Second batch of classified Biden documents found
The first cache was found at a private office in Washington DC that Mr Biden used after his vice-presidency.
The matter is under review by the US Department of Justice.
Former President Donald Trump is facing a criminal investigation for allegedly mishandling classified files. It was not yet clear on Wednesday when or where the additional tranche of files was found by Biden aides. The original batch of about 10 documents was discovered in November at the Penn Biden Center, a think tank near the White House, but only came to light this week.
unclear why they turned up in a private office he started using after that. Access to classified documents is limited by law to people with special authorisation and there are rules about how they are kept and stored. All White House records, including classified ones, are required to be turned over to the US National Archives after an administration’s time in office. The White House has not yet commented on the newly discovered batch. However, the find has been confirmed by the BBC’s US partner CBS and other US media.

During her daily press briefing on Wednesday, Biden press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declined to answer questions about the first cache of files. “This is under review by the Department of Justice,” she said. “I’m not going to go beyond what the president shared yesterday.”
India, US agree on mechanism to export Indian shrimps for Americans
Washington: (IANS) Embattled US Congressman George Santos, who has admitted to lying about his educational history and professional biography, has reiterated that he would not step down.
Santos, a 34-year-old Republican elected in last year’s midterm elections to represent New York’s 3rd congressional district, tweeted on Wednesday, “I will NOT resign!”, reports Xinhua news agency.
Technical glitch delays
US First Lady Jill Biden has undergone surgery to remove two cancerous skin lesions, the president’s doctor has said.
Both were consistent with basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer, Dr Kevin O’Connor wrote in a memo on Wednesday.
All cancerous tissue was fully removed from the lesions in a procedure known as Mohs surgery, it said.
Mrs Biden is “in good spirits and is feeling well”, Dr O’Connor said.
Following a routine skin cancer screening earlier this month, doctors recommended that a small lesion above Mrs Biden’s right eye should be excised out of “an abundance of caution”.
India and the United States are developing a mechanism for the Indian fishermen to be able to export shrimps for the American consumers, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said Wednesday.
“We had discussions for restarting the wild caught shrimp exports from India to the US,” Goyal told reporters at a news conference here at the conclusion of India-US Trade Policy Forum meeting that he co-chaired with US Trade Representative Katherine Tai.
This was an area that was banned by the US because of concerns around turtles, in the areas where wild caught shrimp was being fished in India, he said.
“A turtle excluder device has been designed with the technical support of the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), from the US, and that design has been accepted now, between the two countries as a collaborative effort between India and the United States,” he said.
Washington: (IANS) As a result of a massive nationwide technical glitch, some 10,000 flights in and out of the US were delayed, while more than 1,300 others were cancelled, according to the country’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Wednesday’s disruption was due to a “damaged database file”, the BBC quoted the FAA as saying, adding that “at this time, there is no evidence of a cyber attack”.
Although normal air traffic operations were slowly resuming, further delays are expected to continue through at least Thursday and possibly longer, as airlines try to get planes in and out of crowded gates.
Thousands of nurses go on strike for 3rd day in New York City
New York: (IANS) Thousands of nurses from New York City’s Mount Sinai Hospital and Montefiore Bronx continued to be on strike the third day on staffing shortage, low wage and other issues.
Hundreds of nurses wearing red hats continued to line both sides of Madison Avenue near the entrance of Mount Sinai Hospital on Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, another smaller group of nurses rallied at the 5th Avenue on another side of Mount Sinai Hospital complex, Xinhua news agency reported.
Nurses called for more nurses and
enforcement of safe staffing requirements while complaining heft salaries and bonuses for management of the hospitals.
Minna Scott, a registered nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital, told Xinhua, “99 percent of nurses have voted to authorise the strike and we’re all out here rallying on the street.”
Mount Sinai is a private hospital, so it is not under the laws of the New York State to enforce any of the labour laws, including that on staffing ratio, according to Scott.
At present, there are more than 500 vacancies of nurses and nurses have to work overtime because of short staffing, said Scott.

Originated from Pakistan, deadly shipment of uranium seized at Heathrow airport
London, Jan 11 (IANS) Counterterror cops and security services in the UK have launched a probe after a deadly shipment of uranium was seized at London’s Heathrow airport, a media outlet reported. The undeclared nuclear material can be used in a dirty bomb.
It was destined for Iranian nationals in the UK, originated from Pakistan and arrived on a flight from Oman, The Sun reported. A source said: “The race is on to trace everyone involved.” The package, suspected of being smuggled to UK-based Iranians, arrived in the hold of a passenger jet. Specialist scanners detected the potentially lethal uranium as it was ferried to a freight shed, triggering alarms.

World Bank slashes Pakistan’s GDP growth in half
Islamabad, Jan 11 (IANS) In view of Pakistan’s deteriorating economic condition, the World Bank (WB) has slashed the country’s GDP growth to only 2 per cent in the current fiscal year, cutting its forecast by 50 per cent. According to a WB’s latest Global Economics Prospects report, the 2022 devastating floods and slowdown in global growth have contributed to what it termed as “sharp, long-lasting slowdown”. Due to the global growth frozen at only 1.7 per cent this year, Pakistan’s overall rate will also be much slower and will stand at only 2 per cent points from its June 2022 estimates.

Prince Harry’s ‘Spare’ reveals intimate details
Prince Harry has delivered a tragic portrayal of his father King Charles III in his highly anticipated memoir, describing the latter’s early years as “lonely.” Harry writes that his father only survived his time at the boarding school Gordonstoun because he carried a teddy bear around for comfort — a cherished stuffed toy with broken arms and loose threads that the king held on to for many years. Harry adds that it showed a deep sense of loneliness the king experienced during his childhood.
France plans to raise retirement age to 64, angering labor
Workers at Twitter Inc.’s Singapore office were told to empty out their desks and vacate the premises, said people familiar with the situation, as Elon Musk continues to pare expenses around the globe.
Twitter staff were informed via email Wednesday that they had until 5 p.m. to leave the CapitaGreen building and resume their duties remotely from Thursday, one of the people said, asking not to be named discussing private information. Singapore-based staffers have now been reassigned as remote
workers in Twitter’s internal system until further notice, the person added. Singapore serves as Twitter’s AsiaPacific headquarters, a region that was hit hard by deep and abrupt job cuts when new owner Musk took over the San Francisco-based firm. The company this month also let go of Nur Azhar Bin Ayob, who had been the head of site integrity for the region and a relatively recent hire.
Representatives for Twitter didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
There is no safe limit to alcohol consumption and any amount of drinking can severely impact one’s health, according to a statement published by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in The Lancet Public Health journal.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified alcohol along with asbestos, radiation and tobacco, as a high risk Group 1 carcinogen, contributing to cancer worldwide.
The agency has previously found that alcohol causes at least seven types of cancer, including the most common cancer types, such as bowel cancer and female breast cancer. It is also linked with oesophagus, liver and colorectal cancers.
Brazil riots: Arrests ordered for top officials after capital stormed
One official, the former commander of the military police, has been arrested, local media reported.
The officials also include Brasília’s former public security chief Anderson Torres and others “responsible for acts and omissions” leading to the riots, the attorney general’s office said.
Mr Torres denies any role in the riots.
The French government on Tuesday said it would increase the retirement age from 62 to 64 by 2030, a move that will enrage the country’s powerful labor unions. French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced the decision at a press conference in Paris and defended the reform as a way to fiscally balance the country’s pension system. “I’m well aware that changing our pension system raises questions and fears among the French,” Borne said in the press conference. “We offer today a project to balnace our pension system, a project that is fair.”
Brazil’s judicial authorities have ordered the arrest of top public officials after rioters stormed key government buildings in Brasília.
Colonel Fábio Augusto, the police commander, was dismissed from his role after supporters of ex-President Jair Bolsonaro stormed Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court.
The French government has argued that people live longer than they used to, meaning citizens will need to work longer in order to keep the pension financially afloat. It’s also said that its retirement rules are much more generous than most comparable developed economies with aging populations. In Germany, retirement is possible from 65; the retirement age is 65 in European countries including Sweden, Hungary, Luxembourg and Slovenia; Italy, Norway, Greece and Denmark start offering a state pension at 67.

