to expand the Double Tax Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) to avoid filing of the taxes in the United States on the income (with some restrictions) taxed (filled) in India. “This will avoid a need to file taxes in two places on investment and get credit on the taxes filled in the other country,” it said, adding that this input received a 4.2 out of 5 rating in the survey (84 per cent). Urging the Finance Minister to have an agreement with the US government on social security, FIIDS said in the last few years, many IT immigrants have returned to India.

11 Yr Old Indian American Appears In The Guinness World Record As Youngest Music Producer HiIndia Newsdesk
ARVADA, CO – Eleven-year-old Indian American Madhvi Chittoor now appears in the Guinness World Record as the youngest music producer. This youngster has been a composer since the age of four and has had, as far as anyone can remember, an innate ability to play any song, identifying its notes just by hearing it. Chittoor developed a love for music early on and today plays many instruments including piano, violincello, clarinet, recorder, trumpet, and guitar. She started learning the piano at four and began making her own music. She explained to those asked, that she “hears music.” Her proud mother Lalitha adds that at the age of 6 she got international social media recognition from world renowned movie composers like Lorner Balfe, Hans forZimmer, Director Ron Howard, Nat Geo Genius for her album “Princess Song”, her first composition and another work, “Genius”. The titles were meant to empower girls that they can be both beautiful and intelligent. The album is available in Amazon music, Apple, Spotify and other music streaming sites. The three-movement sonata “Harmony With Nature” resonating with her love for nature and Climate Change activism was inspired, when she was 6, by the animal costumes and masks that children and adults wore for the
Halloween Fair at her school. Her composition – “Glory to John Williams – My Hero” too has received many awards including the Colorado State Level Award for music composition. In July 2018, she performed at St Mark’s Piazza and in the Vatican in Italy, her own composition “Joy Within Reach”. The brilliant Chittoor’s talents go beyond music. Just 11 years old she attends 6th grade in North Arvada Middle School. In May 2020, at the age of 9, she received the National Award in the Reflections competition for her composition, “Look within – Atman Inquiry.” She is the author of the book, “Where Does the Cowgirl Live?” which she wrote at six and is on Kindle. She has been selected to the UN Children Advisory Team of the United Nations Global Compact 26, the voluntary initiative to implement universal sustainability principles. Chittoor plans on releasing her second music album next year. The child of immigrant parents from India – who have no background or particular knowledge of music – plans on becoming a music director. She says she would like to score for films just as Lorne Balfe, Hans Zimmer, John Williams in Hollywood and Ilayaraja, A.R. Rahman and Anirudh in South Indian cinema.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today requested states to reduce the Value Added Tax (VAT) on fuel “in the spirit of cooperative federalism”. Listing fuel prices in cities across the country, PM Modi pointed out that states which had lowered VAT have lower fuel prices. Stressing the spirit of cooperative federalism enshrined in the Constitution, he said the country strongly fought a long battle against Covid through that spirit and must also do the same for economic issues given the impact of global issues like the ongoing “war-like situation”.
“Let me give you a small example. The Centre reduced the excise duty on petrol and diesel last November to reduce the burden on the citizens. We also requested the states to reduce their taxes and transfer the benefit to the people. Some states reduced taxes but some states did not give any benefit from this to the people. Due to this, the prices of petrol and diesel in these states continue to remain high. In a way, this is not only an injustice to the people of these states but it also has an impact on neighbouring states,” PM Modi said. “I am not criticising anyone, just discussing,” the PM said while listing out the states that did not reduce VAT on fuel during the steep hikes. “For some reason, states like Maharashtra, West Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Jharkhand did not agree to slash VAT on fuel. The burden of high prices continued to stay on the citizen,” he said.

