Mom-Owned Businesses, Halloween and Pumpkins
October is National Women’s Small Business Month, so we’re spotlighting four inspiring moms who have built successful careers. Their stories and insights on starting and running a business can be found starting on page 18. From art to active play to yummy foods, these entrepreneurs deserve your support. If you’re considering starting a business of your own, visit www.sandiegofamily.com and search for “moms in business” to discover how other local mothers balance family life with entrepreneurship.
I have been fortunate to own San Diego Family since it was three years old in 1985. While I didn’t experience the challenges of launching a new publication, I have enjoyed nurturing it through its toddler/teen/adult years. The journey has been incredibly rewarding, from manually pasting up the magazine in its early days to relying on technology for the layout today. I am grateful for my talented staff, who consistently work their magic to publish the magazine each month. I take pride in their ability to meet every deadline.
As fall arrives, so do pumpkin patches and Halloween festivities. Check out “Our San Diego Families” on this page for adorable photos of a few readers and their families. Our calendar is filled with both spooky and non-spooky events, perfect for celebrating the season. Be sure to visit www.sandiegofamily.com and search “pumpkins” to find fun decorations, recipes, pumpkin-themed ideas and activities.
With the school year rolling along and kids getting involved in afterschool activities, try to keep the stress level down with a good routine. Read page 16 for help. Visit www.sandiegofamily.com/ resources/afterschool-activities for afterschool activity ideas.
Soccer is a popular sport in San Diego County with many club and recreational opportunities for kids. We want to congratulate Alex Morgan for her successful career with the National Women’s Soccer League (including San Diego Wave FC). Her foundation supports local girls and women in sports. She has one little girl and is expecting. Happy Halloween! Keep safe and have fun.

Our San Diego Families
Thank you to everyone who responded to our request for photos in local Facebook Moms Groups and answered a “Would you rather…?” question. Here’s what they had to say.
Would you rather take a spooky hayride or walk through a corn maze?
This is the Litton Family of Rancho Peñasquitos: Pete, Chrissy, Chase (13) and Taylor (10). Taylor says, “I would rather walk through a corn maze because corn mazes are fun!”
The Patel Family of Rancho Peñasquitos takes dressing up for Halloween very seriously! Here are parents Duran and Kiran with kids Dylan (13) and Maya (9), decked out in Star Wars costumes. They had the photos taken at Glamis Sand Dunes (2.5 hours east of San Diego) with Chris from All Colors Photography.
In response to our “would you rather” question, Maya says, “I would rather take a spooky hayride than walk through a corn maze because I love the thrill of getting scared, especially at Halloween time!”
Short & Sweet
It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month
As a breast cancer survivor who was diagnosed at age 31 (no family history), I like to remind women in October to schedule a mammogram. It doesn’t matter when you do it—what’s important is to schedule a mammogram annually and to know your own body so you notice when something isn’t right.
Breast cancer is largely treatable, especially when detected early. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, three steps to early detection include breast self-awareness, well-visits and mammograms. Learn more at www.nationalbreastcancer.org and reach out to your doctor with questions.
If you don’t have access to mammograms, visit www.fhcsd.org/every-woman-counts to see if you qualify for free services through Family Health Center of San Diego’s Every Woman Counts program.
Know someone navigating a cancer diagnosis? Read our article “13 Ways to Comfort a Friend with Cancer” for a list of ideas on how to help and support your loved one. www.sandiegofamily.com/resources/ family-health-and-home/13-ways-to-comfort-a-friend-with-cancer
Feeling Overwhelmed?
Even a short stress-buster can do wonders for your mental health and well-being when you’re feeling overwhelmed. Try a five-minute yoga pose, do 10 jumping jacks, turn on relaxing music or take a 20-minute walk. Get more oneminute, 15-minute or one-hour stress busters at www.up2sd.org/ topics/mental-health.

Kids who appreciate playful frights and a touch of spookiness (and parents who are longtime NSYNC fans) will get a kick out of Trick or Treat on Scary Street, written by Lance Bass (illustrated by Roland Garrigue). That’s right— the musical superstar has penned his first children’s book in honor of his favorite holiday: Halloween!
An Ode to James Earl Jones I was holding a copy of Ode to Grapefruit: How James Earl Jones Found His Voice, trying to figure out the best time to share it with our readers, when the news broke last month that James Earl Jones passed away. I had my answer—the time was now. What family or classroom full of kids wouldn’t be fascinated by the childhood of the man whose iconic voice is recognized worldwide as Darth Vader and Lion King’s Mufasa (among others)? As if I needed another reason to love and appreciate this legendary actor, the story reveals Jones’ challenges at school as a child who stuttered. He kept silent for eight years, until poetry (and a supportive teacher) helped him find his voice. It’s a wonderful book, written by Kari Lavelle; illustrated by Bryan Collier.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month Read
National Hispanic Heritage Month continues this month (annually celebrated from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15) to recognize the contributions and influence of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the history, culture and achievements of the United States. There is a plethora of ways to dive into Hispanic culture in San Diego, including visiting local museums, neighborhoods and historical sites, reading books with kids, getting creative with art projects and, of course, eating traditional foods. Here are ideas to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

How to Create a Stress-Free Afterschool Routine
We all want to help our children succeed, but do you ever wonder if you’re doing too much or too little? Are we guiding or pressuring? Encouraging or interfering? In an effort to avoid causing stress and anxiety, it’s important to create a positive, balanced environment at home so kids know they are supported, but have some independence. If you want to help kids do well in school, here are tips to create stress-free afternoons at home.
