From humble beginnings in north London to debonair TV personality, the life and works of Michael portillo make for one interesting history lesson

ichael started his political career in 1976, joining the Conservative research department where he was responsible for briefing Margaret Thatcher before her press conferences. Becoming an MP in 1984 after winning the by-election in Enfield Southgate, Michael went on to represent the seat for the next 13 years and joined the government in 1986, serving in different ministerial roles including five years in John Major’s cabinet. He ended his run as an MP as secretary of state for defence in 1997. Having turned his attention to journalism for two years, Michael returned to politics in 1999, winning a by-election in Kensington and Chelsea and acting as shadow chancellor of the exchequer until 2001. Michael left the House of Commons after narrowly missing out on the Conservative leadership in 2005. Outside of his parliamentary appointments, Michael has garnered a reputation as a sound and seasoned broadcaster, producing a number of factual programmes for the BBC including Portillo in Euroland, Elizabeth I, When Michael Portillo became a single mum and Portillo Goes Wild in Spain. However, he is perhaps best known as the face of BBC2’s Great British Railway Journeys and Great Continental Railway Journeys, of which he made 100 episodes. Michael is currently a commentator on BBC 1’s late-night political chat show This Week.

Our very own slice of razor royalty, Will certainly knows about growing a thriving business during uncertain times

F

ormed during the recession of the early 1990s, Will’s enterprise King of Shaves has been reinventing the shaving market one product at a time. Designed to tackle his pet peeve of razor burn, the company’s shaving oil hit the shelves first in Harrods in September 1993 before being picked up by Boots in May 1994. Since then, Will has been building the King of Shaves brand from a humble outfit running from his kitchen to a multinational enterprise operating in the US, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Africa and Brazil. Adding to its initial offering, King of Shaves now has over thirty products in Britain’s biggest retailers, including Asda, Boots, Lloyds Pharmacy, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Superdrug, Tesco and Waitrose. And never one to rest on his laurels, Will’s spent the last few decades disrupting the stagnant shaving market, bringing countless new innovations to consumers. From the King of Shaves Sub that offers razor cartridges delivered to your door for a monthly subscription to its Prostyle Multi Styler, the entrepreneur has always had a flair for the creative approach. The company’s latest product, the Hyperglide, a super-hydrophilic razor which allows consumers to shave without the use of oil or foam is set to revolutionise the market. Will evidently has a keen eye for avenues for growth, so it’s hardly surprising he’s considered by many as one of the UK’s most creative and passionate entrepreneurs.

ver the years, she managed to shift the focus of the business so that women can now shop for lingerie and sex toys in a safe, female-friendly environment. Jacqueline was appointed chief executive of Ann Summers in 1993 and shortly after launched the first Ann Summers store on the high street, forever changing the face of retail and cementing her reputation as the woman who brought sex to the British high street. Jacqueline has made Ann Summers the profitable success it is today through hard work, determination and belief in a novel concept. A full 30 years after her first pitch, the business is a true multi-channel retailer, with annual sales of over £150m, 143 UK & Ireland stores, 7,000 party planners (holding over 4,000 parties every week) and a thriving online presence. With no formal business training, Jacqueline ascribes her formidable success to understanding women, her own good instincts and always listening to her customer. Jacqueline has received many accolades for her achievements including Retail Week’s Most Powerful Woman in Business and Barclays Bank’s Most Inspirational Businesswoman in the UK.

S

he is listed as one of the top three female entrepreneurs in the UK and has been honoured by the Queen with an OBE for her contribution to business. The idea for Ultimo was born in 1996. Whilst attending a dinner dance, Michelle was wearing a very uncomfortable cleavageenhancing bra and had a lightbulb moment; she decided to invent a bra that was more comfortable and cleavage-enhancing than any other bra on the market. MJM has since gone from strength-to-strength, developing beyond the original umbrella of Ultimo to encompass 13 patented ‘miracle’ inventions and brands including Ultimo Bridal, Ultimo Swimwear, Ultimo Shapewear and joint venture lines including Adore Moi for Debenhams. Other recent launches include UTan and USculpt, both of which have been well-received by retailers and beauty buyers alike Over the years, Ultimo has established contracts with a string of high-profile models and celebrities including Penny Lancaster, Rachel Hunter, Kelly Brook and its current celebrity model Luisana Lopilato, the wife of global music star Michael Buble. Michelle bought husband and business partner Michael out of the business in February 2013, two years after their 2011 divorce. She has since forged a partnership with global lingerie giant MAS Holdings, one of the world’s biggest producers of intimates.

rom working as an errand boy, a bag wash boy and peeling potatoes at a local chip shop, Charlie has done it all. He launched his plumbing company Pimlico Plumbers in 1979 with just a bag of tools and an old van he bought at auction. Today, Pimlico Plumbers is London’s largest independent plumbing company with an annual turnover of £18m. The company has more than 150 vans, trucks and motorbikes cruising around the capital. Its 170-strong team of professional tradespeople and support network of close to 50 staff serve high-class clientele – including the likes of James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, and actress Dame Helen Mirren – across central and Greater London. The company’s iconic blue and white vans can also been seen in Spain after Charlie launched a Marbella branch of the company last year to serve both local and ex-pat customers. Outspoken and often controversial, Charlie has starred in Channel 4’s Secret Millionaire and the BBC’s Young Plumber of the Year programmes, whilst also appearing as a regular business commentator in the national media.