Air Pollution Can Cause Heart Attacks, Stroke and Asthma Attacks: Why is it Getting Worse in US? Emissions related to fossil fuels have decreased in U.S., but climate change has led to worse air quality.
Particle and ozone air pollution continue to impact communities throughout the United States, with some more heavily burdened.
A new report from the American Lung Association finds that air pollution is increasingly becoming more of a problem for people In the U.S.
Climate change canceling out gains in other areas
Raising awareness of the dangers of air pollution
T
his year’s report includes data from 2018 through 2020. It focuses on two of the most common types of air pollution — fine particle pollution (both shortterm and year-round) and ozone pollution. The American Lung Association has produced these reports since 2000. There have been improvements in some types of pollution during this time, driven in part by the Clean Air Act. Emissions from transportation, power plants, and manufacturing have dropped in recent years, according to the report’s authors. However, they wrote that some of these gains have been offset by increases in pollution related to climate change. This includes spikes in particle pollution and more days with high ozone levels due to wildfires and extreme heat. Research shows that climate change has already led to a longer wildfire season, a greater number of wildfires per season, and a greater area burned. In addition, the impact of wildfires on air quality is not just local. A recent studyTrusted Source by researchers at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, found that wildfires in the Pacific Northwest also impact air quality in central and northeastern areas of the country.
Some communities more burdened by air pollution
Other research has found similar racial and ethnic disparities with air pollution. A study published April 7 in Nature SustainabilityTrusted Source, found that during the COVID-19 stay-athome orders in California in 2020, neighborhoods with high Asian and Hispanic populations experienced larger declines in air pollution compared to neighborhoods with larger white populations. Study author Pascal Polonik, a PhD student at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, said while this may sound like a positive, it suggests that these communities are usually more affected by pollution. “During normal times when there’s no shutdown, those emissions — the emissions that went away during the shutdown — are actually having a disproportionate burden on those communities,” he said. In addition, the study showed that communities with higher Black populations didn’t see a similar drop in air pollution levels during the shutdown. “This doesn’t mean that Black people experience less air pollution,” said Polonik. But “those communities might be more impacted by certain fixed sources that are less likely to change during the shutdown,” such as power plants, factories, and electricity generators.
More than 40 percent of Americans live in places with unhealthy levels of particle pollution or ozone, according to an annual report released today by the American Lung Association (ALA). The organization’s “State of the Air” report for 2022 also shows that air pollution is becoming increasingly problematic for many Americans. Over two million more people were breathing unhealthy air in their community compared to last year’s report. In addition, during the three years covered by the latest report, Americans experienced more “very unhealthy” and “hazardous” air quality days than previously during the report’s two-decade history. “The fact that we see an increase in the number of Americans that are impacted by particulate pollution compared to last year really demonstrates that air quality remains an important concern for the public,” said Dr. Meredith McCormack, an ALA national spokesperson and a pulmonary and critical care physician at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Air pollution affects more than the lungs
Particle pollution refers to tiny bits of solids and liquids in the air. This type of pollution comes from factories, power plants, gasoline-powered vehicles, wood-burning stoves and fireplaces, and wildfires. It ranges from coarse particles — like pollen, dust, and ash — to fine and ultrafine particles. While the nose and lungs can trap larger particles in the air we breathe, smaller particles can reach the deepest parts of the lungs. Some ultrafine particles can even pass into the bloodstream and travel to different parts of the body, where they can affect other organs. Particle pollution can trigger illness, hospitalization, and premature deaths. An estimated 48,000 Americans die each year from fine particle pollution, according to the ALA report. Most of these deaths are due to respiratory and cardiovascular causes — such as heart attacks, strokes, and asthma attacks. Short-term exposure to fine particle pollution has also been linked to an increased chance of having a positive result on a COVID-19 testTrusted Source. Researchers think that air pollution may worsen the severity of symptoms rather than increase the risk of infection, although they say more research is needed. “This [type of relationship] was also the case with other viruses beforehand,” said El-Hasan. “It’s just more pronounced now because we’re dealing with a pandemic.” The other type of pollution included in the ALA report is ozone air pollution, also known as smog. This can impact health by causing inflammation and other damage to the lungs. Over time, this can impair lung function and increase the risk of premature death. Ozone forms in the lower atmosphere when other pollutants — usually nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) — chemically react in sunlight. These other pollutants are emitted from motor vehicles, power plants, factories, paint, consumer products, and other sources.
As a pediatrician, El-Hasan is particularly concerned about the impact of air pollution on children. “All of us have a right to clean air. But because kids’ lungs are growing, air pollution actually reduces lung development,” said El-Hasan. “So an adult who grows up in pollution has less lung capacity than an adult who grew up in clean air.” These kinds of impacts will be more severe in communities that have ongoing exposure to air pollution. Long-term exposure has been linked to health problems such as low birth weight in children, increased risk of fetal and infant mortality, impaired lung development in children, and lung cancer. “When you have a situation where the same county or the same neighborhoods are experiencing higher air pollution levels year after year, those people are exposed to continuously higher pollution levels,” said Anenberg. “That really has very serious consequences for public health.” McCormack said one of the goals of the “State of the Air” report is to raise awareness about air pollution. People can even visit the ALA’s website and find out how their community is doing. Or how other communities are faring. “It’s also a tool that really demonstrates that even if things are okay in your community, they might not be okay in other areas,” said McCormack. “As a whole, we need to make sure that everyone has access to clean air.” In addition to educating the public, Anenberg said she hopes the report reaches decision-makers, who have the power to make systemic changes to reduce emissions that drive air pollution and climate change. “We really need to put in place policies to move away from fossil fuel combustion and reduce emissions,” she said. “This will move us towards protecting public health.”

