Want To See Pakistan In An Economically Sustainable Position: US
According to reports, Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserve dropped to USD 4.3 billion last week, which is said to be enough for three weeks of imports.
Washington: The United States wants to see Pakistan in an economically sustainable position, an official spokesperson said, amid reports that the South Asian country’s foreign exchange reserves are fast running out.
According to reports, Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserve dropped to USD 4.3 billion last week, which is said to be enough for three weeks of imports. The forex reserves have dwindled despite efforts by the government to shore up its economy.

We are supportive where we can be of our Pakistani partners, but ultimately these are conversations between Pakistan and
international financial institutions,” he said. On January 6, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held talks with International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Kristalina Georgieva to break the deadlock over the release of the next tranche of assistance for the cashstrapped country.

Davos, Switzerland: An Indian farmer recently used a ChatGPT interface to access an opaque government programme via the internet despite knowing only a local dialect, Microsoft chief Satya Nadella said on Wednesday to underline that the world is entering a golden age of artificial intelligence. Recent breakthroughs in the AI space and products like ChatGPT are capturing broad attention and generating excitement, he said during an interaction here at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting. Nadella said technology will provide more and more ways to bring people together.
The cutting-edge chatbot ChatGPT is capturing the world’s imagination and the new artificial intelligence site amassed 1 million users in just five days after its recent launch. ChatGPT answers complex questions via short prompts on a vast array of topics, and even writes lyrics and poetry. “AI is just at the beginning of the S-curve. The near-term and long-term opportunities are enormous,” he added. Looking ahead, he said, Microsoft intends to lead on quantum computing. Microsoft has all the building blocks for a next-generation quantum computer.

US Fraud Trial Begins Over Elon Musk’s 2018 Tesla Tweet
San Francisco: Trial began Tuesday over whether Elon Musk committed fraud with a 2018 tweet saying he was poised to take Tesla private. The choosing of jurors who will judge the evidence started in a San Francisco federal courtroom, where Tesla chief Musk was expected to be among those called to testify. The case dates back to August 2018 when Musk tweeted that he had sufficient funding to take Tesla private, causing a whirlwind in the company’s share price. Musk was sued by shareholders for allegedly costing them billions of dollars with the post that said funding was “secured” to buy out the company’s shareholders.
The social media giant banned Trump a day after the January 6, 2021 insurrection, when a mob of his supporters tried to halt the certification of his election defeat to Joe Biden by storming the US Capitol in Washington. The former reality TV star had spent weeks falsely claiming that the presidential election was stolen from him and he was subsequently impeached for inciting the riot.
Twitter’s bird statue sells for $100,000 at auction
An auction for hundreds of items at Twitter’s San Francisco HQ has just ended.
A statue of the platform’s famous bird logo has claimed the most expensive item sold, coming in at $100,000 (£81,000).
Viewers online noted that some of the used items were no bargain, as they were selling for more than retail.
The sale comes as owner Elon Musk cuts costs at Twitter following his $44bn purchase of the company last year.
Since taking over in late October, Mr Musk has laid off around half of the company’s 7,500 staff.
He has also ended many of Twitter’s perks, such as free meals.
US adult film star Ron Jeremy has been declared mentally incompetent to stand trial for alleged sex crimes.
Mr Jeremy was indicted on 34 counts of sexual assault - including 12 of rape - over a period of more than 20 years. A Los Angeles judge said on Tuesday that Mr Jeremy could not face the charges, as he was in a state of “incurable neurocognitive decline”.
The 69-year-old has been in prison since his arrest in 2020. He denied any wrongdoing and vowed to clear his name. He was not present for the latest hearing.
China retaliates to US envoy’s ‘Spoiler’ comment
Colombo: (IANS) Launching a major diplomatic counter-attack on the US, China on Wednesday charged that the US envoy in Colombo was “sowing discord between China and Sri Lanka”. “’China, China, China!’, our US colleague starts chanting this infamous mantra and blaming China as a ‘spoiler’ to the island’s negotiation with the IMF during her recent interview with a UK television program on Sri Lanka’s debt issue,” the Chinese Embassy in Colombo said on Twitter and also in a statement.

Jacinda Ardern has announced she will quit as New Zealand prime minister next month, saying she no longer
“enough in the tank” to lead.
Ms Ardern choked up as she detailed how six “challenging” years in the job had taken a toll.
She will step down as Labour Party leader no later than 7 February. There will be a vote in the coming days to determine her replacement.
New Zealand will hold a general election on 14 October.
Ms Ardern, 42, said she had taken time to consider her future over the summer break.
“I had hoped that I would find what I needed to carry on over that period but, unfortunately, I haven’t, and I would be doing a disservice to New Zealand to continue,” she told reporters.

And a year later she became the second elected world leader to ever give birth while in office.
She steered New Zealand through the Covid-19 pandemic and its ensuing recession, the Christchurch mosque shootings, and the White Island volcanic eruption.
“It’s one thing to lead your country through peace time, it’s another to lead
them through crisis,” she said. “These events... have been taxing because of the weight, the sheer weight and continual nature of them. There’s never really been a moment where it’s ever felt like we were just governing.”
Ms Ardern led the Labour Party to a landslide election victory in 2020, but her domestic popularity has declined to new lows in recent months, according to opinion polls.

