Deadliest US school killing in nearly a decade prompts Biden call for action HiIndia Newsdesk

A gunman murdered 19 children and two teachers in the deadliest U.S. school shooting for nearly a decade, prompting President Joe Biden to urge Americans to confront the country’s gun lobby and pressure Congress to tighten gun laws. Authorities said Salvador Ramos, 18, on Tuesday shot his grandmother, who survived, before fleeing and crashing his car near Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and killing at least 21 people before being killed, apparently shot by police. Officers saw the gunman, clad in body armor, emerge from the crashed vehicle carrying a rifle. They said he acted alone; the motive was unclear. In a televised speech Biden, his voice rising to a crescendo, said: “As a nation, we have to ask when in God’s name we’re going to stand up to the gun lobby, when in God’s name we do what we all know in our gut needs to be done.” A Democrat, Biden accused the gun lobby of blocking enactment of tougher

The school houses second, third and fourth grade children, meaning pupils would likely have ranged in age from 7 to 10. “My heart is broken today,” school district superintendent Hal Harrell told reporters late in the day, his voice quaking with emotion. “We’re a small community and we need your prayers to get us through this.” The community, deep in the state’s Hill Country region about 80 miles (130 km) In a televised speech Biden, his voice rising to a west of San Antonio, has about 16,000 crescendo, said: “As a nation, we have to ask when in residents, nearly 80% of them Hispanic or Latino, according to U.S. Census data. Gautam Rana as ambassador to Slovakia

US President Joe Biden is set to nominate Indian-American career diplomat Gautam Rana as the new US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Slovakia. In a statement on Wednesday, the White House announced the president’s intent to send Rana’s nomination for further ratification. A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, US - with rank of Counselor, Rana is currently Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy in Algeria and was the Charg d’Affaires ad interim there from August 2020 to February 2022. Rana served as the Deputy Chief of Mission and Charg d’Affaires ad interim at the US Embassy in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Among other positions, Rana was Director for Afghanistan and Pakistan on the National Security Council staff and the Deputy Minister Counselor for Political Affairs at the US Embassy in New Delhi. San Francisco: Twitter agreed to pay $150 million to settle allegations the platform gave advertisers some user information that was supposed to be employed to strengthen account security, US authorities said Wednesday. The Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice accused Twitter of taking phone numbers or email

addresses provided to tighten privacy and then letting advertisers use the details to make money. “Twitter obtained data from users on the pretext of harnessing it for security purposes but then ended up also using the data to target users with ads,” commission chair Lina Khan said in a release. The personal information that users hand over to tech companies, and how that data gets used, is a front of repeated conflict between regulators and powerful firms like Facebook parent Meta, Twitter and others. Clashes over privacy have resulted in periodic suits or settlements but critics have long called for a comprehensive updating of US national rules for how people’s data is handled online.

Student Caught With Firearms Outside Texas School Day After Shooting: Report

HiIndia Newsdesk

Texas: A student in the US state of Texas was caught with firearms outside a high school a day after a deadly shooting at a school in Uvalde killed 19 students and two teachers, media reports said on Wednesday. Police arrested a suspect walking towards a Richardson high school in Texas with what appeared to be a rifle.

This comes a day after an 18-year-old shooter had killed over a dozen students. “On May 25, 2022, at 10:55 AM, the Richardson Police Department received a phone call from a business in the 1500 block of East Spring Valley Road reporting a male holding what appeared to be a rifle. An Islamic State sympathiser planned to murder former US President George W Bush but the plot was discovered by the FBI, US authorities have revealed. The suspect, a resident of Ohio, allegedly sought to have Iraqi operatives smuggled into the US from Mexico for the operation. He is now in custody and appeared at a federal court in Ohio on Tuesday. The FBI used informants and electronic surveillance to foil his plan. According to court documents, the suspect - identified as Shihab Ahmed Shihab, 52 - is an Iraqi national who has been in the US since 2020 and had a pending asylum application. The FBI claims that Mr Shihab told a confidential source, a purported people smuggler, that he belonged to a group known as Al-Raed - Arabic for thunder - which is based in Qatar. In conversations with the FBI source, Mr Shihab said he wished to murder Mr Bush for “killing many Iraqis” and “breaking apart” Iraq.

Tories urged to remove Boris Johnson over Gray report

The report was held up until Scotland Yard had completed its investigations HiIndia Newsdesk

Boris Johnson’s fate rests with Tory MPs following the publication on Wednesday of the much anticipated report by senior civil Sue Gray who carried out a detailed inquiry into Partygate and breaches of Covid rules at 10 Downing Street.

Commenting on the drinking culture in Downing Street when Covid isolation rules applied in the UK, Gray said: “The senior leadership at the centre, both political and official, must bear responsibility for this culture.” Gray’s report was held up until Scotland Yard had completed its investigations. The police have issued 126 Fixed Penalty Notices, including one each to Boris and Sunak. Gray, who looked into 16 events, said she had commented “on what I found to be failures of leadership and judgement in No 10 and the Cabinet Office. The events that I investigated were attended by leaders in government. Many of these events should not have been allowed to happen. “It is also the case that some of the more junior civil servants believed that their involvement in some of these events was permitted given the attendance of senior leaders.”