WHO alert against use of Indian cough syrups in Uzbekistan
Geneva, Jan 12 (IANS) The World Health Organization on THhursday warned against the use of two Indian cough syrups for children that have been linked to deaths in Uzbekistan.
The WHO said the products, manufactured by Marion Biotech, were “substandard” and that the firm had failed to provide guarantees about their safety, the BBC reported.
The alert comes weeks after Uzbekistan alleged that 18 children died after consuming a syrup made by the company.
The firm has not yet commented on the alert.
After the deaths were reported in Uzbekistan, India’s Health Ministry suspended production at the company. This week, the food safety department in Uttar Pradesh, where Marion Biotech is based, also suspended the company’s production licence. Diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol are toxic to humans and could be fatal if consumed.

Joshimath demolition shelved
An Amtrak train got stranded in the United States for 20 hours, which caused panic among passengers who called emergency number 911 believing they were being held hostage. According to ABC News, the train left Virginia at 5pm on Monday and was initially scheduled to arrive in Sanford, Florida, by 10am on Tuesday. But derailment of a freight train caused significant delayed, stretching their 17-hour journey to 37 hours. The train finally rolled into the Sanford station on Wednesday morning, the outlet further said.
There were 563 passengers and 333 vehicles onboard.
After bone-chilling nights for the past several weeks, the IMD had predicted only temporary relief for residents of Northwest India from the excruciating cold this week.
New Delhi: As temperatures in North India blip up briefly this week, January 2023 could still go down in the books
as the coldest for the region, a weather expert has predicted, with temperatures in the plains dipping as far as -4 degrees Celsius next week. Severe chills are on the horizon between January 14 and 19 and are likely to be at their peak from January 16 to 18, tweeted Navdeep Dahiya, the founder of Live Weather of India, an online weather platform. And while light rainfall in the national capital might bring some respite from icy temperatures for a few days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also said cold wave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets over Delhi and its neighbouring states from Saturday. Mr Jenamani said Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Western UP and North Rajasthan could also experience drizzle and light rainfall over the next few days.
The BJP government in Uttarakhand on Wednesday said no residential building in Joshimath would be demolished without the consent of the owners, against the backdrop of massive protests against allegedly unilateral plans to pull down houses that have developed cracks.
A total of 723 houses have, however, been marked as unlivable and the occupants are being relocated, the government said.

Pak Denies Package With Uranium Found At London Airport Was From Karachi
Islamabad: Pakistan today rejected the reports in British media that a uranium-tainted cargo package that landed at London’s Heathrow Airport last month originated from Karachi, saying the news is “not factual”.
The BBC reported on Wednesday that British counterterrorism police were investigating after border officers seized cargo contaminated with uranium at Heathrow Airport last month.
The Sun newspaper, which first reported the
news, said the uranium came from Pakistan, the report said, adding it was found in a shipment of scrap metal. Responding to the reports, a top Pakistani official said they were “not factual”, adding that no information had been shared by the UK with Pakistan officially.
“No information to this effect has been shared with us officially. We are confident that the reports are not factual,” Foreign Office
Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra was quoted as saying by the Dawn newspaper on Thursday.

US govt extends $250k towards conservation of historic Paigah tombs in Hyderabad
The United States government will extend financial support of $250,000 towards the conservation and restoration of six of the Paigah tombs, built in the 18th and 19th centuries, located at Santoshnagar in Hyderabad.
The US Chargé d’Affaires, Ambassador Beth Jones, Tuesday visited the Paigah tombs complex along with US Consul General Jennifer Larson to announce a US-funded conservation project at the historic tombs.
The Paigah tombs or Maqhbara Shams al-Umara is a necropolis belonging

Hyderabad: As the best of cars from across India lined up at the 10th edition of 21 Gun Salute Concours d’Elegance Vintage Car Show at Vadodara, city-based Veda Kumar and his nephew Keshav Rao won the Mahindra and Mahindra, Best in Class award for their rare Willys Station Wagon, manufactured in 1961.
The vehicle participated in this event as it was all assembled by Mahindra and is one of the cars that was progressively manufactured and supplied by them, said Keshav, a vintage car enthusiast who is into freelance restoration.
“Before the foreign imports were stopped and Indian manufacturing started completely, many foreign companies brought in Knock Down Kits and assembled the cars in India. Willys Station Wagon falls in this category,” he added.
Veda Kumar has a passion for automobiles and this one in specific, as these cars were not supplied to everyone. He developed a liking for this vehicle and bought it around the early ’90s from the Fire department. “Veda Kumar owns this car for about three decades now, he used it for 15-20 years and as we saw these cars were becoming rare and scarce in the 2000s, we thought of restoring it to its original condition,” said Keshav.

District judges are chosen through elections in the US and Pattel, 51, defeated the sitting judge in the first round of the election to become the first Malayalee to be a district judge in the US.
Pattel’s path to the post was far from easy and was due to his determination, hard work, and the willingness to fight his way upwards, as he was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth.
As his parents were daily wage earners, he, to make both ends meet, had to work as ‘bidi’ roller and soon became an
expert. Life was tough for him when he took a break for a year after his Class 10. He completed his further education and bachelor’s degree, while engaging in part time work including as a daily labourer so as to earn his livelihood, but never let it affect his studies.
After enrolling for LLB at a college in Kozhikode, he worked in a hotel and in 1995, he passed law and straight away entered into practising law.
Then came his marriage to Shubha, a nurse by profession and he moved base to Delhi and was practising at the Supreme Court.