Dia Mirza makes a statement with her sustainable fashion choices From adorning a trendy co-ord set to a dazzling evening gown — Dia paves the way for sustainable fashion
D
ia Mirza, who is quite vocal about the need for adopting sustainable lifestyle choices and keeps advocating ethical means of living, makes sure to walk the talk. Time and again, you can spot the actor flaunting chic sustainable outfits from homegrown Indian designers, serving lessons on sustainability and style. As such, the 40-year-old recently opted for a printed ‘bloom-moon’ co-ord set from sustainable fashion label, Ekastories, for a meeting with the CEO of Wildlife Trust of India. It consisted of a pastel orange blazer top and a pair of matching straight-fit pants, featuring digitallyprinted floral motifs all over. True to her style, she kept it subtle with just a pair of drop earrings and brown flats. With her sleek straight hair and minimal makeup, Dia looked chic as ever! “The wild always makes me smile,” the actor wrote, as she posed amidst the lush greenery of Periyar, Thekkady. Summers are all about easy-breezy outfits and fun floral prints. In keeping
with the seasonal trend, the actor also sported a tangerine dress from Summer Somewhere. The full-sleeved ensemble featured a plunging neckline and white floral prints all over.
Move over scrambled eggs, try this viral grated eggs avocado toast Rio’s flamboyant Carnival parade is back after the pandemic
Rio’s Sambadrome has been home to the parade since the 1980s, and is a symbol of Brazil’s Carnival festivities. During the pandemic, it was a shelter for more than 400 homeless people and also served as a vaccination station
For those looking for easy breakfast options, the internet can be a mine. If you are someone who loves their avocado, you would surely like to try yet another twist to the humble avocado toast. Move over poached eggs, fried eggs or scrambled eggs; adding to the innumerable food trends, a new viral trend that is doing the rounds is of grated eggs on an avocado toast. Toasting a piece of bread, and as it warms up, she slices an avocado. Once the toast is done, she adds three dollops of mayo to it and smoothens the condiment into a thin layer. She then places the avocado slices on top. To add grated egg, she takes a flat grater and grates a hardboiled egg over it. “Grated Avocado Toast is a complete breakfast and oh so good. Hard-boiled egg grated over the top of mashed avocado and slices of fresh tomato,
Colourful floats and flamboyant dancers are delighting tens of thousands jammed into Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Sambadrome, putting on a delayed Carnival celebration after the pandemic halted the dazzling displays. Rio authorities said earlier this week those attending the parade would have to show proof of vaccination, but media reports showed that attendees had no trouble getting tickets or entering the Sambadrome without showing the required documents. Venice is a tourist paradise as visitors all over the world get attracted to the beauty of its canals, mesmerising architecture and stunning artworks housed in its museums. Over the years, over-tourism has led to crowding and harmful effects on the city and its environment. To manage this bustling tourism, it is now going to be the world’s first city to require an entry fee. As the visitor numbers hit pre-pandemic levels for the first time over the Easter weekend, day-trippers will now be charged 10 euros to enter the Italian city. According to the city’s mayor, visitors can make reservations from this summer, with an entrance fee due from January 2023.