No plans to offer new financing to Lanka: World Bank The global lender has said that they are reshuffling the already allocated resources to provide essential medicines and other cash assistance to the vulnerable

The World Bank has ruled out bridge financing or new loan commitments to crisis-hit Sri Lanka until the island nation’s economy sets up an adequate macroeconomic policy framework, the global lender has said. The statement by the World Bank came on Tuesday following reports that the Washington-based institution was planning to support Sri Lanka to overcome the financial crisis in the form of a bridge loan or new loan commitments. However, the Bank has said that they are reshuffling the already allocated resources to provide essential medicines and other cash assistance to the vulnerable. Recent media reports have inaccurately stated that the World Bank is planning support for Sri Lanka in the form of a bridge loan or new loan commitments, among other incorrect assertions, the Bank said in a statement.

Troops are to guard government buildings as the ousted prime minister’s supporters were expected to march on parliament

HiIndia Newsdesk

Thousands of supporters of ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan arrived in Islamabad after the Supreme Court allowed a major rally that the government had tried to ban. Pakistani Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Thursday said the

government authorized the deployment of army troops in the capital, Islamabad. It came as thousands of supporters of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan arrived in Islamabad, according to local media, for a major rally and were expected to march on parliament. Sanaullah said troops would protect buildings such as the Supreme Court, the parliament, the prime minister’s house and the presidency. On Wednesday, police fired tear gas and scuffled with stone-throwing protesters

who sought to march to the parliament. Authorities had also blocked all major roads ahead of Wednesday’s rallies, while Khan called on his supporters to circumvent any blockades. The measures were announced following the killing of a policeman on Tuesday during a raid on the home of a key Khan supporter. Supreme Court reverses ban on march. The government had attempted to shut down the planned march, but the Supreme Court gave it the green light later on Wednesday.

China Announces Military Drills Around Taiwan Despite Biden’s Warning The PLA is on high alert and ready to take all necessary measures to resolutely thwart any external forces’ interference and secessionist attempts for “Taiwan independence,” Chinese official said.

HiIndia Newsdesk

B e i j i n g : C h i n a o n We d n e s d ay announced military drills around Taiwan, days after US President Joe Biden said Washington would intervene militarily if Beijing tried to reunify with the island by force. China continues to regard Taiwan as its province even after decades of

separate governance. Chinese President Xi Jinping even threatened to take the island, if needed. “The recent patrol and training exercises by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) around the Taiwan Island were necessary actions against the collusion between Taiwan and the United States,” a Chinese defence spokesperson was quoted as saying by Xinhua on Wednesday.

Tan Kefei, the spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, said that the PLA Eastern Theater Command had recently organized a joint warpreparedness alert patrol and combat training exercises involving troops of multiple services and arms in the waters and airspace around the Taiwan Island. “These are necessary actions taken targeting the collusion between Taiwan and the United States, and conforming to the need of safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Tan said. Seeking “Taiwan independence” is doomed to fail, and so is supporting such actions, Tan said, adding that by playing the “Taiwan card” to contain China, the United States is putting the situation in jeopardy.

New Delhi: Kashmiri separatist Yasin Malik, convicted for terror funding, was Wednesday sentenced to life in prison by a special Delhi court. The National Investigation Agency had demanded the maximum punishment, the death penalty, while the defence pleaded for life imprisonment. “Two life sentences and five punishments of 10 years of rigorous imprisonment each have been awarded. All sentences are to run concurrently. A monetary penalty of over Rs 10 lakh has also been levied,” lawyer Umesh Sharma said. Different prison sentences and fines have been awarded for different cases.

Yasin Malik now has the option to appeal the sentencing in the High Court. Malik had earlier pleaded guilty to all the charges including those under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in a terror funding case. A special NIA court in Delhi pronounced its verdict on the quantum of punishment in the case. During the hearing, Malik had argued why would the Indian government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee give him a passport and allow him to travel and speak around the world if he was a criminal.

ineteen young children and two adults have died in a shooting at a primary school in south Texas. The gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School - which teaches children aged seven to 10 - in the city of Uvalde before he was killed by law enforcement, officials said. The 18-year-old suspect had a handgun, an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and high-capacity magazines, investigators say. The teenager is suspected of shooting his grandmother before the rampage. Local media report he may have been a high school student in the area. Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Chief of Police Pete Arredondo said the shooting began at 11:32 local time on Tuesday, and that investigators believe the attacker “did act alone during this heinous crime”. Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the shooter, whom he named as Salvador Ramos, abandoned a vehicle before entering the school to “horrifically, incomprehensibly” open fire. NBA Warriors coach on Texas school shooting: ‘When are we going to do something?’ who worked at the school, saw Ramos emerge from the vehicle carrying a rifle and wearing body armour, according to Erick Estrada from the Texas Department of Public Safety, who was speaking to CNN. The officer “engaged” the suspect but was unable to stop him, Mr Estrada said. Two more officers from Uvalde Police Department also attempted to