An “atmosphere of intolerance” currently prevailing in India will not last long and that people will have to unite to fight against it, Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen on Sunday said.
Interacting with students, teachers and research scholars during a programme organised by Pratichi Trust in Kolkata on his maternal grandfather Kshitimohan Sen’s concept of ‘Yukta Sadhana’ at the Amartya Sen Research Centre, the eminent economist said, “This situation will not last long. People are being beaten up if they don’t agree or simply do not listen to others. People will have to work together. Differences must be sorted out. We need to reduce the distances between us.”
Asked by a seventh-grade student on the “benefits of a combined pursuit”, Sen quipped, “Is diversity always good?
Of late, India has had diversity which was not there before. There is a need to look at both advantages and disadvantages of diversity.”
Asked by a teacher as “how can we retain the country’s diversity”, the Nobel laureate reminded the audience of the words of Mahatma Gandhi. “Gandhi said during the initial phase of the struggle for Independence that we should reduce the distances between ourselves. Our ability to respect others

But yes, the situation in Bengal will not continue like this for long. Mr Sen should know that there will be a change here - BJP leader Dilip Ghosh is decreasing. And this is one of the reasons we are lagging behind,” he said. Trinamool Congress’ Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy said, “We welcome his statement. He is actually criticising the situation wherein the BJP is dividing the entire country on the basis of religion, caste, gender and language.” CPIM state secretary Mohammad Salim said, “He expressed his understanding as a true thinker. The is a torchbearer of the tradition of pluralism and unity that India has carried from the likes of Rabindranath Tagore.” BJP leader Dilip Ghosh, however, said, “He is an economist. Prince Harry Reveals The “Most Dangerous Lie” Told About His Book ‘Spare’
Prince Harry has said that the “most dangerous lie” about his tell-all autobiography, ‘Spare’, is that he “boasted” about killing 25 Taliban fighters while serving as a soldier in Afghanistan.
Prince Harry’s controversial book, which was officially released on Tuesday, sparked outrage after it was revealed that the Duke of Sussex had engaged in the taking of human lives. “So, my number is 25. It’s not a number that fills me with satisfaction, but nor does it embarrass me,” he wrote in his memoir, as per Sky News. He also said that he did not think of them as “people”, but instead as “chess pieces” that had been taken off the board. Now, in an interview with Stephen Colbert on ‘The Late Show’, the Duke accused the press of taking his words out of context and said that the spin endangered his family. Prince Harry also defended his remarks, saying that he wanted to reduce veteran suicide. Further, in the interview - the first conducted after details from the books were publishedthe Prince said that it had been “hurtful and challenging” to watch the directions after his book was prematurely leaked.
“Without a doubt, the most dangerous lie that they have told, is that I somehow boasted about the number of people that I killed in Afghanistan,” he said, as per the BBC.
Saudi Crown Prince’s Big Step Towards Boosting Investment in Pakistan
Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has ordered exploring increasing the kingdom’s assistance and investments in Pakistan, a step toward furthering relief to the South Asian nation economy reeling from deadly floods. The Saudi Fund for Development will conduct a study on increasing the deposit in Pakistan’s central bank to $5 billion from $3 billion earlier, state-run Saudi Press Agency reported Tuesday. It will also assess the plan to increase investments in Pakistan to $10 billion, according to the same report.
The kingdom’s fund provides soft loans and grants to developing countries as a means to bolster allies and cement new relationships. The statement comes a day after the Crown Prince met with Pakistan’s army chief General Syed Asim Munir to review ways to enhance bilateral ties and strengthen cooperation. Pakistan’s 7.375% 2031 dollar bond was indicated
0.8 cents higher at 36.1 cents on the dollar, up by the most since the start of December. The South Asian nation’s 8.25% 2024 dollar bond was indicated up 0.8 cents at 54.2 cents on the dollar. The nation’s benchmark KSE-100 Index rose 0.8% at 2:34 p.m. local time
Pakistan’s economy was strapped for funds after a gridlock with the International Monetary Fund over tax targets delayed disbursal of loan installments.
The situation was made worse by floods that inundated a third of the nation and cut its growth by half. Pakistan has relied on friendly nations to tide over the crisis. Earlier this week, the nation received commitments of more than $10 billion in assistance. The nation’s foreign exchange reserves dropped to $5.6 billion - the lowest in almost nine years and enough to cover less than one month of imports.

Leaders of Australia, Germany and France to visit India in next few months
India is expected to witness a flurry of visits by top foreign leaders including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the next few months amid mounting global concerns over adverse impact of the Ukraine conflict on food and energy security.
The primary focus of these visits are expected to be on expansion of bilateral cooperation in areas of energy, trade, technology, defence production, healthcare and people-to-people exchanges, people familiar with the preparations for the visits told PTI.
A front-burner issue in the talks is set to be the conflict in Ukraine and its global implications including on food and energy security, they said.
While Chancellor Scholz is expected to be in India later next month, Albanese is set to visit the country in early part of March, the people said.
The French side was initially exploring the visit by Macron in the first week of March but nothing has been firmed up yet, they said, adding the trip may even be advanced or could be pushed back. They said dates for the visits have not been locked yet.

Officials of India and Saudi Arabia are also looking at a bilateral visit to New Delhi by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
About German Chancellor Scholz’s proposed visit to India, the people cited above said both sides are keen on
enhancing cooperation in areas of trade, defence, clean energy and climate change. In December, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock paid a two-day visit to prepare for Scholz’s long-awaited trip.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chancellor Scholz held bilateral talks in the Indonesian resort city of Bali on November 16 on the sidelines of the G20 summit.
The first meeting between the two leaders took place during Modi’s visit to Berlin on May 2 for the 6th India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC). It was followed by Modi’s visit to the Alpine castle of Schloss Elmau in southern Germany on June 26 and 27 to attend the annual summit of G7 grouping.