Israel court orders minister’s removal
Moscow, Jan 18 (IANS) Russia has deployed its lethal anti-aircraft systems around Moscow in a sign that President Vladimir Putin is taking precautions against potential strikes from Ukraine, media reports said.
Putin has now deployed Russia’s fearsome S-400 defence missiles to two locations in the capital amid fears Kyiv
The S-400 ‘Triumf’ air defence system is designed to destroy aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, including mediumrange missiles. It can also be used against ground objectives. Its deployment to Moscow comes after two suspected Ukrainian drone strikes hit two air bases deep inside Russia in December, damaging two nuclear-capable bombers that were thought to be preparing for an attack on Ukraine, Daily Mail reported. One S-400 air defence system, which has a range of 248 miles, has been deployed in fields belonging to the Russian State Agricultural University in the northwest of Moscow.
Australian Open bans Russian and Belarusian flags from tournament
Kathmandu,: (IANS) With the second body recovered at the crash site of a Nepali passenger plane in central Nepal on Tuesday, 71 bodies had been found with the last missing victim remains to be confirmed, an official said.
“We have found one more body in the Seti River,” Guru Datta Dhakal, assistant chief district officer of the Kaski district where the ATR-72 aircraft crashed, told Xinhua.
“So the total number of bodies recovered has reached 71.”
A Yeti Airlines plane crashed into the Seti river gorge near the city of Pokhara on Sunday when it was flying from Kathmandu to Pokhara with 72 people on board, Xinhua news agency reported.
China’s economy stumbles
Israel’s Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down the appointment of a politician convicted of tax fraud as a senior minister in Benjamin Netanyahu’s new Right-wing coalition, a move likely to accelerate a looming showdown between the government and the judiciary over control of the country’s highest court.
Ten of the 11 judges on the panel ruled against the appointment of the minister, Aryeh Deri, a close Netanyahu ally, on grounds of “extreme unreasonability”, primarily because of his recent conviction and suspended prison sentence, and said the Prime Minister should remove him from his posts.
Russian and Belarusian flags have been banned from the Australian Open tennis tournament after a courtside incident.
Spectators were initially permitted to bring the flags into Melbourne Park on the condition they did not cause “disruption”. But the organisers reversed that decision on Tuesday, after fans displayed a Russian flag during a match between Ukraine’s Kateryna Baindl and Russian Kamilla Rakhimova. The ban is effective immediately. “We will continue to work with the players and our fans to ensure the best possible environment to enjoy the tennis,” Tennis Australia said in a statement.
The Chinese economy had one of its worst performances in decades last year as growth was dragged down by numerous Covid lockdowns followed by a deadly outbreak in December that swept across the country with remarkable speed.
China grew 3 per cent for the year, numbers released on Tuesday show, much less than in 2021 and short of Beijing’s target of 5.5 per cent.
Other than 2020, it was the most disappointing showing since 1976, the year Mao Zedong died, when the economy declined by 1.6 per cent.
The government’s strict “zero Covid” restrictions cast a pall over 2022, strangling the economy with frequent quarantines, regional lockdowns and massive spending to pay for widespread testing.
Then on December 7, China lifted the policy without warning after nearly three years. Within weeks, the virus had infected hundreds of millions of people, killed many older residents and left factories, offices and restaurants bereft of workers and customers.
The policy reversal by Xi Jinping, China’s top leader, has sparked hope that the economy will regain its footing this spring. Whether it does is of great significance to the world.
China’s consumers are an almost irreplaceable source of revenue for homegrown and foreign companies.

“Supreme, Most Popular Leader Not Only Of India But World”: BJP On PM
India getting chairmanship of G20 and Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership has scripted “new chapters” in the country’s history, the BJP national executive said
New Delhi: The political resolution passed by the BJP national executive has showered encomiums on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him the “supreme and the most popular leader of not only the country but also of the world” and asserting that India has emerged as a “protector of the world’s future” under his leadership.
London: An India-born founder of a multi-cultural marketing agency has been conferred with ‘The Freedom of the City of London’ title for leaving a mark on the financial hub of the British capital.
Manish Tiwari received the honour at a ceremony at the Chamberlain’s Court at Guildhall in London earlier this month. The award, given by the City of London Corporation, dates back to the 13th century and has since developed into an honour bestowed upon individuals who make an impact in the financial hub of London, referred to as the City or the Square Mile. “Thrilled to be sharing this legacy with historical figures and dignitaries- Mr. Churchill, Mrs. Thatcher, and Mr. Nehru, contemporary statesmen like Mr. John Kerry and modern legends such as Harry Kane,” Mr Tiwari said in his reaction.
India getting chairmanship of prestigious international organisations like G20 and Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) under Modi’s
leadership has scripted “new chapters” in the country’s history, it said.
The whole world has now become aware of India’s strength and capabilities which were truly displayed during the corona crisis and the Russia-Ukraine war,the resolution said, adding India