J Laura Tenison Founder and managing director JoJo Maman Bébé

The success of maternity and baby clothes retailer JoJo Maman Bébé is testament to Laura’s commitment to ethical business practices and enduring entrepreneurial spirit

oining the Royal Navy after university, Lord Jones spent several years in a law firm working his way up to senior partner. He then joined KPMG as vice chairman of corporate finance, acting as a close advisor to public companies across the United Kingdom and in KPMG’s global markets. In 2000 he joined the CBI and during his six and a half years as director-general he became known in the public arena for his candid, forthright attitude in his many media appearances. In 2005 he was knighted for his services to business and became Sir Digby Jones in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List. From 2007 to 2008 he served as the minister of state for trade & investment, accepting a lifetime peerage in the House of Lords where he now sits on the cross benches and is known as Digby, Lord Jones of Birmingham. During his term in ministerial office he made 45 overseas visits, travelling to 31 different countries and meeting with the world’s top business leaders and politicians. He changed the way that UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) was perceived by delivering a record year for inward investment and expanding the UK’s presence in all of the major international markets. Following his departure from ministerial office he was appointed as a business ambassador for UKTI until March 2013.

F

ounded in Newport, south Wales, in 1993, JoJo Maman Bébé remains headquartered in the same city today, explaining why many members of staff have remained with the company from the outset. The story of JoJo Maman Bébé is certainly tinged with a sense of ‘every cloud has a silver lining’. Laura was involved in a serious car crash in her early 20s when on the verge of moving in with her husband and setting up a menswear firm. While being treated in hospital, a fellow female patient and mother-of-two expressed her frustration at not being able to buy children’s clothes from her bed. Laura discharged herself from hospital and conducted market research from her wheelchair, discovering that what women wanted most was quality maternity wear, in addition to more choice in children’s clothing. Fast forward 20 years and JoJo Maman Bébé employs 570 people and is turning over £44m with its products sold in well over 50 countries. All the while, Laura juggles her business commitments with caring for her own kids and supporting Nema, a charity she helped found in Mozambique which supports community health projects and builds schools. Laura has won numerous awards throughout her career and regular appears in the national press and on television.

As a result of a meeting with co-founder Charles Rolls, the Fever-Tree concept was born – a high-end tonic water to partner with premium gins. Served in seven of the top ten restaurants in the world, Fever-Tree can be found in eateries, bars and hotels in over 30 countries.

Through the arts and enterprise, Zoe campaigns to raise awareness and support for the challenges facing young people. She is a talented performer, dancer, choreographer and entrepreneur, but her strength as a leader and an inspiring role model stems from her passion for engaging and empowering young people.

Technology isn’t beneficial; it’s essential

T

echnology has become such an integral part of business that no company can function without it. It’s not just the Googles or Apples of this world whose direction is influenced by digital innovation: the rhythm of every business in the UK is dictated by the developments currently taking place online and on devices. This means that no business looking to grow can afford to ignore the solutions and services available to them. Whether it’s opening an offering up to new markets, gaining access to APIs to create apps that build upon another’s platform or utilising analytics to improve efficiencies and automation in international trading, building a company without technology would be akin to trying to grow sunflowers in the dark. Tech doesn’t just support growth; it’s one of the basic elements that makes growth possible.

3aaa is the leading national provider of technology-based apprenticeships in England

aaa recruits and trains young people who join some of the most innovative technology companies in the country, as well as companies who know that exploiting technology will help their businesses grow. As specialists in the delivery of apprenticeships in IT and social media, we understand the challenges that small and medium-sized companies face in sourcing, recruiting, training and retaining young people who will have an immediate impact on their businesses and form their pipeline of future talent. Apprenticeships in IT and social media are going through a period of unprecedented growth as companies look for alternatives to the traditional recruitment routes to bring technical talent into their businesses. The opportunity to recruit young people who are passionate about technology and who bring new skills and innovation into their businesses is one that employers are embracing in ever-growing numbers. At 3aaa we set ourselves apart by offering a

free recruitment service where we source highly motivated young people who have a proven interest in technology careers and match them to the exciting roles that our employers are offering. We always work with our employers to make sure that training and assessment fits with their business needs and we deliver an apprenticeship experience for our apprentices and employers that transforms lives and businesses. We operate from 24 academies based throughout England and blend the ability to offer a consistent national service with a deep understanding of the local requirements at each of our academies. We also take our corporate social responsibility incredibly seriously and through our academies we support and contribute to a significant number of local and national charities. We’re the fastest-growing provider of apprenticeships in the country with a truly national footprint based on our three core values: customers first, excellence first and integrity first.