New York: (IANS) An Indian-American reality TV star has been sentenced to 78 months in prison for running a nationwide telemarketing fraud scheme that targeted “vulnerable, elderly victims”.
Jennifer Shah, 49, who starred in ‘Real Housewives of Salt Lake City’, previously pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection with telemarketing.
In addition to the prison term, Shah of Salt Lake City, Utah, has also been sentenced to five years of supervised release.
The court ordered her to forfeit $6,500,000, 30 luxury items, and 78 counterfeit luxury items, and to pay $6,645,251 in restitution.

consequences of the many years she spent targeting vulnerable, elderly victims,” Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement last week. These individuals were lured in by false promises of financial security, but in reality, Shah and her co-conspirators defrauded them out of their savings and left them with nothing to show for it.
“This conviction and
sentence demonstrate once again that we will continue to vigorously protect victims of financial fraud and hold accountable those who engage in fraudulent schemes,” Williams said.
According to court documents, from at least 2012 until her arrest in March 2021, Shah was an integral leader of a wide-ranging, nationwide telemarketing fraud scheme that victimised thousands of innocent people.
The scheme principally involved selling those victims so-called “business services” in connection with the victims’ purported online businesses (the “Business Opportunity Scheme”).
Shah knowingly and intentionally facilitated the sale of “leads” a” contact information for potential victims
who had been identified as susceptible to the scheme’s lies -- to sales floors that were perpetrating the Business Opportunity Scheme and, during the latter portion of her participation in the scheme, owned and operated one of the sales floors that was part of the scheme, the court noted.
Many of Shah’s victims were elderly or vulnerable, and suffered significant financial hardship and damage, a US attorney office statement said.
The victims were defrauded over and over again at Shah’s direction until they had nothing left.
She and her co-conspirators persisted in their conduct until the victims’ bank accounts were empty, their credit cards were at their limits, and there was nothing more to take.
The reality show star took a series of increasingly extravagant steps to conceal her criminal conduct from the authorities -- she directed others to lie, she put businesses and bank accounts in the name of others, she required payment in cash, she instructed others to delete text messages and electronic documents, etc.
Shah also moved some of her operations overseas, and tried to put computers and other evidence beyond the reach of investigators,” the attorney office statement read. “Jen Shah deeply regrets the mistakes that she has made and is profoundly sorry to the people she has hurt,” her defence lawyer Priya Chaudhry said in a statement.

Why I don’t work as often now
Legendary comedian Johnny Lever said that the main reason why he doesn’t work as often as he used to anymore is that there is no longer a requirement for comic relief characters in Bollywood movies.
Comedy icon Johnny Lever rued the state of the industry, and said that there is no longer a requirement for his brand of humour in Bollywood films anymore. He theorised in a new interview that insecure actors demanded that they be given comic scenes as well, to avoid a scenario where he, Johnny, would walk away with all the adulation. And as a result, the presence of comic relief characters became negligible.
In an interview Johnny cited the example of his breakout film, the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Baazigar. He said that the film ‘didn’t have a writer’, which meant that he had to come up with all the comedy scenes himself. And he did it, thanks to ‘youthful exuberance’.
Asked why he doesn’t appear in as many films as he used to anymore, he said in Hindi, “I turn down work because the writing is bad these days. You speak of Baazigar… That film had no writer, it was just me. I came up with all the punches. Those were good days, we used to work hard. But these days, we don’t have (comedy) writers. It’s like, ‘Johnny bhai will handle it’. That’s not how it works. We need a blueprint first.”
He continued, “Comedy was given respect back in the day. These days, there’s hardly any comedy in movies. Back in the day, I used to get such a positive response, my scenes would become the highlight of the movie. Sometimes, the heroes would feel threatened and my scenes would be edited. They used to watch how the audience would react to my scenes, and feel insecure. They started asking writers to come up with comedy scenes for them, as well. The writers would start distributing comedy scenes. And my roles became smaller and smaller, which is what you’re seeing now. Comedy is gone.”
He said that very few directors — he singled out Rohit Shetty — still value comedy in their movies. But otherwise, he said, heroes and villains are all being funny these days. There is no requirement for comic relief from actors like him. He most recently appeared in Cirkus, directed by Shetty.
Final Cut: 6 Indian films on Oscars ‘reminder list’ of 301 ‘eligible productions’
Los Angeles: (IANS) Six Indian feature films -- the much-favoured ‘RRR’, India’s official entry ‘The Last Film Show’ (‘Chhello Show’), the sleeper hit ‘Kantara’, ‘The Kashmir Files’, ‘Gangubai Kathiyawadi’ and ‘Me Vasantrao’, the Marathi-language biopic on classical singer Vasantrao Deshpande -- are on the list of 301 movies that are eligible for the 95th Oscars.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the list on Monday (U.S. Pacific Time). It includes presumed contenders such as ‘Elvis’, ‘The Fabelmans’ and ‘Living’. The number of movies marks an increase from last year’s 276 films that were eligible from 2021, and down from 366 in 2020 at the height of the pandemic, reports ‘Variety’.

Considered an important precursor for the Oscars, the Globes are emerging from a major controversy that resulted in the industry largely blacklisting them for over a year. After fundamental changes were introduced behind-thescenes, mostly in relation with diversity and transparency, the event is making a comeback to TV after an underthe-radar 2022 edition. “Naatu Naatu,” a dance number featuring stars Jr NTR and Ram Charan, was competing against Taylor Swift’s “Carolina” from Where the Crawdads Sing, “Ciao Papa” from Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Lady Gaga’s “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick, and “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, performed by Rihanna. A dance-off number in which the central characters, played by NTR Jr and Ram Charan, challenge British oppressors, “Naatu Naatu” became known for its elaborate choreography and musical storytelling.

Abhay
Actor Abhay Deol is still on the quest of chronicling meaningful stories, but he is not as “defiant” as he was more than a decade ago. The actor, who became a poster boy for indie cinema in the late 2000s and gathered a loyal fan base beyond films for fearlessly questioning the system, says he is currently in a “good head space”, where he is calm and hopeful, more than ever.
Abhay is currently gearing up for the release of his debut Netflix series Trial By Fire, which aims to follow the hardships and resilience of a family seeking justice following the 1997 Uphaar Cinema fire tragedy, which claimed 59 lives, left over 100 injured and followed a 25-year-long battle.

The song, composed by the musical duo of Vishal-Sheykhar, also features Deepika Padukone and has been choreographed by Bosco Martis. It has been shot in scenic locales in Europe.
Sharing a video, Gauri wrote, “Welcome to our visual list of things that are white…It just evokes a sense of purity, innocence and freshness..cant stop listening to my favorite track at work.” The video showed various white coloured artefacts for a room. It featured a chess knight, chess queen, small cactus among others.

Talking about his character in ‘Taaza Khabar’, the actor said: “I play 46-yearold Mehboob, owner of a bakery situated in a middle-class locality. Cricketer Virat Kohli shared a poignant quote on fame by late actor Irrfan Khan on the latter’s birth anniversary. The same image was also shared by his wife and Bollywood star Anushka Sharma. Irrfan had passed away in April 2020 after battling a terminal disease.
“Wanting fame is a disease and one day I will want to be free from this disease, from this desire. Where fame doesn’t matter. Where just experiencing life and being okay is enough,” Kohli’s Instagram story read. He had also posted a video on Instagram where Hollywood star Tom Hanks could be heard giving his take on how to deal with life when it throws some curveballs at you. “I wish I had known ‘this too shall pass’. You feel bad right now? You feel pissed off? Do you feel angry? This too shall pass. You feel great. You feel like you know all the answers. You feel like everybody finally gets you,” Tom Hanks could be heard saying in the video posted by the cricketer. Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma tied the knot in 2017 after dating each other for a few years.

