Our San Diego

Families

Wishing you Joy and Peace this holiday season!

Thank you for being part of our family,

In the spirit of “supporting local” this holiday season, some of our staff share their favorite local artisans and businesses. Fabulous gift ideas! Sharon Bay, publisher For several years I have made quilts for kids aging out of foster homes and for little ones in need. When I need fabric, I go to Rosie’s Calico Cupboard on El Cajon Blvd. Their staff is very helpful when selecting the right fabric for making beautiful handmade quilts (and they carry every color under the rainbow!).

Giovanni Baldan, marketing representative Holidays are all about food! I recently discovered Prager Brothers Artisan Bread in Carlsbad, which is very good, offering delicious varieties of sourdough, and other breads and sweets. www.pragerbrothers.com Seaside Market in Cardiff is absolutely awesome for their tri-tip, marinated and infused with Burgundy pepper. It’s known as Cardiff Crack. www.seasidemarket.com

Lisa Gipson, managing editor I’m obsessed with the colorful stickers made by Katie Sabin of Just Add Sunshine (Escondido). See her high-quality stickers (which make fun stocking stuffers!) at www.etsy.com/ shop/JustAddSunshineInc. I also love the gorgeous necklaces made by Michelle Irvine of Coronado: www.facebook.com/MichelleIrvineArtist.

Adrienne Sigeti, editorial assistant I like to buy treats as gifts that normally can’t be found at the grocery store. I love supporting locally owned small businesses such as Chuao Chocolatier in Carlsbad. Chuao has a ton of delicious flavor combinations for every kind of chocolate lover. Order holiday gift packs at www.chuaochocolatier.com.

Rik Thiesfeld, art director Taylor Guitars are high quality instruments made in El Cajon. They make a great gift for a first-time guitarist or an advanced player. I suggest buying one of each model—you can never have too many guitars! www.taylorguitars.com

Anne Malinoski, contributing writer If you’re looking for dreamy gifts from local artisans you absolutely can’t go wrong with Sugar Mamma’s small batch caramels (www.sugarmammacaramels.com/shop) or CeeCee & Bee’s Pacific Ocean Body Scrub (www.etsy.com/listing/171140936/pacificocean-body-scrub-sea-salt).

Ask Ms. Lydia We will have extended family at our house during the holidays. My family is affectionate and freely gives hugs and kisses when we get together. I have always told my kids (boy, age 5 and girl, age 3), “Give Grandma and Grandpa a kiss” because that’s what I was taught. But lately I’ve been thinking about something a friend said: She’s teaching her kids that people (even family) need to ask permission. Should I force my kids to show affection to grandparents (and other relatives) or should they ask my kids’ permission? — Joanne in Escondido

Hi Joanne, This is a great question. I’m sure you’re not alone, thinking about this uncomfortable topic. This year of social distancing and elbow bumps might make it easier, but it’s still an important topic of discussion. First and foremost, children (even young ones) need to learn that they are the boss of their own bodies. Talk to your children first; how would they like to greet their grandparents? What feels comfortable—a hug, a kiss, a high five? Learning that they have a choice about what happens with their bodies at a young age gives kids the skills to stand up for themselves later in life. As parents, it’s our job to teach children they can make decisions about what feels comfortable. “The rule of thumb is to never force or guilt a child into expressing physical affection if they are uncomfortable doing so,” says Pattie Fitzgerald, child safety advocate, children’s author and founder of Safely Ever After. “We want to teach kids that they have permission to listen to their instincts or their ‘uhoh’ feelings when it comes to physical affection.”

If your child says he prefers giving relatives a high five, Fitzgerald advises pre-planning so parents can avoid an awkward conversation in front of the child. Before they come over, say something like, “Bobby has been practicing being the boss of his own body and touches, so if he doesn’t want to hug you tomorrow, it’s not personal, he’s just practicing. Please be supportive and go along with it.” Phrasing it this way communicates that they can help Bobby “practice” by supporting his high-five greeting. Explain that teaching Bobby these skills helps him have confidence to stand up for himself with others, should the need arise. This may help ward off any hurt feelings— and it may not. Either way, support your child’s decision. Some relatives may push the issue, so it’s important to advocate for your child. Have some scripted answers ready so you can respond appropriately and your child sees you’re supporting him and honoring his wishes. Put on a big smile and say, “We allow Bobby to make decisions about his own hugs and kisses. I am sure you understand.” I hope this is helpful, Joanne. If you want to learn more about teaching children to be the boss of their own bodies, visit www.SafelyEverAfter.com. All the best—and happy holidays! Ms. Lydia v Lydia Smith has a degree in Developmental Psychology and was a preschool director/owner/teacher for 25 years. She is a mom of two adult sons. Do you have a question for Ms. Lydia about your child who is between the ages of 2–6? Email it to editor@ sandiegofamily.com for possible inclusion in the next issue of Family Magazine. Please put “Ask Ms. Lydia” in the subject line and be sure to include your name, ages of children and area of San Diego you live.