stop Ramos but were unable to do so, and called for back-up. Several of the children who died have been identified. Family members confirmed the deaths of 10-year-olds Xavier Lopez and Amerie Jo Garza in statements on Tuesday night. The Associated Press news agency reports that a US Border Patrol official who was nearby when the shooting began rushed into the school and shot and killed the gunman, who was behind a barricade. Border Patrol is a federal agency that guards US ports of entry. Uvalde, which is fewer than 80 miles from the border with Mexico, is home to a Border Patrol station. Two border agents were reportedly shot in an exchange with the gunman. One agent was shot in the head, officials say, adding that both were now in a stable condition in hospital. According to CBS News, the attacker was wearing body armour as he carried out the attack. Another 18-year-old who is suspected of attacking a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, on 14 May was also wearing body armour and carrying a semi-automatic rifle - both of which are commercially available in the US. The Uvalde Memorial Hospital posted on Facebook earlier that 13 children had been taken to hospital “via ambulances or buses”. A 66-year-old woman and a 10-yearold girl were in a critical condition at a hospital in San Antonio, University Health hospital officials said

I’m sick and tired of it, says Biden

A

shaken and emotional President Biden declared that it is “time to turn this pain into action” on Tuesday night as he addressed the nation following the slaughter of 18 elementary school children and a teacher in Texas. “It’s just sick,” he said of the sorts of weapons that are easily available in the US. Biden spoke for just seven minutes, giving voice to the grief and anger and frustration of many Americans, asking: “Why? Why are we willing to live with this carnage? Why do we keep letting this happen?” The President took direct aim at gun manufacturers and their representatives in Washington, urging politicians to stand up to the power they wield. But he made no specific gun control proposals nor called on Congress to vote immediately on legislation. “The gun manufacturers have spent two decades aggressively marketing assault weapons, which make them the most and largest profit,” Biden said. “For God’s sake, we have to have the courage to stand up to the industry.” He added: “Where in God’s name is our backbone?” The President delivered his remarks from the Roosevelt Room of the White House less than two hours after returning from a five-day trip to South Korea and Japan. Noting his return home, Biden said no other country had the same kind of problem with mass shootings. But while Biden expressed horror and outrage at the shooting, he steered clear of using the moment to wade directly into the gun control debate, which has been one of the country’s most polarising issues for more than a decade. Biden was in the White House, as vice-president, in December of 2012, when 20 young children were killed at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. He spent more than a month developing a list of gun control proposals, only to see most of them flame out in the Senate three months later.

Indian-origin businessman elected as mayor in UK

HiIndia Newsdesk

London: Indian-origin businessman Sunil Chopra has been elected as the mayor of London Borough of Southwark for the second time. Delhi-born Chopra took the oath on Saturday at Southwark Cathedral, Montague Close in Central London. Chopra was the mayor of the London Borough of Southwark in 2014-2015, and deputy mayor in 2013-2014, the first Indian-origin person to hold the prestigious office in the Borough. UK’s Labour Party has gained victory over the Liberal Democrats in London Bridge and West Bermondsey seats under Chopra’s leadership. These seats were held by the opposition party for decades. This victory is important as the London Borough of Southwark Council has only 2 per cent Indian-origin people. Chopra entered UK politics in 2010 and was elected as the mayor of the London Borough of Southwark for the first time in 2014. He has also served as the Deputy mayor three times. His political journey started long before that in the 1970s in Delhi. He became the first president of the College of Vocational Studies, Delhi University in 1972.

Aditi Rao Hydari on North vs South debate

The First Indian Folk Artiste To Walk The Cannes Red Carpet

Mame Khan has lent his voice to songs like “Bawre” from Luck By Chance, “Nakhralo” from Dasvi, as well as “Choudhary” on Coke Studio Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Hina Khan have been regulars at Cannes, representing India at the prestigious film festival. However, this time around, it is a folk artiste who has everyone’s attention. Mame Khan, a Rajasthani singer, made Indians all over proud as he became the first Indian folk artist to open the Cannes red carpet for India. Led by the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Mame Khan was a part of the Indian delegation at Cannes. For his red carpet entry, Khan donned a traditional Rajasthani outfit. He paired a bright pink kurta set with an embroidered blue jacket, designed by Anjuli Chakraborty. A traditional headgear and classy sunglasses completed the look.

Aditi Rao Hydari said she never chooses a film based on its language, but on how wonderful the film, the character and the director is.

She has ‘goosebumps’ as she serves on Cannes 2022 jury:

‘Maybe I don’t give myself enough credit’

Aditi Rao Hydari has shared her two cents on the ongoing North film industry vs South film industry debate. “Maybe because I grew up watching films from different regions and languages as my mother, my family always exposed me to cinema, in my mind there was no difference. It was about directors, content, stories and how it makes you feel. Maybe that is a very simplistic view but today, when I look at the way that cinema is I feel actually that’s a really nice way to be,” she said, adding that people these days tell her how she was one of the firsts to work in films that today are being termed ‘pan-Indian films.’ “I didn’t plan, I did it because I wanted to work in it,” she said, adding that the films in south offered her to be a part of “incredible content, wonderful film, wonderful character, director” as an actor.