New White House Strategy to Include Urdu, Gujarati, Punjabi language Access
New Delhi: Gautam Adani’s flagship is offering investors discounts of 10 per cent-15 per cent in India’s biggest follow-on share sale as the billionaire tries to woo a wider set of backers. Adani Enterprises Ltd. is seeking to raise $2.5 billion by selling shares in a price band of ₹ 3,112 to ₹ 3,276 a piece, according to an exchange filing Wednesday. Bloomberg News reported earlier that large investors would get a concession of 10 per cent on the current market price while retail investors would pay even less to buy into a company that has almost doubled in market value over the past year.
New Delhi: The Editors Guild of India yesterday urged the government to “expunge” the draft amendment to the IT Rules asking social media companies to take down news articles that have been deemed “fake” by the Press Information Bureau (PIB).
“The Guild urges the Ministry to expunge this new amendment, and to initiate meaningful consultations with press bodies, media organisations and other stakeholders, on the regulatory framework for digital media, so as to not undermine press freedom,” a statement
issued by the Editors Guild of India said. “At the outset, determination of fake news cannot be in the sole hands of the government and will result in the censorship of the press,” the Guild said in a statement here, voicing “deep concern” over the draft amendment to the Information Technology (IT) Rules. It said that already multiple laws exist to deal with content that is found to be factually incorrect.
“This new procedure basically serves to make it easier to muzzle the free press, and will give sweeping powers to the PIB, or any ‘other agency authorised by the Central government for fact checking’, to force online intermediaries to take down content that the government may find problematic,” the Guild said.
Amazon Begins Its LargestEver Layoffs: 18,000 People
The Biden-Harris Administration has released its first-ever National Strategy to Advance Equity, Justice, and Opportunity for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) communities. The strategy includes expanding language access across federal programs and taking action to expand access for limited English proficient communities. Among the initiatives, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has developed landing pages on its website in 20 foreign languages including Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Vietnamese, Korean, Tagalog, Khmer, Japanese, Urdu, Arabic, Gujarati, Bengali, and Punjabi.
Amazon.com Inc. is set to begin a round of layoffs ultimately affecting more than 18,000 employees in the largest job cull in its history, which it announced earlier this month.
The cuts come as the retailer grapples
with slowing online sales growth and braces for a possible recession affecting the spending power of its customers. The eliminations started last year and initially fell hardest on Amazon’s Devices and Services group, which builds the Alexa digital assistant and Echo smart speakers. The latest round, scheduled to commence Wednesday, will mostly affect the retail division and human resources.
Amazon shares were little changed in pre-market trading before exchanges opened in New York after closing down 2.1% at $96.05 on Tuesday.

Karnataka BJP doesn’t have the guts to take action on graft like us: AAP
Bengaluru: (IANS) The Aam Aadmi Party’s Karnataka unit on Tuesday charged the state’s ruling BJP with “not having the guts” to take action in corruption issues like its governments did.
AAP leader Brijesh Kalappa said Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai does not have the guts to take action against corrupt people, like the Aam Aadmi Party governments.
Though the State Contractors’ Association has flagging the 40 per cent commission racket of the BJP government and MLAs, the government has remained silent without conducting any investigation, he said.
Case against my son to settle political scores: Bandi Sanjay
Addressing a press conference at the party’s state office, Kalappa said: “State Contractors’ Association President Kempanna held a press conference and exposed the corruption of Chitradurga’s BJP MLA G.H. Thippareddy.
“It has been revealed that Thippareddy

Why is Narendra Modi, who used to mock former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for being silent, not speaking about the 40 per cent commission corruption of the state’s BJP government?” Kalappa questioned.

Hyderabad breathes easy as air quality improves during Sankranti
Hyderabad: BJP State president Bandi Sanjay on Tuesday alleged that a case was illegally booked against his son at the behest of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, in a bid to settle political scores. Speaking to the media in New Delhi, Sanjay stated that the incident pertaining to his son having a fight with a fellow student happened long ago and just to harass him, the Chief Minister had released the video now and saw to it that a case was booked against him. “We are not afraid of such threats. My son will present himself to the police official concerned,” he said.
Hyderabad,: (IANS) Police in Hyderabad on Tuesday booked Bhagirath, son of Telangana BJP President Bandi Sanjay Kumar, for assaulting his classmate at Mahindra University.
A case was registered at Dundigal Police Station under Cyberabad Police Commissionerate on a complaint by the university authorities.
This development came hours after a video of Bhagirath assaulting a student went viral on social media. The incident reportedly took place a few days ago.
The BJP leader’s son, who is pursuing a management course, was angry with Sriram for allegedly getting close to a sister of his friend. In the video, Bhagirath can be heard hurling abuses at the victim and then assaulting him.
Leaders and supporters of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) widely shared the video and trained guns on the BJP leader. The victim also released a video admitting that he troubled a girl which angered Bhagirath and the latter thrashed him. Sriram said he no longer has any problem with Bhagirath and termed the video of the assault as useless.
Sharmila attacks KCR for choosing Khammam as venue for BRS meeting
Hyderabad (IANS) YSR Telangana Party chief Y.S. Sharmila on Tuesday launched a scathing attack against Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and his BRS, for choosing the much-neglected Khammam district for the party’s national-level meeting.
In a letter to KCR, as the Chief Minister is popularly called, she listed out what she called his false promises, lies and other failures affecting the united Khammam district.
Sharmila said that KCR did not have any moral ground to choose the district as the venue.
YSR Telangana Party chief Y.S. Sharmila on Tuesday launched a scathing attack against Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and his BRS, for choosing the much-neglected Khammam district for the party’s nationallevel meeting.
“It is very clear that, having failed Khammam on every front in last nine years, KCR suddenly woke up to project yet another dishonest impression that he cares for and respects the district. But the people of Telangana are very well aware of this perpetual peddling of lies by him. He has to ask himself if he has the moral right to sound his BRS war cry from a district that bore the brunt of his stepmotherly attention,” she said.
Sharmila stated that Khammam was famed for its political and cultural consciousness and this was the reason why erstwhile TRS received a royal drubbing in the previous elections there. “It is your utter disregard that pushed Khammam into more despair and regression. The result - incomplete irrigation projects, apathy towards spiritual and religious abodes, and uncanny recklessness in dealing with floods, the list is long enough to kill the potential of the united district,” she added.
She presented a list of 10 prominent instances of KCR’s failures towards the district. “On behalf of the people of Khammam, we, the YSR Telangana Party demand that you address these concerns before you begin your march towards the meeting,” she demanded.
She wanted to know why KCR didn’t wage a prolonged war against the merger of seven mandals with Andhra Pradesh.
Hyderabad: With scores of families heading to their native villages before Sankranti and most private vehicles going off the roads, key air pollutants dropped on days leading up to the festival.
The city wore a near-deserted look for at least two days with several corporate and government employees showing a pattern of taking leaves on either side of the Sankranti weekend.
The data by Central Pollution Control Board during the period showed improved air quality at several busy areas in Hyderabad even though the cold kept a steady grip. The PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels, too, were under the safe limit.