We asked local parents to share their tips and tricks for making the holiday season “brighter” (easier, more fun, meaningful, festive, organized, etc.). A big thank you to moms in Poway, San Marcos and Rancho Peñasquitos for all the responses we received on Facebook! Here are holiday hacks to make the season brighter.

HOLIDAY HACKS to Make the Season Brighter Gift Giving

Request gifts that won’t clutter the house, such as zoo memberships, meal prep services or magazine subscriptions. Ask family members to submit their favorite recipes and make a cookbook. Consider adding family photos and stories. It will be a treasured gift for years to come. Keep a spreadsheet of gifts: where purchased, how it’s wrapped (in case a label falls off), and which gathering it goes to (when there are multiple celebrations to attend). The spreadsheet can also be used to remember what you’ve given people in previous years. To avoid going overboard with gifts for the kids, buy them something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read. Use www.pirateship.com to print labels from home for free and save on shipping costs through USPS. Make mason jar cookie kits as gifts for neighbors and friends. Layer all dry ingredients in the jars; recipients only need to add eggs and butter, and bake. Don’t forget to include the recipe! Anne Barrera made large themed felt envelopes with Santa’s mailing address on them; her kids write what they want for Christmas, put it inside, and an elf picks them up to deliver to Santa. On Christmas Day some gifts are specially labeled, “certified” from The North Pole.

Wrapping and Decorating

Buy wrapping paper, gift bags, ornaments, etc. after Christmas (for the following year), so you don’t have to pay full price. Use fishing wire to string up Christmas cards on the mantle—it looks so festive! Use cup hooks to hang outdoor Christmas lights—little white ones that blend in if you have white wooden eaves on the front of your house. Leave the hooks up all year so lights are a cinch to hang each year. Use cloth bags and flannel pillowcases tied with ribbons to wrap presents for kids. The cloth bags are reusable and make wrapping so fast (and quiet). I take the Monday after Thanksgiving off work every year and decorate EVERYTHING. My kids come home to Christmas awesomeness and we enjoy hot cocoa in special cups. I really get into Christmas! — Emma Romberger

14 • SanDiegofamily.com • December 2020

Celebrate / Fun Stuff Growing up without much, I wanted to find a way to share the holiday spirit with my children that had nothing to do with tangible gifts, but sharing a sentiment that money couldn’t buy. This was the beginning of our Christmas letter tradition. Each family member writes a letter to the others. Everyone can participate no matter the writing level (preschoolers draw pictures). Before Christmas Eve, the letters are rolled up, tied with ribbon and placed in the tree. We take a quiet moment on Christmas Day to read them (sharing is optional). The letters have become treasures over the years. — Susan May

Looking for a place to drop off your child’s letter to Santa? Swing by the amazing Candy Land house at the corner of Mt. Albertine and Mt. Aguilar in Clairemont, where there’s a dedicated mailbox. Go to www.sandiegofamily.com/things-to-do/seasonal-happenings to print out a free Santa letter template that kids can color, fill out and drop off. Get 25 books from the library, wrap each one and put them under the Christmas tree. Each day in December kids get to unwrap one to read together. Hours of enjoyment for only the cost of wrapping paper! Every year Santa brought my children a new Christmas book, so now we have a great collection. Santa always wrote a note inside the book and signed it. Take the kids driving around different neighborhoods to look at lights, complete with fun snacks and warm drinks. Use Family Magazine’s Map of Christmas Lights to navigate your way around the county! www.sandiegofamily.com/things-to-do/san-diego-sbest-map-of-christmas-lights

I made an advent calendar that I fill each year, alternating days between kids. They love waking up to get their present (even though they’re now teens). I try to limit myself to $2 per pocket, but will spend more if I find something I really like. Some of the items I’ve given are a Pokémon Pez dispenser, eye pillows, a pack of their favorite gum and hair ties. I also give each of them a meaningful ornament with their name and the year. Last year we lived in South Africa, so one ornament had a lion on it and the other a rhino. Hopefully the kids will use these keepsakes to decorate their trees in years to come. — Kristy deLange

Put the Christmas tree inside a Pack ‘n Play if you have little ones! It keeps the presents contained and curious hands off the tree. Here’s a photo of ours last year. — Jaclynn Whitehead

Make an advent calendar featuring silly or fun activities instead of treats: sing a Christmas carol, have a dance party in the kitchen, call a relative just to say “I love you”, etc. Sprinkling in a few surprise quarters or dollar bills is fun, too. — Jennifer Mulloy Learn how to make an advent calendar at www.sandiegofamily.com/for-the-kids/crafts-for-kids (pictured on the left).

