Ready to support India in diversifying its energy imports: White House HiIndia Newsdesk
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki
US Senator welcomes India’s condemnation of Bucha killings
Why US Is Targeting Putin’s Daughters
HiIndia Newsdesk
The United States is ready to support India in diversifying its energy imports, the White House said Wednesday, reiterating its desire that New Delhi does not purchase oil from Russia amid American sanctions on Moscow for invading Ukraine. We do not think India should accelerate or increase imports of Russian energy and other commodities even as, obviously, those decisions are made by individual countries, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters at her daily news conference. And (the US is) also making clear that we stand ready to support India as in any efforts to diversify its imports and serve as a reliable supplier even as they’re
only importing about one to two per cent of their oil from Russia, she said in response to a question. US Deputy National Security Advisor Daleep Singh was in New Delhi last week to discuss with Indian officials on the Russian sanctions. We have a range of ways to communicate and engage. And obviously, sending our Deputy National Security Advisor is an example of that. But clearly, our preference would be to have a confirmed ambassador, she said. The nomination of the US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, the Mayor of Los Angeles, is pending in the US Senate as he does not have enough votes for his confirmation.
Will Boycott “A Number Of G20 Meetings” If Russia Attends: US US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said, “President Biden’s made it clear, and I certainly agree with him, that it cannot be business as usual for Russia in any of the financial institutions.” HiIndia Newsdesk
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Wednesday that Russia should be expelled from the Group of 20 major economies forum, and the United States will boycott “a number of G20 meetings” if Russian officials show up. Her comments at a U.S. House Financial Services Committee hearing raised questions about the G20’s future role in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Washington: The United States’ latest round of sanctions on Russia includes two new targets: Russian President Vladimir Putin’s two adult daughters, Katerina and Maria, who U.S. officials believe are hiding Putin’s wealth. His other daughter Maria Vladimirovna Vorontsova leads government-funded programs that have received billions of dollars from the Kremlin toward genetics research, and are personally overseen by Putin, the United States said. “We have reason to believe that Putin, and many of his cronies, and the oligarchs, hide their wealth, hide their assets, with family members that place their assets and their wealth in the U.S. financial system, and also many other parts of the world,” a senior U.S. administration official told reporters. “We believe that many of Putin’s assets are hidden with family members, and that’s why we’re targeting them,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
USA News in Brief North Korea Could Hold Nuclear Test Next Week: US Envoy
“President Biden’s made it clear, and I certainly agree with him, that it cannot be business as usual for Russia in any of the financial institutions,” Yellen said. “He’s asked that Russia be removed from the G20, and I’ve made clear to my colleagues in Indonesia that we will not be participating in a number of meetings if the Russians are there,” Yellen said.
It’s becoming difficult for Putin to fund Ukrainian war: White House
Washington: Pyongyang is ignoring US overtures for talks and could be planning its first nuclear weapon test in nearly five years for its April 15 holiday, the State Department’s top North Korea envoy said Wednesday. Sung Kim, the Special Representative for North Korea Policy, said Washington thinks Pyongyang could be planning a big show of its growing nuclear weapons capacity on the annual holiday next week, which will celebrate the 110th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il Sung, who founded the modern Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Pentagon Says Ukrainian Soldiers Getting Drone Training In US HiIndia Newsdesk
Washington: Ukrainian soldiers are being trained in the United States to operate the deadly Switchblade drones that Washington is supplying to Kyiv, a Pentagon official said Wednesday. Defense Department spokesman John Kirby said it was a “very small” number of Ukrainian troops who were already present in the US before Russia invaded their country. “We took the opportunity, having them still in the country, to give them a couple of days’ worth of training on the Switchblades, so they can go back... to train others in the Ukrainian military,” according to Kirby.

It is becoming more and more difficult for Russian President Vladimir Putin to fund his war in Ukraine, the White House said Tuesday adding that more tough sanctions are to be announced on Wednesday. Meanwhile, American Defence secretary Lloyd Austin said, “It is not in India’s best interest to continue investing in Russian military equipment.” What we are doing and we’re already seeing effectively happen is the financial system in Russia is near the brink of collapse. It’s not in India’s best interest to continue investing in Russian military equipment: US their economy. Private sector businesses are pulling out of the country. It is more and more difficult for President Putin to fund this war every single day. That has an impact, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters at her daily news conference. But what we’re also doing is providing a historic amount of military and security assistance, which is what they’ve been using effectively over the last few weeks to fight this war and push back the Russians, she said.

