SAN DIEGO GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL presents
The 2015 San Diego Green Building Conference & Expo
The Value of Sustainability September 22, 2015
ABOUT SDGBC The San Diego Green Building Council is a local 501c3 community benefit non-profit organization, driven by a vision of the future where our buildings and communities will regenerate and sustain the health and vitality of all life within a generation. The San Diego Green Building Council is the official chapter of the US Green Building Council in San Diego and host to the San Diego Living Building Challenge Collaborative. Our programs and partnerships are designed to support our mission: to inspire, educate and collaborate within our community to transform our built environment toward true sustainability. Check out our Events Calendar to see all of our upcoming events online at www.usgbc-sd.org/Calendar. Some of our key programs and events include:
GREEN ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The Green Assistance Program is a hands-on learning opportunity for anyone who is looking to advance their knowledge of green buildings, the LEED certification rating system, and regulations driving sustainability in the built environment. Since 2010, over 100 volunteers contributed to the LEED certification of local non-profit facilities such as the Old Globe Theatre, the Air and Space Museum, and the World Beat Center, under the Existing Buildings Operations + Maintenance rating system. In 2015, our volunteers will have a chance to work on the LEED certifications of the Museum of Man, the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank, and the Jacob’s Center for Neighborhood Innovation. Applications for the Jacobs Center will be accepted until October 7th; GAP for the Food Bank will kick-off shortly thereafter.
MONTHLY EDUCATIONAL EVENTS
The Monthly Educational Events are one of two event types: Lunch+LEEDs and Green Meets / Green Salons. These fun and casual gatherings bring educational content from local experts, include tours of San Diego’s greenest projects, and provide updates from policy-makers to our member community and the general public. Our next Green Salon event will be at the Copley-Price Family YMCA, on Wednesday, October 21st.

ABOUT SDGBC GREEN HOMES TOUR
The Green Homes Tour is a self-guided tour of San Diego’s greenest residential developments, where homeowners open up their homes and invite our community to see what some of these sustainability strategies look like. This tour takes place annually in the fall. Don’t miss the 2015 event on Sunday, October 4th!
GREEN SCHOOLS CHALLENGE
The Green Schools Challenge is a friendly competition where schools develop a sustainable or “green” project to be completed during the school year and document results for a chance to be recognized nationally. SDGBC’s work with local schools also includes the annual Green Apple Day of Service and Healthy Schools Initiative. This year’s Green Apple Day of Service will take place at two local schools, KIPP Adelante and Pacific Trails, on Saturday, September 26th.
LIVING BUILDING CHALLENGE COLLABORATIVE
The Living Building Challenge Collaborative is a community-based, in-person group of Living Building Challenge advocates and ambassadors, which provides an opportunity for informal learning experiences and advances in our community transformation. Collaborative members are investigating and advocating for the local conditions that allow for Living Buildings, Sites, and Communities. Look out for our 2014 Feasibility Study, as well as a summary report from our PreConference LBC Symposium that was held on September 21st.
We thank you for your commitment to a sustainable San Diego and for joining us at this year’s Green Building Conference and Expo!

OPENING SESSION CONFERENCE KICK-OFF:
The Value and Values of Good Governance Douglas Kot, AIA, LEED Faculty
The recent trend in green building has been to expand the argument from the value to the values of sustainability, which include concepts like: well-being, resilient communities, equitable resource use, health, community development, and environmental and social justice. This session will help the audience understand how the evolving language helps to expand opportunities for green building. Another driver of green building—and marker of our values—is legislation; major changes are proposed at the federal, state and local levels. This session will introduce a new perspective on the value and values of sustainability through the lens of this proposed regulation. Taken together, the market conditions and the regulatory approach will have a profound effect—this session will present a hopeful path forward for green building and sustainable communities in our region. Douglas Kot, AIA, LEED Faculty is Head of Section for the Sustainable Buildings and Communities Team at DNV GL (formerly DNV KEMA). Doug has been involved with green building and sustainable planning since 1997 as a planner, architect, and building scientist. His experience includes all phases and scales of project development including the technical development of dozens of high-performance and zero net energy buildings where he has advised on energy systems, water efficiency and reuse, material impacts and healthy interiors. He has taught extensively on building energy use and sustainable building technologies at UCSD Extension, Design Institute of San Diego, Pitzer College, the Boston Architectural College and UC Berkeley. He is U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED Faculty for—and is a LEED Accredited Professional with specialty in—Neighborhood Development, Buildings Design & Construction, Existing Buildings Operations & Maintenance and LEED for Homes. Doug is the current board chair for the San Diego Green Building Council and is Vice-chair of the USGBC California advocacy efforts. He is a member of the City of San Diego Sustainable Energy Advisory Board and is the current chair of the Environmental and Economic Sustainability Task Force that supported the development of the City of San Diego’s Climate Action Plan. Doug holds dual Masters’ Degrees from UC Berkeley in City Planning and Landscape Architecture and a Bachelor of Architecture Degree from the Pennsylvania State University. He has been a registered architect since 2001.

While serving as a special strategic assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2009-2011, US Marine Corps Col. Now as the Co-Director of the Strategic Innovation Lab at Case Western Reserve University, Mykleby, along with his counterpart Patrick Doherty, has developed the implementation framework for the strategy called for in the “Narrative.” This new grand strategy calls for private sector leadership to shift our national trajectory in a more positive direction by leveraging market demand for smartgrowth housing, regenerative agriculture, and a productivity revolution in materials, manufacturing, and energy. Mykleby will discuss the national imperative behind this new national strategy and the role the private sector must play to direct America toward a more prosperous and secure future. Mark was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps following his graduation from the United States Naval Academy in 1987. In 2007, Mark was assigned to the US Special Operations Command where he developed strategy for Special Operations Forces. From 2009 until 2011, he served as a special strategic assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In that capacity, he co-authored with Navy Captain Wayne Porter A National Strategic Narrative, a concept and vision for a 21st Century grand strategy for the nation. Mark retired from the Marine Corps in August 2011 and subsequently joined New America Foundation, serving as a senior fellow from 2011 to 2014. Now as the Co-Director of the Strategic Innovation Lab at Case Western Reserve University, Mark continues his work on grand strategy and sustainability. Mark graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with distinction in 1987. He earned a Masters of Military Studies from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College in 1999.