From a Farmer to running 1000 Gas Stations in US: Darshan Singh Dhaliwal
Zofeen Maqsood
This year, Milwaukee, Wisconsin based businessman Darshan Singh Dhaliwal has been chosen as the recipient of the Pravasi Bhartiya Samman. The honor will be awarded to Dhaliwal in the city of Indore in India.
The Sikh Indian American social worker and businessman, has an interesting story that can serve as a great inspiration for the first and second generation Indian-origin youth of the country. Dhaliwal is the President of Bulk Petroleum of Milwaukee, WI and runs over 1000 gas stations across the US. But Dhaliwal was not born with the silver spoon, instead he worked hard and strove to achieve this excellence in America a country he chose to make his home. Dhaliwal arrived in the US in the early 1970’s as a young, enthusiastic student of engineering with only a little money in his pockets. He was born in a small village called Rakhra near Patiala in Punjab. His father was a hardworking farmer and he was the eldest of three sons. He attended Government Rapduman College in Nabha, Punjab and used to help his father in the fields after his classes.
On how Dhaliwal decided to come to the US is also an interesting story, as a young boy in Punjab during his early 20’s Dhaliwal happened to meet a Peace Corps Volunteer from America. When he heard of American customs and way of life, as a young boy he got interested in seeing and experiencing that life. He packed his bags and with just a few bucks set out in America. He reached North Dakota first and from there he took a bus ride that stooped midway somewhere in
Milwaukee. He toured the city and on knowing that the place has an Indian grocery store, a Sikh Gurudwara and also places where you can watch Indian movies, he felt completely at home and decided to stay there instead of North Dakota. It seemed it was destined that it was here in Wisconsin, a city he instantly loved, Dhaliwal met the love of his life. Debra was a third-generation Wisconsinite from Little Chute. The two were attracted to each other and got married two years later. Together with Debra, who was a nurse at a clinic, Dhaliwal’s journey towards creating a
life for himself began in America. The hardworking young man did not shy away from anything. He did odd jobs –delivering pizza, working at a bakery as the young couple tried to save money. All this while, Dhaliwal dreamed of making it big and doing something spectacular. It was in 1977, that Dhaliwal’s new professional journey began. He rented a gas station for $300 a month and taught himself everything from changing oil to mechanical processes. He began managing everything himself, even though it meant a lot of work. When he had his new born, he would often
work while holding him in his arms. By 1979, the hardworking man had saved enough money to buy his very own gas station. He invested $30,000 and named his gas station – Darshan. He kept on working very hard and multiplied his business quickly. By 1986, Dhaliwal had bought dozens of gas stations and today he owns multiple gas stations in Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri and Kansas. A proud father of three sons and three daughters, Dhaliwal today is one of the largest gasoline retailers in the United States. It is estimated that he owns over 1,000 gas stations in 11 states and has an annual sales of $2 billion (Rs 9,000 crore), which is five times the size of Punjab’s yearly budget.
The billionaire businessman was in news just two years ago when he was denied entry in India. During the farmers’ protest in India, While, entering India he was stopped at the airport by immigration officials and was asked about his support for the farmers as he was running a langar at the Sanghu border near Delhi.
A great community person and a philanthropist, Dhaliwal expressed that he was pleasantly shocked on learning that he was being awarded the Pravasi Bhartiya Samman.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA) is the highest honour for overseas Indians. The award is conferred by the President of India during Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, an annual convention that acknowledges the achievements of the Indian diaspora. A jury-cum-awards committee, with the Vice President of India as Chairman and External Affairs Minister as vice chairman and other distinguished members unanimously selected the awardees for 2023.

OLD BRIDGE, NJ- Old Bridge Township School District officials closed the Carl Sandburg Middle School Friday after a series of underground gas leaks were discovered in the building, the superintendent said.
Classes for students at Carl SandburgMiddle School — which serves approximately 980 students in grades 6 through 8 — have been cancelled through Tuesday, according to a statement from Superintendent David Cittadino. Beginning Wednesday, the school will switch to remote classes through at least Jan. 17, Cittadino said.
“We had every reason to believe that this, like other gas leaks, would be repaired and school would operate normally as soon as possible,” Cittadino said. “But what we found was significant gas leaks
all along the exterior lines within the building.” Students who cannot remain home during the remote instruction period will be provided busing to and from supervised learning centers at Old Bridge High School, officials said.
Special accommodations will be provided for students enrolled in the school’s Learning and Language Disabilities Program and Applied Behavioral Analysis program, district administrators said.
Old Bridge Township School District officials are bringing in portable boiler trailers to provide heat and hot water to the school, officials said. Those trailers will allow students and staff to occupy Carl Sandburg Middle School while the existing gas service lines are being replaced.
NEW YORK, NY— New study hints that making it in the city is even harder than perhaps Frank Sinatra realized.
New York City ranked 147th out of 182 cities in WalletHub’s “Best Places To Find A Job” study.
“Ultimately, your luck of finding work depends largely on location,” the study states.
And, as a location, New York City didn’t fare well when it came to the factors behind the ranking.
The city ranked dead last in affordable housing, 180th in average work and commute time, 178th in median annual income and 177th in job opportunities.
So, what cities were the best?
San Francisco, despite being the nation’s second-most expensive rental city behind the Big Apple, grabbed the number one spot in the study.
Columbia, Maryland, snared the second spot, while Orlando, Florida, San Jose, California, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, rounded out the top five. The overall worst place to find a job was Memphis, Tennessee, at least according to the study.

