Hello friends, Roadside produce stands slowly take their posts, thunderstorms make themselves welcome, and the air is heavy with the taste of salt. Winter is gone— Summer is coming.

Downtown Beaufort......................................................10 Recipes...........................................................................11 Shopping & Services Directory......................................12 Dining & Market Directory............................................13 Map of the Sea Islands.............................................14–15

There are so many reasons to love spring and summer: tomatoes, watermelon, kale, and strawberries are in season; students are free from school; picking up shells on the beach; and let’s not forget those beautiful low country sunsets. As we begin this transition into summertime bliss, let us think about what “summer” means to us. To me, summertime is defined by patriotism and showing our military the appreciation they deserve, especially since we are approaching Memorial Day, a day dedicated to remembering those who sacrificed themselves for our liberty and country. The amazing men and women in our military are the reason we can enjoy our summertime bliss: they fight for our security and liberty, for their families, friends and strangers. It is amazing to look outside and see so much beauty and freedom in this country—so embrace it. We are truly blessed every day of our lives. With this in mind, next time you roll up to a roadside produce truck or go strawberry picking on your way back from the beach, give thanks to those who have sacrificed so much for our peace and justice.

Downtown Beaufort

Relive History, Where History Lives In Beaufort, SC

By Carol Lauvray, Beaufort History Museum President

To relive the area’s rich history, start with a visit to Beaufort History Museum at the historic Arsenal (1798) in downtown Beaufort! One of our knowledgeable docents will guide you through 450 years of Beaufort’s past, recounting stories about this place that shaped America.

Beaufort History Museum, 713 Craven St | BeaufortHistoryMuseum.com

Before St. Augustine, Jamestown and Plymouth, nearby Parris Island was the site of Santa Elena founded by the Spanish—the first major settlement and colonial capital in what is now the United States. The Revolutionary War battle of Grays Hill was fought just outside town, and Beaufort District plantation owner Thomas Heyward, Jr. signed the Declaration of Independence. The seeds of the Civil War were planted in Beaufort, when prominent residents secretly met to plan secession from the Union in a Craven Street home, now famously known as “Secession House.” In November 1861 during the early days of the Civil War, Beaufort’s white residents hastily abandoned their homes and fled town as the Union forces sailed into Port Royal Sound. For the rest of the war Union troops made Beaufort their headquarters, transforming many of the antebellum mansions into hospitals for the wounded. With the Civil War still raging, Reconstruction began in Beaufort where 10,000 slaves were liberated during the early months of the war. Northern missionaries educated the newly freed men, women and children at schools like Penn School as part of the Port Royal Experiment. You’ll hear these stories and learn much more about how Beaufort changed the course of America’s history, when you step back in time at Beaufort History Museum!