A

ctor Deepika Padukone is truly having a great time as she serves on the jury at Cannes 2022. The actor has been a red carpet regular at the prestigious film festival since 2017 but this year is truly special. “The festival management seem so convinced about why they made that decision,” Deepika told Variety in an interview about being on Cannes jury. “It makes me sit back and think sometimes maybe I’ve not given myself enough credit. And that’s okay too, because, I don’t want to be feeling like, like this huge achievement or whatever. If I’ve landed here today, without even realizing it, I must be doing something right. And therefore, I don’t want to think too much about what led me to come here.” The actor has said she wants India to make news beyond red carpet looks at Cannes. The actor is serving on Cannes jury alongside actor-filmmaker Rebecca Hall, Noomi Rapace and Italian actor-director Jasmine Trinca, as well as directors Asghar Farhadi, Ladj Ly, Jeff Nichols and Joachim Trier. The jury will decide which film wins the Palme D’Or. Talking about her own experience as a former model, she said, “Models have always been written off as people who cannot act, either you’re a model or you’re an actor, and the two things in people’s minds cannot coexist. So from beginning my journey like that, to making my debut, and now 15 years in, to having evolved as as a person, in a professional capacity, and a personal capacity, I have learned from every experience.”

Protester painted in Ukraine colours ejected from Cannes red carpet

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker tie Ahead of Cannes visit, Hina Khan is the knot again, this time all ‘glitter and sass’ as she attends in Italy UK Asian Film Festival A trilogy of Kravis nuptials has been

The Ukraine crisis grabbed the spotlight in Cannes on Friday as a semi-naked protester painted in blue and yellow was ejected from the red carpet. The unidentified woman ripped off her gown revealing the Ukrainian flag colours, with the words “STOP RAPING US” emblazoned on her abdomen and red handprints on her buttocks. The woman shouted and security officials quickly wrapped her in a jacket, removing her from the event. Guests looked bemused and the swinging festival music played on. The brief protest took place at the world premiere of Three Thousand Years of Longing, with stars Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton poised to arrive and walk the famous steps of the Palais des Festivals.

Popular actor Hina Khan is all set to grace the Cannes Film Festival for the second time. Before heading to the prestigious event, Hina attended the UK Asian Film Festival, where she was awarded for her film, Lines. Dressed in an off-white Tarun Tahiliani gown, the actor made heads turn. Sharing a few photos from the London streets, Hina Khan posted on Instagram, “Throwing some glitter and sass on the streets of London! #UKAFF2022 closing ceremony.” Her friends from the industry could not hold their excitement as they replied to the post. While good friend Priyank Sharma shared a few white heart emojis, Arti Singh wrote, “Uffffffffff..” Fans lauded her look and called her beautiful. Wearing a sheer off-shoulder gown in corset style, Hina teamed it up with a white jacket with embellished sleeves. Keeping her makeup natural, the actor had her hair tied in a bun. Hina completed her look with contrasting emerald danglers, making her look ethereal.

A smiling officiant looks on. Tamil Nadu BJP chief Annamalai asks DMK govt to reduce VAT on fuel prices BJP President K Annamalai claimed that the Centre, realising that people could not pay beyond a reasonable threshold, had reduced the Excise duty on petroleum products for a second time. HiIndia Newsdesk

Wondering why the ruling DMK kept the state imposed Value Added Tax (VAT) higher than the Central government’s Excise duty, BJP Tamil Nadu unit chief K Annamalai on Tuesday demanded that the DMK government honour its 2021 poll promise by effecting a cut in the prices of petrol by an additional Rs 2 per litre and Rs 4 per litre for diesel immediately. Further, it should announce a subsidy of Rs 100 on cooking gas, he said. The party president claimed that the Centre, realising that people could not pay beyond a reasonable threshold, had reduced the Excise duty on petroleum products for a second time. “But, for the first time, the Tamil Nadu government’s VAT is higher than the

Excise Duty imposed by the Central government,” Annamalai claimed and sought to know how there can be revenue loss for the state if the state tax on petroleum products is higher than the Centre’s Excise Duty. Elaborating, he said while the Centre

kept the Excise Duty on petrol at Rs 19.90 per litre, the state VAT was Rs 21.56; and for diesel the Excise Duty was Rs 15.80 per litre, while the VAT was Rs 17.76, as on May 22. He accused the DMK government of not honouring its poll promise and said after coming to power, the DMK government merely reduced Rs 3 on petrol and had not effected one rupee reduction on diesel. “It had assured to reduce Rs 5 per litre petrol and Rs 4 per litre for diesel. Unlike Tamil Nadu, other states have reduced their taxes on fuel after Centre reduced the Excise Duty. But the DMK government has continued its unjustified activities and held its prestige over the state and its subjects’ interests,” the BJP president said.