Own A Business? Zero Credit Card Transaction Fees With NRS Pay FeeBU$TER
An Indian American doctor Aarti D Pandya from Georgia has agreed to pay about $1,850,000 to resolve allegations that she billed the government for cataract surgeries and diagnostic tests that were not medically necessary.
Pandya Practice Group based in Conyers, near Atlanta, Georgia allegedly violated the False Claims Act. According to a press release from the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, Pandya knowingly submitted false claims to federal healthcare programs for medically unnecessary cataract extraction surgeries and YAG laser capsulotomies.
The prosecution allegations say that Pandya performed procedures on patients that did not qualify for the procedure under accepted standards of medical practice. In some cases, the procedures even caused injury to her patients. She also falsely diagnosed patients with glaucoma to justify unnecessary diagnostic testing and treatment that was billed to Medicare. Many diagnostic tests ordered by Pandya were either not properly performed, or were performed on a broken machine. They were also not interpreted in the medical record, as required by Medicare.
As part of the settlement of the government’s claims in this case, the Pandya Practice Group agreed to forfeit the suspension amount to the government. Going forward, in order to protect federal health care programs and beneficiaries, Pandya and the Pandya Practice Group have entered into a detailed, multi-year Integrity Agreement and Conditional Exclusion Release (IA) with the Office of Inspector General (OIG)
NEWARK, NJ- Prior to the 1950s, when the first credit card was introduced, most customers paid for their purchases with cash. Credit cards became more convenient when customers no longer had to carry loose cash to pay at checkout. Moreover, credit cards became a safer way for customers to pay for items, as they allowed the customer to have control over their finances and did not require them to carry large amounts of cash that could easily be lost or stolen. Credit cards have grown in popularity over the years, and their use continues to rise as a result of the numerous benefits provided by credit card companies. However, when customers use their credit cards to pay for purchases, merchants are taking a hit and, consequently, being forced to pay additional fees.
To address these concerns and make it easier for retailers, credit card companies have been offering “cash discount programs.” A cash discount program allows the store owner to accept credit card payments while passing the fees on to the customers. The product prices in the store include the credit card transaction fees built into the cost of goods so that the merchant doesn’t have to pay the processing fees. Customers who pay with cash get a cash discount at the register. A cash discount program is ideal for any retailer that processes a high volume of credit card transactions. Over time, it can save a retailer thousands of dollars.
Cash discount programs are becoming increasingly popular with retailers, and are well-received by customers. About four years ago, National Retail Solutions, known for its powerful point of sale (POS) system, launched its credit card processing service, NRS Pay. Thousands of satisfied merchants are already saving money nationwide with NRS Pay credit card processing. NRS Pay is fast-gaining popularity for offering honest, clean credit card processing services, without hidden fees, long-term, locked-in contracts, or early termination fees. NRS Pay offerings include two ideal programs for independent
retailers: Clean Rate, at just 2.49% + 10¢, with a ten-dollar monthly account fee, and FeeBU$TER, with $0 transaction fees. FeeBU$TER is 100% free (monthly fee waived) for a business processing over $18K/mo., and otherwise costs just $49.95/month FLAT.
NRS Pay FeeBU$TER works with the NRS POS system to speed up checkout and help merchants save money. The POS price book has the credit card transaction fee built into every product, so the register automatically rings up pricing that includes the transaction fee. The customer pays the transaction fee when paying with a credit card, so that the merchant doesn’t have to. On the NRS POS customer-facing display, the option to pay cash with a discounted price is also displayed. This gives customers a choice to pay with a credit card and earn miles, points and rewards, or save money at the register with cash payment.
Elie Y. Katz, president and CEO of NRS says, “We are strong advocates for independent retailers, who need affordable technology to compete in the big box arena. We are especially concerned that merchants not be ripped off by credit card processing companies. Credit card processors can easily take advantage of customers, by assessing hidden fees. The contracts tend to have lots of legal fine print which can be confusing and deceptive. From the founding of NRS pay, it’s been our mission to be transparent and straightforward, and we never lock a customer into a contract. We want our customers to feel safe and comfortable accepting credit card payments. We very seriously honor integrity.”
Choosing NRS Pay’s FeeBU$TER cash discount program can help a busy brick-and-mortar store owner succeed while offering customers a choice of how to pay at checkout. Every NRS Pay plan includes a free credit card terminal, which integrates seamlessly with the NRS POS.

NASA gets new chief technologist
He will serve as principal advisor to Administrator Bill Nelson on technology policy and programmes at the space agency’s headquarters
An Indian-American aerospace industry expert has been appointed as NASA’s new chief technologist to serve as principal advisor to Administrator Bill Nelson on technology policy and programmes at the space agency’s headquarters here. In his position, AC Charania will align NASA’s agencywide technology investments with mission needs across six mission directorates and oversee technology collaboration with other federal agencies, the private sector, and external stakeholders, NASA said in a statement on Monday.
The position works within NASA’s Office for Technology, Policy, and Strategy.
“Technology plays a vital role in every NASA mission. Making sure that we’re pursuing the best policy objectives allows this agency to continue to serve as a global leader in innovation,” Bhavya Lal, NASA associate administrator for technology, policy, and strategy, was quoted as saying in the statement.
“Charania is an experienced leader in managing large, rapidly shifting technology portfolios. I am eager for him to apply his knowledge and enthusiasm at NASA,” Lal said.
Lal served as acting chief technologist prior to the appointment of Charania, whose first day working at NASA Headquarters was January 3.
“The rate of advancement we seek in the 21st century is dependent upon selecting and maturing a portfolio of technologies into systems to execute our missions,” Charania said in the
statement.
“With this in mind, there are incredible opportunities in partnerships within and outside of NASA. I now look forward to the opportunity to work with the entire community to increase the rate of space and aviation progress,” he added.
Prior to joining NASA, he served as vice president of product strategy at Reliable Robotics, a firm that works to bring certified autonomous vehicles to commercial aviation.
His previous experience also includes working at Blue Origin to mature its lunar permanence strategy, Blue Moon lunar lander program, and multiple technology initiatives with NASA.
Charania has also worked in strategy and business development for the Virgin Galactic (now Virgin Orbit) LauncherOne small satellite launch vehicle programme.
Charania led the formation of the FastForward industry group focused on high-speed point-topoint transportation, was a NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts fellow, and served on the Lunar Exploration Analysis Group Commercial Advisory Board, according to the release. He received a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a bachelor’s in economics from Emory University. More Than 7000 NYC Nurses Go On Strike After Fails Contract
NEW YORK, NY— More than 7,000 nurses in two New York City hospital systems went on strike Monday amid a long-standing push to fix dangerously short staffing.
The walk out came after a weekend of failed contract negotiations with Montefiore and Mount Sinai Hospital, officials with the New York State Nurses Association said.
Other hospital systems in recent weeks and days had struck tentative agreements with the nurses’ union that averted a wider strike.
But the strike still prompted Mayor Eric Adams to take steps — including potentially rerouting ambulances and activating a situations — in case of problems.
“Again, while New York City is prepared for a potential strike, we are hopeful that all parties keep working to reach a voluntary agreement,” Adams said in a statement.
Nurses and their supporters Monday planned to picket three Montefiore hospitals and Mount Sinai Hospital. And that doesn’t mean that New Yorkers in need of medical care should avoid those hospitals, leaders with the New York State Nurses Association said.
“To all of our patients, to all New Yorkers,
we want to be absolutely clear: If you are sick, please do not delay getting medical care, regardless of whether we are on strike,” the union tweeted. “In fact, we invite you to come join us on the strike line after you’ve gotten the care you need.”
The strike stems from nurses’ growing alarms about dangerously low staffing levels in hospitals that they argue leaves patients at risk.
But talks with many New York City hospitals failed to gain traction to the point that the union threatened a strike.
Going into the weekend, five hospital systems face walk outs by the strike deadline Monday. Deals were ultimately struck by all except Montefiore and Mount Sinai Hospital.
Gov. Kathy Hochul, after negotiations failed, called for binding arbitration so the parties could reach a swift resolution.
“The New York State Department of Health will continue to enforce staffing requirements under the law at these hospitals to maintain the delivery of essential health care services to the community and protect patient health and safety,” she said in a statement.
“Likewise, the Health Department will continue to ensure that all providers are meeting the requirements of the law.”