Many sporting giants have gone through this phase: Rohit Sharma HiIndia Newsdesk
Skipper Rohit Sharma ran out of reasons for Mumbai Indians’ losing streak, which extended to eight games, accepting that the team hasn’t put their best feet forward in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). However, the MI skipper feels many sporting giants have gone through such a lean phase and it is important that the team sticks together during this period. “We haven’t put our best foot forward in this tournament but that happens, many sporting giants have gone through this phase but I love this team and it’s environment,” he wrote on Twitter. “Also want to appreciate our well wishers who’ve shown faith and undying loyalty
Barcelona’s American defender Dest out with hamstring injury

Barcelona’s American defender Sergiño Dest has been sidelined because of a hamstring injury, the Spanish club said Monday. Dest injured his right hamstring in the first half of Barcelona’s 1-0 home loss to Rayo Vallecano in the Spanish league on Sunday. The club said tests confirmed the injury and it was unclear whether the 21-yearold right back will be able to return before the end of the season.

Indians are enduring their worst run in IPL history having lost their first eight games including the one against Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday night. Skipper Rohit Sharma himself has also not been at his best while opener Ishan Kishan, who Mumbai had bought back Kishan for Rs 15.25 crore at the IPL auction, has suffered a drastic drop in form after fifties in the first two games.
Tennis world divided on Wimbledon banning Russians, Belarusians
HiIndia Newsdesk
Some of tennis’ best players, past and previous, and its member bodies like the ATP and WTA, rose in unison against Wimbledon’s decision to bar players from Russia and Belarus due to their countries’ waging war against Ukraine. The ongoing war waged on Ukraine has prompted sporting bodies to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes and organisations. Even the idea of allowing these athletes to compete under a
neutral flag has been shot down across multiple sports. B oth the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) condemned Wimbledon’s decision and said that it was unfair on the players from both countries. The ATP said that the decision had ‘the potential to set a damaging precedent for the game’. The WTA too came out with a similar statement. “Individual athletes should not be penalised or prevented from competing due to where they are from, or the decisions made by the governments of their countries,” the WTA said, according to The New York Times. “Discrimination, and the decision to focus such discrimination against athletes competing on their own as individuals, is neither fair nor justified.”
Virat Kohli is overcooked, needs a break: Ravi Shastri
HiIndia Newsdesk
Echoing the same sentiment, former England captain Kevin Pietersen said Kohli should take time away from the game as well as social media to rejuvenate himself Batting stalwart Virat Kohli is mentally “overcooked” and needs to take a break from cricket in order to serve the country for at least another six-seven years, feels ex-India coach Ravi Shastri. Kohli has been going through a lean patch with just two 40-plus scores to show in last seven innings for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the current IPL season. The 33-year-old from Delhi, who hasn’t scored a century in the last 100 matches across formats, had stepped down from T20 captaincy both for India and RCB and also quit Test leadership, while he was removed from ODI skipper’s role. Shastri feels the likes of Kohli needs to be handled with care and empathy amid the COVID-19 restrictions which has confined players inside bio-bubbles. “I am going straight to the main guy here. Virat Kohli is overcooked. If anyone needs a break, it’s him,” Shastri told. Kohli was out for a duck on Tuesday night as RCB rode on Faf du Plessis’ 96 to claim a 18-run win over Lucknow Super Giants.
Boria Majumdar likely to get twoArun Lal set to tie the knot for year ban in Wriddhiman Saha case second time with long time friend in Kolkata: Reports
The Indian cricket board is likely to impose a two-year ban on talk show host Boria Majumdar after a three-member BCCI committee found him guilty of intimidating India wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha over an interview request. “We will be informing all state units of the Indian cricket board to not allow him inside stadiums. He won’t be given media accreditation for home matches and we will also be writing to ICC to blacklist him. Players will be asked not to engage with him,” a top BCCI official told The Sunday Express on condition of anonymity. The issue came to light on February 19 this year, when the 37-year-old Bengal wicketkeeper shared a Twitter post that said: “After all of my contributions to Indian cricket… this is what I face from a so-called ‘Respected’ journalist! This is where journalism has gone.”
HiIndia Newsdesk
Former India cricketer Arun Lal is reportedly set to tie the knot for the second time with long-time friend Bul Bul Saha next month in Kolkata. Images of Lal’s wedding invite which went viral on social media revealed that the wedding will take place on May 2 at the Peerless Inn (Kolkata). Lal, who is the current coach of the Bengal Ranji cricket team, was earlier married to his first wife Reena but they separated with mutual consent.
Thereafter, he has been in a relationship with Bul Bul, who is 38-years-old and reportedly works as a teacher, for a long time. According to reports the couple got engaged last month and have now decided to make it public. Originally from Kapurthala, Punjab, Lal, who was born in 1955, came to Kolkata in 1978 after getting a job at a tea company. Along the way, he became Mr Bengal, as far as cricket was concerned. Lal represented the Indian national men’s cricket team in 16 Test matches and 13 ODIs between 1982 and 1989.

