Dear
Welcome to the Arts DTS of 2016! We are very excited that you are part of this school and we’re looking forward to embark on this adventure together, sharing our lives with one another. Our prayer is that we will all get to know God in a deeper and greater way, that we will experience His love for us and come to understand more of His love for the world, seeing people through His eyes. Something we firmly believe is that God called you to this school and that He will work in and through you. Arts DTS offers a great opportunity, to come together with people from different backgrounds, cultures and age groups; to learn from each other, while learning together to walk in obedience and the fear of the Lord.
Arts DTS Manual 2016 PAGE 02
Be ready to encounter Jesus in many different settings; in class, during work duties, in the city or in the relationships you’ll build here. This is a time to be real with each other, sharing our hopes and dreams but also our fears and challenges. A time to be filled with wonder, discovering what it means to be made in the likeness of the Creator God, through exploring and creating together with Him. We hope that you will feel at home and that you will be able to receive all that the Lord has in store for you. In the end, it is not so much about what we provide or facilitate in this school, but about you taking responsibility to get the maximum out of your time here. As a staff team, we are here to pray for you, listen to you, support you in whatever way we can and of course to hang out and have lots of fun! May the Lord challenge and delight your heart during this season.
On behalf of the Arts DTS staff team,

YOUTH WITH A MISSION YWAM Amsterdam is a part of Youth With A Mission (YWAM) globally, an international, cross-cultural, non-denomiArts DTS Manual 2016 PAGE 04
national missions movement with as goal to ‘Know God and to make Him known.’ YWAM focuses its efforts on three main aspects; evangelism, mercy ministry and training. Since its inception in 1960, over 5 million missionaries have served alongside of YWAM in every country in the world. Currently YWAM globally has over a 1000 locations in 187 countries.

full.”
Jesus’ great commision to reach all the world with the gospel has always been the driving force behind our efforts. This has taken us to the unengaged people groups in the Amazon, motivated us to create evangelical media productions and pushes us to find new creative ways to share God’s love.
Affirming the Christian Magna Carta, we believe everyone has the right to the basic necessities of life and from this YWAM has been involved in major disaster relief efforts, community development around the world and has used modern communications methods to raise awareness for various issues our world faces today.
Training Matt 28:19, NIV
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” In order to multiply our efforts, YWAM’s University of the Nations offers courses that aim to equip missionaries for their work in all aspects of society. Besides the entry level Discipleship Training School (DTS), UofN has training in the area of arts, sports, christian ministry, communication, counseling and health care, education, humanities, international studies and science and technology.