Vidya cited Sridevi as an example of someone who could seem perfectly at home in any kind of film. She also spoke about why she is hesitant about playing ‘sexy’ characters on screen again. In an interview with Galatta Plus, Vidya said that she wasn’t feeling particularly passionate about the films Heyy Babyy and Kismat Konnection, which she hasn’t had ‘the guts’ to revisit. But working on them flipped a switch in her mind, and she decided that she would only take up roles that excite her. She said, “I also developed a respect for people who do the so-called commercial… go through that rigmarole, and do it with complete conviction. Look at what all Sridevi has done. But not in one film will you find that conviction waning. She could be doing the most ridiculous things.” Vidya also spoke about having appeared in the Tamil remake of Pink, Nerkonda Paarvai, a decision that also has a Sridevi connection. “I didn’t even give it any thought,” Vidya said. “Sridevi had just passed away, and I met Boney ji, who said, ‘I want you to do a special appearance in my film’.

Otoniel was captured by Colombian forces in October
Hungary said on Wednesday it was prepared to pay roubles for Russian gas, breaking ranks with the EU which has sought a united front in opposing Moscow’s demand for payment in the currency. Hungary will pay for shipments in roubles if Russia asks it to, Prime Minister Viktor Orban told a news conference on Wednesday. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned Europe it risks having gas supplies cut unless it pays in roubles as he seeks retaliation over western sanctions for Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
Colombia’s Supreme Court has approved the extradition of the leader of the country’s largest gang to the US. Dairo Antonio Úsuga, better known as Otoniel, led the Gulf Clan cartel and is wanted in the US on drug trafficking charges. His capture in October, compared to the fall of Pablo Escobar by President Ivan Duque, ended a seven-year manhunt. The court’s decision, announced on Twitter, ends attempts by Otoniel’s lawyers to halt his extradition. Colombia’s Justice Minister Wilson Ruiz had pledged to extradite Otoniel to the US after his capture last year, and Justice Department officials in Washington made a formal request in November.
As of February 28, travelers with a pre-arrival antigen test are permitted to enter Canada. Previously, travelers had to have a molecular test, such as a PCR test, performed within 72 hours of their scheduled flight or border crossing. All visitors to Canada over the age of five still require a Covid-19 test before crossing the border. The new regulations require incoming travelers to provide an antigen test result obtained within one day of their scheduled flight or arrival at the border. The test cannot be performed at home; it must be performed by a laboratory, healthcare entity, or telehealth service that is licensed in the country where it was purchased.
Energy strategy: UK plans new nuclear reactors to boost production

Up to eight more nuclear reactors could be delivered on existing sites as part of the UK’s new energy strategy.
he plan, which aims to boost UK energ y independence and tackle rising prices, also includes plans to increase wind, hydrogen and solar production. But experts have called for a bigger focus on energy efficiency and improving home insulation. Consumers are facing soaring energy bills after the Russian invasion of Ukraine pushed gas prices even higher. Under the government’s new plans, up to 95% of the UK’s
electricity could come from lowcarbon sources by 2030. It outlines, for example, the hope of producing up to 50 gigawatts ( G W ) of e n e r g y t h rou g h offshore wind farms, which the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (Beis) said would be more than enough to power every home in the UK. But one of the big points of contention is thought to have been the construction of onshore wind turbines. The government announced that
a new body called Great British Nuclear will also be launched to bolster the UK’s nuclear capacity, with the hope that by 2050 up to 24 GW of electricity will come from that source - 25% of the projected electricity demand. It has said the focus on nuclear will deliver up to eight reactors overall, with one being approved each year until 2030. It also confirmed advanced plans to approve two new reactors at Sizewell in Suffolk during this parliament.