In wake of the ODI match between India and New Zealand, scheduled to be held at the Uppal stadium on Wednesday, Vijayanand alleged that Azhar kept the secretary in the dark regarding the arrangements for the match.
“I am not involved in any way in conducting the match. Azhar and his team are making all the arrangements to conduct the match. I am just cooperating to make it a successful one. He sidelined me and did not consult in any decision making process

Is Indian-American Ro Khanna eyeing 2024 US presidential bid?
New York: (IANS) Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna, who said he is weighing a Senate bid in California, may be looking for a potential presidential run in 2024, according to his Democrat allies.
After six years in the US House, Khanna, 46, said he would not run for the White House if President Joe Biden seeks reelection in 2024, the Politico reported.
The report said that Khanna’s recent moves have sparked speculation among Democrats in several key states that the congressman has his eyes set on a higher office.
The Silicon Valley lawmaker has retained consultants who are veterans of New Hampshire’s primary and Nevada’s. He also paid an Iowa firm, before the Democratic National Committee made plans to revoke the state’s first-in-thenation status, according to the news site.
Mark Longabaugh, a Democratic strategist whose firm did media consulting for Khanna last year, told Politico that he thinks Khanna “would be a great US Senator”.
UK passports to become more expensive from Feb
Longabaugh, however added, that in case Biden decides not to re-run, Khanna would be a very “plausible” candidate.
Asserting that he would support Biden if he were to run, Khanna denied that he would go for the White House should Biden ultimately forgo a re-election bid.
“I’ll rule that out definitively,” he had told Politico in an earlier interview.
While talking about his Senate bid, Khanna said: “There are a lot of Bernie (Sanders) supporters and progressives who have reached out to me to

encourage me to look at the race and what I’ve told them is I will do so over the next few months.”
“If President Biden didn’t seek reelection, his name would have to be on the list of top contenders,” Stacey Walker, founder of the Iowa-based firm Sage Strategies, which Khanna paid $8,000 last year, told Politico.
Further, Khanna’s donations prove that he is bolstering his bid to be in the presidential race.
According to Politico, he paid $22,000 last year to Sanders’ former New Hampshire state director, Shannon Jackson; $25,000 to the Sanders-founded progressive group Our Revolution for digital advertising; and $8,000 each to political firms in Nevada and Iowa.

Indian-origin worker suspended in Singapore for alleged fraud
Singapore,: (IANS) A migrant worker advocacy group in Singapore has suspended an Indian-origin worker for alleged misappropriation of funds.
The Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics (HOME) said in a statement that it is suspending its executive director, Deshi Gill, to conduct an internal inquiry, The Straits Times reported. According to preliminary investigations, there was a basis for suspected misconduct, the statement, which was posted on social media on Tuesday, added HOME said its board and staff will provide all necessary information to the police as part of the ongoing investigations.
Gill has been accused of submitting thousands of dollars in claims to HOME without documentary proof of the expenses. The allegations were not substantiated, according to the report.
Gill had been working with HOME since 2017. Before being appointed executive director in July 2021, she was the finance manager.
HOME said it is reviewing its governance controls to ensure similar lapses do not occur again.
London: (IANS) For the first time in five years, the UK government is set to introduce new passport fees for all applications starting February 2023. The price changes, which will come into effect on February 2, will affect those who are renewing or applying for a new passport. The fee for a standard online application made from within the UK will rise from 75.50 pounds to 82.50 pounds for adults and 49 pounds to 53.50 pounds for children. Postal applications will increase from 85 pounds to 93 pounds for adults and 58.50 pounds to 64 pounds for children. The UK Home Office said in a statement that it “does not make any profit from the cost of passport applications”, adding that the changes are subject to Parliamentary scrutiny.
“The new fees will help the Home Office move towards a system that meets its costs through those who use it, reducing reliance on funding from general taxation.” The fees will also contribute to the cost of processing passport applications, consular support overseas, including for lost or stolen passports, and the cost of processing British citizens at UK borders, the Home Office statement read.
New Delhi: (IANS) A Hindu temple in Melbourne was allegedly vandalised by anti-India supporters and defaced with anti-India graffiti, saying ‘Hindustan Murdabad’, media reports said.
The walls of BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Melbourne’s northern suburb of Mill Park were also marked with praises of Indian terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale -- a supporter of the creation of Khalistan for Sikhs -- as a ‘martyr’, The Australia Today reported.
“We are deeply saddened by the anti-India graffiti at the gates of the BAPS Shri
Swaminarayan Mandir in Mill Park, Melbourne, Australia by anti-social elements. The BAPS temple in Mill Park, like all temples of BAPS worldwide, is an abode of peace, harmony, equality, selfless service, and universal Hindu values,” the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha said in an official statement on Thursday. “When I reached the temple today morning, all walls were coloured with graffiti of Khalistani hatred towards Hindus,” a local resident told the paper. Makrand Bhagwat, Hindu Council of Australia’s Victoria state President, told The Australia Today that “any kind of hatred and vandalism against places of worship is not acceptable and we condemn it”. He added that the issue will be raised with the Victorian Multicultural Commission and the Multicultural Minister of Victoria. The BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha expressed gratitude to the governments of Australia and India as well as local community organisations “for their continued support.”