We have embraced decorating store-bought cookies for Santa in hectic years. I’m grateful to the person who said years ago that Santa doesn’t want a ton of goodies because he and his reindeer eat at every house. — Janice Lew Santos

Christmas Eve Traditions

We let the kids open a box of fun snacks and something to do together as a family on Christmas Eve (a movie, a puzzle, etc.). Make a fabric “Santa bag” for each child to set by the tree for Santa to put gifts in after they go to sleep. It only takes a yard of festive fabric and a cord for a drawstring—so easy to sew! Bonus: No need to wrap Santa gifts and less wrapping paper in the landfill. After candlelight service on Christmas Eve, the kids are allowed to open one gift each, which is always new pajamas, so we can take adorable pictures the next morning.

Check out all the things busy mom and local teacher Alyssa Navapanich does to save time: • Accesses the family’s shared gift list in Google drive, which has everyone’s wish lists, sizes, favorite colors, interests, etc.

Make cinnamon rolls the night before to bake in the morning or make an egg casserole in the crockpot. Prep goes a long way to help have a stress-free morning.

Brittney Vier preps blueberry French toast casserole the night before, so on Christmas morning she just sticks it in the oven. “The house smells amazing and there is no cooking to be done. It’s so yummy!” Here’s the recipe, but she substitutes Challah bread and uses fresh blueberries. www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/ baked_blueberry_french_toast_ casserole

More Hacks

• Packs all stocking items in labeled bags to drop into stockings on Christmas Eve.

Making simple recipes helps when making cookie plates to give away, so you don’t have to bake all day. I love these four-ingredient vegan peanut butter cookies (make them festive with a chocolate star on top): www.cassclaycooking.com/4ingredient-vegan-peanut.../ — Cassie Bains

• Makes side dishes for dinner a few days ahead to simply put into the oven the day of. • Keeps an address list for cards (already formatted for labels) that she updates as needed throughout the year. • Maintains a shared recipe book in Google drive with all the family recipes, including (most importantly) the Christmas cookies.

6 Reasons to Support San Diego this Holiday Season San Diego’s local businesses are the pride of our community. Now more than ever, they need our support, so make it a goal to buy local as you shop for gifts. Here are six reasons to remember your favorite local companies this holiday season.

1

Many gifts won’t be given in person, so it’s doubly important they feel personal. Celebrations have looked different this year and the holidays are no exception. Once again, my family has scrapped traditions that simply won’t work in a pandemic. Namely, overburdening my mother’s sofas with far too many bodies

while passing an endless procession of cookies, presents and cocoa—all while laughing heartily enough to fall into each other. Since we’ll be trading our large, close-knit gatherings for small, virtual ones, I’m counting on meaningful, local gifts to make this tradition feel special.

type that are relatively safe right now. Embrace the power of these small connections! During a recent shopping trip, my son met a friendly retail associate who helped him find justthe-right-thing. She complimented his favorite shirt and listened to his stories. He smiled the whole way home.

Business Relief Fund has managed to assist an impressive 2,000 San Diego businesses during the pandemic, an additional 8,000 have applied for grants that may never come. Spending locally has never been more important. Small businesses are often the first to give back to the communities they serve, sponsoring youth sports and donating to school fundraisers. Let’s not forget them in their time of need. Don’t forget local restaurants! Support restaurant owners by purchasing gift certificates as gifts or having a meal delivered to friends and loved ones in the month of December.

4

It’s easier than ever to buy local.

5

Local gifts have local character.

6

It’s better for the environment.

The pandemic has motivated local businesses to adapt. Many have embraced faster, safer and more convenient shopping options to meet the needs of busy customers. You might be surprised to find your favorite shop now offers online ordering with local delivery or curbside pickup. Take a look!

The products and services available in our beloved neighborhoods are often an expression of who we are as a community. A local gift can be a symbol of solidarity when given to someone who lives nearby. When gifted to someone far away, these items serve as a lovely reminder of the memories they’ve made here in the past.

When we buy products close to home, they don’t require as much packaging as items shipped from far away. In addition, local purchases require less fuel and fewer transportation emissions to reach our homes. Shopping local is good for our communities and good for the earth! v Anne Malinoski is an award-winning writer who lives in Santee with her husband and two boys.

Cranberry Christmas Cake

We can’t make any

promises for a white Christmas in San Diego, but we CAN share the recipe for this gorgeous white Christmas cake by local food blogger, Jackie Bruchez. Find the full recipe at www.theseasidebaker.com/ cranberry-christmas-cake. Make frosted cranberries to decorate the cake or any other special holiday treats and drinks.

Frosted Cranberries 1 cup water 1 cup sugar 1 cup fresh cranberries 1/3 cup sugar (for coating) Combine water and one cup sugar in a small pan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, stirring until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and cool for 10 minutes. Place cranberries in a large bowl and pour syrup over the top. Stir gently to coat. Let cool completely. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight. Once cranberries have steeped and are cold, drain in a colander. Place 1/3 cup sugar in a shallow dish. Add cranberries in small batches, rolling to coat with sugar. Spread sugared cranberries in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Let them sit at room temperature until dry, about 1 hour. Store cranberries in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to one week.