ansiya VP was three years old when her mother signed her up for Bharatanatyam, a centuries-old Indian classical dance form that originated in temples. It was an unusual choice for a Muslim girl from Malappuram, a district in the southern state of Kerala. But Mansiya’s mother, Amina, was determined. So her two daughters learnt not just Bharatanatyam, but also other classical dances such as Kathakali and Mohiniyattam. It wasn’t easy - conservative Muslims from the community said the girls shouldn’t learn “Hindu dances”. The family’s persistence often made headlines. But last week - 24 years after she first donned a pair of Bharatanatyam anklets - Mansiya was in the news again. This time, it was because of a viral Facebook post she wrote after a Kerala temple refused to let her perform at its annual festival. The reason: she wasn’t Hindu. The organisers had earlier accepted her application, but temple authorities, who barred her from dancing at the venue, defended their decision, saying they had to follow tradition. The incident has become yet another fault line in an increasingly polarised country. But an unfazed Mansiya wrote in her post: “I have reached here after suffering far worse discrimination. This is nothing to me.” India’s religious complexity has often thrown up fascinating contradictions - a 2021 Pew study found that the majority of people across faiths support both religious tolerance and religious segregation. Syncretism has long been enmeshed in daily life

Their music is often intensely devotional and many of them, such as Ustad Bismillah Khan and Allauddin Khan were devotees of Saraswati, the goddess of learning, while practising their own faith. Mansiya reckons that growing up, she and Rubiya - fondly called the “VP sisters” “must have danced at almost every temple in Malappuram district”. They were greeted with love and appreciation everywhere. The only jarring instance she can remember is at one temple where a committee member objected to them because they were Muslims. “But after our performance, he was so moved he came and hugged us,” she recalls. She had been practising for weeks when another organiser called and told her she couldn’t perform as the temple didn’t allow “nonHindus” to enter. Most Hindu temples in India allow people of all faiths to enter and even pray. But several - including some famous ones - insist that only Hindus can go beyond a point into areas where rituals take place.

People have to be able to get to work, school, places of worship, medical offices, grocery stores. The goal of this program is to help make those moves easier.” Fifth Third Bank and Onbe, a payment issuing platform, are providing the physical prepaid cards and payment processing for the program with no transaction fees, Lightfoot’s office said. The cards are set to be distributed in May to “five successive monthly waves of 10,000 residents.”

Plastic Bag Ban In NJ, New Law Take Effect On May 4 HiIndia Newsdesk
JERSEY CITY, NJ – New Jersey’s upcoming single-use plastic bag ban has been billed as “the strictest in the nation,” going further than similar laws in California and New York. But the law still has plenty of exceptions, allowing for New Jersey residents to keep using most types of single-use plastics. The law that will take effect on May 4 applies to single-use plastic shopping bags — the bags that you’ll find at the
end of grocery store registers, or what your shopping mall purchase gets stuck in before it’s handed over. Garbage bags, pet waste bags, and Ziploc-style bags are all still allowed in New Jersey. And unlike in other states, stores will not have the option of charging a nominal fee to still provide you with a plastic bag. No single-use plastic bags can be used at store registers, free or
paid. The paper bag ban, another part of New Jersey’s bag-ban law that’s unique, has its share of exceptions too. Paper bags are not allowed to be sold or given out in grocery stores larger than 2,500 square feet. That average grocery store is over 30,000 square feet, so the size restriction means even the smallest Trader Joe’s will be banned from doling out brown paper bags. Plastic bag ban begins May 4th
Stop & Shop in Union. Beginning May 4, 2022, grocery stores, food service businesses and other retail stores in New Jersey are prohibited from providing or selling customers with single-use plastic carryout bags. And retail stores can also keep using paper, so stores like PetSmart and Michael’s can pivot to paper bags if they want, but Stop and Shop can’t.