Establish a Routine
The familiarity of routine provides kids with a sense of security and comfort. When they come home from school, ease into the transition from school life to home life. Ask kids about their day and provide a healthy snack and opportunity to wind down. Consider enriching activities like an art or dance class, mindfulness activities or outdoor play before jumping into homework assignments.
Have a Set Time for Homework
Homework can be difficult at the best of times, especially when kids would prefer to play or relax. Having a set time for homework makes it easier to formulate a habit. Be consistent, with the understanding that sometimes
life happens and the family has to deviate from the set plan. Be available to help, if needed. Sometimes kids get overwhelmed and anxious about getting answers wrong, when it’s more important to show the teacher that an attempt was made to figure it out.
Do your kids need help with homework? See our list of helpful apps and local tutoring services at www.sandiegofamily.com/resources/ education-directory/homework-helpapps-and-san-diego-tutoring-services.
Provide Access to Resources
Providing kids with the right resources encourages them to learn at home. There is an abundance of educational
tools online that can help them brush up on skills and view concepts they learn at school in an interesting way. Visit your neighborhood library to find books about subjects they are learning in school. Consider visiting a local science or art museum on the weekend to enrich their educational experiences and understanding.
Wondering which family field trips support topics kids learn in school? First, know what they’re learning about; then read our article “Fun San Diego Learning Adventures” at www.sandiegofamily.com/thingsto-do/out-about/fun-educationalplaces-to-go-with-kids.
Check Your Attitude
As difficult as it may be sometimes, it is important to have a positive, non-pushy attitude towards your children’s learning experiences. You want to inspire and encourage; not pressure and nag. Nagging takes the fun out of it, and induces stress and anxiety. Use positive language about school, even when kids are struggling with a challenging subject or situation.
Ensure Kids Get Plenty of Sleep
Sleep has a significant impact on how well kids do in school. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, kids ages 3–12 need about 10–12 hours of sleep each night.
Make sure they go to bed at a consistent time and have a comfortable sleep environment. That means shutting down electronics well before bedtime, making sure the bedroom is cool enough, and letting them sleep with their favorite stuffed animal or cozy blanket.
Want to know more about proper sleep for children? Read this article by Children’s Primary Care Medical Group: www.cpcmg.net/thebenefits-of-better-sleep-for-kids.
Never Compare
Don’t compare your kids to other children, especially siblings. Everyone develops at different rates. Comparison often has a detrimental effect on self-esteem, so be sure to focus on one child’s needs, characteristics and strengths at a time. v

Women Who Lead
Discover four companies founded by local moms
Do you ever dream about running your own business? If you’re managing a busy household, you may already have what it takes. Moms often develop strong leadership, problem-solving, strategic planning, organizational, financial management and communication skills—all important components of successful entrepreneurship. October is National Women’s Small Business Month, so it’s the perfect time to consider turning your budding business vision into reality. Need some practical advice and inspiration? Meet four local “mompreneurs” who spill the tea on getting started, managing challenges and reaching a healthy worklife balance.
Carol Pankiw | OOLY
OOLY’s innovative line of fun, high-quality arts and crafts supplies is the brainchild of Carol Pankiw, a North County mother of two with an extensive background in marketing and product development. From the get-go, she understood that kids (and parents) love color, sparkle and whimsy. (Who wouldn’t want a set of Yummy Yummy Scented Glitter Gel Pens, right?)
“My travels and experiences in the industry exposed me to a wide range of creative products, but I kept seeing a recurring gap in the market—there weren’t many options that truly combined creativity with usability in arts and crafts,” says Pankiw. “I wanted to fill this void by offering products that not only sparked imagination but were also practical and accessible for everyday use. This vision became the driving force behind launching OOLY.”
Pankiw confesses that being a mother and successful business owner has offered both highlights and challenges. While she appreciates the work-life flexibility to be present at important family moments, she is continuously juggling both roles, sometimes working late nights and dealing with business interruptions at inopportune times. Nonetheless, Pankiw’s perseverance has led to a thriving household brand, with OOLY products available online and in retailers nationwide.
