Architecture - Composition Materiality I started my specialised education by doing a inspiring apprentorship in interior design at the Applied Arts School in Geneva. This experience allowed me to widen my spectrum of the different artistic and creative spheres. I was immediately seduced by the pluridisciplinary educational approach that this school offers, and it comforted me in my choice of working on projects of a bigger scale : the city. I reoriented my cursus towards architecture at the Higher School of Landscaping, Engineering and Architecture of Geneva (HEPIA) keeping the sensitivity to space and to material that was taught to me before. Over the course of 3 years, I was given the opportunity to gain diverse knowledge and sharpen my eye on the profession of architecture, which allies technicity, literature and creativity. It’s during those years that I developed a new interest for reading, especially theoretical literature and essays of practicing architects. I greatly admire the writings of Peter Zumthor (Thinking Architecture ; Atmospheres) which accurately show the importance of sensoriality in the way we apprehend space. As well as the theoretical texts of Jacques Lucan or Martin Steinemann which address the question of form and the role of composition in the history of architecture. Later on, the writings related to urbanism such as « The Architecture of the City » by Aldo Rossi and several essays of Paola Vigano caught my attention by their scientific and social approach of urban matter. It is this both theoretical and creative combination that I’m most fascinated about in the profession of architecture, and it is this very combination that I wish to develop over the next years.

Contiguous villas : families, seniors, artists Rue des Moraines, Carouge (GE), CH BArch 2nd year Sandrik Vizarraga Pavloff Timothée Giorgis

The city of Carouge stands out by the alliance of its historic fabric from the 18th century and 20th century residential highrise apartement building. The aim here is to offer an arrangement of contiguous housing, in a plot that acts as a link between the historic city and the new district under construction. The housing is divided into three categories with two varying typologies, offering different spaces within the same volumes. The villas are set around three courtyards that allow access to the apartements and the ateliers. Pathways offer a great permeability to the entire housing complex and encourage people to stroll around the outdoor spaces.

Interior spaces are built in split-levels and offer diagonal views and interaction between the different living areas. The latter benefit from higher ceilings and are linked to patios and mezzanines giving access to flat roofs.

Collective housing project Chandieu, Geneva (GE), CH BArch 2nd year Sandrik Vizarraga Pavloff + Agathe Studer Timothée Giorgis & Raphaël Niogret

The plot for the project is located on the Chandieu site, which offers a luxuriant vegetation and an urban fabric consisting of linear residential buildings. The buildings, divided into five unequal complexes, are set in a staggered arrangement in order to create 3 small squares destined to be used as meeting points for the residents. The interstitial spaces lead to semi-public paths which give access to the entrances and to the commercial facilities on the ground floor. A Greenway distances the primary school of Chandieu from the buildings which are located on the adjacent plot.

The apartment typology is based on rooms built in a row which generate faraway views through the spaces. The apartments located at the front and rear corners of each building are set around one central area, the kitchen. This centralized lay out offers multiple passages and a high permeability between the living and sleeping areas.

Haute Ecole de Musique (HEM) Place des Nations, Genève (GE), CH BArch 3rd year, Bachelor Project Sandrik Vizarraga Pavloff Pr. Dr. Paola Tosolini + Pr. Lionel Rinquet

The new building for the « Haute Ecole de Musique » is set in the Nations neighbourhood, facing the central public square maxing the axial entrance to the United Nations Building. The parcel is located at the border between the dense city and the beginning of Geneva countryside. The urban fabric surrounding the site, essentially consisting of autonomous buildings, favours the implementation of a unitary form composed of two interlocking volumes. The main building, set back from the street front, has a square in front of it to mark the main entrance. The second building, lower, aligns with Avenue Giuseppe Motta and generates semi-public green spaces for HEM users.

The two interlocking volumes are articulated around a central atrium receiving vertical circulation and therefore providing natural light. The different parts of the programme are arranged around the floor levels, left free and serving as a circulation and a communal area for users.

01. Facade of the building from the park

The architectural diversity close to the site has favoured a sober and silent facade composition. This desire for banality is reflected in a high degree of standardisation of the building elements, and has been a strong theme throughout the construction process.

Personal projects Most of the works presented in this last part are group projects or pluridisciplinary workshops, carried out over the course of my 3 bachelor years at HEPIA. For all of those works, we started the projects by doing a preliminary analysis, supported by theoretical writings. The research was then displayed in various papers revolving around the subject of representation, which I am particularly passionate about. Each of these projects aims to emphasize the poetry of urban fabric, of a structure, or of the fantasy of what is hidden behind built walls. In the same spirit, the scenography project for the Distinction Romande d’Architecture (DRA) attempts to reveal a Swiss linguistic region (french) and demonstrates, through multiple media, its richness in contemporary architectural design. The mission was to conceive an exhibition of selected project built within the four last years. We have collaborated with architects, graphic designers, landscape and interior architects.