s it really possible to be addicted to a smartphone? Smartphone overuse can manifest in many ways. Maybe you regularly stay up late scrolling through Instagram or TikTok. Or the allure of your smartphone makes it difficult to be fully present for yourself, your work or those around you. Phone or screen overuse isn’t officially recognised as an addiction (or a substance use disorder, as experts call it) in the American Psychiatric Association’s official manual of mental disorders. But “there is a growing number of mental health specialists who recognise that people can get addicted to their smartphones,” said Anna Lembke, an addiction expert and a professor of psychiatry and behavioural sciences at Stanford University, US. Lembke noted that an addiction is partly defined by the three Cs: Control: Using a substance or performing a behaviour (such as gambling) in ways that would be considered out of control or more than intended. Compulsion: B eing intensely mentally preoccupied with and using a substance (or performing a behaviour) automatically, without actively deciding to do so. Consequences: Continued use despite negative social, physical and mental consequences. Many of us can recognise some of these in our own phone use. Regardless of how you define it, both experts say there are ways to reduce your phone use.

Is it possible to get addicted to smartphone?
Are there any proven ways to treat phone or screen overuse?
Screen fast
One approach Lembke has found to be highly effective in her clinical practice is to avoid using all screens, not just phones, for anywhere from a day to a month. This strategy hasn’t been formally studied in screen overuse patients in particular, she said, but the evidence for its use with other types of addictions, such as alcoholism, suggests
it can be effective. How long you decide to fast will depend on your level of use, Lembke said. Of course, a true fast may not be practical for many people, whether because of work or personal reasons, but the goal is to get as close to full avoidance as possible. L e m b k e w a r n e d t h at m a ny people — even those with milder screen overuse — may notice withdrawal symptoms initially, such as irritability or insomnia, but that over time they’ll start feeling better. In her 25 years of seeing patients, Lembke has noticed that by the end of a one-month fast, the majority of her patients usually “report less anxiety, less depression, sleeping better, more energy, getting more done, as well as being able to look back and see in a more clear-eyed way exactly how their screen use was affecting their lives,” she said. Those who
Eating Avocado Twice a Week Can Help You Stay Heart Healthy

The studyTrusted Source, published Wednesday in the Journal of the Eating avocados twice a week may help improve your overall American Heart Association, is heart health, according to a new study. This was especially believed to be the first to identify a link between higher avocado consumption true for people who subbed avocado for less heart-healthy and fewer cardiovascular events like foods like butter or cheese. The researchers evaluated the health of over 68,000 women and over 41,700 men for 30 years. At the start of the study, the participants did not have cancer, coronary heart disease, or a history of stroke. The participants completed questionnaires regarding their food consumption every four years. One of the questions specifically asked how
fast for less than a month will still see benefits, she said, although the benefits most likely won’t be as dramatic. After abstaining from screens for a period, she recommended reflecting on how you want your relationship with your devices to look like going forward.
Set rules
Besides a screen fast, Lembke and Alter recommended finding other, lessstringent ways to distance yourself from your phone each day. That might mean allotting times of the day or days of the week when you don’t use your phone at all, such as before and after work. It may also mean leaving your phone in the other room, keeping it out of your bedroom or putting everyone’s phone in a box outside of the kitchen during dinnertime.
Cut back on temptations
You can also make your phone less visually engaging, by changing the screen to grayscale or turning off notifications, for example. Alter suggested periodically rearranging the apps on your phone so that they become harder to find and less likely to lure you into a mindless loop of checking and rechecking simply out of habit. Both experts advised deleting certain types of apps — especially the ones you know that you have a hard time avoiding. If you don’t want to delete those apps, you can move them to the last screen on your phone to make them less accessible.
Most Americans do not get enough potassium or magnesium in through the food they eat, so this is another huge benefit of avocados be to substitute avocado for another fat a person is already eating. A good example would be substituting avocado for butter on toast,” Liz Weinandy, a registered dietitian at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, told Healthline. Avocados are considered heart-healthy because they are packed with dietary fibers, nutrients, and monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Monounsaturated fats help lower our LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels while maintaining our HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels. Potassium and magnesium support muscle function, including the heart muscle. “Most Americans do not get enough potassium or magnesium in through the food they eat, so this is another huge benefit of avocados,” says Weinandy. Avocados are also rich in phytonutrients, which are antiinflammatory. Avocados contain a lot of calories, so it’s worth being mindful of your portions, according to Weinandy. There are 234 calories in an avocado.