IMPERIAL BEACH, CA – San Diego Sector (SDC) Border Patrol encountered multiple swimmers Monday morning. In the early morning of May 16, San Diego Sector Communications notified Imperial Beach Station of a group of people swimming northbound from the international boundary. Agents responded and spotted 11 subjects in the water. The agents made multiple attempts to communicate with the swimmers and have them exit the ocean. Seven of the subjects immediately returned to Mexico while four continued northbound, exited the ocean and

ran eastbound into the Border Field Park where they were eventually apprehended. “Any attempt to swim around the international border is extremely dangerous for even the most experienced swimmers.” said SDC Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke. “Smugglers do not care about the lives they are endangering, they will make them swim at night, ill-equipped for the frigid temperatures and without flotation devices or safety equipment.” The beach near Border Field State Park is known for its dangerous rip currents. This is the same area where two Border Patrol agents saved a Mexican citizen from drowning, in September of 2021. The agents conducted wellness checks and determined that no medical assistance was needed. The four individuals were determined to be Mexican citizens present in the U.S. without authorization and were transported to the Imperial Beach Border Patrol Station for processing.

HEALTH

The world is facing “formidable” challenges, including Covid, the war in Ukraine and monkeypox, the head of the World Health Organization has warned.

T

edros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was speaking in Geneva, where the UN health agency’s experts were discussing the monkeypox outbreak in 15 nations outside Africa. More than 80 cases have been confirmed in Europe, the US, Canada, Australia and Israel. However, the risk to the wider public is said to be low. Monkeypox - the virus that is most common in remote parts of Central and West Africa - does not tend to spread easily between people and the illness is usually mild. Most people who catch the virus recover within a few weeks, according to the UK’s National Health Service. The outbreak has taken scientists by surprise, and UK health officials have issued new advice, saying high-risk contacts of cases should self-isolate for three weeks. Belgium became the first country to announce a three-week quarantine for infected persons on Friday. More confirmed cases are expected to be announced in the UK on Monday, the Guardian newspaper reports. Speaking at Sunday’s opening of his agency’s World Health Assembly, Dr Tedros said: “Of course the [Covid] pandemic is not the only crisis in our world. “As we speak our colleagues around the world are responding to outbreaks of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo, monkeypox and hepatitis of unknown cause and complex humanitarian crises in Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, the Syrian Arab Republic, Ukraine and Yemen. “We face a formidable convergence of disease, drought, famine and war, fuelled by climate change, inequity and geopolitical rivalry,” the WHO head added. The WHO earlier said that a number of other suspected monkeypox cases were being investigated - without naming the countries involved - and warned that more infections were likely to be confirmed. After the outbreak was first identified in the UK, the virus began to be detected across Europe - with public health agencies in Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Italy and Sweden all confirming cases. Further cases were confirmed in Austria and Switzerland on Sunday. The UK Health Security Agency has identified 20 cases so far and its chief medical adviser Dr Susan Hopkins told the BBC’s Sunday Morning programme: “We are detecting more cases on a daily basis.” She said the virus was now spreading in

World faces big challenges over Covid, monkeypox and wars - WHO the community - with cases detected which have had no contact with anyone who has visited West Africa, where the disease is endemic. But the risk to the general population remains “extremely low”, with cases so far mostly found in some urban areas and among gay or bisexual men, Dr Hopkins said. Although there is no specific vaccine for monkeypox, several countries have said they are stocking smallpox vaccines, which are about 85% effective in preventing infection because the two viruses are quite similar.

What is monkeypox and how do you catch it?

How dangerous is it? Most cases of the virus are mild, sometimes resembling chickenpox, and clear up on their own within a few weeks. Monkeypox can sometimes be more severe, however, and has been reported to have caused deaths in west Africa.

Are gay men at greater risk?

Cases of monkeypox - a rare, little-known disease - are being investigated in European countries including the UK, the US, Canada and Australia.

How common is monkeypox? Monkeypox is caused by the monkeypox virus, a member of the same family of viruses as smallpox, although it is much less severe and experts say chances of infection are low.It occurs mostly in remote parts of central and west African countries, near tropical rainforests. There are two main strains of virus - west African and central African. Two of the infected patients in the UK travelled from Nigeria, so it is likely that they are suffering from the West African strain, which is generally mild. Another case was a healthcare worker who picked up the virus from one of the patients.More recent cases do not have any known links with each other, or any history of travel. It appears they caught it in the UK from spread in the community. The UK Health Security Agency says anyone with concerns that they could be infected should see a health professional, but make contact with the clinic or surgery ahead of a visit.

What are the symptoms? Initial symptoms include fever, headaches, swellings, back pain, aching muscles. Once the fever breaks a rash can develop, often beginning on the face, then spreading to other parts of the body, most commonly the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. The rash, which can be extremely itchy or painful, changes and goes through different stages before finally forming a scab, which later falls off. The lesions can cause scarring. The infection usually clears up on its own and lasts between 14 and 21 days.