Abu Dhabi: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for “serious and sincere talks” with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on “burning points like Kashmir.” In an interview with Dubai-based Al Arabiya TV, Sharif said that Pakistan has learned its lesson after three wars with India and stressed that now it wants peace with its neighbour.
“My message to the Indian leadership and Prime Minister Modi is that let’s sit down on the table and have serious and sincere talks to resolve our burning points like Kashmir. It is up to us to live peacefully and make progress or quarrel with each other and waste time and resources,” Shehbaz Sharif said.
In an interview with Dubai-based Arabic news channel, Pakistan Prime Minister said, “We have had three wars with India, and they have only brought more misery, poverty, and unemployment to the people.”
“We have learnt our lesson, and we want to live in peace with India, provided we are able to resolve our genuine problems,” Shehbaz Sharif said in the interview that was aired on Monday. Pakistan, which is battling a severe economic crisis, public discontent against the ruling regime due to flour crisis and fuel shortage among others is also faced with rising instances of terror attacks by the proscribed outfit Tehreek-eTaliban Pakistan (TTP), which had ended a ceasefire with the country’s security forces late last year.
“India is our neighbour country, we are neighbours.
Let’s be very blunt, even if we are not neighbours by choice we are there for ever and it is up to us for us to live peacefully and progress or quarrel with each other and waste time and resources. That is up to us,” Shehbaz Sharif said in the interview to Al Arabiya. Shehbaz Sharif also brought up the subject of Kashmir and said “Pakistan wants peace but what is happening in Kashmir should be stopped.”
The Pakistan leader in the interview that was also uploaded on Monday on the @AlArabiya_shows Twitter handle said that both the countries have engineers, doctors, and skilled labourers. “We want to utilise these assets for prosperity and to bring peace to the region so that both nations can grow.”
“Pakistan does not want to waste resources on bombs and ammunition. We are nuclear powers, armed to the teeth, and if God forbids, a war breaks out, who will live to tell what happened?” he said.
India in November last year had lashed out at Pakistan for raking up the issue of Kashmir during a United
Nations debate terming it as “desperate attempts to peddle falsehoods”. “As we meet today to discuss UNSC reforms, a representative of Pakistan has yet again made unwarranted references to Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir remains an integral and inalienable part of India irrespective of what Pakistan’s representative believes,” said Pratik Mathur, Permanent Mission of India to UN, in the right to reply during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meet on UN Security Council.
“Pakistan’s desperate attempts to peddle falsehoods and a bad habit of abusing the sanctity of multilateral forums deserves collective contempt and perhaps sympathies as well,” he added.
Pakistan Foreign Affairs Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had spoken about alleged human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir. India’s response to Pakistan’s claims came during a key UN General Assembly meeting on the United Nations Security Council.
What China Said On Pak’s Abdul Makki Being Named Global Terrorist
HiIndia Newsdesk
Beijing: China on Tuesday defended its move to lift a technical hold leading to the designation of Pakistan-based top Lashkar-e-Taiba leader Abdul Rehman Makki as a global terrorist, saying that listing of terrorists is conducive to enhancing global counterterrorism cooperation and praised Islamabad for backing counter-terrorism efforts.
Makki, the 68-year-old brother-in-law of Jamat-ud Dawa (JuD) chief and Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed, was designated a global terrorist by the UN after China lifted its hold on a joint India-US proposal to blacklist the deputy chief of Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
The UN Security Council’s 1267 ISIL (Da’esh) and AlQaeda Sanctions Committee added Makki to its list of designated terrorists on Monday, subjecting him to an asset freeze, travel ban, and arms embargo, after years of efforts by India and its allies. “Terrorism is the common enemy of humanity,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a media briefing here when asked about China’s decision to lift its objections to India and US move to declare Makki a global terrorist, and whether Beijing will also back similar moves against four other Pakistan based terrorists pending with the Committee.

Farooq Abdullah, former Chief Minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, today said terrorism will continue in Jammu and Kashmir until India initiates dialogue with its “neighbour”. “I am sorry to say, terrorism will stay unless we talk to our neighbour and find a solution,” Mr Abdullah said without naming Pakistan. His remark came hours after Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s “we have learnt our lesson” comment.

Mr Abdullah said India needs to find a solution to the issue and he had given the same message of both countries being “united and of building bridges”, when former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee sought his opinion before travelling to Pakistan in 1999.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has “said openly that war is not a solution for anything,” Mr Abdullah said, remarking that Russia-Ukraine war was a case in point.

JP Nadda Gets Extension
Will Stay BJP Chief Until June 2024
HiIndia Newsdesk
BJP chief Jagat Prakash Nadda will continue to head the party till June next year, the party’s senior strategist Amit Shah announced on the second day of its national executive meet. The term of Mr Nadda -- who took over the party’s top post from Amit Shah in 2020 -- was scheduled to end in January this year. But there was expectation that his term will be extended, with nine state elections lined up this year and general elections in 2024.
“The BJP national executive unanimously decided to extend party president JP Nadda’s term till June 2024,” Amit Shah announced at a press conference. “We are confident that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Nadda, the party will win 2024 Lok Sabha polls with bigger mandate than 2019,” Mr Shah said.
BJP leaders agree that Mr Nadda enjoys the confidence of PM Modi and his good performance has enabled the party to decide on an extension.
Mr Shah today underscored that the BJP won many state elections under Mr Nadda’s leadership and expressed confidence that it would achieve a bigger mandate than 2019 in 2024. He also lauded Mr Nadda’s leadership during the pandemic, saying he connected the party organisation with the service of people.

The book, “A Life in the Shadows A Memoir”, has been written by former RAW chief AS Dulat, who retired from service in 2000. Mr Dulat also said “terrorism (in J&K) will not go away unless we engage with Pakistan”. He, however, added that he would “concede” that the level of militancy has come down due to the “muscular policy” adopted by the current dispensation. Militancy
is local while terrorism comes from across the border, Mr Dulat said.
Asked about the relation between New Delhi and Kashmir, Mr Dulat said the “disconnect with the people has always been there and there has been a lack of trust”.