Indian fashion’s size-inclusivity conundrum
Life Positive
Are designers truly tapping into the opportunity in diversity by creating clothes for a segment that has been treated as second fiddle thus far? Or does discrimination based on size still run rampant? “If, as a brand, you are only just jumping onto this ‘body-positivity’ bandwagon, you’ve already missed the boat. Nor can you simply make a kaftan or one silhouette for the plus-size category when you’re not putting in the work to be truly size-inclusive. The acclaimed cricketer began his speech by addressing why needed to push himself. “Around 2008, I was in the middle of a lean patch. The runs had dried up and I was on the wrong side of 30. ‘Muslims oppressed in Hindu democracy’: al Qaeda chief al-Zawahiri slams hijab row, praises Muskan
A
yman al-Zawahiri, the head of al Qaeda, has released a new video message focussing on the Hijab controversy raging in Karnataka, which he claims has exposed “the reality of Hindu India and the deception of its pagan democracy”. The video, the first statement made by the world’s most-wanted jihadist since September, was posted to al Qaeda online groups late on Tuesday night. In the eight-minute statement, alZawahiri hails Muskan Khan — the Karnataka student who became famous for her pro-hijab protest in February — for having “challenged a mob of Hindu polytheists with defiant slogans of A screengrab of al Qaeda head, Ayman al-Zawahiri. The organisation was led by Asim Umer, an Uttar Pradesh-born, Deobandeducated seminarian, who had left for Pakistan in 1995. Umer is believed to have been killed in a United States military raid in Afghanistan’s Musa Qala in 2019. Bucha crises
What happened in Bucha, Ukraine, and was it ‘genocide’? More than 300 bodies have been found in a Kyiv suburb called Bucha, some with their hands bound, flesh burned, and shot in the back of the head. The discoveries have drawn comparisons with the killings of civilians in this area during World War II.
P
resident Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russian troops of committing “the most terrible war crimes” since World War II in an address to the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday as outrage and revulsion swept through Western capitals at what appeared to be incontrovertible evidence of grisly civilian massacres in Ukrainian areas vacated recently by Russian forces. After Russian troops withdrew from
Kyiv and the surrounding region last week, the scale of civilian casualties there is now being laid bare. Images from the commuter town of Bucha, just outside Kyiv, show dead bodies with their hands tied behind their backs - seemingly shot at close range. Satellite imagery has also revealed a makeshift mass grave outside a church in the town. Ukrainian President Volodymyr
Zelenskyy has described the evidence emerging from Bucha as “genocide” and says the UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday will discuss potential war crimes by Russian forces. Moscow has denied all such accusations and says the casualties in towns such as Bucha were the result of “blatant provocations by Ukrainian radicals”. The mayor of Bucha, Anatoly Fedoruk, claims more than 300 residents have been killed in the town.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and former heavyweight champion boxer Wladimir Klitschko have described civilian deaths in Bucha as “genocide of the Ukrainian people”. Ukrainian prosecutors have also said Russian forces used the basement of one house there as a torture chamber. Michelle Bachelet, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said she was “horrified” and that the images raise “serious and disturbing questions about possible war crimes, grave breaches of international humanitarian law and serious violations of international human rights law”.

C
ritics say the roots of the crisis, the worst in several decades, lie in economic mismanagement by successive governments that created and sustained a twin deficit – a budget shortfall alongside a current account deficit. “Sri Lanka is a classic twin deficits economy,” said a 2019 Asian Development Bank working paper. “Twin deficits signal that a country’s national expenditure exceeds its national income, and that its production of tradable goods and services is inadequate.” With the country’s lucrative tourism industry and foreign workers’ remittances sapped by the pandemic, credit ratings agencies moved to downgrade Sri Lanka and effectively locked it out of international capital markets. The Rajapaksa government’s decision to ban all chemical fertilisers in 2021, a move that was later reversed, also hit the country’s farm sector and triggered a drop in the critical rice crop.
Who is helping Sri Lanka?
For months, Rajapaksa’s administration and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) resisted calls by experts and opposition leaders to seek help from the IMF despite rising risks. But after oil prices soared in the wake of Russia’s

