SUMMARY OF POVERTY THROUGHOUT THE REGION’S CITIES

OVERVIEW

San Diego County ranks 13th in poverty rate among major U.S. metros. Slightly below the national (14.7 percent) and the state rate (15.3 percent), 13.8 percent of San Diego’s total population live below the federal poverty threshold. When compared to nearby metros, San Diego fares better than Riverside, which, at 17.5 percent, has the largest percentage of its population below the poverty line among major metros. Neighboring Los Angeles, at 15.7 percent, is almost two percentage points higher than San Diego.

Poverty thresholds vary by family size and change from year to year. Below are the 2014 composition weighted average thresholds for families with up to 5 members. Any individual or family with a household income below their respective threshold is characterized as living in poverty.

Although the region’s poverty rate is lower than its neighboring metros and the nation, eight out of the region’s 18 cities have a poverty rate higher than the national rate, 14.7 percent. The percentage of the population living below the poverty threshold ranges from four percent in Del Mar to 26 percent in El Cajon. Educational attainment by population ranges from 72 percent in Del Mar to 12 percent in National City.