Arts DTS Manual 2016
Evangelism
Youth With A Mission (YWAM) affirms the Bible as the authoritative Word of God and, with the Holy Spirit’s inspiration, the absolute reference point for every aspect of life and ministry.
Arts DTS Manual 2016 PAGE 06
Based upon God’s Word, who He is, and His initiative of salvation, the following responses are strongly emphasized in YWAM:
Worship
Fellowship
We are called to praise and worship God alone.
We are called to commit to the Church in both its local nurturing expression and its mobile multiplying expression.
Holiness We are called to lead holy and righteous lives that exemplify the nature and character of God.
Witness We are called to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with those who do not know Him.
Prayer We are called to engage in intercessory prayer for the people and causes on God’s heart, including standing against evil in every form.
The eighteen Foundational Values of Youth With A Mission are the expression of our basic beliefs coupled with specific directives given by God since YWAM’s beginning in 1960. They are recorded here in order to pass on to successive generations that which God has emphasized to us. These shared beliefs and values are the guiding principles for both the past and future growth of our mission. Some are common to all Christians everywhere; others are distinctive to Youth With A Mission. The combination of these beliefs and values make up the unique family characteristics of YWAM—our “DNA.” They are values we hold in high regard which determine who we are, how we live and how we make decisions.
Arts DTS Manual 2016 PAGE 07
FOUNDATIONAL VALUES 1. Know God
gatherings. This is an integral part of our process for decision making.
YWAM is committed to know God, His nature, His character and His ways. We seek to reflect who He is in every aspect of our lives and ministry. The automatic overflow of knowing and enjoying fellowship with God is a desire to share Him with others.
4. Practice worship and intercessory prayer
2. Make God known YWAM is called to make God known throughout the whole world, and into every arena of society through evangelism, training and mercy ministries. We believe that salvation of souls should result in transformation of societies, thus obeying Jesus’ command to make disciples of all nations.
3. Hear God’s voice YWAM is committed to creating with God through listening to Him, praying His prayers and obeying His commands in matters great and small. We are dependent upon hearing His voice as individuals, together in team contexts and in larger corporate
YWAM is dedicated to worship Jesus and engage in intercessory prayer as integral aspects of daily life. We also recognize the intent of Satan to destroy the work of God and we call upon God’s power and the Holy Spirit to overcome his strategies in the lives of individuals and in the affairs of nations.
5. Be visionary YWAM is called to be visionary, continually receiving, nurturing and releasing fresh vision from God. We support the pioneering of new ministries and methods, always willing to be radical in order to be relevant to every generation, people group, and sphere of society. We believe that the apostolic call of YWAM requires the integration of spiritual eldership, freedom in the Spirit and relationship, centered on the Word of God.
6. Champion young people YWAM is called to champion youth. We believe God has gifted and called young people to spearhead vision and ministry. We are committed to value them, trust them, train them, support them, make space for them and release them. They are not only the Church of the future; they are the Church of today. We commit to follow where they lead, in the will of God.
7. Be broad-structured and decentralized YWAM is broad-structured and diverse, yet integrated. We are a global family of ministries held together by shared purpose, vision, values and relationship. We believe that structures should serve the people and the purposes of God. Every ministry at every level has the privilege and responsibility of accountability to a circle of elders, with overall international accountability to the YWAM Global Leadership Forum.
8. Be international and interdenominational
Arts DTS Manual 2016 PAGE 08
YWAM is international and interdenominational in its global scope as well as its local constituency. We believe that ethnic, linguistic and denominational diversity, along with redeemed aspects of culture, are positive factors that contribute to the health and growth of the mission.
9. Have a biblical worldview YWAM is called to a biblical worldview. We believe that the Bible makes a clear division between good and evil; right and wrong. The practical dimensions of life are no less spiritual than the ministry expressions. Everything done in obedience to God is spiritual. We seek to honor God with all that we do, equipping and mobilizing men and women of God to take roles of service and influence in every arena of society.
10. Function in teams YWAM is called to function in teams in all aspects of ministry and leadership. We believe that a combination of complementary gifts, callings, perspectives, ministries and generations working together in unity at all levels of our mission provides wisdom and safety. Seeking God’s will and making decisions in a team context allows accountability and contributes to greater relationship, motivation, responsibility and ownership of the vision.
11. Exhibit servant leadership YWAM is called to servant leadership as a lifestyle, rather than a leadership hierarchy. A servant leader is one who honors the gifts and callings of those under his/ her care and guards their rights and privileges. Just as Jesus served His disciples, we stress the importance of those with leadership responsibilities serving those whom they lead.
12. Do first, then teach YWAM is committed to doing first, then teaching. We believe that firsthand experience gives authority to our words. Godly character and a call from God are more important than an individual’s gifts, abilities and expertise.
13. Be relationship oriented YWAM is dedicated to being relationship-oriented in our living and working together. We desire to be united through lives of holiness, mutual support, transparency, humility, and open communication, rather than a dependence on structures or rules.
14. Value the individual
15. Value families YWAM affirms the importance of families serving God together in missions, not just the father and/or mother. We encourage the development of strong and healthy family units, with each member sharing the call to missions and contributing their gifts in unique and complementary ways.
YWAM is called to practice a life of dependence upon God for financial provision. For individuals and YWAM corporately, this comes primarily through His people. As God and others have been generous towards us, so we desire to be generous. YWAMers give themselves, their time and talents to God through the mission with no expectations of remuneration.
17. Practice hospitality YWAM affirms the ministry of hospitality as an expression of God’s character and the value of people. We believe it is important to open our hearts, homes and campuses to serve and honor one another, our guests and the poor and needy, not as acts of social protocol, but as expressions of generosity.
18. Communicate with integrity YWAM affirms that everything exists because God communicates. Therefore, YWAM is committed to truthful, accurate, timely and relevant communication. We believe good communication is essential for strong relationships, healthy families and communities, and effective ministry.
PAGE 09
16. Practice dependence on God for finances
Arts DTS Manual 2016
YWAM is called to value each individual. We believe in equal opportunity and justice for all. Created in the image of God, people of all nationalities, ages and functions have distinctive contributions and callings. We are committed to honoring God-given leadership and ministry gifts in both men and women.

