What Can Parent Do To Help Kids Read More
The National Education Association (NEA) recommends parents do the following to create a sense of enjoyment for reading in their kids. Read NEA’s full list of tips at www.nea.org/ professional-excellence/studentengagement/tools-tips/raisingreaders-what-parents-can-do.
1. Read together every day.
2. Talk to build vocabulary.
3. Model reading.
4. Point out print (signs, recipes, cereal boxes, instruction manuals, maps, menus, etc.).
5. Create a reading-rich home.
6. Keep books handy to read aloud when you have to wait at restaurants or appointments.
7. Let kids choose books.
8. Be an active reader. Use expressive voices, make sound effects, and point things out when reading aloud.
9. Discuss what you read.
10. Make reading an experience. Link life experiences with books, like a trip to the zoo and books about animals; or planting a garden and reading The Ugly Vegetables by Grace Lin.
11. Have fun!