“More Than Me, Party Needs...”: Prashant Kishor On Declining Congress Offer
New Delhi: Political strategist Prashant Kishor’s rejection of the Congress’s offer to join a party committee on Tuesday came with a side of advice. “I declined the generous offer of Congress to join the party as part of the EAG (Empowered Action Group) and take responsibility for the elections,” he wrote in his first reaction on Twitter. “In my humble opinion, more than me the party needs leadership and collective will to fix the deep rooted structural problems through transformational reforms,” he added.

With only 4.64 lakh people taking their third Covid jab since April 10, Indians could be grappling with vaccine fatigue, a reluctance to take a booster shot that experts attribute to a combination of fear, confusion and misinformation. As India’s Covid graph inches upwards, not enough people are getting their booster shots. Among the reasons for the apparent lethargy are the fear of adverse effects, the view that Covid is now a mild infection and doubts over whether a precaution dose is indeed useful, said scientists, public health experts and industry insiders.

Booster dose response poor
New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar today countered criticism of India’s position on Ukraine, saying the western powers have been oblivious to the pressing challenges facing Asia including last year’s events in Afghanistan and the continuous pressure on the rules-based order in the region. In an interactive session at the Raisina Dialogue, Mr Jaishankar said the crisis in Ukraine could be a “wake-up call” for Europe to also look at what has been happening in Asia, saying it has not been an “easy part” of the world for the last 10 years.
To a specific question by Foreign Minister of Norway Anniken Huitfeldt on the situation in Ukraine, Mr Jaishankar said India has been pressing for an urgent cessation of fighting and a return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue. “I think where the conflict in Ukraine is concerned, we have a very clear position that has been articulated. A position which emphasises the urgent cessation of fighting, which urges a return to diplomacy and dialogue which stresses the need for respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states,” he said.

Indonesia’s shock move to ban exports of cooking oil will reverberate across the world, threatening to push up costs for the likes of Nestle SA and Unilever Plc and heightening concerns about food inflation. India, the world’s biggest importer of palm, soybean and sunflower oils, faces a further spike in inflation. Domestic prices of the edible oils in New Delhi surged between 12% and 17% since the war in Ukraine erupted late February. The government has abolished import levies and is trying to clamp down on hoarding of cooking oil, but prices are showing little signs of cooling. Hindustan Unilever, Nestle India and ITC Ltd. will be among those directly affected, and the impact will be felt most keenly in biscuits, noodles, cakes, potato chips and frozen desserts.