spokesman said on Thursday. Before heading to the IMF, Sri Lanka steeply devalued its currency, further stoking inflation and adding to the pain of the public, many of whom are enduring hardship and long queues.
The Rajapaksa government’s decision to ban all chemical fertilisers in 2021, a move that was later reversed, also hit the country’s farm sector and triggered a drop in the critical rice crop. In the interim, Rajapaksa has also sought help from China and India, particularly assistance on fuel from the latter. A diesel shipment under a $500 million credit line signed with India in February is expected to arrive on Saturday. Sri Lanka and India have signed a $1 billion credit line for importing essentials, including food and medicine, and the Rajapaksa government has sought at least another $1 billion from New Delhi. After providing the CBSL with a $1.5 billion swap and a $1.3 billion syndicated loan to the government, China is considering offering the island nation a $1.5 billion credit facility and a separate loan of up to $1 billion.

PM Imran says ‘establishment’ gave him three options

Prime Minister Imran Khan revealed on Friday that the “establishment” had given him three options: “resignation, no-confidence [vote] or elections”, following the filing of a no-confidence motion against him in the National Assembly.

The premier said when he was presented Earlier in the interview, the premier said with the three options, “We said elections there was a threat to his life, claiming is the best option, I cannot even think that those conspiring to topple his about resigning and as far as the no- government were “scared knowing confidence vote is concerned, I believe that even if he is ousted, the public will continue to support him”. in fighting till the end.” Pointing out that several members of “I am saying this openly that there is a Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf had defected threat to my life,” he said. to the opposition ahead of the no-trust “They, all those who have colluded vote, the premier explained that even [against me], know that I will not sit if the opposition’s no-trust move failed, silently,” the prime minister went on, “We cannot run the government with adding, “What do they think? They will spend Rs20 billion, Rs25 billion such people (defectors).” So, he said, “it will be better for Pakistan and topple my government and I will watch silently?” if we hold elections again.” “This is why I am saying openly, there is Asked whether he was prepared to go a threat to my life.” for early elections, he replied, “If we win The prime minister’s statement comes [in] this [no-confidence] vote, it is a very hours after Information Minister Fawad
Chaudhry said a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Imran Khan had been reported by security agencies. Earlier this week, PTI leader Faisal Vawda had made similar claims, stating that a conspiracy was being hatched to assassinate the prime minister over his refusal to “sell the country”. Vawda had made the remarks on ARY News show “Off the Record” in response to a question about a letter PM Imran brandished at the PTI’s March 27 power show in Islamabad, claiming it contained “evidence of a “foreign conspiracy” to topple his government. He said there was a threat to the prime minister’s life but remained evasive when asked whether the purported conspiracy to assassinate the premier was mentioned in the letter. When PM Imran Khan confirmed this in his interview, he said his life was under threat because he did not suit those involved in the conspiracy as well as “people like Shehbaz Sharif, who polishes boots” and “are slaves to money”.
The premier added that people like PML-N President Shehbaz had no public support. Without naming anyone, he continued, “They are afraid of people who have public support. They are talking about assassination because they know that if he (PM Imran) is ousted from the government, he will still be relevant because the public is with him.”
‘Knew about the conspiracy since Aug’ Earlier in the interview, the prime minister revealed that he was aware of the “conspiracy” being hatched to oust his government since August last year. “I had an idea since August and I also knew that planning was ongoing in London,” he said, adding that he had also informed his cabinet back then that the coming “winter would be a very difficult time for us”. “He (Nawaz Sharif) was meeting people, people like Hussain Haqqani [...] who was involved in memogate. They were in constant touch,” he alleged, claiming that Nawaz had held the last meeting in this regard on March 3. “And we received this document (a letter he claims has evidence of a foreign conspiracy to topple his government) on March 7.”
‘No differences on ISI chief’s appointment’
In response to a question about civilmilitary relations with respect to “an appointment in October” — which was an apparent reference to the appointment of a new Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) director general — the prime minister said, “We were all on one page. We had no differences” He said he had no issues with the military leadership unlike past leaders, who were “scared of the army because of their corruption”.