How do you catch it? Monkeypox can be spread when someone is in close contact with an infected person. The virus can enter the body through broken skin, the respiratory tract or through the eyes, nose or mouth. It has not previously been described as a sexually transmitted infection, but it can be passed on by direct contact during sex. It can also be spread by contact with infected animals such as monkeys, rats and squirrels, or by virus-contaminated objects, such as bedding and clothing.

Although some of the cases have been seen in gay and bisexual men, anyone who comes into close contact with someone who has monkeypox could potentially get the virus. The UK Health Security Agency has said “a notable proportion” of the recent cases in the UK and Europe have been found in gay and bisexual men “so we are particularly encouraging them to be alert to the symptoms and seek help if concerned”.

How common are outbreaks? The virus was first identified in a captive monkey and since 1970 there have been sporadic outbreaks reported across 10 African countries. In 2003 there was an outbreak in the US, the first time it had been seen outside Africa. Patients caught the disease from close contact with prairie dogs that had been infected by small mammals imported into the country. A total of 81 cases were reported, but none resulted in deaths. In 2017, Nigeria experienced the largest known outbreak. There were 172 suspected cases and 75% of victims were men between 21 and 40 years old.

What is the treatment? Outbreaks can be controlled by infection prevention. Vaccination against smallpox has been proven to be 85% effective in preventing monkeypox. The UK has bought doses of the smallpox vaccine, but it is not clear how many jabs might be given. Antiviral drugs may also help.

The majority were tilted towards Royal Challengers Bangalore in anticipation of another Kohli run feast. Hope gave way to despair as Kohli fell for 25 but Rajat Patidar made sure there was life beyond RCB’s starry toporder. The 28-year-old Indore batter came in as a replacement for the injured Luvnith Sisodia after going unsold at the mega auction. His 112 not out off 54 balls revived memories of Manvinder Bisla whose 89 in the IPL 2012 final turned it around for Kolkata Knight Riders. Patidar added his name to the list of unknowns making an impact in crunch situations. The Faf du Plessis-Kohli-Glenn Maxwell trio contributed 34 but Patidar and Dinesh Karthik took RCB to 207. It proved too much for Lucknow Super Giants as they fell short of the target by 14 runs. RCB, still searching for their first IPL crown, will meet Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad on Friday for a berth in the final.

o-Wilfried Tsonga, a former Australian Open runnerup and world number five, bid an emotional goodbye to tennis at Roland Garros on Tuesday after losing in the first round to Casper Ruud. The 37-year-old Tsonga, who announced last month he would retire following the French Open, was beaten 6-7 (6/8), 7-6 (7/4), 6-2, 7-6 (7/0) by the Norwegian eighth seed. “I hope the world can soon find as much peace I found today. Thank you Roland Garros. Thank you Mister Tennis. I love you,” said Tsonga. With a brass band blasting out ‘La Marseillaise’ at intervals, Tsonga delighted the crowd on Court Philippe Chatrier by taking the opening set, but Ruud, who won the Geneva title last week, hit back to claim the next two sets. The Frenchman broke for a 6-5 lead in the fourth set but was unable to serve out, immediately calling for the trainer before the tie-break and taking a medical timeout for treatment to his right shoulder.

Naomi Osaka says she is “leaning more towards not playing” at Wimbledon again because the WTA and ATP have said they will not award ranking points this year after the All England Club banned players from Russia and Belarus because of the invasion of Ukraine. The four-time Grand Slam champion and former top-ranked player sat out Wimbledon in 2021 as part of a mental health break following her withdrawal at the French Open. After losing in the first round at Roland Garros on Monday, Osaka said the tennis tours’ move to withhold ranking points from Wimbledon “is kind of affecting my mentality” and she is “not 100% sure if I’m going to go there.”

Shastri, who worked closely with Hardik during his tenure as head coach, said Hardik always wanted to bat higher up the order and captaincy has only done wonders to his batting. “He has tremendous confidence in his ability. He reads the game extremely well. He always wanted to bat higher up the order He can bat like a No. 4 batter. He reads the situations of the game, he reads the conditions, he knows his role and what is required and for captaining the side, the added responsibility has done wonders to his batting,” Shastri added. Shastri lauded Hardik for taking a backseat and let Miller do the heavy-lifting during their partnership. Notably, when 17 runs were needed off 6 deliveries, Miller hit 3 sixes in the first 3 balls of the final over to take Gujarat past the finish line.

All the Louis Vuitton looks from Deepika Padukone’s wardrobe that we want in ours

After all, no one does refined elegance quite like Louis Vuitton—music to the ears of Padukone, a self-professed connoisseur of classics. Further proof could be found when she was chosen among a roster of select international names to front the pre-fall 2020 campaign—the first Bollywood star to lay claim to this honour. Sitting tall in quilted boots and a mini belt bag threaded around her lithe waist, the allLV manifesto would prove prophetic in the years to come. Flip through her style files for the Gehraiyaan promotions, and you’ll find the star clad in the fashion house’s iconic Damier checkerboard print from head-to-toe in the form of a cropped jacket and co-ordinated skirt. With LV-embossed hoops and a playful sash of white socks peeking above brown boots, the star offered the no-stress dressup formula that you’ll want to keep close for the summer. The cropped vest jacket, dramatic ruffled collar and olive-hued bermuda shorts might come fresh off the spring/summer 2022 runways, but the star has been known to give the season’s trends her own discerning take—as expressed in the bold knee-highs that she rounded out the look with.