YWAM Amsterdam’s ministry happens right outside of the front door due to the base’s unique locations in the heart of Amsterdam.
With over 40 years of innovation in ministry, YWAM Amsterdam continues to be a birthplace for new initiatives to reach the world with the love of Jesus.
Community-driven YWAM Amsterdam consists of a group of people walking together, passionately following Jesus as a multicultural and diverse family.
Samaritans Inn Samaritans Inn might be one of YWAM Amsterdam’s most visible facilities due to its high-traffic location at Amsterdam Central Station and its lightened signs reading ‘God Roept U’, (God Calls You in English) and ‘Jesus Loves You’. The building hosts art café Dwaze Zaken, the christian Pilgrim Bookstore, a dance studio and is used as YWAM Amsterdam staff housing.

THE PURPOSE OF THE DTS The DTS is designed to encourage students in personal character development, cultivating their relationship with God and identifying their unique gifts and callings. Cross-cultural exposure and global awareness are special emphases throughout the course, preparing the students to evangelize and disciple current and future generations, answering the call to “Go into all the world and teach (make disciples of) all nations.” (Matthew 28:19).
The purpose: To GATHER and CHALLENGE people to worship, listen to and obey God, releasing them (in the context of the DTS) to serve through evangelism, intercession, acts of compassion and other expressions of God’s heart for the world, possibly even pioneering new ministries. To INSPIRE and CULTIVATE growth in one’s relationship with God resulting in Christ-like character, which is based on a solid Biblical foundation, the work of the Holy Spirit and the personal application of Biblical truth, especially concerning God’s Character, the Cross and empowering Grace. To SHARPEN one’s ability to relate to, learn from and work with people, including those of different cultures, personalities and perspectives. To further EQUIP each one to serve God’s purposes either in or outside of YWAM Family of Ministries, strengthening a commitment to reach the lost, especially the unreached, to care for the poor, and to influence all areas of society. To IMPART the vision and foundational values of Youth With A Mission International as well as that of the host operating location and to provide information regarding a variety of opportunities for service.
The curriculum is divided into the following six categories: God’s nature and character; God’s intention for individuals, peoples and nations; seeing all of life from God’s perspective; redemption, sin, and the Cross; God’s family — the Church; God’s world - His call and commission; the ministries of YWAM.
In this second phase of the DiscipleshipTraining School (DTS), specially organized teams are sent out for 8-12 weeks of evangelism in cross-cultural situations. The emphasis is on the application of principles taught in the DTS lecture phase coupled with teaching on evangelism concepts and practices, equipping students to share their faith in a variety of ways and contexts.
The DTS aims to graduate students... • who are becoming more like Jesus in the way they relate to God and people who increasingly cooperate with the empowering presence of the endwelling Holy Spirit • who listen to and obey God as the result of God’s enabling Grace • who search the Scripture in such a way that transforms beliefs, values and behaviors • with strengthened lifestyles of worship, intercession and spiritual warfare • with a greater ability to work with others, especially those different to themselves • who can share the Gospel with the lost and have a life long commitment to do so with a commitment to continue to be involved in some way with God’s work among the nations, including unreached people, the poor and needy and in spheres of society • who understand the calling and values of YWAM and are aware of a variety of opportunities available to them throughout YWAM • with a clearer understanding of God’s purposes for their life and a sense of their life direction • who either: go on to serve God in either a context familiar or foreign to them or pursue further training (in or outside of YWAM) to equip them for further service.

If I didn’t just drift of and daydream, I’m probably singing, dancing (it’s more moving around in weird ways) or I’m petting the dog. Other things I love are glitter, underwater scenes in documentaries, hugging friends and chocolate. And Jesus of course. JOURNALS Purpose of the Journal Habakuk 2:2 (the Message)
And the Lord answered me and said: “Write the vision and engrave it so plainly upon tablets that every one who pass may be able to read it easily quickly