Growing businesses have to work harder than ever to achieve growth, attract customers, cut costs and find enough management time. At the same time, they face competition from their peers and larger rivals which puts pressure on margins and spurs the need for improved efficiencies in sales and better customer service

F

orward-thinking businesses are outfoxing their competitors using cloud computing, outsourcing their IT services to companies who deliver them over the internet. For example, five million companies already use Google Apps for business for their corporate email, online collaboration and office applications. Instead of buying packaged software, users access cloud applications through a web browser. NewVoiceMedia provides a cloud communication platform used to improve efficiency and customer experience in sales, marketing, customer support and in contact centres. Phone and other communications (social media, webchat and the like) are essential to conduct business and are particularly important in sales, marketing and customer support. A new phone system is a major investment. A traditional onpremise system is not easily scalable and there

Every silver lining has a cloud

is a risk of overspecifying and paying too much now for capabilities you may need in the future or underspecifying and outgrowing what you bought too soon. NewVoiceMedia’s ContactWorld technology provides a cloud-based alternative. It takes care of all the call routing, recording, interactive menus and technology using an internet-based system. Staff can even use it from a mobile or a home landline: they just log in via a web interface and incoming calls are routed directly to their chosen phone.

Poor cash flow is the biggest killer of businesses, hence the expression ‘cash is king’. Late payments and unpaid invoices can therefore cause irreparable damage to an enterprise of any size. One avenue to go down when it comes to alleviating such concerns is engaging the services of a debt collection agency. In this workshop, the Credit Services Association (CSA) – the only national association in the UK for companies active in the debt collection and purchase industry – gives an insight into how one’s business can become more efficient in recouping late or unpaid invoices. The CSA provides delegates with an understanding of how working with one of its members should help ensure a regular stream of cash.

Auto enrolment isn’t always the easiest thing to get your head around; fortunately ITM is here to break it down for you. Teaching business owners how to effectively plan the auto enrolment of their staff into workplace pension schemes, this workshop details the ways the process can be made as efficient as possible. Coming packed with tips on the use of middleware, reviewing your data in a timely manner, minimising manual intervention and supporting enthusiastic joiners, this session will help SMEs navigate the ins-and-outs of the new pension law and take attendees on the journey ITM took in developing and integrating its solution eAsE.

ABOUT SHOREDITCH

Picking a location for an event is rarely a forgone conclusion but there are few places in London more appropriate for a high-growth business event than Shoreditch

A

cting as the spiritual centre for Britain’s recent tech revival, Old Street’s Silicon Roundabout has brought some of the biggest brands in the world to the heart of the East End, drawing in high-profile names like Facebook, Google, Intel and Cisco. This coupled with a thriving entrepreneurial culture makes Shoreditch a great place to imbibe a bit of Britain’s startup spirit. Shoreditch wasn’t always trendy. Up until the turn of the millennium, it was a fairly working class district of the capital and was not part of inner London, as it is now. Instead, it was an extramural suburb of the City of London. Whilst the precise meaning of the name is unknown, Shoreditch does have a Saxon origin and it’s thought by some to have come from ‘Sewerditch’, a stream which ran east of St Leonard’s to near Holywell Lane. According to other legend, the district was first known as ‘Shore’s Ditch’, after Jane Shore, the mistress of Edward VI, who is thought to have died or been buried in a ditch in the area. A little known fact about Shoreditch is that it was home to London’s first two theatres. The first playhouse, known simply as ‘The Theatre’, was completed in 1576 to

accommodate the needs of James Burbage, the head of the Earl of Leicester’s company of players. Burbage had been seeking a permanent home for players to perform in as the Lord Mayor had banned plays within the walls of the City. It was demolished in 1598 to make way for the Curtain Theatre. And despite the popularity of the Globe at the time, a certain William Shakespeare lived in nearby Bishopsgate with the first of his plays being performed in Shoreditch. Dickens also frequented the streets from time-to-time, with south Shoreditch the abode for arguably his most famous character, Oliver Twist. Business has nevertheless always been at the heart of Shoreditch since the medieval times, with bricklaying, tanning and tailoring being the order of the day back then. Slowly but surely wealth started to weave its way from the city into the district, brought about mainly by an ever-growing population. Rich foreigners and company chiefs started setting up shop on the fertile ground between Old Street and Shoreditch High Street, although most businesses at that point were supplying the city with essential services such as saddling and iron-mongering. By the late 19th century, clothing, printing and furniture were the

main trades in Shoreditch, with cheap labour allowing business owners to counter the worse effects of the industrial revolution. Pubs started to spring up too – certainly a sign of things to come. From Shoreditch’s working class roots has grown a community that is now the domain of the young and hip. Whether you’re after quirky craft beer, sizzling street food, modern art or a designer beanie, Shoreditch is now laced with a creative streak that has made it a must-visit for those after something a little bit new and exciting. And this creativity – along with a healthy dose of innovation – is what is driving the booming tech scene today. The looming skyscrapers of the City are quite a fitting backdrop for this melting pot of entrepreneurialism. Many ambitious graduates are passing up a corporate career for a taste of the start-up action that is happening on the doorstep of the financial behemoths. Nowhere is the ambition of London to become a major player on the global stage felt more than on Silicon Roundabout. That’s why it’s the perfect location for a business event that has ambition written all over it.