Opening weekend collections might determine a debutante’s fate at the box office, but it is that moment when they reach for the iconic LV monogram that you truly know: a star is born.

Indian-Born Brothers’ New Startup Offers Thrill Of Better Office Wi-Fi

A

nil and Sunil Varanasi could have done whatever they wanted. The brothers, born in India, moved to Virginia when they were 12 and 14, respectively, then sped through high school and graduated at 16 and 17. For fun, they hacked into their Xbox to make it do their bidding, and built and sold custom PCs. Once in college at George Mason University, the Varanasis thrived in classes ranging from biochemistry to economics to computer engineering. They seemed set for a bright future in a buzzy field such as cryptocurrency or smartphone-enabled food delivery. Instead, the teenagers chose to focus on improving office internet and Wi-Fi networks. While still in college, they started a company to install networking equipment for businesses, and had 50 employees and 100 customers by the time they graduated. That experience convinced them that what really had to be done was a redesign of the entire idea of networking equipment and the software that runs it. “We think internet service should be exactly like electricity and telephones,” says Anil, the chief executive officer of Meter Inc., the company that resulted from their insight. People who’ve never had to install an office internet network might be surprised to learn it isn’t already that simple. Networking generally requires a company to buy its own complicated gear, and then manage that equipment along with a relationship with one or more internet service providers. This situation has persisted even as computing, data storage, and other aspects of digital life have evolved to be sold via the cloud on a rental basis.

All MPs need to inform the Ministry of External Affairs three weeks before any foreign trip and seek political clearance, said government sources.

Meter offers to charge customers a monthly fee of 15 per square foot of office space. A customer sends a floor plan; Meter determines what gear the office will need-it says it’s uniquely equipped to do this because it makes all of its own hardware and softwareand sets up the connections through its relationships with internet providers. This pitch has suggested enough of innovation that the startup has raised $50 million in funding from some of Silicon Valley’s biggest names, including Patrick and John Collison (Stripe); Sam Hinkie (87 Capital); Sam Altman (OpenAI); Diane Greene (co-founder of VMware); Egon Durban ( Silver Lake); and Sequoia Capital. Meanwhile, Meter has acquired hundreds of customers in the US, despite operating in relative obscurity. Because companies generally manage their own office networking, handing control to a startup has sometimes been

because we wanted to learn everything about the manufacturing process,” Sunil says. “I didn’t have a bed, because it was covered in circuit boards, so that we could test our software.” When they returned to the US in 2016, the brothers first catered to other startups, which were easier targets than more established companies that had already bought a lot of networking equipment. Over time, Meter managed to attract larger businesses, offering to buy and replace their existing gear to help seal deals. Meter now says it manages “millions of square feet” of space for a a tough sell. “I was very skeptical and told variety of companies. But it will likely them that I couldn’t imagine using their struggle for some time to persuade larger companies that have already made service,” says the head of security at a huge networking investments to buy its business software maker, who requested service. “I don’t think there are any crisis anonymity because his company sees meetings taking place right now at Cisco,” disclosing details about its technology says the once-skeptical customer at the use as a security concern. When his business software company. company tripled its office space, he T he widespread pandemic-era decided to work with Meter because it reassessment of how offices function seemed like it would be cheaper and should work to Meter’s advantage. less of a hassle. “I would have had to Because it makes all the upfront hire someone to install all the stuff and investment in equipment and setup, would have been on the hook for running there’s less financial risk in hopping from it myself again, which I didn’t really have office to office. Real estate companies the time or interest in doing.” such as Tishman Speyer have started to The deceptively simple idea required a team with Meter so tenants who move significant technological undertaking. into a new office can simply say they’d In 2014 the Varanasis sold their first like internet service as part of their networking company and moved into a single room in a hostel in Shenzhen, contract and have it turned on right away. “The infrastructure really should China, where they sought manufacturing go with the building,” says OpenAI’s partners to build the routers and switches they’d need. “We’d spend all day at the Altman, who invested in Meter, “and not factory and sleep on the factory floor, the customer.”