as he hastens by.” Your journal will be a record of your time in the DTS, a reminder of God’s faithfulness to you personally and to us corporately as a school. It is not intended to be a note-taking device. The intention is that you will be able to record in your journal what God is teaching you, any direction He is giving you and how He is discipling you in your walk with Him. It will serve as a memory for you when you return home and can be something to share with your pastor and close friends to show what you have learned. We all grow and learn the most when we have the chance to reflect on our life experiences. It is in this process that we can discover the connection between our experience and the truth of God’s Word. If we do not take the time to reflect on what we are learning, we may miss the maximum benefit from the experience we are going through. The DTS journal will provide you with opportunities of such reflection each week. An important aspect of the journal is creativity. Many people feel that they are not creative and find that trying to answer a question in a creative manner is difficult for them. The challenge is, however, quite purposeful. To stretch in this area requires you to interact with what you are learning in a way that fosters reflection and understanding. This will have an effect in the application of the truth you are learning. For this reason, we encourage you to be as creative as possible when answering the journal questions.
Journal Questions First weekend
Teaching weeks
• What resonated with you this week? What did you learn? • What revelation did you receive about God? • What does this mean for you/your life?
• What is God asking you to change? • What are you discovering about yourself, and God by being creative during the workshops and creative times? Personal Page (creative) • Use this page to express yourself creatively how ever that may be. This is a space for you to share highlights, experiences, your process, or words you have received, etc. For example: Write a spoken word, paint a picture, make a collage, or even share a link to a project you have made online or through other media channels. Try to explore new creative outlets and mix it up a bit. Please put your journal on Karine’s desk every Monday morning. You’ll get it back a few days later from your one-on-one. We will hand out an evaluation form every week for you to fill out as well. You can just put it in your journal.

EVALUATIONS Every week you will be asked to fill out a “How are we doing?” assessment with eight categories. The purposes of the questionnaire are: 1. To assure that we give you the best we can. 2. To identify any major problems that need to be addressed. 3. To give you an opportunity to share your opinion. 4. To increase the quality of our school, by learning from you.
Speaker Throughout the lecture phase we will have a wide variety of speakers with different personalities and different denominational backgrounds. Some speakers may seem to contradict one another. Others you will find will purposely say and do things to provoke a response. We are not asking you to necessarily agree with everything the teacher is sharing but they all most certainly have something worth learning from. Do not grade them on whether or not you got along with them (God may be using them to stir you up or take you out of your comfort zone/ box), but rather grade them on their Biblical backing of the topic, the effectiveness of their message, and whether it was transformational. On the “comments” please let us know if you would recommend this speaker again. Please give reasons why you would or would not recommend them.
Staff The staff have different responsibilities, for example: providing a good environment, to be approachable, and loving. Love does not necessarily mean you will like everything. Sometimes love means to challenge, which may make you feel uncomfortable. Please grade the staff as a whole and if necessary individually. If you feel that one or several staff are doing something wrong, be encouraged to talk to them in person about it as well. If there are certain staff members that you find it difficult to develop a relationship with, please explain why, e.g.: they are not friendly, you do not see them around, etc.
Students A big part of discipleship during this time is not just learning during lectures, but learning from the whole environment God has put you in. One of the elements God will use to test and train you are your fellow students (1 John 2:9-11, 3:14, 4:19-20). Are you getting along with the students? Do you feel that cliques are developing? Do you feel isolated or separated? Do you think that the students are paying attention, learning, and applying the teaching? Are they distracting you? These are some of the questions you might consider.
Community Life
One-on-One
While you are here, this is your home. During this time we live, work, eat and relax together. It is our hope and intention that you will connect with other people in our YWAM community, and that they in return will develop a relationship with you. Questions to process are: Is the community warm and friendly? Are they helpful? Do they spend time with you? Are they polite and courteous? Do they as staff seem to apply the teaching that you are receiving in the DTS? How do you feel about the environment. Do you feel comfortable? Are the different areas clean and tidy. Are the restrooms sanitary? Is there anything that would make your stay here more comfortable, if it is within our means, we would like to provide it for you. Please let us know.
This should be a time that is precious to you, It is not just a time to be heard, but also to receive direction and to help you to apply things that you are receiving to your specific needs. Do you feel honored? Do you feel you are being heard and listened to? Do you feel the advice and direction is helpful? What would make these times more effective or better for you?
Small Group This should be a time for you to ask questions and inspire discussions on what God is doing in your life, what He is revealing about Himself, and things that you are learning during the DTS. It is not the job of the staff to preach during this time, rather they should provoke and inspire you in conversation. The conversation should be equal and balanced between all the participants. Do you feel the time is effective for you? If not, why is that? Is the staff doing a good job managing the time?

It’s hard to create a menu that everybody will like since we all have different tastes and backgrounds. Sometimes you may have to eat food that may not be your favorite. This is both good training for outreach and life. We would like to identify the food that seems to be the favorite of the majority and the food that is disliked by the majority, so we can make changes in the menu if necessary. Please grade the food overall, you can comment on specific meals you really liked or did not like at all.
The workshops are meant to let you experience different expressions of art, get challenged in your creativity and have a lot of fun. Do you like the variety of workshops? Are they helpful? Is the time spend effectively. Are there things that you’re missing? Do you feel that you are growing creatively?