We hear Jacqueline Fernandez and Elli AvrRam are being brought on board for the second instalment of the franchise that focuses on an animal-lover vigilante. The two actors have been chosen for their martial arts background. A source reveals, “Jacqueline started learning Mixed Martial Arts for Race 3 [2018], and has been practicing it since then. Mrunal Thakur on winning hearts and living every character she plays onscreen M
runal Thakur made quite the splash this year with her performance in the Telugu film Sita Ramam, which proved to be a pan-India hit. Not only was her chemistry with Dulqer Salmaan much-appreciated, but her strong screen presence, and surreal beauty were also talked about. Sita Ramam has no doubt upped her popularity over social media. Some people even compared her to the late Madhubala . Mrunal beams, “I was really happy when people saw me as Madhubala. And I would say, if there is anything made in the future, which is in a way, related to Madhubala, I would love to feature in it. I would love to be a part of it, even if it is a song performance, a play or a movie, or a single scene, I would love to work on it.”
Despite all the adulation she’s been getting over the internet, Mrunal confesses she isn’t social media savvy. While the world may prefer WhatsApp forwards and emojis as expressions of emotions, she prefers hand-written letters just for the sheer magic they hold. “We do sometimes need to take some effort and share our responses or share our love on a handwritten note. I’m waiting for that one love letter,” she giggles. The talk veers to her talented co-star Dulquer Salmaan. Mrunal is all smiles as she talks about him. She mentions that even though Dulquer was a little sceptical about featuring in a romantic film at first, he was committed once he signed on the dotted line. “He’s a phenomenal actor. He’s a wonderful human being, and I can’t wait to share screen space with him again.
Devgn
Ajay Devgn has had a splendid 2022 indeed. With Drishyam 2 smashing all box-office records, he has had a great run and is all set to entertain audiences once again with Raid 2. Raid was produced by Kumar Mangat along with his son Abhishek Pathak and the same team has come on board for the second part as well. Ajay, Ileana D’cruz, and Saurab Shukla were in the lead in Raid, which went on to garner Rs 150 crore at the box office. Comes as no surprise because Ajay Devgn has had a stellar 2022 and 2023 looks equally impressive.
Viraj Ghelani
He made his Bollywood debut with the Vicky Kaushal-starrer Govinda Naam Mera, but the film didn’t alter much in Viraj Ghelani’s life. The actor and social media influencer has taken it upon himself to turn the tide. Rather than waiting in line for offers to come to him, Ghelani conceptualised a story, which is now streaming on YouTube. “Maybe [people] in the industry are now aware that I have acted in this film. [If nothing else], the film has made me feel confident about myself. I received the biggest compliment when after the film’s screening, David Dhawan told me that I did good work post the screening of the film. I have grown up watching his movies, to be complimented by him is a big deal, but having said that, no producers or directors have lined up outside my house waiting to cast me. I had kept low expectations, so I am not disappointed. I do feel my colleagues and friends have begun to respect me more than usual. I do not know if they are serious or just pulling my leg,” says the actor, who plays the dejected friend when his childhood friend finds a fiancé and his priorities change in Dice Media’s Unbachelored.

Preckwinkle announces $23 million for rental aid and services for returning residents
CHICAGO, IL — Today, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, the Housing Authority of Cook County (HACC) and the Cook County Justice Advisory Council (JAC) announced an American Rescue Plan Act-funded reentry initiative that will provide rental assistance and wraparound support services to residents returning to Cook County from periods of incarceration.
“The reentry period is a vital time to lay foundations for future safety and success,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. “Justice involved residents face challenges when they return home to their communities. Access to stable housing and supportive services are key in helping them successfully navigate challenges and achieve their goals.”
The Rental Assistance and Services for Returning Residents initiative will provide up to $15 million dollars in rental assistance and $8 million dollars in wraparound services delivered by qualified community-based service providers over the next three years. The program will support individuals who have returned home to Cook County from prison in the last 24 months. Eligible individuals will be referred by a reentry case manager or a parole officer and will receive rental assistance via direct payments from HACC to their landlord. Residents participating in the program will also receive individualized wraparound services such as case management, education and employment support, healthcare services and legal assistance. Enrolled participants are expected to begin receiving rental assistance and services this summer.

Microsoft’s New, “Significantly Larger” Layoffs To Impact Engineering Jobs
Microsoft Corp. plans to cut jobs in a number of engineering divisions on Wednesday, according to a person familiar with the matter, joining the ranks of technology giants that are scaling back as the industry prepares for a prolonged slump in demand. The magnitude of the cuts couldn’t be learned, but the person, who asked not
to be identified discussing confidential matters, said the reduction will be significantly larger than other rounds at Microsoft in the past year. Those cuts impacted less than 1% of the software giant’s workforce of more than 200,000. Microsoft most recently shrank its workforce in October and July, and has eliminated open positions and paused hiring in various groups. While technology peers such as Amazon. com Inc., Meta Platforms Inc. and Salesforce Inc. have announced cuts by the thousands in the past few months, Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft has so far been taking smaller steps to deal with a worsening global economic outlook and the potential for a protracted slowdown in demand for software and services.