“Multiple Mistakes”: Go First Gets Notice After 55 Passengers Left On Bus
New Delhi: After a Go First Airways flight took off from Bengaluru with more than 50 passengers forgotten in a bus on the tarmac, aviation regulator DGCA has sent notice to the airline for “multiple mistakes”.
Go First apologised today for what it called an “inadvertent oversight” and offered the affected passengers one free ticket to travel anywhere in India, within the next year. The crew involved in the incident have also been de-rostered, said a statement.
On Monday morning, as flight G8 116 took off for Delhi from Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International airport at
6.30 am, around 55 passengers were left behind in a bus meant to deliver them to the plane for boarding.
The passengers were taken in four buses to the aircraft. One of the buses was apparently stopped and kept waiting as the Go First plane took off.
The passengers had their boarding passes, and their bags were all checked
in, according to complaints on Twitter tagging the airline, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office and Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.
The passengers were reportedly accommodated on a flight that left four hours later, at around 10 am.
The regular said “multiple mistakes such as lack of proper communication, coordination, reconciliation and confirmation” were at play and resulted in a highly avoidable situation.
Go First has been given two weeks to reply.
Many passengers slammed the airline on Twitter for a “most horrifying experience”.

“I Have Killed Rahul Gandhi”
New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi said he had “killed Rahul Gandhi” and was not bothered about his image, emphasising that the Bharat Jodo yatra should not be about him. “Rahul Gandhi is in your mind. I have killed him. He is not there. Not in my mind at all. He’s gone. Gone,” the Congress leader told journalists in Haryana on Sunday. He was asked by a journalist how the yatra had changed his image. “The person you are looking at is not Rahul Gandhi. You can see him. You don’t understand it...Read Hindu scriptures. Read about Shiv-ji (Lord Shiva), you will understand. Don’t be shocked. Rahul Gandhi is in your head, not mine. He is in the BJP’s head, not mine,” Rahul Gandhi said.

The district administration had earlier put red cross marks on more than 200 houses in the sinking town that are unsafe for living. It asked their occupants to either shift to the temporary relief centres or rented accommodations for which each family would get assistance of ₹ 4,000 per month for the next six months from the state government.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli Unlikely To Be Selected For T20Is: Sources
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday launched a veiled attack on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and dubbed them as “21st century Kauravas”.
Addressing a street-corner meeting after the Bharat Jodo Yatra led by him reached Ambala district Monday evening, Gandhi said Haryana is the land of the Mahabharata and went on to take a dig at the RSS and the ruling dispensation. “Who were the Kauravas? I will first tell you about the 21st century Kauravas, they wear khakhi half-pants, they carry lathi in hand and hold shakhas.... India’s 2-3 billionaires are standing with the Kauravas,” he alleged, referring to the RSS.

Pakistan’s ISI’s C Wing is constantly changing its strategy on Kashmir.
Srinagar, Jan 9 (IANS) Pakistan’s ISI’s C Wing is constantly changing its strategy on Kashmir.
Replicating their Punjab plan, given Kashmir is fast on track of normalcy, particularly seen in huge reduction in acts of terror and violence incited, aided and abated from across the border, it appears that Pakistani agencies are using terror modules to supply drug and narcotics so as to derail the process. The Pakistani agencies intend to destroy the peaceful and constructive environment in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) that has seen acceleration in investment in development of infrastructure in recent times as well as creating newer opportunities for education and employment for the youth. As the economy of Pakistan is in a dire situation and funding to terror modules from state has stopped, Pakistan agencies are increasingly relying on mobilising funds by smuggling drugs and narcotics to India in connivance with Pakistan agencies.

6 Weeks On, Mumbai Man Arrested For Peeing On Woman On Plane, Sent To Jail
New Delhi: Mumbai man Shankar Mishra, who urinated on an elderly woman while drunk on an Air India flight in November, was arrested late on Friday night by the Delhi police from Bengaluru and was brought back to the national capital. A Delhi court later sent him to judicial custody for 14 days, saying no police custody was required for further investigation.
He was on the run, and a lookout notice or airport alert was put out to trace him.
The Delhi police had deployed a team in the Karnataka state capital to catch Shankar Mishra, after getting some concrete leads on his whereabouts.
Though he switched off his phone, he was using his social media accounts to communicate with his friends, which gave an opening to the police to zero in on him, top police sources said.
34-year-old Mishra had, at least in one place, used his credit/debit card too, sources said.

November 26, Shankar Mishra allegedly unzipped his pants and urinated on an elderly woman in the business class. He later begged the woman not to report him to the police, saying it would impact his wife and child.
Air India filed a police complaint only this week and said as there was “no further flare-up or confrontation”, and “respecting the perceived wishes of the female passenger, the crew elected not to summon law enforcement upon landing. It banned Mishra from flying for 30 days, triggering outrage by social media users who said it was not enough. The complainant had told the crew she did not want to see Mishra’s face and was “stunned” when the offender was brought before her and “started crying and profusely apologising”, according to her complaint, which is part of the FIR (First Information Report). The woman also accused the crew of being “deeply unprofessional” and said they were not proactive in managing a “very sensitive and traumatic situation”.

Australian Open chief defends tournament’s January date
Tournament director Craig Tiley has described as “ridiculous” and “bizarre” calls for the timing of the Australian Open to be changed to allow players a longer off-season.
Tiley was responding to an Australian media report which suggested the first Grand Slam of the season might be moved away from January and the height of the Australian summer.
“I did read that. I thought it was absolutely ridiculous – a bizarre claim,” Tiley said. “You talk to every player, this is the season. It starts in January. It starts here in Australia.” Tiley was speaking during an event at Melbourne Park on Monday that marked the start of the Australian Open qualifying tournament. The Australian player Alex de Minaur, who also attended the event, said it was “no secret” the professional season was a long one but said he relished the January start.

I have not given up on T20 format: Rohit Sharma
India’s Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma on Monday said he has no plans to “give up on T20 Internationals” amid strong indications that the transition has already started under Hardik Pandya. After the T20 World Cup failure in 2022, Pandya has led Team India to two T20 series wins against New Zealand and Sri Lanka while Rohit, along with another former skipper Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, are currently not a part of the shortest format.
“Firstly, it is not possible to play backto-back matches. You need to give them (all format players) enough break. I definitely fall in that as well. We have three T20Is against New Zealand. We will see what happens after IPL. I have not decided to give up the format,” Rohit said on the eve of first ODI against Sri Lanka.
With the next T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026, it is widely believed that the selectors will opt to go for more younger prospects, centered around the leadership of Pandya, when they come around.
Rohit will next be in action in the first of three ODI between India and Sri Lanka which will be played on Tuesday, January 10 in Guwahati. The second will be in Kolkata on January 12 while the 3rd will be at Kariavattom on January 15.