Did Rahul Gandhi Need “Clearance” For UK Trip? Government Vs Congress

R

ahul Gandhi did not take “political clearance” from the government before flying to London, which all MPs need to do, sources claimed today. All MPs need to inform the Ministry of External Affairs three weeks before any foreign trip and seek political clearance, said government sources, adding that they need to post details on the foreign ministry website. But the Congress MP did not do so, the sources said. They said invites to MPs from foreign governments or institutions need to be routed through the foreign ministry. “If the invitation comes directly, then political clearance is needed from the foreign ministry. All MPs have been asked to ensure that they do so before travelling abroad,” said official sources. The protocol circulated among MPs says members have to apply for political clearance on the foreign ministry website three weeks in advance. “All invitations from any foreign source, namely, government of any country or

from MEA will enable them to make a recommendation to the Member taking into account the stature of the foreign entity extending the invitation, the appropriateness of the forum, public interest, etc,” they say, adding that it applies for private visits too. The Congress, lashing out at media reports quoting sources, said MPs “don’t need” any such political clearance and blamed the reports on “PMO (Prime Minister’s Office) WhatsApp suggestions” sent to various channels. “MPs don’t need political clearance from the PM or government unless they are part of an official delegation. Please don’t blindly follow the PMO WhatsApp suggestions sent to TV channels,” wrote Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala on Twitter. Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the UK has made headlines because of his remarks criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government at an event at Cambridge. PM Modi is creating a vision of India that is not inclusive and excludes huge chunks of the country’s population, the Congress leader said on Monday.

Visa scam: ED files case against Karti

Amaravati: Several BJP leaders, including its national secretary Sunil Deodhar and workers were taken into police custody when they sought to march to the Jinnah Tower Centre in Guntur on Tuesday evening demanding that it be renamed after former President APJ Abdul Kalam. After a meeting of the party’s youth wing BJYM, the BJP leaders and workers tried to take out a protest march to Jinnah Tower but police foiled it and detained them. For the past few months, the BJP and other Hindu organisations have been demanding that the historic Jinnah Tower be renamed but the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy government paid no heed. On Tuesday, Mr Deodhar, the co-in-charge of the party for the state, was in the city and sought to lead the protest. The BJP demanded that the Jinnah Tower be renamed as A P J Abdul Kalam Tower.

ormer Union Minister Kapil Sibal revealed today that he has quit the Congress party, dropping a bombshell moments after filing his nomination papers for Rajya Sabha as an independent candidate supported by the Samajwadi Party. “I had resigned from the Congress party on May 16,” Kapil Sibal told reporters, slipping in information that had stayed concealed since the Congress “Chintan Shivir” or strategy meet a week ago. “I am no longer a serious Congress leader,” he quipped, when bombarded with questions. Mr Sibal resigned a day after the Congress brainstorming session held to discuss a roadmap for the party’s revival after a series of devastating election defeats. He had decided to stay away from the big meet and was no longer a part of the Congress’ advisory groups. “I have filed my papers as an independent candidate. It is important to be an independent voice in parliament. If an independent voice speaks up then people will believe it is not linked to any political party,” Mr Sibal said.

Dawood is in Karachi: Death Penalty Demand For gangster’s nephew to ED Yasin Malik The statements of two witnesses are part of the charge-sheet filed by the agency against Nawab Malik in money laundering case pertaining to a property of the fugitive gangster HiIndia Newsdesk

A witness in a money laundering case against Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik has stated before the ED that fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim is based in Pakistan’s Karachi city, while another witness said he was told that Dawood would send Rs 10 lakh to his siblings every month. The statements of the two witnesses are part of the chargesheet filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against Malik in the money laundering case pertaining to a property of Dawood Ibrahim. In his statement before the probe agency, Alishah Parkar, son of the gangster’s sister Haseena Parkar, said Dawood Ibrahim is his “mamu” (maternal uncle) and used to reside on the 4th floor of Dambarwala Building (Mumbai) around 1986.

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency has demanded the death penalty for convicted Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik, who had earlier pleaded guilty to all the charges including those under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), in a terror funding case. A Delhi court will today pronounce its verdict on the quantum of punishment in the case. Arguments have been concluded in the case and the court will give its verdict at 3:30 pm today. The defence has asked for life imprisonment instead of the death penalty. “I was arrested within 30 minutes of Burhan Wani’s encounter. Atal Bihari Vajpayee allotted me a passport and India allowed me to make a statement because I was not a criminal,” Yasin Malik said in court.

The ED has registered a money laundering case against Congress MP Karti Chidambaram and others in the alleged scam pertaining to the issuance of visa to 263 Chinese nationals in 2011 when his father P Chidambaram was the home minister, officials said on Wednesday. The federal agency has filed its case under the criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) taking cognisance of a recent first information report by the CBI in the same case, they said.

North Korea fires missiles hours after Biden leaves Asia

HiIndia Newsdesk

North Korea fired three ballistic missiles early on Wednesday morning, South Korea’s military has said. Authorities in Seoul said the missiles were fired in the space of less than an hour from the Sunan area in Pyongyang. It comes just a day after US President Joe Biden left the region, following a trip that saw him vowing to bolster measures to deter North Korea. North Korea has been test-firing a flurry of ballistic missiles since the beginning of this year. Japan confirmed at least two launches happened on Wednesday but acknowledged there may have been more. Japan’s Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi said first missile flew about 300km (186 miles) with a maximum altitude of around 550 km, while the second, reaching as high as 50 km, travelled around 750 km. Mr Kishi criticised the launches, saying they were “not acceptable” adding that it would “threaten the peace, stability and safety of Japan and the international community”. South Korea’s National Security Council called the test a “grave provocation”, the presidential office said.
