The International Social Media Design Firm, Reach, hired me to design their new office space. They are located in Schaumburg, IL and wanted to create a space to promote creativity for their company’s success. The Logo inspiration of hands reaching up gave a visual element to the company name, Reach. I came up with a high-energy space with a comfortable, relaxed feeling. I felt this would provide users the necessary elements to enjoy their workday. The finish choices provided durability while giving the space a calm, and creative atmosphere. The material colors on the furniture and walls gave energy to the space. The flooring choice was a neutral palette to compliment the space. A vintage industrial style gave another element of energy in the space. It was important to keep in mind the adjacencies of the various work areas. Providing an ease of travel in the public and private areas was the goal. The 8000 square feet of space was enough room to accomplish this goal.

The use of energy efficient lighting provides ample amounts of light in the space. Utilizing energy star appliances in the employee break room and the use of low VOC paints were elements promoting efficient energy costs. All these solutions provided this growing company an environment to prosper.

Schaumburg Pediatric Health Facility was designed utilizing the theme of Outer Space. This facility is being used primarily for healthcare services so it is necessary for the design to provide space for private areas as well as public areas. The client wants their building to provide sustainable green design in order to achieve LEED certification. The colors used in the public space of this facility are cool colors giving the feel of the night skies. In the exam room’s I have installed wall-sized murals of the galactic hemispheres to emphasize the theme. It is important to use quality sustainable finishes in order to provide a pleasing atmosphere for all ages visiting and working at this facility. In the waiting room a capsule space ship for the children coming to the facility was designed. The children are able to climb into the capsule and dress in costumes of outer space clothing, and play with several toys that are astronomy educational.

When I started this class I wasn’t sure what to expect so the journey through the class was enlightening. The Millennium project made me aware of the efforts to combat world hunger. I became more aware of the efforts in my everyday life to accomplish this goal. I also enjoyed the movie “Fountain Head” about the responsibility the designing industry has to society. The message about taking responsibility for what your name is on was made clear. It helped me to realize
my responsibility as a designer. My research project idea came to me after hearing a radio commercial for Organ donating and it was a personal friend by the name of “Vicki Tulcus” who was talking. After hearing this I decided to put my energy toward a project that would matter in this world and came up with a Children’s Hospice. As I continued to research I found that there are over 40 Children Hospice facilities in the UK and that the Princess “Kate Middleton” is the spokes person for these facilities. I also found that there are only 3 facilities like this in the U.S. So I felt the need for more facilities like this in our country as well. I then found out that there are plans to open the fourth one in the US in Minnesota it is called the “Lighthouse Children’s Hospice” and they are in the planning stages at this point. After sending an email to them I was able to connect with the Executive Director of the project and she was so helpful with information and made me feel so
good about my decision to do this type of a project. As I continued on to do site visits I was able to come up with so much information on what needs to be considered for a medical facility of this kind. The 2 interviews that I was able to obtain were extremely helpful with understanding how a project like this will
materialize. Reaching out to professionals in the industry gave a purpose to my craft as well as all of my studies. Overall I am pleased with all of the information that was gathered for this project and I felt good about what I was able to come up with to make this project more of a reality. I looked forward to Thesis II to continue with this project.

This Ranch Style house fuses modernist ideas with American Western working ranches creating a very informal and casual living style. This style of home was popular to the middle class during the 1940’s - 1970’s. The open floor plan allows residence plenty of space in the private areas of the home while allowing a grand entertaining space to the central part of the floor plan. The family’s bedrooms are located on the second floor for privacy while the Mother in Law suite is located on the main level for mobility circumstances. The overall scale of the space and furnishings are grand without being over powering. I wanted to bring in the beauty of the outdoors to the space by the use of nature materials. I accomplished this by using fine woods for the furnishings and natural weathered woods for the interior trims and floors. This gave a rustic naturally comfortable feel to the space. By incorporating low VOC products for the paints and natural fabrics for the furnishings and window treatments we incorporated some sustainable elements. These elements will allow us to continue to work toward a health environment and preserve the outdoors of our great landscapes. Hand Rendered with Marker

After researching Selimiye Mosque in Turkey I was inspired to create a dining room interior. The interior and the exterior courtyard area give a visual grandeur of this historic Mosque. The visible and invisible symmetries portrayed God’s perfection through the plain and powerful structure of the dome and the bare stone. Some of the design elements used in the space are, Palladian windows to bring in lots of light. Tall ceilings show the grandeur of the space and a curved threshold into the next room has a similar brick pattern as found in the Selimiye Mosque. A staircase was added mimicking the tall staircase used for the platform speaker in the Mosque. A large chandelier was placed over the table and a red Turkish area rug was placed under the table. The furniture is minimal so not to take away from the architectural features. Created in Google Sketchup Enhanced in Adobe Photoshop

TURKISH INSPIRED DINING ROOM HISTORY OF DESIGN III
In order to maximize the space I incorporated a mezzanine level to this loft space. This gave our client’s (Paul and Amanda) the ability to use the space to its fullest potential. I divided the space into two areas a private and a public area. There are two entryways into the space; the one entry will be used for the main entry into the loft. The second entry way will be used for the business that Amanda runs out of their residents, a dance studio that has many clients utilizing the space. The first level of the loft will have 2 spaces that will utilize the full height of the space. They are the dance studio and the dining entertainment living space. The other area of this level will have a lower height of 8’ 6”. These areas will be the master bedroom, bathroom and closet area and also the kitchen in the private area. In the public area there will be the locker area with a lower ceiling height. I have two separate staircases leading up to the second level. One is located between the kitchen and the dining area and the second is located in the dance studio area, one for public and one for private. The upper level of the space will have the home office and guest room-study on the private side of the loft. The public side of the upper level will utilize the bathroom as well as an upper viewing area for the dance floor. The overall square footage of the loft is 2,416. I feel the floor plan will give the couple a well designed living space as well as work space for all of their living and entertaining needs.

I chose the artist Georgia O’Keeffe for my inspirational artist for this project. She was a revolutionary female painter from the 20th century; her work is categorized as American Modernism. She is best known for her southwest scenic paintings and her magnified floral paintings. I felt that this artist had a lot of feeling and movement in her work. These characteristics I felt would help create a wonderful nightclub atmosphere. The brightness of the colors and the magnification of the floral paintings give almost a Kaleidoscope feel to any space. The large murals of art are displayed with ambient lighting to create drama in the space.