In the recent past, intermittent fasting has become popular, mostly for losing weight. But some global studies have shown that it can lead to diabetes remission, perhaps due to weight loss. Just a week ago, a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism showed how over 44 per cent of people on an intermittent fasting diet for three months achieved Type-2 diabetes remission, discontinued their medication or insulin and maintained it as such for the follow-up period of one year. “While this is calorierestricted eating and comes in a variety of formats, no particular one has proven best for people with diabetes,” says Dr Anil Bhoraskar, Secretary, Diabetic Association of India (Scientific Section) and Senior Diabetologist at SL Raheja Hospital, Mumbai.
Is intermittent fasting (IF) safe for people with diabetes?
Intermittent fasting is a type of diet that involves limiting your meals to a certain window of time, followed by a fixed period of eating little or nothing. The fasting period can last anywhere between a few hours to multiple days. It may be effective for weight loss, which in turn can lower the risk of diabetes in obese patients. While intermittent fasting is considered safe for non-diabetics, people with diabetes may be more prone to fluctuations in blood sugar levels, including both hypoglycemia, during and after periods of not eating, and hyperglycemia, when
eating after a break. Major adjustments in eating patterns could lead to major fluctuations in blood sugar levels, which can be dangerous.
Hypoglycaemia is a condition wherein the blood sugar level can drop too low if an individual takes insulin or medication and suddenly eats in smaller quantities than normal. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) this can lead to symptoms such as shakiness, confusion, irritability, rapid heartbeat, sweating, chills, dizziness and sleepiness, blurred vision and nausea. Hyperglycaemia can happen if you eat more than your typical food intake, which may likely occur if you are hungry after a period of fasting. Besides, wild swings in sugar levels can weaken organ systems. Diabetes patients on SGLT2 inhibitor drugs may develop a highly acidic body condition called ketoacidosis. When you lose body fat with intermittent fasting, you could also lose muscle mass and become weaker. Which is why it should be a guarded and well-guided approach, not resorted to on individual whim and fancy.
Can intermittent fasting cause diabetes?
There is no direct evidence to suggest that it does. A 2020 study on rats found that fasting every other day for 12 weeks led to an increase in abdominal fat, damage to pancreas cells and the development of insulin resistance. While intermittent fasting diets come in a variety of formats, no particular one
Not being overwhelmed by the several types of meals available and avoiding filling the plates with everything. “Making wise decisions is essential for enjoying such events. Here are some guidelines, that you must keep in mind to make smart choices at the buffet.
• Do not tracking every meal. “It will probably cause you more stress to try to track it,” she said.
• You are allowed to simply enjoy foods for the taste of them, the nutritionist said.
• Don’t just eat all of it because it is in front of you. “If you wouldn’t usually eat croissants and doughnuts at breakfast, you don’t have to just because it’s there.”
• Include protein-rich foods to slow down digestion and support your health.
Intermittent Fasting of any variety is not recommended for all diabetics. Before starting any diet or weight loss plan, it is important to consult your physician, says Dr Anil Bhoraskar, Secretary, Diabetic Association of India (Scientific Section) and Senior Diabetologist at SL Raheja Hospital
has proven best for people with diabetes. (1)16:8: People eat all meals within an eight-hour window followed by 16 hours of fasting. Many people fast from 8 pm until noon the next day and keep their eating window between noon and 8 pm (2) 5:2: This type of intermittent fasting involves eating normally for five days and then consuming fewer than 500 calories per day on the two days of fasting
(3) Alternate day fasting: This form of intermittent fasting involves a full 24-hour period of not eating anything, followed by 24 hours of eating as usual Can intermittent fasting reverse diabetes in some patients?
It can reverse diabetes in certain patients who are not on tablets and insulin. It works in early onset cases. What are the benefits of intermittent fasting?
Apart from the metabolic effect on belly fat, it also gives a tremendous sense of mental satisfaction and regularity in the lives of individuals who are trying to manage their diabetes and obesity. However, people with irregular lifestyles and eating habits should attempt such eating patterns under strict medical supervision. This is especially true for individuals, who take oral medications or insulin, as they should closely monitor their blood sugar levels during periods of fasting and eating.
• Eating your foods slowly and enjoying the flavours. “Pause and check in with hunger signals. Put your knife and fork down between bites,”
• “Eat slowly so your brain can recognise when it is full rather than stuffed. Also, be deliberate about your meal selections by avoiding taking a little bit of everything and instead loading up on healthy food options first,” she concluded by saying.
“It is okay to occasionally indulge in foods that aren’t totally healthy if you don’t suffer from any health issues or food sensitivities, especially in social settings which demand so. However, you should actively avoid specific food at a buffet if you suffer from food sensitivities and gut issues that cause you to have a bad reaction to certain foods.”
Is it healthy to sleep with your socks on?
We reached out to experts who explained the good and the bad of wearing socks to bed. They explained that wearing socks while sleeping is perfectly normal and can help one sleep better because colder feet constrict the blood vessels and significantly lower circulation. “However, this does not mean that not wearing socks is bad, so, either way, is fine depending on how you feel,” said Dr R R Dutta, HOD Internal Medicine, Paras Hospitals, Gurugram. Agreeing, Dr Aditya S Chowti, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road, Bangalore said, “It’s a good thing to wear socks at night during winter to keep your feet warm and protected. Women may find it helpful for cooling their core temperature. It also improves cracked heels and is known to increase circulation.”
What are the benefits?
*The main advantage of wearing socks before going to bed is that it keeps your body warm, especially in winter.
*It also keeps your feet from drying out or having dry skin.
*Wearing socks in bed increases blood flow to the feet and heat loss through the skin, which helps lower core body temperature. As a result, a person can fall asleep faster.
*Wearing socks to bed improves blood flow to your feet.
*It improves cracked heels. *Studies have observed that foot warming using bed socks during sleep in a cool environment was found to have positive effects on sleep quality.
*It is associated with shortened sleep onset, lengthened sleep time, and lessened awakenings during sleep.
Adverse effects
Sleeping with your socks on, however, is not always beneficial and can prove to be detrimental to your health under certain conditions. “Wearing very tight socks can impair blood circulation and can be detrimental. Additionally, not ensuring proper hygiene of socks can result in adverse consequences,” said Dr Viswesvaran Balasubramanian, Consultant, Interventional Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad. Agreeing, Dr Chowti said that foot hygiene can be compromised if socks are not cleaned regularly or if the socks are tight. “There may be an increased risk of skin infection, especially if the socks used are made of synthetic material like nylon.