The flagship Ganga Vilas Cruise, which was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week, reached Patna as per schedule and is not stuck in Chhapra, stated Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) on Monday. Chairman, IWAI, Sanjay Bandopadhyaya said the vessel, MV Ganga Vilas, will continue its onwards journey as per schedule.
Pant Survives Car Accident, Expresses Gratitude
New Delhi: The BJP has started a massive two-day strategy session with an eye to the coming elections in nine states this year, which will be seen as the semi-final to the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. The session was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who earlier held a mega roadshow
“Pegasus, Rafale, ED, Central Vista, Reservation and Demonetisation... these were the topics on which the opposition accused the Prime Minister through baseless claims but he had to face the court,” Ms Sitharaman said.
Speaking to the media earlier, senior party leader Ravi Shankar Prasad quoted party chief JP Nadda, who focussed on the country’s achievements since 2014.
Asian Student, 18, Stabbed Multiple Times In Head In US Racist Attack
The Indiana student, who is Asian, was targeted in a seemingly unprovoked attack while riding a bus in the town of Bloomington. Her university has said the violent incident was a case of “anti-Asian hate”, with the community having faced increased violence since the coronavirus pandemic.
A 56-year-old woman, Billie Davis, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing an 18-year-old Indiana University student multiple times in the head on a bus in Bloomington, Indiana.
The victim, who is Asian, was standing and waiting for the exit doors to open on the bus when Davis allegedly began striking her in the head with a folding knife. The attack was unprovoked and there was no interaction between the two women prior to the incident. Davis reportedly told police that she targeted the student because of her race, stating that the student “would be one less person to blow up our country.” It is unclear at this time if Davis will also be charged with a hate crime.
Joshimath crisis deepens: Activists
“I am humbled and grateful for all the support and good wishes. I am glad to let you know that my surgery was a success. The road to recovery has begun and I am ready for the challenges ahead. Thank you to the @BCCI, @JayShah & government authorities for their incredible support,” Pant wrote on Twitter.
“From the bottom of my heart, I also would like to thank all my fans, teammates, doctors and the physios for your kind words and encouragement. Looking forward to see you all on the field,” he added.

work in Joshimath as it accused the Uttarakhand government of adopting a “lackadaisical” approach, even as number of buildings developing cracks in the subsidence-hit town rose to 849, out of which 165 are located in the danger zone. The Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti (JBSS) also raised pitch for scrapping of NTPC’s Tapovan-Vishnugad hydel project.
The development comes on a day the Supreme Court refused to entertain a plea seeking the court’s intervention to declare the crisis in Joshimath a national disaster, saying since the state high court is seized of a “broad range of issues” it should hear it as a matter of principle.
The Supreme Court on Monday sought to know from US tech giant Google if it practised the same regime in India as it has in Europe. “Please reflect on this and come back. We will hear this case on Wednesday,” a Bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud told senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Google. The Bench posted for hearing on January 18 Google’s petition against an order of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) refusing an interim stay on the Competition Commission of India (CCI) order imposing Rs 1,337 crore penalty on it. Singhvi wanted the top court’s intervention, saying the extraordinary directions passed by the CCI had to be complied by January 19.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused the BJP and the RSS of capturing all institutions in the country, and claimed there is “pressure” on the media, Election Commission and the judiciary. He also took a swipe at the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab and asserted that Punjab should be run from Punjab only, not from Delhi.
Addressing the media here, Gandhi charged that the BJP and RSS have captured all the institutions in the country. “Today all the institutions of the country are controlled by the RSS and the BJP. There is a pressure on all institutions. Press is under pressure, bureaucracy is under pressure, the Election Commission is under pressure, they put pressure on the judiciary,” he charged. Normal democratic processes in the country is now missing, he claimed.
LG not my headmaster: Kejriwal teacher training row
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday alleged that Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena suffers from a “feudal mindset” and does not want good education for poor children in the city.
Addressing the Delhi Assembly on the issue of the LG’s alleged interference in his government’s work, Kejriwal said, “Not even my teachers checked my homework as the LG scrutinises my files.” “The LG is not my headmaster. People have elected me as chief minister,” he said. Kejriwal
further claimed the LG told him during a meeting that the BJP won 104 seats in the MCD polls because of him and that the saffron party would win all the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi in the next general elections.
The chief minister alleged that the LG “suffered from a feudal mindset and doesn’t want that the poor children in Delhi get good education”.
“Who is LG, where has he come from? He is sitting on our heads. Will he decide where we should send our children to study? Our country is lagging because of such people with a feudal mindset,” he claimed.“Nothing is permanent in life. We may be in power at the Centre tomorrow, with our LG.

Rahul Gandhi expresses mixed feelings towards cousin Varun Gandhi
New Delhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who is leading the pan-India foot march ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, today said he can “lovingly meet” and hug his cousin Varun Gandhi, who is a BJP leader, but can never support the ideology he subscribes to. He said he’d rather be beheaded than go to the office of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh -- the ideological parent of rival BJP.
“Varun Gandhi is in BJP. If he walks in here, then it might be a problem for him. My ideology doesn’t match his ideology. I can never go to the RSS office, you’ll have to behead me before that. My family has an ideology, a thought system. Varun once adopted, maybe still does, that ideology. He internalised that ideology. I can’t accept that,” he said.
China has announced its first overall population decline in recent years amid an aging society and plunging birthrate. The National Bureau of Statistics reported the country had 850,000 fewer people at the end of 2022 than over the previous year. It counts only the population of mainland China while excluding Hong Kong, Macao and self-governing Taiwan as well as foreign residents. That left a total of 1.411.75 billion, with 9.56 million births against 10.41 million deaths, the bureau said at a briefing on Tuesday. Men also continued to outnumber women by 722.06 million to 689.69 million, the bureau said, a result of the now-abandoned one-child policy and a traditional preference for male offspring to carry on the family name.
“Dawood Ibrahim marries Pakistan Pathan woman, according to NIA charge sheet”