“I’m incredibly proud of OOLY’s success. It’s been a result of a lot of hard work, dedication and a clear vision from the start,” says Pankiw. “Seeing our products make a positive impact and connect with people in such meaningful ways is truly rewarding. It reinforces the belief that when you pour your heart into something, it can really pay off.” Explore an extensive line of awesome products at www.OOLY.com.
Carol Pankiw’s advice to future business owners: Build a strong support system and create a flexible schedule that balances work and family. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and stay passionate about your vision. It’s a challenging but rewarding journey, and the key is to stay persistent and adaptable.
Kim Skulavik | Toucan Play
Toucan Play in Chula Vista is a safe, engaging indoor play space designed specifically for toddlers. It involves well-thought out sensory play experiences including a ball pit, play house, magnetic wall, kitchen and baby doll area. As parents bond with kids through play, there is also an opportunity to socialize with other parents. Also available is up to four hours of drop-in childcare on Saturdays!
This wonderful dual-concept is thanks to Kim Skulavik, a South Bay mother of two (ages 3 and 6) with a broadcasting and marketing background. Her business plan took root during COVID, when many moms desperately sought sitters or play spaces for babies and toddlers. Skulavik recognized the need for a safe space firsthand. “My child has gotten pushed,
shoved, bumped into, stuff taken away and jumped on by older kids,” she says.
Skulavik also knows that finding a sitter can be challenging, “Do I just post online and say ‘Hey, I need someone to watch my kid,’ and let a stranger who replies to my post watch her? It’s hard.”
Since opening, business highlights for Skulavik involve hearing feedback from other parents on how Toucan Play has really helped them out. She also appreciates that her own kids can come to work with her when necessary. As for challenges, Skulavik shares that running a business can involve a lot of time and money.
“Aside from indoor play, we are building up event offerings. This includes mommy and me classes, parent workshops (while the kids play, so no sitter needed), fun classes for parents (like paint and sip), parents night out, drop-in care...and of course, parties for little ones,” says Skulavik. Find the schedule and latest offerings at www.toucan-play.com.
Kim Skulavik’s advice to future business owners: Research, research, research. Talk to others who are doing the same thing, or visit places that have similar items and see why they are successful. Pick a market that isn’t saturated with similar businesses.
Chan Buie | Hey Sugar!
Discover unique southern cake jars, peach cobbler and more deliciousness at Hey Sugar’s storefront in Old Town (also available in East Village downtown).
“I’ve been baking since I was a little girl,” says owner Chan Buie. “My family was really big on gathering around food. I learned to cook from my mom, dad, aunties and uncles. Buie’s entrepreneurial journey began in high school, when she sold her homemade food and desserts to other students.
“After high school, I enlisted in the Navy,” Buie says. “My job wasn’t to cook, but I always managed to find myself in a kitchen or galley cooking food. My meals and desserts became so popular that my coworkers, family and friends encouraged me to start selling them.”
After retiring from the Navy, Buie’s talents led to the opening of Hey Sugar! While she admits to working long
hours, she is incredibly grateful to be an entrepreneurial role model to her four boys—all of whom plan to own their own businesses one day.
Buie plans to expand her offerings with a flagship location called Hey Sugar Southern Style Dessert Boutique, more of a grandma’s kitchen ambiance than a store. She also hopes to open bakery kiosks throughout San Diego County.
Delivery and catering options are available. Cake jars can be returned for a discount off your next purchase. Discover what’s available at www.heysugarsweets.com.
Chan Buie’s advice to future business owners: Do it! You won’t know how successful your business can be if you don’t start it. It’s a wild ride, but so worth it.
Kendra Matthews Hidden Foods Co.
“As a mom of two boys, the goal was to create a healthy alternative to the quick meal, but also something delicious kids and adults could enjoy,” says Kendra Matthews, founder of Encinitas-based Hidden Foods Co. “I started with a family marinara sauce recipe, adding in vegetables like pureed carrots, beets, spinach, zucchini and more. From there, Hidden Foods was born!”
Along with its signature pasta sauce, Hidden Foods offers four pancake mixes (including one gluten-free) and naturally sweetened cookies in convenient snack packs. All products have hidden vegetables, all-natural ingredients and no added sugar.
“Maybe it’s my Italian or Southern U.S. heritage, but food makes me happy and brings people together,” says Matthews. “In our home, we do a lot of cooking together, whether that’s homemade pizza or pasta or cakes and cookies.” She wants to pass that passion on to her kids. “I am determined to educate my kids on different flavors and foods, but also teach the importance of what that food does for us.”
Matthews’ kids are a big part of her business, testing new recipes and telling her what they think. “Sometimes they’ll have a bite and say, ‘it’s not your best, mom,’ but other times they grab the whole bag— that’s when I know the recipe works.” Discover where to purchase products locally at www.hiddenfoodsco.com.
Kendra Matthews’ advice to future business owners: If you have a passion for something, just do it. You don’t have to know how to be a bookkeeper or the best marketer. You don’t have to do it nationally or for millions of dollars— just start. v