Approximately 77 million Indians have diabetes, and it is estimated that nearly 57 per cent of adults with the disease go undiagnosed. Despite how common the condition is, there are still a lot of myths around it that lead to an inadequate or incorrect understanding of diabetes and how to treat it. It’s crucial to gain a thorough awareness of these little-known facts so that persons with diabetes and those who care for them can have a better understanding of the chronic illness and how to best manage their health.
Hanish Gupta, Consultant Physician and Cardiologist, Life Aid Hospital, Delhi said, “Almost three-fourths of India’s diabetes population have uncontrolled blood glucose levels, and half of them show poor blood pressure control. Further, at least one-third of them have increased cholesterol and lipids. Common reasons for these metabolic abnormalities include nonadherence to treatment, infrequent doctor visits and lack of awareness of long-term consequences of poorly managed diabetes.”
Here are five common myths on diabetes de-bunked:
Sugar alone causes diabetes
Fact: Diabetes is a complex condition related to several factors. These include being overweight or obese, leading a sedentary lifestyle, having an unhealthy diet, and more. It can also be related to genetic factors, such as a family history of having diabetes. While people with diabetes are often advised to control their sugar intake, eating too much sugar alone does not cause diabetes. However, still be mindful of your sugar consumption -- moderation is key. An overall diet high in sugar can mean higher calories, which can contribute to weight gain and consequently increase your risk of having diabetes. On the whole, try to opt for low glycemic index options and foods high in fibre as well, to achieve the right balance.
Diabetes can be cured
Fact: While in rare cases diabetes is reversible, in most cases, diabetes once developed, is a lifelong condition. But living with diabetes doesn’t have to be scary. There are various ways to effectively manage the condition. With proper adherence to prescribed medication and dietary and lifestyle modifications, as well as monitoring of one’s glucose levels, people with diabetes

categories, like type-1 and type-2 and gestational (while pregnant), these cannot be defined as mild or severe. Across all types of diabetes, uncontrolled cases can lead to serious, long-lasting complications. Despite this, people with diabetes can lead healthy, better lives with proper diabetes management, regardless of the type.
Diet and lifestyle changes alone can fully manage diabetes

can live a full life. By discussing with a doctor what diabetes management approach works best in individual cases, people can achieve their target glucose range and achieve optimal health.
Diabetes only affects the body’s blood sugar levels
Fact: Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how the body uses blood sugar. However, diabetes can affect more than just glucose levels. Research suggests that the condition -- especially when uncontrolled -- can cause other related complications, such as increasing the risk of problems relating to the heart, eye, kidney, nerves, or feet. This makes managing diabetes in a timely manner even more important. It is also advisable for people with diabetes to get regular health check-ups and keep an eye on their broader health, to identify and address any problems promptly.
Some types of diabetes are milder than others

Intermittent fasting Cough mixture
Weight is determined by calories consumed minus calories expended. Intermittent fasting can eventually produce a calorie deficit. If you normally eat 4-5 meals and snacks a day (around 2,500- 3,000 calories), then cutting out two meals or snacks (because of intermittent fasting) will probably reduce your total caloric intake. Eventually, weight loss will occur, provided you do not eat extra during mealtimes.
A deficit of 7,700 calories is needed to lose a kilo of weight. You can do this with fasting or by reducing the quantity of food eaten at each meal. Weight loss is faster and more efficient if it is combined with exercise.
Cough mixtures often contain several ingredients in a syrupy base. Also, in children, the dosage schedule and quantity is not based on age but on body weight. Children of the same age can vary widely in weight. Therefore, the dosage has to be carefully calculated. Sometimes, the liquid base is not suitable. Always check with your paediatrician. Use only prescribed cough mixture. Make sure it is from a reputed company and is “ISI” certified.
Fatty liver
Fatty liver is of two kinds, alcoholic and non-alcoholic. You may have the non-alcoholic kind. It may be due to high levels of fat in the blood, diabetes or obesity. In many people, it does not
Fact: While lowering the intake of certain foods that raise your blood glucose and adopting a healthy fitness routine are key steps to manage diabetes, this does not mean that only these steps will be adequate for all people with diabetes to fully manage their condition. Abhijit Pednekar, Medical Affairs Director, Abbott India, commented, “Diabetes management is an ongoing process, which must be holistic and personalised. This involves adhering to dietary and lifestyle changes, prescribed medication, and regular glucose monitoring, which can collectively help individuals manage diabetes. By achieving better control over one’s glucose levels, people can live healthier, fuller lives.”
By understanding facts about the condition, it can make the care journey less complicated. Following medical guidance and working with doctors to understand what works best for individual situations is important, and it can empower people to better manage their diabetes.
cause any problems other than vague abdominal discomfort. However, in others, the liver can gradually get damaged, and it can progress to liver failure. Control your blood sugars if you have diabetes, reduce your weight if obese, control your lipids and monitor your liver functions once a year.
Skipping problems
Skipping is a very efficient way of burning calories. It works out to 10-15 caloriesper minute, even without using a rope. Spot jogging burns around nine calories per minute (60 steps a minute). Climbingstairs is also a very efficient way to burn calories — around eleven calories per minute. These exercises do not need any equipment. Do not exercise even in the house without proper footwear, as it can be hard on the knees.
Over 12,400 people were hospitalised due to flu in the country in the latest week ending January 7, Xinhua news agency reported, citing CDC data. Five influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported this week, for a total of 79 pediatric flu deaths reported so far this season.
The CDC urged the public to get flu shot annually to prevent infection and serious outcomes.
Ten thousand steps a day is the magic number worked out by researchers with data from around 78,000 participants. It is a distance of around eight kilometres, which can take up to an hour and 40 minutes to walk. The time varies with stride and speed. The steps can be taken any time during the day, not necessarily on your morning walk. Walking fewer steps also has benefits: 3,800 steps a day lowers the risk of dementia by 25 per cent; every 2,000 steps can reduce the risk of premature death by 10 per cent. Many people track their steps on wearable fitness devices or smartphones. The faster you walk, the

The faster you walk, the greater the health benefits.
